🇵🇸 Amidst the rubble of his destroyed home, Ashraf Nafedth burns a book he once treasured—a guide to international law. He now sees it as a lie, failing to protect people like him. The unfair treatment of countries like Palestine by powerful nations like the US shatters his trust in these laws. His burning of the book symbolizes his loss of faith in international law's ability to keep him safe and reflects the struggles of many in similar situations.

"PINCUS BRECHER SENT UP FOR TRIAL," Montreal Star. July 18, 1934. Page 3 & 11. --- Charged With Distribution of Drugs and Bribing Customs Officers ---- Pincus Brecher, of New York City, was this morning committed for trial at the September term of the Court of King's Bench, by Judge F. X. Lacoursiere, in the Arraignment Court, on charges of importation, transportation, possession and distribution of drugs and a charge of bribing customs officers. These charges are identical with those on which Harry Davis, 31, Rumanian-born Montrealer was sentenced to 14 years in the penitentiary and 10 lashes, in addition to payment of a fine, by Chief Justice R. A. E. Greenshields, on October 30, 1933.
Brecher, who arrived from New York this morning, reached the new court house a few minutes after 12.15 p.m., escorted by Corporal Raymond and Constable Clifford, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The officers were in plain clothes and it is doubtful if the few deter- mined curiosity-seekers noticed the little party, when it finally arrived. Among those who remained in the hallway, after the noon-hour adjournment of the courts, was Charles Feigenbaum, the Crown's star witness of the Davis trial.
GREETED BY WIFE The accused who is 57 years of age, looked every day of it as he shambled into court and took his place at the bar. He was warmly greeted by his wife, who rushed up to kiss him when he came through the door. She was accompanied by Montreal and New York friends, and obtained permission for a short interview with her husband in the cell-flat, after the proceedings were over.
Brecher holds the reputation of being "a New York millionaire". Be that as it may, he certainly did not look the part this morning, for he was dresse in a shabby, shiny blue-serge suit, with a dirty white collar and red paisley-design tie, a pair of unshined shoes and a grey felt hat long past its first youth.
UNDER STRAIN He was unshaven and his curly white hair stood up in kinks on his head, as he gazed on the officials and others present through a pair of limpid brown eyes, which showed obvious signs of the strain under which he was laboring, as did every feature and movement of his body. He attempted to sit down while the charges were being read, but was restrained by a court attendant.
Following a recital of the law's complaints against him in 1930, Lucien Gendron, K.C., entered formal appearance for the defence, while Ernest Bertrand, K.C., Crown Prosecutor, informed the Court that the Attorney-General had issued a preferred indictment against Brecher, to send him direct to the next term of the Court of King's Bench, without preliminary inquiry.
Mr. Gendron explained that this was the reason why, while no bail was applied for at present, the defence would communicate with the Crown in due course its decision and wishes in that matter. It is under- stood that an application may be made tomorrow before a judge of the Superior Court.
Brecher snatched a few hasty words with his wife and friends, before leaving the court room and was urged to "brace up." He looked a sick and worried man as he walked along the corridor towards the prisoners' department. He left the court house, shortly after, for Montreal Jail, in the usual prison motor van.

French border zone to be expanded ready for new checks
The French border control area at the port of Dover will be extended to reduce the risk of queues at peak times when new EU rules come into force in November, BBC reports.
Under the new EU entry/exit system (EES), travellers entering from the UK and other non-EU countries will have to register their details at the EU border and provide biometric data.
Home Affairs Minister Seema Malhotra will introduce legislation in Parliament on Monday to authorise French border guards to work in the extended Dover port area. It will commit the Home Office to working with the French government, local authorities and businesses to streamline EU border controls at the port.
The change in legislation is part of preparations to minimise the risk of disruption to traffic and create more space for passenger processing.
The port plans to change the location of passport control for passengers arriving to board ferries from Dover’s eastern docks to a new border control area at the western docks. The port is also undertaking a major modernisation of its harbour infrastructure, including the construction of dedicated inspection facilities.
It will have 24 kiosks for intercity bus passengers to be screened, as well as agent and tablet-based passenger check-in in vehicles.
Ms. Malhotra said the checks would be a “major change” at the EU border, so the public should be prepared for queues at peak times when they are first introduced. She said Home Office ministers were working to minimise the risk of excessive queues as much as possible.

I am building so many hcs for Moon in my mind I love her so much enough so to think abt ancient politics girlie better consider herself lucky (I say, as if fictional politics becoming to long dead societies isn't my favorite shit to explore)
#rat rambles#rain posting#anyways I like the idea that moon was first built during a time when the original nation that lived in the area had been split into two#she was built near one of the borders in a location that many of the organizations that had been carrying out iterator constructions at the#time had been eyeing for a while but avoiding because of the high tensions between the two nations and how itd be hard to not use resources#from across the border from either side to keep her operational#eventually though one of them was given the thumbs up and started construction leading to a lot of conflict#for a long time it was mostly just diplomatic arguments through messages and meetings but eventually as moon neared completion the topic#of which nation she should be considered to belong to became a major point of contension and there was a minor war over it#eventually the nation that had initially backed her construction gave up due to some natural distaters#so by the time moon was activated she was considered an iterator of the other nation and as such she had quite a bit of adapting to do as#while she had both of the primary languages of the nations in her database pretty much all of her database and internal functions were#written by and with the laguage of the initial nation that backed her construction#eventually this stopped mattering as the two nations ended up merging and the newly founded government remerged the two languages#I say remerged as they were initially different branches of the primary laguage of the initial nation that had falled apart#although moon found it nice to be able to use many of the words she wasnt allowed to use before it was annoying to have to once again#adjust to speaking a different language primarily#although she definitely did find it funny watching the others struggle to use the new language organically as she had a head start in#understanding how a lot of the 'new' stuff was actually used in practical conversation as opposed to straight translation#many iterators that were around during the two nation era will still usually exclusively think in their local language and occasionally#speak in it fully in more casual settings if they get that luxury#now ofc language evolves over time so all iterators have had to adjust how they speak but generally speaking they still are most#comfortable with their original language as its what they were built to speak

Central Bank Initiative Accelerates Cross-Border Payments
Tumblr media
A groundbreaking initiative led by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and several central banks is set to revolutionise cross-border payments. Announced on July 1, the completion of phase three of ‘Project Nexus’ marks a significant milestone, introducing a comprehensive blueprint to streamline the connection of domestic instant payment systems (IPS). The project’s goal is to standardise the way IPS connects globally, allowing seamless and rapid cross-border transactions.
The innovative approach eliminates the need for IPS operators to build custom connections for each new country. Instead, a single connection to Nexus would enable an IPS to interact with all other countries in the network. This advancement promises to simplify and expedite international payments, making them faster and more cost-effective.

Brett Wilkins: New ICC Complaint Over Journalists Killed by Israel in Gaza
Reporters Without Borders says it has “reasonable grounds for thinking that some of these journalists were deliberately killed and that the others were the victims of deliberate IDF attacks against civilians.” Palestinian journalists stage a protest to draw attention to Palestinian press killed while covering the war in the Gaza Strip on February 26, 2024 in Rafah.  (Photo: Ahmad…
