After you finally get Richard Grayson off your windowsill, you can sit down and eat

To clear your head, you try to remember what happened before you found yourself in your “brother’s” apartment. 

You and your friends wanted to go to a bar before college started…….a fight happened….How are your friends?! Did classes start already?! 

Opening your group chat with your friends, there are some messages about the bar fight, Red Hood, and how they’d visit you in the hospital

When making your message for the chat, you lie about being discharged from the hospital and ask if classes have already started

Your friends are so kind and update you on everything that has happened since you were in the hospital

The fall semester has begun but you should have an excuse because you were in the hospital

With some help, you were able to email all your professors about your absence and just hope they don’t drop you from the classes

Also hope they don’t ask for any documents from the hospital to confirm that you were there.

After a bit of rambling, you and your friends log off the group chat for the night. You never told them about what actually happened to you or what you found out about Nightwing, Red Hood, etc.

The information is difficult for you to process. Your whole family are famous vigilantes and no one came to save you when you were kidnapped. 

And Nightwing, he really was your first friend in Bludhaven and it always hurts to lose someone close

But he doesn’t deserve it. He doesn’t deserve your attention and time when he abandoned you just like the rest of the family.

You would have been dead if it wasn't for this weird thing that keeps your heart beating!

Maybe it would be a good idea to test this “power” of yours. You’ve died twice now and it seems that it takes a couple of days to heal and regain consciousness

Just for a small test, you make a small cut on your finger and watch it heal right before your eyes. You were hesitant to do these tests at first but this is also fascinating

Another cut is but a little bigger and it takes a little longer to heal. 

This continues a few times before you can have an idea of how long it takes for your body to heal itself. 

Once you’re done, you decide to go to sleep again and wait until it’s morning

Back at the manor, Tim has been hard at work. Making multiple plans that will end with you coming back home

Some are more intense than others but it can't be helped if you decide to be difficult 

Tim has also spent a lot of time researching your “powers”

Back when Dick saved you from that thief, Tim took the knife with your blood on it for research

Some interesting findings can be helpful if all else fails

It’s around noon when you wake up and your professors responded to your emails

They say that you’re allowed to keep your classes but there is a lot of classwork to catch up on

After eating some lunch, you sit down and look over all the work you’ve got to do. That is a lot….

You spend all day struggling and planning how you’ll get help

The next day, you decide to go to class. You go a little early because you knew you’d likely be lost

Luck seems to be on your side because you’re able to find your classroom! 

Walking inside, you talk to the professor and they tell you about a project for pairs

Thankfully, you’ve already been assigned a pair so you won’t be alone. You do feel bad about not being here to help though 

The professor points you in the direction of your partner and you introduce yourself. The moment your pair looks at you, your mood immediately takes a 180

Why is Tim Drake in your class? Doesn’t he go to a college in Gotham or something?

You pretend to be polite until the professor walks away and you glare at your partner while he just smiles at you

When you sit next to Tim, you try to sit as far away from him but he just moves closer

Before you can argue with him, the professor starts talking about the assignment for the day

You try to do the assignment alone but immediately get lost and you reluctantly accept Tim’s offers to help

Tim’s explanations were quite helpful and you both finished quite quickly. The room is filled with chatter so you take this moment to interrogate your “brother”

He gives vague answers to your questions but is sure to mention that he didn't want to leave his “sibling” by themself

Before you can respond, Tim cuts you off by saying he has something for you

You watch him carefully as he shows you a familiar item

Your phone

You instinctively reach for it but Tim stops you by grabbing your wrist

Glaring at Tim and his smiling face, he says he’ll give your phone back if you’d go back to the manor for at least one night

Tim repositions his hand on your wrist to be your hands intertwined 

You try to remove your hand but Tim persists. It isn't until you decline his offer does he put your hand down

You’ve lived a couple of weeks now without your phone so there is no need for it. Plus, you plan to buy a new one later

Tim doesn’t mention the family for the rest of the class

When class is over, you immediately go to the library (Almost got lost) to finish more work 

You settle at an empty table near a window and take out your laptop. Of course, it doesn't take long for you to struggle with the assignment and begin feeling annoyed

(Un)Luckly, Tim has found you and offered to help

With his help, you’re able to complete a few assignments before you have another class to go to

Tim invites you to the manor again but you still decline him

You only have two classes today so you hope to get home as soon as possible before running into Tim again

This repeats for a couple of more days

Everyday, you always have Tim in one of your classes

Tim attempts to bribe you to go to the manor with him, with your phone, playing games together, some other stuff you didn’t pay attention to

At least he never bribed you with his help on your classwork. Even after you catch up on old assignments, there are just so many concepts to understand

It’s annoying but Tim has successfully squeezed himself into your life by constantly being around

Something seems to have changed though because you notice Tim has started to leave you alone more

You don’t know why but would rather not question it. He’s a vigilante, right? He probably has some work to defeat a villain or something, you can literally care less about what Tim does

One day, you’re with your friends to participate in an event on campus. There are supposed to be games and free food so why not

Before the event began, there was a speech from the sponsor of the event

The sponsor is a lab group of some kind, promoting the study of life and encouraging new findings. You don’t know what it is but something about them sends a shiver down your spine

When the speech ends, you and your friends play a few games when a person from the sponsor stopped by

You all talk a bit and answer some minor questions before the person goes to a different group of people

At the end of the event, your friends offer to drop you off at home but you decline. You don’t live that far away and you also have pepper spray to keep yourself safe

While walking a person blocks your path. It’s that same sponsor person from the event

They go into more detail about the lab group they’re in, researching life and all

You do your best to remain calm, not showing your disturbance by their sudden presence

That is until they point out how there was a bar fight in the area and a victim went missing

A victim that looks exactly like you, covered in bruises and cuts, bleeding so much that the hospital wouldn’t be able to save them

Yet here you are, in perfect condition

This is when they finally reveal their intentions, wanting to figure out how you escape death

Offering a place in the lab group as a researcher and totally not a test subject

You pretend to consider their offer while carefully taking your pepper spray out of your pocket

It seems the person planned for this because they quickly take out and shoot at your hand holding the pepper spray

Terrified, you immediately make a run for it

You’re filled with so much adrenaline that you can't hear the person shout and the other gunshots that nearly miss you 

Running through multiple alleyways, something suddenly grabs you and pulls you into an almost pitch-black area

Things move quickly as an arm wrap around your waist, a whirling sound is suddenly hear above you, your feet leave the ground, and now you’re on a rooftop

You almost collapse once this new random person releases you from their hold

No longer in a dark alley, you can finally see who this new person is

Red Robin 

He gives you some time to catch your breath and calm down, putting his grappling gun back on his utility belt

Once your heart rate slows to a normal pace, you’re quick to show your annoyance at seeing the vigilante

Red Robin just seems to smile at you, not showing how your words affect him in any way

When you finally give Red Robin a chance to speak, he goes straight to the point

He admits to leaking some information to that lab group, just wanting you to see how you can live on your own

Even if Red Robin didn’t tell the lab group about your ability, they would have found out eventually 

That’s what happened to your mother after all

The vigilante then gives you two options

You can go with the research team and be tested on for the rest of your life or you can have a life back at the manor

Hell, there is a chance that your family of vigilantes can find and save your mother. Allowing you to reunite

As long as you returned home

With your two options, you find yourself back at Dick’s apartment

Dick bandaging up your hand, Jason carrying a box with stuff from your apartment, and Tim contacting Bruce

whether the internet becomes an intolerable surveillance state, ubiquitous subscription model, or unusably ad- or AI-ridden shithole, I think we need to remember

how to do things offline

either on your personal hard drive (just because it’s an app doesn’t mean the information is stored in your device) or on paper. I’m not saying the collapse of the internet is imminent, and I’m not suggesting we do everything completely without technology, or even stop using it until we have to. (to be clear, I also don’t think the internet will just blink out of existence, suddenly stop being a thing at all; rather I think it might continue to lose its usefulness to the point where it’s impossible to get anything done. anyway) but some people may have forgotten how we got by before the internet (I almost have!), and the younger generation might not have experienced it at all.

I figure most people probably use the internet mainly for communication with friends and family, entertainment and creation (eg. writing), and looking up how to do things, so here’s how to do those things offline:

First and most importantly, download everything important to you onto at least one hard drive and at least one flashdrive! files can get corrupted and hardware can get damaged or lost, but as long as you keep backup copies, you have much-closer-to-guaranteed access versus hoping a business doesn’t decide to paywall, purge, or otherwise revoke your access. I would recommend getting irreplaceable photos printed as well

download and/or print/write down:

anything important to you - photos/videos, journals, certificates, college transcripts

contact info - phone numbers and/or addresses of friends/family (know how to contact them if you can’t use your favourite messaging app), doctors (open hours would be good too), veterinarians if you have pets, and work

how-to’s - recipes (one, two), emergency preparedness (what do I do if… eg. I smell gas)

other things you might google: cleaning chemicals to NOT mix, what laundry tag symbols mean, people food dogs and cats can and can’t eat, plant toxicity to pets

and know offline ways to find things out - local radio station, newspaper, a nearby highway rest area might have a region map, public libraries usually have a bunch of resources

also, those of you who get periods should strongly consider not using period tracking apps! here’s how to track your period manually

free printable period tracker templates (no printer? public libraries usually charge a few cents per page, or you can recreate it by hand)

moving on to entertainment, you can still get most media for free! it’s completely legal to download your favourite movies to your own personal hard drive, you just can’t sell or distribute copies (not legal advice)

music: how to get music without streaming it | legal free downloads

go outside - excuses include napping (if safe), eating, reading, finding cool plants/animals/rocks, playing with the dog

Yes this was not on my personal bingo card; my most recent Big Dog event was that a friend of mine works for air traffic control and recently had to delay BoJo's holiday flight by four hours, and on being told that this particular plane had to be prioritised for a runway slot because it contained an Important Clown promptly pushed it to the bottom of the priority list. Lol. And then all this! What larks.

Another day dawns in the reign of evil Grand Vizier-turned-PM Rishi Sunak. He's a very boring flavour of evil, tbh. Say what you will about Johnson, but at least there was spectacle and showmanship to his clownshow. Something for the children to boo and hiss. An animate ham in a villain's wig, something to really enjoy as you sit back, relax, and savour a tall, cool glass of schadenfreude.

By contrast Rishi just gets sycophants - who are no less ridiculous, but far more grey and boring - who pretend he's a tech bro because "he understands AI" and they think that will make him a visionary and a man of the future and maybe some sort of Elon Musk figure, because that's obviously a smashing template to be copied in a leader of a country.

Anyway, this is what we thought the day would be: another dreary overcast washout, livened up by Downing Street's latest attempt at making Sunak seem like a good idea to stave off the hulking spectre of Labour's inevitable GE win next year. How trite. How tedious. How mediocre.

Fun fact!

When a PM's term ends, as their last act in office, they get to present an Honours List. This means they write a list of all the people they reckon have been Jolly Good Sorts who have done Good Clowning and Supported The Community, and nominate those people for honours. Honours here can be anything from an MBE/OBE etc, to a Damehood/Knighthood, all the way up to entering the Peerage i.e. becoming a Lord. Traditionally, people have been fairly reasonable with these lists. Apart from anything else, the outgoing PM can only write the list - the new Prime Minister has to sign off on it, and it's usually the case, of course, that PMs are deposed by the opposition party.

Why am I mentioning this? Well: Boris, you see, has now presented his list to Sunak to validate. You may be unsurprised to learn that it contains quite a lot of clowns.

Another fun fact!

If a sitting MP is given a Peerage, they cannot continue to be an MP. MPs are elected. Lords are not. So an MP offered a lordship right now would have to stand down if they accepted, triggering a by-election in their seat that... well. That anyone could win, couldn't they? Ordinarily. Except Labour's shadow is growing, isn't it? I don't suppose Sunak would be all that happy about losing, for example, any Tory MPs nominated for a peerage right now.

At 8.39am, Politics UK reveals an as-yet-unverified report that Nadine Dorries and Alok Sharma have been removed from Boris Johnson's honours list, and will go back to vetting.

Hello! It’s me! And I’m back on my crossover bs again

A few years ago I had an idea for a Kirby demon slayer crossover but at the time my ideas for Meta Knight weren’t fully fleshed out. You can read some more of my ideas in the read more!

So originally my idea was that Kirby was an extremely talented young urchin that Meta Knight picked up in a town or a forest somewhere. Meta is the last remaining member of the Star Estate, a group of talents swordsman in the Corps that was nearly completely wiped out within the last century. Meta Knight, finding Kirby, saw not only extreme power and raw potential, but also a way to revive the Star Estate through a young talent that may grow up to be even stronger than him.

This inevitably happens, but happens much sooner than Meta expects, when Kirby is only 10 years old. Kirby learns the Breathing Style of the stars that Meta teaches him, but also has a terrifying talent for mimicry, and is able to temporarily copy any Breathing Style that he witnesses. Having surpassed Meta Knight in power and rank, Kirby takes Meta Knight’s official seat among the Hashira. That said, Kirby doesn’t have much of a mind for the more tactical and official side of the Corps’s duties, so Meta tends to take over for him during meetings.

Reactions to Kirby’s presence are mixed. Many of the Hashira bear some amount ill will against Meta, believing that Meta took in a child and trained him just to revive the seat of the Stars. They dislike that a child is fighting their battles for them, but have to begrudgingly acknowledge Kirby’s sheer strength. This results in a lot of people being rather surprised at just how tenderly Meta Knight treats his little ward, buying him little gifts and souvenirs wherever they go and making sure that he is healthy and safe.

Similarly to Urokodaki, Meta wears a mask to conceal his face, since he has been told that his face is too kind or too soft for his profession. He has offered to make Kirby one as well, but a mask would not do much to hide Kirby’s height and age anyways. Meta also carries two swords but only uses one— the second one is one of Kirby’s spares, just in case Kirby accidentally forgets or loses his own. (This happened about three times before Meta Knight started carrying the spare around.)

In this au, Dedede is a prefectural governor who continued ruling over his land after the daimyo-ruled han were abolished for prefectures. He comes from a long line of aristocracy, and is aware of demons wandering around at night but doesn’t get involved much with the demon slaying side of things. Meta is an old friend of his, and keeps him updated on recent local happenings with the demons.

He knows he’s strong, he knows he’s capable, and he gets what he wants, even if he has to fight or kill for it. He's decisive, and can manipulate most any situation into his favor. No matter what, he always has at least some control over whatever situation he’s in.

- But that confidence was born out of need, guilt, and fear.

- A failure to protect the person who made everything worth while.

- Regardless of whatever what took you from him in the past, whether he could realistically prevent it or not, he refuses to let it happen again.

- You were his everything, able to calm him down no matter how angry he got. You gave him the ability to see the beauty in little things, moments of peace amidst the storm.

- Losing you, he may as well have lost all sense of himself too.

- Then, he finds you again. You don’t know him yet, but he knows you.

Thoughts on Chiron in synastry?

I actually just read the book 'Chiron in Love: The Astrology of Envy, Rage, Compassion and Wisdom' (2023) by Liz Greene, and I would really recommend it to anyone who wants to do a deep dive on Chiron in synastry! The book is based on a seminar she originally gave in 2005 and it goes over: 'the nature of Chiron', 'Chiron in synastry', 'Chiron in the family,' and 'Chiron in the composite chart'. I don't think I could possibly explain anything from this book better than Liz Greene herself, so the majority of this post will be made up of excerpts (some of the quotes are very long so bear with me). And unfortunately there's a word limit on tumblr so I'll have to split this into multiple posts. This post will be focusing on Chiron alone, and the next post will delve into Chiron in synastry.

In order to understand Chiron in synastry, it's important to first develop a clear understanding of Chiron itself. In her book, Liz Greene begins by giving some background to the myth of Chiron, "The story that astrologers tend to relate to Chiron is his wounding by Herakles' poisoned arrow. But the way it's usually presented today in [astrological] circles is significantly different from older versions of the story. According to the updated version, Chiron is wounded and then becomes a healer because he has experienced deep suffering and develops compassion. I'm not suggesting that this idea is 'untrue', as it's a powerful theme connected with the emergence of genuine empathy and the capacity to turn one's suffering into a creative tool to relate to and alleviate others' pain. Chiron is a potent image of the healer who has acquired wisdom through personal pain. This version of Chiron has learned how to heal others because he has been wounded, and he reflects the process by which life's damage can enhance consciousness and put us on a path connecting us with [deeper] realities. The fact that Chiron can't heal himself is a necessary part of the story. If we could fully heal our own wounds, we might [lose] our compassion for others who are suffering. It's only the ongoing recognition of our frailty and damage that allows the continuance of empathy. There is profound truth in this interpretation. The only problem is that the idea of healing gifts emerging as a product of wounding is not what the myth of Chiron as it has come down to us from antiquity actually tells us. There are [many] sources for myths, and they inevitably mutate over time according to changing cultural contexts...I'm not suggesting that only the earliest rendition of a mythic story is the 'right' one. Myths are living entities and, because they are symbolic, many meanings may be simultaneously 'right', and different readings of a story may be especially applicable at different epochs of history. But when we're seeking astrological insights, it's always worth looking at versions of the story different to the ones we're most attached to, because they can offer us a new perspective on the pattern." (Greene, pp. 28-31)

She goes on to describe the original myth of Chiron, "Whatever version of the story we consider, the most striking difference between the one given in ancient sources and the one told in contemporary astrological circles is that in earlier sources, Chiron doesn't become a healer because he's wounded. He's already a healer, and his wounding not only puts an end to his career but also results in the relinquishing of his immortality. There seems to be agreement about the fact that the wounding occurs accidentally through the agency of Herakles; the [superhero] of Greek myth who is given 12 Labours to perform as a penance for the inadvertent murder of his wife and children, and manages [to complete all of them]. Herakles had just finished the second of his 12 Labours; the fight with the Lernaen Hydra, a poisonous snakelike monster with nine self-regenerating heads. All the hero's spent arrows were covered in the Hydra's deadly blood. After he put the arrows back in their quiver, he set off to visit his friend Pholos, the wisest and most benign of the wild centaurs. Pholos had a sealed jar of wine hidden in his cave which he had vowed to never touch because he knew that wine could drive centaurs mad. Pholos [was] determined to be civilised and loyal to his vow. Despite Herakles' insistence, he refused to open the jar of wine. But Herakles, being somewhat pushy, finally bullied Pholos into opening the wine. The other centaurs [caught a whiff of it]. They went mad from the mere scent of it, seized the jar, and started drinking. They began to tear up trees and smash boulders and hurl rocks, shooting arrows at each other and also at Herakles. Chiron, their King, rushed out of his own cave to stop the madness, because these were his people and he was responsible for them. Herakles meanwhile was pulling arrows out of his quiver and shooting them in every direction, killing many of the centaurs. In the midst of [this chaos], an arrow passed through the arm of one of the centaurs and accidentally struck Chiron. The arrow lodged in Chiron's hip, knee, foot/hoof (depending on which myth you read), all three of which belong to the horse part of him. Because the arrow was coated in the Hydra's [poisonous] blood, the wound it inflicted couldn't be healed. Chiron rushed back into his cave howling in agony. No matter what remedy he tried, his skills couldn't heal the injury. Because he was immortal, he couldn't die the way the other centaurs did. His situation was impossible and tragic. He couldn't function because of his agony, so he lay in his cave screaming in pain. Then a divine intervention occurred. The Titan Prometheus, who had offended Zeus by stealing the god's fire to give to humans, had been punished by being chained to a rock in the Caucasus mountains, where Zeus's eagle visited every day to devour Prometheus' liver. But this torture didn't quite kill the Titan because every night the liver miraculously regenerated and heralded another day of agony. Zeus, displaying his most spiteful face, decreed that this misery had to go on until some divine being was willing to surrender the gift of immortality to Prometheus. There had been no volunteers. Herakles, who felt guilty because Chiron was his friend, said to his father Zeus, 'I know someone who might be willing to do it.' Thus Chiron relinquished his immortality to take the place of Prometheus in the underworld, freeing the Titan from suffering and at the same time freeing himself from his own pain. Before his wounding, Chiron was already a healer and teacher, good and wise, gifted and kind. But through no fault of his own, he is caught in the [crossfire]. He blunders into the middle of the conflict to stop it, but [is not successful]. He can do nothing to heal himself despite all his wisdom and all his arts, because the Hydra's poison is an eternal poison." (Greene, pp. 31-34)

In this myth Chiron is faced with an impossible situation, one that he isn't personally responsible for, "Chiron can't keep his immortality without eternal misery and wretchedness and the loss of his purpose in the world. He can't remain a god. He isn't to blame, and his blamelessness seems to be one of the major themes of the astrological Chiron." (Greene, p. 35) In our natal chart, Chiron points to an area of life where we feel unfairly and irrevocably wounded, and perpetually unable to soothe the pain of this wound. It's where we feel we are "a victim of life" as Liz Greene puts it, being arbitrarily subjected to pain and suffering by something much larger than ourselves, something completely outside of our control and beyond our capabilities as individuals.

She continues, saying, "It's only when Chiron is ready to relinquish his immortality that he is granted release from his suffering. This is a disturbing denoument, and it's understandable that is has been reinterpreted so that Chiron's wounding results in compassion and healing gifts. But I think it's important to explore the myth in its original form as well as acknowledging the value of the latter version, rather than trying to convince ourselves that there will always be a happy ending to this story...The myth tells us that Chiron's wound can never be cured. But perhaps we can try to transform our way of responding to it and turn it into something more [creative and life-affirming]. That effort might itself constitute healing." (Greene, pp. 35-41) She then discusses what it might mean to 'relinquish immortality', "Audience: I think the relinquishment of immortality means a kind of humility in life, and an acceptance of your own death. Liz: Yes, I agree. The sacrifice suggests an acceptance of life's imperfections, the limits of our power as individuals, and our inevitable mortality..." (Greene, p. 47) There may be no 'cure' to Chiron's wound, but through adjusting our perception and reaction to this wound, and through profound acceptance, we can slowly begin to heal.

I'll end this post with an analogy from the book that relates to viewing life circumstances through different lenses, or, rather, through the lens of different planets, I think it's helpful in demonstrating how Chiron actually feels in a chart. Greene says, "Think about your last trip to the dentist. If you view the experience through Saturn's lens, it's an uncomfortable but necessary part of keeping your body healthy. It's unpleasant but you put up with it stoically and leave the dental surgery quite pleased because you've discharged your duty to your oral hygiene for another year. And if you have to lose a tooth or be fitted with a denture, well, that's just the hard reality of life. Viewed through Venus' lens, the important issue is having a beautiful smile, and it's worth putting up with just about anything and paying any amount of money to achieve it. reading update: june 2023

as promised (to myself) I spent all of gay months reading books by and/or about the gays, no exceptions! (unless you count the heaps of old Batman comics I was reading, but come on. it's all pretty fruity.) the trend will be continuing into July as well because I overshot and still have book I need to finish, so in the immortal words of Janelle Monáe: happy pride forever!

anyway, what have I actually been reading?

Empress of Forever (Max Gladstone, 2019) - man, I've been meaning to read this FOREVER! and I'm glad I finally did. Gladstone's space opera follows ultrawealthy tech genius Vivian Liao, a sort of dykey Lex Luthor who's CERTAIN that she's the good guy. okay, yes, she's trying to get control of the nukes, but she's not going to use them. it's just that the world's a mess and she needs to be in charge. unfortunately our girl Vivian doesn't get far in her master plan before she's transported across the galaxy and finds herself on the run from the all-powerful Empress in the company of a cybernetic monk named Hong and the legendary space pirate Zanj, the Empress' greatest enemy. from there our heroes are off on a slow, messy quest across the galaxy as they make new friends, grow as people, and strive to bring the Empress down. it's a very long book and can feel slow in places, but all of the time devoted to fleshing out the characters ultimately pays off as their stories converge into a resonant narrative about the notion of identity and what it means to be yourself. if you like Becky Chambers' Wayfarer books of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, get on this shit.

also hey listen Max Gladstone is having a bit of a Moment rn; the book he coauthored with Amal El-Mohtar, This Is How You Lose the Time War, is getting a huge boost thanks to the Trigun (????) fandom??? over on Twitter, and you should definitely go check it out

Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men (Jane Ward, 2016) - Ward is a brilliant queer feminist writer; rigorous and insightful while keeping her work imminently readable. while the title may sound facetious, Ward actually takes entirely at face value that there are men having sex with each other an engaging in otherwise homoerotic activities - mutual jerkoffs, hazing rituals that involve anal penetration - that sincerely aren't stemming from a place of gay desire and asks us what the fuck we're supposed to make of that. what results is a fascinating look at masculinity and the intricate rituals that both subvert and maintain it. shockingly thought provoking for a book that contains so many transcribed craigslist posts of men looking for straight guys to have totally normal hetero dudesex with!

The Latinos of Asia: How Filipinos Break the Rules of Race (Anthony Christian Ocampo, 2016) - I was lucky enough to get to see Ocampo (who is gay) speaking at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity this year, and naturally I had to buy one of his books while I was there. I strongly suspect he's about to become one of my new favorite nonfiction writers, because the Latinos of Asia was a brilliant read that I really couldn't put down. Ocampo (who's also Filipino!) delves into the formation of Filipino-Americans' racial identity, and finds that many feel caught between the most conventionally accepted racial categories - feeling alienated from the idea of Asian identity, which is often perceived as pertaining to East Asians like Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, and instead relating much more firmly to Mexican-Americans and other Latinos. it's a FASCINATING study on race and one (of many!) loopholes that exists in this very large, messy, totally made up construct of race.

A Lady for a Duke (Alexis Hall, 2022) - for my pride month romance novel I wanted to read something that I might actually like. I've previously adored Hall's genre-fucking ultra-queer Sherlock Holmes pastiche, the Affair of the Mysterious Letter, and Lady for a Duke was really well-reviewed, so my hopes were high! and you know what? I fucking loved this. it was like cotton candy, perfectly sweet and made to be inhaled without a second thought. Our Heroine Viola was the heir to an estate who faked her death at Waterloo so that she could run away and be herself - that's right baby, this is a 19th century trans lady romance! she reconnects with her old BFF the Duke of Gracewood, who's been catatonically depressed since losing his best friend in the war, and reader, you will not believe what happens next. just kidding, you totally will: they want to kiss each other so bad! they're yearning so bad and it's great. it's a very silly book and Gracewood is the most unexpectedly forward-thinking 19th century duke EVER who is instantly down to accept Viola entirely as a woman and thinks that having biological children is overrated, and you know what? that rules. I'm not reading this book for historical accuracy I'm reading it to watch a man beg his girlfriend to fuck him tenderly in the ass. and she does!!! if I'm being honest everything after they finally hook up is kind of nonsense and the book probably is too long, but god it's a delightful time.

Chlorine (Jade Song, 2023) - back in the days of twitter I started following Jade Song as soon as they announced selling this book, the story of a competitive high school swimmer succumbing to obsession as she fantasizes about becoming a mermaid. finally getting to pick up the book from the library and actually read it felt crazy after existing in potentia for so long! while Song's novel is a little rough in some places in exactly the way I expect from a debut, it's still gripping and visceral. our protagonist lives in an intense and demanding world, striving to please an overly handsy coach, wanting to please the immigrant parents she can barely speak to, stumbling through sex with boys on her team while longing for her female best friend. through it all she fixates on mermaids, and the story is told in flashbacks building up to a drastic act of self-mutilation at a swim meet. it's definitely not the right book for the faint of heart or anyone looking for feel-good fluff, but it's harrowing in the best way.

Vagabonds! (Eloghosa Osunde, 2022) - gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! Osunde celebrates queer life - those called vagabonds, society's outliers - in Lagos, Nigeria, slipping between the real world of social stigma, oppressive religion, judgmental family, and dangerous politics, and the world of magic, gods, and the unreal, blending the two together in an effortlessly dizzying effect. the ultrawealthy hide behind layers of flawless masks to conceal their identities, a lonely woman dying of cancer summons up a daughter than only she can see, and a young man channels the devil to raise his murdered lover. while the stories start bleak, firmly establishing the danger of life on the margins, they gather speed with increasing warmth and love as the story progresses, eventually bringing all of our protagonists together in glorious, life-affirming celebration of vagabonds and all who love them. Nigeria, in Osunde's hands, reads much like family - imperfect, sometimes even awful, but also capable of harboring tremendous love, surprising tenderness, and still worth holding out hope for. I think measuring books in terms of relatability is a fool's game, but as an American queer watching more and more legislation and persecution roll out against my people each day, it was hard not to feel a cord being struck. Vagabonds! is a beautiful reminder that queer resilience is eternal, and reader, I did cry.

Quietly Hostile (Samantha Irby, 2023) - I was a ride or die bitch for Sam Irby even before she picked up and moved to my small Michigan city, effectively becoming my neighbor. (not really, but she is married to the mother of a friend of a friend, so.) despite this, I will freely admit that I was a little underwhelmed by her last release, 2020's Wow, No Thank You. it's possible that WNTY was damned by its March 2020 release, putting it in the awkward position of being a humorous essay collection creeping out into the world at a time when everyone was paranoid and nothing was funny; maybe on a reread I would receive it a bit more warmly. Quietly Hostile, on the other hand, is just stupid funny right out of the gate. Sam Irby is old (see: in her early 40s) and going downhill, writing candidly about peeing her pants everywhere, adopting a rancid little dog, getting sent to the hospital with a severe allergic reaction, and jacking off to plot-heavy porn of elderly lesbian nuns. it takes a little bit of work to get me to actually laugh out loud at a book but man, I was chortling. if you don't already know her work, this is a sign from god (me) to check Samantha Irby out now.

what am I reading now?

Black Water Sister (Zen Cho, 2021) - the was one of the oldest queer novels(TM) on my list and I really wanted to knock it out for pride month. the Malaysian setting and culture is a welcome addition to contemporary urban fantasy, but I'm not sure I'm crazy about the story overall. and yet, I'm over 200 pages deep and don't want to give up, so ? I guess I'm persisting.

Giovanni's Room (James Baldwin, 1956) - my local library lost their copy just in time for pride month, so I bought one on ebay for all of nine dollars. haven't started yet, but I'm really excited to finally pop that proverbial Baldwin cherry!

* C2 - "In order to grow, you must let go of the past" (Sarah Rogers) - Posted  A Time to Lose and a Time to Keep to A03. This pre-war Steve POV ficlet incorporates the  Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF253 Pushing Up Daisies] and came in at 182 words.

* D2 - Alpha Steve - Pulled together a  crossover with  Week 2 of Hot Bucky Summer - combining  “What should I call you?”  +  Master  + Alpha - and my BBB K5 - Voice  square  for   The Business of Pleasure.  Bucky seeks out a professional Alpha Dom and - despite appearances, will be getting exactly what he needs.  It’s coming in at 970 words and, while it will be tagged as a one shot for now, has the potential of being continued. It will post on Friday. 

* E3 - Steampunk -  Squished this square to combine it with  the Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF250 Rushing Train] for An Attractive Concept -  a vaguely steampunk mostly-platonic Stony ficlet where Tony tells Steve about his newest invention.  It came in at 380 words and will get posted to Ao3 before the event is over.

This is one of those nights where I feel a lot of emotions for no discernable reason.

I want to be proud of my works- I came through for another sweep and upgrade of The Great Project, updated all the circles with new stuff I've been trying, packed several more Realm-Ripper/Ascendant-Killer packs into the thing.

I also have a Anti-Wind as a general Deity ritual set up for someone who I want to actually, truly make my friend.

How do I get to be this way. So Young, So Big.

No small part of me wants to use the most terrible of my faces again, Or maybe the kindest, stupidiest I could, this time. I still want to see them. The Concerto, the Nebula, hold them in hands that weave stars and truly judge them.

The line between the Deity and the Strangeperson is an issue I am now staring at. I'm at the point where therapy feels irrelevant if I do not come in as All of Myself, but I hedge because I am “insane.” God of Magic? Avatar for Magic? These things are not stable. Am I not stable?

so i saw the better world au and I wonder..what the flash family be up too in that world. after losing so many people are they on the justice lords sides, or is something else going on with them. because I think if Jay loses just one person he will break.

Ooh good question…

For Jay I totally agree with you - the death of Bart would break him - so I see him being in some sort of incapacitated state… not dead but not really living anymore either. Maybe the pain pushed him to have some sort of breakdown which he never recovered from. Or maybe he continued going on missions despite not being in the right headspace and something went wrong - accident or attack - which left him comatose and hooked up on life support - something Jaime would refuse to allow being turned off - despite it maybe being the kinder option to let him go. With whatever state he's in, Jay would be in need of constant care which Jaime would ensure he got, Jay would be a little like hawkgirl in the original JLa episode - unresponsive and hidden away in some facility. So, while Jaime would be the one who takes charge of ensuring the man is kept alive - consumed by the need to “protect” all those who mattered most to Bart - Ed on the other hand would be the one who actually goes to visit Jay - maybe once a week, maybe even everyday, whatever it is he makes sure the man isn’t forgotten about and keeps him company for at least a bit. Ed talks to him, keeping him updated on what’s happening in the world so he doesn’t feel left out and also talks to him about the thoughts in his own head - the thoughts he no longer feels comfortable telling anyone else anymore - Jay is the only person he can truly express himself to now in this “better world”, he’s kinda the last connection to Bart he feels he has left.

With Barry I’m not totally set on what his actual situation would be… he may be dead, he may be imprisoned or he may be in hiding… Despite the circumstances that pushed Jaime and the others over the edge - Bart’s death - I still don’t think he would succumb to the darkness and join them - I don’t think any of the leaguers would. Therefore, when the league get overthrown by the new justice lords regime, Barry along with all the other leaguers would be marked as wanted criminals - which would force him to go on the run. If caught he may be given a little leniency and imprisoned instead of killed (or however it is they’re dealing with criminals in this version) since he is Bart’s grandfather… though, since this au essentially sees Jaime becoming the monster of Bart’s original timeline, part of me wonders if Jaime would just straight up kill him - again removing Barry from any future Bart’s life. Maybe Jaime did try giving him a chance to join their fight but Barry said something Jaime didn’t want to hear and he snaps - killing the man then and there… Though if that is what happened, then I imagine Jaime lying about it to everyone - saying Barry got away and remains on the run, or that he’s been successfully captured and locked away in the highest security prison - but no one is allowed to see him without Jaimes permission - which he obviously gives no one.

Iris would be like Lois in the original episode - in some kind of “protective” custody for her own “safety” - otherwise known as, under house arrest so she can’t cause any trouble. Like Barry, she would not be okay with the new regime - even if her husband wasn’t being hunted for refusing to change his ways - shes a reporter, which means she’s all about freedom of information, whether good or bad - something probably definitely not wanted in this new “better” world…

As for the twins, I did consider them being with her, but now I’m actually swaying towards the idea of them being taken and put in some sort of school for meta kids - just to make things extra angsty. Maybe this school/facility is a derivative of the MHYC - where young kids with active meta genes are trained and mentored in using their powers - whilst also guiding them in the new ways of “justice”. I see those who were linked with Taos being mentors/trainers here, like livewire, Wendy and looker, and maybe Ed is the director of the facility - though only really in name, as like I’ve said before, he’s a bit reclusive and isn’t seen much of. I also see Jaime having a particular interest in Donny - given that he’s Bart’s future dad - Jaime ensures he’s given special treatment and is very overprotective of him - he may even take it as far as tracking down/ keeping an eye out for Bart’s future mother (if she even exists yet) and ensuring nothing happens to her either. Jaime would be very paranoid and it would make him very controlling.

So in short, Iris has her kids taken from her, jays catatonic, her husband’s missing, Bart’s dead, the worlds gone topsy turvy and she’s locked away… basically things suck for the flashfam!

* Her glasses are prescription and emotes either with her or shows her hidden emotions- Her arms do the same because they are connected- The eyes in her glasses are the result of the Big Change

* The eyes in her glasses appear on any set and immediately converts into her prescription

* Her eyes are not contact compatible because of the AI

* Talks to her arms constantly

* Because of the arms, her blood has turned to gas and her tears as well- It actually hurts even worse to get hurt/to cry because it adds an extra burn

* Sometimes her arms can take over and she loses control- She and her arms are usually in sync with each other but in high stress situations, (or “System Malfunctions” as she likes to say) it becomes easier for her to fall victim to herself- This can also happen if she hits her back hard enough

* In System Malfunctions, her gas-blood becomes unstable. As a result, it starts to leak from the metal “belt,” and the gas on her arms start to drip

* Her arms were her first thing she invented and she continued to update them throughout her life

* She wanted to fuse with her robot arms in order to prove that she was capable- She had an idea for the “cheap safe renewable energy,” but she knew that she couldn’t do it in her current state

* Her arms are powered by a one-time gas filling and an AI (she didn’t need to keep reloading it/ the gas acted like blood in a human body)- They first started out as a remote controlled device- The AI is also in her neck so that she can control and talk to her arms easily

* The arms are mainly gas on the outside with a tube in the middle of them that discreets it- If you were to touch the gas it wouldn’t get on your hands because it forms a thin layer of air around any touching point- The rest of the arm is metal with sharp retractable spikes on the main body and “mouth”- The “mouth” is also shaped like spades

* The “heads” of the arms can act like drills and can rotate 360*

* She was going to change the gas to electric energy in order for her to fuse with it, but she never got the chance to

* Unlike Otto, her arms didn’t take right away; when she was programming her arms to be better for attachment, they sensed the AI in her neck and latched onto her back- While doing that, the arms started to turn her blood into gas in order for them to continue to function

* Because of the AI, she can annualize things like a supercomputer- Mainly annualizes height, weight, blood type, weather, math (any type), and ‘surface’ level defects like broken/injured bones/etc

* The metal “belt” around her waist can unclasp, but it can not come off fully- There is also a large amount of scarring underneath it

SO YOU NOW HAVE TO WAIT FOR ME TO CATCH UP TO YOUR CHAPTER COUNT. BECAUSE IM STICKING TO MY GUNS AND GOING C H R O N O L O G I C A L.

(anyway here be spoilers for chapter two of Ink in the Vase and the rest of the story.)

The focus of the chapter once again opens on Jimmy. Unlike the previous brief descriptions of setting, the author dedicates time into describing the place, subtly hinting that in the future we will be spending a lot more time within his home.

Once again the language here conveys the sense of the mental and emotional state of the character, reflected in the description of the house, "too blank", "the simple area look abandoned, lifeless", "empty rooms", "uneasy emptiness" and "absolute loneliness". I. This way, the author uses the house as a metaphor for Jimmy. Given what the reader knows at this point (that a significant amount of time has passed and that Jimmy has not been in contact with his community for that entire time) gives rise to concern. Once again the theme of internal narrative versus the external reality is explored. However this time, Jimmy's house acts as a foil to his own character and he plays the part of an observer. Like the neglected house, Jimmy has practiced emotional neglect over the year that occurred off page.

The author then parallels the cleaning of the house with the beginning of the emotional cleansing Jimmy embarks on, culminating in - "It hurt less to never be thought of, than to be rejected outright." - Jimmy begins the confrontation process and finds the heart of the matter of his anxiety and acknowledges it. Even though we don't see further progress in the narrative this is a powerful moment. It's the turning point in the mental health journey which is then reinforced by Jimmy not abandoning his task at hand (chores - even though the arguement could be made that it shows unwillingness to continue the confrontation process via distraction) a reader could choose to look at the continued tidying of the house metaphorically - if prior to this the house had been neglected and described with empty, lonely imagery, the process of tidying brings to mind a renewal or preparation for company - whether this be by guests, pets or otherwise.

Looking back at Jimmy's house being a metaphor for himself this could be called foreshadowing for the future state of his emotional and mental well being. Even though he does not currently coincide with the completely tidied home, he has begun the process to doing so.

This idea is then reinforced by Jimmy's behaviour immediately post tidying home, "Then he was grabbing his communicator from the nightstand and unlocking it to face the intimidating HUD of the messenger client.", this provides a stark contrast to the beginning of the chapter and yet another step on his mental health journey.

There are several healthy steps that Jimmy takes during this chapter which is directly contrasted against the setting the relevant discussion takes place in (Bed Wars, a Minecraft minigame placed over a void there players fight with melee and explosions to the death or victory). This of course could be foreshadowing reiterating the concept of the non-linearity of recovery. Mental health can be a battle, and you may feel like you lose, but you might also have achieved victory in a different way.

A point raised again and again in this setting is communication and the importance of it during a fight, which again is more foreshadowing (alongside Jimmy being placed into spectator mode). The metaphor of being placed in spectator mode pays off further on in the story.

All of this forward momentum suddenly halts when the author transitions the focus to Scott. Once again the sense of unease is built. Red flags of abuse creep in insidiously and realistically. The line "So he was careful to eat less, and never when they could see." confirms the suspicion of malnutrition that was built in the previous chapter from Jimmy's point of view.

This is immediately followed with "Sometimes he would worry that he had counted wrong, and when he asked they said to throw it up just in case. He got used to the burn." - encouragement of self destructive behaviour. Keeping the antagonist formless and featureless enables the reader to project their own worst fears onto this entity, making the dreadful sense of unease we feel for Scott and the situation he was in all the more intense - this is compounded with how the author indicates it had been 2 months after Double life and yet Scott had used up weeks after the first entered the relationship adjusting his diet to the point of which "his silhouette had changed" noticeably. Here once again the author hints to us that more time has passed than what has been indicated to the audience.

The concept of  d e t a c h m e n t  is a core spiritual principle practiced in various contemplative traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, and Stoicism. Detachment refers to the idea of liberating the ‘Being of Self’ from earthen attachments and desires in order to create space for inner peace, contentment, and spiritual fulfillment to thrive. As we move through life, we may find ourselves attached to certain people, possessions, or ideas. These attachments can consume and overwhelm us, blurring the lines between ‘Identity’ and ‘Creation’. When our identities become obscured by our creations, we lose touch with our ‘Divine Natures’ – the essence of our personal power. The spiritual practice of detachment facilitates a regular releasing of these attachments that bind our energies to the limitations of the tangible world, allowing for the embodiment of flow states that are necessary for harmony, abundance, and transcendence.

Detachment is often misunderstood as a rejection of the world and a withdrawal from one’s daily activities and responsibilities. The misconception arises from the attribution of apathy. While apathy is a disparity in one’s emotional connection with the surrounding world, detachment is intrinsically a state of emotional balance and strength that arises from a profound acceptance of the ‘Impermanence of Existence’. Thus, detachment is not a means to avoid, abandon, or neglect the world and its physical realities, but rather, it encourages the awareness of the ‘Moving Nature’ of the ‘Present’ and inspires a joy and empowerment for the freedom that impermanence allows.

The Season of Aquarius is the ‘kairos’ time – the seasonally appropriate time – to focus on the spiritual practice of detachment. Much like there are appropriate seasons for sowing and reaping, the Sun’s position in the constellation of Aquarius guides one to the relevant and spiritual lessons that require cultivating. Aquarius is the sign of the zodiac that represents innovation, originality, and independence, which are the traits that are birthed from a mastery in detachment and ascension, the two main spiritual disciplines of the Aquarius season. Those born under the sign of Aquarius are often seen as free-spirited individuals who are unafraid to challenge the rules of reality, move beyond assumed and conventional ways of life, and forge eccentric pathways forward. Aquarians pioneer the exploration of new experiences and ideas, with a cosmic perspective on the worldview.
