On May 7, 2019, a disturbed student hiding guns walked into the STEM High School in Highlands Ranch, a suburb of Denver, Colorado. His intention was to kill as many students as he could.

He pulled out a gun and yelled, “Nobody move!”

Rather than being a helpless, frightened victim, 18 year old senior Kendrick Castillo, who was close by, attacked the gunman. Castillo was shot in the chest and died, but his actions inspired several other students to do the same and gave them the time needed to close in. The gunman was disarmed and held until police arrived to arrest him. The gunman is now serving life without parole in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Kendrick was just three days away from graduating.

At the same time, that gunman’s partner entered the middle school across the street with the intention of doing the same thing. She (born female but claiming to be transitioning to male) was tackled and disarmed by a security guard and held for police. She is also now serving a life sentence in the Colorado Department of Corrections, but because she was 16 years old at the time, she is eligible for parole after 40 years.

Kendrick Castillo was the only death, though eight other students were wounded.

I intentionally did not use the names of the shooters. They do not deserve that recognition. This is a picture of Kendrick Castillo, a face that not enough people have seen and whose story not enough people have heard of.

Connection Description:

Your character would be a coven member who has been wary about Jasmine since she first joined the coven. They know that she used to/have seen her perform dark magic and have been concerned about what her presence in the Coven could mean, especially if she ever were to perform dark magic again.

Your character would be a light witch who is dedicated to the Coven. They could have grown up in it or found their way to Lunar Cove later in life. But, they would have been in town on July 4th of 2023 when their supreme, Poppy Reed, died and was brought back to life by her sister, Jasmine.

While your character would have voted to bring Poppy back at the time and, still love and feel thankful that their supreme is alive, they weren't aware at the time of the spell that their own life may have been on the line.

The consequence for bringing a life back from the dead is that death will come and claim and life in return. Everyone at the time assumed, from what Jas alluded to, that death would come and claim the life of someone close to Jas for bringing Poppy back. But, what they didn't know is that the rules for witches within a coven are different. Because Jasmine was a coven member at the time of the spell, the life death came to claim was within the coven.

After the loss of Poppy's mother's life for Poppy to live, you decided that dark magic within the coven should never be used again. While you respect Poppy decisions as your supreme, you secretly view her half-sister to be a huge liability and are counting down the days until she gets kicked out.

this is kendrick castillo. he was an award winning member of the robotics team. in three days he would have been graduating high school. instead of celebrating his graduation, his parents will be having to plan his funeral. he bravely lunged at the shooter to save his classmates and was shot & killed doing so. even though what kendrick did was selfless and he will be remembered as a HERO. no child should ever have to be put in a situation like kendrick was, they should be able to go to school safely to learn and succeed in life not to have it be cut short by gun violence.

Kendrick Castillo was the only fatality in yesterday’s shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado. He was 18 years old, a four year member of the school robotics team, held multiple technology internships and was set to graduate on May 10th.

The reason he’s the only fatality is because he charged at one of the shooters, giving his classmates the opportunity to run.

I don’t know the shooters names and I don’t care to. The only names that should be named or remembered in these situations are the names of the victims and the heroes; people like Kendrick Castillo.

I know I don’t talk about every shooting (that would be exhausting) but this story struck me particularly hard because of the fact that in his final moments he decided that he was going to act. He had no guarantee that what he was going to do was going to save anyone but he did it anyway. Kids shouldn’t have to make that kind of decision.

I have no snappy way to end this post, all I can say is this shouldn’t keep happening. Kendrick Castillo had so many opportunities ahead of him but they were denied to him because even after two decades since Columbine, nothing has been done to improve gun safety and mental health funding. Kids are dying because of incompetent adults. It’s that simple.
