hit by a sudden wave of realization just how much the themes and concept of reanimating forces of the past and making the dead alive again runs through yugioh 5ds’ veins. like. the whole series.

and yeah sure yugioh is often about reanimating the dead (even in duel links hi duel links <3) but good GOD. FIVE DEES. 5D’s is a show about time and that’s a talk for another day but the way that manifests so often through characters, entities, entire histories long dead and buried being brought back again...it makes me Wild. The SHEER AMOUNT of reanimated corpses (both flesh and mechanical) walking around in 5D’s. All of the Dark Signers. The Earthbound Immortals themselves, this grand evil force from long long ago now rejuvenated and ready to cause chaos again. Leo fucking DIES for a solid few minutes before the Crimson Dragon revives him with Signer powers!!!! Kalin “God of Death” Kessler died twice and came back nonetheless (and his whole thing with trying to atone for his history, being haunted by his past, that’s not far off from all of this too, isn’t it.)

Sherry yearns so desperately to bring her dead parents back, to reclaim a lost past and have it again, she’ll do anything for it. Antinomy, Paradox, Aporia, all three of these long dead old old men brought back in robotic form. Primo gets ripped clean in two and still walks again, the reanimated body of a fragment of a reanimated body, all built by Z-ONE, a man who so desperately wanted to revive the spirit and power of a hero from his era that he Remade His Entire Physical Form to “Become” Him.

just!!! MY GOD!!! every day is Dawn of the Dead in 5D’s in some way shape or form and the more I think about it the more it makes me want to chomp through a plank of wood. slash pos.

I complecatly agree that when it comes to the show about the real world or a world based on a real, it is important to include at least some aspects of poc culture (for example, they absolutely shoulded to it with Luz, bc there is basically no hints on her culture, except saying some Spanish words, calling friends a family and etc)

But when it comes to fantasies, like toh (or she-ra, or any other show with a similar concept and lore) where there are no real human cultures and all races live exactly the same bc It's litterally a part of the lore, It just wouldn't make sence to give, say, Amity, Willow and Gus (3 characters of different races) different cultures, bc there are no cultures in the Boiling Islands AT ALL

And that's basically my main problem with toh too, bc giving some toh characters actual human races doesn't make sence in this lore. Bc 1. It doesn't based on anything. We can see that all people on BI live the same way in almost the same places. Yeah, there are higher places on titan, like his arms, but there wasnt shown any difference in life and climate there 2. Most of the characters, who are just the same as the hexsquad and Eda, are litterally demons. They don't have any human races, they either look like unliving things (stones?) or strange monsters with unusual skin color, face and etc. And none of them have any specific culture. So it seems like all human-like switches look so not even bc they have these races, but only bc they heppened to have this kind of skin color. It could be Pink, green, blue or whatever, but it was just an accident that they happened to have a skin color that humans have.

No, Im not saying that that was what Dana planned, bc It's clearly that she wanted it to be a "representation". Im saying how it suppose to be in fact, bc this kind of representation just doesn't work.

Also, the whole thing that there are witches who are litterally just humans with elf ears is stupid, especially when all of them are suddenly main characters/ characters who have any role in the plot

If Dana wanted to make a fantsy world with demons, she shoulded either show us the difference between human demons and monster demons, or make all characters on BI look like actual monster, not elves

so i watched the finale and. i just woke up and was like wait that Actually Happened

like i don't remember how i got into the owl house but i dont think in a hundred years i couldve expected:

-accurate depictions of abuse and the effects thereof

-openly neurodivergent main character

-exploration of "less known" lgbt identities (nb character??? canonically aroace character?????? thats insane)

-just generally open displays of mental health issues as the story happens (im so happy that it wasnt like oh no. anyways off to do this thing now- like you saw how it affected them and i am so happy abt that)

-literally all those horrifying moment. i am as much of a horror fan as the next but i swear every time monster belos is on screen im like wow okay how did they allow this. what is the target demographic again

-also very clear depictions of physical disabilities (more noticably eda's lost arm but more subtly Dell's nerve damage and eda's curse)

i could probably go on for ages and ages but what i really wanna say is

thoughts on china v usa but im sleepy so its blunter than usual

its wild that this is both teams first match considering this is one of the top matchups. like 2016 gold medalists v 2021 gold medalists. and then the players too

NXT Womens North American Championship Lader Match: Kelani Jordan defeats Sol Ruca, Lash Legend, Michin, Falon Henley and Jaida Parker.  Very much remined me of the mens North American Ladder match, many rough spots including what happened with Lash Legend, when she was taken out I though Sol Ruca was going to get it but Kelani Jordans win surprised me, still fun.

 

NXT Tag Team Championship match: Nathan Frazer and Axiom beat Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson (The OC).  I was thinking Gallows and Anderson would get this since they are now back with AJ Styles in his current feud with Cody Rhodes, Axiom and Frazer remind me so much of MSK and when Paul London and Brian Kendrick were a tag team, fun to watch and can take on big tests of tag teams.

NXT Underground match: Lola Vice defeats Shayna Bayzler, Lola Vice is ready for the next step as the NXT Womens Champion, she has passion, aggression and character to take her to the next step, hopefully she be champ by the summer.

NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match: Oba Femmi (Champion) vs Wes Lee vs Joe Coffey.  This was my favourite match of the night thanks to the different styles in the ring.  Oba Femmi is going to be a monster star when he gets to the main roster.  Wes Lee going into this reminded me of Daniel Bryan and Rey Mysterio when they wrestled in big title triple threat matches, Gallus helped with the numbers but Oba Femmi still the champion.  With Gallus now going after Wes im hoping for a rascals reunion.

 NXT Womens Championship Match: Roxanne Perez (Champion) beats TNA Knockouts Championship Jordynne Grace. Jordynne Grace showed what she was worth in the match and will hopefully be a full time WWE Star in the near future as she has the looks and personality to make it there but she was never beating Roxanne.  Great surprise seeing Dana Brooke or Ash by Elegance there too.  More likely Tatum Paxley challenges Jordynne at against all odds this week.

NXT Heavyweight Championship Match: Trick Williams beats All Ego Ethan Page.  In just two weeks since his debut WWE and NXT have done bigger things for Ethan Page then AEW did.  Felt a little short but the two still worked well together and Trick is still champ but Ethan will get their soon.

Overall thoughts, looking forward to seeing more what NXT and TNA do together, it was a ppv where the women mostly took over and the triple threat was the match of the night, 9/10.

Why I like them/why I don’t: goddd Vetrix is really like. i like him a lot even though i dont talk much about him these days. he truly has one of the Most viscerally unsettling things that's been done to a yugioh character happen to him imo. if i think too hard about him I start feeling sick. Getting your whole body warped by alien demon forces effectively turning you back into a 9 year old AND deep-frying your brain AND half your face is A Fucking Void AND you remember everything before. you remember your kids. youre younger than your kids now. jesus fucking christ. byron arclight. good fucking god.

What I like about their appearance: the Half Green Void Face goes fucking crazy hard. i also really like his little braid :^)

Why I like them/why I don’t: NISTRO ONE OF MY PEAK NICHEFAVS his design is just so 'guy I woulda designed as an OC'. I love his attitude and his dub voice (he shares a VA with primo!!! <3) His bond with Dextra is so sweet AND SO IS HIS GENUINE FONDNESS FOR YUMA ;__; GUY WHO CARES ABOUT THIS 13 YEAR OLD NOW. i just love yugioh guys who are jacked and gigantic and then also good with kids it hits every time.

Favourite moment they were in: i need to rewatch the dark signers arc cuz her duel with misty in the mirror maze goes fucking hard as hell. also when she summons BRD to save her and crow and sherry on the Ark Cradle!!! And it's like IMPLIED HER POWERS CAME BACK FOR THAT!??! ELABORATE MORE RIGHT NOW IMMEDIATELY.

imagine if caleb wanted to wipe out humanity bc his view of them had become so warped after growing up in a town full of witch hunters, so he had this twisted desire to protect witchkind by killing all humans (sound familiar?)

i also like to think caleb initially kept up his "whoa calm down bro" facade during the knife fight but then eventually dropped it and told philip "i shouldve killed you before i left" and went absolutely apeshit on him

(i dont think philip wouldve ever known abt calebs hatred of humanity tho bc imo caleb wouldve been smart enough to not tell him. so philip attacking caleb was still rooted solely on his anti-witch bigotry and does NOT make him a "hero" whatsoever lol)

ik (iirc) dana said evelyn chose caleb bc he seemed to be the nicest person in gravesfield but 1. caleb wouldve been hiding his hatred of humanity for obvious reasons and 2. we dont know shit abt evelyn herself, for all we know her standards couldve been "someone who wouldnt kill a witch on sight"

(speaking of evelyn i personally dont think she was evil in any way. i hc her as more of a batshit chaotic neutral character who did whatever she wanted as long as its fun anyways)

in this case caleb would be interesting foils to philip (anti-human vs anti-witch), hunter (who has an affinity to the human realm and is close to some humans like luz and camila) and the clawthorne sisters (both eda and lilith are flawed but still ultimately good ppl. both the clawthornes and the wittebanes subvert the "good sibling evil sibling" trope this way)

idk exactly what caleb and flapjacks relationship wouldve been like tho they had to have been close to some degree right? but at the same time i think flapjack had always disagreed with calebs anti-human sentiments but was afraid to actively oppose him, and ofc flap was happy that hunter was able to befriend a human and enjoy the human realm

speaking of hunter i. i was gonna say "imagine if hunter found out abt caleb wanting to wipe out humanity lol so angsty" but tbh i think that would just be TOO traumatic to him (even for an angst enjoyer like me) like he straight up wont be able to recover from that imo. or at least take a REALLY long time to recover but either way i dont think he should learn abt that kinda stuff. i do think it would be interesting if luz, eda and lilith found out tho

i also originally had the hc that caleb built the cat eye portal with the purpose of ambushing gravesfield once he was ready, but after the papa titan eye reveal in wad im not even sure who built that portal anymore- well either way caleb still wouldve wanted to build A portal ig (not the other one that led to the clawthorne house, i think that was probably evelyns)

also. the irony of both caleb and philip dying as smth that theyve hated (caleb died as a human and philip died as a "witch/demon", not literally the species in philips case but more luzs definition of "powerful magic user", and we can all agree that monster philip is demonic). i do think caleb was trying to find ways to turn himself into a real witch but philip killed him before he could succeed

However, it was originally supposed to be set in Montauk, and based roughly off of the Camp Hero Conspiracy Theory

(and yes, Imho it’s almost certain that Rick Riordan based the location and name of Camp Half-Blood of of the Camp Hero conspiracy. given that the actual conspiracy theory is VERY dark, graphic and extremely trippy, I have no idea why Rick used it as a source of inspo for a kids’ series.)

However... Stranger Things is set in Indiana

It also features a vaguely-subterranean hellscape that canonically drew inspiration from Camp Hero.

Therefore: some areas of the Upside-Down are connected to the labyrinth, and if you are one of the few ppl who can navigate them (like El or maybe Will), and if you ever think to explore the fringes of the Hawkins area of the Upside-Down, you can find a pretty direct through line to the labyrinth opening in the woods at Camp Half-Blood.

Now, by sheer coincidence, long island is almost exactly across the sound/some sea or bay area from New Haven, Connecticut. (Gravesfield, likely based on the real town of Litchfield, Connecticut, is about an hour’s drive north from New Haven).

Also, due to the riordanverse being working on a vague directional scale (Greece= manhattan and long island, Rome= west coast, Egypt=slightly southern NYC near the river, Scandinavia= Boston) we can look at the location of The Owl House and see that by Riordanverse logic, it would be equivalent to the southern and mid-alpine region irl (”Scythia” and “Thrace” to the Greeks/Romans). 

The folklore of that area overlaps with slavic/russian folk traditions like Baba Yaga, but also has its own distinct creatures such as:

Strigoi, two-souled vampiric witches that turn into (according to some) screech owls, and cannot die.

Tatzelwurms, draconic snakes with the heads of cats that are frequently conflated with Basilisks

Lamia/the Lamai, life-draining vampires who are half-snake, half beautiful woman

Leshi (big deer skull forest protector guys, but that’s not what I think Belos has going on)

Kikimora (thats literally just the name of a creature) (yeah Dana Terrace LOVES Slavic/Alpine myths)

and just about every kind of chaotic neutral forest spirit, household wall-dweller and general Creacher you can think of.

(it’s also where a majority of the novel Frankenstein is set! and that kinda fucks me up!)

So that’s most of the connections, except I haven’t talked abt Vecna or Belos.

so the Whittebanes (whatever other weird lore they have tied up in their story) (its...a lot... way too much, and in to many other fandoms, to go into here) are actually likely, at least going by name and time period, from more northwestern europe.

Idk if you stuck with Riordanverse long enough to read Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, but if you didn’t, here’s the Wiki articles on Draugr (also conflated with/known as Wights, specifically Because Tolkein):

Belos especially really seems close in appearance, powers and tactics to Glámr from the norse Grettir Saga. Also, if you still aren’t convinced, Dana (who grew up in Connecticut and has talked a lot about the show being a love letter to the state) changed “Gravesfield” from “Litchfield”, probably bc otherwise the audience would have been very quick to catch onto.

aaaaaand Vecna is just a really normal lich king/wight/revenant/whatEVER. fuck that guy. anyway he’s a monster now, so like all the other monsters in the Labyrinth, he can’t really leave without a very powerful event or entity freeing him, but he can make a section of the maze his own personal hellscape and fuck with the local teenage heroes in a bid for power and/or free human snacks.

so yeah. The labyrinth was open in the 80s, there was (and maybe still is) some type of revenant in Indiana (and also maybe a pretty vampire boy??? apparently??? idk I’m still new to the ST fandom), there was recently an EXTREMELY powerful and sentient Draugr in Connecticut but he seems to have gone back to whatever offshoot island of the nine norse worlds he came from, also Connecticut has so many Strigoi that it’s kind of ridiculous.
