#I see part of his motivation to do better is to become someone in the WoL eyes worth not leaving behind again

Your Avendurer! Zenos comics are always so good, and I love how you write him. The touch about him being functionally doomed to immortality is the perfect level of extra spice on top, too. Imo it's the perfect motivation for him to genuinely try to better himself as a person.
Thank you! Tbh the concept has had a hold on my brain since the end of Endwalker, and I'm glad you really enjoy it ^-^
It’s the subtle character development he’s gotten over the course of the story and the potential he has that makes me adore writing Adventurer!Zenos and the journey he has in turn of following the WoL's (Meteor, in my cases) footsteps.
Making himself immortal is actually the main inspiration behind it too, it's a consequence that self-sabotaged his original goal. Maybe eventually becoming a wake up for him that Alisaie was absolutely right and that he may still have an opportunity to not doom himself to being alone forever.
It's actually why I also made him a tank too, having him turn away from being "the man who was willing to destroy the world for his own chase of his desires" to him being willing to throw himself in and to help and protect others even at the cost of himself for a time, a thought that has stuck with me since the theory of him saving WoL with the remote crossed my mind.
#ask#anon#ffxiv spoilers#endwalker spoilers#adventurer zenos#is literally 'on no the consequences of my actions'- the character#exposed to having a moment of connection with another person- something that is implied he never really had#I see part of his motivation to do better is to become someone in the WoL eyes worth not leaving behind again#because I dont write him holding it against anyone for being left behind after internalizing Alisaie's words#I do see him wanting to become a true equal to the WoL and at the beginning views himself as being back at the bottom#and that- perhaps realizing that he destroyed WoL's trust in him after Garlemald is working to earn himself the title of being his friend#and knowing what that actually means rather than declaring it and imposing himself to be there#and in doing so he learns to open his eyes to the world#actually learns how to make friends and acknowledge others beyond their strength and courage#(tbh part of that is also just because I really enjoy the manga relationship between Zenos and Alisaie and Zenos and Emet)#(It's non canon but written with them in character so its just funny inspo I had)#i just think he's neat

˚₊‧ ꒰ა traits and habits that your future self will thank you for .ᐟ 🫧🎀🧁
📧 -> my first long post in a while 🫶 I've had my ups and downs recently but for the most part life has been pretty good.

O1 𝜗𝜚 𓈒 ݁ ₊ don't overshare.
you don't have to be nonchalant and mysterious, but take a moment to consider your words before you speak. (e.g. "will i regret telling this person this piece of information in the future?")
O2 𝜗𝜚 𓈒 ݁ ₊ learn how to listen + let people talk.
It's crucial to make others feel heard, even when you might not share their viewpoint. Never cut someone off on purpose whilst they're speaking, it can really hurt someones feelings. if you accidentally cut someone off, always apologize and let them finish speaking once you've said your point.
O3 𝜗𝜚 𓈒 ݁ ₊ learn how to say no.
i know it's hard not to be a people-pleaser, but learning to say no to things that don't align with you is so important. It can help you avoid uncomfortable, awkward, and even risky situations. Setting boundaries is hard but being taken advantage of is harder.

Make it a habit to eat meals regularly. Reduce your sugar intake. Embrace healthier food choices. Establish a skincare routine. Treat yourself to a shower after a long day. Stay hydrated. this is super cliche, i know. but it truly has a significant impact. Picture this -> you're sitting for a math exam, and you glance over at your desk partner's work, only to see completely different answers. You've always admired this person, so you quickly assume your answers must be wrong and decide to change them to match theirs. When the results come back, you discover that your original answers were spot on, but now you've failed because you chose to follow someone else instead of trusting your gut. Just because others are taking a different path doesn't mean it's the right one for you, or that the other person is necessarily "correct". ‘silly little love affair’ [Part I of ?]
Lucifer x F!Reader [Adam’s Sister]
[summary: the secret is out Adam found out about his sister little ‘love affair’ why she’s been visiting hell and now she stands before Sera]
[warning: Adam being a jerk: angst: implications of sex: Adam]
next part
She wrapped herself in her blanket, like a cocoon. Her pillowed stained with tears and snot, she needed to clean her bedsheets and her clothes. She didn’t have the energy nor motivation, she could barely bring herself to get out of bed. It had been a month, she was supposed to go down and visit Lucifer. Today, but couldn’t. She whimpered, and nuzzled her head into her sheets.
Ignoring the knocks at her door, “Seriously, Y/n get the fuck up!” shouted Adam, and she curled up into a ball and closed her eyes her face stained with tears.
She didn’t want to see him. She never wanted to hear his voice again, he ruined her life. While he got everything went against basically every moral thing. And acted horribly. When her little relationship with Lucifer, was found out she was barred from ever visiting or using her powers again. When Adam, gets nothing but a slap on his wrists when he messes up.
“Stop being such a downer, are you dead? You better not be dead?” Adam shouted, knocking even louder.
“FUCK OFF!” Shouted [Y/n], angrily tears in her eyes her cheeks red and eyes puffy. “I SAID I NEVER WANTED TO SEE YOI AGAIN AND I MEANT IT! She exclaimed, grabbing a book from her nightstand and throwing it at the door to her apartment. Pages scattered across the room where it fell with a thud.
Knocks of worried friends left unanswered, as she cried in her room. She had become a prisoner in her own home, all because of her little “love affair” with the king of hell, Lucifer Morningstar.
Sera looked down at [Y/n], “Your silly little love affair is over,” said Sera, and [Y/n] glared at her angrily and at Adam. “Gross as shit.” Adam mumbled, a wide grin on his face.
“Sneaking out of heaven visiting Hell, conversing with Lucifer. Who went against heavens rules?” Sera shook, her head in disappointment. “I excepted better from you,”she muttered, and [Y/n] rolled her eyes.
She shrugged her shoulders,“So what I’m in love big whoop.” said [Y/n], looking up at Sera.
Adam gagged and rolled his eyes, “More like crazy.” He said, and she snapped her neck towards him.
“Fuck you Adam,” she spat, and pointed at him. “You get everything served to you on a silver pla-” she stomped closer, angrily.
“SILENCE!” Sera shouted, looking down at her.
She kept her head down, “Your powers are hereby revoked. You will no longer be able to travel between Heaven and Hell. And will be under constant surveillance.” She looked at the older Seraphim in shock.
Adam laughed and cheered mockingly, “Ah loser take that you fucking bitch.” Adam exclaimed, flipping off his sister.
Her lower lip quivered, as tears brimmed her eyes. “All because, I found happiness with someone who goes against your rules everything you’ve set in place.” said [Y/n], and she looked up at the older Seraphim.
She glared at her, “You’re not god, Sera.” She spat, and more eyes appeared on Sera. “Stop trying to play the part.” She growled, clenching her fists.
Sera held up her hand to silence the girl, “You’re walking a thin line Y/n.” said Sera sternly, looking down at her. “You don’t wanna end up fallen.” She said, and the girl scoffed.
She lowered her head, and downcast pursing her lips and mumbled, “That would be a blessing,” She mumbled, but it was loud enough for Sera and everyone else in the room to hear.
“So desperate for a dick.” Adam mumbled, shaking his head looking at his sister.
She turned and glared at him, her brows furrowed. “Says, the egostistical misogynistic asshole, whose own ex wives wanted nothing to do with you!” She shouted, angrily her nails digging into the palm of her hand.
shouted Sera, “Y/n!” The older seraphim’s glared at the girl. “ITS UNFAIR HE GETS EVERYTHING HANDED TO HIM!” Shouted [Y/n], angry at the unfairness the hypocrisy of it all.
“Gets away with shit!”
“The only reason he’s-"
“That’s enough!” Sera shouted, adjusting her hair and the eyes faded away.
“Y/n Eden, you are hereby barred from leaving heaven again” sera said, and the girls eyes widened as she looked up at her. “What?!” Her voice cracked, and she looked down biting her lower lip drawing blood.
“and from participating in the yearly exterminations” sera added.
“B-But, I-I?” y/n stammered, lowering her head.
“Yes!” Adam cheered, getting up close to his sister. “Take that bitch no more loser dick for you.” Adam exclaimed, getting down and getting up in his sisters face. “Adam!” Sera shouted, wanting him to be quiet. But he didn’t he kept on going, taunting and teasing her.
[Y/n] clenched her fist, and furrowed her eyes. “Take that loser, aw you gonna cry” her body started shaking with rage. She was boiling with rage, like a tea kettle about to burst.
“We’ll take that to-”
She sucker punched him in the face, breaking his nose. Catching Adam off guard, “Ow, fuck you bitch!” He spat, clenching his nose. She glared at him angrily, “Don’t ever talk to me again, I don’t even wanna see your face.” Her voice was like venom, and her nose scrunched up.
“I’m disgusted to be related to you.” She spat, glaring at him. Adam was taken off guard, seemingly hurt by her words. He scoffed, “Ah, w-well same here.” He said, watching as she stormed out slamming the doors behind her.
flashback ended
“Ugh, be a depressed downer.” shouted Adam, as he finally left the constant knocking finally over. She lifted her lead from the covers, and stared blankly at her bedsheets.
She opened her closed hand; revealing a rubber duck. With one of Lucifer’s feathers from his wings, attached to it. She tearfully brought it to her lips, and kissed it. “Luci.” She sniffled, she held it in her hands falling back onto her bedz gently rubbing it with her thumb. closing her eyes as she held the rubber duck close to her chest. Drifting into a dreamless sleep.
Heaven was supposed to be a paradise a joyful place. But for Y/n it was nothing more than a prison even more so now. Heaven had just become her own personal Hell.

Hozier Dating Headcannons

He would definitely love to date someone who is more of an old soul, someone who loves older literature or music
Expect regular serenades after he writes songs about you and personal concerts when you ask to hear a certain song. These moments would probably be very intimate and would just happen in the comfort of your home together.
You would be the first to hear any new ideas he has for his music and would read you his lyrics, asking you what you think he should change. And of course, you can’t think of anything that could make it any better since it is already so beautiful which infuriates him to no end (he loves you tho)
He seems like the kind of partner to go all out for anniversaries or birthdays and would set up really special dates and surprise outings, always making sure that you are comfortable and having fun. He would probably take you to secluded places surrounded by nature where you can just enjoy each other's company with no one else around.
He would hand write you beautiful letters especially when he is going away on tour or if he is going to be having a late night in the studio and won’t see you for a while
He values his privacy and would most likely keep your relationship lowkey and private. He wouldn’t hide you and wouldn’t hesitate to talk about you a little every now and then but he also wouldn’t tell everyone too much about your relationship, he likes to keep certain things to himself.
He would support you in everything that you do, whether it’s just a project that you have taken up or if it is something for work, he would be right behind you at all times cheering you on. If you start to doubt yourself, he would be the one to tell you how well you are doing and would motivate you
He has a lot of appreciation for you especially since he knows it can be difficult to be with him when he is really focused on his music or if he is touring. So he would always express how thankful he is that you are there for him, even during tough times.
Considering his love for art and literature, he would love to take you on little museum or gallery dates and would definitely tell you the backstory of certain pieces if you seemed interested. He would also take note of the kind of books, poems or art you like and would give you unique gifts inspired by this.
Despite his fame, he is very grounded and values his private time and time with family, so he would love a partner who listens and values your opinions and alone time together. He would love to see you with his family and is in love with how much his parents and friends adore you.
If you’re not Irish, he would love to introduce you to certain foods or traditions from Ireland. He is always really excited to see your reaction to trying Irish snacks/drinks and remembers what you like or dislike
He is a big ‘I remember you said you like this, so i got it for you’ partner. He remembers everything about you, from your favourite food to your favourite songs or movies and even your favourite piece of jewelry
He is a very emotional guy and at first he struggles to open up to you but as your relationship grows, he becomes more comfortable being himself around you and knows you would never judge him just like how he would never judge you. Once he becomes fully comfortable with you, there is not one thing he wouldn't tell you and never hides anything from you. He trusts you with everything.
As I said he is a very private guy, so he wouldn’t be a big fan of PDA but as your relationship goes on, he will start to be more open about it and will show you off whenever he can. He loves hand holding and will periodically kiss your temple and or the back of your hand when you are out
Part 2!!

No Margin for Error: Chapter Nine
WC: 5.9k
CW: None
Notes: Long time no seeeeee. Send thoughts to my anons plz it’s my fav part of the day… might even motivate me to get ch 10 out sooner
The hum of the plane engine had become background noise an hour ago, steady and hypnotic, like the rhythm of breath. Paige had her legs folded beneath her on the cream leather seat, hoodie sleeves pulled down over her knuckles, a half-empty bottle of water rolling gently near her ankle every time the jet shifted altitude. She didn’t bother to catch it. Just watched it drift like it had somewhere better to be.
The cabin was dim except for the soft blue glow of the windows and the yellow-white reading light Azzi had on across from her, illuminating the pages of whatever novel she was pretending to focus on. Her socked feet were propped up on the seat in front of her, posture lazy in the way only someone completely at home in this kind of space could manage.
Azzi’s jet was nice. Quiet. Private. Which made it all the more jarring when Paige’s phone buzzed in her lap with three back-to-back notifications. First from ESPN. Then The Race. Then a push alert from her own F1 app.
Her stomach dropped a little when she read the headline.
“BREAKING: Red Bull’s Top Driver to Retire at End of Season.”
She blinked, tapped into the article without thinking, skimming the lines about “tenure” and “graceful exit” and “opening the door for a new generation.” The typical send-off language. But that wasn’t what her brain stuck on.
It stuck on the last sentence of the third paragraph.
“…likely to spark immediate interest from top-tier drivers currently in contract negotiations.”
“Azzi,” Paige said, too casually.
Azzi didn’t look up from her book. “Hm?”
“You see the Red Bull thing?”
Azzi’s eyes flicked up now, sharp and curious. “What thing?”
Paige angled her phone screen toward her. “He’s retiring.”
That got Azzi’s attention. She leaned forward, taking the phone from Paige’s hand and squinting down at the headline like maybe she hadn’t read it right the first time. She exhaled low through her nose. “Damn.”
“Right?”
“Didn’t see that coming.”
“Neither did I.”
Paige took her phone back, but before she could lock it again, a new email appeared — top of the inbox, urgent flag marked red.
Subject: Meeting Inquiry: Red Bull Racing
Her mouth went dry.
She clicked into it.
Hi Paige,
Hope you’re well. We’d like to schedule a brief conversation this week, if possible, no pressure, of course, but we’re evaluating options and would love to hear your thoughts.
Best,
Helmut Marko.
Driver Development, Red Bull Racing
She stared at it a little longer than necessary. Not because she didn’t know what it meant, but because some part of her — the part that had started all of this at nineteen, when she didn’t know better — still couldn’t believe this was her life.
Azzi was watching her now. The quiet kind of watching. The “I know something just changed” kind.
Paige closed her phone slowly and didn’t look up. “I just got an email.”
“From who?”
“…Red Bull.”
Azzi sat still for a beat.
And then: “Do they want a meeting?”
Paige nodded.
There was a silence between them now, not awkward exactly, but heavy. The kind that made your ears ring just a little.
Azzi set her book down on the armrest. “Do you want to go to Red Bull?”
The question was simple. Too simple. It hit Paige harder than she expected.
She looked at her lap, hands twisting the hem of her hoodie, heart knocking a little too fast against her ribs. She wasn’t supposed to say it out loud. She hadn’t even decided anything yet. But some part of her deep down (the unguarded part, the one she only seemed to access around Azzi) wanted to let her in anyway.
“I don’t know,” Paige said.
She meant it.
Azzi waited.
“They’d probably offer more money,” Paige added after a second. “And they’re Red Bull. The car’s always fast. Always evolving. They’re ruthless about it.”
Azzi’s voice was quiet. “But?”
Paige hesitated. “I’m used to the Ferrari car. The handling. The engineers. Luka. You. I know how to win in this car.”
Azzi didn’t smile. She didn’t tease or joke or pretend it wasn’t a big deal. She just nodded once, like she’d already played out this entire conversation in her head and was waiting for Paige to catch up.
Paige exhaled. “I shouldn’t have said anything.”
“I’m glad you did.”
That surprised her.
Azzi leaned her head back against the seat, gaze shifting to the ceiling like she was talking more to herself now. “I’d rather know than guess.”
Paige didn’t answer. She didn’t trust her voice enough.
The plane continued east across the Atlantic, clouds scattered below them like pieces of some forgotten quilt. The air up here felt cleaner. Lighter. But no altitude in the world could stop Paige’s stomach from twisting into the shape of a question mark.
She stared out the window for a long time.
She was headed to New York first. Then Minnesota. Then probably Italy again, or Japan, or wherever the hell the next GP was. Her life, as always, was measured in terminals and tire compounds.
But somewhere between the breaking news and the unread email and Azzi’s eyes on her, Paige realized she was standing on the edge of something. Something big. Something she hadn’t planned for.
And maybe the part that scared her most was how badly she wanted to take Azzi with her, wherever she went.
–
The landing was smooth, quieter than Paige expected for a private jet touching down at JFK. She blinked against the sunlight as it streamed through the windows, golden and warm despite the haze of city smog. Azzi was already halfway through her phone the second the wheels hit the runway, thumb scrolling through emails like they’d never left Europe. Her focus, as always, moved faster than the plane.
The car waiting for them outside was black and sleek and forgettable in that New York way that screamed wealth through silence. Paige climbed in after Azzi and let her head fall back against the leather, eyes half-lidded as the skyline began to unfold in front of them. Azzi’s driver knew where to go without being told — straight to the penthouse.
Azzi’s place was exactly what Paige remembered and also somehow not at all. High ceilings. Cold marble. A wall of windows framing the city like a movie still. Everything smelled faintly like vanilla and something expensive Paige couldn’t name.
She dropped her bag by the couch and stretched her arms up toward the ceiling with a groan. “I’m starving.”
Azzi glanced up from where she was unlacing her shoes. “Me too. Let’s go eat.”
Paige blinked at her. “Right now?”
“Yes,” Azzi said. Then she paused, surveyed Paige’s wrinkled hoodie and sweatpants. “But, like, get real clothes on.”
Paige raised an eyebrow. “These are real clothes.”
Azzi smirked, already heading for her closet. “Not dinner-in-Manhattan clothes.”
Paige made a sound halfway between a sigh and a laugh but followed her toward the guest room anyway. Fifteen minutes later, they emerged from their rooms. Paige was in dark slacks and a crisp navy button-up. Her hair was tied back in a low bun, collar open just enough to pass as effortless.
Azzi grinned when she saw her. “Wow. You’re actually wearing something real tonight?”
Paige rolled her eyes. “You went full outfit. I’m just balancing it out.”
“Sure you are.”
The restaurant was a few blocks from the penthouse, upscale but quiet, one of those places you only knew if you knew. Inside, the lights were low and warm, the air perfumed citrus something. A waiter led them to a booth in the corner, just private enough to feel separate from the rest of the world.
The menus were handed out and barely touched. Azzi knew what she wanted before she sat down.
As the drinks arrived, sparkling water for Paige and some fruity mocktail for Azzi, the conversation shifted. It wasn’t about racing. Or sponsors. Or media days. It was light and slow, looping through stories they hadn’t had time to tell all season. Paige noticed it in the small things — the way Azzi tilted toward her slightly when she spoke, the way their knees brushed under the table, the way neither of them checked their phones unless they were mid-laugh or reaching for their drinks.
Halfway through the main course, Paige caught a flash of something near the window, the glint of a camera lens in the hands of a man sitting alone at a neighboring table.
She didn’t make a show of it. Just leaned in slightly and murmured, “Don’t look now, but camera guy, two tables down.”
Azzi didn’t flinch. Just reached for her fork and smiled like Paige had said something funny. “Got it.”
For a few minutes, they talked around it. Then the food arrived: steak for Paige, some complicated pasta dish for Azzi that smelled like heaven.
“This is so good,” Azzi said around a mouthful. “I’m never eating airport food again.”
“Liar,” Paige said.
“Okay, fine. But I’m dreaming of this next time we’re stuck in Belgium.”
They were laughing again by the time the waiter came back. “Any dessert for the table?” he asked, poised with his little notepad.
Azzi lit up instantly. “Yes. Absolutely.”
Paige gave her a look. “You’re still hungry?”
“I have a sweet tooth,” Azzi said, unapologetic.
“I’m good,” Paige said to the waiter, who nodded and turned to Azzi expectantly.
Azzi tilted her head, mock-betrayed. “Wow. So you’re calling me fat.”
“What?” Paige blinked. “No—”
“I just said I want dessert and you said I’m good, which is code for I don’t need dessert, which is code for some people do, which is code for—”
“Oh my god, Azzi.” Paige ran a hand down her face, laughing now. “You’re impossible.”
Azzi grinned, victorious. “I’ll have the chocolate thing. And she’ll have one too.”
The waiter nodded, utterly unfazed, and disappeared.
Paige gave her a look. “I said I didn’t want dessert.”
“You said it. But you didn’t mean it.”
Paige shook her head, but when the plate arrived, she picked up her spoon without another word. The chocolate was warm and rich and exactly what she hadn’t realized she wanted.
Azzi leaned her chin on her hand and watched her take the first bite.
“Told you.”
And Paige, in spite of everything, couldn’t stop smiling.
–
Back at Azzi’s apartment, the lights were low, and the sounds of the city were muffled through thick glass. Paige dropped her jacket by the couch again and toed off her shoes with a quiet sigh, already feeling the warm hush of late-night softness settle over the penthouse. Azzi disappeared into the kitchen, the refrigerator door opening and closing with the easy rhythm of someone at home. Paige didn’t follow right away. She just stood there for a second, absorbing it. The quiet. The casualness. The fact that she could walk in like this and not ask permission.
Azzi came back with two waters and handed one over wordlessly. Paige took it with a small smile, brushing her fingers against Azzi’s for a moment longer than necessary.
“Hey,” Azzi said, leaning against the counter. “When’s your flight to Minnesota?”
Paige twisted the cap off the bottle. “Whenever I want.”
Azzi raised an eyebrow. “Right. Millionaire life.”
Paige shrugged, sipping her water. “Perks.”
Azzi held her gaze for a beat. “So… is that you saying you don’t have to leave tonight?”
Paige blinked, then smiled faintly. “Is that you asking me to stay the night?”
“Yes,” Azzi said, without missing a beat.
Paige’s smile curved wider. “Then okay.”
Azzi’s shoulders loosened, just a little. She nodded toward the hallway. “Fair warning though. My parents are coming over tomorrow.”
Paige stilled. Just a second. Barely noticeable. But something tightened behind her ribs.
“Oh. Nice,” she said, setting the bottle down.
Azzi didn’t catch it — or if she did, she let it slide. She was already halfway to the couch, flopping down with a sigh, her long legs stretched out and crossed at the ankle. “They want to see me before we head out to Azerbaijan. I figured we’d do brunch or something.”
“Cool,” Paige said, easing down beside her. “Sounds chill.”
It did not sound chill.
Azzi’s parents. Tomorrow morning. Paige let her head tip back on the cushion and stared at the ceiling. She shouldn’t care. They weren’t dating. They hadn’t talked about it like that. There was no label, no pressure, no anything. But still.
She felt it again — that quiet, rising panic in her chest. Not the kind she felt before a race. Not adrenaline. This was different. Deeper. Harder to explain.
The idea of meeting Azzi’s parents didn’t scare her because she thought they’d dislike her.
It scared her because somewhere in the back of her mind, Paige was starting to realize she wanted them to like her.
And that was… not a casual thought.
They’d been orbiting this not-quite-friends, not-quite-something-else thing for months now. Neither of them naming it. Both of them pretending that the in-between space was enough. And maybe it was — for Azzi. She was so effortlessly open, so fine with just being seen, being known. She didn’t flinch when her friends asked if she and Paige were something. She didn’t hesitate when she put her hand on Paige’s back in public, or wore her hoodie that no one knows is her hoodie because it’s just a Ferrari team sweatshirt.
And Paige wasn’t like that.
Not with anyone but her dad and Drew. They knew. But no one else. Not really. Not the media, not her extended family, not even most of her friends back in Minnesota. She hadn’t meant for it to be a secret. It just hadn’t come up, and then it kept not coming up, and then it got harder to bring up at all.
But now she was here, about to stay the night again, and tomorrow she’d sit across from Azzi’s parents and pretend this was nothing. Or maybe not pretend. Maybe just exist in the weird space between pretending and hoping.
Azzi turned to look at her, her eyes soft in the lamplight.
“You okay?”
Paige nodded, a little too quickly. “Yeah. Just tired.”
Azzi leaned her head gently against Paige’s shoulder. Paige didn’t move.
She just sat there, suddenly feeling the weight of something unspoken pressing into her ribs. Wanting to say something, anything, and knowing she wouldn’t. Not tonight.
So instead, she leaned her cheek against Azzi’s hair and closed her eyes.
And let herself stay.
–
Brunch was at a small corner spot that smelled like lavender and espresso and fresh bread. It was the kind of place Azzi didn’t even need to look up directions to, she just knew it by heart, like half of New York. Paige followed her through the glass doors, head slightly ducked, even though it didn’t matter anymore. They’d already been seen. Photographed. Edited into slow-motion montages over TikTok sounds. She could hide her face, but a lot of damage had been done a long time ago.
Inside, the place buzzed with quiet conversation and the sound of cutlery tapping plates. Paige spotted Azzi’s parents right away. Katie and Tim Fudd were at a corner table, both standing halfway as Azzi approached, arms open, smiles already on.
Paige braced herself.
She’d never said it out loud — not to Azzi, not even to her dad who she texted this morning — but some part of her had expected this to go poorly. Not dramatic, just… off. The stiff politeness of people trying not to say what they really thought. The overcorrection of guarded approval. The silent evaluation of her outfit or her championship standings or her carefully ambiguous Instagram captions.
Instead, Tim gave her a warm nod and said, “Nice to see you again, Paige,” like they’d had brunch last week instead of never. And Katie pulled her into a brief, not-overbearing hug before they all sat down.
And then it was just… easy.
Not fake-easy, not tension-smoothed easy. Just real.
They ordered quickly. Pancakes for Azzi, a veggie omelet for Katie, black coffee for Tim, and whatever sounded least like food for Paige, which turned out to be eggs and toast. Then the conversation started, and to Paige’s surprise, it didn’t revolve around racing. Not at first.
Katie asked about Minnesota, about Paige’s dad, about what it was like to grow up with “so much snow and so little coffee.” Tim wanted to know what books she’d been reading lately, and Paige fumbled, caught off-guard, before muttering something about having started some novel and then abandoning it halfway through a flight to Monaco. That got a laugh out of Tim. Not a mocking one, just understanding. Then somehow they were all talking about bad travel reads and books people lied about finishing.
It was bizarre. In a good way.
Then the talk drifted back to F1. Not in the press conference kind of way, but more curious. Tim asked if Ferrari felt different this year. Katie asked Azzi if the pink helmet had been a branding move or just because she liked it. Paige waited for the tension to return, for the questions to circle back to contracts or media coverage or what it was like to be twenty-two and under a microscope.
But it didn’t. They just… talked.
And Paige found herself liking them.
Katie had Azzi’s calm, watchful energy. The kind that made you feel seen even if she hadn’t said a word. And Tim was like a low-stakes ESPN commentator, the kind of person who probably had opinions on your golf swing but would keep them to himself unless you asked. They loved Azzi. That was obvious. But it wasn’t overbearing. It was a quiet kind of pride, the kind that didn’t need to be stated.
And Paige… Paige didn’t feel tested.
She felt included.
At one point, while Azzi was busy explaining tire degradation to a very amused Tim, Katie leaned slightly toward Paige and said, “You’re different in person. More relaxed.”
Paige blinked. “Uh. Good different?”
Katie smiled, sipping her tea. “Very.”
There was no follow-up. No pointed glances or motherly warnings. Just that.
Later, Paige excused herself to the bathroom, more out of needing a breath than anything else. She leaned on the marble sink, staring at herself in the mirror. Her cheeks were flushed and she looked tired, maybe. Or just unguarded.
Azzi had made it look easy. Paige wasn’t sure if that was a skill or just who she was. But somehow this had gone… well. Better than well.
When she came back out, Azzi had stolen a bite of everyone’s food and was grinning unapologetically while Katie fake-scolded her. Paige slid back into her seat and caught Azzi’s eye.
And Azzi — completely relaxed, pancake syrup on the side of her mouth — leaned in close enough that only Paige could hear.
“They like you,” she said softly, like it was just a neutral truth.
Paige picked up her toast and replied without thinking, “I think I like them too.”
And when she looked up again, Azzi was already smiling.
–
Paige hadn’t intended to go to Montana.
Not really. Not officially. The flight was booked late at night on a whim, sometime after Azzi had fallen asleep beside her in the apartment and Paige had watched the skyline for hours, wide awake and heavy with something she couldn’t name. The car met her at JFK just before sunrise, no public post, no press to catch it. She arrived under low clouds and quieter thoughts, and she didn’t text her mom until the wheels hit the tarmac.
Paige: u home?
Amy called two minutes later. Paige answered before the first ring ended.
She hadn’t seen her mom since the off-season. Since before testing. Before Ferrari. Before Azzi. Before everything got loud again like last time. Like F3. The driveway looked the same. It was cracked in the same corner it always had been, gravel spitting up under the tires of the rental SUV. The mountains hovered in the distance like they’d been waiting.
Amy opened the front door the moment Paige’s feet hit the porch. And Paige, despite being twenty-two years old and leading the F1 world championship, dropped her bags and just let herself be hugged.
It didn’t fix anything. But it helped.
They made tea and sat at the kitchen island like nothing had changed. Like Paige hadn’t just flown across the country on a Tuesday with nothing but a carry-on and a handful of feelings she didn’t understand.
“So,” Amy said eventually, one eyebrow raised, “you wanna tell me what’s going on, or should I guess?”
Paige gave her a lopsided smile. “You’d guess right.”
Amy took a sip from her mug. “Try me anyway.”
And Paige did.
It came out slower than she meant, with a lot of pauses and not a lot of eye contact. But Amy didn’t rush her, didn’t fill the silences. Paige talked about Ferrari. About Monza. About what it felt like to lose by less than a second to someone you might actually be in love with and not even know it. She talked about the Red Bull thing—how they wanted a meeting, how her name was suddenly in headlines again like she didn’t still have a season to finish.
And then she talked about Azzi.
Not like gossip. Not even like a crush. Just… truthfully.
“She’s the best driver I’ve ever raced,” Paige said quietly. “And also the best person I’ve ever been around. And that’s… complicated.”
Amy didn’t speak, just pressed her hand lightly against Paige’s back. Paige kept going.
“She’s so comfortable. With herself. With people. She doesn’t even think about it, and I… I’m still hiding everything from half the world. I’m hiding what I have with her, I guess.” A pause. “And that’s not her fault.”
Amy just nodded.
Then Paige mentioned the concussion. The one from July. The one she brushed off because the team cleared her after a week and she didn’t want to miss Silverstone. She told Amy about the headaches that still came sometimes, about the way light sometimes made her flinch in the garage, about how her balance felt slightly off on stairs when she was tired.
Amy’s silence was different then. Sharper.
“Paige Madison.”
“Yeah,” Paige muttered, sheepish.
“That was two months ago.”
“I know.”
“You don’t wait two months to say something like that.”
“I didn’t wait,” Paige argued half-heartedly. “I just… didn’t bring it up.”
Amy gave her a look, one Paige remembered from middle school when she forgot to ice her knees. Then she stood behind her and placed both hands gently on Paige’s neck.
Paige didn’t protest.
Amy’s thumbs worked over the knots at the base of her skull, exactly like she used to when Paige was twelve and spent too long karting after dark. There was something about it. About being home, about being touched with that kind of care that made something in her eyes sting. But she blinked it away.
“I didn’t want to sit alone at my house.” she said softly.
Amy didn’t stop massaging. “I know. That’s why you came here.”
“Yeah.”
“You staying long?”
Paige shrugged. “Just a couple days. Then I’m back to New York. Or Maranello. Or wherever.”
Amy pressed into her shoulder blade, then eased up. “You ever think about slowing down?”
“All the time.”
“And?”
“I don’t know how.”
Amy kissed the top of her head. “You don’t have to know. But maybe try.”
Paige let herself close her eyes. Just for a minute.
It didn’t solve anything. Not the Azzi situation. Not the Red Bull meeting. Not the press or the performance pressure or the concussion symptoms she should’ve told her team about weeks ago. But sitting there, with her mother’s hands on her shoulders and the smell of home in her hair, it felt like something was okay. Even if just for now.
–
Baku.
There was something about the city circuit in Azerbaijan that Paige liked more than she meant to. It wasn’t just the long straights or the tricky, blind corners. It was the way the city felt alive around her when she was strapped in. Like she was flying through a place still moving, still breathing, the world flashing by in colored lights and old stone.
The castle walls came up faster than she remembered. That tight left-right-left flick through the medieval section always made her nervous her first year in Formula One. Now, it just made her grin.
“Okay, that’s green in Sector Two,” Luka’s voice crackled in her ear, all calm efficiency. “Car’s responding well.”
“Feels good,” she replied, flicking her wrist lightly on exit. “Bit of understeer if I push into that uphill right, but otherwise nice.”
Another pause on the line. “Copy. Tyre temps?”
“Stable. Tell Fred I’m better at managing now.”
“You say that every weekend,” Luka deadpanned.
Paige smirked. “Yeah, but this time it’s true.”
Luka’s laugh was a little more real this time, brief in her ears. “We’ll see in twenty laps.”
Practice was going smooth. No heavy traffic, no weird bumps, and the Ferrari was humming through the corners like it wanted to run. They’d done a good job on the setup this week, she could tell already. Braking felt crisp. Rear traction was right there. No wobble.
Azzi was already on track ahead of her, a few laps into her first run of the evening. Paige glanced down the straight and caught a flash of her teammate’s car disappearing around the turn. Same red livery as hers, low under the lights, moving like it was skating on rails.
She didn’t mean to say anything. It just kind of came out.
“Where’s Azzi on the delta?”
And it was the way she said it.
The tone. The way her voice dipped around the name , softer, quieter, like she was asking about someone she knew from before all this. Luka didn’t answer right away, and Paige knew she’d just told on herself in the dumbest possible way.
“Oh,” Luka finally said, casual and unbothered in that dangerous way. “Now you care where Azzi’s running?”
Paige huffed, fake annoyed but not exactly denying anything. “I always care.”
“Mmhmm. She’s P4 right now. Two-tenths behind you.”
“Okay.” She clicked a paddle shift with unnecessary force. “Copy.”
“McLaren’s ahead of both of you. Gotta keep it tight.”
“Yeah, I saw. They’re on a tear.”
She adjusted her line on the next corner, just to shave off a tenth, maybe two. It worked. The Ferrari responded like it had something to prove, the kind of balance she hadn’t felt since Monza. Still, the McLarens looked quick — maybe too quick for comfort. Paige didn’t mind, not really. It made things interesting.
And besides, she was leading the world championship.
And Ferrari was running away with the constructors’.
She didn’t need to dominate every weekend. She just needed to finish higher than Azzi.
And that was becoming harder.
“She’s closing in,” Luka said a few laps later, a mild warning in his tone.
Paige didn’t answer. Just opened the throttle on exit and pushed.
–
Dr. Liao’s office was always cold, no matter what country they were racing in. Paige knew better than to complain when the doctor liked it that way. “Keeps the brain alert,” she always said, which didn’t make a ton of sense to Paige, but she wasn’t the one with two medical degrees and a license to ground drivers.
So she just sat still on the edge of the padded exam table, hoodie sleeves pushed to her elbows, waiting for the light to turn green on the retinal scan.
“Still a little photophobic?” Dr. Liao asked gently, tapping something into her tablet without looking up.
“Less than I was,” Paige said. “More when I’m tired. Or if I forget my tinted visor.”
“You haven’t forgotten it, though.”
“No,” Paige smirked. “Scared of you.”
Dr. Liao smiled. “Good. I like that you’re scared of me.”
They moved through the rest of the checkup, reflexes, balance, peripheral tests. It was routine by now. Paige knew the drill and the doctor knew her, enough to know when something small was off. This time, there wasn’t. Paige passed clean.
“You rested well during the break?” Dr. Liao asked, her tone lighter now.
Paige shrugged, stretching her neck as the doctor wrote a final note. “Montana for a bit. With my mom.”
Dr. Liao raised a brow, but not unkindly. “That’s new.”
“Yeah, I know,” Paige said. “Just… wanted to see her.”
“How was it?”
“Nice. Cold. My mom gave me a lecture.”
“As she should,” Dr. Liao replied, smiling. “You’re good to go. Try not to hit anything hard.”
“Only curbs.”
“That’s a lie.”
Paige laughed.
–
The meeting room smelled faintly of engine grease and lemon cleaner. Azzi’s engineer, Mateo, always brought a bottle of something citrus-scented and sprayed the corners like a dad preparing for houseguests. Luka was already seated, coffee in hand, and Azzi had her legs kicked up on the chair next to hers, scrolling through data on her iPad.
Fred was running point on the strategy discussion. Calm, clipped French-English, all business. The McLarens had shown top-line speed in practice — more than expected — but both cars had struggled with degradation. Tire wear was going to matter, and the engineers knew it.
“It’s a long-game race,” Mateo said. “We don’t win this in the first fifteen laps.”
Luka nodded. “We can take them. They’ll push early, try to break you. Let them. Make them overheat.”
Paige watched Azzi glance at her then, just once, like they were both already thinking the same thing. They’d done this dance before. Managed races better than anyone else on the grid. The Ferrari wasn’t just fast now. It was smart. Smooth. Balanced.
Paige felt it in her ribs already. They could win this.
The meeting wrapped and most of the engineers filtered out. Some off to brief the mechanics, others to check real-time sims. Azzi lingered, eyes still scanning her tablet. Paige had her AirPods in, low but clear. A beat-heavy R&B track hummed gently in her ears.
Azzi looked up. “What do you listen to before meetings?”
Paige blinked, pulling out one bud. “Music.”
Azzi deadpanned. “No kidding.”
Paige smirked. “Mostly R&B. Sometimes gospel.”
Azzi gave her a look — a curious one, not mocking. “Gospel?”
“Yeah,” Paige shrugged. “When I’m stressed. Or if the flights are bad. Just… helps.”
Azzi nodded slowly, like she was adding it to some invisible file in her head.
“You in the gym a lot?” she asked after a beat.
Paige tilted her head, amused by the sudden pivot. “Between seasons, yeah. Like…five, six days a week. During the season? Less. I try to get a lift in when we’re not traveling but…”
“But you’re always traveling.”
“Exactly.”
Azzi nodded. “You can tell, though.”
Paige blinked. “Tell what?”
“That you lift,” Azzi said plainly. “Your arms.”
Paige looked at her, unsure if that was meant to be neutral or not, and Azzi didn’t elaborate. Just turned her attention back to her screen like she hadn’t just said something that made Paige hyper-aware of how close they were standing.
It hung there a second, unsaid, before Azzi stood and brushed her hoodie sleeves down.
“I’ll see you at briefing.”
“Yeah,” Paige said, still holding the AirPod in her hand. “See you.”
–
This might be the worst (or best) decision of Paige’s life.
It was late, but not late enough for the world to sleep. The streets below were still awake with the hum of Baku’s nightlife, headlights catching on wet cobblestones and music spilling from narrow windows. The hotel hallway was quieter, carpeted and still, muffled enough that Paige could hear the small knock of her own heartbeat in her ears as she lifted her hand and knocked gently on the door.
She didn’t wait long.
The door swung open and there was Azzi, barefoot in black sweatshorts and a threadbare Georgetown hoodie, curls pulled back and eyes soft like she’d been half expecting this.
“Hey, P,” she said, voice low.
Paige stepped inside without a word, just nodded, lips pressed tight together in a way she knew would betray her nerves. Azzi let the door fall shut behind them and leaned her back against it, folding her arms loosely across her chest.
For a long moment, neither of them moved. The hotel room smelled faintly of vanilla lotion and whatever tea Azzi had brewed earlier. The scent was warm, lived-in, hers.
Paige didn’t sit down. She stood there like she had to say it on her feet.
“I don’t know what we are,” she said finally, quietly. “I think I want to. Know, I mean.”
Azzi tilted her head slightly, but she didn’t interrupt.
Paige swallowed. “I didn’t come here for anything casual. Not tonight. Not anymore.”
Azzi’s mouth twitched, not into a smile, but something close. “You don’t have to say it P. I know.”
“Well… I did,” Paige said. “Because I’ve been… holding back. From you. And I think you’ve known it. And I think you let me.”
Azzi nodded slowly. “I didn’t want you to have to tell anyone anything you weren’t ready to say out loud. Especially not about being gay.”
Paige looked down, thumb brushing the inside of her palm. “I told my mom… About us, I mean.”
Azzi’s eyebrows lifted, just slightly. “Yeah?”
“She might’ve… nudged me.”
Now Azzi did laugh, soft and warm and familiar. “I figured.”
There was a pause, the kind that only made sense when two people had lived in the same small tension for months. Azzi pushed off the door finally, walked closer — not fast, not slow — and stopped in front of Paige, close enough that Paige could smell her shampoo. Close enough that her fingers itched to touch her.
“You came to me,” Azzi said, searching her face. “I waited for that. I’m proud of you for that..”
“I know.”
“I want to be with you,” Azzi said simply. “Not for anyone else. Not for the media. Just for me and you.”
“I want that too,” Paige said, and her voice cracked just slightly on the last word. “Even if I’m still… you know..”
“I know that too.”
They stood there, barely apart, the city still humming outside but far, far away from this room.
“It’s better to be private anyway,” Azzi said. “Cleaner. Easier. And we don’t have to care what anyone else thinks. I just want… you.”
Paige let her breath go — shaky, but full. She took one step forward and Azzi didn’t move, just let her. Their foreheads touched, then Azzi’s hand slid to Paige’s wrist.
Then her gaze dipped.
“Alright,” Azzi said with a little smirk. “Now I wanna see those biceps without the sweatshirt in the way.”
Paige let out a laugh, shaky but real.
“You’ve been thinking about my arms?”
Azzi didn’t blink. “They haunt me.”
Paige grinned, finally, and reached down to peel off the hoodie. Her t-shirt underneath clung to her skin. Warm from nerves and night and maybe from how hard her heart was still pounding.
Azzi’s eyes lingered.
Paige flushed. “You’re ridiculous.”
“I’m sincere,” Azzi said. “And sincere people deserve front row seats.”
“Is that so?”
Azzi’s fingers curled into the hem of Paige’s shirt. “You’re the one who came over at midnight babe.”
Paige exhaled. “Yeah. I did.”
And she didn’t regret it.
Not even for a second.

DARLING PROFILE:
Honest
To Sanemi, there is nothing more worthless than liars - with the exception, possibly, of demons. He doesn’t understand why one would skate around the truth, and in his eyes it’s a sign of weakness, of an unwillingness to face reality and to cheat themselves.
Needless to say, he wouldn’t tolerate a partner who is prone to lying, who lets falsities slip from their lips like it’s nothing. He wants to know that his partner won’t front anything, that each word and phrase that they speak is nothing but how they feel, their honest thoughts and feelings.
Trust means a lot to him, and because it’s so difficult for him to fully open up, to allow himself to becomes vulnerable, he’s quite selective with who he lest see the real Sanemi Shinazugawa, the real man who wants nothing more than for the ones he loves to be safe and happy.
He needs a darling who won’t bullshit him, who can hold his respect and take a slight weight off his shoulders by knowing that they won’t ever lie to him.
It doesn’t mean his paranoia diminishes in any sense of the word, but the sentiment is still nice - it’s pleasing to him that when his darling is finally giving in and telling him in a defeated, resigned voice that they love him too, when he’s forcing out a compliment that sounded wonderful in his head but strange once it passed him that the small smile and soft ‘thanks’ they give is real.
He needs to comfort of knowing that his darling is authentic, that they’re showing their real selves to him, and with each glimpse he sees he only falls more and more in love.
Opinionated
There is no doubt that Sanemi works tirelessly to be as powerful as he can, that it’s his sole drive in life to kill and defeat demons. He’s a man fueled by adrenaline and hate for the man-eating creatures, and he desires a darling who is similarly motivated.
His darling doesn’t need to have a tragic past or anything of the sort, but he appreciates someone who is somewhat of a spitfire.
He likes women who can challenge him, and if his darling is able to keep up with him and even occasionally be better than him at something, it’s a sure fire way for him to grow interested.
He loves the idea of his darling being capable and independent (ironic, considering the way he grows to coddle his darling and let his overprotectiveness convince him that they’re utterly helpless without him), and a darling who’s able to showcase this personality trait gets him ever so slightly flustered.
He likes someone who can stand up to him, who doesn’t let him boss them around, and while he’ll want them to be complacent and listen to him once he has a more solidified role in their life, there’s something so incredibly attractive about them having their own mind and opinion.
He may act like it irritates him at first, butting heads with his darling and even occasionally complaining about how headstrong they are, but it’s one of the very first things that catches Sanemi’s attention and keeps it.
(That and, of course, the color of their eyes, the sway of their hips, the lilt of their voice, and myriad other qualities that make him gape like some lovesick school boy. Pathetic.)
Kind
On the flip side, Sanemi is also wildly attracted to a darling who is a truly kind person.
They can be opinionated, hardheaded, competitive, any number of things that leave them labeled as a strong personality, but it’s in the moments where Sanemi sees how truly compassionate they are that his feelings really become cemented.
He’s had to bury his own compassion and empathy down over the years, hardening his shell and playing into the character so well that it’s become essentially his real self, and to see his darling able to be so kind and loving to the people around them makes him wildly flustered and jealous.
It reminds him of his old self, and while that brings its own heavy baggage, there’s something freeing and so very calming about it, like some long lost puzzle piece is slotting into place because it just feels right.
And when his darling turns that kindness onto him, Sanemi’s genuinely at a loss for words. The first time they scold him for getting injured and help tend to his wounds, he’s already putty in their hands. He’s momentarily struck silent when his darling presents to him a small gift from a nearby market, the gift itself meager and not something Sanemi particularly wants, but there’s something about the gesture that gets his heart racing, flattered and unsure why they’d be giving someone like him something.
It’s a quality that he subconsciously looks for, and though he’d never admit it, it’s difficult for him to not notice just how kind his darling would be in the context of motherhood. They’d be great with children, he’s sure, and while he doesn’t want to bring any children into the world while it's still crawling with demons, he’s nursing the quiet, embarrassed dream of his darling carrying his children and heading a loving, large family.
It’s the stuff of his fantasies, the kind of thing that makes him flush and get irritated at sappy at is, but with each kind gesture and compliment, his darling only makes it harder and harder to not dream of it.
Brave
On many levels, to become a person Sanemi respects you’d have to be brave. He simply doesn’t tolerate those who are weak-willed or meek, and a darling who’s more willing to put themselves out there or stand up for others is extremely attractive to him.
His darling doesn’t need to be a risk-taker, but he appreciates someone is willing to go outside of their comfort zone every once in a while. This is especially true when it comes to interacting with him. His tough demeaner scares most people off, so his darling would need to be willing to tough it out and stand up to him in order to dig past his rough exterior and get at the soft, vulnerable side of him.
It makes him proud, really, when his darling does something that he deems brave or difficult for them. It fills him with a sense of accomplishment, feeling genuinely happy for them because he’s so very proud when they achieve even basic things.
He's extremely observant and picks up on even minute aspects of his darling’s personality, and so he’s very in touch with what’s within his darling’s comfort zone and what isn’t.
This trait is by and large a positive for him, however there are times when it becomes the bane of his existence; if they do something he deems stupid or unnecessary and puts them in danger he becomes very, very angry. He’s paranoid in every sense of the word, terrified that his darling will die or somehow disappear, leaving him behind to be all alone, losing just another person he’s come to love.
(Though, love is perhaps not quite the word for it – needs, maybe, or even adores, just with a sense of finality that scares even Sanemi.) His darling’s braveness is a double-edged sword, and once they’re under his lock and key, he’s trying to cut down on their ability to act on this as much as possible, not only for their safety but also his sanity.
GENERAL YANDERE TRAITS:
Protective
As a general rule, Sanemi’s expression of his feelings towards you is rather indirect. He’ll never outright confess that he’s in love with you until very, very late into his obsession, and by that time you’ll have already been trapped by his side for at least a few months, already uncomfortably aware that he feels something for you, even if he won’t put a name on it.
He’s not traditionally romantic in any sense, and while he does harbor fantasies about being all soft and mushy with you, he can’t seem to allow himself to act on these desires, particularly towards the beginning of his infatuation.
(He’ll spend his nights laying awake, staring at the ceiling while his fingers trace patterns against the scars on his chest, imagining they’re your own softer, prettier hands, that you’re laying beside him and lulling him to sleep with your touch and soft voice, that you’re telling him that you love him and that you feel so safe with you, Sanemi. Idly, he wonders whether you’re put off by the scars – you’ve never mentioned it, sure, but Sanemi isn’t stupid. He knows you’re too nice and perhaps too intimidated by him, but he still bites his lip and wonders whether you wouldn’t mind them, if you’d like them, if you’d be attracted to them, even… And suddenly his fingers feel like fire because now he’s imagining how it would feel to have your lips trail the scarred skin instead and oh god-)
He’s not particularly overt with many aspects of his obsession, with a few stark exceptions – namely, Sanemi is very, very overprotective of you. Call it a result of a traumatic childhood and adult life or perhaps even a coping mechanism, but once his feelings for you begin to fester, your safety becomes his number one priority.
And really, isn’t it understandable?
Seeing humans get slaughtered on a daily basis constantly reminds him that you’re weak. Sure, he’s a Hashira and risks his life with every breath, but you’re you. You’re painfully unprepared to handle a confrontation with a demon, and with each new violent, gory death he sees, Sanemi becomes more and more aware of this.
It’s maddening, really, because he’ll be out on a mission and be just a hair too late to save some poor civilian woman and oh, her hair color is so very similar to yours – from a distance it almost looks like you. Your faces aren’t similar, though, and as Sanemi runs past the fresh corpse in pursuit of the monster, he’s breathing a sigh of relief because for the smallest, briefest moment he was almost convinced that that was you.
And later that night, as he sits down alone in his quiet, empty mansion, every blink of his eyes is flashing an image of you in her position, scarlet blood staining your skin and tears drying against your cheeks. It makes him grit his teeth, pacing around the room and clutching onto his sword hilt, muttering under his breath about how you’re driving him crazy and this shit needs to stop, I have to stop, this has to stop…
But he still finds himself dashing off to the modest room you call home, anger flaring when he notices you’ve left your window open, mentally berating you and promising to sternly remind you tomorrow to not be so careless.
Wide eyes peer into your bedroom to catch sight of you peacefully sleeping, and he sucks in a breath at the sight. You’re just so pretty – all soft and warm in your bed, lips parted ever so slightly, the slope of your nose catching his eye, the slow rise and fall of your chest.
(He’ll stop to match his own breathing with yours, palm pressing against the glass of the window, unable to stop staring even as he calls himself pathetic and a creep for watching you sleep. It’s just calming in a way he can’t describe, and when he finally forces himself to move some thirty minutes later, the cycle only restarts as he steps foot back in his home.)
His anxiety that you’re unable to protect yourself manifests pretty early into his obsession – and you’ll notice, too. He’s unusually concerned with all aspects of your health and safety – he’s always asking when you’ve last eaten, what you had, if you’re still hungry, when you last had protein or a vegetable or drank water. And while he’s trying to be as civil and nonchalant as he can manage, he’s still staring, looming over you and looking at you with an intensity that makes you feel so very small, your answer more of a question than an answer.
And if he doesn’t like the answer, you’re being dragged to his own personal kitchen, all the while he’s grumbling about how you’re so irresponsible, can’t even feed yourself on your own, meanwhile he’s already boiling water and cutting vegetables, having forced you to sit on the most plush cushion he owns.
And you will be eating everything he feeds you – when you seem hesitant, he's threatening with a disturbingly serious I won’t let you leave until that tray is clean, the calmness and sincerity in his voice driving you to immediately pick up your utensils.
Typically, his cooking isn’t bad – perhaps ever so slightly charred, but it’s cooked to your tastes and preferences (though he never explicitly asked about them), and he’s always looking at you while you dine, those wide eyes of his never seeming to blink as he surveys every possible detail about you.
(Really, he’s doing two things – firstly, he’s obsessively checking over every aspect of your eating habits. How many times do you chew before you swallow? Which foods do you start eating first, and do you eat section by section or a little bit of everything? Do you blow on your foods if they’re too hot, your pretty lips puckering into a cute little ‘o’ that makes him suck in a breath? But even aside from that he’s staring, transfixed, because just last night he was dining alone at this table, solemnly chewing at his food while imagining your presence beside him, fantasizing about the day when you’re eating together, perhaps even swapping stories of the day or complimenting him or telling him that you look so handsome today Sanemi, it’s kind of pissing me off… Just the thought makes him sit up straighter, unconsciously puffing out his chest because he wants you to be very, very aware of the muscles lining every inch of his body.)
And even aside from food, his protectiveness is apparent in the way he treats you – he’s always quickly gazing over your body, checking for any signs of cuts, scrapes, bruises, or limps, the surveying genuinely clinical rather than perverse.
(Of course, later that night he’ll remember the details with a slightly lewder twist – wondering how soft your thighs must be and letting his hands flex into a fist in an effort to grab onto something, even though it can’t be you. He’s imagining exactly how those nipples of yours must look like, imagining in detail the way they’d look all pebbled, the skin soft and warm and god, he bets you’d taste sweet, like some sort of heaven.)
He’s refusing to leave your side when you walk into town, always trailing at your arm and constantly glowering at the people around you, his excuse something related to checking for demon activity in the crowd – you don’t mention that it’s daytime.
(He’s always raising a brow when men approach you, rage simmering just below the surface alongside an underlying sense of anxiety and insecurity because while he may be the most capable of protecting you, the kinder, gentler man that calls you beautiful at the small morning market may be more capable of winning your heart. And so, when they get too close, he’s quick to place himself between the two of you, a scowl on his face and his tone a mix of condescension and threatening when he tells him to get lost, one more step and I slice your arm off. It’s protection, sure, because who knows what these men could want from you, but the small, possessive part of him is smug when the man scurries off, his worries momentarily quelled because you’re still next to him, not that stranger.)
He’s pessimistic about people by nature, always assuming the worst, and so Sanemi accompanies you every free moment he possibly can, acting as your shadow and impossible to get away from. It’s irritating, really, because even if you fight and bicker with him about it, requesting that he please leave you alone because it scares you to have him hanging off of you like that, he’ll only resort to following you from a few meters behind, blending in with the crowd but still keeping those eyes on you, hand always tightly clutched around the hilt of his sword just in case your safety is threatened.
He knows it’s stalking, sure, and he reprimands himself for his weakness and inability to control himself, but the moment you’re out of his sight panic is racing through him, his breathing getting shallow and his skin feeling hot because fuck fuck fuck this isn’t happening, you’re not gone you can’t be gone please oh god where are you –
He’s running as quickly as he can to check behind every corner, desperation to find you so potent that it bars him from feeling embarrassed, only calming once he finds you. He’ll grasp onto your shoulders once he does, his grip nearly bruising as he demands to know where you’ve been, practically yelling at you to tell him if you’re hurt, if anyone bothered you, if you’ve been attacked or if you’re scared.
It’s only when you wince or beg him to back off that he does, freezing up and letting his mouth fall open stupidly, before suddenly jumping back as if touching you pains him, clenching his fists and gritting his teeth, disappointment and anger in himself for injuring you rolling through him.
He treats you like you’re delicate, fragile, breakable, and no matter how often you tell him – and prove to him – that you’re not, Sanemi refuses to acknowledge it.
After all, you needing protection gives him purpose. It gives him justification to be around you, to be allowed in your presence – it makes him think he might, just maybe, be worthy of your love. And no matter how pathetic it makes him feel to admit it, Sanemi would do absolutely anything to get you looking at him and needing him like he needs you.
Anything.
Possessive
And it’s palpable. Sanemi is many things, but subtle is not one of them – and while he may be decent at masking many aspects of his obsession with you, his possessive side is certainly not one of them.
He’s easily jealous, always suspecting the worst of people that approach you. The man that comes up to ask you for directions obviously has an ulterior motive, perhaps wanting to ogle you or get just a hair too close to your body for Sanemi’s comfort.
The older man that accidentally bumps into you as he walks with his cane may seem innocent, but Sanemi’s immediately scowling, eyeing the man like a hawk because many old men seem to feel much too entitled and much too confident in bothering younger, attractive women, and he’ll be damned before he lets some old creep harass you.
(A bit hypocritical, all things considered, because while Sanemi may be your age, he’s significantly more of a creep – the way he’s constantly following you, constantly thinking of you, imagining your smile and your laugh and of what he’s sure is a very warm and oh so fucking wet place between those plush thighs of yours. The old man would probably only touch you – Sanemi wants to do much, much more.)
And so, a large portion of his possessiveness stems from his own protectiveness. He firmly believes that no one else is capable of protecting you to the level and degree that he can. He’s a Hashira, unafraid to throw himself into danger for a cause he fully believes in, so why should he be afraid to put himself on the line in order to keep you safe and sound?
Slaughtering demons is still his life’s mission, sure, but somehow you’ve wormed your way in, too, and Sanemi finds it increasingly difficult to simply ignore how much of an effect you have on him. And even as much as he tries to deny his feelings in the beginning, praying and hoping that they’re simply temporary, it becomes very, very difficult to force himself to not care when he sees anyone else speaking to you.
And honestly, a lot of the anger comes from the fact that you have never been this familiar and carefree when conversing with Sanemi – you never smile at him like you do with this new man, all teeth and rounded cheeks and glowing eyes. It’s cute, adorable, beautiful even, but it’s also infuriating, making Sanemi’s blood boil and something ugly and uncomfortable press against his ribs.
Other men always seem to be able to more easily speak with you – they’re wittier, better at complimenting you, managing to make you laugh and smile in a way that hurts Sanemi to see. It’s painful, more than anything, and early into his obsession it’s moments like these that show him that no matter how he tries to convince himself that his feelings for you aren’t as strong or potent as he thinks, he’s wrong.
He needs you in a way that simultaneously frustrates and terrifies him. He hasn’t felt a connection and genuine desire in such a long time that he doesn’t even recognize the feeling at first – it takes him seeing you interact with men over a prolonged period of time to even understand the nature of his infatuation, realizing that instead of mere irritation he’s feeling, it’s something deeper, harsher, more personal.
It’s something that makes it hard to breath, his fists clenching and his legs feeling like lead, dread settling deep in his chest because oh god, what does he do?
He tends to act before thinking when it comes to you, his body seeming to react before he even has a moment to process what he’s seeing, and this is certainly no exception when another man approaches you. He’ll be quick to step in, but as Sanemi’s obsession continues on, he becomes more and more torn about his possessive tendencies.
By and large, he’s lucid about the nature of his feelings for you. He knows what he’s doing is wrong, and as time passes and his love for you only seems to grow exponentially, he begins to wonder whether interfering with potential lovers of yours is really the correct move. He’s horribly jealous, of course, barely able to keep himself from hurling the moment he sees you interacting with anyone else, but there’s something else there, sitting just below the surface and giving him ever so slight pause.
It’s guilt, the idea that he’s becoming unreasonably possessive and territorial over you when he really has no right to. After all, thinking of you as his woman makes him feel good, his chest feeling all tingly and his cheeks going hot, but it’s not really true, is it?
You’re not his – he’s just an admirer, a stalker who desperately wishes he could call out to you and have you smile at him, look at him, let him wrap you in his arms and even press a kiss or two against his trembling lips. But you’re not – and it’s difficult for Sanemi to rationalize that the longer his obsession goes on.
And so, by the times that he’s a few months into accepting his feelings for you, Sanemi tries to limit his interventions into your interactions with others to only situations where you’re uncomfortable or in danger. And it’s noble, truly – but the problem arises from the fact that Sanemi is the one judging when this occurs, deciding when someone is bothering you.
His mood plays a huge role in this judgement decision, his moodiness and however long he's been away from you or gone without interacting with you swaying his decision. If he’s been particularly absent from your life for the last few days or weeks, Sanemi is believing that everyone has ill intentions with you – every man that glances at you, even every elderly woman that compliments your eyes or your figure.
They all want you, and it makes him panic, growing anxious and terrified that someone will snatch you away from him, that he’ll lose you and with you every bit of happiness and calm you make him feel. It’s a panic response, more than anything, and he’ll immediately rush in, sometimes not even caring how you grow irritated and frustrated that he always seems to just appear, despite the fact that you have the situation under control.
It’s a mixture of genuine worry for your safety and selfish desire to keep you all to himself that motivates him, and you’ll notice a stark difference in his behavior once he’s got you stolen away in his estate. He won’t directly reveal his feelings to you, but his sense of ownership over you will become much more apparent with the way he’s always providing for you, giving you all sorts of expensive gifts and getting only the best foods for you, doing anything and everything to get you to like him, to get you to become willingly his and to show you that no one else could treat you as well or love you as wholly.
He’s a prideful man, sure, but when it comes to you everything flies out the window – he’s barely able to conceal his desperation for you, and the defense is so weak that you’ll spot the cracks immediately. You’ll be able to tell just how badly he needs you to admit that you’re his, his control over your life worsening with every day that passes because he simply can’t stand knowing that you aren’t utterly, completely his.
And really, would it be so bad to give in? There’s something romantic about a man who wants you so badly that he’s so hyper fixated on keeping you his and only his, isn’t there? Something exciting, something flattering, something raw?
Sanemi sure hopes you think so, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter – he can’t stop himself, and you will become his at the end of the day.
Shy
But in an extremely specific way – he doesn’t shy away from interacting with you per say, but it’s very, very difficult for him to become completely open and vulnerable with you.
He’s simply too closed off – he’s entirely unused to having anyone close in his life, his few relationships held quietly close to his heart and rocky, to say the least. (His love for Genya, for example, or even the comradery he feels for Obanai and his fellow Hashira, though he’s much more expressive than he realizes.)
He’s simply not good with words, often finding himself saying things he doesn’t mean or speaking with a tone entirely unreflective of what he feels. And as a result, he struggles with the idea of opening himself up to you. You’re simply too important to him – you’re his everything now, the woman he wants to protect and keep safe above all else.
And while he’s not deluded enough to believe that you can understand him simply by looking at him, Sanemi hopes and prays that his actions are enough to convey the depth and nature of his feelings.
(Though, he’s often unsure of whether he wants you to really understand just how strong his dependence on you really is. Perhaps it would be better if you didn’t know that he can’t spend a single hour without passing thoughts of you sifting through his mind – a simple glance at a cloud has him thinking it vaguely looks like your hair, the shape making the corner of his lip turn up ever so slightly, his fingers subconsciously rubbing together and imagining the texture against his skin. He doesn’t want you to know that sometimes, when he’s sitting alone and eating the rather bare-bones, plain meal he’s cooked for himself, he’ll set a second plate, biting back his pride and quietly speaking into the air, pretending that you’re sitting there and entertaining him, nodding along to his words and encouraging him after a particularly difficult mission or seeing you getting just a tad too friendly with another man.)
Really, a lot of the fear of opening himself up comes down to Sanemi’s lucidity about his feelings for you. He has no romantic experience, true, but he’s not stupid – he’s aware that it’s unusual to be this attached when the two of you are really only platonically involved, even as much as he yearns to take things further.
He understands that it’s not normal to be so hyper fixated and concerned on your health and safety, always having a moment of clarity as he scolds you for wearing shoes that are worn down enough to hurt the soles of your shoes, or for not drinking water all day.
He’s very aware that it’s wrong of him to be following you home and keeping an eye on you without your knowledge or consent, and truthfully he’s afraid to see your reaction when you realize just how truly depraved he’s become for you. He's sure that you’ll find him repulsive – maybe you’ll curse him out, calling him a freak and a creep and even a monster for invading your personal privacy and space on such a regular basis.
(You’d be mortified, he’s sure, to find out that he often lets himself into your apartment during the day, knowing you’ll be at a friend’s place for the next few hours and wandering back after following you there, the familiar scent of you calming him immediately once he steps inside. He’s sure you’d be angry to know that he’s thumbing at each and every item of clothing you own, memorizing the feel of the fabric, running his fingers along the inside just to pretend to feel your skin, finding that this is the closest thing he can get to touching you. He’s sure you’d be mad to know that he’s picked up your pillow, hugging it to his chest and pressing his face against it, deeply inhaling and even planting a few unsure, rather stiff kisses against the material, wishing with a sort of boyish hope that tonight you’ll happen to press your face against that specific spot as you sleep.)
He’s naively nursing the hope that you’d by some miracle be okay with his more covert behaviors, wishing that you secretly feel as strongly for him as he does you. But even then Sanemi doesn’t let himself slide too deeply into that thinking, aware that it’s dangerous to become so detached from reality. You will be horrified, and he will be absolutely shattered to see the way you’ll flinch away from him, how you’ll look at him with fear and disgust in your eyes.
(And really, the pathetic thing is that while Sanemi will be ashamed of your newfound perception of him, he can’t deny that he’d be absolutely giddy to have you looking at him, your attention entirely on him even if it’s negative. And that only serves to fill him with more self-loathing, something ugly and heavy settling against his chest at the thought because it really is awfully pitiful that simply your attention is enough to have his knees feeling weak, his cheeks tingling and his palms growing sweaty because oh, you see him.)
And so, Sanemi does his best to avoid broaching the subject of how he feels about you. Instead, he tries every possible method he can think of to express himself through actions.
He doesn’t have much as a reference point, both his career and his comrades not exactly ideal sources of healthy, loving relationships, but at a certain point Sanemi becomes too desperate to ignore his few resources. He needs you to see him, to smile at him and acknowledge him, and so he bites his pride and awkwardly approaches Kanroji about it.
He’s not exactly overjoyed to be asking for her advice, but she’s the only one he feels has any sort of idea what you could possibly be looking for in terms of romantic gestures. (He’d also considered asking Shinobu, but he’d immediately crossed that idea out upon realizing that not only would Shinobu likely tease him in the moment, she’d very likely never let it go, constantly holding it over his head that the Sanemi Shinazugawa needed advice on how to woo a woman. At least Kanroji would be kind about it.)
He’s approaching her and asking as nonchalantly as he can manage whether women like men to give them flowers, escort them from location to location, cook for them, where women like to be touched (with a very, very quick clarification of not in a weird way immediately following the question), or any number of other things. And Kanroji, while suspicious of his intentions, is more than happy to gush about the small things that make women swoon. And Sanemi is hanging onto every word – pressing for details about what specific compliments to shower you with, what small gifts he should consider picking up on his missions to bring home to you, what tone of voice he should be using instead of his usual gruff, irritated lilt.
Sanemi is quick to try and instill some of these ideas into his ‘relationship’ with you – he spends easily an hour biting his lip and diligently searching through every single flower at the shop, his hands slightly trembling when he hands you the small bouquet, struggling to make eye contact as he quietly – and with something almost akin to a tremor in his voice – tells you that your kimono is beautiful, the statement almost phrased like a question.
It’s the closest Sanemi is willing to get to admitting his feelings in times like these, and up until the point where he steals you away into his own abode, these sporadic bursts of confidence and nerves will leave you with whiplash because mere moments later he’ll be growling at a drunk man approaching you, threats slipping from his lips and his aura suddenly switching from bashful, almost schoolboy-esque to deadly serious.
And once he’s been forced you kidnap you, this behavior mostly continues. He still doesn’t want to fully confess everything, but he’s trying his absolute hardest to make you as happy as possible – going out of his way to keep you comfortable and satisfied, guilt eating away at him and making him overcompensate by treating you like you’re royalty.
With time, he’ll slowly become more open to you – that mask will slip ever so slightly, bits of his true feelings shining through. He’ll accidentally let it slip that he knows something about you that he shouldn’t, cluing you into his behaviors revolving around the stalking and rifling through your things.
It’ll be the middle of the night and he’s suddenly jolted awake after a particularly graphic nightmare, half asleep as he rushes out of his bed and practically runs to find you. He’s frantic to check that you’re still in the bed he’s set up for you, his breathing only calming down when he sees your still form, a declaration of love, adoration, and relief slipping from his lips that you happen to hear and wonder at how he can be so sappy and whipped.
It’s embarrassing, more than anything, but Sanemi simply struggles to be vulnerable – eventually you’ll become uncomfortably aware of just how badly he needs you, what with his growing need for your affirmations and physical touch, but the process is slow going, frustrating, confusing, even. But please be patient with him – he’s trying his best for you, really, and with every rejection and laugh when he’s attempting to open up, the less likely he becomes to completely and fully trust that you could love him, too.
DEALING WITH RIVALS:
Sanemi has always been a bit more on the aggressive side; between slaughtering demons for a living and being a bit brash in his words in his personal life, he’s never been one for handling problems with delicacy, or even really diplomacy – when he gets angry, it’s a bit all consuming.
And when you get thrown into the equation? Well, Sanemi is a lost cause – his emotions regarding you are so complex, so overwhelming and deep that the moment he feels your relationship is being threatened, he’s immediately shutting it down, attacking the threat mercilessly with everything he has because fuck, he can’t let you leave him.
When it comes to romance and love, he’s honestly quite insecure; he knows that there’s no way he’s your first choice, that someone as harsh and rude and demanding could ever possibly be the one you desire. Not to mention the fact that he’s constantly putting his life on the line, the gamble he’s playing on whether he’ll live to see the light of day every night. And he’s not sure about the scars the job produces, too, because while he normally wears them as a badge of pride to signal his toughness and battle experience, he’s not so sure you’d share the same positive response to them.
(It’s such a constant worry for him that the moment you’re in his vicinity, he’s torn between leaving his uniform wide open to show off his sculpted pectorals and abs and simultaneously wanting to cover up, terrified that you’ll find his scarred and calloused body upsetting, repulsive.)
He knows he’s not the ideal man, but there’s a part of him that’s desperately clinging onto the idea that maybe, just maybe you love him too, that you’re just as happy being with him, that you need him as badly as he needs you. It’s unrealistic, though, and in his heart of hearts he knows it and berates himself for even entertaining the idea that you see him as anything more than an acquaintance (or a friend at most).
And yet, the moment that he sees another man – one that’s arguably more similar to what he’s sure your type must be - all reason gets thrown out the door. He’s gritting his teeth as he sees another man approaching you, talking to you, even so much as looking at you – it’s a threat to the relationship he’s precariously building between the two of you, a possibility for something to drive you away from him, the mere idea scaring the absolute shit out of him.
You’re his everything, the reason he lives to see another day, and the moment your safety is compromised (because Sanemi is absolutely fucking sure that that man approaching you with a flush on his face and wide eyes has intentions that are only bad, desires racing through his heart to hurt you, leave you crying and violated and so very scared) he’s immediately wanting to interfere, to break you away from whatever son of a bitch decided to come between what’s rightfully his, what he’s devoted so much of his time and energy to – you.
And even as he realizes that this mindset is detrimental, unhealthy, potentially irreparably damaging your perception of him, Sanemi can’t find it in himself to stop. He’s just too paranoid, too terrified that you’ll be so cruelly ripped away from him.
And of course, it’s also a matter of paranoia where your safety is concerned, too – he has no faith in your ability to fight, and he’s confident that if a bigger, stronger man were to assault you in some way, you’d be hard pressed to fight him off.
(A notion that makes him sick, immediately clutching at his sword and furrowing his eyebrows, the need to see you immediately making him spring to life, already sprinting to where he knows you typically are this time of day.)
And so, Sanemi will often step in between the stranger and you, regardless of the context. And while it pisses you off when it’s a friend of yours or even a simple stranger with innocent intentions, Sanemi manages to redeem himself because every time a creep approaches you, he’s always, always there to swoop in and save you just as the weight of your situation begins washing over you.
(And Sanemi is more than happy to play your savior – just the look you give him, so full of admiration and gratitude and, dare he say, awe, is enough to make him flustered for the next week, finding himself unable to fall asleep and instead imagining your face, clutching at his pillow and squeezing his eyes shut, small whispers of your name falling past his lips.)
In retrospect, you really shouldn’t have gone out for groceries this late. It was winter time, when everything goes dark much too quickly. Before you’d known it the sun was setting and you had yet to stock up on food for the week, making you quickly race out the door and trying to catch the last few minutes of vendors. The market was just barely open, the entire town feeling oddly deserted considering how early it still was.
As nightfall descended, the sun slipping past the horizon, you find yourself carrying a bag of heavy groceries and padding back home, grunting occasionally at the heavy weight in your arms. Your home wasn’t in the best of neighborhoods, the area always feeling just slightly ominous at night, but the rather depressing sight of your empty cupboards had forced you to venture at a time you’d normally avoid leaving your front door.
Biting your lip, you let the groceries in your hand shift slightly, letting the weight shift from one arm to another. Your attention is so focused on the cloth bags in your arms that you fail to notice the figure standing at the side of the road, lounging in front of a small family-owned restaurant that was closed for the evening. His robes are a dark green color, stained with something along the front that left it dark and greasy, a bottle of something strong-smelling in his clutched fist.
You hadn’t noticed him at first, but you suddenly go stiff as he whistles, the bottle crashing to the ground and shattering. Freezing only momentarily, you quickly keep moving, trying to ignore the way the man is calling after you.
Hey, get back here, woman, he’d slurred, even audibly sounding drunk.
The rather weak torches stationed every few meters along the street make it difficult to see behind you, but you can clearly hear his footsteps getting closer.
You can also hear the distinct lack of others’ footsteps, meaning you’re totally alone with a drunk man seemingly intent on bothering you.
Gulping, you keep your shoulders low, trying to curl into yourself but keeping the same pace, hoping by some stroke of luck the man would lose interest or give up on following you. Your home was only a few blocks away, if you could just push a little further maybe you’d be able to close him off at the door, and surely he’d stop then, right? He’d be too bored waiting outside for you, surely.
Hey bitch, turn around! His hand is suddenly on your shoulder, fingertips digging tightly against your clothed skin and making you wince slightly. He’s taller than you’d thought, something that becomes frighteningly obvious as he turns you to face him.
He’s sneering, lips curling up into something ugly that makes your gut twist. His breath reeksof the same sour, alcohol-baked scent, and as he leans in, you try your best to step away, leaning away from his approach.
Please leave me alone, you try, your voice sounding pathetically weak even to your own ears. He’s strong, you can tell – the dingy clothing hid his physique, but it’s not hard to feel the way his grip tightens, the way he makes an unpleasant noise that has fear prickling up your spine.
What did you just say to me? He asks, baring his teeth and moving to cup your jaw between his fingers, pressing his thumb against your lips and pressing hard enough to make you squirm, the pressure against your teeth making your panic only grow worse. He cocks a brow at your struggling, his smile creeping up again as his free hand came up to rest at your hip, moving down and towards your middle, barely passing over your clothed navel and making you open your mouth to scream. The groceries are dropped, your fear overweighing your despair at losing your week’s salary on a single grocery run.
You’re barely able to vocalize your fear before a sudden flash of white fills your peripheral, the pressure against your mouth suddenly lessening. Your body slumps down, falling to your knees on the ground as your eyes grow wide, your breaths heavy and labored as you look upon the scene before you.
The man – your savior, is standing before you, five fingers wrapped around the man’s throat and shoving him up against the wall of the nearest shop, Sanemi’s teeth bared and his own chest rising and falling rapidly.
He’s got his free hand clutched onto the hilt of his sword, and for a brief, terrifying moment you’re sure he’ll whip his blade out, perhaps slicing into the man’s guts and leaving him a bloody, mutilated pile of bones. Some sick, malevolent part of you finds a sick sort of pleasure in the idea, but your body is moving before you can even think, struggling to your feet and moving to rush forward and stop Sanemi from acting on what you’re very aware is a quick-trigger temper.
But before you can take more than a few steps, the sound of the Hashira’s voice is ringing in your ears. It’s low, gravelly, sounding as if it’s taking every bit of his concentration and self-control to not be screaming and yelling, nasally and gravely, the words clipped and uneven as his fingers tighten.
You piece of shit, touching women without their consent, you’re fucking disgusting, rot in hell –
It’s like a mantra, Sanemi sounding so very genuine and forceful, and as you stand frozen at the intensity in his voice, his words only become darker, more sinister.
Don’t touch her, don’t you fucking dare or I swear I’ll slice your head clean off and dismember your every limb. He grins, eyes going wide. I’ll slice off your cock, too, that’d be good, huh? Can’t bother any innocent women when you’re not even a man.
He punctuates this point with a kick to man’s groin, the pained groan he lets out only making Sanemi’s smile widen. You take a small step back, but Sanemi doesn’t even seem to notice.
Anyone who touches her is dead. You hear me? You’re fucking dead.
The harasser is clawing at his hand, whimpering and wheezing as his air supply grows smaller and smaller. It’s at this point that you audibly gasp, covering your mouth with your hand and staring at him with shock, your fingers trembling and your heart racing.
That noise seems to snap Sanemi out of his trance, his muscles going rigid and his head snapping to you. His eyes widen and his lips part, the airiest whisper of your name falling from his lips, and then he’s suddenly letting go of the stranger, backing away and staring at his own hand in shock, as if he’s horrified by what his own body has done.
The man falls to the ground, curled up and coughing, but neither you nor Sanemi pay him any mind. He’s still looking at you, mouth opening and closing like a fish, mind racing as he tries to think of something to say – anything to say, really, because the way you’re looking at him right now is making his heart break, panic engulfing him because no no no now you must think he’s a violent killer and oh god you must hate him now –
He breaks the trance by rushing forward, hands immediately coming out to clutch at your shoulders, his grip noticeably softer than how he’d been choking the man. His eyes are searching over your face, glancing over every inch of your body, his breaths still coming out uneven and ragged, and Sanemi’s quickly swallowing, unsure of what to say but practically blurting out the words.
That wasn’t – I don’t – I’m not going to hurt him, I promise –
You blink at him, body stiff and unsure, but the longer he babbles on the more your muscles relax.
I wouldn’t hurt a human, I’m not a monster, I just – he was harassing you and I don’t even know what happened, I just started moving and –
You shut him up by carefully, hesitantly placing a hand over one of his, the skin contact making him suck in a sharp breath, gaze immediately zeroing in on the sight.
Your smile is only half-genuine, fear and adrenaline coursing through you, but now that the man has crawled away, cursing Sanemi out, you’re starting to calm down. You’ve spent enough time with the Hashira to know he won’t hurt you, and seeing him this worked up, this flustered and desperate to get you to believe him is proof enough that he’s telling the truth.
Stop Sanemi, I know. I understand. At that he visibly relaxes, his jaw tensing and clenching as he swallows. Thank you for saving me.
He pauses, eyebrows rising ever so slightly, before he lets out a deep, shaky exhale, nodding his head and stepping back, releasing his grip on you.
Good is all he says, still looking at you, before his grip rests once more on the hilt of his sword. He glances towards your groceries, before scowling. Are you stupid? Why the hell are you out at this hour to get groceries?
You bristle at this, familiar behavior making you shoot him a glare. Don’t judge me, not all of us can afford to have private servants cook us meals.
Sanemi scoffs. I don’t have private servants, you’re making shit up again.
You continue to bicker, still shaking slightly as you gather the groceries that fell out of the bag upon impact with the ground. Sanemi begrudgingly helps you, forcing you to let him carry both bags while he escorts you home, berating you for being out at this time the entire way.
It’s only later that night that you really truly think about what had happened, his words ringing through your mind because why had Sanemi said that? How had he even known where you were, much less that you were in danger?
You’re not sure, but as you slip under your covers and bury your face against your pillow, you find yourself brushing aside the odd coincidental nature of the encounter, instead finding yourself thankful that Sanemi was there to intervene before things got truly bad.
(Meanwhile, Sanemi is staying true to his promise of not killing any humans – though he’s quick to track down the drunk man, scoffing at the state of him. He’d fallen asleep, evidently, laying on the dirty streetcorner a ways away from your home. Rage overcomes him as he recalls the way this man had touched you, even going so far as to grope your most intimate region without your permission, anger and even a small bit of jealousy overwhelming Sanemi.
He'll certainly not kill the man, but he wasn’t lying when he promised to slice off the man’s cock – he wouldn’t miss it, would he? Besides, he tells himself as he cuts clean and quick lines, it’s for you. This way, the creep might not feel the need to harass you again, and might keep his filthy hands to himself.
And when Sanemi drops him off unceremoniously outside the doors of the nearest medical house, he can only scoff, turning his back on the bleeding man and listening as the medics immediately begin swarming him.
He doesn’t like hurting humans, sure, but for you? Well, the walk back to your home is short, and as he slips inside, standing at the foot of your bed and swallowing at the sight of your sleeping form, he feels himself visibly relax. You’re just too perfect – and as he inhales the smell of you, he knows he’d do it again if it meant keeping you safe, keeping you his.)
TAKING HIS DARLING AWAY:
Though Sanemi can’t deny the allure of domesticity with you, kidnapping you is actually something he is very strongly against. It’s a combination of factors that leave him hesitant to steal you away – he’s worried that it would permanently alter your personality, and he doesn’t want you to fear him.
He’s lucid enough to know that his feelings for you border and delve into creep territory, his penchant for following you and compulsively checking on you making it difficult to see himself as anything other than a pathetically obsessed man chasing and lusting after an innocent civilian woman.
And yet, he can’t stop himself from wanting you, needing you so badly that it physically hurts, and so Sanemi gives into his more disturbing urges with the clear, resolute promise to himself that he’ll never do anything truly drastic.
And of course, kidnapping you falls into this category. It’s the only way he can justify following you around, fantasizing about holding you and touching you and hearing you say his name. It’s the only way he can calm himself down when moments of lucidity and clarity come rushing at him, guilt clawing at his throat because why the fuck is he hovering over your sleeping figure and reaching into his trousers right now?
He doesn’t trust himself around you, and that’s only another deterrent to keeping you locked up and away with him. It’s like he’s not in control of his body when you’re present – he’s always looking at you, sneaking glances even when he explicitly tells himself not to.
(Even when he instigates a sort of punishment system for himself – he clenches his fist hard enough to draw blood or pinches himself too tightly every time he catches himself doing it, trying to break the habit. Instead, however, he finds himself littered in bruises and all sorts of crescent-shaped marks on his palms, his will-power no match for the way he needs to be looking at you constantly.)
He’s always gravitating towards you, keeping his body facing in your direction, just so that if you do something or say something he’ll be able to immediately respond, every fiber of his being hoping that you’ll reach out, that you’ll speak to him, that you’ll acknowledge him.
(Hell, he’s even lost control subconsciously – he’s puffing his chest out without thinking about it when you’re around him, subtly trying to make the deep slit in his uniform go wider so that you can see more of his corded muscles, clenching his abs tightly enough to make the definition impossible to ignore. He’s running his hands through his hair the moment someone mentions your name, swiping his bangs out of his eyes just to look presentable, just so that if you see him you’ll maybe, just maybe find him attractive and appealing.)
It’s pathetic, he thinks, and he’s terrified that once you’re stolen away by his side, trapped with him as your sole companionship and provider (an idea that does, of course, make something pleasurable and good roll up his spine), these behaviors will only get worse. If he can’t control himself when he’s still physically distant from you, who knows what he’ll feel at liberty to do once you have nowhere else to run.
He’ll never hurt you, he’s sure of it, but he really, really doubts that you’ll be comfortable with all of the things that his subconscious wants to do to you. He’s sure you don’t particularly want to be encaged in his arms while he squeezes and squeezes and squeezes, trying to get you as close as physically possible because he’s still irritated that he can’t live inside of your skin.
(But what if he crushes you, or somehow breaks your bones with the strength of his affection? It’s enough to get him biting his lip, staring down at his open palms and scowling, frustrated at himself because he knows the euphoria of touching you will make him stupid.)
He’s sure you don’t want him to hand-feed you, bringing the chopsticks up to your mouth, watching your pretty, soft lips open up and letting him place the home-cooked food against your tongue.
(And seeing you looking at him with your mouth open, taking something that he’s made and given to you against your tongue will have him flushing, swallowing heavily and having to look away because fuck he’s such a pervert and he’s ruining a sweet moment by growing unbearably hard in his trousers, and oh god – what if there’s a wet spot when he stands up? Will you notice? Fuck fuck fuck!)
It’s a recipe for disaster, not to mention the fact that your fear and hesitance would likely force you to become a shell of your former self. You’d be reduced to nothing but a skeleton of your personality, and that’s the absolute last thing Sanemi wants. He wants you – authentically, fully, as you are when you’re free and independent. And stealing you away would change that, he’s sure – and he’d never forgive himself for diminishing even a flicker of your light.
But of course, misfortune seems to follow Sanemi like some sort of sick joke – it’s only a matter of time before something terrible happens.
It’s a demon attack, likely. Perhaps some demon has noticed that a Hashira seems to hold a penchant for a particular human, and with his marechi blood they’re very, very eager to lure him out and feast on him. And in the process, you get caught in the crossfire – it’s rare that Sanemi leaves you completely and truly alone, but when he’s been summoned for a mission, he can’t exactly decline.
And so, he rushes through the job, quickly finding the demon and slaughtering it in the quickest, fastest way possible before immediately returning back to you, falling into the shadows so that he can continue to keep an eye on you, letting out a rather harsh breath when he finally spots you again, in tact and unharmed.
Except one night, as he sprints through the dark forest, he sees the very faint outline of your home and immediately his eyes go wide.
Your front door is wide open.
He generally thinks you’re rather careless about your safety, sure, but even you aren’t that bad – something is wrong. He pushes himself to run faster, harder, his breaths sounding more like wheezing as he descend on your house, immediately rushing inside and drawing his sword. The adrenaline coursing through his veins only makes him falter for a moment upon seeing his absolute worst nightmare – you’re on the ground, eyes slowly blinking and your body crumpled up, most of your visible skin covered with blood.
His nostrils flare, the sight of the demon crouching over you making his grip on the sword hilt so tight his knuckles turn white, something akin to a genuine growl coming from him.
Get the hell away from her!
He’s yelling and charging, immediately activating his breathing technique and beheading the creature before it can even react. His chest is still heaving, and despite the black mist that begins to appear on the creature’s neck, he’s immediately settling down, straddling the creature and throwing punch after punch. It’s bloody – it’s spraying all over his uniform, staining the white as his fists dig into flesh, denting and tearing and destroying, all the while Sanemi is yelling at it, cursing and calling it a vile, disgusting creature, claiming it’s trying to hurt and kill his woman.
It’s terrifying, really, and as you slowly lose consciousness you’ll find yourself feeling even more terrified, unsure of what’s happening.
And as the demon disappears, Sanemi slowly calms down, gathering his senses and immediately grabbing you, carrying you to the Butterfly Mansion as quickly as his legs can carry him. He doesn’t want to bring you home (or at least, he knows he shouldn’t), but once Shinobu has you patched up and he returns to your now blood-stained abode, Sanemi’s biting his lip, wavering.
He can’t let you come back here – not with the knowledge that you could be attacked again, not when you’re out of his sight and protection, not when you’re so very vulnerable. And so, he begrudgingly brings you back to his estate, settling you into the bedroom as far away from his own as possible.
(He’d refrained from keeping you in the room he’s spent the last few months pretending was your own, too – outfitted with all of the items he’s bought for you but been too afraid to give to you: all sorts of hairpins, beautiful weavings, flowers, even small, curtly written notes he’d been crazed enough to write in the dead of night when he just could not stop thinking of you. No, that’d be too much – he doesn’t want to overwhelm you, so he locks that room up, praying that you never, ever find out about it.)
When you awake, you’ll find yourself changed into fresh, clean clothing (soft clothing, too, the kind that you could never afford), tucked into a bed in a room you don’t recognize. The futon is soft, the sheets warm and decorated with a pattern and color that you distinctly note is a favorite of yours. Your entire body hurts, wincing as you sit up.
It’s only then that the door slides open, a tuft of white hair greeting you as Sanemi clears his throat, wide eyes glancing at every visible part of your body. He’s rather curt when he explains where you are, glossing over the why and instead cryptically reiterating that you’re safe now, so drop it.
As a captor, Sanemi is surprisingly attentive – you’d known each other before your kidnapping, of course, though he’d always seemed like a rather hot-headed, difficult man.
And those mannerisms certainly don’t change when he’s got you trapped with him – except now you can see that there’s something deeper under the surface, something vulnerable and raw and real. You’ll see it in the way that he touches you like you’re made of glass – shying away and retracting his hands just moments before they touch your skin, acting almost as if the idea of touching you repulses him.
(God, nothing could be less true – he so desperately wishes to brush his fingertips against the smooth skin of your thighs, to cup your cheeks in his palms, to press his lips against yours – softly, slowly, as if he can’t quite believe that you’re real.)
You’ll see it in the way that he has every meal cooked and prepared for you, the Wind Estate quiet and empty except for the two of you. It’s always your favorite foods, cooked with every idiosyncrasy and taste of yours in mind, with a level and degree of accuracy that will terrify you at first.
And frankly, you will be terrified at first – he’s reluctant to admit his feelings to you, sure that if you were to know the truth of the situation you’d immediately reject him, and as stupid as it is Sanemi doesn’t think he could handle your rejection. It would break him, emotionally, physically, and mentally, leaving him a shell of a man and still just as desperately, pathetically in love with you if not more so.
But the reason you’ll be terrified isn’t because of his demeanor or the way you think he feels – rather, it will become obvious very quickly that Sanemi knows much more about you than you thought. You know you’ve never told him your preferred menstrual supplies, and yet the bathroom he’s assigned to you is stocked full of the exact model and heaviness you prefer.
(It’s your own bathroom, thankfully, though when you’re asleep sometimes Sanemi will sneak in, picking up your toothbrush and letting it sit against his lips, suckling at the bristles and rifling through your trash just to find a pad or two when he knows you’re menstruating. He’d rather slice off his own hand than admit it to you, of course, but just being in a space that you regularly use makes him feel special, connected to you in a way that makes his knees weak and the smallest, faintest of smiles cross his lips.)
You’re sure you’ve never mentioned what clothing size you wear, and yet there’s a slew of brand new, beautifully made kimonos and lounging wear perfectly tailored to your body, all in a range of colors and designs that are your favorites.
(There’s also a few in a lime green material and a single, pure white one, both of which were guilty pleasures that Sanemi felt compelled to include in his orders from the local seamstresses. And if you were to wear one, willingly, during a shared meal with him? Well, don’t comment on the pink color of his cheeks, nor the way he ever so slightly stutters when he tells you that you look nice.)
Frankly, he’s a pretty good captor to have – he gives you space, and forces himself to stay away from you for most of the day in an effort to not overwhelm you. At least, at the beginning. He tells himself it’s enough to know that you’re locked up in the Wind Estate, safe and sound and perfectly removed from the danger of the outside world, but his paranoia and yearning for your company eventually drive him to spend just a hair more time with you.
Instead of giving you privacy during meals, he’ll instead knock at your door, entering with his own plate and sitting down as far away from you as possible within the room, silently eating and trying not to make his staring too obvious.
(He mentally justifies it as making sure that you don’t choke on your food, but really it’s more about seeing you enjoy what he’s made for you and knowing that you’ve eaten today. Good. He'll sharply inhale, biting back a smile as he slowly eats his own food, trying to prolong the moment.)
He spoils you with all sorts of gifts and supplies for any hobbies you may have, and while he initially doesn’t interact with you as you knit or draw or read, eventually he’ll gather the courage to ask you a question, trying (and failing) to sound nonchalant as he asks what it is that you’re drawing, how to knit, or what your favorite book is.
It’s a slow but steady process, and as time passes and you grow more and more complacent with your situation, you’ll find yourself coming to enjoy the rough, oddly charming presence of Sanemi. Even if his stalking and feelings for you become an unspoken truth, his fondness for you difficult to ignore (with the way he treats you so gently, spoils you, and very poorly hides the way his cock springs to life each time you say his name).
And so really, Sanemi feels guilty enough for being in love with you, and even more guilty for forcing you into a life of complacency – the least you could do is compliment him, right? You could at least invite him to join you for meals and walks around the modest garden of his estate. You could at least intertwine your fingers with his and pretend to not notice the way he gasps, mumbling something incoherent that sounds vaguely like your name.
Really, it’s the least you could do – and with every action, Sanemi only falls for you harder, deeper, his resolve to keep you safe, happy and his only growing.
PUNISHMENTS:
While his obsession with you alters certain parts of his personality, some characteristics remain absolutely true regardless of his feelings for you. And unfortunately, one of them is his quick-trigger temper.
You calm him, the mere sound of your voice making the tension in his muscle relax, the clenching of his jaw lessening slightly, the tensing of his shoulders becoming less pronounced. The feeling of your hand pressing against his chest makes him freeze in place, the anger simmering in his gut becoming more diluted, the rage slowly leaving him because god, you’re standing right in front of him and he can see every fine detail of your face and he can smell you and god…
You have a physical effect on him that calms him ever so slightly, but he still finds himself remarkably susceptible to rage, even with you in his vicinity.
Of course, rarely ever is he actually mad at you – early into his infatuation he’d found himself constantly irritated and enraged at you, convinced that you’d somehow purposefully made him into the lovesick fool that he is, unable and unwilling to admit to himself that it’s entirely his own doing leading to his spiral into dependence on you. He’d even tried to hate you, consciously filling his head with lies and telling himself that you were weak, a burden, only something that would slow him down. And yet, the anger was never quite real, never quite honest.
(Never directed at you, really, but more directed at himself for being so weak as to form such strong, dependent feelings on you.)
And so, Sanemi’s anger more often than not revolves around someone else – often, someone around you. Men that get too close, friends that meddle when they notice that you have Sanemi as an unwanted admirer, your boss when they treat you poorly, even strangers that are even the slightest bit rude to you.
He’ll never go far enough as to injure another human to point of death, if only because he’s still guided by morals that yearn to save humans, but Sanemi is absolutely committed to making sure that you’re treated like the royalty that he perceives you as.
(Often, any men that feel bold enough to approach you, or god forbid touch you meet a bloody, painful altercation with the Hashira, unable to do anything but be pounded into a pulp as he swings and punches, leaving them a bloody semi-conscious mess on the ground, even spitting onto them as he mutters something about being a fuckin’ monster, assaulting women like it’s nothing…)
But all that said, there are a few very specific things that can get Sanemi angry at you, too. He can forgive you lashing out at him and calling him terrible names, even openly welcoming it sometimes because he knows it’s true.
He’s mostly worried when you attempt to escape rather than angry, terrified that you’ll somehow hurt yourself or be eaten by a demon if you manage to get through the patch of wisteria trees surrounding the perimeter of his estate. Instead, his main triggers are when you injure yourself, or when you say something negative or degrading about yourself.
He’s so paranoid about your safety and health that the mere idea of you injuring yourself gets him borderline panicking, his breathing getting heavier and his hands starting to tremble as panic engulfs him because he absolutely cannot lose you, too.
He’s always quick to reprimand you, yelling at you but dressing your wounds as gently as possible, treating you as if you’re made of glass and cleaning everything perfectly to prevent any further harm. But really, what truly angers Sanemi is when you display a lack of self-respect, though he’ll never explicitly punish you.
He loves you – so much so that it physically hurts, his chest aching when he’s away from you, every muscle growing restless and anxiety settling in his gut because he needs to see you right now. He’s a worshipper in every sense of the word, and to have you disrespecting yourself and talking down to yourself in any capacity is enough to get his blood boiling. It’s two-fold, really, because not only is it an assault on your character, but it’s an assault on his, too. It’s a remark against him for thinking of you so highly, for revering you and kissing the ground you walk on. It bruises his pride and makes him defensive of you, even if it’s you yourself making the remark.
And so, Sanemi tends to grow angry, unable to comprehend how you can possibly see yourself as something less-than when he’s so utterly enraptured with every fiber of your being.
Being trapped with him means long expanses of time where you’re alone, Sanemi out on a mission or pulled away begrudgingly, and as time passes this will slowly start to affect you.
Too much alone time equates to an awful lot of staring in the mirror, fingers prodding at the skin of your cheeks or arranging your hair this way or that, furrowing your brow and trying to understand exactly what it is about you that makes Sanemi so enthralled. You can’t put your finger on it – you’re just you, and while he’s never come right out and said it, you’re very aware that Sanemi finds you beautiful.
(You’ve overheard him, after all, late at night when he’s muffling his groans and the wet schlock schlock noise is audible even through the wall separating you. It’s difficult to not hear it, after all, when he’s moaning your name as he gets close, stuttered curses and little gasps of s-so beautiful, fuck and all sorts of other praises slipping out of him as his orgasm approaches.)
It’s too much time for you to be alone and overanalyze. And even now that you’ve been with him for well over a year, now that your whole world has become Sanemi Shinazugawa, it’s too easy to let the insecurities get the best of you.
And really, you shouldn’t have ever mentioned it – later that night, when Sanemi returns home from his latest mission, he can immediately tell that something is wrong. He closes and locks the multitude of locks on the front door, glancing at you with skepticism and worry, before placing his hands on your hips and pulling you close, leaving a single long kiss against your forehead as he asks you what’s wrong. Your small mumble of nothing doesn’t convince him, but Sanemi just pushes it aside, deciding to revisit the subject after you’ve both eaten.
Dinner is quiet, and it’s halfway through that he decides enough is enough.
What the hell’s the matter with you? He’s asking, setting down his chopsticks and staring pointedly at you.
You’re not too terribly afraid of your captor by this point, but the intensity of his stare still makes you fold in on yourself slightly, embarrassment and self-consciousness eating away at you. Sanemi continues the staring, unwilling to back down, eventually scoffing and telling you to just spit it out, I’ll wait as long as it takes.
And that you believe, enough to get you blurting out a quick I’m not good enough for you to be so in love with.
It’s slurred and difficult to understand even to your own ears, but it gets Sanemi’s face twisting up, a mixture of shock and confusion making his brows knit together and that familiar scowl sit on his lips.
What the fuck? It’s all he can ask, really, because this is so out of left field and unexpected that he genuinely has no clue how to respond.
At his pointed confusion and silence, you play with your thumbs, hunger totally gone as the words start falling out of you like some sort of nervous word vomit. It’s just that I don’t really get why you’re so – so fixated on me. I’m nothing special, and before you get angry at me just know that it’s okay and I’m not trying to get away I just –
Sanemi cuts you off by rising to his feet before you can even blink, a hand snapping out to wrap around your wrist. Before you know it you’re being dragged down a series of long hallways until you come face to face with a door you’ve never set foot passed – Sanemi’s personal, private room.
Normally, when the two of you share a bed (something that has only recently begun happening, after Sanemi gathered the courage and you’ve become so touch-starved that you welcomed his presence), you sleep in the room he's had made up for you, Sanemi allowing you to stay in the quasi-comfort of your ‘own’ room rather than force you into yet another unfamiliar situation.
But you hardly have any time to gawk at the room before he’s shoving you in front of his modest mirror, the reflection of yourself making you blink twice. He's angry – you can see his face in the mirror now, and his cheeks area bright red and a few veins are standing out against his neck, a sure sign that he’s livid and is only barely able to hold himself back from acting on it.
It makes you shrink slightly, though you’re confident at this point that he won’t hurt you, at least not purposefully.
Look at yourself, he tells you, voice strained. He’s standing behind you, gripping onto your shoulders and forcing you to face yourself in the mirror.
You do as you’re told, but it doesn’t seem to satisfy Sanemi.
He groans, resting his forehead against the slope of your shoulder. Look at yourself.
A pause, then: Please.
Swallowing, you search each and every feature of your familiar face. Your eyes, nose, lips, cheeks, eyebrows, jaw, anything and everything you can think of. After a few moments, Sanemi looks at you in the mirror again, his eyebrows furrowed tightly.
Do you really not see it? He asks, and you merely shake your head.
He bares his teeth. Dammit, how can you not? How can you be so fucking blind?
It’s harsh, his words making you wince slightly, but they’re loaded with something unlike his usual rage – there’s something sweeter to it, something that feels different and gets you meeting his gaze in the mirror. The look on his face is almost pleading, and you’re struck with the realization that he’s not angry, he’s frustrated. Genuinely frustrated that you don’t seem to understand just what he sees in you.
Slowly, you bring your fingers up to your cheeks, fingertips pressing against the soft skin. Sanemi watches you with bated breath, his grip on you still tight.
Compliment yourself, he instructs, the words sounding strained. You blink at him, swallowing heavily.
You mutter out a small comment of how your eyes aren’t too terrible, and Sanemi groans at that. His hand moves from your shoulder to your chin, pinching at it and bringing you closer to the mirror. Give yourself a real compliment, or I’ll stand here all fucking day until you do.
You tell him that you have pretty eyes, and it seems to please him. He nods, almost subconsciously, keeping his grip on your chin. Damn right you do. Pretty eyes and a pretty smile. Tell me more.
He keeps you in this position for nearly an hour, forcing you to list off each and every possible compliment about your looks and personality that you can think, his gaze never wavering in intensity or sincerity as he grunts and nods at each and every one.
It’s only as your jaw starts to ache and you start to grow restless that Sanemi eventually lets go, turning you gently to face him. A finger lightly traces over the shape of your lips as he exhales, the softness of his actions and the moment making you feel light.
Don’t undersell yourself. His voice is firm, his lips set in a thin line. You’re perfect, and you need to accept that.
He covers your mouth with his hand as you part your lips to respond, shaking his head. No, none of that shit. We’re doing this every day until you decide that you’re good enough for me – until you prove to me that you respect yourself the way you should. New compliments every day, and I don’t care how hard it is for you. When you run out, I’ll step in, but you’re elaborating on everything I say. Got it?
You nod, a strange sort of tenderness welling up inside of you that only makes tears prick at the corner of your eyes because oh god, how wrong is this? Your captor, the man who stole you away and keeps you trapped inside his him, is complimenting you and it’s making you feel more loved and wanted and appreciated than you’ve felt in your whole life. There’s just something so sincere about his push for you to understand just how wonderful he thinks you are that makes your lower lip wobble, the way he’s actually genuinely enraged by your insecurities and the absurdness of them making your nose tingle.
It's sweet, something your captor really shouldn’t be, and as tears slip down your cheeks Sanemi awkwardly presses you against his chest, silent as his grip grows progressively tighter. He’s no stranger to insecurity, and as he drags you to the mirror the next day and the next after that, you’ll slowly find yourself believing him when he says that you’re kind, that you’re beautiful, that he wants you more than he’s ever wanted anything else in his life.
It's strange and you may hate yourself for it, but as the days pass you’ll find yourself growing more and more fond of Sanemi, his commitment to improving your self-esteem feeling like the more intimate thing anyone has every done for you, and slowly you’ll find yourself seeing him in more and more of a romantic light. Sure, he’s stolen you away and stalked you extensively, but when he holds you like he’s afraid you’ll disappear and calls you beautiful in a voice so raw that it cracks, how can you not fall for him? Maybe you’re sick in the head, depraved, any number of terrible things, but with each compliment he forces from your lips, you’ll find yourself caring less.
He just really, really loves you, doesn’t he?
OVERALL DANGER:
4/10
By and large, Sanemi is akin to a large, possessive guard dog. The mere thought of hurting you makes him sick to his stomach, and he’ll go to any possible length to ensure your health and safety.
(He’s had literal nightmares about leaving you bloody and bruised, and he’s actually woken up and immediately hurled, breathing hard and nearly in tears because it felt so real and it’s almost like your blood is actually on his hands.)
He’s paranoid, terrified that you’ll somehow be killed and stolen away from him, your presence the only thing that seems to calm him, growing to become the only thing that motivates him to wake up every morning.
He’s overprotective, letting his fear for your safety bleed into every aspect of his relationship with you – he’s following you around like a lovesick puppy, constantly vigilant for threats to your safety. He’s obsessively tracking your meals, fussing over making sure that you’re getting balanced, nutritious foods, constantly asking you if you’ve drunk water on any particular day.
And he’s possessive – refusing to allow you to interact with most men, skeptical of your friends, entirely untrusting of each and every person in your life. He won’t try to manipulate you into isolating yourself, but Sanemi really, really wants to, only holding back for the sake of your mental wellbeing. And really, that’s a large factor in Sanemi’s behavior towards you – he loves you, or at least in his own deranged, too-intense way, and he’s willing to kill himself physically and emotionally just to make sure that you never frown, that you’re never sad or angry or afraid.
His first priority is you, always, and it’s only after that that he considers getting you to love him back. It’s of course the goal – he wants you so badly that you have no fucking clue, because how could you? How could you possibly understand just how deeply his dependence on you has become, just how intertwined a mere scrap of your attention becomes for his self-confidence, his happiness, his sanity in his day-to-day life?
He’s well and truly whipped for you, his every waking thought revolving around you, but you’ll that your life will be relatively good with him. He’ll treat you like a queen, spoiling you and doing everything in his power to keep you happy, and can you really hate it as much as you claim to?
Can you really, honestly say that Sanemi is a monster when he keeps you well cared for and respects you despite the way you know he wants to ravage you and keep you all for himself?
Can you honestly say that you don’t want him just as badly, that you’ve become so accustomed to him that you’re well and truly his?
Sanemi sure hopes not, and as time passes, you’ll slowly give into the small, desperately and pathetically hopeful looks of his, reaching out to touch him when he’s too hesitant to initiate, even whispering those lovely, sacred three little words. And once you do, he’ll only work harder to adore you, only falling deeper and deeper into obsession with every passing day.
With every passing second, really.

His charm and wittiness win you over easily, even though you’re apprehensive at the start.
Warnings: Cursing, kissing, kinda bad proofreading, and a disgusting amount of fluff
A/N: The hockey player x figure skater trope nobody asked for except it’s written by someone who *actually* figure skates 🤭 This is so silly and way too cute omg but it’s for @lifeofpriya for @wyattjohnston's winter fic exchange!! I hope you and everyone else enjoys!! <3
Cold. So cold.
It’s the first feeling your body registers as the shrill sound of your alarm blares through the quietness of your small apartment on a dark, dreary December day in Toronto.
You quickly pick up your phone from the nightstand it was charging on, eyes shrivelling shut at the brightness before you turn off the alarm. Once it’s off, you take a moment to contemplate why you make yourself do this after so many years but never bring yourself to quit.
Figure skating. Your lifeline and also your death sentence—at least you’re convinced it will be, eventually.
It’s the only thing that makes your five-thirty in the morning wake-up worth it, even as you remove yourself from the warmth of your bed.
You’re convinced you can see your breath once you turn on the light in your bathroom, holding back a shiver as you tie your hair back to brush your teeth and wash your face. It’s better to just start getting ready immediately, a routine you picked up way back in your early skating days, lest you fall back asleep.
Growing into your teens, you found it harder and harder to put yourself through the gruelling early hours that competitive figure skating requires, and there were only so many laps of power pulls you could take in punishment for being late before you had to come up with a solution to keep to your schedule.
Dragging yourself out of bed the moment you become conscious is, unfortunately, the only solution that worked, and still is, unfortunately, what you do now even though your own competition days are over.
You don’t skate for you, really, not anymore; you skate for your students, all five of them that you coach at different times throughout the week. Anna, the sixteen year-old girl who you have at eight o’clock sharp this day, is your only source of motivation as you finish your makeup and hair for the lesson.
Normally you don’t bother with a super kept-up appearance for your coaching lessons, but this day in particular has you coaching at a brand new rink, and you figure that first impressions to whoever you may or may not meet will matter.
The rink you usually coach at - an older place that’s definitely seen finer days and on the outskirts of Toronto but close to you - is finally being put out of its misery, as you like to say.
(It’s just getting a well-deserved renovation.)
An hour later, you’re all bundled up and ready to face the frigid Toronto air that awaits you. You have on three top layers total: a normal long-sleeved shirt, a thick jacket, and then your winter coat on top. You then have leggings to skate in with sweats over top to brave the elements, and those along with your coat come off once you get to the rink.
As you step out into the hallway which immediately opens to the outdoors, you quickly lock up before shoving your gloved hands in your pockets and swiftly make your way to the train that’s supposed to get you to your new rink.
Actually getting on and boarding is the easiest part; it’s so early in the morning that few occupants means little waiting time, one of the only saving graces of waking up at such an ungodly hour.
Once you’re settled, you plug in your earbuds and wait out the forty-five minute ride to your new rink.
“Morning,” The employee attending the front desk greets you after you walk into the rink, a little less than an hour later. “You have a pass?”
Your attempt at a smile is feeble, it still too early for you to bother putting on a social facade. “I’m a coach, I have a lesson here in twenty minutes.” You hold up the pass you printed out days in advance after registering on their website, transferring all the required credentials from your old rink.
The woman, probably about ten years older than you and looking just as exhausted as you feel, scans the barcode on your pass and waves you on. “Women’s locker rooms are down the hall on the right, there’s a door to the training rink in there too.”
“Thank you,” You say before following her directions, briefly admiring all of the Maple Leafs memorabilia covering the walls and ceiling.
Growing up, you never got into hockey—figure skating was your whole life and completely revolved around it, so any hobbies you picked up were separate from the ice entirely.
You did it for your sanity, but also because like most skaters, you grew to be annoyed by hockey players’ obnoxious presence. Not only were they cocky, but they tore up the ice with their complicated drills that zamboni refreshings never quite covered.
Stepping into the women’s locker room, you stopped in awe at how updated and nice it was. Fresh paint, large toilet stalls and showers, even the floors didn’t have you cringing at the thought of walking on them without your guards on.
Now, there’s still very much a hockey theme present; you suppose you weren’t going to escape that here with it being their practice rink, and all. You weren’t exactly happy to learn that tidbit of information, but at least you have early lessons, so the crowds that likely always show up wouldn’t be here at seven-thirty in the morning.
It’s five minutes later that your student for this session, Anna, saunters in, skates already adorned in a cute workout set that as a teen you would have loved, but now in your twenties find it wouldn’t keep you warm enough.
She looks as if she could take on the world, bright-eyed and full of youthful energy you admire her for having so early in the day.
Geez. You sound like you’re fifty.
“Good morning, Anna,” You greet her, sending her a smile as you quickly go through some stretches to get your legs warmed up. “Ready to get choreographing? I have about half of your long done so far.”
A long program, or a free skate, is a four minute routine that all types of skaters have for competitions. It requires a balance of all the technical elements like jumps and spins but also artistry, or how well one performs to the music.
It’s your least favorite type of program because it takes the most amount of time to perfect and is also hell to perform; if you think four minutes doesn’t sound that bad, imagine having to fly across the ice at top speeds all while maintaining elegance, power, and accuracy in every movement you do—all on blades.
“I’m so excited,” Anna replies, clapping her hands together. “I’ve been listening to my music nonstop since, like, you first suggested it to me.”
“That was over a month ago before we even settled on it!” You laugh, finally joining her in putting your skates on.
While you don’t skate professionally anymore, you still have a pair of skates you use when you actually feel like skating for fun—the skates you can safely jump and spin on. The skates you wear for coaching, an extremely worn-down pair that looks off-white now with the leather peeling off on the sides, have most definitely seen better days.
But they’re extremely comfy and perfect for recreational skating, which is all you do while coaching and is why you keep them.
“Alright,” You finally say, standing up and rubbing your hands over your arms which are slightly cold in your jacket now that your coat has come off. “Let’s go. You’ve skated here before, right?”
“Mhm!” She answers, leading the way out of the locker room and into the rink, the fresh ice glistening in the early sunlight coming from the windows up high. “I haven’t skated in this rink though. There’s like four in here and they’re open on different days.”
“You’ll have to show me the ropes one day,” You muse, following your student’s lead as she steps onto the bench, removing her guards before stepping onto the ice.
You don’t really have any intention of coming here unless you have to coach, though.
“Okay, then!” You announce, smoothly stepping onto the ice and gliding towards Anna who is getting ready to warm up. “I want you to warm up your edges, as well as your single jumps, got it?”
Anna salutes, not mockingly but rather endearingly. “Yes ma’am!” As she immediately takes off, you do your own on-ice warm up, though much less intense than hers.
While you won’t be skating her program fully - as in, doing the jumps and spins it requires - you do have to show her the footwork, which requires your body to be properly warm for all the edge work and artistry.
The ice lost its magic for you long ago, when skating became more about winning than having fun. Nonetheless, you still find satisfaction in the deep ripping sound as your blades sink into the ice, a sign of strong edges and good technique drilled into you at a young age.
As you go through your own warm up, you swing your arms up and around your chest loosely, trying to get your whole body as pliant as possible. While you do so your eyes wander, peering through the windows curiously.
The rink still isn’t full yet; you see only a mom and two little girls, an older man with his wife, and a group of maybe four men who had just walked in.
“I’m ready!” Anna suddenly announces, gaining back your attention as she skids to a quick stop in front of you. “Want me to plug in the music?”
“Nah, there’s no need,” You reply. “I can just play it on my phone. It’ll get too chaotic with it playing over the speakers.”
She nods in return, and you gesture with an arm to follow you to the center of the ice. “Alright, I have you starting here in the middle, but it doesn’t need to be exact because I’m having you do toepick steps in a spiral pattern…”
Meanwhile, Matthew Knies is cold. He should be used to it by now, but he was born and raised in Arizona where temperatures rarely drop below fifty degrees Fahrenheit during the day in winter. In Toronto, however, where a good day is above ten degrees?
He’ll just say he’s gotten used to his teammates teasing him when he shows up to practice bundled up in five layers of coats. His Slovakian ancestors would be ashamed.
This day is no different; stepping into the familiar practice arena for his team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, alongside some of his closer friends on said-team: Joe, Auston, and their captain, John. Matthew holds his arms close to his body, ignoring the snickers from Joe.
“Hey, it’s only negative six today! That’s five degrees higher than yesterday!”
Matthew looks at his friend with wide eyes. It only takes him a moment to realize he’s referring to the temperature in Celcius, not Fahrenheit.
“I still don’t know what that means in Fahrenheit,”
Joe laughs again, bumping their shoulders together as John and Auston check in at the front desk for them. “It’s really not that different once you learn, you know,”
“Another day, Joe, another day,” Matthew laments, laughing himself as Joe rolls his eyes. He holds back his chirp when John whistles for the two to follow, already several steps ahead of them.
Conversation forgotten, the four make their way to the assigned practice rink they’ll be using for the day. They’re one of the first groups to arrive, as the place is practically deserted at seven-thirty in the morning.
Matthew pulls his phone out of his pocket for a moment to scroll through his notifications, blindly following his teammates. He’s steadily ignoring them until Joe suddenly groans, the goalie swearing under his breath.
“Man, there’s gonna be holes all over the ice now—”
“The fuck are you talking about?” He laughs, only looking up to follow his friend’s gaze to where only two girls take up the ice. He immediately spots the figure skating blades and fully plans on teasing Joe about being afraid of some toe picks until one of the girls suddenly turns, and he immediately has the breath knocked out of his lungs.
Her face is flushed, likely from a mixture of the cold and skating, and her hair has tiny flyaways that she keeps trying to brush away. She’s also clearly a coach based on her coat that has ‘COACH’ in big, bold letters across the back. She’s doing some complicated, confusing footwork all up on the toe pick until stepping out, all long legs and loose arms.
Matthew’s throat dries up. She looks like an angel.
“Now, the fuck are you talking about—”
“That’s my wife.”
“What?”
“Oh my god, Joe, that’s my wife.”
“Hey Cap, did you know that Matty was married because I sure as hell didn’t?”
“No, shit, I mean,” He can’t find the right words to speak, too enraptured with the sight of the mystery woman (his future wife) gliding across the ice. “Tell the boys I’ll be right there? Thanks!”
He’s vaguely aware of Joe shouting something as he briskly walks away, but he only has eyes for you, the mysterious angel on ice.
Anna is currently running through the first twenty seconds of her program that you’ve taught so far, you standing at the boards right by the sound booth as if you were actually playing her music. She’s on the last part of the sequence, a spiral - a move where a skater raises one leg high in the air, upper body as parallel to the ice as possible - and her posture is stiff, but she seems to know that and corrects it herself before you have to.
Your back is to the glass, leaning against it casually. The door to the rink also happens to be right next to you, but you don’t notice until movement from the corner of your eye catches your attention. You’re used to parents lurking, especially Anna’s, but when you allow yourself to look you quickly realize it’s definitely not a parent.
A man, tall and broad-shouldered, adorned in what looks like three or more coats, stares at you expectantly. There’s a half-smile on his face that immediately puts you on edge because no one should be that happy at eight o’clock in the morning.
Anna just so happens to finish and rushes to the bench for a water break, which is the only reason you allow your focus from her to divert to him. “Can I help you?” You frown, very aware you come across as standoffish.
He doesn’t seem deterred. “Sorry. I, uh, didn’t mean to interrupt,” His voice is warm and slightly sheepish, and his hands are shoved deep into his coat pockets like he’s still not entirely sure why he’s here.
“I’m in the middle of coaching right now,” You state slowly, as Anna begins to make her way back to you. You go to say something else, but she taps you on the shoulder before you get the chance to. “I’m going to the restroom real quick,” She whispers, looking all too happy to leave you alone with him before she skates away without giving you a chance to respond, again.
Anna tends to do that a lot. Knowing her, she’s already planning your wedding.
Resisting the urge to get off the ice yourself, you turn back to the mystery man whose attention is still undeniably on you. “Do you need something, or…?”
“Not really, just… watching,” He says with a shrug. He shifts his weight from one foot to the other, the tips of his shoes barely scraping against the edge of the ice. “You’re good, by the way. Both of you. That—uh, what’s it called? The thing with the leg up? Looks impossible.”
You blink. “A spiral.”
“Right. Spiral. Cool.” He nods like he’s just learned some very important information, and you feel the corner of your mouth twitch against your better judgment.
“Do you… play here?” You ask, gesturing vaguely to the rink. A silly question on your end because you’re pretty sure you already know the answer.
“Hockey,” He says quickly, almost like it’s an apology. “I’m Matthew. I play for the Leafs,” He points a thumb over his shoulder, where a few of who you assume to be his teammates are slowly trickling out of a locker room. Most look tired, some half-watching, half-laughing about something.
Of course he’s a hockey player. You almost forgot you were at an NHL team’s official practice arena.
“Right,” You say curtly, briefly looking for Anna who still has not returned. “Well, my student still hasn’t come back, but we’re almost done, anyways. You’ve got the ice in ten, I think.”
“I wasn’t rushing you or anything,” Matthew says quickly, taking a step closer. “Not that I really can. My coaches tell us when to get on and off. I was just… watching. Figure skating’s kind of cool. A lot like hockey, I mean, but I still don’t know anything about it.”
“I can tell,” You mutter under your breath.
He laughs, and it catches you off guard—low, easy, and a little self-deprecating. “Fair enough. I’ll let you get back to it. Just wanted to say hi, I guess. I haven’t seen you here before.”
It’s extending an olive branch on his part, leaving it up to you to introduce yourself or not. You debate skating away again, but he’s still smiling, eyes hopeful, and you don’t have it in your heart to do anything cruel.
“It’s my first lesson here,” You admit. “I’ll be coming here a lot more, now.” You finally give your name, offering your gloved hand for him to shake with your own sheepish smile. His hand dwarfs yours easily, and despite the fact he’s also wearing gloves you can still feel the heat from his skin seeping into yours.
Matthew looks as if he’s won the lottery. “I’ll see you, yeah?” You nod, unsure what to make of him as he makes his way back to his teammates. You gather your phone and coat from the bench, sparing one last glance his way again who is now standing with his teammates, but he’s not laughing along with them. He’s watching you.
You force yourself to ignore it, swiftly turning back around and stepping off the ice. But there’s something about the way his gaze lingers, like this wasn’t just a one-off conversation to him. Like maybe he’ll be back for more.
You don’t run into Matthew again for a week, and you definitely weren’t looking for a glimpse of him each time you had a lesson. You definitely didn’t take to Google in-between spare moments, searching him up on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ roster.
And you definitely, one-hundred percent did not come to the rink on a random Tuesday morning when you didn’t even have a lesson to skate on your own, just for the opportunity to run into him again.
Really, you don’t even know why. You’ve messed around with hockey players when you were younger, sure, because it was definitely convenient, but you never saw it as serious. You’re not sure why subconsciously, you think this one is different.
The cold air bites at your cheeks as you step onto the ice, smooth and untouched, a blank canvas. You take a deep breath, your warm exhale visible in the chill, and launch into your warm-up. While not nearly as intense as it used to be, you still like to keep up most of your skills—particularly, your spins.
Unlike a lot of skaters, you always hated jumps. You always loved spinning more, any and all types, and used those in your programs while jumps were always included at the bare minimum. You’ve just always hated chucking yourself into the air, never quite trusting your body to land on a singular toepick without fault. It’s one of the reasons you quit competitive skating after so many years.
The rink is nearly empty, though—just you and two others. You only plan on skating for an hour or two, even though freestyle sessions can last much longer.
You’re midway through alternating backwards power pulls - on one foot, skating left to right in half-swizzle shapes - when you notice him.
He’s sitting on top of the bench on the far side of the rink, wearing a backward cap and a hoodie that’s definitely not designed for the cold. His skates dangle off the edge of the bench as if he’s not quite committed to stepping onto the ice yet. His hair sticks out in every direction, the messy, effortless kind that probably takes zero effort but makes him look infuriatingly good.
It’s Matthew, you recognize without a doubt. Your heart jumps out of your chest, and you try to play it cool like he hasn’t probably already noticed he’s been spotted. You try to ignore him, moving onto your spins, but there’s a prickle of awareness every time you pass his side of the rink. He’s not just watching—he’s studying.
Randomly, you decide to mess with him. There’s a spin you love where you have to contort your body in an oddly flexible way, and you’ve noticed more than once how people will always stop in their tracks to watch. It forms the shape of a donut, hence the name ‘donut spin.’
You skate to the middle, the designated area for spins, decision quickly made. You have to hide the smile threatening to spread across your face at the thought of what look would be on his. Attracted, or impressed? Maybe both?
Taking a deep breath, you tighten your arms, engage your core, and take a strong step forward. Dipping slightly, you bend your knees just enough to gather momentum, shifting your weight to your left leg, having your right leg extend behind you in a straight line. Your arms sweep in, crossing over your chest, as you begin to rotate. Your vision blurs at the edges, moving too fast to make out even a shape. You feel the pull of centrifugal force, letting the spin tighten and quicken as with practiced motion, you reach down toward your left ankle, your fingers brushing the fabric of your leggings as your body folds. Your head dips low, and your extended leg arcs upward behind you, a perfect curve in the air. The donut shape then forms easily, your body compressed into a spinning circle. Your thighs burn but you welcome it, knowing it means you’ve locked in the position. Your blade scratches against the ice as you count your rotations, getting about five in before your body really starts to protest.
Quickly beginning to tire, you let the spin slow as you begin to rise. Uncurling like a ribbon unwinding, you let your right leg drop and open your arms, checking out of the spin. Your vision sharpens again, your surroundings coming back into view, and the first thing you do is shoot a quick glance towards where you last saw Matthew.
Just as you expected, his eyes are wide, mouth slightly agape. This time you let the smile come to your face, close-lipped but no less genuine, and watch as his cheeks flush a pretty shade of pink.
Knowing without a doubt that he’ll be the one coming over to you, you skate to a stop near the boards to grab your water bottle. You hear more so than see how he pushes himself up and strides over, his skates clinking against the ice.
“You’re insane,” Matthew says by way of greeting, his words almost breathless.
You grin, knowing exactly what he means. “Excuse me?”
“That spin you just did.” He gestures vaguely towards center ice. “You just completely folded in half. What is that?”
One of your brows lifts, feigning disinterest, though you think he knows you’re amused. “A donut spin. It’s my favorite,”
He leans against the boards, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “A donut spin, huh? So, out of all the moves—jumps, spins, whatever—that’s your go-to?”
You nod, trying to hold back a grin. “Yup. I was never much of a jumper.”
“Can’t say I’ve ever heard that before,” He says with a low chuckle, shaking his head. “I half-expected something dramatic, like a quad jump, or something.”
You can’t help but laugh. “Quad jumps are dramatic—and borderline impossible. I prefer spins that don’t require me to risk my life.”
“Fair enough,” Matthew replies, tilting his head as though he’s reevaluating you. “Obviously, I don’t jump, unless I’m checking somebody. Then I don’t mind coming off my feet a bit.”
You make a show out of looking him up and down, laughing internally as he seems to stand up straighter at your appraising gaze. “Makes sense. You look like you’d be violent out there.”
He takes a step closer, causing you to have to tilt your head back just slightly. He is, unfortunately, much taller than you. “Really?” He asks, voice low. “What gives it away?”
“Um,” You lose your words for a moment, tongue-tied at his sudden proximity. “Everything, honestly. I’ve seen you skate—like you’ve got a grudge against every guy who's not on your team.”
It’s Matthew’s turn to be caught off guard, though it quickly turns to cockiness that has you rolling your eyes. “You’ve seen me skate? How? When?”
“I may or may have not looked you up online.”
“Oh. So not in person?”
“Nope. I don’t watch hockey.”
“You should change that, actually watch one of our games,” He suggests, grinning. You’re starting to suspect he’s someone who always has a smile on his face. “I’ll score a goal for you.”
This time you don’t bother holding back your laugh. “That’s a whole lot of assurance for a sport that’s mostly luck.”
If possible, his grin widens at your doubt. “I’ll make you a deal,” He says, taking another step closer with a casual confidence that’s starting to feel dangerous. “Watch one of our games, and I’ll score a goal just for you. I’ll even call it a donut goal. Maybe the name will pick up.”
You shake your head, astounded by his personality that miraculously is starting to win you over. “A donut goal?”
“Yeah,” He replies, shrugging like it’s the most obvious thing ever. “Because of your spin. It’ll be my inspiration. What do you say?”
There’s a playful glint in his eyes, and you hate how much you’re already considering it. “That sounds ridiculous,” You giggle.
“Just one game! You watch, I score, and if you hate it, you’ll never have to watch hockey again.”
It’s annoyingly tempting, the way he pitches it. And maybe part of you is curious—curious enough to nod before you can talk yourself out of it. “I guess… Just don’t, like, hurt yourself doing something stupid.”
Matthew’s grin turns triumphant, like he’s just won a championship. “Deal. I’ll let you know which game to tune into.” He goes to skate away, but then quickly turns back around before you even get the chance to turn away yourself.
“Uh… Can I get your number?” He blurts. “For the game.”
“Of course,” You smirk, completely aware of his intentions, surprisingly not as frightened as you thought. “For the game.”
You stay on the ice for another hour, though you don’t work on any more spins, and especially not jumps. Instead, you just skate in laps, occasionally switching to a random edge exercise, but mostly gliding. Matthew left the moment he got your number, sending you a stupid donut emoji as his very first message to you.
What you didn’t see is Matthew immediately calling Joe the moment he steps back into the men’s locker room. “Dude, I got her number,”
A scoff can be heard from the other end. “Your skater wife?”
“Yup. I even got her to agree to watch one of our games. I kinda have to put one in the back of the net though?
There’s the sound of something shattering, followed by a curse and then his friend shouting. “You—her—fuck—what?”
He laughs at his friend’s disbelief. “And you thought I couldn’t do it!”
“It was a spiral, actually.” Matthew replies, proud even he remembered the name. He wants to remember every word that comes out of your mouth, made it a goal to do so. He had to wait a week to see you again, constantly searching every corner of the rink whenever he had a moment of alone time, though it’s not like his teammates didn’t know what he was doing.
“Your first conversation with her was asking about a swirly-thingy.” Joe retorts. “Not exactly winning over girls with that one, y’know?”
Joe took the liberty of informing Auston and John, of course, who therefore told the others. He’s still not embarrassed, though.
Not about meeting you.
It does turn out that Matthew is not very good at texting, however. Understandable, because you aren’t either, but his schedule makes it practically impossible. Not that he doesn’t try, but it’s gotten to a point where you’re eagerly awaiting his next message that takes hours to come in, which is strange because it’s not like you’ve even gone on a date with him.
He gets sick of the distance, literally and figuratively, quickly. He first asks to call you at night, when you’re curled up in your bed and he having just gotten back to his apartment from an away game in Ottawa. You reluctantly say yes, not because you don’t want to but because you don’t exactly have a lot to talk to him about when it’s one o’clock in the morning.
Your ringtone is shrill, startling you despite knowing it was coming. You answer immediately, biting your lip when you can hear his breathing audible through the phone.
“Um, Matthew?” You start when he doesn’t say anything. “Are you there?”
“Oh shit, yeah, sorry,” He apologizes, and you can picture the hand running through his hair as he talks. “Would you believe me if I said I was surprised you even picked up?”
You laugh. “No. I don’t answer my phone this late at night for just anyone, you know.”
“Technically it’s early in the morning. Get it? Because it’s—nevermind I’m shutting up now. You picked up just for me?”
“Well, it definitely wasn’t for your jokes,”
“My mom thinks my jokes are hilarious,”
“I think she’s required to say that.”
You and Matthew call pretty often after that, once the ice is broken—pun not intended. Surprisingly, even though you both go to the same rink multiple times a week, neither of you run into each other that often, so calling at night when you’re both free is the solution to that problem. Maybe it’s because your schedules are so different, but you try to fix the new Matthew-shaped hole in your life by following your first ever hockey team on Twitter.
Or X. Or whatever.
You definitely don’t tell him that - his ego is already big enough - but the amount of pictures posted of him keeps you entertained, and very much endears you to the personality you don’t always see, especially around his teammates.
While Matthew isn’t the biggest talker on his team by any means, even he’s surprised by the endless amount of energy he seems to now have. The excitement gets him through the day, his favorite part now being able to go home at night and talk to you.
And finally, after weeks of scheming and talking and definitely falling in love on his end, he has a game in Toronto against a team he’s relatively sure he could probably net one. He texts you the details, and gives you a link to a pirated website you can watch the game on for free.
Hopefully the league doesn’t find out about that one.
He’s so excited, though, and you’re finding it impossible to not match his energy. You’d be lying if you said you weren’t secretly kicking your feet at the thought of him deliberately attempting to score a goal just for you, too. The days before are filled with teasing texts from Matthew, all centered around some mysterious plan involving this so-called ‘donut goal’. Every time you ask him to explain, he evades the question.
“So can you tell me exactly how you’re planning on doing this?” You ask the night before.
“Nope,” He replies smugly. “You’ll just have to watch and find out.”
You snort, leaning back on your couch. “What if you don’t even score?”
“Wow,” He says, feigning offense. “Zero faith in me. That’s harsh, babe.”
“I’m just saying,” You tease, brushing over the ‘babe’ he let slip out. “It’s hockey. You’ve got, like, five guys constantly trying to stop you. Plus the goalie. Odds aren’t exactly in your favor.”
“You’re gonna feel so dumb when I pull it off,” He replies, totally grinning just by the sound of his voice. “Mark my words.”
Despite your best efforts to play it cool, you’re more excited for this game than you’ve ever been for a hockey game in your life, considering you’ve never even watched one before. Your small circle of friends that grew up skating with you don’t even know about your late-night plan; you want to keep Matthew to yourself, almost, keep this new budding relationship small and private, and you think he feels the same.
Before you know it, you’re tuning into the game on a sketchy looking website that Matthew refused to give any extra details on. It works, though, even if it lags every so often, and even shows the commentators on the side as they watch the game, too.
It starts before you know it—tiny players zipping around after an even tinier puck, and trying to locate Matthew on each of his shifts proves to be even more challenging. Every time you manage to spot his number, though, he’s moving with a grace you weren’t expecting, all power and precision as he skates circles around the other team. That isn’t to say he’s indestructible, however, because Matthew takes a shit ton of hits. Every hit leaves you wincing for him, but he gives plenty back in retribution.
He’s captivating to watch, the way he commands attention without even trying. And when he gets the puck, everything seems to shift.
He’s fast—so fast you lose sight of him multiple times as he weaves through defenders. He gets a chance, shoots it, but it goes wide before being collected by the other team, whom you don’t even know the name of. The game goes on like this for the rest of the first and second period, until the third is underway and you still haven’t moved from your spot on the couch, burrowed in a fuzzy blanket, hot chocolate forgotten.
The game is nearly over when it finally happens. A breakaway from the neutral zone, according to the commentators you can barely hear over the blood rushing through your ears, and Matthew again has the puck and breaks away from the defenders, skating with terrifying speed.
The crowd roars as he approaches the goal, and your heart jumps in your chest when you realize this is it. Your eyes are glued to the screen as he circles behind the net in one smooth motion, pulling off a wraparound goal so effortlessly that you don’t even process what’s happened until the puck is in the back of the net.
The volume coming from your laptop fizzles in and out, the arena likely so loud the speakers can barely handle it. You can hear bits and pieces of said-commentators celebrating in shouts, but all you can focus on is Matthew.
Because he’s spinning his hand in a circle—mimicking the shape of a stupid fucking donut—before pointing upwards.
“Oh my god,” You hiss, dropping your face into your hands. “Did he actually just do that?”
You’re mortified, but also—how could you not smile? He skates back to his team on the bench, grinning like he just pulled off the biggest inside joke of his life.
Even though the commentators can’t hear you, their response almost makes you feel they can. “Knies wraps it around, a beaut, and seems to make some circle motion with his hand. A new celly for the forward?”
You’re alone in your apartment, no roommates to worry about hearing you squeal, and the grin on your face impossible to hide. Stunned, mildly embarrassed even if no one else knows that his celebration was for you, and the most surprising thing about it all?
You definitely, without a doubt like Matthew Knies.
Before you can talk yourself out of it, you’re pulling up your text thread with him, your last messages with the player wishing him luck for the game and him saying thanks.
You’re insane, your new text starts with, echoing his words to you after what feels like ages ago. Congrats on the goal though! I’m impressed :) get home safe.
The game is over before you know it, your screen switching from zoomed-in interviews of the players to the commentators instead, going over the stats and noteworthy plays that quickly lose your interest. You keep it on as background noise, though, as you wash and put away your mug used for hot chocolate, wiping down what little mess was left on your counter.
You’re about to close your laptop for the night, too, when the words ‘Knies’ and ‘interview’ appear in the same sentence, immediately capturing your attention.
“It appears that Knies had himself ‘some inspiration’ for tonight’s goal… Check it out here,”
They show his face next, flushed red, drops of sweat trickling down his forehead. He’s in a skin-tight compression shirt that highlights his arms unfairly well, and the grin on his face is unmistakable.
A reporter is seen shoving a microphone into his face, asking about his goal celebration. He leans into it even more, if possible, staring straight into the camera. “I had some inspiration for my celly, yeah,”
“Inspiration from what?” The reporter presses.
“Donuts, actually,” He answers nonchalantly.
“Was that what the circular motion you made was for?”
Matthew chuckles sheepishly, his hand rubbing the back of his neck. He’s about to respond when someone who you assume works for the team taps on his shoulder, cutting the interview short.
“Donuts,” One of the commentators repeats incredulously once the camera is back on them. “Can’t say I’ve heard that one before.”
“Maybe wraparound goals should be called ‘donut goals’, whaddya think?”
You tune out their chatter, picking up your phone to open Twitter. The only accounts you follow are all Leafs’ related, so you don’t know why it comes as a shock to you when you see multiple posts joking about renaming wraparound goals to donut goals, all because Matthew made a little quip about it.
Unbeknownst to all of them that you were his inspiration to begin with—all to prove a point.
Hockey players, you scoff to yourself. Biggest egos you’ll ever find.
It’s not for another two hours later until he finally texts you back. Not that you were mad, or anything, totally understanding that game nights are always busy, but the message from him catches you off guard.
hi, it starts with. im done with all the press and stuff, team meeting’s done too. can i come see you???
Your eyes are heavy, barely able to form a coherent thought, but you don’t hesitate before responding.
Yeah, I’d like that
Another hour goes by, though, and you’re starting to think he forgot or got bribed into going somewhere to celebrate, and you’re about to call it a night and crawl into bed when there’s a sudden knock at your door, startling you.
You’re positive it’s who you think it is as you rush to your door, but you check your peephole anyway. Standing there, shoulders hunched and beanie drawn so far down over his head that it’s practically covering his eyes, is Matthew.
The door almost hits the wall with how fast you open it. You stare at him, now wide-awake, as he smiles at the sight of you, looking you up and down.
“You’re here,” Are the first words you blurt. “You came,”
Matthew’s smile turns soft, taking a small step towards you. “Hi, donut,” He greets. “Sorry I’m late, some fans found me on the way out of the arena…”
Your lips tilt upwards into a smile, amused at his new choice in nickname. “That’s okay,” You say. “You can come in, by the way. Don’t want you freezing.”
He lets out a laugh at that, his breath condensating in the chill. You step to the side and he wastes no time following you in, closing the door politely behind him. Walking back to your couch, you fold up the fuzzy blanket still sprawled across and take a seat, hands bundled in the sleeves of your hoodie. He follows you, but doesn’t take a seat and instead stands awkwardly in front of you, his hands fidgeting slightly as if he’s working up to something.
“Matthew?” You ask, tilting your head at him. “What’s up?”
He bites his lip, looking anywhere but at you until a decision seems to be made, determination settling over his face. He takes a deep breath, crouching down in front of you and placing one of his hands on your knee. Your heart races, breath hitching when his other hand slowly approaches your face, brushing away an errant piece of hair stuck to the side of your cheek.
“I like you. Like, a lot,” Matthew finally blurts. “I know we’ve only known each other for like a month, but when you know, you know. You know? That sounded better in my head, actually. Anyways, I think you’re really cool, and funny, and crazy talented, and not to mention beautiful, and—”
“Matthew—”
“—I think I can make you really happy, if you want, because I really wanna get to know you more—”
“Hey, hey, Matthew, Matty, shut up for just a second, yeah?” You have to grab his face at this point, hands palms cupping his cheeks as you teasingly shake his head. It does the trick, though, and Matthew shuts up with a choked swallow, eyes wide and nervous.
“I didn’t take you for a rambler when I first met you,” You start, one of your thumbs gently brushing his cheek. “You’ve always seemed so confident,”
His face is flushed a brilliant shade of red, and he tries to duck his head despite still being in your hold. However, he’s not complaining. He’d happily let you touch him anywhere you want.
“Only you can bring it out of me, baby,” Matthew’s attempt at flirting is commendable, especially since his voice is all soft, gentle, and vulnerable in the moment. “I think about you all the time. I look forward to calling you every night. And even when I knew you were watching my game, all I could think about is that I wished you were there in person to see it.”
He chuckles then, his free hand coming up to grasp one of yours still holding his face, entangling your fingers together and squeezing before bringing it down to rest in between you. Your foreheads are practically touching, your hand not being held in his moving to cup the back of his neck.
“I’m doing a whole lot of talking here, donut,” He says. “What are you thinking?”
You take a deep breath, shuffling ever so slightly closer. “I’m thinking that I really like you too,” You admit. “You’ve managed to worm your way into my life in only a month and yet I can’t imagine my life without you in it now,”
Matthew is full-on grinning now; you don’t think you’ve ever seen him this happy. “You’re not messing with me? You’re serious?”
“I’ve known for a while now, I think. Just—didn’t know how to say it.” You answer rather bashfully, now your turn for your face to flush red.
For a moment, the two of you are silent. He squeezes your hand every so often, thumb rubbing in gentle circles over the back of yours, and his eyes don’t leave you, not for a single second. You’re so close you can see the tiny wrinkles around his eyes, his slightly chapped lips, his tongue as it comes out to lick them. Your heart races and you can’t come up with any words to cut the tension, but like always, Matthew seems to know just the right thing to say.
“I don’t think I can wait anymore,” He suddenly says, eyes pleading. “Can I kiss you?”
You nod rapidly, sighing out a quick, “Yes,” feeling like you’ll explode if you don’t get the chance to taste him. Expecting something desperate or fast, you’re surprised when he brings his free hand up towards your face, sliding around the back of your neck and tilting your head to the side. He angles you just how he likes, you happy to go along, as he leans in slowly, slowly, slowly…
The first brush of his lips sends a full-body shiver down your spine, a small whimper leaving your lips that Matthew eagerly swallows with a happy sigh of his own. He presses further, his lips pillow-soft and gentle, no desire at all to rush the moment between you.
It’s not fast or frantic. It’s slow, deliberate, and full of everything that’s been building between you two for weeks. You don’t want it to end at all, not after finally having him, but the need to breathe eventually wins over. Matthew follows your lead and rests his forehead against yours, his soft breaths mingling with yours.
It’s intimate, the way your eyes open to look at him, finding the same look mirrored in his own.
“You have no idea how long I’ve been wanting to do that,” He murmurs, not at all ashamed to admit it. You bury your head in his shoulder, hiding the bashfulness on your face as flustered giggles escape from your lips.
Matthew’s arms immediately come to encircle you, holding you so close to his chest you can almost feel his heartbeat. He moves you to sit on the couch, you happily sitting on his lap. “Aw, don’t hide, donut,” He teases, the grin on his face so obvious by the way he’s speaking.
And because, of course, you’re you, without lifting your head up you quickly pinch his arm, laughing at the squeal you get out of him. “They’re calling wraparound goals donut goals, now, did you see?”
Matthew replies with obvious pride. “Duh. Of course I did. It’s a fantastic rename, in my humble opinion,”
“No wonder your ego is so high if your fans are naming goals after you,”
“You love it though, especially after I just gave you the best kiss of your life—”
“Don’t push it, Matthew.”
A/N: I've never written for Matthew before so I hope his personality isn't too unrealistic, I feel like it gives cheesy hallmark rom-com in the best way possible 🫣 please don't forget to reblog & comment :)

Disney's Wish
Look, Disney's Wish has been universally panned across the internet, and for good reason.
It’s just…kind of okay.
When we sit down to watch a Disney film—you know, from the company that dominated the animation industry from 1989 to (arguably) the mid 2010’s and defined the medium of animation for decades—we expect something magnificent. Now, I could sit here and tell you everything that I thought was wrong with Wish, but if you’re reading this review, then I imagine that you’ve already heard the most popular gripes from other users across the web. So, let me focus in:
The biggest problem with Wish—in fact, the only problem with Wish—is Magnifico.
Whoa, that’s crazy! There’re so many things about Wish that could’ve been better! The original concept was stronger! The music was bad--
I hear you, I do. But stay with me here, okay? Take my hand. I studied under artists from the Disney renaissance. I teach an adapted model of Disney’s story pipeline at a University level. I spent a ridiculous amount of time getting degrees in this, and I am about to dissect this character and the narrative to a stupid degree.
First, we need to understand that a good story doesn’t start and end with what we see on the screen. Characters aren’t just fictional people; when used well, characters are tools the author uses (or in this case, the director) to convey their message to the audience. Each character’s struggle should in some way engage with the story’s message, and consequently, the story’s theme. Similarly, when we look at our protagonist and our antagonist, we should see their characters and their journeys reflected in one-another.
So, what went wrong between Asha & Magnifico in terms of narrative structure?
Act I
In Wish, we’re introduced to our hero not long into the runtime—Asha. She’s ambitious, caring, and community-oriented; in fact, Asha is truly introduced to the audience through her love of Rosas (in “Welcome to Rosas”). She’s surrounded by a colorful cast of friends who act as servants in the palace, furthering her connection with the idea of community but also telling us that she’s not of status, and then she makes her way to meet Magnifico for her chance to become his next apprentice.
Quick aside: I'm not going to harp on Asha as a character in the context of Disney's overall canon. Almost every review I've seen covers her as a new addition to Disney's ever-growing repertoire of "Cute Quirky Heroines", and I think to be fair to Asha as an actor in the narrative, it serves her best to be weighed within the context of the story she's part of.
As Asha heads upstairs for her interview, we're introduced to the man of the hour: Magnifico. He lives in a tower high above the population of Rosas, immediately showing us how he differs from Asha; he’s disconnected from his community. He lives above them. He has status. While the broader context of the narrative wants us to believe that this also represents a sense of superiority, I would argue that isn’t what Magnifico’s introduction conveys; he's isolated.
Despite this distance, he does connect with Asha in “At All Costs”. For a moment, their goals and values align. In fact, they align so well that Magnifico sees Asha as someone who cares as much about Rosas as he does, and almost offers her the position.
… Until she asks him to grant Saba’s wish.
This is framed by the narrative as a misstep. The resonance between their ideals snaps immediately, and Magnifico says something along the line of “Wow. Most people wait at least a year before asking for something.”
This disappointment isn't played as coming from a place of power or superiority. He was excited by the idea of working with someone who had the same values as he did, who viewed Rosas in the same way he does, and then learns that Asha’s motivations at least partially stem from a place of personal gain.
Well, wait, is that really Asha's goal?
While it's not wholistically her goal, it's very explicitly stated & implied that getting Saba's wish granted is at least a part of it. The audience learns (through Asha's conversation with her friends before the interview) that every apprentice Magnifico has ever had gets not only their wish granted, but the wishes of their family, too! Asha doesn’t deny that this is a perk that she’s interested in, and I don't think this is a bad thing.
So, Is Asha’s commitment to Saba selfless, or selfish? I’m sure the director wanted it to seem selfless, wherein she believes her family member has waited long enough and deserves his wish granted, but we can’t ignore the broader context of Asha essentially trying to… skip the line.
Then, we get our first point of tension. Magnifico reveals his “true colors” in snapping at Asha, telling her that he “decides what people deserve”. This is supposed to be the great motivator, it’s meant to incite anger in the audience—after all, no one gets to decide what you deserve, right? But unfortunately for the integrity of the film and the audience's suspension of disbelief, at least part of Magnifico’s argument is a little too sound to ignore:
Some wishes are too vague and dangerous to grant. Now, there’s visual irony here; he says this after looking at a 100 old man playing the lute. The idea that something so innocuous could be dangerous is absurd, and the audience is meant to agree.
... But we’ve also seen plenty of other wishes that might be chaotic—flying on a rocket to space, anyone? The use of the word vague is important, too—this implies wording matters, and that a wish can be misinterpreted or evolve into something that is dangerous even if the original intent was innocuous. His reasoning for people forgetting their wish (protecting them from the sadness of being unable to attain their dreams) is much weaker, but still justifiable (in the way an antagonist’s flawed views can be justified). The film even introduces a facet of Magnifico’s backstory that implies he has personal experience with the grief of losing a dream (in the destruction of his home), but that thread is never touched on again.
What is the audience supposed to take from this encounter? If we’re looking at the director’s intent, I’d argue that we’ve been introduced to a well-meaning young girl and a king who’s locked away everyone’s greatest aspiration because he believes he deserves to have the power to decide who gets to be happy.
But what are we shown? Our heroine, backed by her friends, strives to be Magnifico’s apprentice because she loves the city but also would really like to see her family's wishes granted. When this request is denied and she loses the opportunity to be his apprentice, she deems Magnifico’s judgement unfair & thus begins her journey to free the dreams of Rosas’ people.
In fairness, Magnifico doesn’t exhibit sound judgement or kindness through this act of the film. He’s shown to be fickle, and once his composure cracks, he can be vindictive and sharp. He's not a good guy, but I'd argue he's not outright evil. He's just got the makings of a good villain, and those spikes of volatility do give us a foundation to work off of as he spirals, but as we’ll discuss in a bit, the foreshadowing established here isn’t used to the ends it implies.
While I was watching this film, I was sure Magnifico was going to be a redeemable villain. He can’t connect with people because he's sure they value what he provides more than they value him (as seen in “At All Costs” and the aftermath), and Asha’s asking for more was going to be framed as a mistake. His flaw was keeping his people too safe and never giving them the chance to sink or swim, and he's too far removed from his citizens to see that he is appreciated. Asha does identify this, and the culmination of her journey is giving people the right to choose their path, but the way Magnifico becomes the “true” villain and his motivations for doing so are strangely divorced from what we’re shown in Act I.
Act II:
His song, “This is the Thanks I Get!?” furthers the idea that Magnifico’s ire—and tipping point—is the fact that he thinks the people he’s built a kingdom for still want more. Over the course of this 3:14 song, we suddenly learn that Magnifico sends other people to help his community and doesn’t personally get involved (we never see this outside of this song), and that he’s incredibly vain/narcissistic (he's definitely a narcissist). I think feeling under-appreciated is actually a very strong motivation for Magnifico as a character-turning-villain, and it works very well. It’s justified based on what we’ve seen on screen so far: he feels under-appreciated (even though he’s decidedly not—the town adores him), he snaps and acts irrationally under stress (as seen with his outburst with Asha), and he’s frustrated that people seem to want more from him (again, as seen with his conversation with Asha in Act I).
But then… he opens the book.
Ah, the book. As an object on screen, we know that it's filled with ancient and evil magic, well-known to be cursed by every relevant character in the film, and kept well-secured under lock and key. But what does it stand for in the context of the narrative's structure? A quick path to power? We're never told that it has any redeeming qualities; Magnifico himself doesn't seem to know what he's looking for when he opens it. It feels... convenient.
I think it's also worth noting that he only turns to the book when he's alone; once again, the idea of connection and community rears it's ugly head! Earlier in the film, Amaya-- his wife-- is present and turns him away from taking that path. In her absence, he makes the wrong choice.
This decision could make sense; it contains powerful magic, and if it were framed in such a way that the people of Rosas were losing faith in Magnifico’s magic, as if what he can do might not be enough anymore after what they felt from Star, going for the book that we know contains spells that go above and beyond what he can already do would be logical. Along the lines of, “If they’re not happy with what I do for them, fine. I, ever the “martyr”, will do the unthinkable for you, because you want more.”
It would keeps with the idea that Magnifico believes he's still trying to help people, but his motivation has taken his self-imposed pity party and turned it into resentment and spite.
But, that’s not the case. Instead he talks about reversing that “light”, which has had no real negative or tangible consequences on Rosas. Everyone had a warm feeling for a few seconds. Again, it’s meant to paint him as a vain control freak, but… he hasn’t lost any power. The citizens of Rosas even assume the great showing of magic was Magnifico.
Act III
Then, we get to the consequences of opening the book (and perhaps my biggest qualm with this film). The book is established as being cursed. Magnifico knows it, Asha knows it, and Amaya—who is introduced as loyal-- knows it. The characters understand his behavior is a direct result of the book, and search for a way to save him. This is only the focus of the film for a few seconds, but if you think about it, the fact that his own wife cannot find a way to free him of the curse he’s been put under is unbelievably tragic. Worse still, upon discovering there is no way to reverse the curse, Magnifico—the king who built the city & “protected it” in his own flawed way for what seems to be centuries—is thrown out by his wife. You know, the wife who's stood loyal at his side for years?
It’s played for laughs, but there’s something unsettling about a character who’s clearly and explicitly under the influence of a malevolent entity being left… unsaved. If you follow the idea of Magnifico being disconnected from community being a driving force behind his arc, the end of the film sees him in a worse situation he was in at the start: truly, fully alone.
They bring in so many opportunities for Magnifico to be sympathetic and act as a foil for Asha; he’s jaded, she’s not. He’s overly cautious (even paranoid), she’s a risk-taker. He turns to power/magic at his lowest point, Asha turns to her friends at her lowest point. Because this dichotomy isn’t present, and Magnifico—who should be redeemable—isn’t, the film is so much weaker than it could’ve been. The lack of a strong core dynamic between the protagonist and antagonist echoes through every facet of the film from the music to the characterization to the pacing, and I believe if Magnifico had been more consistent, the film would’ve greatly improved across the board.
I mean, come on! Imagine if at the end of the film, Asha—who, if you remember, did resonate with Magnifico’s values at the start of the film—recognizes that he's twisted his original ideals and urges him to see the value in the people he’s helped, in their ingenuity, in their gratitude, & that what he was able to do before was enough. Going further, asking what his wish is or was—likely something he’s never been asked— and showing empathy! We’d come full circle to the start of the film where Asha asks him to grant her wish.
Pushing that further, if Magnifico’s wish is to see Rosas flourish or to be a good/beloved king, he'd have the the opportunity to see the value in failing and how pursuing the dream is its own complex and valuable journey, and how not even he is perfect.
The curse and the book (which, for the purposes of this adjustment, would need to be established as representing the idea of stepping on others to further your own goals/the fast way to success), then serve as the final antagonist, that same curse taking root in the people of Rosas who’ve had their dreams destroyed, and Asha works with the community to quell it. Asha’s learned her lesson, so has Magnifico, and the true source of evil in the film—the book—is handled independently. Magnifico steps back from his role as King, Amaya still ends up as Queen, and Asha takes her place as the new wish-granter.
This route could even give us the true “Disney villain” everyone’s craving; giving the book sentience and having it lure Magnifico in during “This is the Thanks I Get!?” leaves it as its own chaotic evil entity.
All in all, Magnifico's introduction paved a road to redemption that the rest of the film aggressively refused to deliver on, instead doubling down on weaker motivations that seem to appear out of thin air. Once the audience thinks, hey, that bad guy might have a point, the protagonist has to do a little more heavy lifting to convince us they're wrong.
Look at the big-bad-greats from Disney's library. There isn't a point in the Lion King where we pause and think, "Wait a second, maybe Scar should be the guy who rules the Pridelands." Ursula from the Little Mermaid, though motivated by her banishment from King Triton's Seas, never seems to be the right gal for the throne. Maybe Maleficent doesn't get invited to the princess's birthday party, but we don't watch her curse a baby and think, Yeah, go curse that baby, that's a reasonable response to getting left out.
What do they all have in common? Their motivation is simple, their goal is clear, and they don't care who they hurt in pursuit of what they want.
Magnifico simply doesn't fall into that category. He's motivated by the idea of losing power, which is never a clear or impactful threat. His goal at the start seems to be to protect Rosas, then it turns into protecting his own power, and then-- once he's corrupted-- he wants to capture Star. The problem is, there's no objective to put this power toward. Power for power's sake is useless. Scar craves power because he feels robbed of status. Ursula believes the throne is rightfully hers. Maleficent wanted to make a statement. Magnifico... well, I'm not really sure.

Serotonin~ Klaus Mikaelson x f!Reader
Masterlist
~~~~~~~~~
3.7k words: You are a witch getting invited to a party at the Mikaelson compound. There you dance with a certain hybrid who invites you into his study for later…
Warnings: smut, blowjob, kinda enemies to lovers, dirty talk, eastereggs for my austrian friends, Klaus being a horny bastard and a dom, a little kinky but not a lot…
A/N: AHHH I GOT MOTIVATION AGAIN!!! I used to write on Ao3 but immigrated to Tumblr…I started to write again and I am so happy. Might not be my best one shot but I think it’s alright.
~~~~~~~
Your hand was trembling in fear, or like your mother called it, doing funny things. But that was only natural. To say you weren't nervous would be a lie and a bad one as well. You had been a part of the whole Vampire Drama since the day you arrived in this world and the danger, hiding and lying had taken a toll on you. Not that you would have minded. You were a thrill seeker, and a drama queen on top of that. Someone like that appreciates the thrill and the unknown. Still you didn't know if you were able to make tonight. Not in terms of surviving, you were quite skilled at that, but more on a mental level.
The Mikaelson's were hosting a party and you were invited. You hadn't seen them in a long time, and you would have loved to keep it that way. You didn't like Klaus very much, nor Elijah, nor Kol. The only one you got along with was Rebekah, but it wasn't worth putting up with her brother's just for her company. As a witch you had far better things to do. Ignoring an official invitation by the Originals wasn't one. It would be considered impolite and you couldn't afford having them as your enemy. Not after you had seen what they were able to do to witches like you or even vampires, who were there own kind.
This is why you were now standing infront of your mirror taking in the sight of yourself in the dress you had gotten for your eighteenth birthday. This had been a few years ago but it still fitted like back then. It was sparkling red and where it should be touching the ground red roses were knitted into it, a protection spell by your mother. Two gloves were reaching up to your elbows hugging your skin tightly. You had put your hair up in two thin braids on each side, coming together in the middle, while you had curled the rest of the hair and let it fall down. Your red eye shadow was matching the dress, and with a colorless lipgloss and mascara your look was completed.
You sighed one last time, before you grabbed your purse and headed off to the compound.
You were always shocked by how skilled the Mikaelson's were in hosting balls and parties and other stuff, but you knew they never did anything without a reason, and you knew inviting you wasn't a nice gesture. Still you smiled at Elijah who was welcoming the guests. He smiled back as you offered him your hand, he took it and implied a kiss onto your glove.
"It's good to see you, welcome back," he said. Anyone else would have taken that as a compliment, but you knew better.
"Elijah," you say the smile still plastered on your lips not quite reaching your eye's. Elijah noticed that too and raised an eyebrow but didn't comment at it, turning to other guests.
You knew it would probably be the worst decision to get drunk in a place full of vampires who weren't really found of you, but your nerves were getting the better of you and that's how you found yourself with your third drink in your hand already feeling a little lightheaded.
"Have you become an alcoholic in the time you were gone, or are you trying to drown some lovesickness?," a voice behind you asked and you shooted the rest of your drink before turning around looking into a pair of blue-green eyes.
"Niklaus," you said letting the name roll of your lip, "I doubt the only reason to drink are alcoholism and lovesickness."
He smiled, ignoring your comment, "Oh my dear, when did we go back to the formalities? Just call me Klaus," he said and you sighed realizing how much he enjoyed the banter you too had and always have had.
"Do you need a drink in your hand to answer me or are you just going to stand there with your mouth open for the rest of the night?," he asked and you immediately closed your mouth and swallowed down a sarcastic remark, reminding yourself why it was a bad idea to insult an Original.
"Why am I here Klaus?," you finally managed to press out and he sighed offering you his arm.
"I'd love to show you." You shook your head.
"I won't follow you into a creepy basement or some, just tell me." He smiled a little and accepted your wish surprisingly. "Then dance with me. I'd like to explain it to you without unnecessary listeners."
You considered it for a second, glad he had given you the illusion of a choice before taking his hand and letting him guide you onto the dance floor.
The Emperor Waltz started playing and you had to chuckle, "How ironic,“ you commented, Klaus chuckled.
"I swear this wasn't on purpose." You looked at him as you two started to dance. He had his hand on your waist, but didn't touch it as if he tried to keep a respectful distance. You couldn't say the same for you, your hand was holding on for dear life on his shoulder, while he guided you across the parquet your fingers of the other hand interlinked.
"Our family needs extra protection," Klaus said while twirling you around. You raised an eyebrow, holding his gaze trying not to look down at your feet.
"The Originals. Why would they need extra protection, I thought you all are immortal and having your own witches," your voice was laced with sarcasm and Klaus chuckled his grip on your hand growing a little tighter. He was now also touching your hip.
"I was told you own a Grimoire with special protection spells," you swallowed the music growing intenser. Where had he heard that? And when was this damn dance finally over?
"It's ten minutes long," Klaus said dryly almost as if he had read your thoughts. You looked at him.
"Why would I give you the book leave alone speak the protection spell."
"Because you don't have that much of a choice," he said dryly, the music lowering a little and his mouth went next to your ear, "Or do you really want to test me, little witch?"
You shook your head, "I can give you the Grimoire, I don't want to call you or your family my enemies." Klaus chuckled, "Intelligent witch. Always on the right side, aren't you?"
The music swelled again and you protested as Klaus sped up your movements, "Oh come on what is up with this Austrian dances?," you asked annoyed.
"Aww, for a witch who has seen the monarchy of Austria-Hungary rise and fall you are awfully bad at dancing to their music," Klaus said amused and you shrugged.
"I wasn't in Europe during that time. I assume you were?" Klaus nodded slightly, "I was trying to find the Doppelgänger or what was left of her."
"Katherine wasn't in Bulgaria at that time. I doubt she stayed anywhere for long," you said yelping as he lifted you for a second.
"And if I knew that before I would have left her country and returned to England sooner." You looked away, trying to concentrate on his steps. You did not want to form a connection with him. He chuckled slightly.
"Eyes on me. That's necessary for a waltz."
"I think you are lying," you mumbled but looked back at him.
"You know that you look amazing in that dress, right?," he asked and you nodded confidently. "I like it as well. Thanks for noticing I guess."
You saved yourself of stepping on his feet and Klaus smiled, "I always notice. Why don't you come to my room in a few hours when this party is over, and we discuss the details of you handing me the Grimoire?" You bit your lip but nodded as the dance was slowly coming to an end. You knew you had to go through this sooner or later and you didn't really mind.
„Perfect,“ he said letting you go again, "Oh and sweetheart?“ You turned to him raising an eyebrow, "If you run I‘ll find you.“
~~~
A few hours and drinks later you finally stepped into Klaus‘s office. To your surprise he was alone without Elijah or any other sibling. He smiled at you, obviously relieved that you came.
"Glad you didn’t try to run,“ he said, his voice low as he stood up and approached you walking like a predator mocking it's prey.
You nodded, your heart racing, although you weren't quite sure why, yes you were scared of him, but the alcohol seemed to make it even worse. „Listen I‘ll give you the Grimoire but after that I never want to hear a word from any original ever again," you said quickly so you didn't have to think about how his curls looked especially good today. At your words Klaus raised an eyebrow, "Really? From none of us?“
"Feel offended?"
A smug smile crossed his face, "Well yea, I'll miss a witch who has a lot of power in my life."
You smiled joylessly, "Well you bet that I won't miss the original who tried to suppress me."
"Aw you are so innocent aren't you?," Klaus asked, his voice laced with sarcasm and a shiver ran down your spine. He chuckled, "I watched you the whole night you know, you are such a brave girl attending a party at the home of the Originals. Everyone kept their distance because they are scared you'll break like a glass doll the second they even try to address you. They all buy your good girl act hook, line and sinker, but not me."
Klaus smiled cruelly, "You are neither innocent nor a good person, are you, doll?"
You swallowed, not quite sure what to answer. Klaus's proximity was making you more nervous than it should, but Klaus was waiting for your response and you wanted to give it to him.
"I never said I was," you finally answered, and he chuckled darkly.
"No, because I know you aren't. I can ignore all the lives you took, and all the sacrifices you made. But do you really think you can hide how much your heart rate increases every time I come near you? I wanted you here to talk about the Grimoire, but now I have someone who seems to enjoy my company a lot," he eyed your form up and down taking in every inch of you, "Or am I wrong?"
You swallowed the alcohol clouding your judgement, your body aching and not wanting to lie anymore. You shook your head, "No, you are not," you whispered your voice hoarse and goosebump started to build on your body.
"Look at you," he smiled, "All I have to do is whisper a few pretty words and you melt right in front of me, isn't that cute?"
The worst part was that his words made everything you felt so much worse. It felt like bubbles were building inside of you, like the champagne had started to have his own personality. But it wasn't the alcohol or the drinks in you, it was a real shiver that went over your spine when Klaus talked to you like that. Ugh you hated vampires.
Klaus took a step closer, his chest now almost pressing against yours, his hand was on your hip in an instant and he turned you around. "Listen closely, doll. I do not like witches," his hand wandered to your neck and a jolt went through your body, "You might be hot, but believe me you are not an exception at all. And if you do even so much as to try and hurt my family...," Klaus squeezed your neck a little more.
"Great," you said, your voice a little shaky, but you tried to regain back your usual composure, "And now we should have sex." You did not know why you said this. Maybe because Klaus was so close you could feel his breath against your neck. Or maybe because his hand was applying the perfect amount of pressure around your throat. Or maybe because his threat was super fucking hot.
Klaus chuckled behind you, his lips gracing over the shell of your ear, pressing a soft kiss to it, before he continued tracing his lips over your neck, his hands wandering up the sides of your body.
"If you insist. I never was one to deny a pretty woman an opportunity to release all of her pent up pressure." His hand moved to the zipper on the back of your dress, and pulled it down, slowly and considerate, "Although I like to tease them from time to time," he chuckled as he felt your uneasiness mixed with anticipation. You didn't turn around as the dress fell to the floor, and his fingers opened your bra sliding it off your shoulders.
At this point your body was already trembling and shaking and the fact you were so excited and ready only amused Klaus more. He clicked softly with his tongue. "I haven't even touched you yet and you are already a trembling mess. I am excited about what else I'll be able to get from you."
He turned you around quickly looking you up and down. You decided to take the initiative, at least for the moment, and kissed him. First you had to stand on your tiptoes to reach the Hybrid's face but once he noticed your struggle his hands grabbed your ass and placed you onto his table. His hand grabbed your chin roughly as he broke the kiss, "I am gonna show you exactly what can happen if you decide to behave and work for me," he smirked slightly, "I'd hate to show you the other side."
"Aren't you a softie," you joked and with a growl Klaus had you pressed onto his table. You could feel paper and a few pens beneath you as he lightly slapped you across the face. Not to hurt, but to warn.
You bit your lip not even in the slightest intimidated by his presence anymore, not when the option to be attracted to it was there. You pulled his head down kissing his lips and grinding your hips against him. He pressed them down, preventing you from moving, as he slowly kissed down your neck, stopping to nip and suck on it while he plastered your collarbones with bruising kisses. It hurt, but the pleasure quickly overtook and you had to suppress a moan, remembering that downstairs was a party full of vampires.
Klaus chuckled as his tongue licked over the peak of your breast and swirled around it, "Don't be shy darling," he whispered his voice hoarse, "Let them hear." You moaned as he bit down on your nipple drawing blood from you, and your hands pulled on his hair as he did the same to the other side. He obviously wanted to be in control, but you were having none of that, you quickly pulled his face back up and rolled you two around so you were now straddling him. Having wanted this for so long you were not eager to wait. You quickly disposed of his shirt before unclasping his jeans.
Klaus watched you and chuckled, before he lifted you up without any effort, and sped you both towards the big chair in the corner. He quickly pressed you down to your knees and shook his head almost mockingly as you tried to stand up again. He clicked with his tongue disapprovingly, "Eager little girl, you are lucky I am in a giving mood today, otherwise I'd make you beg for what you want," he chuckled and a shiver ran through your body. He chuckled, "Seems like you'd be a fan of that, wouldn't you?"
The question was rhetoric and you didn't answer. He left out a soft laugh as he saw your dazzled face, his grip in your hair growing stronger pulling you towards his groin, "Do you wish for an instruction handbook, or do you know what to do?," he mocked you his voice growing darker, and his eyes flashed yellow his werewolf side coming out, as you pulled his suit pants down and he kicked them away.
Beneath his boxers you could see his cock getting hard and realized how big he was. You wetted your lips, trying to regain your composure as you steadied yourself on his thighs as you touched him a little through them until you decided to take matters into your own hands and pulled it down.
You slowly licked a path down his length pressing your tongue flat against him, licking up his precum eagerly. You looked up through your lashes meeting his demanding gaze, his grip in your hair got tighter and more demanding. You wanted to tease him a little more but his grip in your hair tightened and you only had time to relax your jaw before he started to fuck your mouth. Klaus growled and moved his hips in sync with your mouth, pushing himself deeper. His cock pushed deep into your throat and you gagged, but that only made him twitch. You looked up at him and noticed him locking eyes with you as he sped up his movements.
Tears escaped your eyes, at the rough and brutal pace he had set. He wanted to pull off, but you knew it only needed a little bit more effort, so you grabbed his balls with your hand, massaging them while you sucked on his cock. You felt him shudder and his cock twitch as he pulled out and released himself, his cum spilling over your body. You looked down at yourself and Klaus growled satisfied. Your face was stained with the mascara and his thumb stroked over your cheekbone, almost tender for a second. He smiled down at you, awaiting your next move.
"You are so pretty, all painted in my cum," he mumbled, patting his lap. You didn't even hesitate a second, taking off your remaining panties before you climbed into his lap. He still wore a shirt and after you relished a little in the fact that you were completely naked, while he was clothed, you pulled his shirt over his head tossing it aside, with a smirk. You bit your lip admiring his biceps, and trailing your fingers down his chest. Klaus groaned approvingly as you started to kiss his neck, determined to leave a Hickey.
He chuckled and pulled away slightly, "It will heal in a second," he reminded you and you rolled your eyes, "I do love to try to make it last, tho," you whispered into his ear and moved slowly against his leg.
He groaned slightly, the sound of your wet pussy sliding against this naked leg obscene, and the fact he was enjoying it so much only made you want him more.
"There is one thing you don't know about me," Klaus whispered back, "I am not really a patient man," he said before he grabbed your hips and pulled you up lowering you on his cock without hesitation, "Now ride me properly, before I show you what happens to teasing little whores."
You slapped him slightly, before you started to grind against him, "Don't call me whore," you hissed and he chuckled gripping your ass helping you to find a pace.
"Oh but why not, love?," he asked innocently, "Do you think every girl just gives themselves to someone like me?"
"I would say probably more than you could count," you said and sped your pace up a little, your thighs were burning, but you were determined to show no weakness, having him like this felt powerful. You wrapped your arms around his throat, "Or am I wrong?," you whispered and he grinned suggestively.
"No, you certainly aren't wrong with your assumption, but it still doesn't change a thing," he said and smacked your ass lightly to get you to grind even faster. You felt tired, but decided to not stop, planting his arms on his shoulders trying to move faster.
"Yes, that's right, fuck yourself on my cock," he groaned as you lifted yourself up and down quicker. One hand stayed up on your waist steading you, the other was wrapped around your throat in an instant cutting off your airwave. You groaned slightly, the adrenaline that the oxygen deprivation sent through you was delicious and made you want to stay in this position forever.
Klaus growled as your pussy tightened around him, "Please," you whispered your limbs burning, not able to keep up the pace. He pressed his hips upwards and took your waist lifting you up and down with no effort, as if you were the lightest thing in the world.
"Cum," he commanded and his demanding tone was everything you needed to be sent over the edge. You fell forward, your forehead hitting his shoulder as your high crashed over you. Klaus chuckled and held onto you stroking your back soothingly, as you came down from your high. He trusted upwards into you a little bit more before he came as well, spilling himself inside you.
"Aww, is my little witch tired?," he asked with a smile as he looked at you. He turned you around pulling out, his gaze roaming over you hungry. You were completely spend, his cum from earlier still sticky on you, he smiled kissing down your neck, his teeth grazing over your pulse point. You whimpered looking up from under him and he ran his fingers through your hair, suddenly pulling it back. His grip was rough and his eyes golden, as he sank his fangs into your neck.
You groaned and tried to relax as he drew blood from you, but the pleasure and pain were battling and you couldn't help but grab his head, tugging at his hair. You weren't even sure what you were trying to do, if you wanted him to bite harder or let go. Maybe a mixture of both. He chuckled letting go of you, and you looked him in the eyes as you traced the dark veins under his eyes.
He licked up the remaining blood and you couldn't help but shiver under his tongue. "Come on love," he growled into your ear, "Let's get you cleaned up and continue this little game."
soooo….my thoughts on Midoriya at the end of all things BNHA. I want to preface by saying I was never a Midoriya hater — if I dislike the protagonist of a story, I don’t keep reading. I came into things feeling fully neutral, and at the conclusion of the manga, I’m much less neutral. I think the vast majority of my dislike for him comes from his total capitulation to BNHA’s extremely callous worldview, but there’s a significant part of me that’s frustrated with myself for thinking that he was better than he was. therefore:
points the fandom takes for granted:
Midoriya is selfless
Midoriya is a good person
Midoriya wants to save others
As far as the fandom’s collective understanding of Midoriya, I think this is where we went wrong. I think it was an understandable mistake, given the definition of “hero” we were operating under (the Stain definition, if you will. I think it’s notable that Stain’s definition of a hero, which aligns more closely with the classical definition of hero, is treated as laughable by the rest of the characters. But I digress.) Under BNHA’s standards, being a hero means a variety of things — being famous, making money, fighting villains, etc. I’m not saying that Midoriya’s motivations as a five year old need to be completely pure. What I am saying is that what being a hero means to Midoriya is not what it means to us, and that’s where the trouble starts.
Initially Midoriya appears to be selfless, but what the narrative quickly reveals is that his selflessness is actually a form of reckless self-sacrifice. I don’t think it’s fair to evaluate him as a good or bad person at the beginning of the story — he’s a kid, and classifying people as “good” or “bad” is part of how BNHA got into this mess. But I think I can definitively answer the question of whether Midoriya wants to save others. And the answer is no.
But Grace, the imaginary hero fans in my head protest, Midoriya saves tons of people in the story! He saves Kota! He saves Eri! Midoriya is all about saving people. I disagree. Midoriya is all about being a hero, and saving people is something heroes do; ergo, he wants to save people. Why do I think this? Because if actually helping others, if improving people’s lives, was what mattered to Midoriya, he wouldn’t have fixated on All Might and he wouldn’t have gone to UA.
See, even though BNHA society prioritizes and elevates heroes to a ridiculous degree, they’re still able to grudgingly admit that there are problems that can’t be solved by punching people. Doctors are still necessary. Teachers are necessary. One can imagine that social workers and caregivers and nurses and EMTs are all very much necessary to keep society going. BNHA might be all about heroes, but there are still tons of ways for someone to help others that don’t involve putting on a cool outfit and flying around. At age 13/14, that’s likely evident to Midoriya, and after seven-plus years of official quirklessness with no belief that it’s possible to get a quirk + no real evidence that it’s possible to be a hero without one, he’s had enough time and distance to start looking for a way to live a life that allows him to help people.
But Midoriya doesn’t want to help people. He wants to be a hero.
Not only does he want to be a hero, he wants to be a traditional hero — not a rescue hero like Thirteen, whose actions have an immediate positive impact, or an underground hero like Eraserhead, whose work doesn’t result in newspaper headlines, but a hero like All Might, who’s world-famous, who’s rich, who’s an icon and an object of adulation. The people who need saving the most are never going to be reached by a hero like All Might, and Midoriya’s smart enough to know that. If saving people was his goal, emulating All Might would be antithetical to it. Which suggests saving people isn’t his goal at all.
This isn’t me saying Midoriya is a bad guy. In this way I think he’s a very typical kid, and ultimately, the goal of becoming a hero does imply living at least some portion of his life in service to others. What I am saying, I think, is that while we as the fandom could be forgiven for assuming that saving people was Midoriya’s dream, it was never his ultimate goal.
that’s all for now. more of this coming later, likely in the vein of dissecting his worldview.
Growing up with Bakugou Katsuki had taught you three things:
Bakugou Katsuki had a temper like a firework - explosive, loud, and colorful.
His bark was somehow worse than his bite.
No matter how grumpy he was, you couldn’t stop smiling around him.
“What’s wrong with your face?” Bakugou grimaced, as you jogged to catch up, an extra bounce in your step. However, he slowed down slightly, allowing you to fall into step with him.
“My dad’s coming home today.” Your grin widened. “I’m going to visit home later today to see him.”
Your father was the pro-hero Aeris, who was known for his air-like attibutes and unique speed. You had also inherited his abilities, and his day-to-day heroism was what first motivated you to enroll into UA alongside Bakugou. Growing up, he had encouraged you to become a hero that not only helps the world, but changes the world for the better.
“Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.” Whenever he came home from work, he always reminded you of his life motto with a warm smile lighting up his face. “And you my dear, have the most beautiful dream. But you must also be ready to have the strength to pay the price when it comes to fruition.”
From then on, you had resolved that you would do anything to become a hero. You father’s words had inspired you to become someone who would willingly sacrifice yourself in order to fulfill your dreams of saving the world; just like your father. As he rarely came home, you were especially elated on the days he did, today being one of those days.
Bakugou grunted in response, eyeing your chipper expression with thinly veiled annoyance.
“Well stop it. It makes you look stupider than normal.” He grumbled, looking away from your bright smile.
“Mhmm,” You hummed noncommittally, not really listening. The walk back from class had become your guys’ unspoken routine. Ever since the two of you had moved into the dorms, Bakugou always waited after class for you to pack your bag so that the two of you could walk back together. Of course, he’d rather die than admit to you that he was waiting, often making up excuses such as finishing up an assignment or perfectly timing the speed at which he placed his books back into his bag.
“I’ll go with you. To see your father." His tone indicated that it was a non-negotiable statement. You tilted your head, slightly confused. He had never accompanied you before.
“I can’t have an idiot like you wandering around at night.” He clarified, clearing his throat. “You’d be too easy of a target for Villains. It’s almost like you want to get attacked.”
You opened your mouth to point out that you were one of the top 5 students of Class 1-A and that you could handle yourself, thank you very much. However, the words died on your tongue when you caught sight of how his fingers twitched restlessly at his side, at how he was intentionally looking everywhere but at you. Many people wouldn’t pick up on it, but you knew him better than anyone. The signs were were clear - Bakugou Katsuki, of all people, was worried. For you. Your smile widened.
“If you wanted to spend more time with me Katsu, you could’ve just asked.” You teased, laughter bubbling in your voice.
“That’s not, I don’t- stop making things up crazy woman!” He spluttered in response, the tips of his ears turning pink.
Much to Bakugou’s dismay, you continued laughing, causing you to almost miss Izuku falling into step alongside you.
“Hey guys! Good training today, huh?” Izuku exclaimed, smiling at you. You grinned back, nodding excitedly in agreement. Your spirits were still high from your previous conversation with Bakugou. However, upon spotting the freckled boy, Bakugou’s face immediately morphed into a deep scowl. His eyebrows furrowed irritably, but he remained silent.
“Izu!” You grabbed onto his arm, just like you had growing up. “Training was amazing! Did you get a chance to see my practice match? I could hardly believe it - Shoto and I tied!” You chattered incessantly, easily falling into natural conversation with him. The three of you used to always hang out together and you found yourself suddenly missing the green-haired boy’s presence.
“It’s been a while since we’ve hung out!” You continued. “You should join us more often - it’ll be just like old times!"
A pink flush spread across Izuku’s cheeks, trailing down his neck.
“Of-of course, I’d love to!” Izuku stuttered, eyes glancing down at your arms that were still wrapped around his. A faint crackling popping sound, along with the smell of smoked caramel filled the air, causing the both of you to glance at Bakugou. He now had his hands curled into fists, jaw tightly clenched.
“He’s not invited.” Bakugou spat out, eyeing the two of you murderously. Growing up with Bakugou however, made you immune to his violent tendencies. You smiled sweetly in return, letting go of Izuku in favor of placatingly rubbing Bakugou’s arm.
“You’re always invited,” You said to Izuku before raising an eyebrow at Bakugou, daring him to argue. He hissed like a cat baring his teeth, but didn’t protest.
“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind!” Izuku nodded, eyes flickering between you and Bakugou hesitantly. “You guys must be pretty close now - almost inseperable huh?”
“We’re not.” Bakugou snarled at the same time you chirped “Yup!” The two of you looked at each other for a moment before you let out a laugh, shrugging nonchalantly.
“It’s funny because you guys are total… opposites.” Izuku spoke carefully, glancing at Bakugou as if he was a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any moment. The green-haired boy’s words were true - Bakugou oozed aggression and abrasiveness, while you were all cheerfulness and tact. While Bakugou burned intensely like the sun, you were constant like the moon. Just as bright, but in a different way. After the blonde boy had been kidnapped by Villains, he had refused to talk about the situation to anyone. Everyone had pestered him with countless opinions and questions - except for you. He didn’t need to speak in order for you to know how he felt or understand what he needed. You had spent your whole life learning him, and now, all you had to do was merely stay by his side as an unwavering source of support. The two of you had been attached by the hip ever since.
“His grumpiness adds to the appeal.” You giggled. “Right?” You turned to look up at Bakugou, ready for a classic snarky remark, but your eyes met molten embers instead. Taken by surprise, you tripped, stumbling over your own foot. Two hands immediately reached out to steady you: one belonging to Izuku and the other belonging to Bakugou. The blonde boy let go of you just as quickly as he had touched you, as if your skin had scorched him. However, Izuku’s hand remained, steadying you. You shot him a grateful look.
“Thanks.” You regained your balance with a sheepish smile.
Bakugou’s face darkened as his gaze shifted from yours to Izuku’s hand, which still lingered on your arm. A low growl left his lips as his eyes burned holes into Izuku, who instantly let go.
“So-Sorry! I’m glad you’re okay! I mean-are you okay?” He sputtered, eyes wide.
“She’ll be fine once you leave.” Bakugou spat venomously, a vein bulging out of his forehead. Izuku chuckled uncomfortably while your gaze darted nervously between the two boys, unsettled by the sudden escalation of emotions. The air suddenly felt a little too warm, too tense. In a second Bakugou was moving, stopping only when he stood between you and Izuku, effectively separating the two of you.
“What kind of idiot can’t even get back to the dorms without falling?” Bakugou sharply retorted, nostrils flaring. “Hurry up, I’m hungry.” He stalked away, leaving you to direct an apologetic glance at Izuku before following close behind.
“That was rude.” You glanced towards the blonde boy as you struggled to catch up to him.
“Not my fault Deku pissed me off.” He grunted in response.
“And it’s not his fault that you have a short fuse.” You rolled your eyes in annoyance.
If those words had come out of anyone else, you probably would be slammed against the wall and blasted into oblivion. But you were always the exception. He growled, the sound low and dangerous.
“Not right now, sunshine.” He barked your nickname out like it was a curse, but you knew better than to take him seriously. Your words had struck a little too close to home, but you couldn’t bring yourself to care. He angrily slammed the door to the dorms open, uncharacteristically propping it open for you.
“Move it. I don’t have all day.” He practically yelled in your ear, causing you to wince. He at least had the decency to look back at you half-apologetically, before lowering his voice to a more suitable volume. “Well? Why aren’t you walking idiot?”
“Thanks, I think?” You shrugged, hesitantly walking through the door. “But you really got to tone it down Katsu, I me-”
The words caught in your throat. You froze, causing Bakugou to ram right into you.
“What the hell sunshine? What kind of idiot stands in the middle of the doorway?” He barked, but you didn’t respond. Your eyes were glued to the television, trained on the newscaster Miyagi who imparted the breaking headlines for today.
“Breaking news - A Pro-Hero has turned out to be a Villain? You heard it here folks, Ex Pro-Hero Aeris was found injuring several innocent children just this afternoon. It appears he has been secretly working alongside the League of Villains as an undercover agent.”
The screen cut, and suddenly, footage of a man filled the TV screen. His grin looked borderline crazed, an unknown murderous glint flooding his eyes. Two heros held him down as he struggled against them, handcuffs digging into his wrists.
Your legs gave out, and you stumbled backwards. Somebody immediately caught you, muttering something into your ear, but you couldn’t tear your eyes from the screen. All you could see was your father’s deranged expression flooding the screen.
“No.” You whispered, eyes peeled on the TV, arms trembling. “No. This can’t be real.”
"How could you do this?” A civilian yelled at the ex Pro-hero, angry tears blurring her features. “Don’t you have a child too? A daughter?”
All eyes turned to you, the dorm falling impossibly silent. This couldn’t be happening. Your whole world was collapsing, right in front of your eyes. Your arm reached outwards in attempts to grab onto something, anything, that could ground you. A warm hand enveloped yours immediately. You latched onto it, squeezing tightly. Something deep inside of you knew that you should look tear your eyes from the screen, but you for some twisted reason, you couldn’t. You needed to know more. You needed to know why.
Your father stopped struggling, finally allowing the heros to usher him into a police car.
“So?” Your father shrugged. His posture suddenly looked eerily calm and nonchalant, but his eyes remained dark. Frenzied, yet disturbedly content. He looked stared right into the camera. At you. “Why would I care? I never considered her to be my daughter anyways.”
Those words were all it took to send you spiraling. The walls closed in on you, trapping you, until suddenly, it was impossible to breathe. Your whole life was a lie. The person you had always looked up to in life, the person responsible for your existence, had just revealed that he never truly cared if you existed. You thought back to your childhood. He had taught you how to ride a bike, how to cook chicken marsala, how to use your powers for good. He had been your sole role model, had shaped you into the person you were today, and now he was-
Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.
Your dad’s life motto rang in your mind unbidden, yet it no longer sounded like encouragement. It sounded like a threat.
Are you happy? You wanted to ask him. Was the price worth it? Was betaying me, betraying the world worth it? Even though the questions screamed inside your head, you knew you didn’t want to hear their answers. A part of you knew what his response would be and hated it.
“It’s a trick.” You whispered, still in denial. A tear tricked down your cheek; you barely felt it. Your voice grew louder, more insistent.
“They’re lying. They have to be lying!” The words rang in the room, sharp and empty. A gust of wind rushed surrounded you as your face twisted with fury. Your classmates stared back at you, speechless. You had always been the calm and collected one, the one to rein Bakugou in whenever he exploded. But the roles had suddenly reversed, and suddenly you were the one bubbling over, about to explode. They had never seen you like this before - all seething, abrasive, aggressive. Even you had never felt this way before.
“It’s really a shame,” Mineta was the first to speak up. “that your father is a criminal. I mean, you’d think even criminals love their daughters-”
Before anyone could even blink, you were across the room, slamming Mineta hard against the wall.
“Say it again.” You growled dangerously, hands wrapped around his throat. A couple classmates tried to intervene, only to be blown back by a harsh gust of wind.
“It’s a pity. You’re so pretty, but I guess even you have violent tendencies.” Mineta sneered, wheezing when you tightened your grip around his neck. “It makes sense though. Like father, like daughter. ”
His words crawled along your skin and you instantly dropped him. He spluttered, leering as you backed away. All your life, you had been proud to be called your father’s daughter. But now, you felt nothing but a wave of shame and disgust. You looked up at your classmates. They all stared back with stiff postures and raised defenses. As if they too, thought that you would become a Villain. Blinking back tears, you did the only thing you could do. You ran.
You ran until your lungs nearly gave out, until nausea overwhelmed you. Gripping the edges of a nearby trash can, you emptied out all of the contents of today’s lunch. Your body trembled as you fell to the floor, pulling your knees in. The sound of stomping echoed in the halls, loud and harsh. Bakugou. Your stomach churned; he was the last person you wanted to see.
“Go away.” You growled, torn between wanting to be left alone and being too drained to run away. He ignored you, like he usually did, but this time it made you furious. Why couldn’t he just listen to you, just take you seriously for once?
“I told you to go away Bakugou Katsuki!” The words were icy cold and you heard the stomping pause for a moment. All your life, even when you both got into disagreements, you had never once called him by his full name before. Yet for some reason, you couldn’t let him see you like this - embarassingly weak and pathetic.
“What are you, my mother?” He retorted. The footsteps continued again, until he was soon towering over you. “Don’t call me that - shit’s weird.”
“I mean it.” Your words were coated with venom. You refused to look at him. “Leave me alone.”
Bakugou ignored you again, choosing instead to take a seat next to you.
“When have I ever listened to you?” He scoffed. “Don’t expect me to start now.”
You didn’t reply, curling deeper into a ball instead. The two of you sat in silence for several moments. The longer you sat, the more it all sank in. Your whole life had been a sick and twisted lie - how could you even start to separate the fiction from reality? Your breathing started to grow more ragged as you spiraled further, your throat tightening. You watched as your vision grew more and more blurry, until a choked sob ripped free from your chest. Hiding your head in your knees, you finally let the tears pour down your cheeks, let your shoulders shake from the sobs.
You felt a hand grab yours, the same hand that had wrapped around yours earlier in the dorms. Bakugou silently pulled you towards him, wrapping his arm around your shoulders in a tentative hug. Immediately you burrowed yourself into his broad chest, finding comfort in the way he held you closer to him, as if his arms could protect you from reality.
“I don’t even know,” You murmured, breath hitching. “what to believe anymore. If he raised me to be like him, then maybe I’m-” A villain too. You swallowed the words back into your throat, but they still hung in the air, unspoken. Another sob wracked through your chest, causing Bakugou’s grip on you to tighten. You stayed like that for a while, seconds passing into minutes. As the blonde boy tentatively rubbed soothing circles into your back, you couldn’t help the incredulous laugh bubbling alongside your sobs - Bakugou being calm and soothing? Your life was definitely falling apart.
“Don’t be an idiot. You’re obviously not a villain.” He spoke with absolute certainty, as if he was merely stating a fact, like how the sky was blue or the grass green.
“You can’t know that.” You murmured, remembering the way you had nearly strangled Mineta, the way your classmates had all stared at you afterwards. “Mineta-”
“Is taken care of.” Bakugou’s chest rumbled as he cut you off, tone menacing. “He’ll no longer have the audacity to look at you, let alone even speak to you. Neither will the others. I’ve made damn sure of it myself.”
Warmth spread throughout your stomach, rising up into your chest and onto your cheeks. You hid your flushed face further into his shirt. You opened your mouth to protest-
“Don’t even start sunshine.” Bakugou interjected, his tone leaving no room for argument. “You were upset and Mineta had a shitty attitude. If anything, he deserved it.”
You let out a watery chuckle. Only Bakugou would justify nearly strangling someone. As if sensing your upcoming retort, he spoke again.
“You didn’t hurt anyone. And you never will because…” He paused, eyes trained at the wall above your head. The following words sounded like they were being ripped from him against his will. “you’re one of the good ones, alright? Why else would I spend so much time with you? It’d be embarassing, ya know?”
You understood what he was trying to say. Bakugou always needed the best of the best, in every aspect. Which meant that whatever he chose to do or whoever he chose to spend time with, all of it had to be good. The best, in every sense of the word. After all, it’d be embarassing to him if it wasn’t. He’d view it as an unforgiveable slight towards his perfectionistic tendencies.
“Thank you Katsu.” You breathed in deeply, his signature smell of ashy caramel and fresh pine filling your nose, relaxing your limbs. You weren’t quite sure how you had gotten here, how you had somehow managed to slip in between the cracks of his impossibly high standards. You certainly didn’t feel like the best and you weren’t even sure if you believed his words, but they somehow still brought you comfort. At least you knew that someone in your life was raw and real. It had always been that way with Bakugou - what you saw was what you got.
"It’s nothing.” He huffed, but you caught a hint of a smile on his lips. Moving his hands upwards, he started playing with your hair, his touch oddly gentle.
It wasn’t nothing, but you didn’t have the strength to argue. Instead, you silently accepted the bottle of water he was offering to you. After muttering a soft thanks, you allowed the liquid to coat your dry tongue while matching the sounds of his even breathing with your own. And as the two of you sat in comfortable silence, you felt something in the air shift. For the first time, you noticed the fluttering in your stomach; the racing of your heart. You wondered if Bakugou felt it too.
The blonde boy eyed the window, watching as the rain started to pour down, droplets splattering across the glass. The sound was soothing, melding perfectly with the melody of our matched breaths.
“I like the rain.” You said, tilting your face slightly toward the window.
He snorted. “Of course you do.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You like everything.” He rolled his eyes. “It’s annoying.”
“Not everything.” You protested, shifting your body.
“Well, you like me.” He joked, all bravado. You stilled. One moment passed, then two.
“I didn’t mean it like that.” Bakugou paused. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think he was flustered. A faint crackling pop echoed in the hallway. “I only meant who wouldn’t like m-”
“I do.” The confession blurts out of your mouth before you can even think. “Like you I mean.”
Maybe your defenses were lowered because of the constant crying. Or maybe it was because of the way he was gazing at you now - like you were something precious, something so beautiful that he couldn’t tear his eyes away from you, even for a second.
“Took you long enough to catch on.” He swallowed, nonchalance forced into his voice. Another pop echoed in the hall. You stifled a grin as he forcefully stuffed his sparking palms into his pockets to hide them. A moment passed before your eyes widened as you connected the dots.
“For how long?” You breathed, voice catching in your throat.
“Too long.” He said gruffly, keeping it vague. “A snail moves at a faster pace than you.”
A laugh made it’s way out of your throat. “You could’ve said something!”
“That’s lame,” He huffed. “and you know it. But since we’re already on this topic, Deku better stay the hell away from you now that-”
You kissed the edge of his lips, partly to shut him up and partly because you could. He instantly froze, a shade of red rising up his neck.
“If you’re gonna do that.” He whispered, the sound deep and husky. “Then do it right.”
He yanked you towards him, the move rugged and harsh, pulling your mouths together. Kissing him was like a smoldering fire - hot, burning, and intense. His arms pulled you closer, and you wanted more of this, more of him. He kissed you like a starving man tasting bread for the first time, and when you pulled away, he groaned reluctantly, chest gasping for air. You caught his gaze and held it, a brief moment of understanding passing between the two of you. And for the first time, you knew that despite everything, you were going to be okay.
A smile crept it’s way onto your face, the way it always tended to whenever Bakugou was present. In your head, you found yourself unconsciously amending the list of things you had learned about Bakugou over the years:
Bakugou Katsuki had a temper like a firework - explosive, loud, and colorful. But when the time called for it, he could also be gentle, quiet, and fiercely protective.
Although his bark was somehow worse than his bite, when it came to you, he had no problems following through with his bite. After all, he was an excellent kisser.
No matter how grumpy he was, you couldn’t stop smiling around him. You still weren’t quite sure why yet, but you did know one thing for certain.
Through thick and thin, through the lies and the villains, Bakugou Katuski would always be there for you. He might be abrasive and biting. He might be aggressive and impulsive. But he was also solid and real. He was true to his word and below all those layers, he was inconceivably, irrevocably good. And of course, most importantly - he was most definitely all yours.
Gavi nsfw alphabet
A to Z. NSFW alphabet.
—Pablo Gavi.
summary: request.
warnings: yes. +18. smut, headcanon.
words count: +1.2k.
A - after care (what is it like after sex?)
He cares too much about you, he's totally sweet. He will want to know if you felt good, if you reached your orgasm, if you want or need anything. He will hug you for a while while you chat or just don't say anything but it's too touchy.
B - body part (favorite part of your body and his)
In you, your whole body, he can't choose. He's so in love. He likes your legs, your arms, your belly, your breasts, your hips, he admires everything about you.
In itself, he is quite proud of his body and how it evolved with his training. He really likes his arms, shoulders and back especially since he know that they are your favorite part of him.
C - cum (anything about cumming)
You probably use protection when he is inside you. You're are still young, there is no rush and you will have plenty of time to feel yourselves and try other things.
If it involves blowjobs or if you masturbate him, it will probably end up wherever, your hands, your mouth, your tits, belly or thighs. Anywhere.
D - dirty secret (some dirty secret).
He's obsessed with your butt, so much so that he admires it every chance he gets. So for that reason he likes to fuck you from behind to have the perfect view of your butt. He would like it to be dirty and wild, have your ass at his mercy and do whatever he wants with you.
E - experience (experience in sex)
Basic. Enough to know what you need, he's not very experienced but he would definitely try anything if it's with you. He is open to anything, you have time to get to know each other, your pleasures, your tastes, etc.
F - favorite position (to fuck you)
How he loves your butt is probably doggy style. But he wouldn't mind you riding him, since he might as well take your ass and do whatever he wants with it.
G - goofy (how serious is he during sex?)
At first he is too playful, he likes to be slow and torturous especially because he knows that things will be better if you are both super excited and needy. Once he is focused on you, he becomes completely serious.
H-hair (how do he / you take care of his / your privacy from him?)
He doesn't have too much and he likes it that way, so he doesn't shave it at all. While with you, he has no problem, he knows that it is a lot of work to shave or take care of yourself, even so you prefer to keep it clean and shaved.
I - intimacy (what is it like during sex?)
It depends on the situation, if you are romantic, Gavi will make love to you countless times and will take all his time to show you his love. If you are having sex or are too horny, it is probably wild and rough.
J - jack off (masturbation, how much do he/you masturbate?)
He is young, it is clear that he is very hormonal and in case of any problem he will have to masturbate. Besides, it helps him de-stress a little and forget about you when you are away from him, although he would prefer that you be the one to do it for him.
K - kink (fetishes during sex)
Hitting your butt (too much), pulling your hair, leaving hickeys on your breasts, neck and belly, are some of the more recent fetishes but they can vary depending on your mood.
L - location (places to have sex)
If it were up to him, he would always choose his room or any part of the house but sometimes you are not at home and he will take you anywhere, public bathroom, car in a parking lot, at the house of some of his teammates, at the pool, where be if he needs you.
M - motivation (what excites him/you?)
He likes you to sit on his lap and caress his ear. He likes the way you innocently caress his skin while sitting on his thigh also when you're wearing his clothes or not wearing any clothes at all.
N - no (what wouldn't he do with you?)
Share yourself with someone, neither man nor woman, nor friend, nor stranger. You are his and only his, he couldn't see you with anyone else.
O - oral (how does he like to give/receive?)
He loves giving oral, it makes him feel like he has the power over you and makes you beg for him at your worst. He will take you to the limit and beyond and won't let you cum until you scream and beg for him.
P - pace (how do I like to do it?)
He is young and works his body, so he is not gentle with you at all but if you ask him to, he can be delicate and romantic, although he will end up getting out of control and you have no problem with that.
Q - quickie (do he like quick sex?)
No. He doesn't like to be in a hurry, like I said before he likes to take your time, play with you, torture you, push himself and finally take you. So he wouldn't like to have to be quick, although if you are in a pinch you can have his fingers or his thigh but no more than that.
R - risk (would him take risks? which ones?)
He is a man of many risks, he would like to fuck you in places that no one imagines with people behind walls, in the car somewhere parked. He loves the adrenaline, he enjoys feeling the pressure of being caught and even more so if he is with you.
S - stamina (how long does it last during sex?)
Normally just one round is enough as it lasts a long time, it usually takes all its time so when you finish you are satisfied. But occasionally, it can go up to three rounds.
T - toy (use toys)
He don't usually use toys with you, since you never had the chance. He knows that you have the occasional vibrator and dildo but he never felt the need to use them, he knows that his fingers, tongue and cock are enough for you.
U - unfair (how much does he like to provoke you?)
A lot. Too much. He is the king of provocation. He loves to play with you to the point of driving you crazy for him.
V - volume (how loud is it during sex?)
The normal. He is a little loud when he is close to orgasm, his moans are somewhat soft and his gasps are desperate, he usually stays calm.
W - wild card (small random story)
Your body relaxed peacefully into the sheets of your bed as you tried to fall asleep but you were a little anxious tonight and you didn't know why. You turned in your spot again, watching your boyfriend sleeping angelically next to you. You sighed as you felt tired of your anxiety and tried to settle back down, you brought your body closer to Gavi's, pressing your back to his chest, taking his hand to cross it around your waist and hold it.
You heard a grunt from Gavi as your butt slapped against his crotch and you hid a laugh as you noticed his bulge.
"What are you doing, baby?" He asked hoarsely as you continued to move around to find a comfortable spot.
“I can’t sleep” you whispered, sighing.
"And you have to rub against me?" he says into your ear, licking your lobe.
"It was unintentional, babe" you try to defend yourself but his hand doesn't let you continue as he moves across your belly and gropes your breasts, making you gasp.
A moan escaped your lips as an electric current awakened your pleasure, making you brush your body against his again. His gasps became consistent as you screamed into him more, feeling his bulge continue to grow.
Now his hands were moving again and helping you pull yourself onto your spot so that you were in front of him, his sleepy smile greeted you and you smiled back at him before his hands slid down your panties and pulled you up. He caress there. You moan when his fingers come into contact with your skin and he probes the wet area, making you swallow a gasp. Your hands also go to his boxers and your fingers dig into his underwear, taking hold of his cock as you begin to move your hand up and down.
X - x-ray (how big is it and how?)
It is a normal size although very veiny and thick, although when it is very hot it can swell more than normal.
Y - yearning (how long can desire last?)
He wants you every minute but he has a particular endurance when he wants to make you suffer. Probably because of his work, he lasts too long without touching you but then when he is with you, he won't leave you in peace for a second.
Z - zzz (how is his sleep after sex?)
He'll probably fall asleep pretty quickly since sex usually takes up all of his energy, plus your warmth usually makes him feel at home. So after checking that everything is okay with you and giving you a little love and chat, he will fall on you.
Something in the way she watches
TW: A VERY ANTI CLAIRE BEAR POST
There's the part of Claire that makes me go ugh... And there's the part that makes me go huh? Wtf?
Except for the niche six people who would fight to the death in her honor, it's hard to watch Claire without questioning her motives and the writers' motives, even. She's written in such a strange way (rewritten, actually) that it has been talked to death in the fandom. I watched some TikTok takes on Claire recently and almost everyone was like "wtf is a Claire?".
Is it just bad writing?
The fact that she seems a lot more normal in previous versions of the script was brought to my attention in my previous meta about her. I doubt very much that she would have blown me away, especially since I was literally born a sydcarmy, but maybe she wouldn't raise the hair on my neck?
She was purposefully written to be weird. Bad weird.
But it's also done so subtly that the other 6 Claire stans think we're absolutely batshit crazy and just irrational haters when we bring it up.
The beginning
Carmy runs into Claire while shopping for veal stock and fennel which he needed to continue cooking up whatever he and Syd were work shopping earlier. Their conversation quickly turns to her career and why she chose to become an ER doctor so she recounts her first encounter with someone needing medical attention at a young age. While other children responded with fear, which is very natural, she does not. And you would expect that her seeming courage was due to empathy. Wanting to be there for this distressed and scared child who probably just had their most traumatic experience yet. But the only thing that keeps her there is curiosity. Fascination with a bone breaking. She doesn't try to comfort this child -who was probably a friend, she just stares at her arm. Carmy asks if she wanted to fix it, make it better, because empathy! No, she wanted to understand it. As a concept on it's own, separate from the whole of someone experiencing suffering.
And yes, the absence of empathy doesn't inherently take away from her being great at her job as a doctor. The most important aspect of a job like that is understanding what the problem is so you can know how to fix it. A lot of times, practical detachment is necessary to do your job well- not just in medicine- but a total switch off from empathy is how monsters are made, no matter how well intentioned. I've seen a lot of crazies defend Chef Fields because he was gunning for excellence, saying it doesn't matter that he emotionally and psychologically destroyed the people who worked for him because he achieved what he wanted- to have the most excellent restaurant in the entire United States of America (as Syd put it). But at what cost?
It's the pursuit of excellence without empathy that is responsible for a lot of cruelty based growth in medicine (see the history of gynaecology, nutrition science, etc). It's what is responsible for things like slavery, imperialism, capitalism etc. Is it impossible to have real growth while being empathetic and holistic?
Crazy segues, stops and solutions
Starting off with the infamous call. This one even the diehard clairecarmys know that this was a little bit off, even though they make excuses for it. One thing I noticed is how she tends to stop or interrupt his natural flow or thought process. At their initial meeting you can sense a discomfort from him and the resistance to take it further (it's not clear why because he naturally is averse to good things happening to him). He tries to come up with the least personal contact option (Venmo) but Claire successfully steers the convo to getting his actual contact info. Then when he gives her the wrong number, she chases down the actual number and calls him anyway.
In that conversation you can see him get backed into a corner. She grew up with him and knows him so has probably observed how he is with confrontation. It's the same reason he was unable to say no to her face about getting his number and instead gave her a fake one (I've done this numerous times). When he is stuttering, trying to find the words to excuse himself from her request to see her, she hits him with the "don't make this weird" speech, that she just needed a favor and this gets him to agree.
Another instance of interrupting his flow of thought is at the frat party when Kyle asks what he was doing. She doesn't let him answer but interrupts him, stating her "purpose" for bringing him. Maybe what he was going to say wasn't going to be all that interesting or great even but maybe he should at least attempt it? Maybe it would have given him clarity about why he agreed to come in the first place even though he had a mountain of work to do.
We also see this repeating in "Bolognese" where he was trying to express his concerns for the relationship. She also interrupts him while he's trying to find the words to express his concerns and she seemingly uses the exactly perfect words "the other shoe" which he had expressed earlier in almost an eerie manner to me, because how does she use the exact words he said in the AA meeting? The exact same expression? He agrees but with a little noticeable hesitation. Because maybe that's not... exactly what he wanted to say? Who knows? She didn't let him say it.
Then she offers a very compelling solution to this conundrum. Nobody's keeping track of shoes. I saw a lot of reactors awwing and ooohing in response to this and I'm thinking, am I crazy or did she just dismiss his very real feelings? His very real fear? This was a very real opportunity to emotionally bond in a very real way. She's currently his romantic partner after all. She could have interrogated where those fears came from, assured him of her intentions at least on a surface level (without spooking him) and also find out his intentions. Instead her response is, nobody thinks about this shit except you, weirdo, now let's talk science, baby! And even on the subject of science (the fire suppression), she's quickly bored because his explanation is obviously too dumbed down to keep her interested (I do love the subversion of mansplaining happening here, though). She speeds up his explanation to get to the conclusion, then lies about it being so interesting when he notices.
The craziest of all, and one that was immediately noticed and talked about a lot in the fandom, was her insane segue to inviting him to the frat party.
"speaking of dead brothers, do you want to go to a party?"
It's impossible to miss that one no matter how enamored you are with Claire. Did Carmy notice? Most definitely. He noticed Cicero's segue from talking about Carmy's dad in Dogs and commented on it, with Cicero calling himself "the segue king", so it's obvious that he notices those things. He doesn't comment this time though, all he does is make a face. But that line was straight up revolting. Unsettling. Disturbing.
We've never heard Carmy bring Mike up in personal conversations like this before. The only time he really talked about Mickey with real vulnerability was in Braciole at the Al-Anon meeting. This was a chance to really get him to open up especially with him saying he loved thinking about him. Now, she obviously doesn't owe him any emotional labor but she did invite him into this. She says they never really talked but then makes sure they never really do, keeping things surface level (Mickey was cool) and bringing up a crazy party when the conversation starts getting deep.
I also want to bring up their conversation about running around like kids. A lot of people assume they were talking about a past memory but I don't think so. This running around and shoplifting is happening recently and it's how they've hung out the last few weeks. Nat's conversation with Syd about Carmy at least hanging out with Claire suggests that. He must have done that quite enough times for her to conclude that if he disappears he must be with Claire. Also, his not even being aware that she sat behind him in freshman year doesn't suggest that they were hanging out a lot then, in my opinion. And we do see them acting out in juvenile ways so it shouldn't be a surprise that they chose very juvenile dating options like roaming shops or malls, running around like kids/ shoplifting. We do see in Beef that probably likes going to the store with his bills lying around. It's also significant that he runs into Claire in a store.
My point is, and just out of curiosity, so what did they really do when they hung out previously that this was considered really talking? Did they just keep mute the whole time and walk around or maybe just talk about the products they were checking out/buying? Maybe Claire was too distracted trying to shoplift obviously so much gum that she couldn't care less if there even was a conversation. Carmy of course, the antisocial king, wouldn't mind silence at all and just enjoy being in company.
Anyway, moving on...
Empathic queen
Of course you know this heading is sarcastic. Through out her outing, Claire displays a subtle but surprising and disturbing lack of empathy. It shows in the many ways she puts her immediate needs over Carmy's feelings. Obviously, as I will continue to state, no one owes anyone any emotional labor. But there's something in the way she moves like she's there because of the trauma not in spite of it. It feels like she's there because she likes looking at broken things.
Her story about her first experience with a broken bone already sets the tone for her behavior. She stares at her friends broken arm as an isolated curiosity not as something that happened to someone. She diverts from the subject of Mickey into a party of all things like it was nothing.
Even her visit to her friend Kelly who got majorly broken up with seemed like just an avenue to get Carmy where she wanted him to be. Because she absolutely could have gone alone and saved the Carmy date for later to be there for her friend and comfort her in a vulnerable moment. Sure she hugs her and says all the right key words but immediately turns her focus away to Carmy, so that Kelly who is still in a vulnerable state does the one thing that's the worst idea- immediately tries to get with another guy. Claire is obviously fine with it and doesn't question it or dissuade her from it because she's waiting on the next move from Carmy.
We can see a contrast from when she gets her own heart "broken". Kelly stays the night with her, cuddling and comforting her even though she had a hook up prospect that night (Ted Fak). This is one reason why she immediately irked me so bad. I've had a best friend like her that I don't speak to anymore. I completely had to cut her of cold because she was such a raging narcissist. She was nice but left me always feeling drained and like a nothing. In spite of her charm and welcoming energy, you slowly realized you were nothing but a tool to her- something to be used.
There's a very strong indication that she is turned on, as it were, by adrenaline. She loves the rush. And her avenue to get that is through risky behavior and observing trauma. She consumes trauma for the sake of it. She enjoys the risk of bad driving as a chaser to resetting broken bones. Notice how in all her dealings, there's no account of the overall outcome, you'd just have to infer it. Did the friend with the broken arm get adequately better? Does she have a wonky arm now? Oh well...🤷 Is Kelly actually doing better from the breakup? Has she had a hundred other boyfriends trying to plug that hole? Who cares?
You must have really... grabbed it!
When she discovers Carmy's scar, a very deep scar that must have been very traumatic to experience, the scene looks very sweet from the outside but has very disturbing undertones. She traces it gently, seemingly lovingly and inquires about it.
Then she laughs!!!!!
This man just described how he got got a very painful injury and she understands what would cause an injury of that magnitude because she is LITERALLY A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL!!! Not only that, she let's us know she actually gets the mechanics of what happened here because "you must have really... grabbed it!". However, what fails to compute in her brain is the WHY.
There are 3 ways that come to mind as to how an injury like this could have happened:
1) Someone forced his hand on that hot pot and held it there to torture him or made him do it. We know he was psychologically tortured by Chef Fields but do we know if he also added physical torture as a way of punishment?
2) He was so out of his mind for some reason that he didn't realize he was holding on to a scorching pot. With the theory that he got his hand burned the day Mickey died, this seems very plausible.
3) He deliberately held on to a scorching pot in an act of self harm.
All of these opinions are very highly alarming but it doesn't ring any alarm bells with Claire. He must have really grabbed it! But why? How come? What happened?
Instead she goes straight to making him describe the pain. Or better still she describes it for him to agree (once again stifling his own self expression). And how does she know about this kind of pain? Did she experience this sometime too? Nope! It's another trauma porn story about a girl she almost killed. She tells him this story distract him also because she could clearly see he was uncomfortable. The way he politely snatched his hand and put it as far away from her as possible was very telling. For contrast the way he described the scar from Mickey's birthday with fondness shows you that this scar was a very sore memory.
It doesn't fail to floor me how she made this story of the girl about herself. It was all feel sorry for me, I almost killed a girl, pity me. Yeah, how about a pity make out session? Oh, Carmy!! 🤦🏾♀️🤢
She fixates very oddly on the patient's beauty which is kind of a crazy thing to focus on when someone is basically probably dying. And of course for all her fixation and her being directly responsible for her almost dying, there seems to be no follow up beyond the point that interested her- being numb from the pain. Did she have any more complications? Did she manage to get better physically, emotionally? Doesn't matter.
Trauma seems to be something she weirdly enjoys to spectate on. It fires her up. She enjoys looking at broken things. Which brings me to the topic of the fridge.
What even really happened here?
We know the general story is she overheard him raging because he thought he was talking to Tina. But why did he think he was talking to Tina? Because somehow Claire got to that fridge and was quiet enough to overhear without alerting him to her presence. Every other person called out to Carmy and checked in on how he was doing. She didn't. She most probably heard him rambling, of course she wouldn't be able to make out what he was saying unless she went real close to the walk in door. Quietly.
Now considering how she walked into that kitchen
you would expect a lot more ruckus, a lot more momentum. She looked like she was about to go break down the door to save her man, perform CPR, a small surgery, talk him through it etc etc etc (is this obvious that I hate Claire?😆). But she bursts into the kitchen, finds it empty, then skulls to the fridge without a sound to listen to Carmy? Now with her history of seeming to enjoy others' trauma, is it possible that when she found the kitchen empty with no one to have to perform concern to she decided to just... spectate... a little? That's what it looks like to me. She wanted to hear Carmy in freak out mode but it goes wrong and she hears things she didn't expect, especially if she thought he'd already listened to her perfectly timed love confession.
Even the whole act with Richie seemed fake to me. The whole shaken look she gave him felt added on, giving him a kiss and enough motivation to go fight for her without actually giving him any real information about what happened. Just gave him enough ammunition to provoke Carmy. Then she embellishes the story to others as if he was directly mean to her.
It's left for us to see how she plays out eventually but my money is on she might be a benign psychopath or sociopath or have some kind of personality disorder. Or at least she's hiding something or putting on an act. Even the way everyone harps on the point that she's nice seems a little suspicious. Like an oversell that is a set up for a coming twist. That scene where she takes of her makeup in Tomorrow made me wonder if it's symbolic as well.
We're gonna see.
the way he thinks about how he wants to know the truth here - i can FEEL so much of how he really, really wants to tell her, about the truth about himself, about why he's doing this. gaoshun is thinking about maomao's usefulness on their side and jinshi probably partially considered that as well (yes he's down bad but he's also, in many ways, a very logical, rational guy who analyzes things - maomao will also acknowledge this point about him multiple times later on). but aside from that, he just - wants her to know the real him. to know why he's doing this. wants her to understand ...... and his voice here just really gets to me. he so so so wants her to see the true side of him.
and, at this point maomao's very much "i don't want to know therefore i will NOT know" "i don't want to get into trouble by knowing anything that someone of my position shouldn't know". which is understandable - but also, it's interesting to note that, when she first knew him, she saw through his fakeness immediately, and when she saw his mask slipped she liked that side of him better.
as the series progressed she no longer was in the "i don't want to know anything" mindset. in LN9 we saw her reaction to Jinshi telling about about why he arranged his selection of personnel to go to the West that way.
even though her first thought was how she wished jinshi would treat her the same way he treated the quack, of not sharing anything unpleasant and just making the decisions without informing her, she immediately rejected the idea in her mind. she went on to think that he thought it would be best, and she herself also felt that this made her position easier, knowing the logic behind the decisions and her options available to her. she thinks of him as quite capable.
i just .... love how jinshi want to be real with her, want to be honest with her, and how maomao went from "i don't want to know anything i'm not noticing anything" to appreciating (sort of) him telling her his motives and reasonings.
"it was much easier to accept the answers he arrived at, even if they weren't perfect, knowing he thought things through". i am overwhelmed by so many feelings i love them.
maomao's reaction to the personnel selection for travelling west, in a way reminds me of what happened earlier in the same book (LN9) / last part of previous book. the branding. in both cases, maomao understood (whether through his explanation or her own grasp of the situation) why he did what he did, even if she's not pleased about it. she's pretty mad on both accounts, actually. she's angry he hurt himself in the branding incident (and also thinks he's selfish in doing so when the gyokuyou's and lihua's sons are both still so young), and she's angry at the personnel selection, of how jinshi used her to rope lakan in because he wants lakan's opinion on the west's situation and also because the western capital requested lakan, and now that she has to travel with lakan amongst the group, having to put up with lakan's presence.
but despite her anger - she still thought she could understand why he did what he did. still considered his decision logical and well-thought - and even considerate to her in a way. in the branding case, because maomao has expressed her reluctance at becoming the empress's enemy. in the travelling west case, she understood that he also did it for her safety, for lakan has many enemies that might try to do something to maomao, if left in the capital. in both cases, she recognized that he evaluated the situation from multiple angles, combining different goals together, different things he wanted to achieve and take care of, and put together a plan that satisfied all that. in both cases she acknowledged to herself that he acted based on a lot of considerations and logic, and it's not impulsive. and that he has thought about her in both cases. she's still mad, but she understood. jinmao my beloved .......
See the thing is, I know that a part of my dislike of the Diaz parents is personal. It's because I grew up as the oldest kid in a Catholic family with too much put on my shoulders at a young age. I know this about myself. I know that when Helena nitpicks Eddie's choices and makes him feel smaller she's not doing it on purpose, she's doing it because she actually believes she's right.
And here's the thing, it's so easy to hate a character because they remind you of someone in your life. It's easier to hate that character than your own parent. Because here's the thing, Eddie still loves his parents so much even though they've hurt him, even though they aren't actually helping him. It's easy for us as the audience to hate them because they aren't our parent.
But putting yourself in Eddie's shoes it becomes easy to see that he believes the things they tell him and he resent them and he really does think he's a failure as a father and a man, and he still loves them. He loves them and he wants them to be proud of him and he wants them to accept that he's a good man and a good father. He is going to keep wanting that.
9-1-1 isn't a show that usually has it's characters cut their shitty parents off. And 9-1-1 also isn't a show that has characters act without motivation. Eddie's parents still see him as an 18-year-old kid who got his girlfriend pregnant. In their heads (especially his mother's head from what I can tell) he's still that boy instead of the man we've all seen him grow into.
And Eddie's going back to El Paso. He's going back to his hometown. He's probably going to do the thing a lot of people do if they have to move back to their hometown – he's going to revert to who he was when he lived there out a sense of self preservation. Except that isn't who Eddie is anymore, it isn't who he's been for a long time.
What I hope for Eddie and his parents out of this arc is a realization that Eddie is no longer the kid who got his girlfriend pregnant. He's an adult man who is going to make mistakes, but he owns those mistakes and tries to be better. He's a damn good firefighter and medic. He's grown and I think both Eddie and his parents need to realize what that means.
Because I will likely never forgive Helena Diaz for what she said to Eddie in Eddie Begins, but that doesn't mean Eddie won't and that doesn't mean Eddie shouldn't. If he as a character decides he wants to keep trying with his parents and if his parents start to accept him for who he is and treat him like an adult, I think that's a pretty decent end to that saga.
Especially if Chris gets to see his dad revert to who he was in El Paso and realizes this isn't who his dad is, his dad is the guy who built him a skateboard so he wouldn't be left out. The guy who runs into burning buildings for a living. The guy who learned to cook. The guy who makes mistakes but learns from them.
At the end of the day I don't know if Eddie and Chris rebuild their relationship without Eddie figuring out how to rebuild his relationship with his parents too. This show loves giving parents the chance to redeem themselves, they're probably going to do that with the Diaz parents, but as long as it isn't just Eddie saying he was wrong and everyone agreeing and moving on, I think a story where they realize no one was right and everyone fucked up and they can move forward together is a pretty good one.
On the discussions of leadership and leona finding fulfillment in the future, i’ve always found the times he’s stood out most in twst to be when he is mentoring someone. Subtly, never giving people answers but guiding them towards them, using language and examples they understand. We see it with ruggie, jack, jamil, all of savannaclaw and so many other characters.
which gets me thinking: what if leona becomes a teacher? he’d get the acknowledgment for his skills and ability he needs, but also be able to help improve sunset savanna by educating and equalizing the playing field for the next generation.
Ruggie’s dream got me thinking about it and now i can’t get it out of my head as a possible route to where he can get the things he ultimately needs to thrive.
Relevant posts: [ Does Leona need to be king to be happy? / Would Leona be a better king that Falena? / Catching up with him in book 7 ] [My thoughts on the book 7 part 11 Leona update is here!]
I agree that Leona tends to shine when he’s in a leadership or mentorship role to younger students! This occurs multiple times over, both in main stories (notably book 2, 3, 6, and 7), vignettes (his Camping Gear, Epel’s Union Jacket, etc.), and various voice lines (typically from younger students remarking on their admiration for him). He's actually really good at explaining things to others in a simplistic enough way and with realistic examples that slot neatly into their worldviews. I don't know that I would call it "subtle" though, there have definitely been times where Leona just outright tells others what to do or what's wrong with their way of thinking (mainly with Jamil in book 6, or ordering around his fellow magift/spelldrive team members). I think when you say "subtle", it's more like Leona has a way of leading others to acting in his favor, as he can occasionally have his own ulterior motives in imparting wisdom. (For example, he helps out the first years with mining for magestones so he can nap without being disturbed.)
Mmmm… I do think the idea of Leona as a teacher is interesting, but I don’t know if that would feasibly work. I think we as the players can appreciate, say, the NRC staff, but in reality teaching is often a thankless job (though it’s a respected profession in Japan) where parents and/or the school board will blame you for students not performing. You also need to put in several (unpaid) hours of work outside of class grading, preparing lessons, going to meetings, etc. I don’t know that he would be satisfied with “grunt work” like that. I think he’d also have to go back to get his masters/teaching license, which means more studies 💀
I also think the scale of teaching is too small for Leona’s ideals. Yes, technically your lessons will have a continuous or long-term impact because your students might then graduate and go on to change the world thanks to your teachings. But, in my opinion, it better suits his grand ambitions to be the one establishing schools and then leaving others to run those institutions for him; he’d have a much larger impact (and more immediate results, which is what Leona is after) that way, similar to how it is portrayed in Ruggie’s dream. A single teacher, by comparison, can do little to change the system for the countless people who need it (for example, the starving children in the slums). Additionally, it’s easier for Leona to control his own projects as some higher authority, whereas it’s not do easy for him to control what students do once they leave his tutelage—and for Leona, bring in command is important (he had no vice dorm leader because of this).
I also have to wonder if teaching is really the right field for Leona to get into…? I think people often confuse “being good at something” with “liking something”. This is also true of many fandom depictions of Leona; fans tend to claim he’s just “being tsundere” when he acts grumpy around his juniors other nephew Cheka and that he secretly harbors great love for kids. And while I do love me a wholesome take, I just don’t see that 💦 His official profile states his pet peeve is “dealing with kids”; why would objective information from an official profile be a lie? His annoyance seems pretty consistent and genuine when he is assigned some kind of babysitting-adjacent task, and he acts like he would rather not if given the choice but has to anyway in order to avoid graver consequences for himself, a dorm leader. I don’t think he would want to intentionally sign up for a job that means he has to put up with kids on a daily basis—and especially rebellious teenagers that won’t necessarily do what he tells them to.
I guess the comparison you could make here is Crewel, who also seemed to be wild in his youth and also seems to dislike children and disobedience—yet somehow he changed careers from fashion designer to science professor. He had a lot in common with Leona, so I think it could be argued that Leona could still potentially go down the teacher path. If I recall correctly, Leona has also tutored Ruggie and helped him achieve okay grades in present day—so Leona has a track record with teaching. We don’t know for sure what could happen; a lot can change and the future’s unpredictable! But for now, I definitely still think Leona’s ambitions wouldn’t stop at just teaching classes; he’d want to do way more.
… Imagine the insanity of having a literal big-boobed PRINCE as your professor though 💀 I don’t know if I would be able to concentrate properly in that lecture…
