DC Character Art Dump!
Tried to do quite a few of the character suggestions people asked for on a few different platforms. Sorry I wasn’t able to get around to all of them, but hope you enjoy these!

Saying all this as a long time fan of Jason Todd
Think the big issue with Jason Todd is that he exists in this weird area where there's multiple characters that have a stronger gimmick than him.
Damian is more endearing about the chip on his shoulder. Helena B. generally does the former killer vigilante trying to earn Bruce's respect better, and Jean looks better in red. Roy also does the former burnout thing better.
Not sure if i think jason should be antagonistic but I do think it's a fundamental issue that Jason runs into being somewhat redundant narratively and not being endearing enough to make it work longer term.
The time for a redemption story has more or less past after so many years
Jason is fundamentally without a niche that someone in his corner of the dcu doesn't do better.
Idk. No one knows what to do with him and all the ideas I've heard for longer form stories don't really impress me or make me think someone else shouldn't be the main character of that story.
Magical assassin stories make more sense for Jean or Damian
Angry outcast of the bats goes to Helena
Former burnout turned leader goes to Roy.
Jason doesn't have a specific thing he should be doing that wouldn't be better used on someone else. I think maybe he shouldn't necessarily be retired but maybe retired as an mc and make him a team member for a bit

co-writer request!
hi! i’m wil, aka mae-kent tumblr & matrixsupergirl instagram. i’m very autistic about my fave and would love to write more fics for her- however i find it hard to write other characters interacting with her due to my focus being sort of wholly on her knowledge wise. if anyone is familiar with the below characters and would enjoy co-writing a fic about them & mae with me, please comment! i’m not too awful worried about strict characterisation or super high writing quality— I just want someone to bounce off of and write with who’s passionate about the character!
characters: bart allen, kon-el, jean-paul valley/azrael, kyle rayner, linda danvers, donna troy, clark kent, guy gardner, roy harper, barbara gordon, stephanie brown, cass cain, etc — feel free to ask if you have a fave you’d like to write interacting with mae !

11/6/24.
The other day we posted about a CD release from Christchurch, New Zealand band Springloader. The CD is released by longtime label Failsafe Records, also based in Christchurch.
I was further perusing the label's offerings the other day and I came upon this stunning compilation from 1986. This is the 2 CD compilation version. The theme of the CD is bands that went through Christchurch between 1984 and 1986.
This focus led to one of the most stunning compilations I've run across. This is a mix of the known and unknown from the fertile New Zealand scene in the 1980s. You'll find some of the finest Flying Nun bands, but much more. So yes, The Chills, Sneaky Feelings, The Bats, Bird Nest Roys, and The Jean-Paul Sarte Experience are here. But so are The Triffids and This Sporting Life.
Failsafe has another winner compilation, "South Compilation" that also has Flying Nun representation, but less so. And, also check out "Accident Compilation" for a compilation of Christchurch only bands from the early 1980s.

You say you’re a Jason fan but it sounds like you don’t like him. Like you don’t have to hedge it you can say you don’t hate him but find him boring or whatever idk. Also yeah people think of the overworked exhaustion Re: burnout now but it used to mean fried from dug use- Jason never did drugs? and he never been shown to be burnt out from work- also Roy is arrowfam? I just don’t think this post is saying anything real cause it’s predicated on assumptions that don’t mean anything and don’t make any sense
So burn out means many things. I was using it in the broad sense of "directionless and exhausted", more or less, for both. Altho the older definition definitely does fit Roy better (tho I wouldn't use that version on Roy because it's overall kind of dehumanizing to people with addictions)
That aside, I've been reasonably caught up on Jason's books for the better part of the last 10 years and after reading older bat books it's hard not to see aspects of his character niche taken from sources that did it better
Roy is the black sheep turned leader of heroes
Azrael is the mystic assassin
Damian is the robin assassin with a chip on his shoulder
And Helena is the bat that butts heads over lethal force.
Jason is in the middle of all of these and, as a result, anyone with an understanding of older books will see that a lot of what makes "modern Jason" into "modern Jason"is taking bits and pieces of more established characters
I'd like Jason to succeed. I'm just able to critique how much of who he is today as him ultimately having canibalized from other, more established heroes.

Genesis
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2024
Genesis (2018, Canada)
Director & Writer: Philippe Lesage
Mini-review:
Man, I don't really know what to say about this movie. It starts off quite well, as a pretty sensitive and intimate representation of late adolescence and early adulthood. But then it goes completely off the rails during the final 40 minutes or so. For starters, it suddenly hits you with a couple of disturbing twists that don't even fit with the tone. And after that, it drops the initial story entirely and focuses on a bunch of new characters for the last 20 minutes. I'm sure it's supposed to mean something, but I didn't get it at all. That being said, Noée Abita and Théodore Pellerin turn in two beautiful, nuanced performances. All in all, Genesis ended up being rather disappointing.

Corollary to the important Dracula movies post, here's a more general recommended and/or representative vampire movie curriculum; there's some overlap between the two lists, of course.
This list does include my personal favorite vampire movies and sometimes it's skewed a little to my taste rather than to what's most important in the genre, but I also think it's 25 movies that would make a pretty interesting education in vampire film.
1922-1964 (fundamental, genre-defining)
Nosferatu (dir. F.W. Murnau, 1922)
Dracula (dir. Tod Browning, 1931)
Vampyr (dir. Carl Th. Dreyer, 1932)
Dracula's Daughter (dir. Lambert Hillyer, 1936)
Dracula/Horror of Dracula (dir. Terrence Fisher, 1958)
The Last Man on Earth (dir. Sidney Salkow, 1964)
1970-1982 (experimentation in multiple directions)
The Nude Vampire (dir. Jean Rollin, 1970)
The Vampire Lovers (dir. Roy Ward Baker, 1970)
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (dir. Jaromil Jires, 1970)
Daughters of Darkness (dir. Harry Kumel, 1971)
The Velvet Vampire (dir. Stephanie Rothman, 1971)
Dracula A.D. 1972 (dir. Alan Gibson, 1972)
Ganja & Hess (dir. Bill Gunn, 1973)
Blood for Dracula (dir. Paul Morissey, 1974)
Dracula (dir. John Badham, 1979)
Nosferatu (dir. Werner Herzog, 1979)
Fascination (dir. Jean Rollin, 1979)
The Living Dead Girl (dir. Jean Rollin, 1982)
1983-present (the contemporary vampire film, of various types)
The Hunger (dir. Tony Scott, 1983)
Near Dark (dir. Kathryn Bigelow, 1987)
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (dir. Francis Ford Coppola, 1992)
Interview with the Vampire (dir. Neil Jordan, 1994)
Shadow of the Vampire (dir. E. Elias Merhige, 2000)
Let the Right One In (dir. Thomas Alfredson, 2008)
Thirst (dir. Park Chan-Wook, 2009)
Byzantium (dir. Neil Jordan, 2012)
