Clash of the... Bands?

You hadn't intended to sneak up on the Orc War Band. You'd been minding your own business, walking through the forest (sticking to the more secluded areas to avoid the skirmishes and war going on in the distance), when your canteen ran dry. With night falling, you didn't want to look for water after dark.

You came through the brush and were shocked to see a group of four bathing in the stream. They must have been fresh from battle or a hunt, slick with sweat. A little bit of red trickled down into the water, but you couldn't see any injuries.

Most wore fur, crude leather, or even bones as armor. It was no secret that they were muscular creatures. They'd have to be to carry the massive weapons they swung around with ease in battle. Some drew back bows taller than most men, their arrowheads rumored to be elephant tusks sharpened to a point.

Of course, it was one thing to speculate, another to see it in person. Muscular arms and legs, broad shoulders and backs. They may not have had flat stomachs, but you could see their muscles underneath twitch and flex with their movements.

One was twisting bone and feathers into his hair. Another scrubbed dirt and grime, revealing an Olive green complexion. The smallest was collecting glittering baubles. (Maybe jewels?)

And the largest pulled himself onto the back, picking up an axe with a head the size of you arm. Amber eyes narrowed as they fell on you, and you froze, like a rabbit caught out in the open.

Your heart thudded against your chest like a battering ram. Rabbits could literally die of fear. Would you do the same? Before the massive hands of the orcs got to you?

His lower lips shifted around massive tusks. Gold and silver bands gleaned in the setting sun.

"If you'd been an enemy, you would have gotten the jump on us."

His accent was rough, but he spoke Common perfectly.

"I didn't mean it!" You managed to stutter out, pointing to your canteen. It shook in your hand, and if it hadn't been for the strap, you would have lost it to the current. "I'm just passing through!"

"Oh, little hound, you don't just pass by a war band."

"Oh shit is this how I die????" You thought to yourself, swallowing. Your tongue and throat seemed to stick together. The world around your blurred as tears distorted your vision.

"A warrior who can get so close deserves to be celebrated!" The large orc produced a tankard (sporting a nearby kingdoms seal on the side, but you didn't dare comment).

"We're having venison tonight, why don't you join us while we decide our next plan of action?" His smile was geniune, and sent a shiver through you. Although the shaking seemed to helped fan a growing spark of arousal inside you.

"S-sure!"

Maybe diplomacy would get you far enough to live through the night.

Hello, love your art! Sorry, random question, but do you have any au's for any of the HTTYD franchises (book series, shows, or the movies), Thank you!

I've been WAITING for somebody to ask me this, and, YES, I DO in fact have an alternate universe thingimajing for the HTTYD series, However, I stopped working on it a multiple days ago.

it's extremely critical that you see the photo of the perp walk for luigi mangione as being propaganda. i've seen so many people wave it off and instead fawn over his looks. and trust me, i know it ended up being kind of pathetic and weird - but please don't brush it off as a "modelling opportunity" for him. it's a fucking terrifying message the police are sending.

i want to make a few comparisons here, in case you're not from the US or familiar with why the perp walk thing is something to pay attention to. just to set the groundwork for why this is a purposeful, unusual, and cruel act by the nyc police - for why this is not a common occurrence and for why that matters.

the prosecution alleges the show of force is due to the charge of "terrorism." for comparison, in june 2015, tsarnaev was found guilty for the boston marathon bombing, which killed 3 people and injured hundreds. his actions are considered to be an act of domestic terrorism. i have spent the last hour looking through google for pictures of similar to mangione's perp walk - and so far, i have found zero. i also just do not personally remember a moment like that, despite living in boston at the time.

they allege that luigi is a stone-cold killer who carried out a longterm plan, making him particularly dangerous. again for comparison: in nyc, recently cory martin was found guilty of the killing of brandy odom. the murder was planned and premeditated to steal insurance money. and yet no staged perp walk. why didn't her life matter enough for a "show of force"?

but mangione gets paraded by a veritable army of police officers as if he is a rabid animal. for a single citizen who allegedly killed one other single citizen, the "largest perp walk ever" occurs.

so what is the "strong message" that the mayor and the police were trying to send here? the mayor speaks as if mangione is already convicted of terrorism. there is a very thin number of people who feel threatened by the CEO's death. none of us felt like mangione needs to be under massive armed guard.

the message is that you shouldn't resist. they are trying to "make an example" of him - that if you behave badly and kill a single rich person, you'll be treated as if you killed hundreds of people. you will be treated worse than a man who was found guilty of terrorism. you will be considered guilty without trial. the message is that the rich are a protected class, and you cannot touch them without massive punishment. they are trying to prevent a revolution by showing dominance and force against you.

the message is that the police are a puppet of the wealthy and that the law is not equally applied across class disparity. it is "some are more equal than others." it is "one life is more precious than another."

the show of force wasn't for luigi. it was for us. it was a warning. they are trying to remind us who is really in control.

So there's something I want to say re: intentionally withholding your vote, and I want to do it without coming across as condescending or dismissive.

I've worked as a field organizer in two campaigns, 2010 and 2012, and my job was to help turnout the vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ticket. Technology may have changed, but people are still knocking on doors for specific voters the way they were 12 years ago.

If you say you're not voting/voting 3rd party, the campaign volunteer is supposed to mark that and move on. Their job, in the final month of the election, is to make sure the campaign's supporters have all the information and resources they need to cast a vote.

They aren't collecting data on why you're withholding your vote. They aren't submitting opinion polling results to the campaign. Something like 155 million people voted in the 2020 election, and if you say you're not voting, the campaign is not going to waste a volunteer's time and morale begging you to vote when there are literally millions of other voters to turn out.

Let me repeat that: The campaign does not track why you're not voting. They simply note your vote is not a priority for turnout and move on.

I say this because I see a lot of promotion of non-voting like that's a boycott, when the function is not the same. A boycott is a coordinated mass refusal to engage with an institution—which sounds similar if you see a vote as a good or service to withhold. Unfortunately, it's not.

A vote is a choice you're making as part of a community hiring committee. Your abstention doesn't prevent someone from being hired. It just lowers the threshold for the worst candidate to succeed.

All this to say: In my direct experience as an organizer, abstaining from the vote sends a message. That message is not "You need to try harder to win my vote." It's "Don't waste time on me."

my prof just explained on the syllabus that he’s included more points in the class than we needed to pass, so we could skip up like?? 20 small assignments/quizzes/participation!! and still get a very high grade!!

the idea was that we could focus on assignments that played to our strengths - only do the participation stuff if we like to talk out loud - only do the quizzes/readings if we want to do the class remotely - only do online discussions if we like to talk and share opinions but struggle with anxiety in class ect.

and that’s cool enough but then he pulled up DnD character sheets with drawings he’d done of these hypothetical student player classes and how our various accessibility needs could be gamified to ‘max out’ different aspects of the class to get high grades and like!!!!!

hell yeah!!!! let’s treat accessibility in higher education not just as a necessity but as the fun, engaging, and creative aspect of learning that it is!!! I love this!!
