"NOBLE HOUSE" (1988) Review
Tumblr media
"NOBLE HOUSE" (1988) Review
Between 1962 and 1993, author James Clavell wrote and published a series of novels centered on Europeans living in Asia. Some of the novels featured a family founded by a Scottish-born sailor named Dirk Struan, who became a trader in early 19th century China. And one of those novels was "Noble House", published in 1981.
Clavell's novel centered around one of Struan's descendants, Ian Dunross, who struggled to save the family company from a precarious financial position left by the previous CEO or "tai-pan" in the British colony, Hong Kong. Dunross sought a partnership with an American billionaire named Linc Barlett of Par-Con Industries, in the hopes of rescuing Struan's from financial ruin and a possible takeover by his family's long-time rival, Quinlan Gornt of Rothwell-Gornt. However, matters grew worse for Dunross and the company when the oldest son of Struan's comprador, Philip Chen, sold both company secrets and "coin debt" in the form of one of four half-coins that was given to Dirk Struan 146 years ago, to Barlett. This enabled Barlett to seek a partnership with Gornt in the hopes of making a raid on Struan's. When Philip's son, John Chen, ended up kidnapped by a local street gang, the value of the "coin debt", which ended up in the hands of wealthy smuggler named Four Fingers Wu. And this left Dunross and Struan's vulnerable to another threat.
I first read "Noble House" in my early twenties. Looking back on it, I now realize it was a good thing I had read previously read Clavell's 1966 novel, "Tai-Pan" and saw the 1986 movie adaptation. If not, I would have found myself confused over the family feud that served as a backdrop to the Dunross-Gornt feud and the history of the "coin debt". This involved four half-coins given to Dirk Struan by a Chinese trader named Jinqua in "Tai-Pan", as repayment for the loan of silver. Any CEO or "tai-pan" of Struan's must fulfill the request, whether legal or illegal, to anyone who presents one of the half coins that Jinqua originally kept. I ended up enjoying the 1981 novel very much. But I had some issues with it. Issues that had thankfully failed to materialized in "NOBLE HOUSE", the 1988 miniseries.
One of the issues centered around secret intelligence documents that Dunross found himself in possession of, thanks to his MI-6 contact. These documents ended up being sought by various intelligence agencies, including the MI-6, the C.I.A. and the K.G.B. However, this story arc had nothing to do with Dunross's efforts to save Struan's, so screenwriter Eric Bercovici ditched it. He also removed another story arc featuring an entourage of visiting members of Parliament - which included Dunross' Labor brother-in-law. Again, this arc had very little to do with the main one involving Dunross's business situation.
The miniseries had also removed several characters, including K.G.B. agent Captain Suslev, a visiting author and former Royal Air Force veteran named Peter Marlowe (from the 1962 novel, "King Rat"), Dunross's wife and children (he is a childless widower in the miniseries), Dunross's brother-in-law Robin Grey (also from "King Rat") and especially Dunross's wife Penelope and their three children. In the miniseries, Dunross is a childless widower, enabling him to have a romance with Par-Con executive Casey Tcholok. The biggest change proved to be the story's timeline. Bercovici updated the story's setting from August 1963 to November 1987, allowing it to be a modern tale. This enabled several characters like Linc Barlett and Casey Tcholok to mention Great Britain's future 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China.
I do have some minor complaints regarding "NOBLE HOUSE". One, I found Paul Chihara's score for the miniseries unmemorable and almost pedantic. And speaking of the score, I really disliked the cheesy aspect of the theme Chihara had created for the Orlanda Ramos character. It almost sounded like something for a soft-porn movie. Very insulting for a character like Orlanda, who proved to be more complicated. I also had a problem with some of the dialogue featured in "NOBLE HOUSE". This especially seemed to be the case in scenes featuring dialogue between European and Chinese characters or simply between Chinese characters. I found the dialogue rather awkward, exaggerated and very stylized. I realize the screenwriter was simply copying some of James Clavell's dialogue from the novel. But I really wish he had not.
Despite my complaints, I really enjoyed "NOBLE HOUSE". Every time I watch it, I am always surprised at how epic it seemed by the end of the last episode. And mind you, this story had very little to do with history. It was simply a mixture of the usual melodrama involving sex, romance, financial dealings and family conflicts. Even one of the story arcs, which featured Cold War espionage, managed to have an impact on the narrative's main arc regarding Ian Dunross's financial situation. Most people would be disappointed that this television adaptation was not completely faithful to Clavell's novel. Frankly, I am relieved. Bercovici managed to cut some of the superfluous story arcs and prevent the miniseries from becoming bloated. Yet, he still managed to retain Clavell's epic feel for the narrative. And he achieved this with the help of director Gary Nelson, who provided an overall steady pace in scenes that range from dramatic and action moments. Nelson's handling of the floating restaurant fire and the landslide that destroyed an apartment complex in the final episode really impressed me.
"NOBLE HOUSE" proved to be one of those productions that featured an international cast. Aside from a handful of performances, most struck me as being pretty solid. I must admit that I found those from the likes of Burt Kwok, Lim Kay Tong, Gordon Jackson, Denholm Elliott, Lisa Lu, Michael Siberry, Tia Carrere, John Houseman, Brian Fong, Ric Young, John van Dreelen, Nancy Kwan, Damien Thomas, Galen Yuen, George Innes and Dudley Sutton rather memorable. But there were certain performances that I truly enjoyed.
One of those performances came from the always memorable Khigh Dhiegh, who struck me as very colorful as one of Hong Kong's premiere smugglers, Four Fingers Wu. Ben Masters' take on the Lincoln "Linc" Bartlett characters seemed less boyish and more mature that Clavell's literary version. And to be honest, Masters' interpretation struck me as a lot more plausible as the witty and ruthless corporate CEO. I am more familiar with actor Ping Wu, thanks to his frequent appearances on NBC's "SEINFELD". But I really enjoyed his performance as Four Fingers Wu's youngest son, the intelligent and frustrated Paul Choy, who seemed incapable of impressing his father with his more modern outlook on how to profit outside of smuggling. Julia Nickson gave a very poignant performance as Orlanda Ramos, a local Eurasian television journalist and former mistress of Quillan Gornt. Thanks to Nickson's skillful performance, Orlanda evaded the superficial trope of a one-dimensional, walking sex toy; who became an intelligent, yet emotional woman who desired to be more than someone's bed warmer.
I might as well confess. Despite James Clavell's efforts, the character of Quillan Gornt never became a favorite of mine. His role as Dunross's main rival had nothing to do with my attitude. But I cannot deny that John Rhys-Davies gave one hell of a performance as the ruthless CEO who seemed to radiate wit, presence and a penchant for petty behavior. Casey Tcholok seemed like a difficult character to portray. Actress Deborah Raffin could have easily portray her as this ideal, "Mary Sue" type. Fortunately, James Clavell never portrayed Casey in that manner and neither did Raffin. Although the latter's take on the character seemed a bit more mature than her literary counterpart, Raffin expertly conveyed many of Casey's nuances - her razor-sharp intelligence, impatience, her talent for observation, her fears of being overlooked as a more than competent business person and her wit. However, Raffin's Casey struck me as a bit more sardonic than Clavell's literary version. Pierce Brosnan looked nothing like the literary Ian Dunross. Although both are tall, the latter possessed slightly wavy blond hair and the actor is definitely a brunette. The literary Dunross was in his early 40s, whereas Brosnan was only 34 years-old when he shot "NOBLE HOUSE". And yet . . . the Irish-born actor more than lived up to the role of Struan's CEO with a commanding performance without trying to hard. Brosnan wore the role very well - tight on the inside and relaxed on the outside. He not only portrayed Dunross's intelligence and ruthlessness with great skill, but also conveyed the CEO's growing concerns over losing the company and desperate attempts to save it without resorting to any kind of histrionic acting. By the time the miniseries ended, Brosnan had embedded into the role so well that I had completely forgotten that he was the wrong age to portray Dunross and possessed the wrong hair color.
"NOBLE HOUSE" never really acquired the acclaim that both television versions of James Clavell's 1975 novel, Shōgun or the movie version of the author's 1962 novel, "King Rat" had. But thankfully, it was no "TAI-PAN". Not that I care. I am not claiming that "NOBLE HOUSE" was mediocre. On the contrary, I thought it was a skillful and excellent adaptation of the 1981 novel. The latter is my favorite Clavell novel and I was more than happy that NBC had did more than simply justice to it, thanks to Gary Nelson's well-paced direction, Eric Bercovici's tight screenplay and performances from a first-rate cast led by Pierce Brosnan and Deborah Raffin. It has been years since I first saw it and to this day, I have yet to grown tired of it.

For about the past three decades the Republican caucus on Capitol Hill has become increasingly crazy because most of the less crazy ones have refused to stand up to their deranged colleagues.
The earlier one challenges dysfunctional radicalization, the more likely it will have an effect.
The GOP went off the deep end for good in 2016 when it adopted Donald Trump as its Lord and Savior. Many of them knew this would be problematic but they went along anyway.

hii hellooo, may i request brothers with a clown core mc? their outfits most often being very colorful but their personality being the opposite? like somewhat cold and very blunt, not talking much and if talking then it’s about something mildly disturbing like murder investigations or an odd fascination with deadly diseases stuff like that
sorry that it’s extremely specific and thank you regardless _(┐「ε:)_
Clown Anon MCs - [ Clowncore MC | Death-Fixated Science Geek MC | LeVeyan Satanist MC ]
When you first arrived, no one was sure what to think. They looked you over. Your pink hair, your cyan shorts. A yellow T-shirt and rainbow suspenders. Gaudy makeup and adorable pink tennis shoes. Beaded bracelets and necklaces and colorful tights.
And a box of smokes in your back pocket.
"Welcome to the House of Lamentation," Lucifer says, gesturing grandly at the stately mansion ahead of you.
You say nothing. Instead, you pull out a cigarette and a lighter. Taking a drag, you lazily gaze at the house, then back at your host, who looks disgusted.
"Make sure you only do that outside," he says, nodding to the box of cigarettes in your hand.
You blow a puff of smoke in his face and start walking to the door, completely ignoring the sounds of Lucifer struggling to contain his rage.
"Why's it called that?" you finally ask as you stop at the front doors. "'House of Lamentation'?"
Lucifer, having composed himself by now, steps up beside you. "This is a replica of a house from the human world," he explains. "In it, an entire family was murdered; the parents, the servant, and six of their seven sons. The seventh--"
"Ohhh. This is the Sutton house," you say, nodding.
"Excuse me?"
"The Sutton house. Massachusetts, 1923. Elijah Sutton, oldest of seven sons, runs into the local tavern screaming that his servant killed the whole family and himself. Most folks today think it was Elijah who really did it. I know I do."
You take one more drag from your cigarette, then drop it on the ground and put it out with the heel of your shoe.
"So this is their house, huh? Sick."
---
It's breakfast on your second day in the Devildom. You took extra time to apply your godawful makeup this morning, and you're sure it shows, because the brothers keep glancing at you as if they're not quite sure what they should say.
"You talk to them, Mammon," mumbles Satan. "You're their babysitter."
"Ah... ahem." Mammon casts a glare at his brother, then looks at you. "So, uh... Human." You stare at him with a dead-eyed expression that seems to unnerve him even more. "...We're goin' to RAD today, and there's a couple a things you should know." You continue staring.
Mammon looks to his brothers for help, but they all avoid eye contact. "Uhhh... Just... try not to get eaten, 'kay? Lucifer'll be pissed if you die on my watch."
"Do demons eat people?" you ask. "Like, raw?"
"Sometimes! So don't mess around with 'em, got it?"
"That's gotta be messy as fuck."
"It is!"
"You got any photos?"
"....Eh?"
---
"So I get that you're the seven deadly sins," you say to Satan, sprawled out in an armchair in the library, "but like... is that all you guys got here?"
Satan, who had been minding his own business and innocently reading a book of curses, looks irritated. "Is that all of what?"
"I dunno. Bad shit shaped like people." You shrug. "Like, you got the Four Horsemen or somethin'?"
"Of course not," Satan snaps. "That would be ridiculous."
You shrug. "Embodiment of plague? Too ridiculous to believe. Embodiment of wrath? Well, obviously that's a thing."
---
"You have to make pacts with Lucifer and his brothers," Belphie urges you through the door. You stare at him, then take a drag from your cigarette. As long as Lucifer is occupied in the music room with that weird record, you're going to break every rule in this damn house.
"How am I supposed to do that? Am I gonna split up my soul Horcrux style? Give everybody a slice?"
Belphie stares at you for a few seconds. You don't realize how badly he wishes he could kill you in this moment. "Are you going to help me or not?"
You shrug. "What do I get out of it?"
He blinks at you in utter bewilderment. "You... make me happy?"
You stare at him. He stares at you. You stare at him. He continues to stare at you.
You head back down the stairs.

idk if you explained this, but how do sarah and kai meet?
i alluded but i never got into it! basically kai's family got into some money (lottery? settlement? dead relative? nobody knows and her family wont tell) and so they move from the cut to figure 8. not one of the monster mansions but still a nice sized place, and lucky for the Sutton's its midsummers.
this is kais first time ever stepping foot over there, she normally works on the cut and she's drawing all sorts of attention to herself. not on purpose but she has bright turquoise hair and shes going crazy at the refreshments table.
sarah dives in, she's intrigued, and she loves her saint sarah reputation (althout those in her circle know better) so she takes it upon herself to introduce herself to kai and from then on she's taken her on as a project. the last thing she wants to admit is shes doing this because shes developed a crush

Preference Request: The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills OCs + Kinks, please? Thank you!
Camden Barnes: Camden enjoys erotic wrestling. Sweaty, body to body contact, twisting and turning, fighting to pin Adrienne down, and wanting to end up ecstatic and on top, or almost even more thrilling, when Adrienne gets the upper hand on her. There are connections to the professional sport, of course, which she used to do as a career, but with extensions that make it a sexual act in and of itself.
Janice Bailey: Janice is into light impact play. Camille with a riding crop is the ultimate thing to get her to submit, not that she doesn’t already give in almost solely to Camille's pleasure most times. She also really loves a good show/lap dance from Camille, and Camille is all too happy to flaunt her moves.
Jocelyn Page: Jocelyn doesn’t really have a set kink that she’s really into, but she’s very open to experimentation. She does get a bit hot and bothered over Kyle's flexibility, but she doesn’t really consider that a kink of hers, she just thinks it’s hot.
Joey Maynard: Praise. Joey loves praise. To hear Sutton say "Good girl" or basically anything complimentary in that sexy southern accent of hers makes Joey absolutely melt. She’s also a sucker for hearing how Sutton's voice gets when she makes her beg after a whole bunch of teasing.
Kira Kay: Kira is into CGL play, to a moderate degree. She’s doesn’t truly regress, but she loves to have Kim play a mommy role and it’s even expanded into a bit of a breastfeeding kink as well. It’s a little about comfort, and a little about actual sexual gratification.
Rayna Max: Rayna enjoys a little roleplay and dirty talk and so does Erika. Erika has costumes for it and everything, and is a dirty talk expert. She knows just what to say to Rayna to get her going, and she loves to tease her, building up the anticipation for later.
Ruby Carlton: Chastity Play, where Lisa is in full control of how and when she experiences pleasure, is something Ruby gets very into. And Lisa simply adores teasing, tempting and flustering her to test her limits.
Tiffany Forrester: Tiffany's primary kink is voyeurism. She can get more than enough pleasure just watching Eileen and Rinna together. She finds she doesn’t need to be directly involved —not that she doesn’t enjoy that too— but it’s not a necessity.
Preference requests are open!

gay Panera Bread date gone wrong! (there was blood!) (and slurs!) (not clickbait!)
@svwhssftr mandatory mako coparent tag come look at your well-behaved gentleman of a son
just some Sutton Valence-adjacent shenanigans for tonight after a long golf practice. it’s hard to explain but in the original Sutton Valence, characters who had children that were also major characters (like Gregory and Adam) were not seen as parents and children. like it was acknowledged that Gregory was technically his father, but it wasn’t the same person. bc that Gregory was not the same age. if that makes any sense. just keep that in mind
anyway! they’re so Ricky Montgomery coded I love them DEARRRLY i fear I have fangstitch brainrot. in my delulu hopeless romantic era. I also fear that it’s not a Sutton Valence excerpt without something oddly serious covered.

“Crow, do you have any formal clothes?” Mako anxiously slid the hangers of his cramped wardrobe as he brushed through his collection of nicer clothing.
“Nothing that would fit you.” Crow crossed his legs as he mashed the buttons of his Switch. “Where are you two going, anyway?”
“Panera.”
“Panera?” Crow repeated as he paused his play-through of Deltarune to stare at Mako, mouth agape. “You’re asking me for formal clothes for a date at Panera?”
“I don’t have anything!” Mako exclaimed. “I mean, he’s a big fashion guy. What if I wear something entirely inappropriate?”
“I can guarantee you that formal attire at Panera Bread would be entirely inappropriate,” Crow said.
“What do you think I should wear, then?” Mako sighed.
“I don’t know, man. I’m a fan of the collared shirt and sweatshirt combo, personally. It never misses.”
“Collared shirt,” Mako repeated, standing on the tip of his toes as he swung the metal tops of his hangers. “Nice sweatshirt.”
Meanwhile, Gale adjusted the button of his shirt as he puffed out his hair in his bathroom mirror. It was a simple ensemble. Mako liked simple, right? Did it really matter, in the long run? He already agreed to their date.
“Kai, you’ve been going out with Noeul for a while, right?” Gale asked, propping open the bathroom door with his foot.
“Something like that.” Kai dramatically stretched himself over his bed. “Why do you ask?”
“How often do you go on dates?” Gale asked.
“Never,” Kai responded. “Why would we do that gay shit?”
Gale cocked his head. “Because you want to further your relationship and understanding of each other?”
“I think we understand each other perfectly fine.”
“I guess we’re just different.” Gale habitually picked at his cuticles, chipping his bronze nail polish.
“Thank God,” Kai sneered, staring at the popcorn ceiling.
“Can I borrow your blue sweatshirt?” Gale asked. “I’ll be careful with it.”
“It’s going to swallow you whole, but sure,” Kai said. “Just don’t get, like, cum or shit on it.”
“Huh?” Gale said, his head craning around the door.
“You heard me, Porter. Just don’t get freaky with your boy toy on my vintage Alexander McQueen, and we’ll be fine.”
“That’s vintage McQueen?” Gale asked, his eyes widening. “And you never told me?”
“It never came up.” Kai shrugged.
“I might have to borrow it more often,” Gale said under his breath.
“Where are you going, anyway?” Kai asked.
“The little Panera down the street.”
“Panera?” Kai laughed. “God, you are a faggot.”
“It’s cozy! They have good soups!”
“You are a pansy,” Kai cackled.
“You’ve shagged significantly more men than I have, Shirogane.” Gale narrowed his eyes as he tucked Kai’s sweatshirt into his khaki pants.
“Shagged?” Kai said. “What, am I some kind of rug?”
Gale rolled his eyes. “You should be more familiar with British slang by now.”
“And you should be more familiar with some dick by now.”
“I’m not interested in his… manly bits… right now-“
“What the fuck?” Kai cried.
“What?”
“Why do you talk like that all the time?” Kai asked. “‘His manly bits.’ This has to be a joke.”
“Welcome to Britain, Kai! Sorry, we have dignity and a healthy relationship with sex.”
“You clearly don’t have a healthy relationship with sex.”
“I don’t have a boyfriend who sleeps with Sonnet Chea behind my back.”
Kai blinked. “That’s not true, Gale.”
“It most certainly is true!”
“I know Noeul fucks Sonnet. I just don’t care.”
“Oh.” Gale’s voice cracked.
“I’m just saying, you should loosen up a little,” Kai said. “Learn to take a joke, man.”
“Your jokes aren’t very funny,” Gale said, grabbing his bag and wallet from a hook on their door.
“They get me good dick,” Kai said. “What do your nonexistent jokes get you, Gale?”
“A boyfriend who actually gives two shits about me.” Gale stiffly smiled as he closed the door and headed down the hall to meet Mako.
As Gale traversed the halls, Mako’s eyes were locked on his bedside alarm clock.
“Does it look okay?” he asked, his voice wavering. “I think it looks okay.”
“You look great, dude.” Crow awkwardly patted Mako’s back. “I think the blue sweatshirt and khaki pants complement each other.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“I’m nervous.” Mako fidgeted with the shark keychain dangling from his wallet. “I’ve never been on a date before. I think he really likes me, and I don’t want to fuck up-“
“If someone somehow doesn’t like you, then they’re the problem,” Crow said, instinctively adjusting the chain of Mako’s paperclip necklace. “Gale seems like a good guy. Just have fun.”
“Do my teeth look weird?”
“As fucked-up as always.” Crow smiled.
“Perfect.” Mako confidently grinned as he swung open the door of his dorm room. His face dropped as he saw Gale across the hall. Gale waved at him, and Mako slammed the door.
“Crow, what do I do?” Mako exclaimed.
“What’s wrong?” Crow had just returned to his game, so he was moderately annoyed.
“We’re wearing the same exact outfit.”
“You’re what?”
“I saw him down the hall. It’s the exact same. Blue sweatshirt, collared shirt, khakis.”
Crow burst out laughing. “Are you serious?”
“This isn’t funny, Crow!”
“You’re right, this is hilarious. Open the door, let me get a picture of you two.”
“Absolutely not-“
Gale managed to knock on the door twice before Crow aggressively opened it, slamming it directly into Gale’s nose.
“Ah!” Gale shortly screamed, curling over to shield his nose with his hands.
“Oh, fuck,” Crow whispered. “Gale, I’m so sorry, man-“
“No, I’m okay!” Gale nasally confirmed. “It’s not that bad, I promise.”
Gale removed his hands to reveal a stream of blood pouring from his right nostril.
“Oh my god, are you okay?” Mako gasped.  “I’m so sorry, Crow’s such an asshole.”
“Hey!” Crow snapped.
“No, I’m fine!” Gale laughed. “This happens sometimes. Nosebleeds, I mean. Do you have any tissues?”
“I got some from Crow’s desk. Here.” Mako shoved a wad of tissues into Gale’s face.
“Wait, are we wearing the same outfit?” Gale murmured through a glob of bloody tissues.
“Yeah, I think we are,” Mako laughed, his face bright red.
“Smile!” Crow perched atop his bed with a digital camera and excitedly waved at the couple. He did not wait for them to smile. Instead, he caught a candid shot of Gale wiping blood from above his lip and Mako looking incredibly pissed at him.
“I think I’m okay,” Gale confirmed, tilting his head down and admiring himself in Mako’s mirror. Blood no longer stained his upper lip.
Crow threw a black hoodie at Mako. “This is the hoodie we agreed to get at the Ricky Montgomery show. I’ve hoarded it for long enough. You can finally wear it.”
“Is it clean?” Mako asked.
“Dubiously.”
Mako shrugged. “It should be fine.”
Crow couldn’t help but notice Gale staring off at his quilted throw as Mako got changed. It was nice to witness some form of respect as opposed to the raging horniness he was accustomed to seeing.
“I should be ready to go,” Mako said, taking Gale’s hand. A warm flush crept across Gale’s cheeks.
“Oh, yeah. Yeah, I’m ready, too,” Gale said.  Mako reached to open their door.
“Y’all be safe,” Crow called, doing his best impression of the Kentuckians he had grown to know and love.
“Take care, now,” Mako replied in an equally horrific Southern accent.
“You’re learning!” Crow excitedly clapped.
“Never say that again,” Gale said, leaning into Mako. With that, the duo embarked on their romantic first date at the local Panera Bread.

In 2014, tech leader and burgeoning art collector Komal Shah's "eyes were opened to what she described as vast inequities faced by women artists in market prices, museum acquisitions and overall visibility in the art world." She has since assembled one of the most notable collections in America. "Made predominantly by generations of women working in abstraction, from the mid-20th-century artists Joan Mitchell and Lenore Tawney to the young contemporary painters Firelei Báez and Jadé Fadojutimi, the collection isn’t obviously about gender. Rather, it embodies a feminist perspective through its bold expressiveness." Read more about Ms. Shah, the collection and the superb forthcoming 432-page catalog, 'Making Their Mark: Art by Women in the Shah Garg Collection,' in this @nytimes feature by @hilariesheets via linkinbio 'Making Their Mark: Art by Women in the Shah Garg Collection' is published by @gregoryrmiller Edited with text and interview by Mark Godfrey, Katy Siegel. Text by Daniel Belasco, Glenn Adamson, David J.
