In Star Trek, the Vulcan motto is "Infinite diversity in infinite combinations", and I honestly think that's one of the most beautiful sentiments ever written in fiction.

15000% disagree with some of the fandom's comments stating that the Spock x Uhura relationship in the reboot is "compulsary heterosexuality" or "forced heterosexuality". The smart and driven Black woman falling in love with the intelligent and reserved half alien guy is just another slice of the diversity pie.

Remember the IDIC, people.

I really appreciate how imperfect Babylon 5's depiction of society is.

Like, I love Star Trek. But it goes so hard on the "we fixed all the problems" utopia. Then they interact with people on various planets (or from various planets) who act as allegories for current issues.

Babylon 5, on the other hand, basically just says "what if we had the same society.... but in SPACE with ALIENS." This makes it expected that racism and sexism exist (unlike Star Trek where it still exists but it's not supposed to) and it also makes it easier to (for example) show real cultural diversity from our world, such as having characters with multiple different acknowledged and practiced religions, or having extras wearing clothing that marks them as being from a particular cultural background.

Granted, both shows are still extremely US centric in terms of what they present as "Earth's culture", but I just. Really appreciate that Babylon 5 actively makes choices to celebrate and showcase at least SOME diversity of cultures from our planet.
