I need BookTubers and Bookstagramers—and other people who publicly critique writing on their platforms—to understand that a run-on sentence is not just an overlong sentence. Please, for the love of cheddar cheese, please. I cannot listen to another one of them critique a book for having long sentences by saying "it has way too many run-ons." No it doesn't, Becky!! That's a completely different thing!
This is a minor bugaboo that probably no one cares about, but it consistently bugs me. If you are publicly critiquing someone's writing style, then you need to pay attention to what your terminology communicates to your audience. A run-on sentence (which, in my experience, most often takes the form of a comma splice) is an improperly structured sentence—it's literally bad grammar. Saying that a book has "too many run-on sentences" implies that the writer doesn't understand basic sentence structure. (Not getting into how writers intentionally break grammatical rules for artistic effect—that's beside the point here.)
Now, an overlong sentence may feel laborious for some readers to get through, but it's not inherently bad grammar. A long sentence can still have solid grammatical structure. It's just a stylistic choice. Whether or not long sentences constitute bad writing is completely subjective. So saying to your audience that a book "has too many long sentences" is a more accurate critique and also avoids implying that the writer literally can't put a sentence together.
#i spent 7+ years of my life as a professional writing tutor so that certainly informs my irritation#and believe me i saw sooooooooo many run-on sentences in that time#and they were almost exclusively short sentences#BECAUSE 'RUN-ON' DOESN'T MEAN LONG

Cross the Tracks
Chapter 13 The Crash and Burn
Summary: Kagome is from an affluent family. Inuyasha lives on the street. Tragedy at the death of her only remaining parent sees Kagome ousted from her home and sent to finishing school so she can prepare to be a wife- whether she likes it or not. In need of a break from her fast track to misery, Kagome sneaks away and runs off to a place once forbidden to her, and is pulled out of trouble by a mysterious boy she feels drawn to. Two worlds collide and two hearts struggle against the paths the world has set them on, but love prevails in the most surprising of ways. It’s Lady and the Tramp… with a twist!
Read on: AO3
——————————preview——————————
His brother always watched him like a hawk.
And if not his brother, than his gods damned sister-in-law who always looked like she was scheming something.
Inuyasha had played nice so far, let them dress him up like a little doll and teach him to eat and speak and dance like a gentleman but tonight he was making a break for it.
And he would succeed.
