On May 7, 2019, a disturbed student hiding guns walked into the STEM High School in Highlands Ranch, a suburb of Denver, Colorado. His intention was to kill as many students as he could.
He pulled out a gun and yelled, “Nobody move!”
Rather than being a helpless, frightened victim, 18 year old senior Kendrick Castillo, who was close by, attacked the gunman. Castillo was shot in the chest and died, but his actions inspired several other students to do the same and gave them the time needed to close in. The gunman was disarmed and held until police arrived to arrest him. The gunman is now serving life without parole in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Kendrick was just three days away from graduating.
At the same time, that gunman’s partner entered the middle school across the street with the intention of doing the same thing. She (born female but claiming to be transitioning to male) was tackled and disarmed by a security guard and held for police. She is also now serving a life sentence in the Colorado Department of Corrections, but because she was 16 years old at the time, she is eligible for parole after 40 years.
Kendrick Castillo was the only death, though eight other students were wounded.
I intentionally did not use the names of the shooters. They do not deserve that recognition. This is a picture of Kendrick Castillo, a face that not enough people have seen and whose story not enough people have heard of.

door sensors to campuses ahead of new school year
door sensors to campuses ahead of new school year
Crews within Denver Public Schools have had a busy summer fortifying campuses as the nation continues to address school safety. To get more news about security door sensors, you can visit securamsys.com official website.
According to DPS director of support services, Melissa Craven, more than 900 cameras have been replaced, and more than 1,200 new cameras will be installed across all district schools ahead of the upcoming fall semester. In addition to the cameras, Craven says a new security system along the exteriors of the campus was also installed this Summer.
"We had over 5,000 doors that we had to install this technology on," Craven said.
The newly-installed sensors will trigger an alarm each time an exterior door that is supposed to be shut is either propped open or breached from the outside. "I could give you all the flashy bells and whistles and the greatest notification systems and technology, but if I have a door on the back of the building that's unsecured, that one door defeats anything that we can install inside the building," Craven said. When an alarm is triggered, staff will immediately have access to a map and cameras showing the door in question. School officials will also be able to place the campus on lockdown and alert authorities with a push of a button.
It's similar to the system Boulder Valley School District installed last year. During that time, the district also added entry vestibules, electronic door locks, additional cameras, and an ID system students use to gain access to certain areas of campus.
BVSD chief communication officer Randy Barber said they used this summer to optimize those new security systems and are working to hire critical positions for the new school year.
"We're in the process of actually bringing more counselors in to our school district right now," Barber said. "We know that the mental health of our students is incredibly important."
Meantime, a Cherry Creek Schools spokeswoman said they've installed new technology in each classroom that allows teachers to lock their doors with a push of a button. Entry vestibules are also being constructed on Cherry Creek Schools campuses.
In Douglas County, commissioners pledged millions of dollars toward school safety following the STEM School shooting in Highlands Ranch in 2019. On Monday, Denver7 Investigates will reveal why it's taken so long for that money to be spent and what the school district has done to improve school safety.

1200+ year sentence for STEM School shooter
This past Friday, 20-year-old Devon Erickson was sentenced for his role in the 2019 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado. Erickson was 18 at the time of the shooting. When Erickson produced his gun in a classroom, he was immediately rushed by 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo, who slammed Erickson up against a wall. Castillo saved a countless number of students, but tragically…

My kids go to Stem School Highlands Ranch (High School and Elementary) and I’m glad to say are safe and still processing what happened.
I’ve already seen posts sharing innocent looking pictures of one of the shooters, and it makes me ill. We need to stop giving these people any attention, beyond basic information. Instead, we should focus on people like Kendrick Castillo, a senior who would have graduated next week, who didn’t hesitate to jump up and try to tackle one of the shooters, costing him his life, but giving his fellow students time to take cover, saving more in the process.
Or Brandon Bialy and Joshua Jones, who also rushed the gunmen. Joshua was shot in the leg, but said in an interview that he plans to be off crutches and walk across the stage at Graduation next week. Brandon came away uninjured, thankfully. Also all of the teachers, staff and first responders who kept the rest our kids safe and reunited them with us in an organized and timely manner, even if it felt like forever to us parents.
I’m thankful to every single one of them because if not for everyone who helped that day, this could have been so much worse and more of us might not be hugging our babies today.
The time will come for discussions about how to stop these tragedies, but we can start by focusing on the people who dd their part to keep as many people as possible safe. They are the people we should focus on. Making martyrs out of those who wanted to kill and hurt people doesn’t help anyone.

During his interrogation at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, 18-year-old Devon Erickson told detectives he acted under the force of 16-year-old Alec McKinney, his accomplice in the murder of one student at STEM School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
The night before the shooting McKinney reportedly messaged him through Snapchat and told him not to come to school tomorrow. He said he was “super suicidal” and looking to get revenge on numerous people, even considering killing his mother and siblings. Alec threatened to kill him if he told anyone.
McKinney first thought of the idea, specifically targeting classmates who engaged in name-calling and purposely misgendered him, a few weeks prior when he learned Devon’s parents owned guns that were kept in a safe inside the house. During lunchtime on May 7, 2019, Erickson allowed him to come over, and of his own admission, he “trashed” the place in search of a key to the safe. He found an axe and a crowbar in the basement, and the two of them each tried hacking the safe open after Alec again threatened his life. They eventually pried open the door with the crowbar. Four weapons were found inside the safe, a Glock 21 and Beretta m9 pistols, a Taurus revolver, and a Ruger .22-caliber rifle, along with the required ammunition. McKinney wrote on the closet wall “the voices win” with nail polish, and they spray painted “fuck society” on Devon’s mother’s car in the garage before loading the weapons into Erickson’s vehicle. He concealed the rifle in his guitar case, but there is a discrepancy of who had which of the other three in their possession.
While in the car, Erickson stated Alec told him “he would let him live if Devon told everyone to stay still and if he watched the second door” of the classroom he planned to target. Devon first dropped off the guitar case in Room #107 and told the teacher he was sick, who sent him to the office accompanied by another student. Now separated from Alec, he intended to report him, but was overcome with a panic attack and went to the bathroom instead. After he calmed down and reached the office, Alec was waiting for him. They returned to classroom 107 together, where Devon again tried to alert someone, but they weren’t “paying attention.” When he thought he saw McKinney reaching for a gun, he pulled out one of the pistols and ordered “everyone to get down” or “nobody move,” according to Alec. Erickson was immediately tackled by students, which caused the gun to discharge. McKinney meanwhile expended all rounds from his two weapons at students inside the classroom. Afterwards, in an attempt to flee, he was confronted at gunpoint by a security guard and surrendered.
In his interview, McKinney described his motivation by stating “he wanted the kids at the school to experience bad things, have to suffer from trauma like he has had to do in his life. He wanted everyone in that school to suffer and realize that the world is a bad place.”

Hi, I'm too upset to actually make a sensible, well organized argument or awareness post about this. I'm too angry for that. Instead, here are my unfiltered thoughts.
I live 13 minutes away from the Highlands Ranch STEM School in which 8 students, so far, have been injured. There was a shooting there today by multiple suspects.
My best friend, a person who SAVED MY LIFE when I was suicidal, and who was suicidal at the time of the shooting, goes to the Middle School there, the specific branch that was shot at.
I always thought that something like this wouldn't happen to me. It happens to other people in different countries, in different states, in different towns. And then it happened here. My home town. To my fucking best friend.
I am furious. I am livid that this country cannot fucking protect the very thing guiding it to the future, it’s children. Next thing you know it’s gonna be your kid nearly killed in a shooting. Your kid who is having to flee their school in fear of their life being taken away from them. Your child who has to go to a fuck ton of therapy because someone else who shouldn’t have gotten their hands on a gun did.
I don’t want your fucking thoughts and prayers. I don’t fucking give a shit. This is our responsibility, our lives that are being stolen because of your stupidity. I don’t give a damn if you outlaw guns, if you put harsher background checks on them, or if you do routine check-ups on gun-owners. Just, for my fucking best friend’s safety, stop doing nothing.
I’m sick of it. I’m sick that I had to have this fucking wake-up call, to remind me that these are real people’s lives, to actually feel something. Shootings happened so often that whenever I heard about them, I thought Oh, another one. That fucking sucks. Can we do something about it please? Instead of taking fucking action. Instead of crying, screaming about it and PLEADING to people in power to do something.
I am seething. The only thing to get me to wake up was to fear for my best friend’s life. To get no response. To call anyone and everyone might have known anything about his safety. If he was alive. If he was okay.
For my best friend’s sake, for the person that saved my life, that taught me the beauty of life, do something about school shootings.
