#I'm not really into video games but there are some that I really like

This. As someone who "toughs out" GMing regularly the current state of online DND culture has made me consider quitting multiple times. It rewards a lot of problem players and behavior. I'm really patient as a DM and have helped a couple people get into the game for the first time. But there've been multiple times where "but I saw this on [platform], I thought we were meant to be having 'fun' here" getting used to justify some really shitty behavior that's made me just want to pack it in.

At least we seem to have mostly passed by the super sexual (at times super rapey) culture that was in DND memes for a hot minute back then. Seducing the dragon is funny and all but some people took it way too far.

I guess the frustrating part is players turning up wanting to play as a good person but enacting schemes and cons of horrible people and then being shocked at the possibility of in universe consequences.

I love the channel but I think Jocat's a crap guide to DnD GMing video takes a lot of this up and kind of lead to this current state of dnd. It tries to lay out an even handed "middle ground" compromise, but sometimes a compromise like that doesn't work at every table. Sometimes, not taking things seriously just makes you an asshole, full stop.

D&D 5e supposedly has a GM shortage and idk maybe if the player culture of the game didn't treat GMing as a thankless job and the rules of the game as an issue to be fixed by the GM maybe things would be better. Ah well, who knows. Maybe a couple hundred more "we ruined the GM's campaign on purpose" memes will make people enjoy running the game better.

A Very Coelacanth 2024

I just wanted to thank everyone who has been here or joined up in the past year to say "FUCK YEAH" to our ancient little buddies. This looks like it's been the first year in awhile that I've done the full year with a coelacanth post every day (and some with multiple posts!), and it's been a lot of fun to share it with you.

I really want to thank everyone who's drawn art, made crafts, infodumped history, pointed at specimens in museums, screenshotted video games, or even just shitposted about coelacanths - y'all made it so that I didn't have to spend a lot of time hunting down random content, because it was all right there and it was all beautiful.

Behind the scenes, this has been a tough year for me. I've been sick with cancer for most of the year, and just making sure there was a coelacanth post in the schedule helped keep me going. That and Endless Ocean. I'm sorry we haven't had a coelacanth group dive – I've been too buried in everything else to properly arrange it.

But, again, thank you, you're all wonderful, and fuck yeah to 2025 and even more coelacanths.

Cant remember if you answered this already but do you guys have any personal favorite video games in 2024?

We've finished surprisingly few games this year, and I don't love weighing in on games I haven't finished, but here's some favorites we played (not all of them came out this year though!):

The demo for Perfect Tides Station to Station - I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak of the full first season in the sequel. The first Perfect Tides is one of my favorite interactive narratives of all time it really says something that the sequel so far blows the first game out of the water. Aspirationally good. Criminally underrated. League of its own. Thronefall - Great mix of tower defense hack and slash, and resource management.

South Scrimshaw, Part One - Phenomenal and imaginative visual novel styled as a documentary about the life cycle of a whale species on an alien planet.

1000xResist - Wildly complicated narrative that beautifully weaves together an astounding number of themes. What does it mean to yearn for a place that no longer exists? I would recommend going into it blind.

In Stars and Time - We're bad friends and didn't have the chance to finish it until this year. Really thoughtful time loop narrative. Made us cry.

Nine Sols - I'm breaking my "I haven't finished it" rule because I really like what I've played so far. It's also pretty hard so not something I want to pick up when I get tired. Brilliant metroidvania by Red Candle Games, who are one of our favorite developers. Quite a different direction than their previous titles though (Devotion and Detention.)

Path of Exile 2 - Finally an ARPG with challenging gameplay that's deeper than spamming 4 buttons really fast.

Alan Wake II Welcome to Nightsprings DLC - SO clever and creative. Really loved the text-based adventure in the last one.

On my ever growing backlog: Animal Well, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes (I've heard people have needed physical notebooks for this one though so it might not be my speed), finish Indika, which is so stylish, finish Rise of the Golden Idol (loved the first game!) We've done so many things this year — Pristine Cut, move into a new place, get married, etc, so I've been too tired to engage with a lot of more difficult games.

A/N: I got sick, sorry these are all gonna be so late.

At the team's holiday party, you and your boyfriend do your best to avoid his best friend, who seems way too determined to get you two trapped under the mistletoe for you first kiss.

This wasn't the first time you and Kenma had been invited somewhere as a couple, yet from the way his team fawned over the two of you, you'd have thought it was.

It wasn't always bad, sometimes it was sweet; Yaku teased the two of you sure, but he noticed whenever you or your boyfriend were uncomfortable and backed off, Kai simply made sweet remarks about how you two complimented each other well, short phrases that had both you and Kenma beat red.

Kuroo, to no ones surprise, was the worst.

When you two first told him you were dating he thought it was some type of prank; you and Kenma had been pining over each other to him for so long he had grown hopeless. Turns out, late-night video game sessions can do a lot of good.

That being said, this was you first holiday party as a couple, and for almost 90% of the time thus far you two were avoiding said team captain.

It wasn't a big "high school party", there was no spiked eggnog or blasting music. Yamamoto tried and got told off rather humorously. There was food, drinks, some weird American Christmas music Kuroo found, ugly sweaters, and presents.

And mistletoe.

"I can't believe him," Kenma looked like he was trying to burrow himself deeper into his sweater, one you had picked out for him, knowing if you didn't, Kuroo would, and that would have been worse.

You shrugged, taking a sip of your eggnog before making a face; it may not be alcoholic but it wasn't great, "Really? This seems exactly like something he would have done."

Kenma paused, before letting out a rather loud sigh, leaning so he was against your shoulder, curling so his body was angled towards you, "It is. That makes it worse. I should have known he'd do this."

You smiled down at him, though he couldn't see you, "He kept us too busy with party favors to even think about his meddling."

"Stupid ploy of his," Your boyfriend muttered, glaring at the wall in front of him.

"Maybe we can turn the tables? Trap him under some mistletoe with someone else. I'm sure if you called Bokuto he'd come over."

Kenma shook his head, "One, I don't need to deal with Kuroo and Bokuto, secondly, Kuroo would think it was funny and it wouldn't work the way you're thinking."

Sighing, you tilted so your head was rested against his, "Damn."

You could feel him nod, "Damn is right."

The music could be heard through the walls, and you only felt a little bad that you and Kenma were hiding in Kuroo's mom's office. You both knew it was only a matter of time before he came searching there for you, but you'd be ready to either shove him out or book it.

"Maybe we can trick Yaku and Lev under the mistletoe," He suggested quietly, "Cause a distraction so big Kuroo forgets about us."

You hummed, "That works until demon-upperclassmen-Yaku torments you at practice."

He groaned, "Might be worth it."

You laughed quietly, setting your cup down, "You know," You started before you could second guess yourself, feeling the familiar flutter of nerves in your stomach, "If it were more private I wouldn't mind kissing you under mistletoe."

You felt him stiffen against you, and for a moment you screamed at yourself mentally, but he relaxed a second later, a quiet huff of laugh coming from him.

"Yeah," He reached across to take one of your hands into his, "Me too. He's only doing this cause... well," He cut himself off, and curiosity got the best of you when he didn't finish his thought.

You pulled away some, looking at him, your hands still connected, "Well what?"

His cheeks were pink, and he was doing his best to avoid eye contact, "I had... mentioned wanting to kiss you. Maybe. But not knowing when. He joked about mistletoe at the party. But I forgot until we showed up."

You think almost everyone was caught by surprise at the sheer amount of mistletoe hanging from doorways.

You waited, giving him time to feel comfortable looking towards you, a small smile on your face, "You know... you could have asked me?" Your voice was soft, teasing, "Considering I'm your girlfriend, not Kuroo."

He huffed, half-annoyed, half-laughing.

"I'm serious, just ask me if I want to kiss you. No mistletoe necessary."

It took a second for him to fully process what you said, and his eyes widened a fraction. He visibly swallowed, his grip on your hand tightening slightly.

"Will... can I kiss you?"

The simple question, even if you were expecting it, had butterflies explode in your stomach, your heart fluttering in your chest. Your palms felt embarrassingly sweaty.

"Yes."

You'd, embarrassingly, imagined what your first kiss would be like when you were younger. Entering your teens, it seemed like the biggest deal in the world. You'd have this prince charming of a boyfriend, someone boisterous who took you on spontaneous dates, someone who dipped you under the stars for your first kiss.

No part of you had imagined having your first kiss, hiding away in your friend's mom's office to avoid public humiliation at his goading.

No part of you imagined how it actually felt. All those dreams felt so silly now.

Kenma's lips were warm against yours, your hands still holding one another's. The kiss didn't go any further than this, and it only lasted but a few seconds, but it was enough.

He pulled back first, cheeks far more red than they had been when he asked, and you were sure yours were no better. Despite the anxiety that had been clear on his face, he was smiling, something so soft it made all those nerves disappear as if they'd never been there before.

"Think that was better without the mistletoe," You murmured, and he nodded in agreement.

It was quiet between the two of you for a moment, before--

"There you two are!" Kuroo was standing in the doorway, looking a bit frazzled.

You and Kenma didn't have time to react, but it seemed like Kuroo was too focused on something else to even notice.

"I'm hiding with you, I got Yaku and Lev under the mistletoe and I think--"

"Kuroo Tetsurou!"

You groan and turn around.

It's Luigi, the President of the Robotics Team that you're also a member of. He's wicked smart while being a total frat bro. You begrudgingly give him credit. Rumors say he's constantly partying and getting laid, so it's impressive he has the time to still be one of the top engineering students in your year. You're one of the top students too, but it feels like you have to work 10x harder while Luigi barely breaks a sweat.

You didn't not like the guy. But you never got close, despite both being in the same club and sharing a lot of engineering classes. He was always surrounded by frat bros and a gaggle of pretty girls. Again, not your scene.

You do admit he tried, you were just a bit... grumpy. He attempted a bunch of times to be friendly, even suggesting meeting up for coffee, but you always kept your distance and he backed off once he could tell you didn't want to open up to him.

Several friends of yours have told you, "Y/N, you're kinda like a cat." Fair point.

"Yea, I'm only here because of my friend Jamie," you wave over to Jamie, now sloshed and dancing her little heart out on the dance floor. Like you, she's not in a sorority, but she's more chill with different types of people. You see that she's with some frat bro who looks both scared but impressed at her Wednesday Addams moves, while everyone else eyes her wearily. GO JAMIE.

"If not for her, I wouldn't be here. Frats are not really my thing."

"You never know, Y/N. We often misjudge too quickly, which prevents us from really experiencing life."

Today I found out that a good friend of mine from work passed away suddenly.

He was a cool dude. Really cool, in fact. I remember going for lunch with him just after I'd been employed, and he said that he was going to leave the military if Canada re-elected the Conservative government (we elected the Liberals the next year). It was in that moment that I knew he was a good guy.

He was really into Star Wars. He had a Viper droid model about his desk, and every Christmas he wore a Star Wars themed Christmas sweater around the office. He also had other action figures tucked away in a display case in his office, from various fandoms. They stripped away some of the tough, disciplined military veneer he wore so well.

I'd often poke my head into his office to chat. He'd tease me about something, I'd tease him back, and then we'd inevitably start talking video games. He'd been doing a replay of Baldur's Gate 3. I think he was playing as a Warlock, and had just made it to Act 3. He also had a game he was playing through with his daughter. She had a penchant for playing as a maniac, which meant that the Grove never survived their first playthrough.

As I said, he had a daughter. I saw her back in April. She was nine? Ten? But I'll always remember her as a tiny baby, asleep on her dad's shoulder as he photocopied reports.

The last conversation we had was over an incident at work involving radioactive material (don't worry, its all good). We were joking about what kind of superpowers we'd like if we were exposed to too much radiation, like Spiderman was when he was bitten by the spider.

I'm gonna miss him.

i would've never thought adding benefits to a friendship could make you in love with them

i just finished filming a video with martin and mandy, more specifically, one where the three of us played the sims.

while playing, i couldn't help but think of y/n. i'd love to have her on the channel, but to everyone else, she's just one of my friends.

a girlfriend could've been on the pod, maybe an episode with mandy, too. but this would've just been a little awkward.

i brushed it off, texting her as soon as we finished filming.

before we added benefits into our friendship, i would've just asked her to watch a movie, play whatever silly video game i just discovered with martin, or just hang out.

but now, doing these things feels off, like there's an unmentioned tension in the air. watching a movie's fun, but not when you don't even know how to act anymore.

how can someone concentrate on a movie next to the prettiest woman ever? i still don't know the answer.

i can't focus on the plot when right next to me (although not close enough) is sitting the girl i manhandled just days before.

the drive to her house seems so long, listening to the radio, every song reminds me of her.

everything makes me think of her. the cutest tiktoks about couples? would love to send them, but instead, they're all in a special folder, hoping one day i'll be able to send them all.

once she opens the door, i can't help but admire her. she's dressed in the cutest pyjama set in a baby blue colour.

although it's probably the most basic outfit ever, she makes it stunning.

her long silky hair covers almost her whole back, and she has the sweetest vanilla scent.

you make the shortest small talk before sitting down on her leather couch where i kissed her so many times before.

usually, natural, this make-out session felt awkward.

y/n is just staring in my eyes, looking absolutely lost in her thoughts.

oh, i would love to know what she's thinking about.

i back up a little, breaking my almost desperate (for her love) kiss. she stays watching me, speechless, before finding some excuse.

getting back to making out with her, i barely notice her strawberry bubblegum taste or her slightly glittery gloss.

i'm mostly thinking about her. it's really her on my mind–always–no matter the situation. yes, we mutually agreed we're not ready for an actual relationship, but with her, everything changed.

our friendship was already fulfilling enough. i can't help but almost regret the added benefits. although at the same time, i would've never discovered my feelings.

being more fulfilled in a friendship with benefits than in an actual relationship like the one you had with your ex was kinda crazy but it's my reality.

even martin noticed i'm off these past few days. one month ago i was ecstatic, loving the new added perks in my friendship with y/n... until my feelings came crashing on me like waves on the shore.

i've always loved martin and mandy's relationship. both so accommodating of each other, so in love under any circumstances. but lately i almost feel a slight jealousy towards them.

i see them go to new york and on so many romantic dates, while i sit at home considering if i should send a text or not to my friend with benefits, scared of looking too desperate.

compiled my 2024 art summary + a collection of past ones!

reflections and thoughts below 🌟

so honestly! this was a bit of a strange year for me! this was a time where i admittedly felt bad about my art and wished i pushed myself more and felt kinda lost esp in the second half (the election did not help w my mental health either :'))

however, despite that: i've gotten into some amazing zines and met some really cool people this year, as well as gotten the opportunity to do artwork for a video game! and i just have to remind myself that hitting lows will always be a natural part of the journey and i'll eventually find my highs again. just have to keep working hard and chugging!!

as for what to expect in the new year, i actually have a lot of goals i want to try to meet! major one is finally opening my first online store!! since the animation industry is looking uncertain to me rn i figured i might try selling merch as another way to earn income for myself! i'm nervous bc i've never done something like this before (dw i've been doing research and asking other sellers haha) but still excited! i've already came up with a couple of charm designs so stay tuned for that ^_^

i also hope to get back to drawing more of my ocs and developing my old projects, do more gesture drawing, create more illustrations with more background art, and hopefully go to lightbox expo (i've had bad fomo for a few years now bc the ticket prices intimidated me.....2025 will be it this time 🤞)

but yea! thank you so much for sticking around, i love reading any tags you guys leave on my art they always make me smile or laugh, and i can't wait for what 2025 brings us next!! 💛

"Butch Awakening" BTVS Dream Storytime ft. Spike

I knew I liked women as a teen, but realizing I didn't like men came in college and hit me like a truck. Realizing I'm lesbian was a tougher pill to swallow than believing I was bi. But that's a long story that maybe I could tell later...

However my butch awakening experience from a couple years ago is more fun and easier to tell.

And it involves this sassy fucker. Shoutout Spike ✌️

As a kid in elementary private school, I had an attempt at a tomboy phase. Reflecting back, part of it stemmed from a "pick me" internalized misogyny mindset, but the other part of me felt comfortable and confident when I wore those 2000s DC skate shoes, hi tops, had shorter hair, etc.

I wanted to wear the private school uniform pants but as many butches can probably relate, I had an ass, growing hips, and calves and these were uniform pants designed in 2008-2013. So I settled for baggy jumper dress, baggy shirt, baggy sweatshirt, tights, biker shorts over them, and converse. I could tell something was different but I didn't exactly know why yet.

I tried befriending boys and wanted the bond I saw the non popular boys have with each other as opposed to what I saw in my class's popular Catholic sporty girl crowd. (In middle school I was obsessed with "The Outsiders". Curious if any other butches were). I didn't fit in with the girls in many ways, including my geekiness. I soon learned that I did not fuck with everything my boy classmates said or did. Seemed like I was a weird in between that didn't exist.

That tomboy phase did not last long as a ballerina & theater kid who loved dancing and musical theater. I was pretty good too. I slipped back into femininity before experiencing some gender envy towards pretty men in late high school. As it turns out, femininity (and "liking" men) was just another performance for me, but I loved performing which caused that years-long confusion! So I was "on stage" constantly.

Then came a day in college where I suddenly realized I really wasn't attracted to men, could do without them romantically and sexually for the rest of my life so I should probably dump my boyfriend, and really just wanted women (and as I've grown to accept, people with similar gender experiences as me). Yay lesbian! But I wasn't a butch yet. Butch L was still in hiding.

I started thinking back with a new clarifying lens at so many memories in my childhood. I questioned the "crushes" I had on men in a whole new light.

Then Spike materialized in a dream with priceless awakening insight

I had started watching Buffy for the first time a year or two prior to realizing I was lesbian but put a pause on it. I came back to watching it shortly after my lesbian awakening, which at the time, felt more like an identity crisis. I had a lot of unpacking and reframing to do that I couldn't avoid now. I had previously wondered if I had a crush on Spike because I struggled defining the feelings I had about his look, demeanor, and how female fans swooned over him. That would get cleared up real quick though.

One night I dreamt I was a part of the Scooby gang. We all met at the library in the high school as we prepared to take on the "big bad" of the episode. Buffy, Faith, Willow, and Cordelia stood by me as we looked up at Giles and Spike talking on the stairs.

I looked at Spike with admiration as he shared something important with everyone, but my focus quickly drifted over to the other women standing next to me. Dream me was so jealous of how they looked at him. He held their attention in a way I didn't. I thought about how Drusilla and Buffy wanted him in a way they wouldn't want me.

I eyed his style up and down and grew jealous of how cool it was. So dream me did exactly what anyone would do. As he spoke, I started replacing my clothes with a style closer to his á la 2000s Barbie dress up video game.

Woke up with the realization that I just had really bad lesbian gender envy (and women attention envy) for Spike. I decided that since I was so jealous of his style I could just take parts of it to make it my own. So I did and still sort of do.

That gender envy realization led me down a path for navigating lesbian masculinity and butch values that I hold now!

I Obtained Every Type-Based Exclusive Item Without Generating Wonder Mails

i know i can't really prove it , but here it is: the culmination of several months' work , one of every type-based exclusive item in the game without generating wonder mails . the only way i can really prove it is with myself and a few others in the r/MysteryDungeon discord sharing missions found in our games , which was pivotal to this accomplishment . i can't thank those who helped enough , particularly Zodiac and NXTerminator579 !!

this video was recorded with a capture card , so yes , this is my real cartridge of explorers of sky .

why did i do this ? it's mostly because i wanted to play explorers of sky more . you can't really "100%" it , so i'm going out of my way to collect as much as i can in the game . my IGT is 225 hours , but it's more than likely around 250 because of resetting the game at certain points (a particular challenge i've done is definitely to blame LOL)

was it worth it ? well , kinda . only some of these items are super usable or make a difference . at level 100 , a lot of damage you're taking in the game is under 50 , unless you're running ZIN or ZIC ... and even then , the globes only protect against one type each . the gems are a different story , though - particularly the fighting and flying gems . they offer +1 speed in clear weather , so you could combine this with a cloud nine mon or a weather band to have a constant +1 speed (which also stacks with shaymin-sky's natural +1 !) . dragon and guard (bug) gems protect against status conditions in clear weather , which can also be useful on their own ... the +1 speed is just more powerful in my opinion . but that's just me .

though , if you are interested in just the gems , there is a way to get them without needing a dust at all: if you have two DSes and a copy of T/D AND sky , *1 items from T/D (only T/D for some reason . doesn't work when trading from sky looks like) can be upgraded when trading to sky . so if you get a silk and have the ability to trade with yourself , you can trade the silk over to T/D and then upgrade it by trading it to EOS . i only discovered this TODAY and it's what allowed me to finish this whole thing , since i was otherwise stuck on the rarest dusts in the game .... and i'd gladly take this over having to go in and out of mazes over and over to reset bulletin boards any day .

maybe i'll extend this to every exclusive item in the game if i feel liek it , but for now ... it's onto the very last thing i have to do (which i intentionally saved for last bc it wouldn't take nearly as much time as everything else): living recruitment dex . it's more of a victory lap after everything i've been through , and honestly i already have most of the pokemon in the game anyway , so i'm perfectly fine with it .

Clarification station! A lot of tags on this are absolutely right.

I'm not saying that I wanted Veilguard to deal with it, as we are in the north and everything is different. See end of this post. I'm saying that I wanted Inquisition to deal with it a lot better. I am sick after traveling so I'm sorry if this makes no sense:

Kirkwall happened, and then... Nothing? One of the two big choices in Inquisition is "which faction do you want to kill for the rest of the game". In Inquisition the mages really get nothing. Side with mages, and they get sidelined, no more stories about them. Side with templars, and hundreds of mages (I know, video game mechanics lol) team up with Corypheus and you have to kill them all. It creates this awful dissonance. Like DA2 had enemies dropping out of the ceiling but when you had to fight a templar or a mage, it usually had some story behind it. Inquisition is a free for all who cares

Inquisition actively doesn't want you to ask questions about what is right and what is wrong when it comes to this topic. They REALLY don't want you to like Anders (just look at what a Hawke who romanced Anders says), or acknowledge that what Anders did was because of decades of accumulated pain. In short, Inquisition turns the whole debacle into a "errmmm, both sides are equally bad ^_^" then they have the balls to have a room filled with skulls which belonged to tranquil people to make some kind of weird point.

Either way one of my favorite things about Veilguard is that it doesn't deal with this absolute of a clusterfuck of a storyline. It wasn't perfect in DA2 (who the hell approved of calling a quest "The Tranquil Solution") but at least it actually made you think.

idk if you've been seeing the "what's a circle" anon post going around. as if there isn't an entire quest where you have to soothe the spirits of the slaughtered mages from the dairsmuid circle during the rebellion. negative reading comprehension

Lol no. chances are that I have them blocked.

There are also NPCs in Dock Town who have lengthy conversations about their experiences in the Circle and how they're fitting in. There is so much lore and world building in general if you slow down and listen but the cocomelon ass "I skip through dialogue because I read fast, I didn't know Neve had a prosthetic" crowd will never listen to the NPCs.

But kind of on topic: I do partially blame it all on how god awfully Inquisition handled the mage rebellion though. Circles and mage rights as a whole are in a "whelp we have no idea how to tie up this storyline" state. There is acknowledgment of the Circles plenty in DAV, considering.

I don't get people who blame DAV for "screwing it up and failing to acknowledge the mages circles and the templars correctly". Alllll of that was Inquisition.
