el ghirba synagogue in djerba, tunisia. when exactly it was founded is unknown, but it may date to the 6th century bce, making it the oldest functioning synagogue in africa (and possibly in the world). it's associated with toshavi jews, the maghrebi jewish community which predated the arrival of and was eventually absorbed by expelled sephardic jews.

I've been reading Exodus lately and I've just gotten to the portions where God gives the first commands to the people via Moses (twice), and then goes on to give detailed instructions about the tabernacle and how it should be built, and I'm just... we think art is unimportant?? we think things only mean as much as their functionality?? we so easily fall into the trap of believing that beauty means nothing, that it's cheap and only worth whatever mindless distraction it brings, that it's barely more than a cheap sensual thrill, that buildings should just be practical and plain and cheap, that everything should be functional but ultimately disposable, that paintings and dresses and mugs and curtains and carpets are just pretty but have no real value, that beauty is fleeting and vain and therefore shouldn't be thought about too much, if even looked for at all... we fall into these traps so easily, and we forget that there are chapters upon chapters of painstakingly detailed plans to build one portable worship tent, and those plans have been handed down through thousands of years of human history, because beauty and art and skill in craft is important
#I have to go get ready for work now but I will come back to this#and don't even get me started on the parts about God calling specific craftsmen *by name*#he called them!! by name!!! he said 'this man is good at his job. he creates beautiful work. he will build my temple and make it beautiful'#and even more--God inspired him!!!! it was a calling of GOD for him to create beautiful carvings and tapestries and candlesticks!!!#look even if you're not jewish or christian or religious at all you have GOT to see what it means that all these incredibly detailed plans#for building this tent-temple are extremely important#because even if you don't believe in God and don't think that this is all significant bc he personally gave the instructions#and then helped preserve this record of them so we could still read them today#you do have to see how important they were to the people of that time who first wrote them down#and the extreme care that was taken to record all of those detail#AND the fact that it's been preserved for so long and we can still read all the care that was put into creating this incredible piece#of artwork and worship they made#gurt says stuff#I just. gahhfhhfj. I'm feeling emotional about chapters of the Bible that I can't even fully force myself to pay attention to#bc there's so MUCH and I'm bad at visualizing this stuff and I tend to zone out while listening to it#but the fact that it IS that much!!! that there SO MUCH DETAIL and it goes on for SO LONG that I even struggle to pay attention!!!#that this was THAT IMPORTANT to the people who wrote it and to God!!! as an artist and someone who has always cared about art#this means so much to me ok#christianity#bible verse#bible thoughts#exodus#art#theology

theres being multiethnic or from an interfaith family n then theres almost cynically fully identifying w every (usually at least somewhat marginalized) identity u can find anywhere in ur family tree lmao which i see wayyy too often. u r not "connected" to 10 different cultures. b serious.
#i was once mutuals w someone who identified as muslim jewish xtian n hindu (n i think maybe another relifion as well)#n while they only seemed to b a practicing muslim (they were a hijabi) they felt comfortable enough to speak over jews#abt judaism n antisemitism etc.#i knew they were deeply unserious abt judaism when they posted a painting they did of the shekhina#girl. this is like the BIGGEST nono#no practicing jew or even anyone raised in judaism that didnt do a full 180° into hardcore antitheism will do that#like a jew wont just draw god not as an act of rebellion against religion. a jew esp wont draw god as an act of worship

It is not a coincidence that right after kick off of the biggest watched event of the year in their largest’s ally’s country, Israel bombed Rafah. All the while you were dancing and cheering along to a bunch of openly Zionist artists who haven’t been relevant in over a decade.

So lately i've been curious on ways i can connect more with Lady Lilith in worship & involving her into my everyday life. I see that you're a Lilithian, so i'm just curious on how you do these things!
here are some tips and offerings you can give to her , but first a tw : slight mentions of abuse , kidnapping , child murder , food , wine , sex , a painting involving nudity , and religious trauma . btw , the underlined part is a link !
1. you can start by reading about Lilith in judaism , although her origins go back to ancient Mesopotamia . deities and other guardians love when we read about their myths as long as we understand that they are not their myths ( like in Greek mythology ) since the myths were written by humans who mostly feared the deities . however , you can always choose to believe anything from the myths . personally , i believe that there is some truth in every myth , and i believe Lilith was not allowed to be in the Garden of Eden after she refused to submit to Adam because she wanted to be equal to him
2. unlearn the bad things you might have been taught about Lilith . she is thought to be evil and many people think that she likes to kidnap and murder babies , but that is not the case , in fact , she is very motherly and she can help women who are in abusive relationships . i can confirm this for you , as she made sure my angel babies are safe and she is keeping abusive people away from my life for as long as possible
3. offerings : chocolate or dark chocolate ( you can eat it in her honor , i promise it’s not disrespectful ) , choosing yourself and stepping into your power , roses , the colors red and black , dark crystals ( such as obsidian , red jasper and / or ruby ) , apples , snake imagery , cinnamon , wine ( especially red dark wine but if you are not fond of that , you don’t have to give her a wine offering ) , figures of her for your altar ( if you cannot afford an altar , that’s okay , just remember that you are a living altar ) , self care / self love , sex magic ( same as the wine situation , if you are not comfortable with sex magic you obviously do not have to do that ) , shadow work , which is looking at the parts of yourself ( mind , emotions , behavior , etc ) that you avoid the most / are most ashamed of . while doing shadow work , you give those parts of you a space to speak . it’s going to be painful sometimes because you will be noting down the parts of yourself that you tend to hide from the others , but remember Lilith will not force you to do shadow work if you don’t want to or if you need to stop it . you can vent and / or rant to her instead . also , a couple of personal offerings i gave to her are on my discord bio i added the black moon Lilith sign ( ⚸ ) , which i think is more connected to astrology but she still appreciates it , the another offering is my pfp on my main tiktok being a painting of her by Dante Gabriel Rossetti :
4. Lilith is understanding , and she will give you space if you need time from your practice due to mental health reasons . if you struggle with religious trauma , she will reassure you that you don’t need to ask for her forgiveness . even if you don’t feel her presence , even if you don’t see her , she will be there for you . you can ask her for signs , and she will eventually deliver them ; for me , she makes sure to land readings with messages from her through tiktok on my fyp . the way she sends signs might be different for you , but she is not subtle when she wants to give you a message . she will also be honest and she will tell you the truth . you can talk to her about everyday things in your life to connect with her , and if you need , you can ask her for reassuring cuddles
i hope these helped ! ♥︎

a jew is a jew at the end of the day truly ,, for when an antisemitic asshole walks into a building full of jews they will not care who’s the most jewish jew — they will attack us all equally but it’s also okay to feel disgruntled by jews who have separated themselves from their judiasm both religiously & culturally so much that they might as well be as informed as the average goyim on jewish subjects deciding to speak over jews who are 100% culturally and religiously jewish in every aspect .
#i hope y’all understand what i mean by this and don’t take it outta context#i love all jews equally but#if i see one more fucking whitewashed antizionist borderline pagan idol worshipping jew#decide their somehow the most jewish jew to speak on jewish issues#despite the fact they are the farthest thing away from being jewish#i’m gonna tweek#jewposting#jumblr#jewish stuff#jewish tumblr#jewish#jewish culture#judaism#jew#jewblr

nova moment i won’t get to for ages but wanna talk about bc it’s really fucking funny- when amy has her bat mizvah she obviously like. invites her friends. and nova is her best friend and bc of this she’s obviously also invited. and she just spends the entire time in awe bc she's got a special interest in religious text while also having never had any knowledge of actual religious practices. after during celebrations she's just BEGGING amy to know how she can come back to the synagogue bc she had the best night of her life that didn't involve murder she's utterly awestruck. like she legitimately Did Not Know religion was like this and she’s stoked. like down to convert on the spot stoked. (amy encourages her to do more research first bc obviously nova doesn’t have the informed ability to make that choice when she barely knows anything about religion except the scripture isolated from any context but she does take nova to synagogue when she’s in station square)
#please inform me if i said anything incorrect I’m not jewish myself#Obviously I’m doing research into it for this but if I’ve missed something or got it wrong just message me#but yeah. i think nova seeing exactly one (1) religious thing and immediately demanding to convert is very funny#she's genuinely in awe she's fully respecting everything to her best knowledge btw she just thinks judaism is that cool#as she grows up she doesn’t really prescribe to any one religious belief system but visits any place of worship that’ll allow her#she believes that they’re real. to clarify. she has no reason not to she’s seen gods with her own optic sensors.#so she’s super respectful the whole time she’s just also not following their beliefs in how to like. live your life.

it's such a shame that King Lear takes place in pre-christian england because that means they haven't got the bible yet, so Edmund can't compare himself and Edgar to the story of Jacob and Esau in one of his cunty monologues
#mine#he would get SUCH mileage out of it too i just Know it#king lear#shakespear#shakespeare#not that there's technically anything STOPPING me from making them all jewish except like.#the fact that judaism hadn't become diasporic or really extended beyond west asia at that point much less reached britain#however neither the fuck had worship of the roman gods at That point so. maybe if shakespeare can do it then so can i

etz hayyim (“tree of life”) synagogue in chania, crete, greece. the building dates to the 14th-15th centuries, and was originally a venetian catholic church. it was acquired by chania's jewish community and converted into a synagogue in the late 17th century. chania's jews were deported due to the holocaust in 1944, after which the building remained abandoned until restoration in the 1990s.
romaniote jews are the oldest jewish community in europe and one of the oldest in the world, thought to have lived in and around present day greece since before 70 ce. they have their own liturgy that is unrelated to the more commonly used european ones (ashkenazic and sephardic).
#greece#architecture#interior#worship#jewish#romaniote#old & new#my posts#for all u Westerners 'rom' = constantinople referring to itself as the roman empire#so rome/italy is like 'west roman' constantinople/greece/anatolia is like 'east roman'#in the west its called 'byzantine' from 'byzantium' (proto-constantinople)#also it insinuates w roman empire was the 'real' roman empire (despite east lasting 1000 years longer)#in most mediterranean & w asian languages greece/greek is 'yunan/yawan/yavan' (from ionians) or 'rum/rom' (from roman)#in actual greek it's 'hellas'/'ellas' (from hellenic)#in georgian it's 'saberdzneti' for some reason but they also have their own names for a bunch of places#'greece' comes from the latin name 'graecia'#in a lot of slavic languages it's some variation of 'greece'. weird considering most were never/hardly under latin influence#if you think this is a lot just wait until u hear about the all the names for armenia#but yeah these guys were also in a lot of the balkans. if you're from the balkans and jewish you MAY have romaniote ancestry#(at least more recent romaniote ancestry than all other european jews)#not a guarantee though especially if you're ashkenazi#theres like. other jewish groups in europe that predated ashkenazi migration#most of them just got absorbed into the ashkenazi population

The funny thing is that I do characterize pre shatterstar Jace as basically a fantasy atheist but I do think worship of Cassandra would fix him
#shut up Janelle#I have a Jewish friend who jokingly said like#oh I think Judaism would fix him abt characters they like & think could actually benefit from it#which is something I’m kinda stealing sorry friend but I do feel similarly abt Cassandra n Jace#(thank you and sorry for thievery lilah. it’s a funny joke but it’s also true)#I do see parallels tbh#in that like. galicaea’s worship tried to decimate Cassandra’s power n also the acceptance of like. doubt w/in that faith#like being able to debate and accept you might not understand everything is v important from what i know. as someone on the outside!!!!

Hey man, I saw your comment about getting tattoos *after* you convert and I wanted to give you a few thoughts.
(Please note: this is not meant to be mean or dismissive, just... an additional perspective)
The Idea that HaShem would be ok with something that is forbidden because it is done out of love for HaShem is flawed.
It kind of is an influence from the Christian view of God, wherein belief and intent is often as if not more important than action.
While HaShem would understand that you are doing it out of love, that doesn't make it not a violation of the commandment.
A practically perfect example is Samuel 1, Chap 15: Wherein Saul is commanded to destroy all of Amalek, incluiding all the animals.
He saves the best animals to Sacrifice to HaShem, HaShem is ticked off, and the prophet goes and says, "Hey, why didn't you do what you were told?" Saul goes, "I did, I killed everyone and destroyed their stuff." Samuel replies, "Then why the fuck can I hear goats?" Saul says "Well, I saved the best as a sacrifice for HaShem. Obviously G-d will be ok with it." Samuel replies: "Yeah, no. Is a sacrifice as important as obedience to what HaShem says? no it is not."
And as a result of this Saul's line loses Kingship.
And, tbh, it is a fairly one-to-one for your situation (well, except the kingship bit, but that can be a stand in for any consequences).
If you want to get tattoos, it is far better to get them before you finish the conversion process, such that you will not be violating any laws.
This isn't meant to be preachy, though I know it comes off as such, but if you do believe in the religion, this is something you ought to consider.
Sure, and I have considered all of that. While I said I was thinking heavily about it, it's just that I think heavily about a lot of things that I often don't go through with.
#ask#jumblr#personal thoughts tag#long post#the 'if you believe in the religon' part is getting to me and it's not even about the anon#yes i believe in the religion. yes i have to convert to be jewish. but it's not (just) *about* the religion to me#and i've seen it too much to where only the religion ought to matter to converts/people in the process#if anything the first thing that drew me to judaism was am yisrael#because i can (in theory) be religious by myself. i can believe whatever i want on my own and (in theory) worship g-d alone#i was drawn to judaism by the people. i was already rather religious as-is and i don't feel the need to convert to affirm that necessarily#but that rant isn't really about anon and i've even talked about it before#i talked about it with my rabbi even. it's about am yisrael just as much as yisrael the religion/relationship with g-d
