baseball AU bc it’s me but anyways pitcher Kim x catcher Kenta AU where Kim has been recruited to Tony’s evil baseball team

as a catcher, Kenta isn’t much of a leader, but he is really stubborn about which calls he thinks should be made (he leans towards data-driven decisions and safe bets, and he’s not above walking as many players as he thinks he needs to) and he and Kim get into some heated spats on the mound (Kim does not like running from fights with batters).

Really the only reason Tony is even letting Kenta play is because their two main catchers are out with injuries, and he tells Kim “just throw the ball at him, you’re the star player here.”

Except Kenta is the best catcher they have, when he’s actually listened to, which Kim starts to do when he realizes just how insanely thorough Kenta’s research is on every other player. They start sitting together before every game, building a strategy batter-by-batter—and Kim convinces Kenta to have a little faith in his fastball rather than walking every heavy hitter they come up against.

Their battery solidifies in such a quiet, efficient way that it goes almost unnoticed, until suddenly Kim’s stats are bumping up against Babe’s. And then Tony finds some way to ruin it probably, when one of their other catchers comes off the injured list and Kim insists that he’s only going to pitch for Kenta, and suddenly Tony realizes that Kenta matters to someone, and he can’t have that happening, can he?
