Popping by seeking your thoughts about Chapter 176: Kagome’s Heart, this specifically:

As we know, it’s a major turning point in the story. Kagome asks to stay by Inuyasha’s side, rather than leave him, the feudal era, and the jewel shard mission behind.

Now this is pure speculation, but I like to speculate. What if Kagome had left? Certainly, that’s an entirely different story, but I’m curious what you think may have happened in this scenario.

Some particular questions I have are:

Would Inuyasha have teamed up with Kikyo to try to collect shards and defeat Naraku?

Kagome was the glue that brought the Inugang together. In her absence at /this/ point of the story (the 3 year separation is different), would they have parted? As in, would Miroku, Sango, and Shippo parted ways with Inuyasha if he teamed up with Kikyo (I don’t see her being a fan of traveling with the inugang)? If so, do they fight Naraku in their smaller group, do they survive, etc.

Would Naraku/ the jewel still have been defeated?

Even *if* InuKik defeated Naraku/ the jewel (I don’t think they would have), how does the story end? Kikyo isn’t alive so she.. dies? Achieves nirvana and Inuyasha just.. grieves the rest of his life or joins her in death? I don’t see a happy ending ☹️

Oh man, this is a sad one, let me strap in with a depressing yearning/pining playlist. First off, I think this arc shows a LOT of things about both Inuyasha and Kagome's character, good and bad. Mostly good, but perhaps in bad context. Or at least very sad context. I mean we got Inuyasha going from this:

... to this:

(I know this isn't the same arc but bear with me, the character development is there and he has a similar change of heart here, for her emotional wellbeing, not just physical.) The important thing to note is Kikyou wanted to die at this point, and still to take Inuyasha with her.

And Inuyasha's response was this:

So even if it's born out of extreme guilt and trauma, I find it unlikely they would have fought Naraku at all. Kikyou talks a big game, but first chance she gets she is always trying to call Inuyasha to her side strictly to die, never for his help. (At this point.) Inuyasha more than likely would have been coerced to Hell even against his better judgement. Shippou was willing to leave the group once already without Kagome (after the Sess fight, he only came back cuz of the wolves chasing him) and Miroku is used to being a loner vagabond. Who knows what would happen to Shippou but Miroku and Sango would have likely drifted apart, encountered Naraku, and perished, even if they were together tbh. (Let's face it, Sango's pretty helpless against the Kohaku card.) Even Kagome would have been miserable having her tie to Inuyasha go unfulfilled and always regretting not knowing if everyone was still alive and safe or if she left them to their doom. So with that being said, as much as I love this scene as a pure example of her devotion to Inuyasha, there realistically WAS some pressure on her decision. I think she fully knew Kikyou intended to kill Inuyasha and that he couldn't say no because of his vulnerabilities and perceived superior love for her. (That hurts me to say but it's Kagome's POV.) That's why she had the lines about wanting him to feel like he's allowed to be happy and she wants that for him. She feels that normally, yes, but even moreso in the wake of knowing he'll likely forfeit his life. (I think the anime even emphasized this by adding her saying "You have to know that I want you to live." SOMEONE had to show him they care enough or he'd be too far gone.) The beautiful part is that Kagome DID full-on save Inuyasha's life by making her choice. Because she's unsure if she'll be able to help him enough to keep him around forever, but he's shown an uncanny desire to LIVE for her. Which obviously he continues to show again and again, and is my favorite part of their relationship. An outcast so abused and conditioned to it that the first person to care about him tells him to die and he absolutely will. But that outcast learns he wants to live way more, through interacting with unconditional love. I've said it before but Kikyou to me was always a metaphor for Inuyasha's grief and succumbing to the pain, whereas Kagome was always symbolic for a desire to live and be happy again.

Edit: I have left my hater era… while I do not like these ships myself I won’t shame you for liking the legal ones. I am no longer present in ship discourse. I do not like these but I won’t stop others from enjoying them…. With that said please enjoy the LONG ass read.

1, I do not hate any ships for being WLW, MLM or NL (hetero) unless it’s the result of representation erasure (An example of this is in the Owl House Community. People ship Lunter and say that it’s ok because Luz is a canon Bisexual but it’s still WLW relationship erasure!!! I do not support Lunter btw…)

2, I’m gonna mention stuff like proshipping and toxic relationships so please be warned if you’re triggered by those types of things do not read under the cut

3, I’m also gonna talk about ships I lovehate due to having extremely mixed opinions.

Killunary (Killua x Canary)

There are a couple reasons why I don’t like this ship but it’s mostly because of the power imbalance. Certain employee x employer ships just don’t work due to extreme power imbalance. The main example of this is the Zoldyck family and their abusive nature towards all the butlers, including how Kikyo treats Canary when she got close to Killua.

The other reason is because I see Killua as a heavily MLM coded character. And I’m sorry if you don’t agree but based on both his canon and non-canon interactions with the various women of the story, I don’t think he’s straight. I personally think he might be gay/vincian but it’s up to interpretation!! I cannot see Killua dating a girl. (This includes ships like KilluRetz and Killumane)

Hisomachi (Hisoka x Machi)

Again, Hisoka is a heavily MLM coded character with Machi being the only woman in the series he’s shown possibly romantic interest in. Hisoka himself is an extremely harmful stereotype of a gay man being overly flamboyant but also predatory towards kids and women. That is a stereotype that is shown and pushed VERY often with Hisoka. (If you do view Machi as WLW, which I do, she’s also a harmful stereotype of the mean, man hating, lesbian./lh)

Also the fact that Machi straight up rejected his dinner offer in the Heaven’s Arena Arc should be enough to push the fact that she doesn’t like him…

Edit: while Hisoka is MLM coded I personally see him as a pan man due to some random factors and just cuz I like it that way

Kuroneon (Chrollo/Kuroro x Neon)

Ok I only have like one reason but I feel like it’s validated tbh!!! He literally attacked her and stole her ability. And I don’t wanna go on a whole rant about Neon and her complexities rn but her nen ability, lovely ghostwriter, was essentially the only reason for her father to love her and care the way he did…

Also their age difference urks me ALOT cuz Neon is about the same age as Kurapika (17-19) and Chrollo is pushin 30… T-T

Kurokura (Chrollo/Kuroro x Kurapika)

A lot of people ship them because “lol omg enemies to lovers!!” But like. This isn’t that kind of enemies to lovers hun… :// Chrollo and the troupe literally massacred the Kurta Clan with zero mercy and left Kurapika alone and almost defenseless in an unfamiliar world. He destroyed everything Kurapika had. That’s not something Kurapika would or will forgive easily. Kurapika is literally destroying himself inside out because of what the troupe did to the Kurta Clan. This ship is just ugh it’s so toxic I hate >:(

Also again, even if Chrollo didn’t destroy the Kurta Clan, age difference. Kurapika’s the same age as Neon (17-19) and Chrollo is PUSHING 30!!!!! Icky!!!

Tbh this goes for any of the Troupe x Kurapika… gross age difference and disgusting enemies to lovers dynamic.

Pitokai (Neferpitou x Kite/Kaito)

One of my biggest icks ever is Victim x Killer because like how would YOU feel if you were violently murdered for seemingly no reason and then find out that there are people out there who think you and your killer would be cute if you dated O.O

Yeah it’s like… really toxic. I don’t have the energy to go into all the details of it but Killer x Victim has no reason to be as popular as it is…

Wisky (Wing x Bisky)

Teacher x Student dynamics really ick me as well… in most but not all cases the teacher is somewhat of a parental figure and the student is very young, in most cases a minor!!! We don’t exactly know if Wing was a kid when Bisky taught him nen since she refers to most people younger then as kids but the idea that she was extremely influential in his earlier years and has that older adult figure role in his life makes the idea of shipping them just.. it makes my skin crawl tbh ^^|||

Also there’s a HUGE age difference with Bisky being 57 and Wing being in his early 20s.

Gingkite (Ging x Kite/Kaito)

Again w the teacher x student guys… the same reasons as with Wisky expect we know for a fact that Ging met and started training Kite when he was a teenager! Makes this extra icky.

Again with the age difference! Ging is in his 30s I think maybe 40s? And Kite is in his early 20s. Pretty big age gap!!!

Any incestous Zoldyck ships

The fact that I even have to state this… dude… c’mon…. Incest is NOT cool chat!!

Any ships between the siblings? DISGUSTING!!

Between the kids and the parents? GRODY!!

Between Zeno and his grandkids? OUTRAGEOUS!!

Merupouf (Meruem x Shaiapouf)

Gonna be so fr w you guys… I used to ship this… i thought they were funny :’) I’VE RECOVERED DW!!! (/lh)

Uh yeah so the power dynamic is really erm!!! /neg I genuinely cannot go into detail about how toxic they are but I’ll try to summarize… Pouf has like a perfected version of Meruem in his head as the king but when Meruem starts to change for the better he rejects it and thinks he knows what’s best for the king and shit!!! Also Meruem treats his Royal guards like shit (at the beginning) their relationship gets only slightly better towards the end but it’s still abusive!!!

Also my friend pointed out that the Royal guards exist solely for Meruem. Like they are Meruem and Meruem only. Everything is for him and that adds like a super fucked up dynamic to this ship…

Also forgot to mention earlier, ANTCEST. All the chimera ants came from the same mom so shipping them is really weird even if they don’t all see eachother as siblings

Chapter 474 made me want InuKag to break up (temporarily)

There's something that always bothered me about this chapter, but I finally have the words to explain what it is. (This is the one with Kaou, the weird sadness eating demon that made Inuyasha have a dream of Kikyo and cry blood and stuff.)

Sigh. I don't agree with how the ending of this chapter was written (sorry, Rumiko). It made me, an InuKagger, feel devastatingly frustrated about InuKag's relationship for the first time... specifically for Kagome's dignity.

Okay, so Inuyasha's thoughts basically got blasted on speakerphone in the previous Ch:

UM, HI? Kagome is RIGHT FUCKIN' THERE. God, at that point, for Kagome's sake, I had had enough of it. I love InuKag, but in this moment, I don't give a frank fuck what Inuyasha has done to prove he loves Kagome, or what he truly thinks — for Kagome to hear that is so. damn. hurtful. And you know those words had hurt her: they echoed in her mind in a later panel. And she cried.

Up until now, Inuyasha had been reaping the benefits of Kagome's patience. But Kagome is HURTING as much as he is, and she keeps choosing not to show him that side of her because she feels sorry for him… GAH!

KAGOME, I LOVE YOU!!! BUT CAN WE? NOT SPOIL INUYASHA TOO MUCH? PLS...

I don’t mind that it took a villain like Kaou for Inuyasha to find out how much Kagome was hurting because of him. Pretty gnarly. However, I'm upset that Kagome herself didn’t fully admit to Inuyasha how hurt she got. And she shut up Kaou before he could say that the "cause of her pain"... was Inuyasha.

I get it — her reasons were personal. But I cannot express how FREAKIN' disappointed I still was about that. Let Inuyasha find out, DAMN IT!!!

I know; Kikyo had just passed on. Kagome was trying to be considerate, and Inuyasha's guilt toward Kikyo was probably made raw again — so I'm not faulting him for his feelings at all. Truly, I understand he's having hard time. AT THE SAME TIME, REALISTICALLY SPEAKING, it is clear it was not healthy for him to be in a relationship with Kagome at that point. And likewise for Kagome.

I wanted Kagome to stand up for herself. When Inuyasha told her that he dreamed of Kikyo, I wanted her to tell him something like, "Hey, I know she's on your mind, and that's okay, really, but... I just don't think I can endure it right now."

How would Inuyasha react to that? He’d probably be disquieted, but I think he’d try to accept it.

Yes, I guess it could come off as "selfish," because Inuyasha is grieving and having a hard time. But look... Kagome is hurt. She had been withstanding it all this time... she had been selfless enough. It is not selfish; it’s an act of self-love. She is her own person, no? She's entitled to look out for herself too, regardless of the circumstances.

Strength is also knowing when to retreat.

Instead of this chapter ending on a jokey note, I truly wanted Kagome to put a pause on their relationship. Have a lil’ time-out. Let Inuyasha grieve for Kikyo properly. Let Kagome be free to feel whatever it is for herself, with no strings attached.

Then, they can reconcile later when they're both at a better place.

From a writer's standpoint, WOOWEE that would've been a great cliffhanger. Tune in next week! LOL (Ok tbh Inuyasha prob wouldn’t last more than 3 days or something before he wants to get back with Kagome LMAO… but at least he knows how Kagome truly feels.)

No matter how much I love InuKag, I recognize a bad situation when I see one. I really... wanted Takahashi to make Kagome take a stand for her own well being. Just this once. JUST THIS DAMN ONCE.

It may seem important to put others first… but man, give yourself some love, too, Kagome.

Sorry… maybe I’m getting too carried away. (I’m seeing too much of my past self in her here.) And who knows? Maybe Takahashi didn’t have time for them to break up, or did this to show that Kagome, still a teenager, doesn’t always make perfect decisions. At any rate, I think Kagome's weakness is being too understanding sometimes :(

LOOK I’m not happy about this shit either but if we gotta be real I’ma be real and say yeah, I was a gleek (god saying that makes me wanna die, a piece of my soul shriveled fuck) when I was in high school it was a time okay I’m putting it on the list because glee was the reason I even logged on tumblr for the first time glee was one of those shows that was extremely formative to my fandom experience and fandom development during those late teen years. My original tumblr blog was dedicated to glee and eventually to manga/anime/comics and then I dipped for a bit and came back to tumblr blah blah blah glee was the start of my tumblr experience but also was the first time I ever actively engaged in a ship war (Which was STUPID i was so STUPID) like before I was a lurker but glee was the first show I openly participated in fandom 

and it’s a dumb show, it’s a bad show, it has some shining moments but lordly it was a mess and I was so invested in Britanna and Klaine at the beginning but by the end I was like they should NOT be together and honestly proud of myself for that it showed ~growth~ I also dropped the show idk mid-s4? Glee was the show that made me learn to drop things and not get caught up in sunk cost fallacy, if you’re not happy watching something, drop it.

THIS FUCKING SHOW this show was my first taste of any fandom ever I was still in elementary school and honestly way to young to be watching this shit but my GOD did I eat this shit up like nom nom nom it was so good hit all the fantasy action points it basically created the template for what I like in media: romance, action, adventure, friendships, fantasy 

I can still hear that adult swim commercial for the series in my head, one of the original memes (also screw kikyo still can’t stand her ass)

LISTEN this is a comfort show I love it to pieces Yugioh the abridged series is a fucking masterpiece I’ve rewatched this show so many times b/c it’s just fucking fun it makes NO SENSE why are they all so serious about ~children’s card games~ why does no one go to school why does grandpa have a god damn stroke after losing one card game why does joey sound like that it’s hilarious the shadow realm gaslit an entire generation of children I love every second of it

Kinnporsche 

okay here’s what y’all came here to see lmao Kinnporsche really grabbed my ass and slapped it like wtf I wasn’t expecting to get so invested in this show tbh b/c like I started watching BLs again but the ones I had watched from Thailand hadn’t GRABBED me they all ranged at the time from okay but wouldn’t watch again (Until We Meet Again, 1000 Stars) to boring-dropped it (Fish Upon a Sky, 2gether, Lovely Writer) the ones I had liked were mostly Korean and Taiwanese offerings (HiStory Trapped, Love is Science, We Best Love (seasons 1 AND 2 fight me), Be Loved: In House, You Make Me Dance, the one Korean assassin one). 

So like, I saw the trailer for KP and was like, oh that looks different and interesting from other Thai BL and then I saw it was canceled and was confuse. Then I saw it was un-cancelled and was MORE confused I was like is this show coming out or nah? But it was and I was like, sure why not? And I had just restarted using tumblr again and then the show started and the first episode HIT SO HARD and I was like “omg actual cinematography, actual camera framing, actual directing, actual locations, actual physical movement of the cast and the story, a larger story at play, COSTUMES” bitch I was hooked and I’m probably bias but KP is still the best conceptually executed Thai BL imo like sometimes I see posts about the cinematography of other Thai BL and it’s just pictures of two chars standing in a mid-lit room and I’m just like, god I’m a snobby ass bitch lemme leave lol 

KP isn’t perfect, there are issues with the plot at times, but like, there’s issues with the plot! Not the sound (rip LITA I still love you), or the lighting, or the editing, or the direction. The secondary cast actually feels like a cast rather than extras to fill out the cast or pad for time there’s like next to no filler in the show which is such a rarity (imo) for Thai BL. 

Love Between Devil and Fairy 

To me this show was peak fantasy epic romance I just love it to pieces, the costumes are to die for I wish America made more epic romances like this that really embrace fantasy, romance, and action one thing I really love about C-Dramas is they embrace romance with a certain sincerity that is missing from American dramas and I think it’s a shame 

I’m cheating that’s all I got in me I don’t watch a ton of TV shows and the ones I do I’m picky about so it’s hard to pick like a top anything lol but I think these ones describe me pretty well so

Well this only took me over a decade to do somehow, finally made some proper updated digital ref sheets for my classic gang of MLP OC's I used to draw all the damn time back in 2012

(Well, technically MOST of them are mine. Tide Pool is a shared OC actually created by one of my friends but that's beside the point lol).

Info about each of them under the cut:

Cherry Flower- probably one of my most popular MLP OC's that my online friends recognize, as she's still my favorite MLP OC I've created period. Cherry is the only member of her group with a relatively depressing backstory (because of course she is). She was prematurely born to cruel family that led a tribe of bandits and ruffians. Being the result of an unwanted birth, her parents and older siblings were often cruel and neglectful towards her, driving her to run away at a young age until she landed in Ponyville (long before Twilight did so this was before the Mane 6 met) and was taken in by her adoptive older brother Lightning Bolt.

After learning fighting skills to defend herself through martial arts training and subsequently stopping her evil father and his gang from carrying out a raid on Ponyville, she now is able to live a normal fulfilling life with her friends and new family

Tide Pool- Cherry Flower's love interest. Like I said, he's actually a shared OC with a friend so not 100% mine. In contrast to Cherry's brash demeanor, Tide is a more laid-back and calm Pegasus who helps Cherry Flower regain her self esteem and work through her trauma

Water Wave and Kikyo Bud- Cherry Flower and Tide Pool's foals. Never really fleshed out their personalities much tbh, just as innocent as you'd typically expect kids to be. Cherry Flower especially treasures them as she does her damnest to be a better parent to her children than her parents were to her

Lightning Bolt- Cherry Flower's aforementioned adoptive brother who took her in and raised her. Obviously as Cherry's loving older sibling, he tends to have a friendly aptitude towards others. Typically cool and carefree, he's also an unsuccessful flirt towards attractive mares, and had a one-sided crush on Rainbow Dash for years. Naturally he matures with age and drinks respect women juice rather than just trying to impress them, which is why he forms a genuine relationship with his new girlfriend Sugar Zip. Speaking of which...

Sugar Zip- Lightning Bolt's current girlfriend who played a big role in teaching him some manners and helping him grow. While she comes from a family primarily consisting of Pegasus rockstars, she chose a different path and runs her own sweets shop/bakery in Cloudesdale

Spark Pyre- A calm, quiet, hospitable unicorn who enjoys providing for his friends. As his name indicates, he specializes in fire magic which he utilizes for his favorite hobby of cooking hot tasty meals

Silver Dust- as I said a few times before, she's legit my VERY FIRST MLP OC I ever created back in 2012. Silver is an extroverted artistic unicorn who loves crafting and sculpting. i enjoy the manga, but i dont get the need for a panel by panel adaptation as i said. a lot of the inuyasha fandom is made of older nostalgic fans who watched the original as kids and have already read the manga yet it didnt change their opinion on kikyo/inukik. in fact they say the manga is more pro inukag for certain scenes, such as when he thinks "i regained my lost heart with kagome". i think a remake would make the ship wars even worse tbh. as for yashahime, i thought it was over?

As for InuKik and Kikyou, it deserved to have panel by panel animations. As for the rest of the characters and their scenes, I don't care. It's Kikyou who has been drastically changed and reduced to a "cold bitch" and InuKik as an unimportant ship, Kikyou acting like she doesn't care about Inuyasha and is mostly annoyed by his appearance. And I also love Kikyou in the anime, after all, I loved her first.

I also heard from InuKag that the manga is more pro InuKag, I'm of the opinion it's BS because of course Kagome also influenced Inuyasha's change and I don't take that away from her or anything but more this ship is toxic than anything else. Like I said, if anyone wanted to, they could go back to the original series. With your approach, series such as Furuba, Shaman King, Sailor Moon would never get a manga adaptation. And the adaptation is needed to give justice to Kikyou, what about "lost his heart to kagome" is clear that he fell in love with her, but the epilogue showed that despite marrying Kagome, he still loves Kikyou. He loves them both and that's it It won't get any worse now.. Kikyou still faces injustice. Ship wars in this fandom are and will not be worse.

Frustration and hatred would pour out again on poor Kikyou like after the epilogue animation. But Kikyou is insulted all the time, only the InuKag have woken up more, but it's them, so…

yashahime has manga sequels in which the author is not Rumiko, but the author himself said that yashahime is the "What If" which means it is not canon, and all the author reduces her role.

In today's episode of Robin Physically Cannot Handle One More "But Kagome Is InuYasha's Second Choice!" Bad Take:

Y'all, we need to have a conversation about character POV in storytelling, and how a character's perception of a situation can be wrong.

Despite actively curating my fandom experience to avoid such content, I’ve been seeing a number of folks argue that Kagome is InuYasha’s “second choice,” and he only ends up with her because Kikyo dies. While there are many, many reasons this is a certified Bad Take™, I want to concentrate on one specific reason. Y’see, the folks arguing that Kagome is a “second choice” use as their primary evidence that “even Kagome knows it’s true,” and will show a manga panel or anime screenshot of Kagome doubting InuYasha’s feelings for her. This is apparently supposed to be sufficient evidence for their argument.

That “evidence” operates on the assumption that Kagome’s perception of the situation—her insecurity that she’s “second best”—is the gospel truth of the narrative.

But the narrative repeatedly proves that assumption wrong.

I want to take a close look at chapter 332 as a case study of this. But before I do that, we need some of the context leading up to it.

Chapter 332 occurs after the Mt. Hakurei story arc. Naraku attacks and nearly fatally wounds Kikyo; InuYasha and the gang think she’s dead, only to discover she’s been laying low under the guise of Hijiri; Kagome then discovers Kikyo wounded at the waterfall and heals her from Naraku’s miasma. There are quite a few encounters with Kikyo leading up to chapter 332, and as a result Kagome’s insecurity flares up. (While we’re here: please refrain from bashing a 15-year-old girl for dealing with an insecurity that multiple characters help inflame early in the series, including Kikyo herself when she implies that Kagome is a “copy.” Many of Kagome’s mistakes and character flaws are triggered by her insecurity—relatable tbh—but she shouldn’t be bashed for being human enough to have insecurities ffs. Anyway.)

One of those insecurity flareups happens in chapters 315 - 316. Kikyo’s shinigami summon InuYasha to meet with her. He goes, and literally all they do is swap information about Naraku. Kikyo warns InuYasha that Naraku wants Kagome’s eyes (i.e., her ability to see the shards), and that they need to be careful. When InuYasha returns to the group, this is their reaction:

We the audience know that InuYasha is telling the truth here, but his friends don’t believe him. Kagome doesn’t entirely believe him. They all assume he’s shielding Kagome from what he and Kikyo “really did” together, but the narrative shows us that they’re wrong. InuYasha is telling them the truth, whether they accept it or not.

The same thing occurs in chapter 327. InuYasha goes to check on Kikyo—because he’s afraid she’s hurt—but is unable to find her.

When he returns to the group, they react this way:

Once again, Kagome and the others are convinced that InuYasha is hiding something, even though once again, the narrative explicitly shows us that InuYasha is telling them the truth. Their perceptions of the situation are wrong.

This becomes a consistent pattern when InuYasha and Kikyo meet privately: the group assumes the worst of InuYasha’s behavior/motives, and the narrative shows us that their suspicions are inaccurate. (I think RT intended this to be comedic: “haha, it’s funny because he’s telling the truth and no one believes him!” sort of a thing.) As a reader, to take Kagome and the group’s assumptions at face value would be a mistake—the narrative shows us that their assumptions are wrong, and it wants us to be in on that.

So! We finally reach chapter 332, my case study of choice. I chose this chapter specifically because a) it’s an excellent microcosm of the broader themes around the "love triangle" situation, and b) this is the only chapter I can remember Kagome expressly referring to herself as a “backup choice.” We get this scene of Kagome feeling insecure about InuYasha’s affection for her:

A lot of readers will be tempted to take Kagome’s insecurity here at face value. They’ll be tempted to think that if Kagome is feeling this way, then it must be true. Otherwise, why would she think this? (Oh, boy. Too much to unpack there.) But by this point in the series, the narrative has established a consistent pattern, remember? That pattern isn’t accidental. The story repeatedly shows us that Kagome’s perception of being “second best” to InuYasha is wrong. Her insecurity is real, but it’s lying to her.

And even if we disregarded that narrative pattern, we’d still know that Kagome’s assumption is wrong because the rest of 332 proves it to us. What happens right after Kagome worries about being InuYasha’s “backup choice”? He makes it abundantly obvious through his actions that she’s not. These are not the actions of a person who merely has tepid feelings for someone they’re “keeping on reserve” (🙄🙄), and if InuYasha truly had another person he preferred to spend time with, he’d be spending time with that person instead. Let’s review how chapter 332 finishes (sorry for the lack of manga caps in this section—I've already reached 10 images for this post 😤).

InuYasha comes to Kagome’s home and actively seeks time with her (I know I like to actively seek quality time with people I consider “backup” options 🙄)

He tries very hard to fix her bike, which is frankly adorable

He helps her grandpa do chores around the shrine (can you even imagine voluntarily doing manual labor with a crotchety old man for the sake of someone you consider a “backup”?? Yeah, me neither)

He very patiently engages with Kagome’s friends as they launch into what can only be described as an affable interrogation (I know I put up with baffling social situations for the sake of people who are just my “backup” options)

In other words, InuYasha actively chooses to spend his time with Kagome—he is in her time, in her house, in her presence—even when that means performing menial tasks that it is frankly difficult to imagine him doing in any other context. His actions invite the readers to see that there’s a disconnect between Kagome’s insecurities and reality. The narrative blatantly shows us that Kagome’s fears about InuYasha’s feelings are unfounded. And by the end of the chapter, even Kagome stops giving her doubts much credence:

So in summary: yes, I did just take nearly twelve-hundred words to say, “Stop taking character perspectives at face value.” I think folks in this fandom have the tendency to treat Kagome’s perspective as objectively true even when the narrative shows that it’s not. And that failure to pay attention to the rest of the narrative has created a lot of misconceptions about InuYasha’s character (e.g., the accusations that he’s “two-timing,” that he “led Kagome on,” etc.), and about his feelings for Kagome (e.g., “Kagome is InuYasha’s second choice”). The series pretty clearly shows that Kagome is nobody’s “backup choice” and that she has nothing to feel insecure about.

And nobody better tempt me to address all the other reasons why the “Kagome is InuYasha’s second choice” argument is stupid, or you’ll be reading a whole-ass novel about it.

The best thing about the Zoldyck family in HxH is that they are not at all lgbtqphobic, they just care that their family is successful and making money in the end even though it’s in the most toxic way possible.

They call Alluka and Nanika an “it” as in a creature, or “him” instead of the she/her pronouns they go by, not because they’re transphobic but because there is a literal demon/creature inside the child that can and will kill them if they make the wrong choice and say the wrong thing. Alluka is no longer their child, and while it is upsetting tbh if one of my family members has a creature inside of them or a split personality that can and will kill me I’m not gonna be favorable or respect them much either, it’s like being chill with a murderer that is on edge all the time and will kill you. Killua ofc is the exception Mf main character child so he’s obviously safe, but what about the rest of the family? They’re not.

Another thing is that Kikyo loves dressing up and stuff as shown by her outrageous clothes and her personality, you can’t tell me that the two of them wouldn’t have loved to dress up together, and according to the hunterpedia Kalluto is jealous of Alluka so other than a simple sibling jealousy there would be no problems between the two. The rest of the family seems to have no problems with Alluka other than Nanika so safe to say she would be chill even if she was trans as long as she continued to help with family business and didn’t have Nanika.

Also Illumi is literally married to Hisoka, and there hasn’t been any type of resistance based off of what his family would say. If the family was lgbtqphobic he would’ve turned it down immediately even if money and their reputation actually not so sure if this so don’t take my word for gold was at stake, so safe to say that the family is not lgbtqphobic.

All of this is just to say that a literal abusive family of assassins is more welcoming and accepting than the average fucking person. Aka me overthinking during practice as my mind wanders during breaks and drills.

Probably my most negative comments on Rin here. I'm just so over her fucking character in YH. She's been the same child she was in IY. She's been blindly loyal and obedient to Sesshomaru. She's shown to stupidly care more about the villains lives over her supposed kids. She, what was it, stole her kids' sleep or dreams or whatever just because. Oh, and she's so "elegant" and "Kikyo-like" with her now stoic expressions and behavior.

Like wtf are we supposed to take from her???

And my 2 cents on how I feel she'd naturally grow as a person. She'd still be optimistic and chipper. Like come on, she died multiple times as a kid and was still happy as can be. Getting older isn't gonna change that about her.

And no, she wouldn't prioritize an evil villain over her friends and family. Maybe she wouldn't advocate for their demise but she wouldn't be trying to look out for them.

And lastly I never see her acting as a fake Kikyo replacement. Seriously. Rin would've latched onto her kids and hugged the hell out of them. Not sit politely near her abusers' feet and saying they both will hug them later while looking like this 😐

Her character as adult... I agree that she would still be a cheerful person. Maybe changed a bit, because that's just how we are in adulthood right? We lose a bit part of ourselves due to circumstances, but the core remains the same.

But if someone threatened and/or actively try to harm your children or loved ones, you don't put a pity on or ask them to be saved. It's just plain stupid 😂😂😂 idk really, everything about this show is stupid. They tried so hard to recreate Kagome 2.0 via Rin and Towa by making them appear as kind-hearted and self-less as possible but it just ended up making them look stupid and naive 🤣🤣 As kind as someone can be, there are boundaries to how much kindness can someone give to others. am i the only person who sees no solid proof of inuyasha loving kikyo more in either manga or anime? Like I love dog boy, but most of his promises/devotion to kikyo to me only seemed to be born out of survivors guilt and it never really felt like he was in love with her anymore after she was revived. To me they always seemed like empty promises because he never…. protects her? after he said he would, like yes he would check in on her every now and then but then he’d leave her alone and go back to kagome. People always say they feel bad for kagome when he leaves her but tbh i pity kikyo more because he only goes to check on her for a few mins then goes back to the person he actually wants to be around. And that whole ep47 goes down the drain bc a) they never bring up him going to hell with her again and b) he and kagome immediately reconcile and it’s like he forgets about his promise to kikyo he made literally the ep before. Sometimes it feels like kikyo was just a plot device for inukag and it reminds me of that one interview when rumiko said something along the lines of adding in kikyo scenes because she liked the tension she created. idk it just confuses me when people say anime inukag is bad when to me it’s not, i mean i obvs prefer the manga but yeah.

You definitely aren’t the only one who thinks there wasn’t enough solid proof of Inuyasha’s romantic feelings toward Kikyo. I say “romantic” specifically because most of their interactions throughout the story were purely transactional. However moments in chapters 173-176 did have more intimate undertones to it, with Inuyasha pulling Kikyo back into his arms and telling her to call him if she needs him. Which btw, they absolutely butchered that sweet moment in the anime with her pulling a KNIFE on him (lol ok sunrise) But aside from that and her final death scene, there wasn’t much there indeed.

Kikyo kissed him early on, he didn’t exactly reciprocate her kiss, he just stood there and I think his intention was to appease her tormented soul. Afterall, most of his emotions towards her stem from guilt. He cares about her a great deal but not enough to actually be there by her side day in and day out. Hell, the episode right after, Miroku calls him out on wanting to become a full demon because he wishes to protect Kagome. It didn’t take long for his selfish goals (tessaiga, full demon blood to strengthen him) to become resources to protect Kagome instead. The sword pulses when it wants Inuyasha to protect her and I think it’s a lot to do with the fact that she was the one who pulled out the sword. Also, as @inukag referenced before, it’s been said by Inuyasha that tessaiga and himself are one soul. And because of that, the sword senses how much Kagome means to its master.

It’s Kagome that he reassures/tries to calm down. Never did he reassure Kikyo about anything regarding his and Kagome’s relationship. Not that Kikyo’s jealousy was shown as much as Kagome’s but still. It’s there.

Kikyo served an important role in Inuyasha and Kagome’s relationship coming to be and aside from that, she definitely was the reason for tension between them too. Then again, Koga was too. His persistence in wooing Kagome pissed Inuyasha off so much, and despite him being the feudal feminist, he did harbour feelings of possessiveness with Kagome.

Kagome would have rather had Inuyasha all to herself as well, without Kikyo’s interference. Inuyasha and Kagome had really similar insecurities stemming from their feelings for eachother.

Sinrise Studios butchered a lot of InuKag moments and omitted them completely. If fans are only watching the anime, I get that they aren’t convinced that they’re a great pairing.
