At the risk of sounding REALLY stupid twice in one day
I've been watching the 1619 project on hulu (before I continue I assume that I am infact being the asshole but I don't understand WHY I'm the asshole) and there was one thing said in the healthcare episode that has really been bothering me. Now I know the statistics about maternal and infant mortality rates in America and I know that the numbers are INSANELY DISPROPORTIONATE TOWARDS POC, I am in no way saying they're not or down playing those numbers AT ALL, but I'd also like to point out that across the board America has the most abysmal maternal mortality rates of ANY developed country (incase you didn't know because its important to my point/question). So the episode goes over the history of gynecology (ie. that it was basically developed through experimental, unmedicated, butchering of slave women to make them continue giving birth even when they had pushed their bodies to the limit) and the continued biases affecting modern POC trying to get proper medical care. This is brought home with a heart wrenching story from a mother of twins who lost one of her babies through inadequate care. Now here is my problem, this mother says something along the lines of 'a white woman doesn't go to deliver her babies and worry about if she's going to walk back out' and that has..... really bothered me... I've heard horrific birth stories (from not being listened to when they're in pain, to being assaulted with cervical checks when they state they don't want them, etc etc) from women of all colors (again I'm not arguing that women of color don't suffer these things MORE OFTEN AND DIRECTLY AS A RESULT OF THEIR COLOR) and I myself suffered EXTREME fear when I had my son that I was just going to end up a maternal mortality statistic. So this line has really... stuck with me... I tried talking to my friend about it and she basically said that this line (which I feel like is damaging on the grounds that its implying that white women don't have to worry about these things INSTEAD of really driving home the reality that women of color are suffering disproportionately even compared to women of any other race) is right and just and I'm wrong for feeling like this kind of framing is a disadvantage to us all. She even posited that when I go to a doctor if said doctor causes me pain I will receive sympathy and an apology, which is not true. I'm sure I'm MORE likely to get that than she is, I don't doubt that at all but that doesn't change the worries or injustices I encounter. If I get a bad cut and you break an arm we are both in pain and need of care even if yours is clearly the greater and more urgent.
ultimately I feel like this is a framing issue, but its just.... really bothering me.... and as I said above I'm willing to accept that I'm the asshole here but I want to understand WHY black women can assume to understand my experience when it is wrong for me to assume theirs (I don't have a better way to say that, but I'm not trying to say that white women SHOULD be allowed to assume their experience. Only that neither should have the right to assume the experience of the other).

Finally watched Caped Crusader and I have ✨thoughts✨.
Oswalda is straight up iconic. Loved every scene with her. I actually laughed out loud when the dude goes "Thorne got you to kill the wrong son?" and she responds "Not that!" I'd let her lock me in a suitcase and throw me in the sea. She gets a gold star ⭐
I like that we get to see Selina's origin. I like the classic suit. That's kinda it though. A bit sad that Bruce didn't feel any connection with her. Just not a huge fan of her character here. She doesn't feel like Selina (a problem most of this show faces tbh).
I was loving the Harley stuff. The bit with Renee was so cute, and I love that she really was passionate about helping Bruce move past his trauma. I really like that she's Barbara's friend. Was really upset at the fakeout death but at least she was just joshin. The villain stuff felt like fetishes which like okay. I guess Bruce needed to put in something to replace BruceBabs. Anyway, that's the final dig towards him. As much as this Harley episode wasn't my favorite, a promise is a promise. Although I do gotta ask, WHY CAN'T RENEE CATCH A BREAK IN HER LOVE LIFE >:(((
No fucking way the moral of episode 7 was "the system is totally not screwed, it's just a few bad apples and also a criminal is a criminal and should be jailed". Barbara literally says the system sucks cause the cops can do what they want and get in anyone's pockets and then nearly gets killed by a cop and then they end it with "actually, I think you do"?! I mean yeah that specific guy deserved prison but ending it on that note of Barbara feeling betrayed and confused on her morals tells a very not-so-delightful message. Glad the show backtracks on all that immediately but it's still weird and definitely could've used some revising to fit in with the rest.
Onomatopeia was awesome though. I remember people claiming his shtick couldn't work when he appeared in Superman and Lois. They said that it only worked in comics and would be too silly out loud. Happy to report that they're wrong.
I feel like I'm the only one who was excited to see Waylon but that's okay cause I got enough excitement for everyone. Love to see my mans kicking the shit out of potential perverts. You go, Waylon!
Dick, Jason, Steph, and Carrie. Definitely an interesting combination. But it's also so nice to see a Jason who grew up in a different environment and is therefore adorable with no rage in his heart. As opposed to Carrie who was ready to kick some ass. The ending to episode 8 really understood Batman, what with him saying he can't leave her there, carrying her and shielding her under the cape, and then asking about her later.
The Harvey bit is kinda cool but 1, I've always been iffy on the shotty DID stuff and 2, I think they coulda gone further. Just watch The Long Halloween for a better Two Face plot.
I like Harvey helping that guy get his stuffed animal back. That was a nice small character moment. If we had more stuff like that and Bruce being unable to confess his emotions to Alfred, I think this whole thing would be better. This one made up for episode 7's little message by having Barbara tell Harvey that it's not so cut and dry and that he deserves help too. I'm glad they went back to that after the whole "sometimes things are black and white" bit. Batman is about helping people just as much as Superman is and I feel like sending a message that "nope, bad is bad and he should just punch people" doesn't fit the entire thesis of Batman.
This finale really encapsulates how this show doesn't quite understand the character of Batman. It may be comic-accurate for him to be an asshole and put on the voice randomly, treat Alfred like crap, and randomly break character with stuff like "don't start growing a conscience now, Dent" but as I said it goes against the whole thesis. This is more along the lines of the Nolan films with the "Bruce Wayne is the mask" bit. And we all know how I feel about those films.
And then it ends on a boring cliffhanger with the boss guy and then a shitty Joker teaser. Boo.
In short, this show is good but it's not anything special. I do really like the classic Batman aesthetic, but that's pretty much it. It doesn't really understand the characters like MAWS and WFA, the overarching plot is kind of uninteresting and it doesn't feel like we're building up to something great. I feel like this show really wanted to use the episodic style to take a look at all these different elements of Gotham's world with references to existing characters and aspects. But whereas MAWS smoothly slid those into its narrative and setting, this just kinda feels like a villain of the week show instead of working towards this grand narrative. And that can be a good thing, I mean I'm a Scooby Doo fan for crying out loud, but in this scenario, it just doesn't work that exceptionally. If it gets a season 2, I'll probably watch it. But this isn't something I'd be excitedly waiting to see new episodes of.

Disney-era Lucasfilm has given me essentially one film I adored (Rogue One, which also has my favorite SW ship and two of my favorite SW characters in Cassian and Jyn). It's also produced two more films that I very much liked (though only one of those still remains high in my estimation tbh), and a bunch of SW material that is not really the SW that plays in my mind, but at least fun and interesting to think about with the very glaring exception of TROS. I never had any investment in Legends, either, so for me the Disney era is not some huge loss.
I say all of this to emphasize that I'm not a kneejerk Disney SW hater. Nevertheless, I'm actually very disappointed with DLF's tendency to emphasize how ground-breaking and diverse and ~challenging some new SW media thing is without doing much to support the people involved or appearing to foresee that a fanbase prone to bigotry, nostalgia, and throwing screaming temper tantrums for decades on end is not going to react well. This is in no way an excuse for those fans, but DLF does not seem to ever predict how SW fans will respond despite their well-documented history of responding really badly to anything that remotely challenges them.
I love SW and I love my personal friends in SW fandom, but there have always been a significant number of vocally hateful and reactionary SW fans who manage to shape the discourse around basically everything in it. This is completely predictable. The fact that DLF seems completely unprepared for this reaction every time they give central roles behind and in front of the camera to women and/or POC, and also appears to do very little to support the actual RL marginalized people they hire when not just cravenly giving in to the worst elements of the SW fanbase (*cough*TROS*cough*) is incredibly frustrating.
Yeah, this is about DLF's poor handling of eminently predictable fan tantrums over The Acolyte which has just culminated in cancelling it after a bare eight episodes, but it's happened so many times at this point. The Acolyte was far from perfect but after how visibly unprepared DLF were for the raging bigotry directed at Kelly Marie Tran, John Boyega, and Daisy Ridley, or how weird people were about Solo, or the misogynoir surrounding the response to Reva in Obi-Wan Kenobi, or or or—they absolutely could and should have known that something like The Acolyte was going to need a lot of higher-level support to have any chance of success. At the very least there's no excuse for being surprised at this point.
And it feels a bit like it, and the actual people involved in it, were never really given a fair shot and the real higher investment is going to be in, like, Baby Yoda 4: Now With More Ewoks.
My friends and I just finished our first run of Jedi: Survivor, which we really, really liked, but there is definitely a tragic white boy protagonist propped up by POC and/or women (many now dead!) aspect to the whole thing that feels essential to its popularity. And it is frustrating and disappointing and all the more so because it's so eminently foreseeable at this point.

about the whole preoccupation w incest thing amongst white people on the internet i haven't really noticed it? i am white and find it intriguing (i was incestually abused as a child and so i find it interesting how it develops in families, how people respond to it, etc (it's kind of been part of my healing process)) but i don't really see anyone being obsessed w it? maybe pointing out themes of it in media but that's kinda it? some of my mutuals, idk if they're white, but they have also been abused the same way i have and find discussing it or finding media with incest in it to be a part of exposure therapy/dealing with the trauma. id love to hear your thoughts on it :)
I've talked about this a few times in the past, but I'm posting again to make my views & boundaries known that 1. Dni if you're a "pr0shipper" & enjoy shipping incest, I do not want you here, 2. Fiction does not exist in a vacuum. Im going with the assumption that anon is not a proshitter & they're asking this in good faith. Just putting a readmore because this got long and also for anyone who is triggered by this topic
The conversation I think is surrounding proshitters ("shippers"), but I think the conversation also goes deeper into things like "incest" & "step family" being popular porn site searches that very often feature white actors, as well as those things showing up in film, book, and TV, but in romantisize/sexualized/downplayed ways written by and featuring, again, white people. So I believe generally the "obsession" part means White people who are overly preoccupied with seeing incest quite often, especially and specifically in sexualized, fetishized, and/or romantisized ways. Because personally (& I believe other nonwhite people can attest to this as well, and that's what the other posts mean to say) a lot of the people who have this overkeen interest in incest are White.
Like it's not talking about people wanting to have nuanced depictions of incest, why it's bad, how that affects people & can be extremely traumatizing, and then approaching that topic respectfully (because it should be, that's a terrible thing and showing respect for victims of it & ensuring its not, accidentally or not, endorsed or shown as "okay" or normalizing it, is important. Execution as well as intent are important & should be done with tact.) The people who are mentioned as being "obsessed with incest" as these pr0shippers who find incest "sexy", want to see it, actively search it out where it is both romantisized/sexualized/fetishized, and will apply it in fanon interpretations even when it doesn't exist in canon or this interpretation wouldn't/doesn't make sense anyway, specifically because they enjoy seeing it. They find it titillating. Quite a few of the popular users on this site who have famously defended incest (and/or pedophilia) both in real life AND as proshitters have been... White. And racist.
I think there IS a correlation between White people, proshitters (who are usually people who defend romantisized depictions of things like incest), and liking incest, because I very often seen proshitters be racist (and other types of bigoted tbh), and ALSO defend things like racist depictions of nonwhite characters, things like slavery AU's featuring Black characters, or colonizer AU's, and the like. It's a common joke (not so much of a joke tho tbh) that the more White people that exist prominently in a fandom, then the less fun it is, specifically because of racism that will then exist in that fandom. So there's this huge overlap of White fans being racist but ALSO there being a lot of fans who enjoy seeing incest in their fave medias, because of the proshitters, who do both. There was also that whole thing where a bunch of popular white users on here (many of whom ALSO defended incest) defended sexual raceplay & then called any nonwhite person (ESPECIALLY BLACK USERS) "homophobic" or "transphobic" for rightfully and correctly calling this racist.
Lots of White people like to do this thing where, if they are marginalized in some way, then they'll weaponize that marginalization against anyone who criticizes them for something (most often racism), even if their marginalized identity has nothing to do with the topic or was brought up. White women who happened to be gay called me "homophobic" and "misogynist" (even though I'm a bi woman but you know) because I talked about the nazi associations & racist inclinations of cottage core. I saw multiple White lotr fans call a specific artist "homophobic" because that artist asked that their art not be tagged as an incest ship, and that incest ship is very popular (and their art piece was depicting them as just family), but this incest ship isn't even canon, and the artist wasn't actually homophobic or against gay relationships in general. So they essentially just called this artist "homophobic" for no reason. Because they didn't want their art piece of two family members to be incorrectly interpreted as incestuous. Im even reluctant to draw fan art of some of my favorite characters who are family members, because I dont want people who ship incest to interact with it or tag it as that, and the fact that so many artists even have to ask people NOT to do this is insane.
Like it's one thing if someone analyzes media with it or might find comfort in certain characters in books or TV etc because they feel seen in their trauma, and yet can acknowledge that this isn't for everybody and not everyone processes their trauma this way, and that seeing it (incest in media) can make trauma WORSE for many people, AND that not all representations are made equally, and none of those are free from being available to criticism in approach of that representation anyway. But very often there's White fans (many who aren't even incest victims themselves, so they don't have the "I'm coping" excuse) that are offended that other people don't like seeing incest at ALL, that people will (understandably) not want to interact with them if they're a pr*shipper, and hate being reminded that treating incest like its a fun little interest that shouldn't be handled with care just because it's being featured in a fictional situation (or even sometimes when it's NOT) is pretty fucked up and even disrespectful & insensitive to incest survivors, and then chalk up any criticism of the amount of sexualized/romanticized incest as "censorship" even though that's not what's happening, and again, very often self victimize themselves and often are also racist.

Ramblings regarding Dr. Tenma
I was thinking ONE of the reasons why Tenma could've stayed with Eva for so long and put up with it was because he was scared.
Cuz the moment he graduated highschool, he left Japan for a foreign country (according to Another Monster). So of course, he was very young, that's a scary thing for a young person. Sure, it's not like anybody had his back in Japan (cause his family were a bunch of opportunistic rats) but he had people he knew, and knew what to expect, and now he's in a whole other country with people who can be hostile to him for being asian, since at the time they didn't take kindly to foreigners/minorities.
He made friends in college but based on how he is (in Another Monster, it is said he never liked being in groups), he probably didn't feel like it was actually meaningful since none of those friendships lasted. I feel like people were only interested because OMG ITS JACKIE-CHAN!! joined their white-dominated college.
Really, the only person he could rely on was the director Heinemann and Eva.
He put up with it because he needed someone to depend on, he needed someone to guide him and tell him what to do just like Eva did, because in the end that is all he had. So the poor thing, of course, would be scared to be left without the things and people whom he relies on, even if those things harmed him.
He was young... Only when he grew up and was able to live independently, he was able to let go of those things, after he's had enough.
All the people he's depended on wanted nothing but the worst for him tbh </3 maybe that's why Eva's curses never phased him cause he was used to it already due to his bitch mom (unreasonably harsh on him according to Tenma's former colleagues. I'm 100% sure it's worse than they put it cause Tenma is the most patient and forgiving person ever, his family and stupid mom must've been the worst if he literally never went back, never responds to his brother's letters and overall does not wish to speak about them).
I could go in more detail about my headcanons for this but I'll see.

As anyone ever talked about the showrunners decisions to choose biracial actors for season 1 to play black characters?
I have never seen people talk about it,but i don't really follow this fandom. I know in America they don't make the difference, a biracial, the one drop rule makes them all black,i'm black from Europe with African heritage, we do make the difference between black and biracial. So it was very interesting to me to always see the fandom, the press, the actors to characterize them as just black.
Don't take me wrong i know that we come in all shades, and phenotype but there probably a deliberate choice in casting light skinned biracial actors ?
The reason is clear and i can't blame them for that given the first response to their casting before the production
But i also want to read other people opinions about that,if anyone has interesting articles, threads and discussions about that please share?
Of course we can disagree, that the beauty of exchanging between adults.
I haven't finished reading it yet but I find this blog very interesting, thank you
Hello! and ohhhh boy this is gonna be a topic.
So...I'll say what I'm aware of and ofc anyone else can reblog and reply or inbox reply if u wanna be anon to respond to this.
First, and this is kind of an aside to ur main point but I just wanted to include this tho, biracial ppl in America are treated like shit. I remember Bailey Bass in...maybe one of the show podcasts? talking about how she never felt she was black until she was on the show set. On the surface, it might appear as if America is accepting and ppl are only seen as one identity, but the reality of navigating anything day to day as a biracial person is v complicated and shitty. I have gotten a lot of rly gross asks over time (which I didn't publish) about Jacob's friendship with Sam, along with his wife being white too, and it's all implied to judge him more bcuz he's biracial in the first place.
Second, Hollywood has a major colorism issue (bcuz America does). I don't know of any articles written about this for IWTV itself (I tried searching for general tumblr posts I remember seeing. I can't find the ones I wanted but I did find this about Ayo Edebiri) but I know it's been talked about in certain ways around here over time. The actor who played Jonah in S1, Thomas Antony Olajide, was considered for the role of Louis and fan reactions would have prbly been worse if he'd been cast. When Delainey replaced Bailey, a lot of negative reactions arose bcuz of colorism.
That's all I can remember rn. I don't think it's been talked about a lot tbh bcuz this fandom is so racist as it is that this would mostly...not go over well. But since this account exists now as it does, maybe ppl would be more willing to discuss it.
But generally the main reason is bcuz Hollywood barely wants to rly cast anyone but white ppl as it is, so we're still in v early days and yet the backlash that occurs every time is so extreme anyway.

“Besides, thinking in terms of "clearing your name" is very black and white and self-important.” You said this on my anon about how to not care about randos blocking you, can you elaborate there?
Tbh framing it as callout posts maybe wasn’t the best choice, J agree that no one in 2023 who listens to those is very smart, I’m thinking more of where I get in a discussion about X representation with one individual and I don’t respond the way they like/respond at all and don’t 100% agree with them and bow down to their infinite wisdom since they’re part of X minority group, and then that person starts *privately* warning others in the fandom (like in discords and stuff) that I’m X-ist or “unsafe for X people to follow” or I “talk over X people” and a bunch of people who weren’t involved at all start blocking for safety reasons. (And yeah I’m not being paranoid, people have told me this is happening.) The thing is, I’m sympathetic to why marginalized people are a bit over cautious in blocking — I have been myself, too — but there are so many people now who weaponize that for mean girl shit by just saying “racist” or “homophobic” or whatever and not discussing the actual situation, since that might cause some of these individuals to disagree with them if they knew. And it bothers me so much because a lot of these people are themselves deeply bigoted in other ways: for instance, I know someone in a fandom who was slurred as antisemitic and blocked by a bunch of randos where the “antisemitism” was “disagreed with one (1) Jewish person about whether a fictional group was a Nazi analogue” and the Jewish user in question was really racist toward people from some of the groups victimized by those other proposed analogues — but of course that is left out in that person’s version of events, as is the fact that plenty more Jewish people in the discussion agreed with OP than didn’t. Situations like that and what happened to me are why I think now it just makes sense to require evidence (as in the offending posts) when someone does an “OP is a terf” or whatever, so you can make up your own mind — but I’ve seen people get accused of shit just for asking that. Someone even said in response “a trans woman asked you nicely and you can’t even just take her word for it and block the TERF, you have to ask her to do the emotional labor of finding proof for you?” Yeah? She’s a stranger? I think it’s normal not to listen to random accusations from strangers without evidence behind them????
--
I mean, I assume tons of people block me for "safety reasons", but that's both their prerogative and a them problem.
You can either placate people all the time, or you can accept that some people will find you contentious/annoying/scary/whatever.
Whisper campaigns and callouts aren't actually different here. Someone who believes the rando that you're a bigot is also not interested in doing their own thinking and investigation. Maybe they're tired and busy. I can't fault them for that. Maybe they're easily led and you're better off without them.
The situation remains the same: there are a fuckton of people in the world and you are not going to run out of people to hang out with just because some believed a rumor.
People who go "How dare you ask for evidence?!" are generally bad news, especially when they have decided to intentionally take upon themselves the labor of spreading the news about so-and-so.
If someone demands I do a thing and then throws a tantrum, it's that person who's getting blocked.
--
As for why it's black and white and self-important, my reasons were in the other post:
Yes, I'm sure some people did just believe a whisper campaign and they genuinely think you're a bigot and that scared them off...
...but to assume that's necessarily why a specific person blocked you is silly.
It's entirely plausible that they blocked you after looking at your actual tumblr/twitter/whatever and finding you not to their taste. Maybe they looked after hearing the rumors, but that doesn't mean the rumors themselves are why they blocked. It's plausible that they block everyone whom they perceive to be involved in wank on the theory that no matter who's at fault, blocking all and sundry will lead to a quieter fandom life. They may block everyone who ships something they dislike. They may block for one single annoying response on one single post that they happen to see. (I have blocked hundreds of people for this kind of reason. Maybe thousands.)
The reason it's black and white thinking is that many people block for all kinds of murky "I just felt like it" reasons that aren't as dramatic as dividing other users into Safe and Unsafe, Good and Bad.
The reason it's self-important is that you're imagining that you matter to this person. You probably don't. Their reasons may be extraordinarily petty and not this grand drama about whether you're a bigot or not.
--
I mean, sure, the pattern you describe above is a constant in fandom now from what I can tell, but who cares?
The people being hurt by this are the people who are preemptively blocking interesting tumblrs, not the tumblrs that got blocked.
I suppose it's compassionate to wish for people to learn how to do their own research and not be swayed by rumors, but it's also not my job to save them from their lack of critical thinking skills.

My favorite fic of yours
ONE? You want me to pick ONE!?!?! pfff. no. Red&White&Blue&Gold, the Fall Funfair one, and Orange Crush are the funny ones that jump to mind first that will always have a place in my heart, and then also the watertower fic and all of the TLOU AU fics. and also all of the bigfoot AU. and also just all of your stories.
Something I remember vividly from reading one of your fics
Bean cans and sexy disarmament from Entirely on Purpose. Chicken names (lol) and chicken deaths (oh no!) in TLOU au. Losing Barb in Into Dust.
What made me the most emotional after reading
Into Dust and just all of the TLOU AU
What I like the most about your writing
First off: you write fantastic dialogue and awesome banter!
But even more than that, the thing I love about your writing is that you are SO good at writing emotional complexity - both in your silly/funny stories and in the ones that make me cry. By which I think I mean you always write characters simultaneously feeling multiple things at once, often in ways that they aren't even fully aware of themselves. Like .... you're good at writing the conflict between the words people say (and the fronts they put up) versus the underlying feelings that they're either pushing away or leaning into, if that makes sense? Which works so well because you use descriptions of actions/physical sensations just very well and very judiciously. It's a lot of 'show don't tell' kinda work and its amazing.
Also, you're very very good at having a sort of lyricism/poetic-ness - with repeated phrases or callbacks and such - about your prose that just makes the vibes of your stories like ... really rich and satisfying (like a good stew... if it was also a piece of music? idk. I'm mixing my metaphors here.)
A question I have about one of your fics
Any favorite lines/parts you want to talk about from the last few fics you published??
(numbering got fucked up in this ask somehow - sorry!)
Brroooooo this is so nice 😭 Can you write my resume please you make me sound so good lol
I dont even know how to respond to all the nice things you said besides to say thank you for being nice to me 💜💜💜
I think this might actually motivate me to write today lol so thank you for that also.
Hmm. Things I want to talk about from my recent fics. Well. First of all I think the proposal in the boot fic is very sweet and i am really fond of that one and almost nobody has read it and they should because its cute.
And I really liked writing the Elaine scene in the jancy breakup fic, I never really write OCs and she only exists for like a paragraph but I am kind of obsessed with her. Also just that fic in general I think is sort of interesting structurally and I think I captured the mid twenties lostness of it pretty well.
And tbh I really enjoyed playing with their dynamic in the falafel smut? It's the smuttiest thing I have ever written but I feel like there is interesting character stuff happening there that made it fun to write in a way I often do not find smut writing to be.
now i just need to write something new to talk about lol.
thank youuuu!!

i'm glad you brought up the issue with gender selectable ros. i know authors do it with the intention of being more inclusive, but it really doesn't do anything for diversity and representation. a lot of the times, these characters end up being one-dimensional because it's hard to develop a character when so much about them have to be left blank. other times, they come across as having been written with a male character in mind. and this has to do with the fact that they tend to be masculine. and while women and enbies can be masculine, almost none of these characters are feminine, even though men and enbies can be feminine too. so it's easy to think that they have stereotypically male traits because they were written to be male. it doesn't help when authors slip and use he/him pronouns when coding them in.
authors also don't take into account that male characters are almost always prioritized over female ones. look at the tags for any if, and it'll likely be dominated by the male characters. if the choice is there, a lot of people will choose to have a predominantly (if not completely) male cast because these people tolerate female characters at best, and if there's a choice not to have them in the story at all, they're going to choose not to have them. and this gives way to even less diversity.
i don't think there's any benefit to having gender selectable ros. authors are better off writing fleshed out characters. and authors would do well to reflect on their attitude towards female characters. i understand that they don't bring in the same engagement their male counterparts do, but i would hope that most authors write because they have a story to tell. and if that's true, a lot of them need to start reflecting on why women have such little presence in their stories. is it because there's no room for them in the story you're trying to tell (which can be true) or is it because you don't care enough to write about them? and that might seem harsh, but i think we're at a point where these questions need to be asked.
I don’t even particularly blame authors btw. It’s just a vicious circle.
Audience have a responsibility in this. They just ask questions or seem interested in white boy#1…. There is never people interested in the female li.
So here comes the circle.
People ask more content about white boy, and they send ask after ask of just about them. Author obvs just respond to the questions they get, which gives even more content for white boy, which again causes more people to be interested in white boy, and so on.
Authors are just in hard place, I don’t think they have a favorite character, I mean they created all of them. They probably wish all their characters would be loved the same.
And tbh. I don’t know which one is more work…. To make a character gender selectable. Or just have a full fleshed on character with a set gender. I would have to ask for authors opinions on that.
It’s a really hard topic. Cause at the end of the day most authors do what they can to make everyone happy and this is just a hobbie. And I appreciate them very much so it’s hard for me to be too critical about it
I mean…. If I had their talent I would go around straightbaiting everyone but that’s just me lmao

In response to my AoUV poll, here we go! This will be long and I might have more to come later, but thanks so much to everyone who participated, it was great to see your thoughts :D
First of all, I'm so grateful that no one picked the Lowes. That would have been terrifying.
For the others, I'm going to share my thoughts on each of the families because I've thought about this extensively. But obviously it's just my personal opinion, and all of them are at least a little fucked up in their own way. It is Ilvernath, after all.
The Macaslans. Isobel has my whole heart, I swear she does, but the Macaslans as a rule are atrocious. Showing up to every funeral in the city and stealing magick from dead bodies as they're put in the ground is beyond tacky and disrespectful, and Cormac is beyond slappable. His "how many ways can we commodify Isobel to make money, 15% goes to the champions" bullshit gets me so upset. We haven't met many Macaslans but if he's the representative, hard pass.
The Grieves. I disagree with the people who picked them, but I do understand. I've talked about the Grieves a lot lately, so I'll just summarize and say that they're in a truly awful situation where they have few options other than to give up. None of that excuses what they did to Gavin and, tbh, their other kids too. This family is a hot mess.
The Thorburns. They're serial killers. They lie and cheat and cut deals with the government to control high magick, and murder people in Ilvernath and drain them of their life magick and frame someone else for it. Then they call themselves the heroes, enforcing this idea so strongly that their champion causes an insane amount of damage trying to live up to it. I really struggle to get past this.
The Blairs. They won the poll, and I absolutely get it. They're straitlaced and dependable, and they keep to an honor code. My issue comes with the severity of this honor code, and the collateral damage that comes with it. Blairs keep the code and their word, but all that honor and protection is for the cause of...the exact same cause that everyone else has. They do better things than the others do, but only to pat themselves on the back over it and claim their prize. Their honor code blinds them to everything that isn't black-and-white—see how Finley's moms respond to him suggesting there's a way to break the tournament. Don't get me wrong, they're way better than Elder Malvina, but the Blairs are not saints, and I think part of what makes them so insidious is that they make it look like they are.
I'm briefly grouping the last two together, because they're the families we know least about and that (in my opinion) seem like the most reasonable. I'm going to preface this by saying that yes, the Paynes and Darrows trick Briony and the others by swapping their stories in All of Our Demise. Yes, this causes problems for them in the tournament.
But honestly, can you fucking blame them? Their kids were just murdered, and these people who are trying to stop people from being murdered do not seem to care. From the Paynes' perspective, their champion died brutally and Briony and the others mentioned her literally zero times in their appeals for help. From the Darrows' perspective, it's even more justified. Briony killed their champion and then she and Isobel publicly lied about it, responding with little more than an "oh oops" when they're called out on it. I don't blame the Darrows and Paynes for not wanting to help them.
Taking a closer look, these two families want high magick for very different reasons from the others. The Lowes and Grieves want it for power, the Macaslans want it for money, and the Thorburns and Blairs want it for glory. Granted, we don’t get to see too much of the other two, but by all appearances they’re more interested in how high magick works.
The Darrows are all about studying, keeping records, and learning. It seems like they’re interested in figuring out the what and why of high magick for the sake of knowledge, not necessarily using it. As for the Paynes, All of Our Demise reveals that they’re inventors, which explains so much. They make things. And sure, there’s no guarantee that they would use high magick for good, but the general vibe we get from them is that they want to make things and be left the fuck alone. So even if the Paynes and Darrows originally agreed to join the curse with the other families, the current situation heavily implies that they’re doing it for far less selfish and destructive reasons.
All of this is to say that, in my opinion, it would be between these two. And I’d give the edge to the Paynes for two reasons, one being that, I’m sorry, any family that picks Carbry as a champion for a death tournament needs a reality check. If it turns out that there were literally no other siblings or cousins, I will apologize. Don’t get me wrong, I like Carbry, but he is not death tournament material. Also, firsthand knowledge is admirable, but it’s kind of a flimsy reason to send your kids to be killed every twenty years. None of the families are really morally defensible here, but at least you could make the argument that one of them has the means of and interest in using the high magick for something practical. So ultimately, that one family is the one that gets my vote.
Long story short, I wish we got more information about these last two families. But considering the information we do have, and the dots that are left to connect, I would have to pick the Paynes.

Hi!! I'm the anon that sent that long and uh, "immaculate" ask about the scarian fic :D I'm really happy that you liked it so much, it made my day to read your response <3 (i somehow saw it only days after you responded and i was like "aw man it'd be awkward to respond so late" so... i didn't, sorry ;-;)
But!! I saw you were curious about the Winged Grian lore, so I'm gonna try to expand a bit on what other have already said.
So, there's a few ways that the fandom originates Grian's wings: Avian/Mob Grian, Watcher Grian, or simply Shapeshifting Elytra.
Avian/Mob Grian: Either born as an avian (a person with bird characteristics) or a mob (aka parrot/chicken). This usually presents as: Grian with white chicken wings, parrot wings (either the tri-coloured mc one or other irl parrot species) or custom coloured wings pertaining to his colour palette. Lately, due to Him getting the Dragon Egg and protecting it, people have also been giving him dragon wings, which belongs to the headcanon that his wings have shapeshifting abilities. This headcanon (i can't remember who first made the headcanon, sorry!!) can be found related to the other origins as well. (You might also find older stuff with dragon wings due to a very brief story line at the end of s6).
Watcher Grian: The backstory to this one is pretty big, but to condense it: In Grian's previous SMP series, Evo, there were beings of great power that tasked themselves with creating worlds, updates and so on in the MC universe. It happens that they take an interest in Grian and his server, helping them along the journey of hopping from update to update, beginning from the Alpha build. At the end of the series, right as Grian & co go to the end to defeat the Ender Dragon, Grian is taken by them (this technically was him starting his Hermitcraft series at this point, but lore wise it's a big blank of time). They are not really shown as malevolent, but since we don't really know their true motives, people went on to create their own takes of them. ATUS (And the Universe Shifts) was the most popular HC fanfic for a long long time (it was even read by Cleo) and it is what shaped today's most popular interpretation of the Watchers: entities with too much power and too little compassion, aka pretty evil! Anyway, Watcher Grian is presented as: Purple, lots and lots of purple and void and EYES (the SUPER focus on eyes is a bit more recent, tho), with the Watcher symbol & mask. He's been called (by the fandom) the Red Watcher, Techno's Blood God (due to the red watcher thing) and the Chaos Watcher. Wings usually are purple, void, cosmic, EYES, red, black, his cloak, or a combo of any of those.
Shapeshifting Elytra: this sorta speaks for itself. It's actually a headcanon that is used for all the other hermits as well, due to the focus being on the Elytra, rather than the character's origins! Mostly, the idea goes like this: Elytras take the shape, form and colour of whatever the player is like, unique to each of them. For example, Scar, as he is sometimes (canon and fanon!) a vex mob/hybrid, would have vex wings, sometimes he'd have wings matching his outfits and skins. This is presented as: Grian's wings shifting from watcher wings (s6) to (sometimes, depends on the fan artist) chicken wings (s6) to parrot wings (s7) to dragon wings (s8). That, or simply from parrot species to other parrot or bird species across seasons & smps (like last life).
I think that's all! I miraculously haven't hit the word limit in anon asks, so imma stop here, before i do! Hope this is helpful, but if you'd like to know more, check out @/give-grian-rights, they're basically the expert on Grian and his lore :D I'd also be okay with dms, btw, as long as you are too, but tbh I'd prob just ramble on and on (like I haven't already xD) Hope you have a great day <3
ah, hello again!, and yeah, that’s pretty much what i was aware of - thank you for the very comprehensive guide, though.
i’m very ambivalent about assigning hybrid status to people who don’t have skins that make it very evident they’re some kind of animal/mob cross, but i do very much like wings and i think given grian’s history of bird-related pranks and fondness for flying, i can see where it came from... i’ve seen some of the elytra designs for all the hermits, though, and i loooove them, they’re so good. very fond.
the watchers have shown up in last life since evo (which i have now watched in its entirety; taurtis my beloved...), btw - watch inthelittlewood’s pov for more. they’re pretty unequivocally evil in that. and, i’d argue, they’re also pretty evil in evo. the only reason it gets overlooked is that like... grian is almost worse behaved lmaooo.
...someone remind me at some point, when i’m drowning in work a little less, to write a meta post about how c!grian is, in fact, kind of a Bad Person. especially in evo, where he kills and explodes and burns and traps and teases remorselessly, and generally without asking permission, and often taking it just a few feet over the too far line. and how that makes him more interesting to me, rather than less, this man who’s natural inclination is chaos and violence and explosions and an absence of natively-felt empathy, very carefully reining himself in for the sake of his friends, because he was told to, because they asked him to, because he cares about them and wants to be liked and accepted. and also makes me want to use him as the world’s featheriest football even more, rip.
(also my dms are always open, as a general statement!! i know like... nobody in this fandom, it’s like me and one poor fucker i’ve dragged in after me, please come talk to me about shit. but also please bear in mind, depending on your age, that i am Very Much over 18, and that this blog / myself is intermittently 18+ in the nsfw sense.)

I re-read the whole academic drama around Irish-Americans and NINA policies, because it was relevant for something I'm working on and I'd forgotten some of the details.
A relatively conservative professor wrote an article in the early 2000s arguing that the Irish-American cultural memory of NINA policies ("No Irish Need Apply" restrictions on both Irish immigrants and Irish-Americans, mainly in the 19th century but persisting in some places into the 20th) is hugely overblown, with the implication that anti-Irish prejudice in the US at the time was not really that big a deal in general.
It struck me as a bit odd for a conservative professor to pull this argument when the usual approach is to use the history of anti-Irish policies to deny very contemporary racism experienced by people of color or blame its victims. I'd expect "Irish-Americans are over-exaggerating their historical oppression because they want to frame themselves as oppressed people despite being the beneficiaries of modern whiteness" from progressives more, tbh (since that is indeed an issue!).
On top of that, some elements of the author's conduct can only be described as extremely unprofessional, as when he speculates that Irish-Americans collectively remember a history that either never happened or was extremely limited in its effects because of ... uhhh drunkenly imagining it, basically (no obnoxious stereotypes there, no sirree!). Another scholar described trying to talk to him about the issue, since he (Scholar 2) had seen considerable evidence to the contrary, and the author shrugged him off as a defensive Irish-American (Scholar 2 noted that he is neither Irish nor US American).
Despite the issues, this interpretation gained fairly broad academic acceptance, though with some reservations (and in other cases, quiet disbelief). But back around 2015, Rebecca Fried (who I believe was a middle school student at the time) ran over the whole thing and found it deeply puzzling, since she'd seen very considerable evidence of NINA policies in digital archives.
She ended up putting together a very polite rebuttal in which she pointed out that these kinds of documents often don't survive, as Scholar 1 undoubtedly knew, so the dozens of them that she did find likely represented a real and widespread phenomenon in the United States rather than drunken exaggeration that allowed Irish-Americans to manufacture solidarity without much cause and therefore justify the evils of ... unionizing.
(Yeah, the original article is a lot.)
The original author responded in the comments on coverage of her article, which was published by the same journal as his own (an Oxford one, I think). His response was predictably condescending and sneering, and also very nitpicky—basically he argued that he'd been talking about a very specific iteration of the NINA issue, but since his explanation of why the Irish-American community would make this grand mistake was so sweeping and obnoxious, and also even his approach to the specific situation he claimed to be addressing was clearly flawed and imprecise (in my opinion, obviously not claiming to be unbiased here).
But apart from the weird mix of the blatant anti-labor rights stuff and the stereotypes about Irish and Irish-American people and the lack of rigor and consistency in the focus, it was also interesting to see how something so clearly flawed and partial could not only pass muster but gain widespread acceptance despite considerable evidence to the contrary along with the records of even so large and assimilated a group as Irish-Americans. This isn't ancient history, it al went down less than 10 years ago.

@fishwantmewomenfearme
[TL;DR: Tbh there’s some iffy stuff in lotr and I won’t defend it, but that has nothing to do with his interest in languages, history, and folklore. Tolkien denounced white supremacy and antisemitism in 1938 when a German publishing house wanted to translate his book. I compared that to how Taylor Swift handled her own white-supremacist fans in 2009-2019.]
I'm not going to be the guy to stand up and say that Tolkien's works are totally free of racist and antisemitic undertones, because that would be incorrect (sad to say, but facts are facts). Still, I think that the fuck-off letter he wrote to a German publisher in 1983 when they asked him to provide documentation of his Aryan heritage puts him at LEAST one step above Taylor Swift, as low as that bar is.
Actually, that’s a pretty good comparison. Taylor Swift and Tolkien both have qualities that make white supremacists fawn over them. Taylor, because she’s an “Aryan queen” or whatever bullshit, and Tolkien because he, as you mentioned, is “into german history and language” and weaves a lot of northern European mythology into his works. So they both had/have white supremacist fans. How should one handle this? Tolkien wrote:
"I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people. My great-great-grandfather came to England in the eighteenth century from Germany: the main part of my descent is therefore purely English, and I am an English subject — which should be sufficient. I have been accustomed, nonetheless, to regard my German name with pride, and continued to do so throughout the period of the late regrettable war, in which I served in the English army. I cannot, however, forbear to comment that if impertinent and irrelevant inquiries of this sort are to become the rule in matters of literature, then the time is not far distant when a German name will no longer be a source of pride. Your enquiry is doubtless made in order to comply with the laws of your own country, but that this should be held to apply to the subjects of another state would be improper, even if it had (as it has not) any bearing whatsoever on the merits of my work or its sustainability for publication, of which you appear to have satisfied yourselves without reference to my Abstammung."
[emphasis mine]
This letter alone isn’t the kind of “hey FUCK off” I would have preferred, but it’s at least a comfort that Tolkien stated outright that he thought Aryan purity and anti-semitism was, at the very least, nonsense, and that the rise of white supremacy in Germany was making him actively lose pride in his German heritage. There is also documentation that he was less diplomatic in private, telling his publisher that he despised the Nazi “race-doctrine” and found it “wholly pernicious and unscientific.”
Comparatively, Swift posed with Swastika Guy in 2009. It almost immediately went public, but the only comment made was by her publicist, who only said that “She doesn't know who this guy is and she didn't realize what was on his shirt.” Swift then became an alt-right icon in 2016, and didn’t comment on that until 2019, when she finally said “white supremacy is repulsive” with her whole chest, but brushed off criticism that she should have said so 4-10 years earlier. (I'm bringing up Swift not to make Tolkien look better, but because she’s the first person I could think of who was in a similar situation of suddenly encountering white supremacist fans.)
Once again, that’s a LOW bar, but I think it’s important to discuss how a person’s interests and characteristics (an interest in germanic history/mythology/languages for Tolkien, aesthetically appealing to Nazi beauty ideals for Swift) are not in themselves inherently racist or an indication of racism, but they do attract racists, and how these figures should respond to that attention. (Quickly and with strong language, in my opinion, which neither Tolkien or Swift managed to do, although I personally believe Tolkien gets more credit for saying what he did in the pre-internet era and while there were out-and-proud nazi sympathizers in Engand before Britain went to war with Germany.)
Anyway, my intention here isn’t to shield Tolkien from all criticism, because it’s really important to be critical of racism and antisemitism even in the works we love. But I do have an issue with you throwing these tags up so casually in the notes of a post where I was simply talking about celebrating Tolkien’s use of Old English, Old Norse, and germanic words and names. If you start to draw a direct line between studying linguistics, history, and mythology to being a white supremacist, you should possibly pause and reflect.
Once again, there are elements in Tolkien’s works that can and should be criticized and analyzed for racism and antisemitism, but his playful use of language and his merit as an academic and linguist are not it. Thank you for engaging with my post, however. It’s given me a chance to offer people potentially new information and encouraged fans of Tolkien and the fantasy genre to look at these important but difficult topics with care.
If anyone takes issue with any of the above points, I am open to hearing them. My goal is not to fight, but to talk, listen, learn, and grow in understanding.

Hiiiii😚 i wanna request for a ship with txt, enhypen and bts, thank you soo much for taking the time to do this!☺ I hope you have a good day, stay healthy and take care for yourself🤗
INFP-T | enneagram type 4 | sun: Sagittarius, moon: Cancer | Hate studying anything except English | Competitive when it comes to things I love and am passionate about | Like creative writing and interior designing(basically architecture) | Novels over movies | Even if i watch movies its either action or angst-drama, and always like the evil characters more than the good ones because I'm able to sort of understand why they do what they do, I believe everything has a reason, and every action is a result of something | I also believe in soulmates, love at first sight and all sorts of tropes like these | Obsessed with Greek and Roman mythology and ancient Egypt and just in general medieval eras | Love taking polaroid pictures and traveling | Aesthetic all the way, love being in the nature | I love fairylights and abstract paintings and night walks and stargazing | Love sad things | I'm sensitive to smell and don't like artificial scents | I like going to libraries and museums and cathedrals and old medieval buildings, beaches also and other nature aesthetic places | Always observing little details about everything that other people fail to notice | Easily scared or startled | Have huge trust issues and very sensitive | Have very few friends and am loyal before anything | I'm moved by little things and don't really like much of fancy dates, I like it simple and my favorite would be walk along the beach at night | Am very open-minded and wise but no one's really aware of that | Like disturbing people and then giving puppy eyes | Shy at first but when you get close with me I'm very loud, talkative, playful and annoyingly funny and weird | Just realized it yesterday that i tend to 'huh' a Lot | Clingy with people I am very close to(might even jump and koala hug them tbh) | Everyone's comfort pillar | Very expressive with words and actions | CLUMSY(I hit or bump into something at least once a day) | Love eating (taking advantage of my never getting fat genes lol) but am sort of quite picky | 5'2 - 157cm and I like tall people but I have no problem connecting with people on the shorter side of the height spectrum | Baby voice and baby face | side bangs and dark brown short almost straight hair which reaches just 4cms above the shoulders | Big chocolate brown eyes | Have slightly honey tanned skin | I'm a crybaby too, like if someone I love or care a lot about is getting scolded for whatever reason or they are sad or something then I tend to cry immediately. And while watching or reading sad things too | I do random sounds or actions too and I noticed recently I go 'huh' and 'uh' all the time | sometimes I don't even understand myself like a few days back I was wearing a black sock on my left foot and a white one on my right and then i forgot that i wore mismatched socks so when I noticed it after a while I got fascinated for literally no reason then within seconds i forgot about it again and then when it came to my notice again i got fascinated again and this went on the whole day lmao | My fashion style leans towards boho chic/bohemian and casual | And prefer bare face over makeup and converse over other footwear and dusk(sunset) over dawn(sunrise) but in the album I like dawn ver more🤭 | I love spicy and sour food and have a high tolerance of spice | And my love languages are acts of service>physical touch>quality time>words of affirmation.
