This is why my general feelings of "wow, they fucked up" has very little to do with how much I was personally enjoying BuckTommy. They had something really groundbreaking and important and EVEN IF it was always intended to be a plot device, there are ways to exit a plot device without leaving the characters and your audience feeling disrespected, and delivering the disrespect via such harmful stereotypes. Like, ngl, I was SHOCKED that the "gay firefighter show" went with those tropes.
I dont trust the fans applauding the ep saying it was the best ep because it wasn't a great ep, it was fine (I half expect Jason from FFC to make fun of the ep/show again) but also when you have queer viewers saying this, it definitely means you fucked up.

The 2010s Black Barbie Look
a deep dive on one of my fav sub styles ever. this aesthetic takes from the 2010s baddie, swag movement, and a lingering hyperfemininity from the 2000s that soon was obliterated by most brands a few years later. i’ve always been into this look as i was the intended audience. a teenage black girl in high school when this look took off.
the vibe ❤︎︎
“everyone was a barb. victoria’s secret was the go to place to shop on fridays after school. you were the cool girl if you had more than four beauty rush glosses. the scent of love spell filled your bedroom.”

pink of course! very girly and femme. but a much wider range of shades vs today. there was a huge boom in neons too. (this tracks back to the return of the 80s/90s fashion elements) (i remember having this lime green PINK quarter zip that i loved so so much). also gray was a super popular accent color for fashion and interior. zebra print decor was a staple (seen in aaliyahjay’s and ellabandz’ bedrooms) because vs pink was so big, the white on hot pink polka dot pattern was seen everywhere from clothing to needing to girls decorating their rooms with VS PINK bags.

"the michael kandel translation of "the witcher" short story can't hurt you!!"
the michael kandel translation of "the witcher" short story:
#WE HERE IN K L O T H S T U R#the witcher books#[ Nobody liked that. ]#i like how the first two 'main' translations (like published for mass market circulation ones i mean)#were like 'no we can't call it a strzyga... no no...'#(maybe like: 'the english readers won't understand...')#and then when the game and book hit (i.e. both beginning with geralt fighting the striga)#everyone was like 'whoa that striga was really cool'#idk idk enough about it yet to say anything definitively#but my experience and all the other reviews and experiences i've read#from other anglophone readers with no prior exposure to polish or broader slavic myth or culture#has been just like: 'whoa i never knew about that... that's really unique and cool'#and on the flip side. originally witcher gained popularity in part because of the familiarity of the fairy tale#and so despite that witcher in general takes a lot of everything from across europe#if i may just summarize it really obtusely and without taking the precaution of nuance and all#although the first two translations were very much intended to feature polish writers and writing#in the way of the actual translation it feels like they tried to diminish its 'polishness' for the english reader#like for example in chosen by fate itself there are no diacritics (though idk maybe that was a lack of capability of the printing press)#it FEELS like that i'm not saying it was intentional but#for example when you don't say 'leshies' and instead say 'bugbears' that feels like diminishing it#but then later when the witcher's quote-unquote 'polishness' is allowed to come through clearer#then it actually is part of why english audiences were like whoa this is interesting i like it :)#you know real-life events are stories too. and i feel like this is a story with a good moral: 'be yourself'#this is also one of the prime subjects where i disagree with sapkowski lol#because re: 'death of the author' theory type stuff. authors cannot control how their works are interpreted by their audiences#works get interpreted on their own fortunately or unfortunately#so though i think it would be misled to engage with the witcher as if its ONLY good quality is its 'polishness'#i think that also it should be acknowledged how its unique take on culture made it appealing to both domestic and foreign audiences#i think where the problem lies is when we believe it can't be both polish and a blend of multiple cultures and traditions#because like yeah. author is an arthurian weeb

This reminds me of a video I watched by Rachel Oates, called 'How much does intent matter in Art?' that covers this nicely. She discusses a theory I learned about in Media studies called 'the medium is the message', by Marshall McLuhan, which, suggests, to put simply, that art or media (including books) are encoded with messages, and views, even if you don't realise it, and when the audience consumes them, they decode it, and perceive it. While she doesn't mention SJM or her books, applying the theory to poetry to try and educate people about intention and outcome in art.
Rachel basically explains (better than me, since I'll keep it short for brevity) that if an artist, of any kind, hones and utilises the techniques and skills that come with their craft well, then the audience perceives the message as intended. However, if they utilise their techniques poorly, then the audience will intemperate a different message.
You can still like it, enjoy it, or say you personally think it's really good, because art is inherently subjective, but searching for techniques and their utilisation in art is how a critique critiques them. It's why critique review and audience review of movies and tv shows differ. A critique rates it based on cinematography, writing, directing, and a other factors that may very depending on if it's a tv show, live action animation, etc. Meanwhile audiences rate it on entertainment, relatability, and how impactful it is, etc.
Of course, objective critiques can be argued, with evidence. One person could take a quote from any of the ACOTAR books and use it to argue why ACOTAR is a feminist story, while someone else could take a different, or even the same quote, and argue otherwise, with the artist's intention becoming irrelevant.
Rachel, also explains, art needs to be able to stand on it's own, without needing background about the artist or other context, for it to have meaning or to affect people, to which I agree. Especially in this context.
Take the hike scene. SJM intended it for it to be therapeutic, and healing for Nesta, while others, myself included, argue that it was poorly written at best, and example of abuse at worst. Often, people use SJM's real life hike to argue this point. However, if that context is needed for the scene to stand, then it was't well executed. At best it show's SJM's lack of skill, and usage of structure, plot and techniques, with a lack of true understanding of depression, and the state of mind people are in when they consider taking their own life, and at worst, it shows a very dangerous mindset surrounding the aforementioned subjects.
The point Rachel ultimately makes, is that intention doesn't matter if art, including literature, is offensive, or harmful.
If SJM failed to send the feminist message her books were advertised for having, then her intent doesn't amount to much. If someone is offended by your art, or criticises it for the way it handles certain subject matter, then that reflects a lack of skill on the author's part, at best. At worst, it reflects dangerous ideals and mindsets.
It's also important to understand that many people have different upbringings, and life experiences, which is another reason that there are such different interpretations of art. Every character in her books have said or done things worthy of criticism, some more than others. SJM has said, done and written things that need to be criticised, her handling of race, colonisation and slavery, to name a couple, outside of just how she botched feminism and abuse.
There are victims who relate to Feyre, Mor, Rhys, etc. There are victims who relate more to Nesta, Tamlin, Eris, etc. There are victims who condemn SJM's books and characters in their entirety. There are people, who aren't victims, that relate to Azriel, Emerie, Elain, tc. There are people, who aren't victims, that relate to Viviane, Tarquin, Gwyn, etc. There are people, who aren't victims, that condemn SJM and her writing in their entirety.
However, if SJM is called out for offending people, be it marginalised communities, women in general, or victims, then it's worth apologising, reevaluating why and trying to improve her craft to prevent doing so again. Also, editors and sensitivity readers wouldn't go amis, especially in stories that try to use themes of slavery, racial and gendered discrimination.
To wrap this up, SJM's intent doesn't matter. If people are offended, she needs to take accountability, apologise, and try to do better next time. Given her consistent failure to use incorporate race and slavery into her books in a way that handles the topics with the respect they deserve, I'd say she's failed on all three fronts there. In fact, it become clear that racial and queer representation are half-assed just to give her plausible deniability. If people like it, she can take the credit, if not she can deny it.
Ultimately, art is subjective. Just because she receives criticism, doesn't mean you have to hate it. You're free to have your opinions, but don't be rude, cruel, or otherwise bully others for theirs.
If you're going to try have a discussion with me about these books then I need you to bare in mind that I base absolutely none of my opinions or analyses on SJMs intentions
I have 0 faith that that woman even recognizes the absolutely horrid things she has written nevermind that she intends to actually go into much depth with any of it (Rhysand's abuse, the IC dynamics, the terrible ruling system, retcon retcon retcon for days, the Illyrians, Nesta etc). And people can say that's misogynistic if they want, I do not care. She has shown absolutely no evidence that she doesn't have her head completely encased by the Inner Circles asses or that that and her inability to self insert hasn't completely skewed the way she writes this series so sue me. I don't even believe she fully understands the characters she has written, it's as if she has written so much retconning and gaslighting behaviour in this story that she's somehow managed to gaslight herself at this stage
So anyway my opinions and my interpretations of the characters are based on their actions in the text not what SJM intended for them to convey or whatever bullshit she has the IC spout and if that's what you like to follow that's fine but go be a sheep somewhere else because I won't engage with it I'm sorry (not really)

so I read this fic, this fic, and this fic lol and it totally melted my brain and then I started thinking and this happened lol.
-
Carol hasn’t had a family get together since December of ‘83 and she hasn’t talked to Steve longer. Which would make this get together very odd. Carol honestly wouldn’t have gone if her mother hadn’t made her. She’s fuming because not only is she forced to be here she’s forced to watch Steve be happy, it’s not like she doesn’t want him to be happy it’s just very upsetting to see him be happy without her or Tommy. So instead of walking up to her cousin and ex friend to just talk she sits in her chair and glares at him.
-
When Steve had been informed about the get together he internally grimaces, thankfully he didn’t have to listen to his parents talk for long since he had work. Which he then could bitch to Robin about. “How can a family reunion be that terrible?” Robin questions, popping a piece of candy in her mouth. Steve groans and lifts his head slightly staring at Robin. He’s surprised she hasn’t caught on yet, unless,
“wait you don’t know?” Steve lifts his head up fully staring unblinkly at robin trying to figure out if she is joking or not.
“uhhh no I do not know, but do tell.” She gets this giddy look in her eyes pushing the box of candy off the counter he wrinkles his nose knowing he’s going to have to clean it up later since Robin hates sweeping.
“It’s hard to explain,” Steve starts knowing damn well it’s not hard to explain quit the opposite really. Not that hard to tell his best friend that his old friend is actually his cousin. “Well actually it’s not that hard just difficult- nope still not that right wording-“
“Steve it’s alright if you don’t want to tell me.” Robin smiles at him reassuringly.
“carol’s my cousin.” He mumbles out in a rush. He immediately clocks when robins face goes from confusion to shock.
“Perkins?” Steve nods.
“if you want I could come, be some support or Eddie could come too, maybe the get away driver when she comes near.” She starts to ramble her rambling making Steve feel instantly better.
“I think I need to do this alone and my family would immediately think you were my girlfriend.” Steve smiles at her.
“I’m okay being your girlfriend to make you feel better.” Robin rolls her eyes as to say he’s being a dingus.
“aww thanks Robbie.” He coos at her which immediately makes her hit him on the shoulder.
-
Carol has managed to not talk to anybody at this get together. Avoiding meeting Steve’s eyes, she was successful until her aunt(Steve’s mother) decided they needed to resolve their differences. She sees her mother snickering with her. Carol rolls her eyes when Steve sits next to her.
“Y’know I don’t want to be here as much as you do.” He isn’t looking at her when he says this.
“That supposed to make me feel better, because it doesn’t, great to know your only cousin closes to you doesn’t even want to see you.” She rolls her eyes and blows a bubble with her gum.
“right sorry, look I’m sorry for how I left you and Tommy.” Steve still doesn’t look at her when saying this and it pisses her off.
“it’s in the past, past it.” She shrugs, she isn’t past it far from it actually. She wants to shake Steve and ask him why he doesn’t talk to them anymore, to her. Carol hates to admit it but she misses her cousin he was one of her best friends growing up, them both growing up as only children. She didn’t have anyone else sure she had her mom and dad but Steve was her only friend before he met Tommy and she fell for him.
“just know I’m still here if you need me.” Steve taps her shoulder three times like when they were younger then gets up and goes across the room to talk to one of their cousin from out of state.
Carol frowns and goes back to moping.
#Sorry about the way it kind of ends abruptly#implied steddie#steddie#More implied but it’s also the intended audience I guess#I don’t know#steve harrington#carol perkins#robin buckley#stranger things#No I don’t have an essay due tomorrow and instead of working on it I bought a new game and wrote this..no shut up why would you think that?#I’m totally not stressed about the essay hahahah#Sorry about the little rant#Anyways hope you enjoyed!#Also I’m totally not obsessed with Steve#I highly recommended checking out those fics !!#Hopefully it reads right I wrote this in tumblr and It’s late#Oh I almost forgot even though it’s not much it’s very there!#platonic stobin#I love there friendship so much#Okay okay I’m done now

the world is cold and harsh but sometimes i see golden leaves and the way the clouds ripple in the autumn breeze and I remember. I hear a story, a laugh, an excited tirade and I remember. sometimes I see a piece of art you found to be a chore and it touches me to my core and i remember
we are not here for anything but living. make what brings you joy for the joy of making it and toss the rest. be an ameteur and revel in the dissatisfaction. then do it better next time
the world is cold and harsh but your heart is warm. please let me feel it? just a little campfire for the evening.
#whispers in the trees#poetry#i guess#ramblings and poems are similar#gloss might be a better word#this is dedicated to someone i love very much. it isnt *for* you#you are not the intended recipient and audience#but it is dedicated to you#anyways. love you.

Reblogging this review for no particular reason.
Recently Viewed: Willy’s Wonderland
In Willy’s Wonderland, Nicolas Cage plays a badass, taciturn janitor forced to spend the night cleaning a Chuck E. Cheese style family restaurant while battling possessed animatronic mascots—and really, that should tell you everything you need to know about the film’s artistic ambitions and overall quality. Cage has become a genre in and of himself at this point in his career, and he’s embraced his status as a living meme wholeheartedly. Here, he manages to ham it up without uttering a single line of dialogue—an Oscar-worthy achievement in overacting. His unironic commitment to the otherwise underdeveloped role elevates the thinly-written material, more than compensating for the clunky screenplay, cheap visual effects, and lackluster fight choreography. Honestly, his performance probably singlehandedly redeems the entire movie; the character wouldn’t have been nearly as entertaining had he been played by, for example, Sharknado’s Ian Ziering or some other SyFy Channel veteran. Cage simply delivers the perfect blend of zany camp and genuine gravitas; he is the sovereign of schlock, the king of critical flops, the Olivier of box office bombs—a true treasure of trash cinema.
#Willy's Wonderland#Nicolas Cage#Five Night's at Freddy's#FNAF#Matthew Lillard#okay so I lied#there IS a reason I'm reblogging this#I saw the FNAF movie#I was very much not the intended audience#but it seems to be a huge hit with the target demographic#crowd in my theater cheered for every cameo#thunderous applause#didn't even know who any of those streamers were#except for MatPat#against my will I am very familiar with MatPat#felt like such an old fart watching it#but the reference to Scream put a huge grin on my face#Matt Lillard was great#the rest was meh#but glad the fandom is enjoying it#I'll stick with Willy's Wonderland#Halloween#Halloween 2023#Happy Halloween

so maybe the fact that i draw them all the time has completely rotted my head but nahyuta and simon are so narratively similar to one another that the relationship (in any different scenario) just makes a lot of comical sense to me. they're in very similar stages of their life, went through very similar experiences of being puppeted to protect someone who's innocent, and immediately match each other's negative energy within 2 minutes of being in the same courtroom. they are on equal levels of status within the prosecutors office and intelligent and persecutory and condescending and pretentious and would either get along like a house on fire or kill each other within minutes and that wildly entertains me
#like obviously you have the few insults in the trial and compared to a lot of other pairings#its not much. like absolutely not really intended to be a relationship or friendship that particularly interests the audience#beyond rivalry in that instance#but the very quick reactivity is just very potent for imagining further chemistry and thats why it works for me.#i think the point of this post is not meta or any serious speculation on canon but moreso wanting more people to kinda.#think about them and feed into that wildly entertaining factor they have#blackmadhi#ace attorney

i really think we need to embrace death note as a work of children's fiction for a number of reasons, one of which being that it's quite simplistic in its morality because it needed to be comprehensible to twelve year olds
#also i feel very strongly this informs light's character#he kind of acts like a kid#including u know his tantrums and his inability to fully understand the people around him#bc he needs to be relatable to 12 year olds#idk he never felt older to me even when he was 23#he always felt like he was one of my peers u know#(it was marketed for older teens overseas but it was written for kids#you can look at the 2003 demographics of shounen jump to confirm this#or that one interview in htr13#the NA market esp in 2003 was very very scared of giving dark or serious material to children so most manga is marketed to an older audienc#than it was intended for#which tbh i think explains a lot of the goofiness people are kind of weird about when they read manga#like it's not a quality of japanese media so much as its a quality of children's lit being incorrectly labelled as adult and/or teen lit)

This is a very specific brainrot BUT for while I've been thinking what would Steve's dnd playing style would be and i think d20's Zac Oyama is the closest, because Zac starts with the himbo characters and I feel like both Gorgug and Rick are pretty good for beginners because everytime Steve wouldn't get something it could be just blamed on character's intelligence and insight (also Steve Harrington is so Ricky Matsui coded and I feel like he would have so much fun playing him) but Zac also plays snarky characters the most recent one being Pib and I love the idea that the more comfortable with dnd Steve would become, the more snarky and bitchy his characters get
#this is my d20 stranger things brainrot#also i think fabian seacaster is Eddie trying to play rich jock boy bc Fabian is very theatrical and loud and i feel like that's#an eddie coded character he has so much fun with him and he says that he created him to play tribute to steve just to mess with him#steve always acts annoyed that 'he's not like that!' but is secretly very amused and obvs loves fabian bc who the fuck wouldn't#also eddie created him for will's dm time#stranger things#dimension 20#steve harrington#steddie#<- not present but intended audience for this thought

hope people chill out soon, your take was immaculate and actually the reason I followed you initially bc i am an adult who likes cartoons and little kid shows but also doesn't get in internet fights about them and thinks adults who do are... wild, for lack of a better term..
but!!! now I wanna know about your comic (???maybe its a comic not sure) that you've mentioned, I couldn't find a tag to search but do you mind sharing about it? tysm either way have a good one
hi nonnie!! first of all ty for the well wishes and compliments! i'm sure once all the jokes and the offense die down, people will be relatively normal again... i hope.. lets get into the meat of the ask under the cut
EDIT: this got long so if u just want the basic gist, go to the very end!
soooo my girlfriend @pokemonleague and i decided back in...2018? to make spidersonas due to our love of comics and the movie into the spiderverse, but since we're nerds that totally span out of control. it went from a fan rp with several spider-man themed characters to a completely original concept with new characters, our own setting, power system-- the works. it is about superheroes, so it might not be your thing. okay so first backstory stuff
it used to be called the phillyverse and if u go into the tag u might find some old art, but its all extremely outdated (and bad. im not the bessst artist). after some delegation we decided to start making it a comic (we spent YEARS debating it) and named the project around last year. its uh called Show Your Spine!
I'm the worst at describing things but we have like 3 whole seasons entirely plotted out so I can pull somethin like a pitch together: while the vigilantism is a core aspect, with the main overarching plot being a group of unlikely heroes, old and new banding together to stop their city from being overrun by the mob, supervillains, and other threats. it's really about finding love and community in a city at war and finding the strength to protect and nourish it. all the while unlearning all the shit the last generations have taught us, to stop us from perpetuating the cycle of hate... while also beating the shit outta some baddies
in short its abt cringe-fail women doing cringe-fail things lmaoo. its a like a superhero-action-soap opera taking place in the retro-futuristic city of Chesire Grove, new jersey.
in this world, there's people with powers called Augments, who are just like you and me but due to changes in their DNA due were born with the ability to manifest different abilities (think mutants or metahumans). the tension between augments and humans is a little.. high right now, but allegedly better than they've ever been before. It's a newish era of human-augment relations, for better or worse.
we have an ensemble cast, and we intend on taking the main characters from the ages of 16 to eventually 25. the characters are aging in real-time.
OKAY PLOT TIME: The first few arcs focus on a delinquent teenage girl, Leo, trying to find a cure for one of her best friends who has fallen ill after trying a new drug, by all means necessary. during her quest for it, she meets the elusive newer vigilante Spitfire, who had saved her once before. Despite a rocky start, the two start a mentor-mentee type thing, in hope that the other can help them find what they're looking for. For Leo, she's looking for info on the man who made the drug that's been killing people, desperate to make him reverse engineer it. For Spitfire, they're looking for Chesire Grove's longest-running protector: Nightingale, who has suddenly gone missing. Spitfire's a bit new in town but lucky for them, the kid knows the city like the back of their hand.
At the same time, a sheltered augment teen's life is changing, as her overly protective father has finally realized that keeping her inside wasn't protecting her at all. freshly enrolled in a school for STEM students, Bobbi (also known by his nickname Retro) has to learn how to navigate the world for the first time and solve the full mystery of her past, all while her powers are on the fritz.
there's so much to this world, and we're so excited to share it with everyone!! i tried to be pretty vague cause of spoilers, and like i said, bad with words
#show your spine!#long post#webcomics#oh! one more thing#i know ppl r tired of media with kids. me too#not that its bad im just 22#the characters have literally grown with us and to reflect that they uh literally grow with the audience#this is a loooong comic and by the end of it the teen characters are in their mid twenties#and the adult main characters are also just as important to the plot as well. because of that a subject matter SYS is pointed YA audiencesl#if u wanna know anymore#please lemme know because i wanna talk about it so bad#SyS is very much looking at superheroes from the lense of marginalized pp#*ppl much like they were intended to be#n for ppl who like it short n sweet its batfam meets x-men but theyre black gay and the worst people you know

Honestly part of the reason I didn't want to give WHA a chance despite its beautiful art and the amount of ppl I respect who are into it was bcuz I was like "oh it's about like ten year old girls..... ok..... I'm not really interested in kids media anymore but I'm glad everyone is having fun" and then I read it and was like. Oh. There's a reason this is marketed as seinen manga instead of shounen. And now I find myself in the weird position where I do not usually seek out media with children protagonists these days but I love WHA, but am more or less neutral about (/kind of positive but not all that invested in) Adult Men ship that tumblr loves (Qifrey/Olruggio) while deeply invested in Coco/Agott and the really insane Coco & Tartah & [REDACTED] drama
#i'm not sure i would show wha to kids the same age as the girls#this feels very much like media about kids for adults#like maybe when they're a bit older (high school age) i'd be like Yeah Go For It#obligatory Not That There Is Anything Wrong With Media Intended For Younger Audiences.#i just am not that audience#wha blogging

It is very much Teen Wolf. I enjoyed it.
#I mean that it is teen wolf in the sense that it has both tw's flaws and charms#fireproof shorts and scenes just slightly too campy to take seriously#retcons and 2 things that definitely did not track with canon but also. fireproof shorts and scallison#and argent finally got to call someone motherfucker#I think letting them swear worked really well#and I think given the intended audience (mostly people who had only seen a bit of tw) it did its job very well#working with pretty much only things from s4 and earlier they made a pretty coherent and very entertaining movie#and so what if it is not a cinematic masterpiece. the purpose of movies is to entertain#teen wolf#teen wolf movie#teen wolf the movie#teen wolf: the movie#teen wolf spoilers#teen wolf movie spoilers#anon asks
