SNAPDEX REPORT: WEEK 1

so I hate to rain on the parade, I love a good disk as much as anyone, but this kind of thing has happened every few years for a long time now. For example, the Holographic Versatile Disk was proposed in 2003 with similarly high storage capacities:

The type of technology they're using, with multiple layers in one disk, has been around for a a while also. It's used to a lesser extent in DVDs and Blu-Rays, with a current maximum of four layers for both formats.

Hitachi Maxell announced a Stacked Volumetric Optical Disk in 2006, with 100+ layers of storage space.

Now for the difficulties inherent to a product like this. First, recording to this disk makes use of a femtosecond pulse laser, not exactly a common component, or one that's easy to use.

The recording media is composed of something they call "Aggregation-induced emission dye-doped photoresist," an interesting way of doing things. Effectively, they have a solid layer of material that can be written to using a laser at any point in its 3-dimensional structure, and on an extremely small scale. However, as with so many optical technologies, it cannot be erased. This is write-once, read-many media, often abbreviated to WORM. That's one of the biggest difficulties with this kind of thing. Even the longest-running TV shows would have difficulty filling the quoted maximum storage of 1.6 petabytes. And then, of course, you run into the issue of mass-producing written disks. With A DVD or Blu-Ray, a "master" mold can be created and physically pressed into the recording medium, stamping out an entire completed disk all at once. With volumetric recording, no such master can be made. Each disk would have to be written to sequentially, dramatically increasing the time and space requirements of production. Even the paper itself only suggests applications in the datacenter space.

All this to say, it's unlikely this will be a consumer product any time soon. as much as I would love to keep 200tb in a dvd, it unfortunately seems to be restricted to research for now. There are limited applications of high capacity optical storage currently available in the enterprise world, however. For example, Sony makes a cartridge-based optical format that can store up to 5.5tb per cart:

But who knows? Maybe one day we'll all get back to carrying around those big zipper pouches filled with petabytes of media. All phones will have a PSP-style UMD player for tiny disks with mere terabytes of space. A future to strive for.

Is this my best comic ever?? Nope. Do I think I characterized either of these two particularly well in this comic?? Not really. Did I spend an unreasonable amount of time on it to the point that it would be a waste to not post it?? Yes, yes I did.

I really committed to this one, spent a lot of time on those backgrounds and treated myself to ample suffering with the perspective, which is not my strong suit but I am happy with how it ultimately looks. Yay perspective and background practice!!

(Tbh I shouldn't talk like I think this one sucks, I think I've just been staring at it for so long that my brain has decided it's not good and it's actually way better than I think it is, and honestly I am quite happy with it. The artistic process really is something, isn't it?)

The inspiration was basically me reminding... myself... to take breaks sometimes... by drawing for several hour stints during my only little bits of free time. Which totally tracks. Probably. But I've been rolling around in my brain this idea that Lambert is a very uptight people pleaser and anxious workaholic, but Narinder, at least since adjusting himself to the circumstances (which probably took at least a century, maybe two) has discovered the joys of self care, and has made an active effort to chill tf out. This has not made him any less terrifying to the cultists (save for Lambert's closest disciples), nor has it made him friendlier to really anyone but Lambert (and maybe his siblings), but he sure has found some serious peace of mind. That said, I can't place what his motivations are here. Perhaps he is secretly concerned about Lambert's sanity, because he doesn't want them to turn into what he was, or maybe he's just trying to steal away some quality time with his one and only friend, but regardless of the reason, I spent too much time on this for nobody to see it, dang it.

That said. Enjoy this silly little comic that I spent way too much time on, and I hope this silly comic brings you some joy today.

hiii im sure you’ve answered this before but in regards to your twst x Pokémon, how do you choose which Pokémon go give to the cast?? really curious since your choices are unique :O

unique in a good way, I hope? 😅 (jk jk I haven't come across too many pokemon AUs, so I was going in without preconceptions, I guess!) I was sorta aiming somewhere between doing, like, a full AU with internal consistency and everything, and just picking entirely based on theme/character, so maybe that's why! basically I just set some arbitrary rules (no legendaries/no repeats/evo stages based on year) and then went on ~vibes~. a couple were also suggestions (thank you guys!) and last-minute decisions, so it was a bit of a delightful mess of ideas!

my one regret is that I should have given Riddle a Togedemaru after all. ...you know what, he can have one now, why not
