Everything in your life has just been going wrong. Or at least it’s felt that way. Simple everyday tasks have grown increasingly difficult to do and every waking moment is it’s own battle. You’ve had no contact with the outside world in who knows how long, not even your own boyfriend. It just seems as though nobody cares and that, along with everything else is slowly destroying you.
Only leaving your bed to use the bathroom and grab another bag of chips that will eventually be thrown to the side uneaten, has been how you’ve been living for awhile now. You’re filled with this overwhelming feeling of despair and it just won’t go away. At war with your own mind, and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of this tunnel. Just a dead end.

Chris lays on the couch, scrolling through Instagram while hoping that you’ll answer one of his million texts. He knows you’re pushing him away but he can’t figure out why. What did he do wrong? You’re his first girlfriend and he’s so afraid to loose you but he doesn’t know what’s wrong or what to do.
“Me and Nick are going to McDonald’s if you want to bring y/n,” Matt calls as he grabs his keys off the counter.
“No that’s ok, I don’t think she’d want to” Chris reply’s, not looking up from his phone.
“But I thought she loves McDonald’s? I haven’t heard from her in awhile, how’s she doing?” Matt asks, his voice laced with concern.
“I wouldn’t know” Chris mumbles, clearly hurt.
Every once in awhile you kind of disappear but you’ve never done it for this long, let along not talking to Chris at all.
“Did you guys break up?” Matt asks gently as he sits by Chris on the couch.
“No but she ghosted me” Chris starts, pressing his palms into his eyes. “She’s completely disappeared off of social media, and never answers my texts or calls even when it says she’s active.”
Worry is painted across Matt’s features as he watches his brother fight off tears.
“Chris I think you should go check up on her. Y/n wouldn’t do this without a really good reason and I think she’s really struggling right now. I’ll bring you on the way to McDonald’s ok?”
Chris never thought about that fact you might not be doing well, he was more concerned about you ignoring him.

Right now, all you need is Chris and he doesn’t plan on leaving anytime soon.

It is in these quiet moments that Orm's sincere attempts to integrate into your world were most apparent. And not only did his efforts shine, but so did the love between you.
You look at him, a fond smile playing on your lips.
His brows are furrowed in deep concentration, and his unruly blond hair nearly reaches his nose now. His piercing blue eyes are focused on the small kitchen knife and the bell pepper he is meticulously slicing. The knife seems almost comically small in his large hands, and he grips it with such strength that you are surprised it hasn't broken yet.
It is somewhat amusing, considering how skilled he is with his trident compared to the struggle he faces just holding the knife properly.
"Because we're going to fry it, sweetheart," you explain gently, appreciating his efforts to learn. "Cutting the vegetables into smaller pieces helps them cook more evenly and quickly."
Orm nods slowly, processing the information. He glances at you, his expression a mix of determination and puzzlement. "Fry… that means to cook them in hot oil, right?"
"Exactly," you confirm, guiding him through the process. "It gives them a nice texture and flavour."
As he resumes cutting the bell pepper, pleased with your answer, you can't help but admire his dedication.

When he is done with the paprika, Orm hands you the bowl, his eyes meeting yours with a look of accomplishment. You take it from him with a grateful smile.
"Thanks," you say, putting the bowl away so you can use it for cooking later. "Can you cut the onions, love?" you ask, gesturing towards the small pile of onions on the counter.
His puzzled expression tells you he isn't sure which vegetable you mean, so you point at them and specify. "You have to peel them—the brown skin has to go. Then, dice the white part in small pieces."
Orm nods and grabs an onion, examining it closely before starting to peel. You watch as he works, his large hands moving slowly and carefully. It is kind of cute - the way he approaches this simple task with such determination.
He peels away the first layer, the dry, flaky skin falling away to reveal the smooth white beneath. As he begins to slice, his concentration deepens, his brows furrowing just as they had with the bell pepper.
After a few cuts, however, you hear him mutter a curse under his breath. Glancing over, you see him blinking rapidly, his eyes beginning to water.
Orm wipes his arm over his eyes, confusion etched on his face. "Why do my eyes hurt?" he asks, blinking more frequently now. Before you can warn him, he uses the same hand he had just cut the onion with to rub his eyes.
"Orm, no—" you start, but it is too late.
His eyes widen in pain, and he quickly withdraws his hand, the irritation clearly intensifying. Tears stream down his cheeks, not from emotion but from the sharp sting of the onions.

Orm's expression darkens slightly, a mix of frustration and embarrassment, his brows knitting together in a grumpy frown. "This is ridiculous," he mutters, his pride clearly stung, but your laughter only intensifies.
Acting a bit condescending, you pat his cheek. "It's okay, sweetie. Onions can be tricky. Maybe next time I'll handle them - we'll find another battle for the fine Atlantean warrior."
His eyes flash with a mix of frustration and something deeper. Before you can react, he roughly presses you against the counter, his grip firm but not painful.

I have often struggled and grappled a lot with the concept of my practice being able to co-exist with my disabilities. I have been practising witchcraft since before I was made aware of my disability, but my disability sure made themselves aware throughout my practice.
From being unable to get up, plan or do Anything for major events and days, to the simple mundane task of going up to my altar and saying thanks to all my spirits. Every single task was dictated or rather, negated by my disability and my inability to function or do anything.
The only discourse for the same, is a persistent reminder of, "meditate everyday only then are you a witch," "you cannot be a witch unless you have a daily routine and do something everyday" and the list just goes on.
When will we have a collective talk about how such ideas are rooted in sheer ableism and the capitalistic idea of constantly working and being active? Rest is objectively a part of the cycle of nature, periods where we flourish and are active and others when we rest.
Why are we not allowed to extend the same to our bodies and our spirit?
And this is not to say that all spirits and deities you will be working with, will be okay with you vanishing for months on end. Unfortunately promises and oaths made to the spirits do not follow the same rules for disabilites. There are deities and your spirit team that might excuse you and give you that time, but not every spirit you make a contract or contact with are obligared for the same. They are not obligated to stay or do anything in the period that they are not being fed or given something in return. And that is okay. That is why we bite how much we can chew.
But that is in very specific situations, with very specific spirits. You are not ruining yourself or your practice by not being active for a week or for months or hell, even years.
Your disability does not make your practice "armchair witchcraft" (i really bloody hate that phrase).
You are allowed to take breaks. You are allowed to come back later. You are allowed to mourn being unable to practice when you want to. And you are allowed to ask for grace and time from your spirit team and deities.
Your practice is your own and it is horrifying how norms are policed by non-disabled, able-bodied and neurotypical witches for what they feel entitled to.
If you are one of them, clearly, this space and post are not for you. If you do not understand how people go months and years away from their practice, then this is also clearly not for you.
I want to talk more about what can be done during the major periods of breaks, and what not to do. This is not to throw shade at the posts that talk about - pulling 1 card from your bed because sometimes even the energy for that is lacking. (and that is for future posts)
We are disabled. We have needs. We will take up space. We matter.
And a special fuck you for the people who believe that taking medications will "hamper" your intuition.

I get a lot of curious people wondering what my day to day life is like. Wondering why it differs from a low support needs person. I would like to preface by saying that my support needs themselves although are medium support needs, my needs fluctuate depending on my catatonia, mental health, physical health, etc. My support needs are complex. Please keep in mind that my support needs are on the low end of medium support needs. I will be answering some questions as well at the end.
Everyday looks different. Most days I’m trapped in bed for the majority of the day, some days I’m able to get up and walk around or go places. But, Here’s what a more typical day looks like for me at the moment.
I wake up, and lay in bed for a few hours, I usually scroll through tumblr, TikTok, or discord. I eventually remember to take my medication, and I take it in bed. I am almost completely independent with medication. I eventually get a pain reminder and eventually get up to use the bathroom and try and start my day if I’m not experiencing catatonia at that moment. I usually experience catatonia in the afternoon because I need to start tasks and so I freeze up so getting up to use the bathroom or start my day is very hard and usually takes me hours.
I then come back to bed and lay back down for a few hours. Later into the afternoon, I eventually wonder downstairs and bother my mother. She eventually makes me food if I ask or helps me make it. If I don’t have the spoons to ask or make food then I simply don’t eat. After eating, or not eating and just bugging my mother for a bit, I wonder back upstairs and back into bed. I usually lay in bed for the rest of the day scrolling through TikTok or tumblr, or discord. I talk to friends and my boyfriend throughout the day.
Later in the evening, I eventually get up again if I’m not experiencing catatonia again and don’t need prompting to get up, and walk back downstairs to bother my sisters or my parents. I eat dinner that my family cooks usually. I eventually get bored after dinner and go back to bed and spend the rest of my night there.
Some days are easier than others. Some days I take a walk with my family, some days I go out to the store with my family, some days all I do is lay in bed staring blankly at a wall. It really depends. This is just how my life looks more recently.
Some questions:
Who makes phone calls for you?: for now? I make my own phone calls with prompting and help making a script. However, due to recently starting to lose my voice more and more, that might have to change.
Who cooks meals for you? Do you make your own meals?: For now, my mother or my father makes about 99% of my meals. I can make simple things with prompting and help but usually don’t waste my energy doing it.
Do you have a job? What do you do with your day?: Most of my days are spent in bed or with family. I don’t work.
Can you bathe yourself?: This is actually something I’ve been consistently working on. The short answer? Yes. I can bathe myself. I just need again, prompting. Need lots of prompting. Grooming? That’s a different story.
What things can’t you do?: I can’t do most ADLs independently, I need help with virtually everything in some way. So cooking, cleaning, calling places, etc. I also need help with bathing and general grooming (brushing teeth, hair, clipping nails, etc)
How often do you use AAC?: As of lately? I talk maybe 10? 20%? of the time. I use aac in the house and outside the house. Outside the house I use aac a good 99% of the time, the other 1% I just do simple yes or no questions. Unless with friends then it’s a bit more of a conversation. In the house I either use aac, a mixture of very small conversation and sentences, or yes or no answers. My speech is very unreliable. Some days are good and I can talk a bit more than usual, and some days I can talk virtually nothing at all. Everyday though, I still struggle with speech in some way.
What activities do you do? What do you do for fun?: virtually nothing. I’m working on getting hobbies but I really struggle with hobbies due to catatonia and executive dysfunction. Hobbies have just never been my thing. I usually read, or write. I love writing.
I hope this helps give some insight and any questions or comments are welcome. I know there’s more I’m leaving out, but this has been what a general day in my life looks like lately. It’s hard. My support needs are getting more, and I’m needing more support. However, I’m taking it one day at a time.

HOW TO: stay motivated + achieve your goals

As a teen, it can be challenging to stay focused and achieve your goals, but with the right mindset and strategies, you can make a lot of progress.
SET CLEAR AND SPECIFIC GOALS: Instead of saying, 'I want to do well in school' try breaking them down, for example, 'I want to get an A in math by studying 30 minutes a day'. Often people lose motivation because their goals are too vague, making them difficult to track and accomplish. This way, you will feel less overwhelmed and your motivation will remain high.
CREATE A VISION BOARD: Having a visual reminder of your dreams can keep you motivated, you can d o this by creating a physical board of inspirational images from Pinterest to help you move forward with your goals. Include images of your dream career, lifestyle, quotes, or any personal achievements you'd like to reach. Keep it somewhere visible to remind you to work hard.
STAY ORGANISED AND TRACK YOUR PROGRESS: Use a planner, to-do list or a productivity app to track your goals and deadlines. its important to celebrate small wins; completing a task or achieving a milestone deserves a reward! This could be something as simple as a snack, a self-care day, a shopping trip- you decide!
FOCUS ON CONSISTENCY, NOT PERFECTION: Motivation can waver, but discipline and consistency are what truly get you to your goals. Even if you don't feel 100% motivated, committing to daily actions - even small ones - will build momentum. This consistency will build habits that lead to success.
FIND INSPIRATION IN ROLE MODELS: Look up people who inspire you - whether they're successful individuals in your field, celebrities, or even family and friends who have worked hard to achieve their goals. Read about their journeys or watch their interviews to understand the struggles they overcame to reach their success.
AVOID BURNOUT BY TAKING BREAKS: While hard work is important, resting is essential. Overworking yourself can lead to burnout and losing motivation. make sure to schedule breaks, and indulge in hobbies or activities that interest you.
STAY POSITIVE: Your mindset plays a huge role in your success. instead of being hard on yourself when you make mistakes, practice self compassion. Understand that setbacks are a part of the process and an opportunity to learn and grow.
VISUALISE YOUR SUCCESS: Visualisation is a powerful tool, close your eyes and imagine what it would feel like when you achieve your goals. Picture the emotions, the sense of accomplishment and the rewards. Spend a few minutes everyday visualising your future if you continue working hard, in order to keep motivated and stay on-track.
ASK YOURSELF 'WHY?': Remind yourself why you are working toward your goals, whether it's for a dream career, personal satisfaction, etc, keeping your 'why?' can reignite motivation during tough times.

since i started talking about calisthenics and the kind of exercise i do as a spoonie with a lot of chronic pain and bone/joint problems ive gotten a couple questions so i thought it might be helpful to make a post kind of outlining some basics that really helped me get started but that i think often get really overlooked when ppl first start thinking of "working out" and the preconceived notions of what abled society tells us that looks like
so for me its all about engaging ur muscles. this is huge because a lot of us, myself included, arent actually very used to actively engaging our muscles during rest. and what i mean by engaging is literally just having the muscle be active without being clenched up. the more u use a muscle, the more active it learns to be, even when sitting, lying down, or resting. it learns to stay engaged and stay doing its job which is holding ur bones together and ur body in the correct position. but if u arent engaging ur muscles consistently, they get used to being overly relaxed and lose strength and form and then struggle when u want to go and use them. this is often combined with poor posture and a huge problem for those of us whose bones and joints dont like to stay where they are and need extra support, as overly relaxed muscles have a more difficult time maintaining proper form and shape. this also makes everything from traditional exercise to just moving around doing daily tasks much more difficult and dangerous, as its way easier for bad form and posture to cause us injury or pain
but engaging ur muscles is actually a very easy and simple thing, it requires no equipment or special moves and can be done sitting, lying down, or standing up. u can do ur whole body all at once or break it up into different parts throughout the day. there's also variations to make it easier in places as u progress
easiest first step i found to get urself used to this is something called progressive muscle relaxation. which is literally just starting at the top of ur body and tensing and then relaxing each muscle group for a few seconds as u work ur way down. it's usually paired with meditation but u dont have to. i usually do it to music cause i find guided meditations boring. a lot of people like to do it either in the morning or right before bed, as it can often help relieve tension and stress and make it easier to fall asleep. there are basic guides like this one

when ur first starting if u want a little extra help identifying what and where ur muscles are so u know ur tensing the right ones in the right ways. once uve done those enough that things are easy, u can break it down even further and isolate more specific muscles and add those in as well. charts like these

where u look up specific muscle groups (in thise case shoulder/upper body muscle groups) can help u visualize exactly where ur muscles are, what directions they go in and what they're connected to, which can help u in understanding how to move and control them
understanding the muscles in ur body and having good control over each area can help so much more than u think when it comes to everyday things. slow, deliberate movement is really the key to that and once u get used to each muscle group and have identified which ones u want to work on, u can isolate those groups and start doing basic calisthenics.
a great resource for that is a channel like hybrid calisthenics which i really like for learning new exercises with lots of options for variations and low impact. his exercises almost always require no equipment, very little impact, and focus on control and stability which are much more beneficial and friendly for spoonies, chronically ill, and disabled people
but even if u dont want to or cant progress farther, simply engaging those muscles for a few minutes a days every day on its own will still help a lot and can make a big difference for some people

The Future is Bright! The Future of OT and My Journey.
The future of Occupational Therapy (OT) is full of promise, and I can’t help but feel inspired by what lies ahead. Throughout my journey as an OT student, especially during my psychosocial block, I’ve seen how OT can transform lives in powerful ways. With each session I ran with my patient, I discovered more about the potential of our profession, how we can blend mental health and meaningful occupations to make a real difference. Now, as I look to the future, I’m more excited than ever to be part of this growing field and ready for exploring how holistic approaches can empower individuals to regain control and purpose in their lives.

OT’s future is increasingly focused on a holistic approach, where mental health is as important as physical rehabilitation. This means looking at the person as a whole, understanding their emotional, psychological, and social needs alongside their physical abilities. During my psychosocial block, I worked closely with a client who had schizophrenia, which gave me deeper insight into how crucial it is to support mental health in therapy.
In the future, I see OTs playing an even larger role in addressing mental health challenges through everyday activities. By using meaningful occupations, whether it’s preparing meals, engaging in social interaction, or taking part in creative arts. OTs can help people with mental health conditions reconnect with their purpose and find structure in their daily lives. I’ve seen how simple tasks like making a fruit salad or cleaning a kitchen counter can help a client feel a sense of control & purpose, build self-esteem, and even improve their mood.
Personal and Professional Growth
My time during the psychosocial block helped me grow, both personally and professionally. Working with clients who struggle with motivation, social isolation, and cognitive impairments pushed me to find new ways to engage them. I had to be patient and creative, often guiding my client step by step, using gentle prompts and encouragement.
Personally, this experience helped me develop greater empathy and flexibility. I learned that small, consistent steps can lead to meaningful progress, even when it doesn’t seem obvious at first. Professionally, I strengthened my skills in working with mental health clients, learning how to tailor activities to their abilities and needs. This growth has given me the confidence to adapt my approach to each unique client, which will be essential as I continue to 4th year.
As the future of OT unfolds, I am committed to focusing on mental health and the importance of engagement in meaningful occupations. To prepare for this, I’m continuing to learn about mental health interventions, particularly in areas like psychosocial rehabilitation, sensory modulation, and cognitive strategies. These approaches are crucial for helping clients reconnect with their environment, develop routines, and manage their emotional well-being.
Additionally, I’m preparing for the future by embracing the concept of lifelong learning. The field of OT is always evolving, and staying up to date with research, best practices, and new techniques is key to being an effective therapist. By remaining open to new ideas and refining my skills, I’ll be ready to offer the best possible care for my future clients.
The future of OT is bright because it is rooted in helping people regain control of their lives. Whether it’s through improving mental health, building social connections, or fostering independence, OTs have the unique ability to make a profound difference. I’m excited to be part of this journey and to see how the profession continues to grow.
My experience in the psychosocial block has shown me the incredible power of meaningful occupation in promoting recovery and well-being. I look forward to bringing these lessons into my future practice and helping clients live fuller, more empowered lives. Between you and me? I think I’ve found my biggest passion in OT: psychosocial. The Impact of Depression and Anxiety in South Africa: A Personal Reflection
Mental health problems like depression and anxiety are growing fast, not only worldwide but also in South Africa. Recently, I came across a national survey that showed how common these issues are here, especially linked to difficult childhood experiences, also known as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). As an Occupational Therapy  student, this really made me think about how we can use our skills to help people dealing with these mental health challenges (Craig et al., 2022).
According to the survey, around 25.7% of South Africans experience probable depression, and 17.8% suffer from probable anxiety (Craig et al., 2022). These numbers are very high, and they show that many people are struggling. The survey also showed that people who went through difficult times during their childhood like abuse or neglect are more likely to suffer from these mental health problems later in life.
This issue is getting a lot of attention in the media lately, with many discussions about the lack of mental health services, especially in rural areas. The connection between Adverse Childhood Experiences and mental health is something we need to take seriously, as it affects many people’s ability to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
Before learning about this issue in detail, I used to think that therapy alone could solve most mental health problems. However, I now realize that we also need to look at a person’s background ,what they went through as children, their family life, and their environment. Understanding this has made me more aware of how complex mental health really is, and it has made me more empathetic towards people who deal with these challenges.
As an OT student, I’ve learned that we can play an important role in helping people manage their depression and anxiety. Occupational therapy focuses on helping people live their daily lives in a meaningful way, even when they are struggling mentally. For example, we can help clients create routines that give them structure and purpose, or suggest activities like group therapy or community programs to help them feel less alone. I’ve also seen how occupational therapy can help people heal from their past traumas by giving them a safe space to build their confidence again. Engaging in simple, everyday tasks can help them regain control over their lives, which is especially important for those who feel overwhelmed by anxiety or depression (Craig et al., 2022).
This survey made me reflect on the challenges we face in South Africa when it comes to mental health. Not everyone has access to the support they need, and many people who are suffering don’t know where to turn. As occupational therapists, we can’t change everything, but we can do our part by helping people build healthier lives, one step at a time.
I also realize that stigma around mental health makes things even harder. It’s up to us, as future therapists, to help break down these barriers and make sure that people feel comfortable asking for help. We can do this by raising awareness and being there for our clients in a non-judgmental way.
Mental health issues like depression and anxiety are a major problem in South Africa, especially for those who have experienced trauma in their childhood. As an OT student, I’m learning how important it is to provide support that goes beyond just therapy. We need to help people rebuild their lives and give them the tools they need to cope with their mental health challenges. How we can ensure more people get access to mental health services is a question that motivates me as I continue my studies.
