Master Builder
Lauren Hemp x Reader
Summary: You work at Legoland
Tumblr media
You spent most of your time tucked away in your workshop, isolated from the rest of the world.
Your work was repetitive most of the time, forcing Lego bricks together and gluing them in place, but you loved it. You had done a lot to become the head Master Builder of the Legoland Windsor Resort and sitting in your little room with your earphones in and nothing but Lego bricks was soothing.
You got to do what you loved day-in, day-out and watch as your creations got displayed around the theme park.
You weren't used to having people in your workspace (all of your coworkers knew not to interrupt you while you were building) so you didn't expect the thunder of feet on the stairs as you worked on your life size model of a leopard.
You paid no mind to it though. Sometimes the park booked schools to come look at the workshops and as the head Master Builder, they always ended up in your one last.
Sure, little kids were a bit annoying and always tried to touch your models but you could tolerate them for the ten minutes they spent in your room.
So, you didn't even turn around as you dug through your drawer of black bricks.
Arms wrapped around your shoulders and a familiar wet kiss was placed on your cheek.
You wiped it off in disgust and tore off your headphones, whipping your head around to glare at the offender.
Chloe Kelly grinned back at you.
"Must you do that?"
"Course I do!" She said," Only the best for Mrs Hemp!"
"The fact that you think you're the best is very arrogant," You replied, hunching back over your model with the black brick you had fished out.
"y/n's our head master builder," The tour guide said," It seems that she knows a few of you already..."
"You can leave them here," You said," I can take them from here."
"Are you sure? You're-"
"I'm nearly done. Can you call the site team and get them to move this outside the gift shop?"
"Of course."
You glued on your last piece and took your usual photo of the model before turning around to face the rest of the Lionesses. You hadn't met many of them in person apart from the City girls, whom you each greeted, but your eyes were immediately drawn to your wife.
Like whenever she ended up at your work, she was digging through the drawers of your mini models.
"If you're going to take some of them," You said," Then I'm going to need some of my other ones back. You're robbing me blind, Lauren."
She smiled at you. "You can make more. What's yours is mine, right?"
You rolled your eyes. "You're so lucky we're married."
She pressed a little kiss to your lips. "I know."
You picked out a few little parrots and a wolf for Lauren to put in her bag. "I didn't know you were coming today."
"It was meant to be a surprise. We've got the next few days off before we fly out."
You kissed her cheek. "It's nice that you came to see me." You slipped your hand into hers, swinging it for a moment before sending her an ear-splitting smile.
She shrugged. "I just came for the Lego."
You pulled your hand away. "In that case, I'm sure that Chloe can take your place."
"You're a catch!" Chloe crowed from the other side of your workshop," I'll fill Lauren's space if you're asking!"
"Hey!" Lauren grabbed your hand again. "Get your own wife!" She squeezed your hand and pouted in a way that had you kissing it off her face.
"Come on, pouty," You said," You've only got a few more hours before you have to go to your hotel. Don't waste them being grumpy."
Lauren sighed. "Only if you take me to see Miniland. It's very mean that you guys keep updating it while I'm in Manchester."
You laughed, already pulling her out of your workshop by the big double doors that led into the park. "The work doesn't stop just because Lauren Hemp isn't here."
"It should," Lauren said as you led her and the group over to Miniland," You know how much I love coming here."
"You love coming here because you get in for free," You reminded her with a soft smile," Always take advantage of me, you are."
"Only when it's about Lego."
From behind you, you could hear one of the girls say in amusement," Of course, Hempo's wife works at Legoland. I don't know what I expected."
"There's a bit of a surprise for you now," You said as you wandered through Miniland (with the same amount of pride you always got from looking at your work)," And I want you to be very happy because I had to fight tooth and nail for this."
Lauren's brow furrowed as she frowned. "Huh? But you didn't know we were coming."
"I didn't," You confirmed," But you haven't been here for a while now. I did want to show you on our anniversary but," You shrugged," You're here now and you would have found out anyway."
You covered her eyes with your hands and guided her over to the model of Wembley.
"Okay," You said, feeling an anxious kind of excitement filling your body," Are you ready?"
"Ready."
You took your hands away from her to reveal the final of the Euros made out of Lego figures.
It had taken you a while to get permission to change what was going on in the model and even longer to get speciality minifigures made to represent everybody.
Lauren looked wildly between you and the model even as all of her teammates crowed out and exclaimed their excitement.
"Do you like it?" You asked.
"Baby," She said," I love it!" Her hands wrapped around your waist and she spun you around. "You're so brilliant! Look! That's me!"
"Good god," Chloe muttered behind you," She's more excited about a bloody Lego figure than having her shirts sold."

The Fortnight video foreshadows the convergence of Taylor Swift and her brand
In her videos, Taylor has continually played with the idea of herself as a person versus as a brand. These portrayals have almost been adversarial in nature. Think about the relationship between the two life sized Anti-Hero Taylors. The hooded robot Taylor who got to exist in the world while her bare counterpart was trapped in glass. Etc.
The Fortnight video introduces similar characters but flips the script because there isn’t a me versus her dynamic anymore. Instead, there is a story about coming together.
A scene by scene breakdown:
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift™️ is chained to a bed in a white gown with a spicy slit and garter. A faceless nurse enters walking upside down on the ceiling (a continued theme suggestive of PR games). The nurse presents “Forget Him” pills, arguably reminiscent of a dark time where the world thought they could “cure” homosexuality. After Taylor Swift™️ begrudgingly takes her dose, the nurse unchains her.
We then see Taylor Swift™️ approach a two way mirror and wipe the mask off her face, revealing face tattoos we know to be Post Malone’s in real life. This reveal is setting the scene that within this video Post Malone represents Taylor’s inner self, her true soul behind the veil of celebrity. I’ll call him True Taylor.
Tumblr media
Next, the mask is back and we see Taylor Swift™️ walk out of the observation room and into the workspace. She goes from wearing a leggy white gown with garter to a fully covered black poet-esque dress. She isn’t dressed for voyeuristic eyes anymore, she’s dressed to work on her art. I love this light to dark transition because black can be seen as the absence of light. Fitting for a tortured poet who can’t live her truth in public with her sunny muse by her side.
Note that we don’t get to see black dress Taylor Swift™️ through the two way mirror. She exists behind the bright lights of fame, making art in a room hidden from our view. Maybe the pills numb her enough to twist the art for an audience who likes to her to be chained to a bed while they watch her suffer.
Tumblr media
But wait Taylor Swift™️ and True Taylor are collaborating. They start work separately but their art eventually drifts out of their typewriters, combining into a white light that bursts into a rainbow. Remember how I said black light is the absence of light? Well white light is comprised of all hues on the visible light spectrum.
We know there are layers to Taylor’s music: the surface layers chock full with to red herrings for the grocery line Swifties and the deeper layers of Taylor’s truth. They both exist in the art, swirled together.
Tumblr media
But here is where things start to feel different. We cut to True Taylor and Taylor Swift™️ away from all those faceless people - they are alone in the middle of a road. That in itself is ridiculously symbolic of being on the way to somewhere (maybe brighter days). But there’s more because they are dressed identically, laying inside Taylor’s head that is made up of their art. This scene is like bonking us on the head that these two people are one and the same.
Note: The silhouette here is from the Style video which also portrays Taylor’s inner self as a man.
Tumblr media
Taylor Swift™️ runs to True Taylor and they embrace in the middle of the road as pages of their art float around them. In the chaos, Taylor Swift™️ reaches out to True Taylor.
Maybe this scene is suggesting the public version of Taylor is ready to embrace her real self.
Tumblr media
Then we see Taylor Swift™️ strapped to a table, wild hair from dropping the hairpins we saw in the opening scene. The drugs aren’t working, it must be time to escalate to shock therapy. The men around her gather and there is literally a sign in the background that says “Master Control”.
But one of the men in the room making decisions for the brand is actually True Taylor, who has been there all this time.
Enough is enough when True Taylor can’t take the pain and pulls the plug on the procedure, freeing public persona Taylor from torture.
Tumblr media
Next we see True Taylor, familiarly encased behind glass, on a phone call. Perhaps making plans while safe from the rain. Taylor Swift™️ is elevated on a pedestal, out in the storm, in her best dress FEARLESS! Credit to @rep-princess-witch who put the fearless connection together in another post.
I’ll say it again, that is the huge difference in this video compared to others. Here, Taylor Swift™️ is not an antagonist, she is ready to brave the storm.
Tumblr media
So what does she do? She’s back in the workspace burning all the files. It’s not without emotion but it’s necessary. We then see a stoic Taylor Swift™️ with no regrets.
Tumblr media
After burning the files she’s back in the observation room. It’s time to fight back against the voyeurs and she does so by smashing the glass between her and them. She regains her agency by squashing their ability to hide. Shes deserting her past life.
Note: We don’t see True Taylor back inside. This fight is specifically for Taylor’s public persona.
Tumblr media
In the closing seen, we see True Taylor leave shelter, step outside into the storm, and reach for Taylor Swift™️. The person and the public persona are weathering the storm hand in hand.

Webzine submissions open for writing!
Tumblr media
Dear writers on tumblr, pour yourself a drink on the house. We've been asking for editors for our webzine in the last few weeks (you can still sign up here). We are focusing on going into different worlds. Now, we can announce that we are accepting writing submissions for it!
Who can submit writing?
All writers can submit writing to our zine, whether you have already published other works. Or have previously shared other writing pieces on [tumblr] or Archive of our own (or similar platforms). Our editors will pick their favourite pieces for each category based on different criteria, the most important thing is how well the pieces fit our theme Portal to Another World.
What kind of writing can I submit?
We are open to any form of writing! You can submit any form of writing from poetry, prose, flash fiction, a short story, song lyrics or even a non-fiction essay. As long as it fits the theme and is unpublished. Our theme is Portal to Another World. Unpublished in this case means it isn't published in print or online. You can't submit excerpts from your WIPs when they can't be understood outside the context of your WIP.
Will you compensate me?
As much as we would love to pay all contributors, we don't have the funds. We discussed this on our server and decided we want our zine accessible to all readers. Understand this is a passion project, so you will not be compensated for your writing. The finished zine will be shared as a free PDF download with a pay-what-you-want option on our KoFi. The little money we make from the zine will be used to fund future projects of writeblrcafé (e.g. a second zine) and boosts for our Discord server.
Where can I submit my writing?
Just fill in the form below! You can submit your writing as a PDF file. The word limit for prose is 2500 words. The limit for poetry is 50 verses. You can only submit one piece of writing. If your piece of writing is longer, feel free to submit it. We will decide on a case-to-case basis. We hope many of you take this chance to collaborate on our webzine, which will be compiled in a compelling design.
Extended submissions deadline: 15th July
Submissions for artwork will open soon!
Please reblog this post to spread the word in the writing community!

[ HOWDY Y’ALL! WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM FOR A FUN BROADCAST!
If you haven’t noticed, it’s pride month! That means we’re legally allowed to be gay for an entire month before we have to disappear into our burrows once more! To celebrate the occasion, I decided to do a fun little pride post! ]
Tumblr media
[ I’ve gathered all the little fuckers in The Void to poke and prod at them like zoo animals. In other words, I figure they all have some neat identities and wouldn’t mind being interrogated in honor of pride month. I’ll go ahead and turn it over to them, but I’ll say now, no matter how much they kick and scream, I am definitely NOT holding them at gunpoint! This workspace is… definitely OSHA approved. Don’t let them tell you otherwise. Have attem! ]
Tumblr media
> This is fucking stupid. Stop waving that gun at me. I’m talking.
> My identity isn’t anything special. I’m just some guy who decided he was a guy way later than everyone else did. I don’t really give a damn what pronouns people use on me because usually they just end up avoiding me at all costs or scampering away like frightened animals.
> I’m bisexual, is that anything? But, like, only bisexual in a sexual way. I could not fucking fathom living a long prosperous life with anyone. How the hell are you supposed to enjoy someone for that long? Getting married seems like a scam. I bet it is. I bet it’s like the invention of Valentine’s Day for greeting card companies. You’re not actually supposed to be in love with someone for that long, it just doesn’t seem possible.
> … My marriage with Dave does not count, that wasn’t an officiated wedding. I’m fairly certain he fished those rings out of a water fountain and pawned his dress off a hooker. I do vividly recall dumpster diving for my tuxedo.
Tumblr media
> Uhhhhhh wuh? Hmmmm, I’onno what the hell I am, Old Sport! Fuck!
> Shit, I guess I like everyone. A hole’s a hole. Why the fuck would I discriminate? I think I got a preference for men though! They’re so fuckin’ easy to romance! Unless they’re the likes of Sportsy, then it’s the hardest goddamn thing you’ll ever seduce. He gets real gay when he’s on acid, but then again, I get real gay on cocaine. Man, our wedding was immaculate. Imma tell our kids about it one day!
> Likewise, I’ll be any gender you fuckin’ want me to be. I got like, pocket gender, I can just whip it out on request. Want me to be a dude? Fuck yeah, alright. Want me to be a pretty lady? No goddamn problem at all! I can be both at the same time or one more than the other— who gives a shit? I’m just havin’ fun.
Tumblr media
> Good fucking lord, really? That shotgun does not scare me, you orange fool—
> … I have a complicated identity. As any other living organism does.
> I have found that over the years I do not experience sexual attraction and that I experience little to no romantic attraction. I only recall feeling romantically attracted to one person in my entire life. I doubt it will happen again. > And it may seem, uhm... Embarrassing, but I do deviate from your traditional "man's man". In laymen's terms, I do not feel particularly drawn to being male. I am very certain I was born with the intention of being a man, but my mind has refused to accept it. I am not sure why. Instead of feeling like a proper bloke, I feel rather empty. If I could have it my way, I would be some... human silhouette rather than a full fledged man. I do not know. This is idiotic. > I cringe every time someone addresses me in a masculine way. I wish I could simply have no pronouns. I can deal with them because I am indeed a grown ass... person, but I just wish it were not so. Whatever. I am done complaining.
Tumblr media
> Oh! That’s very simple, this is really easy.
> I literally don’t have anything going for me at all.
> What with the entire fabric of time being on my shoulders and all, I don’t even think about gender or romance much. I do love being a girl! It’s one of the things I miss most about being alive, actually. Pretty dresses, playing with makeup in the bathroom, trying to curl my hair without burning my scalp— I mean, it sounds horrendous sometimes, but you can’t beat it. Feeling alive and content in your own skin. Just one of those precious things that spawned from the chance of life.
Tumblr media
> … Uhm, Uhhh… Men.
> Yeah. I Like Them. I Think… Yes, I Could Probably Date A Man Or Two. I Don’t Know, Employee, Why Did You Pull Me Out Here? You Know I Have Copious Paperwork To Do! Some @$!# $#*@ Kid Just Fell Into The Ball Pit And Got Mauled Jaws-Style And His Parents Are Really Grilling Us For It. Dumb&@#*s, It’s Not My Fault Their Kid Heeded The Call Of The Sirens. I Swear, This Job Is Going To Kill Me Or Force My Hand Into Becoming The Next Purple Guy—
Tumblr media
> extremely in love with my wife and my gender!
> it was actually very cute how we met, employee. have i ever told you? heh heh, we met in highschool. she was on the football team and i was a cheerleader, can you believe that? oh, i was head over heels for her instantly. she was strong, she was quick thinking, she was so hecking beautiful, employee… i never got to tell her how i felt while we were in highschool, but we were good friends. very good friends. come a few years later, some old buddies of ours want to have a get together and dish it out like old times… go vandalize and drive off into the sunset in the back of a pickup truck sipping on horrendously cheap beer and laughing off our university work or our jobs. when i get to our spot, though, i see her. i’d recently wised up to my gender, y’know, had my hair cut and fresh scars on my chest, so suffice to say i looked nothing like i did when i cheered for her during football season. she’d done the same, employee— she grew out her hair to the middle of her back in such beautiful dark curls, her bangs tied back so every inch of her perfect face could glimmer underneath the neon lights of the derelict bowling alley we’d found ourselves in. she looked at me, and i sensed instant recognition. she smiled through her bright red lipgloss and rushed up to me, wrapping me up in a hug, and i swear, she hadn’t lost any of those muscles— almost broke my ribs!
> the rest of the night, we were so… comfortable together. sure, during highschool we were close, but without saying a single word about what happened to us between then and now, we understood, and employee— i think it brought us closer. it was around three in the morning while we sat around a bonfire with the rest of our buddies when she layed her head on my shoulder and i felt an unfathomable warmth. i knew i wanted her for the rest of my life.
> … i just love her so much, employee.
Tumblr media
> oh ok
> its rlly whatever. any pronouns any gender anybody who wants me. who cares
> oh i do have a preference for girls. theyre pretty. if you disagree u are not blessed enough to be loved by gods best creation and ur pissed about it. i can tell
> what if i was actually catholic would that be fucked up or what
Tumblr media
> …
> … I cannot… physically stress how abhorrent sexuality is to me. What… What an utterly damning notion. Someone’s greedy hands cursing you and plaguing your with their own dirty human desires. How disrespectful. How… invasive. Why on Earth would it be my responsibility to supply someone with something to love? Am I really subject to whatever the hell people think of me? Whether they “love” me or perceive me as some… some man, some object of attraction? Disgusting.
> If I could shed every trace of a sex or gender from my loathed corpse, I would. Often times I lay awake at night and consider skinning myself for the hell of it. I’ve related this to David and he said I sounded “fuckin’ insane”. Stupid bastard. I want to be a skeleton. I wanna be a fucking skeleton! Pretty and thin and not alive whatsoever! God damn this accursed body and its… rancid flesh and unidentifiable mystery goop. Ugh. Ugh!!!! God, the biggest blight on my “life” was being cursed with gender!
> I was born as a female which was just laughably wrong, then I recall amending that and trying to become a man, but none of it worked. All of it sucked. All of it was wretched. The ideal form is a ghost or ghoul or skeletal figure. You can’t romance a ghost or ghoul or skeletal figure. Can’t have sex with that. Unless you’re really, really determined. I don’t think even David could be that serious about his sexuality.
> … I… Hope. Oh dear. Oh god, I really am unsafe from the horrors of this world. God, I wish that bear had taken me out before I showed him to his grave.

a flight to paris
(remus lupin x reader)
summary: you and remus have been in an established relationship for years but one day you received an unexpected break up call from him.
contents: she/her pronouns, modern!au, angst (?), break up, inspired by a barbie movie, my horrible english, i wrote this out of boredom, oh and this is a multipart :)
  . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
on most days you enjoy your summer holiday. you have a part time job in which you worked for a magazine, having your own personal workspace in the office headquarters and all.
your days are mostly surrounded by the latest style, magazine covers, hollywood gossip, and beautiful photoshoots of women. it was fun, really. that is if mr. wellins wasn't your boss.
he's a walking patriarchal figure. hate is not enough to describe your feelings towards that man.
"i don't think that's a good idea to put in there," you spoke during one of the meetings.
"what do you mean? it's a good one, everybody will be intrigued!" he scoffed.
you shifted uncomfortably in your seat, glancing at the others but they just gave you a warning look. no one dared to go against mr. wellins. "it just doesn't feel right y'know- to put that in there considering it's just an allegation and not confirmed?"
"but we focus on marketing here! who will pay your wage if it weren't for these nosy people who read and buy our magazines? we have to find a way to get our sales higher!" he said sternly, glaring at you with cold eyes.
"look here, if you put that article, surely our reputation will be stained. you don't want that to happen do you? we just need to find something else- something more positive and harmless but still eye catching. like the new box office movie that everyone has been talking about lately. it doesn't harm anyone, in fact it's supporting them. what do you think?"
every one of your co-workers nodded in agreement, waiting for the boss to reply.
he looked bored. "you know that flapping thing you just did with your mouth?"
"you mean- expressing my opinion on what's better for the sake of your company?"
"yeah that," he rolled his eyes. "stop doing that."
"i think y/n's right, makes me wish she were the boss," one of your co-workers mumbled under her breath.
he looked sharply at the girl, "i can easily fire you."
"oh no no, i feel like we just- need to discuss about this more you know?" you defended.
"oh get off this place. end of discussion!"
"we can talk like in the coffee shop, or the commissary-"
"not me getting off, you getting off. get out you're fired!" he slammed his fist.
"wha- what? fired?" you said breathlessly, eyes widen in shock.
you got to your car, speeding to get home and just curl up in the arms of your boyfriend- remus lupin. you needed him. his constant whispering of sweet nothings, his warm embrace, his smile that can rip away all negativity.
just like magic, your phone started ringing with remus in the other line. screen lighting up, his pretty face on the screen. you smiled, so big and decided to stop at one of the parking lots nearby.
"hello?" you heard the sweet voice of remus lupin.
"oh rem! i'm so glad you called!" you exclaimed, heart warming at his comforting voice.
"things aren't right with us and you know it. they haven't been for a while," he said. his ever-lovely voice that makes you feel safe was nowhere to be heard. your heart dropped, chest hurting all of a sudden.
"what?" you choked on the verge of sobbing. "remus come on."
"i'm breaking up with you... right now." he said it like you don't matter to him at all. you clenched your phone, eyes already hurting from the incoming tears.
"you're not... are you serious? what are you saying?" you thought your day couldn't get worse, but the universe said otherwise.
"it's over. and if you're smart, you'll forget i exist."
and just like that, the line disconnected. you couldn't stop the tears from falling out of your eyes. not only have you lost your job, you also have lost your remus.
you never thought he would ever break up with you. especially since you both were in a strong relationship of four years. no matter what problems appeared on the surface, they always got resolved.
wiping your tears away, you tried to drive safely to lily's house. your best friend. you needed someone to talk to. someone to pour your heart out.
"i lost my job and he broke up with me," you said in shame when she opened the door to see you with red rimmed eyes.
"he broke up with you because you lost your job?" lily gasped.
"no... separately," you sobbed. then you told her the whole story of how you've had lost your job and how he broke up with you on the phone in your car just then.
"what kind of guy does that!" lily said in disbelief. it's so not remus to break up with you like that. knowing how much he loves you since forever ago. you two are perfect for each other. nothing could ever compare to the bond you both had.
"i guess a guy with no real emotions," you huffed, reaching for lily's tissue.
lily suggested for you to call remus again, 'cause no way is someone like him said something like that to you. there was no response though, he's not answering.
"maybe you misunderstood. what did he actually say?" lily asked once more.
"he said that it was over, and if i were smart i'd forget he ever existed," his words ringing in your ears.
"does he speak another language where it means 'i love you'," lily tried, you shook your head.
"that's it," she picked up your phone. "i'm blocking him from your cell, e-mail, everything! you do not break up with anyone like that! when i'm done, we're gonna go somewhere that you love. a place where you feel happy and good about yourself."
"i wanna go far away," you mumbled.
"that's right, you should go far away and clear your head! forget about them. men are getting harder to like these days," lily agreed, snapping her fingers.
"i'll go far away... like aunt milicent's!" you said.
"aunt millicents?" lily asked.
"yeah she's a designer in paris. has a fashion house and everything. i always loved being there. tons of people, energy, fabrics, and dresses... and my aunt in the middle of it all! oh how i want to be like her when i grow up. that's it i'm going there!"
"super fun!" lily exclaimed, truly happy for you. "when are you going?"
"right now! i can spend the last weeks of summer vacation with her," you managed to crack a smile, "i don't need remus. what i need is to book a flight to paris."
"remmy, you can't help me with our summer project if you're on the phone all the time," jessica said, snatching remus' phone out of his hand.
"i just don't get it, i can't get through y/n at all!" remus said in exasperation, brows furrowing in confusion and worry clouding up his head.
"i'm sure she's fine," jessica said, fluttering her lashes.
remus was unconvinced, he couldn't focus the whole time. "it has been since yesterday."
"y/n is a busy person. she'll call when she gets the chance... in the meantime...," she jerked her head towards the script.
"do we have to tape that again... i'm not an actor, i probably sounded stupid," remus scoffed.
"you sounded beautiful," she said, smiling flirtatiously at him.
remus was too fogged up on the thought of you to notice her behaviour. you never ignore him like this. no matter how busy your lives were, you two always made time for each other.
"lils look!" marlene gasped, pointing at remus and jessica sitting together on the table across the room.
"oh no. don't tell me that boy dumped y/n for jessica," lily said in annoyance and disbelief.
the two of them walked over, crossing their arms. "are you kidding?" lily said coldly, shooting daggers at remus.
"lily, marlene! where's y/n?" remus asked, sitting up from his chair. he didn't know why they looked upset.
"why do you want to know?" marlene questioned.
"i can't reach her! i've called, i've texted, i've emailed. nothing worked. is she okay?" remus said desperately.
"y/n's fine. she wants nothing to do with the twat who dumped her over the phone!" lily scolded.
"wha- huh- dumped her?" remus asked in shock. he would never dump you. you're everything to him. "i would never do that, c'mon you guys know how much she means to me!"
"you know what uhh i actually need to run, see you," jessica said, slipping away from the table. nobody paid attention to her though.
"don't play dumb! she told us what you said 'it's over and if you're smart you'll forget i exist'."
"wait what?" remus exclaimed, eyes travelling towards jessica who was chuckling guiltily. "that line... a part of the script i read yesterday. don't say you recorded it and play it back to y/n," he said, eyes closing painfully.
"i'd be happy to tell you that," jessica said, batting her lashes. oh what a nerve. "it was a joke. i never thought she'd actually believed it. she must have serious doubts about the relationship."
remus ignored her, turning towards lily and marlene. "where's y/n? i need to see her now," he said, heart racing at the thought of you.
"uh- she's kind of..." lily slowly replied, eyeing marlene, urging her to finish the sentence.
"in paris."
"paris? paris, france? since when was she going to paris?" remus was panicking. he knew he messed up and he's willing to make it right again.
"uh a long story..."
"what should i do? i need to talk to her as soon as possible," he scrunched his hair, brows knitting.
"y/n went through a lot yesterday... you know what you can do to make her feel better? a grand romantic gesture! don't just call her. go book yourself a flight to paris, show up to her aunt milicent's doorstep, and prove how much you love her!" lily said.
"she'll love it!" marlene agreed.
"i'm on it," he opened his phone to search for a plane ticket. "i'll book the next flight out of london."

hey so can I get a scenario with rise donnie’s s/o coming up to him and invited him to a restaurant in the hidden city where it has couples dancing? Entices him with his favourite music that’s gonna be playing and massive puppy eyes?
Tumblr media
late nights, flashing lights
rise Donnie x gn reader
“Come on, it’s the weekend! Why not do something special?”
Donnie flipped up his goggles in response to your question and set down his welding gun, sparks ceasing to fly at his confusion. “I haven’t the slightest notion on what the day of the week has to do with my choice of activities.”
“Our choice of activities - we’re hanging out right now, so it’s collective,” you corrected.
“Fine - our choice of activities. Sitting and working and engaging in riveting discussions is all we do on other nights, so what makes this one any different?”
You paused. All week, you had been planning a surprise for him - a trip to a quaint little disco in the Hidden City you’d heard about from April. She’d sent you some pictures from when she’d gone with Sunita and Casey, and then the idea took root.
But it was easier said than done.
Planning to surprise your turtle was difficult primarily for two reasons: the snoop always found out about it in advance (which you’d avoided narrowly this time by not mentioning anything about any plans tonight) and, the most difficult part, trying to get him to choose to go out of the lair, the step you found yourself currently stuck on. Still, you were going to try.
“I don’t know,” you replied coolly, “maybe the fact that it’s supposed to be the end of the week, time to relax or go out or something?”
“Out?”
“Yes. Out. With me. Instead of holing yourself up in the lab or whatever,” you mumbled.
“Out where? Not a lot of Homo sapien-mutant-accepting entertainment establishments come to mind, and, much as I love pretending not to be myself,” he flicked his goggles back down and turned back to his workspace.“I don’t know if I’m really in the mood for it right now.”
“Well.” You didn’t want to say that you knew of one in particular because that sort of spoiled the surprise element of the night. Hesitantly, you suggested, “we can try to look for one?”
He sucked in a breath through his teeth, hand stopping just shy of picking up his welding tool once more. “I don’t know…”
“Could we please just give it a shot?” Hook.
You nudged his arm, mustering up the warmest look you had. Line. “Any time you want to come back or feel uncomfortable, we’re headed right back here.”
Donnie glanced back over to you, and you could discern the exact moment he caved. Sinker. “Sure.”
The next half hour consisted of throwing on sweatshirts, linking arms and whipping out of the lair straight toward one of the many entrances to the Hidden City.
As you wandered through portals, down ramps and bystreets, the turtle you were practically dragging along looked at you exceedingly more quizzically.
“Do you know where you’re going?” Donnie eventually muttered.
“What?” you asked incredulously, quite unconvincingly. “No, of course not. Just meandering randomly. What gave you that impression?”
“Oh, nothing - just the fact that you’re walking with assertion in a seemingly predetermined path.”
A subtle smirk worked its way onto your face. “Maybe.”
He scowled, lighthearted. “Oh, sweet Galileo- why mustn’t you ask me out with you straightforwardly when you already have plans?”
You pulled on his sleeve to direct you two left before pushing the entrance of your location open for him. “Because then I wouldn’t get to see the look on your face when I take you places like this.”
As soon as he stepped foot in the building, you saw the glow in his eyes, his radiant beam, and they were far more beautiful than the already gorgeous venue.
The pictures you’d seen of it looked good, but seeing it in person was even better; with the amber lights and colorful tiled-dance floor and overhead disco ball, the place looked like it was ripped straight out of the 80’s.
“It’s a discotheque, baby!” you grinned, throwing an arm back around his shoulder. “Last one like this within, like, a thousand mile radius.”
“Woah!” Somehow his eyes lit up even more when he looked back at you. It was stunning. “How have I not heard of this place?”
“I mean, that checks out. April recommended it, and apparently it took Sunita forever to find somewhere with a more traditional disco - it only plays 70’s and 80’s hits. You’re welcome.”
Donnie was still stupefied. “Yeah, yeah, whatever you say.”
“I heard they’ve got some tables over there for dining, and that the drinks from there-”
Your hand was gently snatched from the air where it was pointing at a countertop across the room. You looked down at the tridactyl hand holding it, then up its owner.
The turtle grinned, finally pulled from his daze and emphatically lucid. The look in his eyes bore a striking resemblance to the exact one you’d used to get him to agree to come here. “We can get into the dives and dining and whatnot later - for right now, care to dance?”
“I mean, I have a reservation for-”
Another hand on your waist was all it took to shut you up, and slowly walking backwards landed the both of you on floor, and pulling you closer resulted in the both of you grinning and spinning and dancing.
As a myriad of killer songs blasted from the front of the room, you found yourself inundated with a seeping, saccharine satisfaction, partially derived from doing the merengue and cha-cha and some deviant of the Cabbage Patch along with many more improvisations, but mostly from the sheer elation exuded by your dance partner.
Even as you two continued to bounce to Whitney or sway to Prince, his focus stayed on you, eyes locked, with scarcely a moment without a hand or arm making contact with you.
Somehow, just that affectionate attention, that carefree yet caring energy made the efforts of getting him into a social setting and keeping a surprise from the nosiest person in the world abundantly more than worth it.

Dear pile one, I am absolutely thrilled to express my utter joy and excitement at the mere thought of being in your presence. It feels like an exhilarating adventure filled with endless possibilities. When I am with you, time seems to stand still as we embark on an enchanting journey of love and inspiration. Your warmth and comfort embrace me like a cozy blanket, providing solace to my weary soul. Every moment spent together is cherished, as we create unforgettable memories and share the deepest of conversations. Your companionship brings out the best version of myself, igniting a flame within that cannot be extinguished. Oh "Dear Pile Two, You Complete Me" - how you fill my life with joy and clutter! As I gaze upon your haphazardly stacked papers, misplaced knick-knacks, and random odds and ends, I can't help but feel an inexplicable sense of fulfillment. You are like the missing puzzle piece to my organized chaos. Who needs a meticulously tidy workspace when they can have the delightful chaos of a well-curated pile? From bills that need paying (eventually) to notes scribbled on Post-it's, you hold the irreplaceable treasures of my forgetful mind. Sure, some may scoff at your seemingly disorderly nature, but little do they know the hidden wisdom within your disarray. So here's to you, oh magnificent dear pile two - although your tidiness might be questionable, your charm is unmatched.

Dear pile 3, it's only you and me against the world. As I stand here, overlooking the vastness of our existence, I can't help but feel the weight of the universe pressing down upon us. It is in this moment that I realize the magnitude of our relationship, for within your embrace lies all that we hold dear. The world may attempt to tear us apart, but we shall prevail. Our bond is forged through the trials and tribulations we have faced together; a stronghold against adversity. As the tempest rages around us, threatening to consume all that we hold sacred, know that I am steadfast by your side. Our unity imbues me with an unwavering strength; no longer alone in this tumultuous journey through life's torrential storms. Together, pile 3, we defy fate and conquer uncertainty as champions of love and resilience.

Dear Pile 4, you are my perfect person. The mere thought of your existence fills me with an indescribable mix of joy and longing. Every fiber of my being yearns for your touch, for the sound of your voice whispering sweet nothings into my ear. In this chaotic world, you are the anchor that keeps me grounded, the lighthouse that guides me through stormy waters. Your presence brings clarity to my thoughts and purpose to my existence. From the deepest depths of my soul, I believe that we were destined to be together - two halves of a whole seeking solace in each other's arms. Yet, fate continues to test our resolve, placing seemingly insurmountable obstacles in our path. But fear not, for I shall endure any hardship and surmount every challenge to be by your side. For you, dear Pile 4, are worthy of every sacrifice and every drop of blood spilled in this epic battle against destiny itself.

help a student write a dumb rvb research paper? pretty please?? for funsies???
This is exactly what it sounds like.
My current final of the year for my language composition class is a massive synthesis + argumentative research paper on any topic of our choosing, and Roosterteeth + RVB has too much messy junk going on that I’m knee-deep invested in mentally at this point to pass up the opportunity to write about it.
And yknow, I see a ton of media analysis posts coming out of the fandom all the time and I’ve always loved seeing it and reading into it and sharing ideas and whatnot and this feels like my way of doing that too.
Essentially what I’m reaching out for is for you guys to help me crowdsource resources and share your ideas with me to include in my term paper*.
things that would be wizard cool of you to send me are:
any interviews or behind the scenes with the cast and creators you happen to know of
your own analysis or hot takes of the characters or the show as a whole
what the show has meant to you
any clips of old Roosterteeth expos
for the older fans, a rough idea of what the release timeline looked like for the episodes and what the buildup and fan reaction was for each one
any commentary or hot takes on how the fandom has changed since you joined/that you know of
what Roosterteeth did wrong (writing wise and irl)
what Roosterteeth did right (writing wise and irl)
tropes within the show you noticed whether originated by the show or not
tropes within the fandom, things like similar portrayals or bad/good takes on characters or face canons that span artists
literally anything you can give me, media, commentary, or opinion wise
(not to say I can’t find things on my own, I already have, but this is also about varying opinions and the general outlook of the fandom as a whole and measuring the broader impact of a show like RvB and it would be incredibly cool of you to help me out even with just crumbs of character opinions)
The idea is to get evidence together from clips, personal anecdotes, and opinions so I can present an accurate read on the fandom, especially when it comes to fan interpretation of RVB vs Roosterteeth’s intentions for the show (and behavior as a company) and explore what the show was supposed to be, what it literally is, how people see it, what its impact has been, and a general overview of the it’s legacy and lifespan, that sort of thing.
My thesis is most likely going to end up something in the ballpark of “How Roosterteeth exemplifies the Franchisation of Indie Media” or “Why RvB is one of the most complicated/misunderstood/divisive shows in modern media” or “How Fandoms interpret and recontextualize media”
I’m going to guess that I likely won’t be able to post the finished paper up online without a solid buffer window to avoid the two mortifying scenarios that are (a) being accused of creative plagiarism and (b) having to tell my instructor that the tumblr account with a 100% match to my course final is, in fact, my tumblr account, are two things I desperately want to avoid.
However if I can, simply for the sake of contributing to the fandom and creating something for us to all contribute to and discuss and crediting various peoples’ help and input would be ideal and, if at all possible, that would be the end goal.
so yeah. if you’re up for it I’d love for you to dm me your thoughts or (more conveniently for the both of us) fill out this Google form down here!
*im not gonna, like, repost your detailed character analysis as my own or something. I’m just trying to find some good quotes, general opinions, and ideas from the fandom so that I can accurately represent them and do our little corner of the internet Justice. And also because the audience of a work is a massive factor in media analysis lmfao. and also to create a community sourced Fun Thing™️ we can all look at and bite the corners off of instead of watching Roosterteeth crash and burn in the backgroun

WELCOME HOME THEORIES AND ANALYSIS! FRIDAY THE 13th EDITION!
HUH?? A surprise Welcome Home Update???
WITH LORE AND SECRETS?!?!?!
Ohohohoho! You know yours truly loves lore! And oh boy... Theres a lot to unpack here.... So buckle your seatbelts folks! I might've discovered something BIG
WARNING! THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE HALLOWEEN UPDATE! OH AND THIS IS GONNA BE VERY VERY LONG!
Ok, first things first, THE THEORY
I might've figured out who the main antagonist could be, and it's not Wally or Home. In fact, it has been staring at us the entire time, we've just never realized it.
Tumblr media
I think the main villain of Welcome Home could be the spooky swirly void living inside of Home.
"WHAT?!?! This early on in story??" I hear you say! "This couldn't be possible!"
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE DEAR VIEWER! And truth be told, there could be multiple antagonists in Welcome Home, but all evidence points to this swirly guy being the source of everything wrong thats happening. Also, from now on, I'll be calling it the Entity. (Spooky swirly man sounds so silly!)
EVIDENCE 1: It makes people sick.
It seems like the Entity emits some kind of black "ink" that makes people sick once you touch it. It also seems like the WHRT knows about this too! Going into great lengths to order everyone to wear gloves.
Tumblr media
Writing on sticky note atop vinyl glove box reads: Put on gloves before handling ANY art. Call me if we run out!
Not to mention that think ink also seems to effect anyone psychologically, making them want to discover more about Welcome Home, even if it harms their own health.
In the ABOUT US page:
When I unwrapped the first letter, I felt it. I heard it. Open. Open. Open. I want it out. I’m going to get it out.
In the STAFF ONLY page:
Tumblr media
Everything is so disgusting to touch. Sometimes the mail doesn't come for weeks. I want to rip into everything I have. My head feels so muddled too. Ever since I opened the envelope.
Tumblr media
I keep getting phone calls, now. Or at least, I assume that's what's happening. I keep hearing it ringing. All day, sometimes. I check my phone and there's no new messages. I thought maybe some of the site staff were pranking me, but I tore up the workspace and couldn't find another phone that might be ringing. All that was there were the toys for the exhibit, and obviously those couldn't be ringing. But I kept hearing it anyway. The phone ringing and ringing... ...I keep digging and digging. I've poured over every recovery the WHRP has given me access to, every inch of their website, and the things I find make less and less sense. If I didn't know better I'd say everyone was coming together to pull an elaborate prank on me. I can still hear the phone ringing now. I don't know how to answer the phone. I need to answer the phone.
The NEWS PAGE also mentions ringing! (This could be the same person who has been affected by the ringing)
So many guest signatures… So many of them are trying to communicate. What are you telling me for? Do you think I can answer? What are you trying to do to me? I’m closing that guest book, I’m not playing this game anymore. The ringing is enough.
And even affecting them physically as well!
NEWS PAGE
What is it, I hear you pleading! Clawing at your screens just as we have! Coughing, headaches, nausea- I know. I know. It will take a lot of cleaning, preparation, and polishing on our part, but it is a worthwhile labor of love.
Coughing, headaches, nausea.... The Restoration Team is growing sick, yet they are completely obsessed with restoring more evidence for Welcome Home.
They even know that they are growing sick, they wear gloves, they clean, they prepare, they polish the artwork over and over and warn anyone NOT to touch the ink, but it's not enough. They need to restore Welcome Home, even at the cost of their own health.
Heck, the entire page (and studio) is literally dowsed with black ink!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it seems to be growing too...
Tumblr media
Theres more stuff on the walls I keep hearing phones ring.
"More stuff" as if he's surprised, as if there were less ink on the walls than before. And he keeps hearing phones ringing... Its growing...
Tumblr media
And it made its way into the real world....
EVIDENCE 2: SALLY'S HORROR STORY!
Ah yes! Some evidence from the Halloween Update! This time, from Sally Starlet’s Macabre Menagerie of Monstrous Mischief Making! Specifically, I want to analyze the "noticeable gap" in the audio, the only part where the WHRT did NOT transcript. (This was written by yours truly btw!)
SALLY: What?! No, no, and no! …It is because this town is rumored to have visitors at night… Something from deep within the forest, far beyond the hills and mountains… No one knows what it wants or where it’s going, just that it is persistent… Just that it arrives here. So many stories have risen about their origins… But I know what it is searching for. It is looking for neighbors who have stayed past the daytime, to gobble them up whole. That is why so few live here. It moved through the streets at night, but it doesn't break into homes. However, on rare instances, it will find itself with an appetite left…. unsatisfied by its aimless wandering. Even the occasional unfortunate insect that has crossed its path is not enough… Those who have lived through the night say it isn't quiet about it either. They always say you can hear when it gets closer to you. Do you know what sound it makes? I hear it. Every. Night. You can hear it too, if you listen. Especially if you wait next to your window. First, theres rustling in the bushes. Then, A scratching on the pavement and the walls as it crawls up. Finally, if you're quiet, you can hear its guttural sound…
Now, I know what you're asking. Why even bring up this little story at all? What does this story have to do with the Entity?
Context, my dear viewer. If you listen closely, the audio is too clear. No static, no nothing. This segment is also the only part where it didn't get transcripted because it was "inaudible". Which is strange, because you and me and you and that guy and me can hear it just fine! And THAT is why it got me theory senses tingling.
Plus, the story is about a monster too! Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
So let's analyze!
"…It is because this town is rumored to have visitors at night… Something from deep within the forest, far beyond the hills and mountains… No one knows what it wants or where it’s going, just that it is persistent… Just that it arrives here."
This could be talking about the Entity. We don't know what exactly the Entity wants, just that it looks like it's determined to reach a goal that we don't know much about.
"It is looking for neighbors who have stayed past the daytime, to gobble them up whole. That is why so few live here."
It feels like this is talking about the portal-like properties the Entity has. "Gobbling" up neighbors whole and sending them to another dimension, ours.
Sally also states "That is why so few live here", which makes me question how many neighbors used to live here before. Perhaps Julie's siblings, Howdy's family, Barnaby's mom? Were they sent to another dimension? Where are they now????
Not only that, but Sally makes it clear that it goes after neighbors at nighttime. And what time does Welcome Home usually update? 7 PM (*Now, this time could be different because of timezones, but the updates usually happen during the night)
"It moved through the streets at night, but it doesn't break into homes. However, on rare instances, it will find itself with an appetite left…. unsatisfied by its aimless wandering..."
"First, theres rustling in the bushes. Then, A scratching on the pavement and the walls as it crawls up. Finally, if you're quiet, you can hear its guttural sound…"
I think Sally is giving us an EXACT description on how the Entity managed to break into Home.
Tumblr media
1st, theres rustling in the bushes. Home does have bushes surrounding him.
Then, a scratching on the pavement and walls as it crawls up. The Entity could've broken into Home by either climbing through the window or through the roof.
Finally, a guttural sound. Now... where did I hear a guttural sound in Welcome Home before.... Oh yeah! Wally. <- Click this handy-dandy clip and you can hear something quite monstrous right below Wally's voice!
"Wait a minute.... Did you say Wally has a guttural voice???"
I did, dear reader. I did.... Which brings me to my next point:
EVIDENCE 3: POSSESSION AND PUPPETEERING!
Throughout our inspection of the Welcome Home website, we've seen countless times of Wally becoming more and more distressed as each update comes out.
But we've also seen a lot of inconsistencies regarding our lil' Darling! In fact, I even compiled these into a theory in which there could be 2 people hacking into the website!
And while that I still do believe there are more than 2 people hacking into the website... I don't think the Question Answerer is the one doodling. He's still hacking onto the website, but unlike Wally, he writes it out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last piece of evidence just proves its the same guy writing this! The Question Answerer!
I want to rip into everything I have. My head feels so muddled too. Ever since I opened the envelope. (see above)
Ok but if the Question Answerer isn't the other guy doodling... then who is making all of the inconsistent doodles??
Why, the ENTITY!
Not only are the doodles inconsistent, but even the sound of Wally's voice sound... quite off if you compare enough audios.
For example! Compare the interview audio with the newest Happy Haunting audio, do you notice anything peculiar about Wally's voice? Especially in the Happy Haunting audio? (If you have trouble finding it, compare these few timestamps below)
4:08
4:51
8:45
13:39-15:29
It sounds... off. Robotic even! It's slow, and the articulation is way different from the interview audio. In the interview audio, you can hear how happy Wally sounds! Even in this audio (and this one too), you can hear Wally growing increasingly frustrated. Yes, its still monotone, but you could hear emotion!
But the Happy Haunting audio, it's neutral. Yes, it IS monotone, but it feels like someone doing an impersonation of Wally rather than Wally actually speaking himself. In fact, the audio reminds me of the phone audio right here. It has the same pauses and neutral tone, save for the very audible growl right underneath Wally's voice.
But speaking of the phone audio.... Did you catch that?
...Do you know who I am? [The heart beat and ambience resume.] [Gasp.] Oh no. Well that’s not neighborly at all. We’ve never met before. But don’t worry. Even though you and I haven’t spoken before, I’ve seen you... Every time you have looked into my eyes. I want to know… What did you see? [Silence.] I hope you saw a friend, but I’m not sure you saw a name... Stand still. Let’s start over. Ring ring ring. Click. Hi, I’m Wally. I’m so happy to finally meet you, I think you’re the absolute most.
...That's strange, isn't it? We definitely HAVE met Wally, not formally, but we do know about him (this fandom is proof of that!) So how come Wally is saying that we haven't?
Especially when in another audio, he says that we DO 'know him'.
…Why won’t you answer me, neighbor. Why can’t I hear you. You know me. You do. Please open. Let me in.
Contradictory, isn't it? We can't both know Wally and NOT know Wally at the same time. That's impossible....
Unless the phone audio Wally isn't our Wally... its the Entity.
Technically, we DON'T know about the Entity. It's not a character in Welcome Home and the things that we do know about it are just mere theories and speculations. It is our 'first' formal meeting with it.
Then why did it introduce itself as Wally? WELL BECAUSE ITS POSSESSING HIM! It's trying to convince us that it is Wally, using his signature catchphrase and even saying 'I hope you saw a friend'. Besides, if you were a weird portal monster, I doubt you would introduce yourself as one if you wanted to trick someone.
And if this possession theory does turn out to be true, it does explain the major inconsistencies happening in the website! Such as the doodles!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hearts!
Tumblr media
THE HANDWRITING
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THATS NOT WALLY'S HANDWRITING! He writes in CAPITAL LETTERS and in RED (not all lowercase and in blue!).
WALLY CAN'T DRAW HEARTS SO WHO'S DRAWING EM???
AND BOTH OF THOSE BARNABY DRAWINGS SURE DO LOOK INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER. ALMOST AS IF SOMEONE WITH LITTLE DRAWING EXPERIENCE DID IT.
But if you still need a bit more proof to convince ya, here's some more!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
W a L L y: You won't write back Wally: You're looking for me. Silly. Silly.
I think W a L L y is our Wally! He's getting desperate, but he knows that we won't be able to write back. Wally on the other hand is the Entity, it knows that we are looking for the main big bad antagonist, and it knows. It even mocks us.
And I think we've seen evidence of these possessions before. Look at none other than the bug audios!
In every single one of these bug audios, we are in the perspective of Wally himself. But in these bug audios, Wally doesn't say anything at all. Rather, he sits unmoving, listening into the conversation whether he has been invited there or not!
Tumblr media
In this bug audio, Wally has been listening in on Sally and Howdy's conversation the entire time!
But thats not all! All of these bug audios are connected according to the conversation between Barnaby and Home! Which means that all of these bug audios are happening on the same day at a very short period of time, which is concerning on just how frequent Wally appears to be disassociating. Or if that's even Wally at all!
If that is the Entity controlling Wally, it feels like he's observing them, studying them. Perhaps that's why the audios always cut out whenever a neighbor says Wally's name, it snaps him out of that trance and reminds him that he is in fact the real Wally!
Which brings us to our latest bug audio (and by far the most worrying one), the Candy Spider! The Halloween Bug?? Idk it's this one <-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We've just gotten proof of Wally munching on an apple. This would've been fine and dandy in any other situation, but remember viewer! Context matters! Especially if we put into consideration that that is not Wally.
BARNABY: ‘Ey, how’s my little devil doin’ over ‘ere? You guardin’ my apple for me, pal? [There is a brief pause. What is he doing.] BARNABY: Oh— heh, I guess ya didn’t do a very good job at it. [Barnaby calls out to the room] Hey! Who took a bite outta my apple? I think I see some fang marks, Frank!
Yeah that SURE is definitely not worrying. Nope, none whatsoever!
Oh boy... I think that's everything. Well, not everything everything. I still don't think the Entity is the only bad guy, just the main one! The Playfellow Workshop is very suspicious, and while I do believe Wally and Home are most likely victims of everything that is going on, I don't think I should say that they are quite innocent yet.
Tumblr media
In the banner, they are the only two NOT separated by hearts! It seems to me that they are working together to give out more evidence to the WHRT.
And Marlo... another company that is VERY suspicious. What did their logo look like again?
Tumblr media
A house logo with an eye in the middle.... Why does that look so familiar?
Tumblr media
AH.
Well that's clearly not suspicious!

hi devon! love your work so much and also just rly want to take an edible with you and shoot the shit but my actual question is as an autistic person who was taught to orient around other peoples needs how can i re train that laser focus to kind of hone what i need/like/desire? i feel really lost and spend so much time thinking about what other people may like or want i have no idea what i want even at 29
oh my goodness, my entire next book on Autism is all for people like you! I believe that part of unmasking requires that we learn how to disengage from the opinions of others, widen our distress tolerance, get more acclimated to the possibility of change, learn how to initiate the activities we like more, and just generally get more in touch with our bodies and our desires. this is a lot of work but it's all in the realm of skills that can be practiced... which is why i'm currently trying to sell a book that is entirely research, examples, and exercises around these things. i will also be publishing lots of small tastes of this work pretty regularly on my substack in the next few months.
in the meantime, i would encourage you to start reallllly really small, by taking greater notice of what you don't like. and i mean really start out with miniscule declarations of negative feeling. "i dont like this song, can we change the channel on the radio?" "i dont want to eat at the olive garden actually" "im cold, can you turn up the heat or tell me where the blankets are?" "this bar is too loud, i'm going to have to leave." REALLY small stuff. even stuff of that scale probably feels TERRIFYING. start with these things, and ride out the initial discomfort or embarrassment that arises when stating a need or preference.
you'll notice that each of these "no's" is actually getting you closer to figuring out what you want as well. you're saying you dislike something, or that you are uncomfortable -- but you're also practicing articulating a thing that you actively do want, whether that's a blanket, a more comfortable place to spend the evening, or something better to listen to or to watch. it's hard to ask oneself massive existential questions about who you truly are and what you want out of life. but asking yourself if anything small in your immediate environment is uncomfortable is far easier.
the great thing about this method is that you can practice it all the time. any time you're in a new space or situation, just take a moment to ask yourself: what would i change? the goal is to always find something you could advocate or ask for. this flips the masked autistic instinct to never ask for anything until you're in absolute agony completely on its head. you are LOOKING for things to request, LOOKING for sources of mild discomfort to voice -- and youll get better and better at noticing what you like and what you dislike the more that you do this.
with time, you will be able to articulate far greater wants. i dont want to spend my weekend at my grandmother's house. i dont want to live in an apartment with someone who is constantly criticizing me. i want to live by the water. i want a job where i can control the temperature of my workspace at all times. i want dogs. i want to be able to go running in the morning. i want a bathtub. i want to paint and listen to music. i dont want to marry this person. and so on!
this is a massive oversimplification, but there you go. a little bump of the full supply that hopefully will hit bookshelves early 2025 if i play my cards right

Levi Ackerman x female reader
Warnings: none
The snow had melted and left behind strikingly green grass and blooming flowers. Spring had sprung for the Scouts and with the warmer weather came a new expedition into titan territory. You and Levi had a good thing going in your office, both working and chatting keeping you busy, so you knew what the squads had been up to. You felt your heart skip a beat at the mention of everyone you had been growing fond of venturing into dangerous territory. Of course that was literally the whole point of this military branch, but you still didn’t want to see any of your friends come back hurt or not at all. The days leading up to the expedition were quiet for you but you knew your workspace would most likely be overflowing the minute the soldiers come back to the castle, tears and rips galore in every article of clothing. You took the time of the calm before the storm to work on some of your own personal projects. You were finishing up a few blankets and some children’s clothes made of fabric scraps that you were going to hand out on your trip to the interior coming up. You worked diligently, your mind wandering.
Maybe Levi could accompany me? I know Erwin usually goes but it might do Levi some good away from work for a few days. Does he even believe in charity? I’ll just have to ask him next time I see him… after the expedition of course.
You were thrown out of your thoughts by a knock at your door.
“Come in!” you said.
Sasha entered your office, handing you her jacket with a sheepish smile. “Hi, Ms. L/n. I know this is last minute but my jacket has a tear on the sleeve and Captain Levi said he’d personally feed me to the titans if I wore it on our trip so…” She trailed off, her cheeks showing a hint of red.
You lightly laughed, taking the jacket from her and inspecting the damage. “Of course he’d say that. This rip is pretty small so I don’t know why he’s nitpicking it but rest assured I’ll have it ready for you in about an hour.”
You saw her light up and she jumped up and down. “Oh, thank you, thank you! You’re the best!”
“It’s no problem, really, it’s my job. Now, head back to training. I want to make sure I keep seeing your face around here.”
Sasha saluted and ran out of the room. You pushed aside your previous projects and got right to work. The hole was ridiculously easy to repair and barely took any time. As you laid it on your table for her to pick up, an idea struck you. Getting out your tried and true pocket pattern, you executed your plan.
“Ms. L/n? I’m here for my jacket!”
Sasha showed up a little over an hour later and you had finished your work in the perfect amount of time.
“Oh good! I added a little something extra for you as well. Wanna see?”
She nodded her head eagerly as you flipped the jacket inside out. “It’s nothing major but I thought you would get good use out of an inside pocket. I know you’re always, well, hoarding food, and this way you can place it somewhere nice instead of having it fall out of your hands. I hope you like it.”
You awaited her reaction with bated breath. She was quiet for a moment and you were nervous she didn’t like it. All of a sudden a loud squeal left her mouth and she wrapped her arms around you in a bone crushing hug.
“You are the most wonderful woman I’ve ever known! We don’t deserve you!”
Was she… crying? You didn’t have time to figure it out before she left, jacket in tow, presumably to the dining hall to test it out. You shook your head, a smile resting easily on your lips. You had such a soft spot for all these kids and it broke you that they had to fight so hard while losing so much. Their resolve amazed you and inspired you to stay positive and strong as well. If they didn’t falter in the face of danger and death, you wouldn’t falter in supporting them however you could.
A few days later, Levi came by your office. You weren’t expecting him since it was the night before he was leaving but you welcomed him in as always.
“I’m surprised you’re here since you’re leaving so early in the morning,” you said, taking a sip of the drink you brought in earlier.
Levi lingered by the door. “Do you want me to leave?”
“I said I was surprised, not upset. Please, sit wherever you’d like.” You gestured with a sweeping hand, the biscuit in your grip dropping crumbs onto the floor.
As he sat down near your work table, the captain looked at you with disgust. “It’s like you live in a pig sty, dumping crumbs like that. That’s disgusting.”
You feigned sadness, putting a hand over your heart. “To think I was going to offer you some! Instead you disrespect me.”
Walking over to the bed where you were, Levi took the piece that was laid in your outstretched palm. “If I collected all the pieces off the floor I would’ve had my own full one you filthy woman.”
You couldn’t contain the laughter that bubbled out of you. Levi’s eyes softened at your relaxed demeanor. The truth was, he was here because he was stressed to the max about the expedition. They always came with a degree of uncertainty and a little bit of fear, but this trip seemed like it was going to be different—worse. He didn’t know why he felt the trepidation that he did, he just knew he couldn’t bear getting stuck in his head for the next 10 hours. He already couldn’t sleep on normal nights and overthinking by himself was certainly not what he needed at the moment. Finding refuge in your room hadn’t failed him before and it seemed to be working in present time, too.
“What have you worked on lately?” he asked, eyes taking in the projects left out.
“Not a lot. Sasha came in because you chewed her out for her jacket.”
“I did,” he hummed softly, “since she was being careless and tore it on an ODM hook. Besides, nobody’s ever up here before we leave. She prevented you from becoming a hermit so you’re welcome.”
“My savior rescues me again. When am I ever going to repay the favor?”
“That’s stupid. You do plenty enough around here, stop acting like you don’t.”
You knew that was his way of giving a compliment so you said nothing, appreciating his words silently. It was quiet in your room, the slightest touch of tension running between you. It was strange because you wanted to say something, anything, before he left for what might be the last time ever, but you couldn’t find the words. What do you say to someone who continually puts their life on the line and doesn’t (more like can’t) think twice about it? You wished you could encourage him or send him off with sage advice, but nothing came to mind. “Please don’t die, I need you here for our comfortable talks and childish banter” seemed too desperate. “Good luck on your trip” was much too informal. You decided sitting in silence was probably preferable for the both of you, so that’s what you did. You didn’t know how long you two sat on your bed together, legs dangling over the edge and hands dangerously close to each other. When Levi shifted to pull his pocket watch out, his free hand slid next to your own, his cold skin melting into yours. Though the touch was small and completely accidental, it still left you reeling. The part that really had your heart thumping was the fact that he didn’t pull away. His eyes were fixed on the ticking clock while yours flitted between his ethereal side profile and the floor. When he put the timepiece away, you knew your time was up with him.
“It’s getting late. I won’t keep you up,” Levi said, but making no move to pull away from you yet.
“I’d stay up with you all night if you wanted me to. You know that.”
“I’d never want you to do that.”
“And I know that.” You took in a breath. “I can’t pretend to know how you’re feeling right now but I’m here for you. I believe in you and your squad. I won’t mention it anymore but I have faith that tomorrow is going to be okay.”
Levi found it impossible to look at you in fear of him taking one glance in your e/c eyes and canceling the whole damn expedition. Instead, he got up and ignored the situation, opting for the tried and true distraction of talking about your work.
“What’s these blankets for? And are these… baby clothes?” His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “One of you is enough, I can’t handle baby y/n’s running around here-”
You cut him off in your shock. “No, no, it’s not like that! They’re definitely not for me. I was going to wait to ask you until after you came back because I don’t want you to have anything else to think about.”
He looked at you expectantly, so you continued. “I’m taking the blankets and baby clothes to poverty stricken people in the interior. Erwin and I usually go and hand them out every few months but I was going to see if you wanted to come instead. If you’re into that kind of thing. No pressure of course, I know you’re super busy and it’s a silly thing I like to do but-”
“That’s the furthest thing from silly. We all have a duty to protect humanity and you’re doing it in the way you know how. Tell me when and I’ll be there.”
“Oh! Thank you! I’ll figure out the details and fill you in. Now you have to come back in decent shape because we’ve got things to do. You hear me?”
“Loud and clear, Sergeant brat,” Levi answered with a tiny smirk. “Now go to bed. You get irritating when you don’t sleep enough and I won’t be here to save everyone from the pain of dealing with you.”
You stuck you tongue out at him. “Goodnight Levi.”
“Night, y/n.”
When he left your room, you stood in the doorway and watched him walk down the hall to his own room, your heart aching for him. After feeling bliss from mere fingers grazing, you selfishly wanted to feel more of him. You didn’t want him to leave to help save humanity. You wanted to hold him in your arms and never let go. You settled for giving him a small wave as he looked back at you before entering his own doorway. He returned the wave and you both went to bed, sleep evading both parties.
The next morning was a blur. Running on a lack of sleep was tough but you absolutely weren’t going to miss the Survey Corp’s send off. You got ready in a hurry and ran down to the stables where preparations were finishing up. Erwin had allowed you to take a horse to follow them to the gate and you were grateful you didn’t have to stay behind. Petting your horse, you heard the clip clop of another one coming up behind you.
“You don’t look like shit so I’m assuming you slept alright?”
“You have such a way with words, Captain. Your charm is how you capture hearts, right?”
You and Levi loved teasing each other and you tried to make today as normal as possible, ignoring the fact that he was heading into titan territory in an hour. You fed your horse one last snack before climbing on, gathering with the rest of the Scouts. When you started your march toward the gate, Levi was still riding next to you in the back instead of in his position next to Hange.
“Is it okay for you to be back here? I don’t want you to screw up positioning because of me,” you argued, but he blew you off.
“Hange is too loud in the morning. Back here is fine.”
As per usual a silence fell between you. If you could overlook the fact that some of the people around you were about to die horrifically, it was a beautiful morning for a horse ride. You found yourself stealing glances at Levi, doing your best to memorize details of his face. He tried his best to keep his eyes forward but couldn’t resist the chance to admire you either. He wanted to burn the image of you, sleepy demeanor and hastily thrown on cape, sitting regally on a horse, into his mind because you radiated beauty. He hoped he wouldn’t die today but if he did, he would be content if you were the last thing he ever saw. The gate entered your view and the townspeople were cheering on the Survey Corps. You knew it was time to let Levi go.
“Levi,” you said quietly, but he miraculously heard it over the crowd. “Just… whatever you do, come back to me. Please.”
He nodded in understanding. You reached over the best you could while on your horse and placed a fist over his heart that was now beating so fast it was ready to explode. “See you soon, Captain,” you said, fighting back tears that threatened to fall.
“See you soon, y/n.”

💌 𝕮𝖍𝖎𝖎’𝖘 𝕸𝖆𝖓𝖎𝖋𝖊𝖘𝖙𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓 𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖗𝖞 | 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 #𝟎𝟒
Dear diary & manifestors,
I still continue to affirm whenever I can and things seem to be going pretty well. I do have my moments where I feel down but I try to affirm instead of spiraling like I used to do when I started my journey.
Mental diet is not easy, but even dieting when it comes to food is not easy as well. Still, you can make your journey be fun. I made a few new subliminal playlists on Youtube and I plan to download them to play them at my phone while I'm out.
My manifestations are going pretty well though. For example, I wanted a new desk chair that had adjustable manual reclining and leg support. I also wanted it to be pink and at first I thought "it's going to be difficult for something like that to exist, that mixes comfort and aesthetic". Still, I tried to visualize it.
In the end, because of the changes in my job, I got offered many things and one of them was to change things in my workspace and one of them was have a new desk chair. And funnily enough, my coordinator found a pink chair that fit everything I wanted and said if I wanted it as a joke at first. I said "yes" and in the end, my chair got ordered and it's coming by the end of next week (or sooner).
I also got offered a new project at work involving my SP. Which I am really happy with because I wanted to finally have a common project with him where we could focus on our careers together instead of working with others. It's not bad working with others, but sometimes the people we had to work with were either negative, played the victim if they didn't get away with stuff or even energy vampires. That wasn't good because that affected our workflow a lot.
Another manifestation I am possibly having soon and I want to share with you all is that the person that was giving me a lot of problems at work is possibly quitting soon. Around July, I was affirming that the people that were making my job impossible were gone. I really love my job but those people were really making others (including myself) uncomfortable. From there, everything has been going smoothly. One of them quit because they got a better offer in another company, another one was fired because their problematic behavior reached HR, another one still works with us but she got a project where she is alone and has no time to be a pain and the last one, like I said, they are either quitting or they might get fired for their problematic behavior as well.
The law is amazing and I cannot thank the law enough for everything that is happening around me. I am also having a blast being on Tumblr and sharing many things with you all. I also want to thank the people that messaged me thanking me about my post about "SP Manifestation and Narcissistic Trauma Bond". I really wanted to share that because sometimes we can fall into the trap of thinking we want to manifest an ex back but it's just really a trauma bond. We are complicated and sensitive creatures and sometimes our heart does these things to us and sometimes we try to manifest something we don't really want. Sometimes it's because of fear, sometimes it's nostalgia and sometimes it's even pride because we want to prove we can manifest anything. And WE CAN MANIFEST ANYTHING, still, do we really want that? I think we can manifest better things for us. That's what I did and you should too.
Trust me, it gets better even if it may sound scary at first. But once you taste the life you deserve, you just don't want to ever go back. That's why I want to share my experience from the good and the ugly when it comes to manifestation because even if it may not seem like a straight line at first, it always comes to you.

how do you find a group of people/friends/chosen family you can truly be yourself with? i had that in uni and then covid happened and now we're spread all over the world and never see each other again. i'm at home feeling lonely every day and like a misfit in my own (parents') house.. this is kind of a downer lol sorry about that! i just see you go for dinner at your friends' and you go on holidays together etc, and at 25 that feels like lightyears away, if not out of reach, from me :/
don't be sorry, always happy to be a safe place to vent.
I don't think I have the answer about making friends, I know I'm lucky to live near people I can hang with regularly. one thing I think helps is we all introduce each other to our "other" friends, so you get to know more and more friendly faces in your community. I'm always surprised by how often I run into people I know considering the size of the city.
it's funny you mentioned the holiday as well – there were ten of us, and I only knew one person when I arrived, over a week we all fell in collective love and it was so beautiful. maybe the answer is just being open hearted to the idea that anyone you meet could be someone you'll love?
you mentioned you have friends across the world – do you call regularly? could you organise to all meet up on a holiday or something? or could you make a schedule to visit each person?
I think the main thing I took from your message is you're living with your parents – totally get it, you have your reasons – but maybe the main contributing factor is you don't have independence and freedom to come and go or get out and about? maybe you're living somewhere rural? or maybe you're wfh too? workspaces, classes, activities and clubs are some of the main places you can meet people, maybe you're not getting enough of that where you're at. could you join up to something community focused based on your interests?
sending good thoughts :)

is there any possibility of you posting drafts again or do you not care about your followers anymore?
Hi, anon! My laptop is currently in four separate pieces on my workspace right now, waiting for a fresh screen to come in! I've posted about this situation extensively, as well as how it prevents me from doing any drafts/asks/IC, for some time now! If you're lucky, things will be posted tomorrow once I pick up the screen I ordered and get everything back up and running!
However, I'd super love to get your url so I can go ahead and delete whatever you're waiting on. The passive aggression is unnecessary and frankly childish. While you might have missed my last posts about the situation for a variety of reasons, I do not appreciate your tone or the entitlement you feel towards what I post on my own blog. I am always down to talk in DMs to give a status update on threads or even kick them up the ladder if a partner has been left waiting/is excited for a reply, but not if you're going to come in here on anon and insinuate that I don't care about my collaborators in a collaborative hobby.
We are all just playing Barbies on the internet in our personal dream houses! We don't have to get catty with each other about it! Grow up! Hope this helps!

2003 Lighthouse AU Chapter 1: First Meeting
This is inspired by @beebopurr 's Rise lighthouse au, and you should definitely go see theirs for yourself. I love their art! The first meeting in this chapter is taken almost directly from theirs as well as an ask they got. The rest is from me.
TW: mentions of guns and the use of them and an injury caused by one in this chapter and the next. Weapons (mostly guns) will be a continuing plot point that will eventually lead to the usage of one in the last chapter that will result in a major injury, but no death. If you don't want to see that, don't read. Minor swearing throughout the story as well.
Here it is on AO3:
Thank you @wendigomahana for beta reading!
Chapter one under cut!
I take a deep breath before stepping off my boat onto the pier. From a distance, the only thing I could see of this island was green. Now that I'm up close, I still only see green, aside from the giant-ass rock cliff the lighthouse is sitting on. I've never seen this many trees gathered in one place in my entire life.
I can't tell if it's gorgeous or intimidating.
I probably shouldn't do any exploring until I've studied a map of this place or something. Knowing me, I'd get lost in like ten minutes.
Once I reach the walkway leading off the pier, I look back up at the lighthouse to see a person walking out of it. He waves, and I wave back. Looking back down to the ground, I see the walkway leads to a path curving up onto the rock. I shove my hands back into my pockets as I follow the trail.
"You're a couple hours early," the man states as I reach the entrance to the cliff.
"I purposefully overestimated my arrival time in case the ocean tried to pull me back. Or in case I forgot how to sail."
He nods, breaking a smile. "Well, I s'pose that makes sense. You sail much?"
I shake my head. "Just got that boat a couple months back. Haven't been able drive one myself much lately, but I practically grew up on the water."
He chuckles and looks out towards the pier. "Certainly looks a lot better than my old dingy. Haven't used that thing in a few years 'cept for reef fishin. Hope it still works."
His shoulders move in a near silent chuckle as he turns towards the lighthouse.
"Already got all my stuff packed up. Friend a mine came and got the bigger things last week. Place should be cleaned out for ya, 'cept the bare essentials and furniture it came with. All of which 'sides the food is pretty old. Most of it's been here longer than me."
He gives me a tour of the place, which entirely consists of four and a half rooms. The main living area with a kitchenette, a bathroom, and a small storage closet all on the bottom floor, and then a curved set of stairs leading up to the bedroom. The stairs keep going up to the top of the lighthouse where the main workspace is, and then up to the light itself.
"And that's the whole building," he states with a shrug. "Not much, but they don't really expect one person to need more than this, I guess. Here, let me show you how all this works."
After about a half an hour of him going over all the rules and procedures and showing me what all the knobs and buttons do as well as how to work the phone and radio, we head back downstairs. Over the next hour or so he shows me a few chores that need to be done a certain way, and then goes over the rest of the chores that are pretty self-explanatory. Then, we find ourselves standing in the living room again.
"Well, I guess that's it," he starts as he turns to take one last look at the inside of the lighthouse. "Ya know, when I first got here, it only took me a couple months of boredom to become so done with this place I wanted nothing more than to leave it. Now…" he takes a deep, sentimental breath and shakes his head fondly. "Now I really think I'm gonna miss this."
"You can come back to see the place whenever you want," I tell him with a small smile. "Just keep in mind I took this job 'cause I'm a major introvert, so I'd like to be warned at least a few hours in advance, if ya could."
He chuckles. "I will certainly take that offer into consideration. And honestly, I may just take ya up on it within the next week or so. Got a feelin I'm gonna be homesick real soon. And this ain't even my home anymore."
"Where ya going?"
"Oh, I'm stayin with a friend a mine till I can find me a place. Gonna be doin nothin but house hunting for a bit now. Sure I'm ‘onna get bored with that pretty quick."
I smile. "Yeah, I can imagine."
He looks around one last time.
"Well, I s'pose I should get outta your hair now. Let you get yourself all comfortable and set up and all. Do ya need anything before I go?"
"What did you say your name was again, sir?"
He reaches his hand out for a handshake, and I take it.
"You can just call me Phil, little lady."
I shake his hand.
"It was nice meeting you, Phil."
"You as well, Ayla."
He turns to leave the building. Then, like he forgot something, he pauses and turns back to me, pointing towards something leaning against the wall next to the front door.
"Almost forgot, I'm leaving ya that rifle there, just in case."
"In case a what?"
He turns fully towards me now, eyebrows furrowed to show his seriousness.
"There's things out here. Don't know what they are, but they ain't human. Only seen one clearly once. Big green thing, walked on two legs, something wrong with its back. Now, I dunno what that thing was, but I sure as hell wouldn't let it get close enough to find out if I were you."
He walks towards the gun bag, unzipping it to show the rifle inside. A Marlin. Ruger-made.
"Ammo for it is on this shelf here right above it. I've shot at them with it a few times. They don't get much closer than the trees no more, but best to keep using this to teach them not to get closer. I got it all nice fer ya in it's bag, but it'd be smarter to keep it loaded and ready to grab at moment’s notice."
He gestures towards the door, hand still on the gun.
"Pretty sure I hit one a them last week. Not sure where, but I saw blood splatter on the ground the next morning. It's probably bled out somewhere, so hopefully that's one down."
He leaves the bag unzipped and walks back over to me.
"I've called people to deal with them. They got one a them, so they told me a few years back. But there's more, and those people come by every once in a while to try again. So, in case ya ain't feelin too safe, there’s no need to worry."
I nod, not sure whether to take this seriously or not. At least it's a nice gun.
"I'll keep that in mind."
He nods, satisfied, then turns back towards the door.
Standing near the edge of the cliff, I wave at Phil as he readies himself to pull away from the pier. At least we discovered the engine still runs, so he won't need to call someone to come get him.
Nice guy, but I got this job to be alone. Didn't want to have to wait a few more hours for someone to get here to tow his boat.
After I'm sure he's far from the island, I turn back towards the lighthouse. I'll get my stuff from my boat tomorrow. I've got all the essentials in my bag. For now, I'm exhausted from the trip and would rather just crash.
This lighthouse, like almost every other lighthouse in the country, is automated. Phil already did all the daily chores before I got here, saving the ones that needed demonstration for last so he could show me how to do them, so nothing to worry about until tomorrow.
The next week is pretty much just me getting the hang of things. The biggest of the chores is keeping the lens and windows in the tower clean so the light isn't any dimmer than it should be at night, as well as keeping an eye on all the electronics to make sure none of them are busted or wearing out or need replacement. Honestly, I'm already starting to understand what Phil meant by boredom. There's not much to do around here. I'm almost wishing I was living a few decades ago, when lighthouse keepers had way more to do without all the automated electronics. When they actually controlled the light and had to remain focused on their task. There's really nothing for me to focus on now.
I also haven't seen those "things" Phil was talking about. My first night, I thought I saw something moving around in the trees at the base of the rock, but I was so exhausted that night I wouldn't be surprised if I was delirious enough to think something moving in the wind was a monster. Or worse yet, maybe I was hallucinating. But after I got some sleep, everything was normal.
The second week begins just about the same. Chores about a third of the day at most, then finding ways to entertain myself for the rest of the time. I've begun researching hobbies that can be easily practiced on an island just a few miles from the mainland.
I get supplies delivered to me once a month. They take a list from me of essentials only, such as certain foods I like, what brand of toothpaste I prefer, etc., as well as anything anyone on the mainland wants to send me. If I want to order something online, I have to have it sent to someone I trust on the mainland, family or friend or whatever, and have them take it to the people loading the supply ship. Or just have them bring it to me themselves in their own boat. So basically, if I want a material hobby, like knitting or some other kind of crafty thing, I have to go through multiple channels just to get the supplies for it. So it'd be best to take up something I can do on the island with the bare essentials, just to avoid the hassle.
By this time, I've set up a comfortable chair on the cliff behind the lighthouse, overlooking the water. I've spent the last couple nights sitting out on this chair for a while to watch the waves.
It's on one of these particular nights I'm looking out over the water and watching the lighthouse light gleam across the sky in the distance, thinking on maybe taking up fishing again, when I hear something thud against the rocks beneath me.
I sit up straight, listening to see if I can figure out what that was before I have to investigate.
Or if I even want to investigate.
Not long after the initial thud, I hear what sounds like a groan, followed by a whimper and some thrashing in the water.
Shit.
Quickly, I grab my lantern, (extra strength, battery powered, obviously), and rush back inside to grab my med kit.
Something alive is down there, and probably hurt pretty bad by the sound of that thud.
I make my way down the path to the base of the lighthouse rock as quickly as I can before darting towards the water. Once I turn around the base to see the rocks beneath the lighthouse, I freeze.
There, leaning up against one of the larger rocks, is....
Something....
I can't tell what I'm looking at. The light from the lantern is barely hitting it, but I can see what looks like...green...scales? I can't tell, but it doesn't look like normal scale-less human skin. It's humanoid, but I'm not sure I'd call it human. And its back is...huge…
The second the light hits it, the creature whips its head towards me. I see what looks like brown eyes before they go completely white. They still look open, but there's some kind of...inner eyelid? I think? Covering them. Its head is a bit rounder than a human head normally is, and it looks naked, but there's something of a much lighter greenish color covering it in the front. And there's something wrapped around it, but I can’t really tell from here what it is.
Once it sees me, the creature quickly slides backwards to get away from me, but ends up trapped against the rock behind it. From the direction of the trail left by whatever it's trapped in, (I think it might be a fishing net?), it looks like it hit one of the smaller rocks closer to where I'm standing and pulled itself into an alcove created by the larger rocks further away. So it can't jump into the water and the cliff rock is too close to the rocks it's leaning against to be able to squeeze through.
It's trapped.
It seems to realize this after quickly turning to examine the rock it backed into, and whips its head back to me with wide, fearful, inner eyelid covered eyes.
I step a bit closer, allowing the light to cover more of the creature. The opening of the fishing net it's trapped in seems to be hooked over its neck. The netting is ripped and wrapped around its left arm and back, trapping the arm against its chest. The rest is dangling off, trailing out into the water and around the rocks.
I take a deep breath and step closer, causing the creature to curl up defensively against the rock. I hold up my med kit.
"Hey," I say, trying to sound as calm and soothing as possible. "I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm here to help, actually."
The creature turns its head slightly, towards the med kit. I can't see where it's looking with its eyes all white like that, but I can see something akin to recognition crossing its features before it seems to look back to me. It doesn't move, though.
I take another slow step closer. It still doesn't move. After a couple more steps, it suddenly decides to use another tactic to protect itself.
Unfurling itself, the creature crouches on its three available limbs and looks up at me with its teeth bared. The strangest, most menacing clicking noise I've ever heard escapes from its throat, and I immediately freeze in place.
When it sees that method had an effect, it takes what I can only assume by its still fearful face is something it believes to be a bold risk, and takes a step towards me.
Now I'm the one who doesn't move despite a terrifying, unknown creature advancing on me.
It snaps its teeth at me and clicks louder, stepping towards me again, but I can see that its resolve began waning when I didn't back away.
Making a bold move myself, I step towards it again.
It stops moving and flinches backwards a bit, causing a hiccup in the clicks.
"I want to help," I say again, holding up and pointing to the med kit. "This will help you feel better. I'm sure that net around you is painful."
It seems to understand some of my words, because it stops clicking and tilts its head as if it's listening. Now that there's more light on it, and in its current crouched position, I can clearly see what looked so strange about this creature's back.
It's got a shell. Like a turtle shell. That must be what's on its front, the plastron of the shell. And the sounds it was making just adds to that fact to tell me what's happening here, impossible as it may seem.
This thing is quite literally a giant, humanoid turtle.
I'm suddenly reminded of the description Phil gave me of those monsters he was talking about, and I begin to wonder if maybe he truly wasn't crazy, or if I'm already going crazy myself.
After a moment, the turtle creature straightens back up just a bit, sitting back on its legs and raising its functioning arm up off the ground about an inch or so, resting its elbow on its knee. It stares at the box.
"...help...?" It says slowly, curiously, in a raspy voice that obviously hasn't been used much.
I feel my eyes widen a little in shock. I don't know what I was expecting when I spoke to it, but apparently I wasn't expecting it to speak back.
"Y-yes," I say, taking another slow step forwards. It doesn't move back, but its head slides down slightly, as if it's watching my feet move. "Yeah, I want to help. I'm gonna see if I can get that net off ya, then this box has stuff in it I can use to fix your wounds."
I speak slowly, because I don't know what it can and can't understand. Hearing myself talk, I weirdly begin wondering if maybe it understands perfectly, and just doesn't need to talk, hence the raspy voice. So perhaps me speaking slowly and trying to use simple words is only being condescending. I shove those thoughts out of my head in favor of focusing on the situation at hand, deciding that if proof arises that this turtle thing does understand perfect English, I'll immediately start speaking to it normally.
The creature watches my slow approach, though now it holds just as much curiosity in its gaze as fear.
Once I'm almost within reaching distance of it, it falls backwards and pushes itself up against the rock again.
"Can...get it....no help...." It says slowly, reaching up with its free hand to grab the net around its other arm.
"Don't do that," I crouch down next to it, but it jerks away from me.
"No help," it says again, more firmly this time.
"You could hurt yourself doing that," I say, reaching into my pocket to grab my knife. "Let me get it,"
"No."
The turtle pulls on the net.
I reach out and grab its hand.
Jumping in surprise, it lets go of the net and turns towards me. Then just as suddenly, it's eyes screw shut in pain and it hisses, free hand shooting up to grab its neck where the net is hooked.
I sigh, figuring what probably happened, and bring the knife out of my pocket, holding the lantern up to see better.
Its eyes open, then immediately squint in the light.
"Here, can you hold this right here?" I ask, holding the lantern a bit closer to its free hand.
It turns its head to see me better as its hand comes up to grab the lantern. Unfortunately, in doing so, it sees the knife.
It gasps as it flinches backwards, it's hand shooting into the water behind it to support it leaning away from me.
"Oh shit-" I blurt out in realization as it uses its hand to scoot into the adjacent rock a couple feet away.
"Wait," I stand back up, adjusting the med kit on my back, hoping it didn't touch the water when I was crouched. "I need it to cut away that net. It's not gonna come off by pulling at it. I promise I'm not trying to hurt you."
"Bad men use," it states fearfully, pointing towards the knife. "Bad men hurt us with sharp thing."
Ok, so it seems to be capable of full sentences, weakly formulated as they are.
I sigh, stepping closer only a little and holding my hands up as open as I can while holding the lantern and knife.
"I'm not the bad men. I want to help. Knives can be used for good things too."
Staring wide-eyed at me, it slowly brings its hand back towards the net, gripping it but not pulling.
"That hurt you, remember?" I say, pointing with my lantern hand at the net. "Don't pull on it. This can get it off of you without hurting."
The turtle shrinks in on itself a little, staring at the knife. Its gaze slowly shifts over to me, and after a few moments of staring, it slowly nods.
"Ok," it says quietly. "No hurting...."
"No hurting," I repeat, slowly taking the couple steps necessary to get to it.
I crouch down next to it again and hold out the lantern for it to grab.
"Can you hold this for me? It'll make it easier for me to take the net off."
The turtle slowly reaches up and gently takes hold of the lantern handle, fingers brushing mine. That's when I notice it only has three. And they are indeed covered in scales. Very smooth, soft, green scales.
I try not to think about how strange that felt as I let go of the lantern.
"Now, just keep it right there, ok? This hopefully won't take long."
The turtle nods, keeping its white eyes trained on me, but it feels like its actual eyes are glaring at the knife.
Slowly, so it can see everything that's happening, I move the knife to sit underneath the net, blade pointed up, and begin sawing away, using my other hand to anchor the net in place. It doesn't take long before the thickest part of it is cut, taking most of the tension off the turtle's neck.
The second that tension is gone, the turtle sighs in relief, leaning back a little like it's deflating as the stress leaves the muscles of its shoulders. It keeps watching, though.
I cut away a few more pieces of the netting still holding its arm in place, then slowly reach up to its neck as I put my knife away. The turtle tenses up again, not sure what I'm doing and once again fearful of my intentions.
"I wanna look and see what it did to your neck," I explain. "It hurt you, so I wanna make sure you're not bleeding."
It flinches slightly away from my hand, then looks down at the net now in the water and its newly freed arm. After a moment, it looks back up at me and slowly nods.
I slowly place the tips of my fingers on its face and turn its head towards me to give me a better view of its neck. I can feel its hidden eyes on me as I lean around it to see the wound better. Luckily, it doesn't look like it's bleeding. At least, not badly. However, the skin (scales?) there has been rubbed nearly raw and there seems to be a small opening where the net sliced into the flesh.
"Ok, that's not too bad," I say. "Let me see your arm."
I release its face and move a bit in front of it so I can see the arm more directly. It raises its left arm, far less hesitant than I expected, and allows me to hold it in my hands. There are a few scratches but nothing major, the realization of which has me letting out a breath of relief. The turtle tilts its head curiously at the sound, but doesn't say anything.
"Well," I start. "It doesn't look too bad. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to get you inside to look at it in better lighting and to bandage you up. Of course, you don't have to if you don't want to, but it would make me feel better to know your wounds are covered. At least the neck one."
What I can only assume to be this hairless creature's brows furrow in confusion at my words.
"Inside?" It asks. "Where?"
I point up to the cliff, where the top of the lighthouse is visible from underneath.
"In there. That's where I live."
It follows my finger, and when its eyes land on the lighthouse, its jaw drops in a light gasp. Unexpectedly, the inner eyelids covering its eyes slide open, revealing my previous assumption of its eyes being brown to be correct. Its surprisingly human-like chocolate irises stare up at the lighthouse in wonder as I watch on.
"In there?" It asks in disbelief.
The more I hear its voice, the more I believe this creature is male. It sounds young, (which doesn't help), with a very soft and somewhat higher pitched voice, but the tone sounds to be more in the masculine area.
"Yeah, in there," I say, slowly standing. "Don't worry, I live alone."
I reach out my hand to help it (him?) up. He turns his head back towards me, and his eyes move to my hand once he sees it hovering in front of him. After a moment of staring, he looks back up at me.
"Can't go there."
Now it's my turn to tilt my head, but more in confusion.
"Why not?"
"Angry man lives there," he explains, looking back down at my hand. "Very loud. Bang stick hurts. Can't go there."
My eyes widen in realization.
Phil told me he kept the "big green thing(s)" away from the lighthouse by shooting at them. He said he hit one last week.
I quickly look the turtle over again, but he doesn't look like he's been shot anywhere. Not anywhere I can see in this lighting, at least.
"Here," I say, holding one hand closer to his right and reaching for the lantern with the other one. "Grab my hand with yours. I'm gonna help you stand up."
He glances between my face and my hand a couple times and waits for me to pull the lantern out of his hand before he slowly moves it towards mine. Gently, his three fingers slide into my five, and we both close our fingers around each other's palms.
I'm suddenly hit with the thought that this guy is probably very heavy. But luckily for me, his left arm is not too injured for him to push himself part of the way, mainly using my grip for stability as he gets himself up.
"That guy left almost two weeks ago," I say as he lets go to test if he can stand on his own. "I live there now, not him."
The turtle, now standing just about eye-level with me, turns to look at me in shock after he's determined he's quite stable on his own two feet.
"Angry man is gone?" he asks, sounding doubtful.
I nod. "It's only me. No one else."
He stares at me for a moment before full comprehension sets in. He then snaps his attention back to the lighthouse and a look I can only describe as pure joy and disbelief lights up his features.
He points up at the building above us.
"I can go in there?" he asks in a quiet voice, seemingly in awe of the concept.
I nod again, smiling. "You sure can. Just follow me."
I turn to lead the way around the rock back to the path. I hear his steps behind me, and a couple jumps in the water as well, as if he were a child jumping for joy at the thought of going into a lighthouse.
I begin to wonder if he is.
A child.
That would explain how young he sounds, and his minor speaking comprehension.
Oh damn. If he's a child, how big will he be as an adult?
All thoughts and worry leave my mind the second my foot steps onto dry land. I cringe at the squelch and the rushing feeling between my toes.
I hadn't really thought. I'd just run out the door. I didn't grab the wading boots. So now my sneakers and socks are soaked.
Ugh, I hate wet shoes.
The turtle doesn't seem to care about the sound of my shoes, however, as his focus remains transfixed on the lighthouse building the entire trip up to it.
Once we reach the door, I pull off my shoes and socks, leaving them outside beside the doorstep to dry, before opening the door and stepping inside to set the lantern down and dry my feet on the doormat. I turn towards the turtle and gesture for him to come inside.
"Come on in," I say as I leave the door to head to the bathroom.
When I come back out wearing dry pants and holding a towel for him, I find him standing at the door still, wide eyes taking in every detail of the living room.
I step towards him, gently grabbing his good arm to tug him inside. My measly pull doesn't move him even the slightest bit, but he gets the hint and steps forward. I close the door behind him and turn to put the towel over his shoulders. Or, I try to. The shell ends up taking most of the coverage.
He turns towards me at the feeling of something touching him, then looks down in surprise to see the towel. I walk in front of the turtle to pull the towel up tighter around his shoulders.
"You can use this to dry yourself off. Like this."
I rub a small part of the towel over his wet arm, then pull it away to show the now dry scales.
He blinks in surprise, then grabs the towel and begins rubbing it over his scales, trying to recreate the magic in other wet areas of his body. I smile at this as I head over to one of the stools at the kitchen counter, pulling it out and turning it towards him. Setting the med kit on the counter, I turn back to see he's already mostly dried himself off.
"Alright come sit here so I can patch you up," I tell him.
He looks away from the bottom of his foot he's currently wiping the towel on and up at me before glancing down at the stool. He uses the towel for one last scrub of his other foot before slowly making his way to the stool to sit down. I step around in front of him as he puts the towel back over his shoulders and hugs it to him as much as he can.
"I'm gonna need to see your arm and neck, bud," I tell him, motioning to the towel. He pouts, but takes it off and bunches it in his lap, hugging it to himself. I make a mental note to get him my warmest blanket after we're done here.
I spend the next few minutes cleaning and dressing his wounds. Mostly the one on his neck. There's only one on his arm bad enough to need to be covered. His neck wound is the most concerning, but so long as it stays clean and covered the scales will probably grow back.
"There," I say, finishing the last one. "That should be better."
He looks down at the bandage on his arm. He hadn't reacted well to the cleaning alcohol used on his wounds, especially when it hit the raw open spot on his neck. But with some gentle encouragement, he had allowed me to continue. I'm not sure if that means he trusts me, but at least he's not afraid of me anymore.
"Can I see the light now?" he asks in a very excited, childish voice.
I glance into his eyes to see them wide open, a hopeful gleam in his irises.
I can't help but smile at the childish enthusiasm.
"Sure, but you have to be careful. We don't want to break it. The light is very important for the ships going by in the water."
He nods enthusiastically, dropping the formerly precious towel as he stands.
On the way up through the bedroom, I grab him a blanket, and he happily wraps it around himself as he walks up the stairs.
The turtle is practically shaking with joy the entire time we're up in the light. He stays true to his promise to be careful, but he apparently took it as "don't touch anything". On multiple occasions, I can see his hands twitching towards some mechanism on the light out of curiosity, before he remembers jerks them away. So, I show him some areas I'm not too worried about him touching, just to help him get that out of his system.
When his hand first touches the cool metal at the base of the lamp, he seems to melt into the touch, entirely in awe of the giant metal beast in front of him. He watches the lamp turn, marveling at the sight.
"Why does it do that?"
"Do what?"
He slowly looks towards me and holds one finger up before moving it in circles, similar to how the lamp spins.
"Oh, the lamp spins to give sailors the impression the light is blinking. Or turning on and off. That way they won't mistake it for a star, and will know they need to go towards it."
"Cool...." He says in an impressed, breathy tone, as he looks back up at the lamp. Then he tilts his head, seemingly confused.
"But..." He thinks for a moment. "It can...blink...itself?" He glances at me, then turns back towards the light, almost shy now.
"Sorry..."
Ah. He's embarrassed by his question.
"That's a good question, actually," I start, and he turns back towards me, blinking in surprise, before a slight smile graces his features.
"Back before they could just screw in a lightbulb whenever the light went out, they used giant lanterns. Those aren't nearly as easy to turn on and off, and would have to have someone sitting by them all night in order to keep it up. So that's why they came up with the spinning thing. The lens magnified the lantern light, and that's what was spun. It moved around the lantern to create the blinking effect."
As I explain, I gesture to certain parts of the lamp that are still somewhat similar, though the whole thing is essentially a giant flashlight. The turtle watches with genuine interest as I answer what he believed to be a stupid question with an entire historical/scientific monologue.
"They did that for so long it became iconic, and what sailors specifically looked for. So some lighthouses, like this one, still spin the light around. Just for sentimental reasons, to be honest."
"Woah...." He says under his breath, genuinely impressed by the reasoning. "That was so smart...."
"It really was, huh?" I look around a moment before an idea comes to me. I head back downstairs to the office area and look around the walls until I find it. Stretching up, I carefully pull the paper off the wall, smiling down at it in my hands before heading back up.
He had turned and stood to watch me when he’d noticed me leaving, and observes me curiously as I ascend the stairs. I hold the paper out to him.
"Do you know what that is?" I ask him as he takes it. His "brows" furrow in concentration as he stares at it.
"A....old....lighthouse?" He asks, unsure. He looks up at me and tilts his head.
"Yep. It's the first lighthouse. Or what they believe is the first lighthouse."
His eyes widen in excitement, and he looks back down at the drawing.
"There's a few different designs of what they believe it looked like, but that's the most agreed upon. The thing is in ruins now, so there's no way to be sure."
He listens to my words before pointing at a few written on the page.
"Pa...pa-ras?" He tries to pronounce the word above the building on the paper.
Ok, so he can kind of read. Interesting.
I point to the letters of the word.
"'P' and 'h' together make an 'f' sound, and that's an 'o', pronounced just like that." I don't wanna move too fast and try to explain the accent it should be pronounced with, so I stick with the basics. That should get him to pronounce it almost exactly.
He stares for a second longer before trying again.
"Pha...ros?"
"Yes!" I say, and he smiles at the praise.
"Pharos was built in Alexandria, Egypt. They think about twenty-five hundred years ago or so. It's the first known lighthouse, so everyone who studies or works in lighthouses are called 'pharologists' in honor of the first one."
He looks back up from the paper and points at me.
"You?"
I chuckle. "Yes, that would make me a pharologist too, since I work in a lighthouse and have studied how they work."
He beams at this information. "Cool!"
He asks a few more questions about lighthouses and the mechanisms of the light itself, and I do my best to answer all of them. After about half an hour, he begins slowing down. I notice he looks at the bandage on his arm a few times. Then he goes silent for a bit, staring out the window at something in the trees and pulling the blanket tighter around himself. I look out too, trying to see if I can find what he's looking at, but I just see trees.
Just when I'm wondering if I should question him or just leave him to it, he turns to me.
"Are you a doctor?"
I blink a few times in surprise at the random question, before shaking my head.
"If you mean a medical doctor, no. I have some minor medical training, but nothing to the level of an actual doctor."
"But you can fix...uh...wounds?"
"If they're not bad enough to need a hospital, yes. Why?"
“Hos...pital…?”
“It’s a place where sick or hurt people go to get better. The real doctors are there.”
He stares at me for a moment, seeming to contemplate something. Then he looks back out the window.
"We need a doctor...." He says quietly, almost too low for me to hear.
This is the second time he's referenced there being more of him. Phil had spoken as if there were multiple, so I had automatically been thinking like there were. But now that I'm actually thinking about it, I begin to wonder if there's like a whole tribe of them, or if it's just a single family. And if he's a kid, then what do the adults look like? Would they be more wary of me than this one?
"Do you need me to go somewhere?" I ask, almost hoping he says they can bring the injured party here. If there are bigger and far more untrusting and protective adults out there, I'd rather not risk going into their territory.
He turns back to me.
"He hurt to move. Sleep all day. Hurt when he's awake. Not eat much anymore."
"So, you don't think he can come here?" I ask.
He looks down to think for a moment, then shakes his head.
"Can't move."
"Ok..." I cross my arms in contemplation. "Do you know what's wrong with him? How he got hurt?"
At that, the turtle looks back up at me, and upon seeing me his eyes widen in some kind of realization before he flinches backwards.
Oh, he's scared of me again. What did I do?
I back up a step, holding my hands out.
"Are you ok? I'm sorry if I-"
"Human…" he says, wrapping his arms and the blanket around himself. "Bang stick...."
Oh....
OH.
The one Phil shot is still alive.
"Where?" I ask.
He looks back at me, confused.
"Where did the bang stick hit him?" I ask again.
A different kind of realization passes over his features, and he moves the blanket to raise his left hand and points to a spot on his right arm. Just below the elbow. Then he moves his finger across his scales from one side of the outer arm to the other, drawing a line.
So the bullet grazed him, but left a sizeable enough gash. That gash probably became infected.
Damn. That infection’s probably been raging for over two weeks. I'm almost shocked the arm hasn't fallen off. Unless it's already spread up further. Cutting the arm off to save the body is probably out of the question now, as it's highly likely it's already reached organs. There's no way he'd be able to survive much longer without antibiotics.
Of which I'm not exactly in rich supply.
Also, these are turtles. They have a different form of healthcare in certain areas. I know a lot about turtles, but I'm trained in human medical health. I wouldn't be too confident I'm doing the right thing if you threw a heavily injured turtle in front of me.
"Is it swollen?" I ask. I know the answer, but I'm hoping he can tell me it's not as bad as I think.
He makes a curious sound, almost like a chirp, as he tilts his head.
"His arm," I gesture towards my arm, then hold my hand open around it to signify a bigger size. "Is it bigger than it should be?"
He nods and makes a similar gesture himself to show how much bigger.
Ok, not too much bigger, I suppose. But then again, I can't actually be sure until I see for myself.
"Ok, let me get some stuff."
This definitely can't wait until morning. If he's had an infection in his arm since it was shot, every second counts.
I grab up my med kit as well as any and every antibiotic, painkiller, and anti-inflammatory I can find and throw them in a separate bag along with a few bottles of water and some clean rags. Stopping to think for a moment, I decide to bring some strong sleeping pills too. Just in case surgery or something painful of the sort ends up needing to happen. On that note, I grab multiple sharp objects of differing sizes to throw in the second bag as well.
This is really gonna suck.
Leaving the storage closet, I find the turtle blanketless and standing in the living room, staring at the door.
I should really find a name for him. Or maybe ask him and see if he's already got a name.
"Hey," I start, walking up to him. "So, I can't believe I haven't already asked you, but do you...."
I trail off as I notice his attention has not turned to me, and he's still staring at the door. Following his gaze, I freeze when I realize what he's staring at.
The gun is still by the door.
I debate whether I should try to pull his attention away from it or go over and physically move it.
Sighing, I figure touching it would make things worse.
"It's not gonna hurt you," I say softly.
He slowly turns to me.
"It hurt Mikey."
Mikey.
Ok, so they do have names.
Interesting.
"That's because the guy holding it wanted to hurt him," I say. "It can't hurt anyone unless it's being held by someone who wants to use it to hurt people."
Slowly, I move towards it. I hadn't closed the bag, so it's still leaning against the wall halfway exposed. Reaching out, carefully, so he can see what I'm doing, I grab the zipper and zip up the bag so the rifle is no longer visible.
"Now, no one's holding it, so it won't shoot. It won't hurt you. And it's gonna stay here. I'm not intending on bringing it with us."
Unless....
I look back at him.
"Is where we're going dangerous?"
He tilts his head. "Why would it be?"
I think for a moment on how to explain, and settle on: "It's probably not dangerous for you, but is it dangerous for me?"
He stares for a moment, thinking, before shaking his head.
"I'll be with you. They'll have to let you in."
Ok, ominous, but I'll take it.
"Then it'll stay here."
I move away from the gun to open the door.
"Why bring it to danger? That would make the danger worse?"
He steps around the gun bag to get through the door, giving it a wide berth and staring at it the whole time like it might jump out at him.
"Well, while some people use those to hurt, others use them to protect," I explain, closing the door behind us. "If we were going somewhere dangerous for me, I would be able to use that to protect myself. But I trust you to have my back, so no worries."
I also feel if he had that kind of reaction to seeing it, his family may be just as bad or worse if I walk up carrying the thing that put Mikey into such a scary state. It may end up causing the danger to me, whereas if I didn't have it I would be perfectly safe.
He thinks on what I said for a long time, leading me from the lighthouse into the trees, before finally speaking.
"Why can it do both? Why protect from something that hurts with something that hurts? Isn't that what shields are for?"
"Well, remember how I used the knife to help you? It can hurt, but it can also be used to help."
He turns back to me, still seemingly confused, but connecting the dots.
I sigh.
"If whoever is trying to hurt you tries hard enough, you may need to hurt them back to get them to stop."
He stares at me for a moment before going back to his task of leading me through the forest.
He doesn't talk any more after that.
A while later, as we near some kind of grove-looking area with what appears to be a small cave hidden in a thick patch of trees, the turtle stops and turns to me, nearly swinging the lantern into my face with how quickly he spins.
"Is that why?"
"Is that why what?"
He opens his mouth to speak, but nothing comes out for a moment as he contemplates his question.
"Is....is that why he hurt us?"
"The angry man?"
He nods.
"Did he think we hurt him?"
I stare at him for a moment, opening my mouth to answer, but ultimately closing it as I try to find the right words. He watches, patiently, waiting to know if he and his family had done something wrong.
I take a deep breath.
"In a manner of speaking, yes. He thought you were going to hurt him, and he wanted to stop you before you could."
"But..." He looks back towards the grove.
"Mikey got too close. He did not hurt angry man. He just wanted to see what angry man was doing. He said angry man was tearing up the lighthouse and he want to see why. Then angry man used the bang stick. Mikey was just watching. He did not mean anything-"
I hold up my hand to stop him.
"Of course he didn't. But the angry man didn't understand. He thought something else was happening. He's the one that misunderstood. Mikey did nothing wrong."
He watches me as I talk, big brown eyes looking about ready to cry.
"What's your name, by the way? I'm sorry I haven't asked."
He sniffles a little, then rubs his eyes.
"D-Donny," he says. "Father called me Donny."
Uh oh.
That was past tense.
Wait, Phil did say one of them was caught a few years ago.
Shit. Are there a bunch of children out here without an adult?
Is there a mother nearby who doesn't talk much, if at all, so she never says names, and that’s why he only mentioned his father?
Is there another type of adult and offspring care system I'm unaware of happening here?
…am I in danger and Donny doesn't know?
I shake my head, just barely enough so Donny doesn't see.
"Ok, Donny," I say, hopefully in a soothing voice. "My name is Ayla."
A small smile appears.
"Hi Ayla."
I chuckle.
"Let's not think about the angry man right now. Mikey needs help, right?"
Donny nods quickly, turning back to the grove.
