“All together against racism,” the crowd in Berlin shouts. Some held posters that said “Heart instead of hate” or “Racism is not an alternative.”
Up to 300,000 people took to the rainy streets of Berlin, Germany on Saturday as nationwide protests against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Protests were also taking place in dozens of other cities such as Freiburg, Dresden, Hannover, and Mainz, a sign of growing alarm at growing support for the AfD.
Under the slogan “We are the Firewall” — a reference to the longstanding taboo against collaborating with the far right in German politics — protesters turned the space next to the Bundestag, or national parliament, into a sea of signs, flags, and umbrellas.
“All together against racism,” the crowd in Berlin shouted. Some held posters that said “Heart instead of hate” or “Racism is not an alternative.”
The new wave of mobilization against Alternative for Germany (AfD) was ignited by a January report by investigative outlet Correctiv. It revealed that AfD members had discussed the expulsion of immigrants and “non-assimilated citizens” at a meeting with extremists.
Tumblr media
The report sent shockwaves across Germany at a time when the AfD was soaring in opinion polls, months ahead of three major regional elections in eastern Germany where their support was strongest.
“We absolutely must not allow the stories that we experienced in 1930 or even back in the 1920s to happen again ... We must do everything we can to prevent that,” said Jonas Schmidt, who came from the western port city of Bremen told the Associated Press. “That’s why I’m here.”
Kathrin Zauter, another protester, called the strong attendance “really encouraging.”
“This encourages everyone and shows that we are more — we are many,” she said.
Jakob Springfeld, the spokesman for the NGO Solidarity Network Saxony, said he was shocked that it had taken such a long time for mass demonstrations against the far-right, given the AfD had been successful in many smaller communities already. "But there's a jolt now. And the fact that the jolt is coming provides hope, I believe."
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz praised the protests, writing in a Saturday post on the social media platform X that citizens’ presence at the gatherings is “a strong sign for democracy and our constitution.”
“In small and big cities across the country, citizens are coming together to demonstrate against forgetting, against hate and incitement,” he added.

Saturday's protest was a collaboration involving more than one thousand entities, including leave none behind, Amnesty International, Echo Iran, and FridaysForFuture, initiated the call for action against right-wing extremism at the Reichstag building. Katherine Legge’s motorsports resume includes experience in Formula 3, Formula Renault, a Formula One test, Champ Car, INDYCAR, A1GP, DTM, Formula E and sports car racing. Legge was the first woman to win pole in a Zetec race in 2000. One year later she won BRDC’s “Rising Star” award.
In November 2005 she became the first woman to test a Formula One car since Sarah Fisher in 2002. Legge competed in the Toyota Atlantic Championship in 2005, winning the series opener in Long Beach in her first career start to become the first woman to win a developmental open wheel race in North America. She finished the 2005 Atlantic season third in the championship with three wins and five podiums. She moved up to PKV Racing in Champ Car in 2006 and became the first woman to lead a lap in that series when she led Lap 12 at Milwaukee and went on to earn an Indy car career best finish there of sixth. She later had a massive crash at Road America but was largely uninjured and able to compete in the final two races of the season. She competed for Dale Coyne Racing in 2007 and matched her best series finish of sixth at Long Beach and earned her best Indy car start of eighth, twice, before returning to Europe to compete in the DTM touring car series from 2008-2010 where she was an Audi factory driver. After a one-year hiatus from racing, she joined Dragon Racing’s INDYCAR SERIES team in 2012 but a short-lived Lotus program led to the team only being able to secure one Chevrolet engine for two drivers and Legge only competed on oval tracks.
She moved to the Delta Wing sports car program from 2013-2015 and also competed in two Formula E races with Amlin Aguri in the 2014/2015 season. She spent three seasons with Meyer Shank Racing from 2017-2019 in a factory-backed Acura GTD program and earned four wins and 11 podium finishes – including the first win worldwide for NSX in Detroit in 2017. In 2020, she competed in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in a Lamborghini in the GTD class before switching her focus to a European-based racing program. She signed with Richard Mille Racing to take part in the 2020 European Le Mans Series and 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 prototype category but was injured in a pre-season testing crash after a tire failure at the Paul Ricard circuit and missed the remainder of the season while recovering from her injuries. In 2021-2022, she returned to IMSA as lead driver for Team Hardpoint, driving a Porsche 911 in the GTD class and currently competes in an Acura NSX in the GTD class for Gradient Racing in 2023. She and her co-drivers recently finished fourth in class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
In her free time, Katherine is a Girl Scouts STEM Ambassador and enjoys skiing, cycling, training and competing in triathlons, yoga and is a vegan athlete. Legge is the second female race car driver to compete for RLL. Danica Patrick competed in the Atlantic Series with the team from 2003-2004 and in the IndyCar Series from 2005-2006.

Junger Kunstsommer Walldürn
Tumblr media

Under the title We are so many here, the artists of the association board of the Basler Kunstverein exceptionally curate this year’s Regionale at Kunsthalle Basel. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Kunsthalle Basel, more than 50 artists will be brought together in a polyphonic, colorful, and resonant presentation. The life and career of Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889-1953) is reminiscent of the common immigrant’s tale of searching for opportunities in a new country, yet it is an exceptional story within the genre. Not only did Kuniyoshi defeat many odds after emigrating from his native Japan, but he was someone who identified as an American, but could not become a U.S. citizen due to legal restrictions of the time. Also, while Kuniyoshi had an remarkable career, his work is little known today. In 1948, he was the first living artist to be given a retrospective exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Very active in various artists’ groups and organizations, Kuniyoshi became an officer of the American Artists’ Congress in 1936, eventually becoming president and serving in this role until 1944. He was also appointed the first president of Artists Equity and the president of An American Group, Inc.
In 1906, at the age of 16, Kuniyoshi left his home country, Japan in the hope of making a new life in America. In Japan, Kuniyoshi had studied at a school for weaving and learned traditional Japanese decorative arts and how to draw. While attending public high school in Los Angeles, a teacher told him that he had artistic talent. He worked a series of odd jobs from picking fruit in the field to working as a hotel bellhop while attending the Los Angeles School of Art and Design. Eventually, he moved to New York and continued his studies in art.
Kuniyoshi’s time in the U.S. coincides with the spread of anti-immigrant sentiment throughout the country, from the eugenics movement to the Immigration Act of 1924, which drastically cut the number of new immigrants allowed annually and practically banned all immigration from East Asia. In 1919, Kuniyoshi married an American woman, Kathrine Schmidt, for which her parents disowned her and did not speak to the couple for six years. His Boy Stealing Fruit (1923) may be interpreted as “an allegory of the marriage, where a sly boy sneaks a juicy peach from a distinctly “early Americana” bowl.” (E. Brown: pp. 12) His sense of fear, perhaps from anti-immigrant sentiment, may be felt in his other works such as Boy Frightened by Snake (1921-1922) and Child frightened by Water (1924).
Stay tuned for the Part II of Kuniyoshi’s life and career.
