After you finally get Richard Grayson off your windowsill, you can sit down and eat

What makes him think that he can just walk into your life?! And with him being a vigilante, he most definitely could have saved you all that time ago! 

To clear your head, you try to remember what happened before you found yourself in your “brother’s” apartment. 

You and your friends wanted to go to a bar before college started…….a fight happened….How are your friends?! Did classes start already?! 

Opening your group chat with your friends, there are some messages about the bar fight, Red Hood, and how they’d visit you in the hospital

When making your message for the chat, you lie about being discharged from the hospital and ask if classes have already started

Your friends are so kind and update you on everything that has happened since you were in the hospital

The fall semester has begun but you should have an excuse because you were in the hospital

With some help, you were able to email all your professors about your absence and just hope they don’t drop you from the classes

Also hope they don’t ask for any documents from the hospital to confirm that you were there.

After a bit of rambling, you and your friends log off the group chat for the night. You never told them about what actually happened to you or what you found out about Nightwing, Red Hood, etc.

The information is difficult for you to process. Your whole family are famous vigilantes and no one came to save you when you were kidnapped. 

And Nightwing, he really was your first friend in Bludhaven and it always hurts to lose someone close

But he doesn’t deserve it. He doesn’t deserve your attention and time when he abandoned you just like the rest of the family.

You would have been dead if it wasn't for this weird thing that keeps your heart beating!

Maybe it would be a good idea to test this “power” of yours. You’ve died twice now and it seems that it takes a couple of days to heal and regain consciousness

Just for a small test, you make a small cut on your finger and watch it heal right before your eyes. You were hesitant to do these tests at first but this is also fascinating

Another cut is but a little bigger and it takes a little longer to heal. 

This continues a few times before you can have an idea of how long it takes for your body to heal itself. 

Once you’re done, you decide to go to sleep again and wait until it’s morning

Back at the manor, Tim has been hard at work. Making multiple plans that will end with you coming back home

Some are more intense than others but it can't be helped if you decide to be difficult 

Tim has also spent a lot of time researching your “powers”

Back when Dick saved you from that thief, Tim took the knife with your blood on it for research

Some interesting findings can be helpful if all else fails

It’s around noon when you wake up and your professors responded to your emails

They say that you’re allowed to keep your classes but there is a lot of classwork to catch up on

After eating some lunch, you sit down and look over all the work you’ve got to do. That is a lot….

You spend all day struggling and planning how you’ll get help

The next day, you decide to go to class. You go a little early because you knew you’d likely be lost

Luck seems to be on your side because you’re able to find your classroom! 

Walking inside, you talk to the professor and they tell you about a project for pairs

Thankfully, you’ve already been assigned a pair so you won’t be alone. You do feel bad about not being here to help though 

The professor points you in the direction of your partner and you introduce yourself. The moment your pair looks at you, your mood immediately takes a 180

Why is Tim Drake in your class? Doesn’t he go to a college in Gotham or something?

You pretend to be polite until the professor walks away and you glare at your partner while he just smiles at you

When you sit next to Tim, you try to sit as far away from him but he just moves closer

Before you can argue with him, the professor starts talking about the assignment for the day

You try to do the assignment alone but immediately get lost and you reluctantly accept Tim’s offers to help

Tim’s explanations were quite helpful and you both finished quite quickly. The room is filled with chatter so you take this moment to interrogate your “brother”

He gives vague answers to your questions but is sure to mention that he didn't want to leave his “sibling” by themself

Before you can respond, Tim cuts you off by saying he has something for you

You watch him carefully as he shows you a familiar item

Your phone

You instinctively reach for it but Tim stops you by grabbing your wrist

Glaring at Tim and his smiling face, he says he’ll give your phone back if you’d go back to the manor for at least one night

Tim repositions his hand on your wrist to be your hands intertwined 

You try to remove your hand but Tim persists. It isn't until you decline his offer does he put your hand down

You’ve lived a couple of weeks now without your phone so there is no need for it. Plus, you plan to buy a new one later

Tim doesn’t mention the family for the rest of the class

When class is over, you immediately go to the library (Almost got lost) to finish more work 

You settle at an empty table near a window and take out your laptop. Of course, it doesn't take long for you to struggle with the assignment and begin feeling annoyed

(Un)Luckly, Tim has found you and offered to help

With his help, you’re able to complete a few assignments before you have another class to go to

Tim invites you to the manor again but you still decline him

You only have two classes today so you hope to get home as soon as possible before running into Tim again

This repeats for a couple of more days

Everyday, you always have Tim in one of your classes

Tim attempts to bribe you to go to the manor with him, with your phone, playing games together, some other stuff you didn’t pay attention to

At least he never bribed you with his help on your classwork. Even after you catch up on old assignments, there are just so many concepts to understand

It’s annoying but Tim has successfully squeezed himself into your life by constantly being around

Something seems to have changed though because you notice Tim has started to leave you alone more

You don’t know why but would rather not question it. He’s a vigilante, right? He probably has some work to defeat a villain or something, you can literally care less about what Tim does

One day, you’re with your friends to participate in an event on campus. There are supposed to be games and free food so why not

Before the event began, there was a speech from the sponsor of the event

The sponsor is a lab group of some kind, promoting the study of life and encouraging new findings. You don’t know what it is but something about them sends a shiver down your spine

When the speech ends, you and your friends play a few games when a person from the sponsor stopped by

You all talk a bit and answer some minor questions before the person goes to a different group of people

At the end of the event, your friends offer to drop you off at home but you decline. You don’t live that far away and you also have pepper spray to keep yourself safe

While walking a person blocks your path. It’s that same sponsor person from the event

They go into more detail about the lab group they’re in, researching life and all

You do your best to remain calm, not showing your disturbance by their sudden presence

That is until they point out how there was a bar fight in the area and a victim went missing

A victim that looks exactly like you, covered in bruises and cuts, bleeding so much that the hospital wouldn’t be able to save them

Yet here you are, in perfect condition

This is when they finally reveal their intentions, wanting to figure out how you escape death

Offering a place in the lab group as a researcher and totally not a test subject

You pretend to consider their offer while carefully taking your pepper spray out of your pocket

It seems the person planned for this because they quickly take out and shoot at your hand holding the pepper spray

Terrified, you immediately make a run for it

You’re filled with so much adrenaline that you can't hear the person shout and the other gunshots that nearly miss you 

Running through multiple alleyways, something suddenly grabs you and pulls you into an almost pitch-black area

Things move quickly as an arm wrap around your waist, a whirling sound is suddenly hear above you, your feet leave the ground, and now you’re on a rooftop

You almost collapse once this new random person releases you from their hold

No longer in a dark alley, you can finally see who this new person is

Red Robin 

He gives you some time to catch your breath and calm down, putting his grappling gun back on his utility belt

Once your heart rate slows to a normal pace, you’re quick to show your annoyance at seeing the vigilante

Red Robin just seems to smile at you, not showing how your words affect him in any way

When you finally give Red Robin a chance to speak, he goes straight to the point

He admits to leaking some information to that lab group, just wanting you to see how you can live on your own

Even if Red Robin didn’t tell the lab group about your ability, they would have found out eventually 

That’s what happened to your mother after all

The vigilante then gives you two options

You can go with the research team and be tested on for the rest of your life or you can have a life back at the manor

Hell, there is a chance that your family of vigilantes can find and save your mother. Allowing you to reunite

As long as you returned home

With your two options, you find yourself back at Dick’s apartment

Dick bandaging up your hand, Jason carrying a box with stuff from your apartment, and Tim contacting Bruce

whether the internet becomes an intolerable surveillance state, ubiquitous subscription model, or unusably ad- or AI-ridden shithole, I think we need to remember

how to do things offline

either on your personal hard drive (just because it’s an app doesn’t mean the information is stored in your device) or on paper. I’m not saying the collapse of the internet is imminent, and I’m not suggesting we do everything completely without technology, or even stop using it until we have to. (to be clear, I also don’t think the internet will just blink out of existence, suddenly stop being a thing at all; rather I think it might continue to lose its usefulness to the point where it’s impossible to get anything done. anyway) but some people may have forgotten how we got by before the internet (I almost have!), and the younger generation might not have experienced it at all.

I figure most people probably use the internet mainly for communication with friends and family, entertainment and creation (eg. writing), and looking up how to do things, so here’s how to do those things offline:

First and most importantly, download everything important to you onto at least one hard drive and at least one flashdrive! files can get corrupted and hardware can get damaged or lost, but as long as you keep backup copies, you have much-closer-to-guaranteed access versus hoping a business doesn’t decide to paywall, purge, or otherwise revoke your access. I would recommend getting irreplaceable photos printed as well

download and/or print/write down:

anything important to you - photos/videos, journals, certificates, college transcripts

contact info - phone numbers and/or addresses of friends/family (know how to contact them if you can’t use your favourite messaging app), doctors (open hours would be good too), veterinarians if you have pets, and work

how-to’s - recipes (one, two), emergency preparedness (what do I do if… eg. I smell gas)

other things you might google: cleaning chemicals to NOT mix, what laundry tag symbols mean, people food dogs and cats can and can’t eat, plant toxicity to pets

and know offline ways to find things out - local radio station, newspaper, a nearby highway rest area might have a region map, public libraries usually have a bunch of resources

also, those of you who get periods should strongly consider not using period tracking apps! here’s how to track your period manually

free printable period tracker templates (no printer? public libraries usually charge a few cents per page, or you can recreate it by hand)

moving on to entertainment, you can still get most media for free! it’s completely legal to download your favourite movies to your own personal hard drive, you just can’t sell or distribute copies (not legal advice)

movies: wcostream.tv (right click the player) - the url changes every once in a while but usually redirects; I recently noticed that it’s hiding a lot of movies behind “premium,” so it may or may not work anymore | download youtube videos

music: how to get music without streaming it | legal free downloads

read, write, draw, or whatever your craft is, sing, dance, clean, reorganise, take a bath

go outside - excuses include napping (if safe), eating, reading, finding cool plants/animals/rocks, playing with the dog

Hello! It’s me! And I’m back on my crossover bs again

A few years ago I had an idea for a Kirby demon slayer crossover but at the time my ideas for Meta Knight weren’t fully fleshed out. You can read some more of my ideas in the read more!

So originally my idea was that Kirby was an extremely talented young urchin that Meta Knight picked up in a town or a forest somewhere. Meta is the last remaining member of the Star Estate, a group of talents swordsman in the Corps that was nearly completely wiped out within the last century. Meta Knight, finding Kirby, saw not only extreme power and raw potential, but also a way to revive the Star Estate through a young talent that may grow up to be even stronger than him.

This inevitably happens, but happens much sooner than Meta expects, when Kirby is only 10 years old. Kirby learns the Breathing Style of the stars that Meta teaches him, but also has a terrifying talent for mimicry, and is able to temporarily copy any Breathing Style that he witnesses. Having surpassed Meta Knight in power and rank, Kirby takes Meta Knight’s official seat among the Hashira. That said, Kirby doesn’t have much of a mind for the more tactical and official side of the Corps’s duties, so Meta tends to take over for him during meetings.

Reactions to Kirby’s presence are mixed. Many of the Hashira bear some amount ill will against Meta, believing that Meta took in a child and trained him just to revive the seat of the Stars. They dislike that a child is fighting their battles for them, but have to begrudgingly acknowledge Kirby’s sheer strength. This results in a lot of people being rather surprised at just how tenderly Meta Knight treats his little ward, buying him little gifts and souvenirs wherever they go and making sure that he is healthy and safe.

Similarly to Urokodaki, Meta wears a mask to conceal his face, since he has been told that his face is too kind or too soft for his profession. He has offered to make Kirby one as well, but a mask would not do much to hide Kirby’s height and age anyways. Meta also carries two swords but only uses one— the second one is one of Kirby’s spares, just in case Kirby accidentally forgets or loses his own. (This happened about three times before Meta Knight started carrying the spare around.)

In this au, Dedede is a prefectural governor who continued ruling over his land after the daimyo-ruled han were abolished for prefectures. He comes from a long line of aristocracy, and is aware of demons wandering around at night but doesn’t get involved much with the demon slaying side of things. Meta is an old friend of his, and keeps him updated on recent local happenings with the demons.

1st, Lets start off with.. The Ancients!

| Pure Vanilla/Empty Vanilla

(Ep7) Empty vanilla is now a shell of his former self. His souljam exploding unknowingly whilst falling down the tower. Injuring him in the chest and half of his face, even severely damaging his memories… Now with those damaged memories. He contemplates if he is “Pure Vanilla” or “Truthless Recluse”. Residing in shadow milk’s domain to find answers. (At least, thats what he’s been told.)

As for Gingerbrave, Strawberry, And Wizard cookie. They all are forced to reside in the spire. Reluctantly joining shadow milk TEMPORARILY obeying orders as they try to escape and recover Empty Vanilla’s memories. (cant think of a color palette)

– Extra Info!:

Empty Vanilla was given his name by none other than Black Sapphire! He found it fitting considering he doesn’t know what he is.

His personality is a mix of Pure Vanilla & Truthless Recluse. Kind and forgiving but sometimes rude and pissed (Mostly to Shadow Milk ☺️)

80% of the time you’ll find him sleeping. The 20% is him doing orders/chores

Also Re-learning both Light magic & Dark Moon magic. That wont go wrong right?

He can see WAYY better now and doesn’t need his staff to see! He only uses it to do magic. (which is barely)

| Golden Cheese/Lusterless Cheese

(Ep5) Burning Spice had TOOO much fun fighting with Golden Cheese that he shattered her souljam in the process. But even after doing that. He still continued to fight her until she somehow managed to escape. Crumbling and bleeding jam as she was holding a piece of her souljam. That had enough power to heal her but… She couldn’t reclaim it. For she has lost to Burning Spice. After that she manages to find Smoked Cheese and barely escape together… They’re now both lost in the desert trying to hide from the Spice Swarm.

Smoked Cheese is in worse condition. His arm almost falling off yet surprisingly still very strong. He still has the soulcheeses with him and vows to protect it with his life despite his dying state.

– Extra Info!:

Lusterless Cheese was a nickname given to her by the Spice Swarm after she lost to Burning Spice. She isnt really that shiny and golden now is she?. Only Smoked Cheese calls her Golden Cheese. (Also just a name so i can differentiate her from canon and this au)

Constantly gets reminded of that fight and is slowly losing hope

She took extra clothes from a nearby village due to hers being heavily damaged & dirty. And has wrapped bandages over all her scratches.

Her wings are slowly regrowing thanks to the bit essence of her souljam!

Speaking of souljam, Burning Spice is delighted by this change. Trying to find out what the shattered souljam can do.

| Dark Cacao/Soulless Cacao

(Ep3) Kneeling down infront of Mystic Flour as he accepts his fate and sees his souljam getting taken.. Mystic Flour attempts to turn him into flour for she feels pity for him. But alas.. No matter how hard she tried, He wouldnt disolve completely. Even after giving up. Until she realized his souljam was shaking uncontrollably, Then—Poof! Shatters unknowingly and simply loses its shine. She is lead to believe this is fate telling her that Dark Cacao could be of good use to her. So she recruits him to become his servant/devoted follower. He accepts willing to find a purpose.

As for his warriors. They are lost in beast yeast, Currently having made their own campsite while trying to find their king.

– Extra Info!:

Soulless Cacao was a name given by Cloud Hatae (Yes this 💩 is alive). Just a random nickname on spot since he has changed.

He dosent use his sword anymore. Doesn’t commit violence at all

As days go by, His memories fade away bit by bit.

He loves watering the plants of the ivory pagoda. And has made good friends with the guards and even Peach

Slowly becoming a peach bao lover..

Keeps his cape/cloak thingy as dear memory/remembrance

2nd, The beasts!

| Shadow Milk

Ever since Pure Vanilla has fallen under his control. Hes been more happy? than ever with a new comrade by his side! But even with all the pieces from the shattered souljam. Its power has.. vanished. He cant reclaim it back. Hes been researching on how he can re-piece its power back while also keeping an eye on what Vanilly’s doing. Giving him books and scrolls to keep him busy and to also try getting his memories back (but slowly reconsidering whether he likes him this way or not) Only time will tell i suppose? Overall still your same silly ol’ jester.

Candy apple and Black sapphire have been tasked to help out Empty Vanilla while hes busy. And lets just say they have mixed feelings about it.

Hes been slowly growing paranoid over pu- Empty Vanilla for a while now. He just dosent feel like the same cookie to him.

Smilk LOVES making outfits for everyone. Hes the one that made Empty Vanilla’s , Gingerbeave, Strawberry, And Wizard cookie’s outfits! He purposely made them all match :D

Ever since Soulless Cacao’s arrival. She’s changed a bit. Being less apathetic and more merciful than usual. Even after persuading Soulless Cacao to her side, She couldnt reclaim the souljam either. Unlike Shadow Milk who couldnt reclaim it due to the lack of pieces. She has all and yet all it’ll so is flicker slighty. It has little to no power left but she dosent thrive for the half of her power anymore. She’s just been chilling with the rest until their inevitable doom of disintegrating to flour.

Shes been enjoying the stay of Soulless cacao lately. Feeling the joy of life

Has a spider form when shes mad or pissed, And hides her extra arms inside her robes >:D

Regularly lets Cloud Haetae and sometimes Soulless Cacao fix her hair

Secretly enjoys peach baos and its flavor. and is trying to secretly make her own garden-

Her eyes are scary to everyone except Soulless. And maybee cloud haetae but depends on the situation honestly

💠 here and I just realized something about mha’s narrative is that these kids have no down time whatsoever. Like the narrative gives them no time to breathe, it’s always something that fowards the narrative. They want to go to the mall? Boom! Shigaraki has to be there. Training camp to be better heroes? Let’s just have one of these kids get kidnapped and let 5 other kids rescue him at the downfall of a mentor. Not to mention THE ENTIRE WAR ARC BECAUSE THESE ARE STILL FIRST YEARS (iirc on the timeline that they were first years during war arc). While I get why the writing is like this, shonen jump could've cancelled it at any moment, it just kinda rushes everything and leaves most of the cast to be bland/forgettable (most of 1-A) if not outright have their writing thrown in the trash (I still will not forgive them for throwing the Tenya and Ochaco dynamic with Izuku away).

Like the most they get is the sports festival, some of the training camp arc before it gets thrown out, the cultural festival and maybe the internships but Tsuyu is the only one shown to get a reasonable break in the anime exclusive episodes.

Like let me see Momo trying “commoner’s food”/street food for the first time and seeing how hard people work on the streets, let them having a day to go back to the beach Izuku cleaned up (because I don’t think they ever mentioned it after the early series), or a day where they all talk about updating their hero costumes or Izuku mentioning things about their quirks (kinda like how you were sprinkling in for the rewrite). Just GIVE THEM AND THE STORY SOME DOWN TIME AND LET THE CHARACTERS DEVELOP AGH.

NAH BUT LIKE FOR REAL!?!?

People can say what they want about filler or the obligatory beach episodes, but they were great! Just seeing these characters having fun, seeing how they act outside of high-tension, high-stake scenarios.

Who organises hang-outs? Who comes thirty minutes early, who comes an hour late, (totally not me, sorry guys), who always brings painkillers or lip balm or plasters/bandages? Who brings out a deck of cards, who cheats, whose poker face is terrible, who loses every game?

It's great seeing characters, especially teenagers, act their age. Not only does it serve to make the bonds between them feel a bit more real, a bit more strong, but it also allowed the audience to get attached to them properly.

See, I don't have an issue with Tomura showing up at the mall episode. I would have just liked to see the kids actually have fun before the sprinkle of plot development.

Show me Momo or Tenya or Shouto buying that trinket Ochako kept staring at but couldn't afford. Show me Mina beating everyone on DDR, and Tooru trying to compete like a fool. Show me Izuku or Mezou nearly breaking the punching machine. Show me Denki or Hanta making Momo and Shouto try crappy fast food and them actually enjoying it.

The timeline of MHA is ridiculous. Like, pace yourself please?? At least, show me what the kids get up to in the spring, summer, and winter breaks.

Downtime and breaks are extremely important, even in plot-heavy works. It's not just the characters who need a break, but the readers too. It gets exhausting reading about all this tragic stuff, maybe a gag here or there.

I guess Horikoshi may have been afraid that the momentum would be killed, but curbing momentum is what makes final acts feel so grand!

To compare it to a song or a musical number, you never want the score to feel stagnant. If a songs starts slow, the end will be all-out, only going down at the very end. See: It's All Coming Back To Me Now. Starts slow, ends with a massive note, and Celine Dion is joined by other vocals.

If a song starts high and up-beat, what composers will do is drop the melody, either cutting out the vocals or the beat, then let it all go out. Like... Uptown Funk with the toned-down bridge, segwaying into a powerful ending.

Stories work in the same way.

If you continuously build that momentum, without a break, it's going to peak early and feel stagnant the longer it goes. Horikoshi refused to give characters more than a chapter to settle down, and it made it all feel so same-y.

That's part of the reason by the ending of the Final War doesn't feel impactful at all. You're not left thinking, 'wow'. You're thinking, 'finally'.

- As far as our current MC can tell, Sylus is a powerful man who doesn’t seem to fear much, if anything. He knows he’s strong, he knows he’s capable, and he gets what he wants, even if he has to fight or kill for it. He's decisive, and can manipulate most any situation into his favor. No matter what, he always has at least some control over whatever situation he’s in.

- But that confidence was born out of need, guilt, and fear.

- A failure to protect the person who made everything worth while.

- Regardless of whatever what took you from him in the past, whether he could realistically prevent it or not, he refuses to let it happen again.

- You were his everything, able to calm him down no matter how angry he got. You gave him the ability to see the beauty in little things, moments of peace amidst the storm.

- Losing you, he may as well have lost all sense of himself too.

- Then, he finds you again. You don’t know him yet, but he knows you.

- He watches and waits, curious if you would seek him out on your own.

- Now that you are within his reach, he refuses to let anything happen to you again. He can’t lose you again.

- He’d sooner let the world burn.

- This comes across as oddly protective and possessive. He refuses to let you get hurt in battle, claiming he prefers you getting to play nurse and patch you up.

There is a saying in Italian that goes, “arrampicarsi sugli specchi.” It translates to “to climb on mirrors” in English, and while the literal meaning may seem to make even less sense, the actual meaning of the phrase is worth knowing.

The gist of it is to intentionally and falsely portray something as the opposite of what it is, to try to prove that black is white. It’s about twisting a narrative by misrepresenting truths and making falsehoods appear authentic.

When I carried myself strong in front of my mom while trying to hide the cracks in my mask, she would pull me aside and ask if I was truly all right. I would lie to save face, not wanting her to think I was unhappy or ungrateful for the life I had.

“Smettila di salire su quegli specchi, tesoro.” She would say. “Stop climbing on those mirrors, darling.”

She could always tell just by one glance I was pretending to be content. It was like she was the only person in the world who understood and listened to me and my feelings. She made sure to stick up for me in situations I wasn’t comfortable in and that I got my way when necessary.

When she passed away so suddenly, it was devastating for me. Of course, any girl losing their mother would be heartbroken; she was my friend and caregiver, not to mention she gave me life itself. But the day I lost my mom was the day I lost my voice. I no longer had a say in anything involving my day-to-day life or my role in the family.

With no one else caring about my point of view, I’ve spent the last several years pretending to care about theirs.

So even though my grandmother picked out the ugliest plum-colored gown for the gala tomorrow night, of course, I feigned appreciation. It was a floor-length dress with an A-line silhouette and a neckline that was so high it guaranteed my breasts would stay tucked away. There were a lot of sequins all over the dress; I could be a disco ball.

It looked like a mother-of-the-bride type of dress. The gown was no doubt meant for older, mature women, which makes sense why my grandmother liked it.

“Please don’t tell me that's for you,” My uncle Yoongi said mockingly, having suddenly entered the lounge from behind where I was sitting.

I shrugged, not even bothering to turn and meet his eyes, and continued to fixate on the dress draped over the chair in front of me. “What’s wrong with it?”

I could make a long list of the things wrong with the dress, but what's the point of that? Why would I go through the trouble and have to keep it to myself anyway? My uncle didn’t even care about what I actually thought about the dress and was just teasing.

Officer Min Yoongi had a knack for trouble. He went around the city not just looking for lawbreakers but for anyone whose patience was already worn thin. Anyone who looked like they might snap with the right nudge. With a crooked smile and a few well-placed words, he baits them into arguments, stirring the pot just enough to watch the anger spark in their eyes.

He thrived on that tension, the moment right before things got ugly when pride and fear tangled up and people showed him just how weak they were. Yoongi wore authority like a weapon. The second his games tipped toward chaos, he dropped the smirk and replaced it with a cold and commanding scowl.

Backed by his badge and the weight of the law, he loved turning petty arguments into official business, shoving people against walls, barking orders, and escalating harmless situations until they spiraled entirely out of hand. It was never about justice for him. It was about control, about reminding everyone who held the power.

Even his own family knew better than to stay out of his way, to never cross him. Everyone looked the other way, including Mayor Hoseok, pretending not to see when Yoongi pushed it too far. Others, like Dad, admired him, mistaking his bullying for strength.

But the truth was more straightforward, much darker; Min Yoongi was a man who needed the world to fear him because he feared what he’d be without it—just another small, angry man with nothing else to provide him with worth.

“Are you serious?” His baffled tone pulled me out of my thoughts about him. “You can’t go to the gala with that? I know you’re a little weirdo, but this is just too much?”

Keeping to myself and indulging in introverted hobbies apparently makes me a “weirdo.”

“Well, I don't know if you care to know, but Dad asked Grandma and his new wife to pick out my dress. I’m not even allowed to dress myself anymore.” I informed him and rolled my eyes, saying that last part under my breath.

“Hey,” He shouted. “Don’t disrespect your father like that?”

Like clockwork, there it was. I could just feel the satisfaction my uncle was feeling radiating off of him. But I don’t have the energy he wants from me to keep fighting back. The past few days blurred together, heavy and colorless, like walking through thick fog. I haven’t stopped thinking about what my dad declared were my plans for the future.

He told me I would be moving out of state to attend a university I never was interested in, studying something I knew nothing about. It felt like the life he was planning belonged to someone else. But it was always like that, wasn’t it? My life never felt like mine at all; I was just an empty husk of a person going in whatever direction Dad wanted me to.

And part of me was devastated; I had real plans. I had dreams I held onto so closely, so quietly, for years. But the other part was just too numb. I know I should’ve fought back. I should have been more angry, but instead, I felt…nothing. I felt nothing but a dull ache somewhere deep in my chest, too faint to move me but too constant to ignore.

But what is the point of doing anything? What was the point in planning anything, wanting anything, when my fate had already been written for me?

When I didn’t bother to respond to Yoongi, I heard him slowly approach me. I stood still while leaning back on the couch with my arms crossed, never looking away from the ugly dress. There was nothing more I was meant to say to him other than “Thanks for the ride” when he decided he was done messing with me and took me home.

“Are you in a bad mood tonight, Y/N?” He gibed, taking his place beside me and wrapping his arm around me to pull me closer. “Did your boyfriend break up with you?”

Again, no response. Not even a falter to my breath to indicate Yoongi’s words bothered me. I couldn’t break out of my numb state. It was like my body was holding me prisoner, and I couldn't react how I wanted, only watch it play out.

And Yoongi noticed something was up, and it didn’t sit right with him the way I was reacting. He continued his tactic to try and get anything out of me, rambling about everything that would normally upset me. Not being allowed to date, have a car, or pick out my friends.

“You’re forgetting a few things,” I interrupted his blabbing, and I could hear his breath hitch. “My dad doesn’t love me, and to prove it, he's sending me away to university so that I can become another cog in this machine of his I want nothing to be a part of. How about the fact I want nothing more than to be a mother and bear children, but my body autonomy isn’t even my own, and the family matriarch decides when he is ready for grandkids?

“Or better yet, Dad bought me an entire loft apartment to live in, but I'm not allowed to head back home until he says ok. So I think a stupid fucking dress for the gala celebrating me is the least of my worries. Especially when in all actuality it's nothing more than a glorified event to get more investors so he can grow and continue to treat his daughter like shit.”

Finally, I’m released from my internal cell, and the first thing I do is cry. I sob so hard it confuses Yoongi, and he leans away, my wailing filling the room, looking for more witnesses to this embarrassing breakdown. If anyone else were home right now, I'd be worried, but I was sort of dumped back at my family’s estate while my grandmother and stepmother went out again. It's kind of unfortunate my uncle had to be here to witness me at my lowest.

What I was expecting was for him to tell me to cut it out, stop crying, and act like a big girl. But instead, he moved closer and wrapped his arms around me, albeit in an awkward hug. It caught me off guard, and that forced me to calm down slightly, focussing all of my attention on slowing my breaths.

“Look uhh…I know you’re upset with the arrangements,” Yoongi started to speak uncomfortably. “Being a part of this family isn’t easy. I’ve done things in my past I didn’t want to, and I uhh…I’m not proud of it. But your father is a wise man whose every move is calculated to ensure the protection and class of this family.”

“I wish Mom were here. She’d know what to do,” I whispered, trying to hide the cracks in my voice.

Yoongi sighed and let go of his embrace. I began to wish that we could stay like that a little longer; I was already missing his warmth. I sat up straight and began to wipe away my tears while he took that as his opportunity to get up off the coach. He stretched and audibly groaned like he was trying to expel his embarrassment from making that mushy speech.

I watched him as he slipped his hands into his uniform pockets and started to make his way back around the couch. I sighed deeply and scrunched up my face due to the cringe, realizing that I had an embarrassing breakdown in front of Yoongi. He will surely use this moment against me in the future, but for now, I'm happy he didn't take advantage of my mental state.

“Are you coming, crybaby?”

Maybe I shouldn’t give him the benefit of the doubt just yet.

I reluctantly pushed myself up off the couch, snatched up my ugly dress, and followed my uncle out of the lounge. After a long and dragging day, I was so ready to go home and collapse in bed. I want nothing more than to get a good night's rest. After all, I'm spending all of tomorrow getting ready for the pointless gala.

But I was super confused when Yoongi turned right towards the staircase and not left towards the front door. My footsteps slowed as I adjusted to the change in direction. Why was he taking me deeper into the house? There's nothing left in here for me, not to mention it was already so late to be wandering the halls.

Well, he was my ride anyway; I didn't have much of a choice, and curiosity was getting the better of me. I quickly caught up to him and walked up the flight of stairs.

There were many rooms I wasn’t allowed in, and I'm not even sure what could be up here that would be of interest to me. Even though this was my family’s house, I couldn't help but feel like I was trespassing. The second-floor hallway we walked through mainly contained sleeping quarters; even my old bedroom was down this way.

But my heart dropped when my uncle stopped in front of a room with large white double doors and an intricate floral design painted on the wood. I met yoongis gaze with wide eyes, not believing what he was doing.

He reached into his pocket, and with a jangle, he pulled out his large key ring. He searched for a specific key, and with a little struggle, he separated from the rest. I held my hand out to receive it, and taking a closer look, I confirmed everything.

“Yoongi, I-I don’t know what to say…”

“How about starting with ‘thank you’?” He chuckled, stepping back and motioning me towards the door. “And be careful with that. Your dad doesn’t want anyone in there, but I figured you could find a nicer dress to wear tomorrow. After all, you don’t want to be representing the family in the old lady getup.”

I started to tear up a little and rushed toward Yoongi, hugging him to show my appreciation. He has no idea how much this small gesture means to me or how much trouble he could be in for giving me the key in the first place. Afterward, I wasted no time unlocking the door. I had to see with my own eyes what was behind it.

And even after all these years, it still smelt like her. A lump in my throat began to form as a result of the emotions I felt just being in her old space. Dad wanted this space to be preserved perfectly; no one was allowed to enter the room, let alone touch her things. But the memory of her locked away and out of sight was doing her a complete disservice.

How often does he even enter this room? Would he even notice if I started taking Mom’s stuff back home with me so that she could be honored and remembered properly?

“Don’t take too long. I got to get back to work.”

I can worry about that another day. Right now, let's see if Mom can help me find the perfect dress for the gala.

reading update: june 2023

as promised (to myself) I spent all of gay months reading books by and/or about the gays, no exceptions! (unless you count the heaps of old Batman comics I was reading, but come on. it's all pretty fruity.) the trend will be continuing into July as well because I overshot and still have book I need to finish, so in the immortal words of Janelle Monáe: happy pride forever!

anyway, what have I actually been reading?

Empress of Forever (Max Gladstone, 2019) - man, I've been meaning to read this FOREVER! and I'm glad I finally did. Gladstone's space opera follows ultrawealthy tech genius Vivian Liao, a sort of dykey Lex Luthor who's CERTAIN that she's the good guy. okay, yes, she's trying to get control of the nukes, but she's not going to use them. it's just that the world's a mess and she needs to be in charge. unfortunately our girl Vivian doesn't get far in her master plan before she's transported across the galaxy and finds herself on the run from the all-powerful Empress in the company of a cybernetic monk named Hong and the legendary space pirate Zanj, the Empress' greatest enemy. from there our heroes are off on a slow, messy quest across the galaxy as they make new friends, grow as people, and strive to bring the Empress down. it's a very long book and can feel slow in places, but all of the time devoted to fleshing out the characters ultimately pays off as their stories converge into a resonant narrative about the notion of identity and what it means to be yourself. if you like Becky Chambers' Wayfarer books of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, get on this shit.

Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men (Jane Ward, 2016) - Ward is a brilliant queer feminist writer; rigorous and insightful while keeping her work imminently readable. while the title may sound facetious, Ward actually takes entirely at face value that there are men having sex with each other an engaging in otherwise homoerotic activities - mutual jerkoffs, hazing rituals that involve anal penetration - that sincerely aren't stemming from a place of gay desire and asks us what the fuck we're supposed to make of that. what results is a fascinating look at masculinity and the intricate rituals that both subvert and maintain it. shockingly thought provoking for a book that contains so many transcribed craigslist posts of men looking for straight guys to have totally normal hetero dudesex with!

The Latinos of Asia: How Filipinos Break the Rules of Race (Anthony Christian Ocampo, 2016) - I was lucky enough to get to see Ocampo (who is gay) speaking at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity this year, and naturally I had to buy one of his books while I was there. I strongly suspect he's about to become one of my new favorite nonfiction writers, because the Latinos of Asia was a brilliant read that I really couldn't put down. Ocampo (who's also Filipino!) delves into the formation of Filipino-Americans' racial identity, and finds that many feel caught between the most conventionally accepted racial categories - feeling alienated from the idea of Asian identity, which is often perceived as pertaining to East Asians like Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, and instead relating much more firmly to Mexican-Americans and other Latinos. it's a FASCINATING study on race and one (of many!) loopholes that exists in this very large, messy, totally made up construct of race.

A Lady for a Duke (Alexis Hall, 2022) - for my pride month romance novel I wanted to read something that I might actually like. I've previously adored Hall's genre-fucking ultra-queer Sherlock Holmes pastiche, the Affair of the Mysterious Letter, and Lady for a Duke was really well-reviewed, so my hopes were high! and you know what? I fucking loved this. it was like cotton candy, perfectly sweet and made to be inhaled without a second thought. Our Heroine Viola was the heir to an estate who faked her death at Waterloo so that she could run away and be herself - that's right baby, this is a 19th century trans lady romance! she reconnects with her old BFF the Duke of Gracewood, who's been catatonically depressed since losing his best friend in the war, and reader, you will not believe what happens next. just kidding, you totally will: they want to kiss each other so bad! they're yearning so bad and it's great. it's a very silly book and Gracewood is the most unexpectedly forward-thinking 19th century duke EVER who is instantly down to accept Viola entirely as a woman and thinks that having biological children is overrated, and you know what? that rules. I'm not reading this book for historical accuracy I'm reading it to watch a man beg his girlfriend to fuck him tenderly in the ass. and she does!!! if I'm being honest everything after they finally hook up is kind of nonsense and the book probably is too long, but god it's a delightful time.

Chlorine (Jade Song, 2023) - back in the days of twitter I started following Jade Song as soon as they announced selling this book, the story of a competitive high school swimmer succumbing to obsession as she fantasizes about becoming a mermaid. finally getting to pick up the book from the library and actually read it felt crazy after existing in potentia for so long! while Song's novel is a little rough in some places in exactly the way I expect from a debut, it's still gripping and visceral. our protagonist lives in an intense and demanding world, striving to please an overly handsy coach, wanting to please the immigrant parents she can barely speak to, stumbling through sex with boys on her team while longing for her female best friend. through it all she fixates on mermaids, and the story is told in flashbacks building up to a drastic act of self-mutilation at a swim meet. it's definitely not the right book for the faint of heart or anyone looking for feel-good fluff, but it's harrowing in the best way.

Vagabonds! (Eloghosa Osunde, 2022) - gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! Osunde celebrates queer life - those called vagabonds, society's outliers - in Lagos, Nigeria, slipping between the real world of social stigma, oppressive religion, judgmental family, and dangerous politics, and the world of magic, gods, and the unreal, blending the two together in an effortlessly dizzying effect. the ultrawealthy hide behind layers of flawless masks to conceal their identities, a lonely woman dying of cancer summons up a daughter than only she can see, and a young man channels the devil to raise his murdered lover. while the stories start bleak, firmly establishing the danger of life on the margins, they gather speed with increasing warmth and love as the story progresses, eventually bringing all of our protagonists together in glorious, life-affirming celebration of vagabonds and all who love them. Nigeria, in Osunde's hands, reads much like family - imperfect, sometimes even awful, but also capable of harboring tremendous love, surprising tenderness, and still worth holding out hope for. I think measuring books in terms of relatability is a fool's game, but as an American queer watching more and more legislation and persecution roll out against my people each day, it was hard not to feel a cord being struck. Vagabonds! is a beautiful reminder that queer resilience is eternal, and reader, I did cry.

Quietly Hostile (Samantha Irby, 2023) - I was a ride or die bitch for Sam Irby even before she picked up and moved to my small Michigan city, effectively becoming my neighbor. (not really, but she is married to the mother of a friend of a friend, so.) despite this, I will freely admit that I was a little underwhelmed by her last release, 2020's Wow, No Thank You. it's possible that WNTY was damned by its March 2020 release, putting it in the awkward position of being a humorous essay collection creeping out into the world at a time when everyone was paranoid and nothing was funny; maybe on a reread I would receive it a bit more warmly.
