When Angel went on their business trip, David realised for the first time just how much they meant to him, and the importance of their presence in his life.

Although at that point they’d only recently moved in together, their routine felt so normalised to him that he forgot how he used to be when he lived with Asher in that small apartment.

The morning after he sent them off at the airport, he woke up to silence. It felt so wrong. The space next to him on the bed was cold, and the room felt dark somehow. He wasn’t bombarded with kisses and pleas to stay in bed despite it being a weekend, and he didn’t feel the warmth of their body against his where Angel would always be attached to him, clinging to him like a backpack.

He walked to the kitchen. The tiles felt cooler than usual. The room was silent. He made two servings of pancakes before he realised he didn’t need to. One of them already had whipped cream and sprinkles on top, just as Angel had always liked it.

He cursed at himself. This wasn’t helping at all.

The house was so empty, so quiet, so dark. He had no reason to open his mouth and talk to anyone.

He was alone.

He missed Angel.

He counted down the days until the nightmare would end, and he’d have his reason for living back in his arms again.

It’s time for some mindless rambling about the ghosts that haunt my fire house. One of them we all know who it is: he was a firefighter here, among the first group of firefighters to go from volunteer to paid when the department switched from a volunteer department to a paid department. He was a fun loving jokester who everyone loved with a kind soul- though he died a year before I was hired while doing off duty community service. I never met him, but I’ve come to know him through stories and a little bit through sharing a fire house with his ghost. He’s fun ghost. A kind ghost. He makes lights flicker and taps on walls in the wee hours of the night. And when you address him and say “hey man, I’m tired. It’s been a long day. I want to sleep. Could you please cut it out.” The tapping stops and he leaves you alone for the night. He is here because he wants to be. He comes to hang out and mess with the friends he left behind, and the friends he never got to make in this life.

And then there’s the other ghost. They are older and have been here for a long time. No one knows who they are or why they are here. Some people don’t even know they exist. Some people attribute all of the ghost like activity to the previously mentioned firefighter. But when you spend enough nights here you learn the difference between the two. You feel the difference. This other ghost- they linger in the shadows, they hide in the corner of your eye, you feel them behind you when you walk not so alone down the hallway. You feel them in the uneasy prickling of the hairs on the back of your neck. And that is what they are: uneasy. They pace the empty halls and sometimes they don’t do it quietly. You can hear heavy boots walking down the hallway outside your door. You chalk it up to your partner getting up for something in the night, but then in the morning you talk to eachother only to discover neither of you got up. And you certainly didn’t have your boots on.
