look at this adorable, tiny, handmade plate I bought today (shot glass for scale) 😍😍😍 it's so tiny, I could only keep maybe a pair of earrings or some small jewelry in it. but I love it so much ❤❤❤ I saw a bunch of them, and I just instantly knew I had to buy one of them, and the floral pattern on this one was the prettiest, there was plates that were even smaller than this one but the pattern on them wasn't as visible as this one.

plenty of people have said this better than I will but I love it (read: it's very annoying) when people suggest turning a craft hobby into a side business. There is no succinct way to explain to non-crafters, in a casual conversation, that for high-quality handmade goods, the amount of physical labor required already puts the cost of those goods far beyond what regular people would be willing or able to pay for those items. the cost of materials alone is sometimes more than what people would be willing to pay. not to mention the labor required to market yourself, especially if it's a fairly niche thing.

I told a friend about the horseshoe crab backpack I'm making and he made this comment about turning it into a side business. and. I know it's intended to be encouraging and supportive, but like.

Including materials, and given a very optimistic assumption that I will finish this project in another ~3 hours of work,

Charging at the federal minimum hourly wage of $7.25 for my labor, this backpack would cost approximately $203.

Charging at the somewhat more "acceptable" $15 hourly wage, it would cost $395.

Charging at $25/hr for a wage that actually values my labor beyond simple survival, it would cost $615 or more.

I'm not going to finish it in another 3 hours. And I am undeniably an amateur– the finished product isn't going to be perfect and crisp the way something "should" be to cost that much, so it won't be "worth" the amount it's technically worth.

Projects like this that I do for fun I am absolutely willing to replicate for close friends at a significantly lower price as a "gift" (asking for cost of materials and/or only a partial cost of labor). But there's no reasonable way to actually monetize a hobby like this.

A homage to this story that’s been 33 years and 6 millennia in the making. I designed this ages ago and it is finally done! I wanted it to look kind of like some vintage thingamajig that Aziraphale might have in the bookshop.

The Deity of the Ocean

The deity of the ocean, liquids, rainbows, sea creatures, and eyes. He did not really have interactions with humans until meeting Aiden.

He’s very curious about mortals and their life, loves to learn and explore.

Wallys hair changes to any water he’s in, swamp hair, river water, so on! He can’t go on land in his deity form or he’ll flood the land. His hair is a constant water source.

Like any other deity he can be as big as the ocean or as small as a droplet. In his mortal form, he is og Wallys height with long hair that needs to be cut every once in a while.

In deity form, I like to draw him with at least 9 fish as a nod to the neighbors ^^ The eye next to his actual eye moves! He can look around with it! So his eyes are never really closed 👁👁. He does not become enraged often. For the most part, he’s rather relaxed.

He calls upon you with a sirens call or the sound of the ocean beckoning your name or the ocean wind.

He bends down so far it almost seems ridiculously uncomfortable, but the need to feel you skin to skin outweighs everything —he's missed you too much during the day, none of your lessons aligning in the morning. 

“Oh, it’s a little leaf!” 

Squinting his eyes, he tries to make out the shape of the so-called 'little leaf' but all he sees is a ball of tangled string. Had you been ripped off again? With his chin resting on you, his voice sounds funny as he mumbles, “It looks cheap. Where did you buy it?'"

“I... I made it,” you say slowly. “For you.”

You can feel him tensing up, as if someone dumped cold water on him. His hands placing on the side of your arms, head lifting and peeking closer. Alhaitham tries, racks through his brain to come up with anything to make this better, but he is an awful liar.

It takes all of your control to hold back a giggle, placing a hand over one of his nervous one as you look up to his frowned face and reassure your poor panicked partner:

Alhaitham debates whether he should keep it in his wallet for good luck, or if to add it to the box of gifts he has received from you —one saved carefully in his closet. Either of them, tempting. 

As if you read his mind, you decide for him, taking his headphones from their spot in his bag and carefully tie the little crocheted sprout in the middle of it. It makes it look as if a small plant grew from his headphones, like that leaf emoji besides his name in your contact list.

It is the most precious thing he’s ever since, second only to you. 

“It looks a little childish…” You murmur at his silence. “We can take it off if you want—”

“No, I love it,” he stops that idea as soon as it rises, stealing his item back. He admires it as if it were a masterpiece, smile not fading for the rest of that week. 

You made this, with your very hands, for him.

Next thing you know, your face is peppered by a series of soft kisses as appreciation, the next being more tender than the firsts.
