Hey there lovelies! I know the Hurricane hit FL yesterday and I'm really hoping all of you are okay. Please be sure to reach out to your crew if you need something ,ya? As a heads up, I'm gonna get into some real talk tonight, so please bear with me. I have heard some stuff lately about how not everyone is redeemable, and not everyone deserves a second chance, and I thought this would be a good time to mention some things that have been on my mind about said subject. Every single one of us is human. Good people make mistakes, good people do things out of good intentions that go badly, seemingly bad people do good things occasionally, and people who generally seem neutral can fuck up. This world is not black and white, and I know our trauma has taught us over and over and over that it is. The world is a big grey goopy lump of clay and every single situation, no matter how similar, is different from the one before. Don't get me wrong-- I'm not saying, don't have boundaries. I'm absolutely not saying "forgive" someone who has done some horrible shit to you or has hurt you over and over. What I'm saying is-- every single person has a unique experience that causes them to make decisions based off of knowledge limited by their experience, or the experiences of the people they know. Now why is that important? That means people can change with new information, or when treated differently. I'm gonna use our show as an example-- did the Queen Anne and Revenge crew think pirating was their only option? Yes. (Was that true? Yes, for them because of class, race issues, etc but that's a talk for another time). They believed there was only one way to do things, and no other options were out there because there were never other options presented to them. Stede offered a different perspective. Now there's A MILLION caveats and complex situations, and things, but my point is-- "irredeemable people" out there sometimes don't know any different, and if one group continues to try to explain one thing to them, and it doesn't get through-- that doesn't necessarily mean they are choosing not to change their mind. It might mean that the perspective isn't clicking for them. Another person, maybe with similar trauma, maybe with different life experiences so drastically different can explain something in a way that opens the eyes of someone that others haven't been able to. The point I'm trying to make here is--- YOU are not irredeemable. YOU are worthy of forgiveness for mistakes you've made. YOU are not the same person you were 10 years ago, or a month ago, or yesterday. Your neighbors, your friends, your family, your moots, your acquaintances on the internet, no one is the same as they were yesterday. Some people may never be in a place where they can forgive you for something-- but THAT DOESNT MEAN YOU are irredeemable or unforgivable. People clash, and we don't have to be loved and forgiven by everyone to be valid. We can choose to do better, and even if that doing better never reaches the person/event who triggered the change, that doesn't make YOU any less of a better person. That doesn't mean YOU didn't improve. It means they can't forgive you for their own reasons-- and your happiness and worth shouldn't be based on that. You are so much more than your past actions lovelies. Please remember that. Please remember that tomorrow is not written in stone. You are wonderful, and you are trying your best and that's all anyone can ask of you. Please remember that we love you crew. We care about you-- and we all do things we don't mean to. It doesn't make us unloveable, it makes us human.

Periodic Rookie Groups Report No. 24

Periodic Rookie Group Reports are a series of biannual reports that seek to put a number to how many rookie groups debut and make comebacks in a given year. For Report No. 24, I covered the activity of ‘23 rookie groups in the second half of 2024 and the total number of rookie groups that debuted in 2024.

2023 Rookies Of the 95 groups that debuted in 2023, 23 groups—six boy groups, 15 girl groups, one co-ed group, and one queer group—disbanded in 2024. Twelve of those groups debuted as part of Rainbow E&M’s idol incubator project Future Idol Asia, which explains why the project’s end has particularly affected girl group numbers. Of the 47 groups the project debuted during its run, 42 were girl groups.

I covered six of these groups that disbanded in the previous Rookie Report. The remaining 17 groups are covered below:

Eite: EVA Korea announced in an August 18, 2024 X post that the girl group (November '23) members had terminated their contracts and planned to pursue individual activities.

LIMELIGHT: The girl group (February '23) disbanded after the three members re-debuted as part of the girl group MADEIN in September 2024.

Qi.X: The queer group (March '23) announced in a September Instagram post that they would disband following the release of their farewell single "Dear".

UpToYou: Formed through AfreecaTV (now, known as SOOP) survival show U2U: Up To You 2, the girl group (January ’23/August '23) disbanded following the release of their single, "Crush On You".

ONEST: Formed by students from the K-pop Department at Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts, the girl group (January '23) disbanded following the members' graduation from the college in February 2023.

APACE, Ascension, Blossom, Cherish, Clair, Closer, Delight, Lucid, Peony, Redplum, Stay, and Winsome: A label letting their website's registration lapse is not in itself proof that they are defunct, but in the case of Rainbow E&M, who used their website to recruit participants for the Future Idol project, its disappearance does not bode well. This is especially true when coupled with the fact that Rainbow E&M abruptly stopped debuting new groups under the Future Idol banner in June, following a showcase that seemed rushed and has not updated their Instagram since September. Taken together, it points to a project, and the Future Idol groups, that have run their course.

Factoring in these 23 groups brings the number of groups that debuted in 2023 and were still active in 2024 to 72 groups: 31 girl groups, and three co-ed groups. Of these 72 groups, 65%, or 47 groups released new music at least once this year, with 53%, or 38 groups making their first release between January and June and 12%, or nine groups doing so between July and December. 39% or 28 groups released music in the first and second half of the year.

For reference, 52% of groups that debuted in 2022 made a comeback the following year, while 72% of groups that debuted in 2021 made a comeback in 2022.

2024 Rookies In 2024, 84 groups—31 boy groups, 48 girl groups, and five co-ed groups—debuted, a 12% decrease compared to last year’s total. Both girl groups and co-ed groups saw a slight increase in new groups, with girl groups increasing by two groups and co-ed groups increasing by one group. The same cannot be said for boy groups. Although their numbers increased for the first time in three years in 2023, boy groups saw a significant decline this year, dropping by 30%. This marks the third-year boy group numbers have decreased compared to the previous year. Additionally, it is the fifth consecutive year that more girl groups have debuted than boy groups, making last year's numbers seem more like an anomaly than a sign that things were changing. It seems far more likely that at least for a while, will be one where girl groups outnumber boy groups.

That goes for the groups of ‘non-traditional’ origins I wrote about in Rookie Report No. 21 and the previous Report. They accounted for a third of all groups that debuted this year, and even with the end of the Future Idol Asia project, I anticipate I will still be talking about them in 2025.

Miscellaneous stats:

April saw the most debuts with the debut of 14 new groups: six boy groups and eight girl groups.

For the first time ever, August saw the least amount of debuts with the debut of only two new groups.

For the fifth consecutive year, more girl groups debuted than boy groups.

Episode 202: The Mayhem Murder, A Black Metal Conspiracy *IS LIVE*! Image 01: At the forefront of the Norwegian black metal scene was “Mayhem”, a band which became famous for their demonic sound and live displays of violence and gore. Pictured here: Front man “Dead” (left) and founder/guitarist “Euronymous” (right) in their signature corpse paint. Image 02: Euronymous founded Mayhem under his own label with himself as the front man. Image 03-04: In an attempt to secure himself a role in Mayhem, “Morbid” front man Dead sent a letter requesting consideration as lead singer. The handwritten letter included his blood stains and a crucified rat atop an upside down cross. Dead was said to sniff decaying animal carcasses before performances and cut himself live on stage. Image 05: In April of 1991, Dead’s corpse was discovered by Euronymous with a shotgun wound to the head. Euronymous allegedly sent photo postcards of the death scene out to other black metal bands along with pieces of Dead’s cranium to be used as amulets. Pieces of Dead’s skull can be occasionally found online for sale (pictured). Image 06: The bootleg “Dawn of the Black Hearts” Mayhem album features cover art of Dead’s corpse. Image 07: Mayhem’s new bassist, “Burzum” founder Varg Vikernes, aimed to bring attention to the black metal scene by publicly burning Christian churches in Norway. Image 08: By 1996, over 50 churches in Norway had been attacked, all publicly believed to be associated with the black metal crowd. The cover of Burzum’s “Aske” (ashes) album features the destroyed Fantoft Stave Church of Norway. Image 09: To avoid criminal association with the black metal scene, Euronymous shut down his black metal label and record shop. Varg denounced Euronymous’s decision. Image 10: In August of 1993, Varg stabbed Euronymous to death with a pocket knife and served 21 years in prison for his crime. In light of the situation and cultural implications of the 80s/90s “Satanic Panic”, public opinion of whether or not something darker lingered within the Mayhem lyrics has always been hotly debated. A big-name toxic solo who attended made a post claiming that at the event Gong Jun cried about how Rising with the Wind is being received (which makes no sense because the show is doing very well.) Others who attended have refuted this. Various tabloid accounts ran with the claims, adding also that he was bashing the show; this ended up on Weibo hotsearch.

Reportedly, Daxiong and (possibly) Ma Xin (two of Gong Jun's staff who are rather incompetent in their jobs) also wrote a long speech for him that was intended to appeal to solo fans, which he declined reading.

The End of IWAKAN Magazine

Have you ever discovered something so inspirational or fascinating only to find out that it's no longer around?

I heard about IWAKAN Magazine in November. Iwakan (違和感) is an uncomfortable feeling or sense of discomfort. The magazine's tagline is, 「IWAKANは、世の中の「当たり前」に「違和感」を問いかける雑誌です。」or "IWAKAN is a magazine that questions discomfort with what is "normal" in the world." It is part art magazine, part queer zine, part activist discourse, featuring interviews from a host of performers, drag queens, queer community activists, feminists from in and outside of Japan.

It started in October 2020, during the worst of the pandemic and published about an issue every six months including video interviews that are up on their Instagram. Looking at the contributors, there were many folks I know in the Japanese LGBTQIA+ community, many whom are personal friends, who were interviewed or made illustrations for the magazine.

There are interviews with Japanese trans men and nonbinary folks on how their relationship to masculinity has changed over time. With lesbian sex workers on how they approach love as entertainers. With kabuki performers about how they personally inhabit the masculine and feminine spheres as they switch roles. It's an incredible archive of personal stories from the Japanese community, and many are radical and awe-inspiring.

I have heard blanket statements about the LGBTQIA+ community in Japan—how it's behind the U.S. by twenty years or how the community is non-existent, and that it's hopeless. The government and laws in Japan are painfully slow to change. But it's personally frustrating for me because in the streets of Ni-chome I see people organizing, protesting, taking action and fighting. There is hope. And IWAKAN is a record of those conversations, especially during a time when people were sequestered in their homes.

On December 20th, 2023 IWAKAN posted a blank white square on their Instagram with the words, "The end - IWAKAN" and a brief message: "We know this is a sudden announcement, but IWAKAN will cease production as of the end of this year...thank you to everyone who supported us."

My heart fell into my stomach when I read that. Only a month after I discovered this publication and they were ceasing production. There will be no more IWAKAN this year, the year when Japanese government is hearing the lawsuit for same-sex marriage.

But those voices are still alive. And their website (for now) is still alive. So I wanted to share my discovery with you.

Until the end of this month (January 31st, 2024) you can buy physical copies of IWAKAN magazine on their store. Volumes 01~05 are only in Japanese, and Volume 06 is in English and Japanese.

I made an unofficial translated archive

At the end of the month when the store deactivates, I am worried that we will lose the summaries, table of contents, and photographs of the magazine as well as a critical piece of Japanese queer history.

The degradation of Site Formerly Known as Twitter and shifting TOS of social media has made me aware about how we preserve queer media, especially personal stories about sexuality and gender. Some of the images of the magazine would be flagged as "porn" by social media sites though in context they are about discussions of queer liberation in sexuality.

I decided to make a small archive of each of the IWAKAN issues with photos of them and English summaries, translated by me. I hope this can preserve a piece of history online for longer.
