Oooh okay so yes but like not majorly. I don’t think they’re super duper alike. Leo is a lot more sarcastic and witty with his humor and like… idk how to describe Tommy’s humor. It’s a lot of completely bizarre bits. I have both of their styles of humor because I love them bith

the big similarities I see are like, you know that classic tommyinnit video intro ‘most people find me annoying at first’ I feel like that REALLY applies to Leo lmao. He’s annoying as shit. I guess that’s just how I like them.

the other similarity is how Tommy is just so damn brother coded. Everyone he speaks to loves him. Everyone is endeared by him. He will just meet someone and use the charisma blast on them in his own Tommy way and they’ll love him

this reminds me a lot of Leo. His charisma, ofc he’s brother coded because he had brothers but like the way he can get people to love him in spite of being kind of annoying. Like how he is with señor hueso. He is clearly annoyed by Leo but he cares. Yk??

that’s about all though. They are similar in some ways but I don’t like Leo because he reminds me of Tommy or anything like that. To me they are mostly individual they just share a couple of traits that I happen to enjoy

TLDR: what if fandom's debating Tommy's racism and misogyny in the Begins episodes, but the writers intended for him to 'just' come off as a jerk (and that's how the GA took it)?

I'm not saying I'm representative of the GA, but I did start watching the show before getting into fandom and I didn't interpret Tommy's worst transgressions the way fandom has, which got me wondering whether this could be one of those cases where fandom is looking more closely than the show expects (and more than the GA does).

**Obligatory disclaimer: this would not absolve Tommy of his part in perpetuating the toxic environment during Gerrard's first captaincy of the 118, because icing people out and such behaviors are still not okay.**

The scenes:

1.- "Hey, Eli. You forget to tip the delivery guy?" -> I thought that was 'just' a dismissive comment, certainly more pointed and mean-spirited than the 'prank' they pulled on Buck when he arrived (pretending they didn't know who Cpt. Nash was), but in that vein. I only learned of the racist implications through fans who pointed out the food they were eating.

2.- NY bitchiness:

Chim: Seriously? I would have bet money that you were from the East Coast. You just kind of have that vibe. Hen: Thank you for the compliment? Tommy: New York bitchiness is a compliment? Chim: Whoa, nobody said anything like that, come on.

This one, I was convinced it was a West Coast vs East Coast (maybe even blue collar vs white collar) thing! I didn't even register 'bitchiness' as gender-related. Like before, I am NOT saying I was right, just that I'm used to that... rivalry being A Thing and that's how I took it. Like in Europe, if you are comparing someone to Parisians it's... not often a compliment 😬.

It's Tommy who Chim chooses to approach, which could be pure chance (he caught him alone) but still, when trying to ingratiate yourself into a group that hasn't been welcoming so far, you don't start with the worst ones do you?

Right after being rudely denied by Tommy, he finds Eli. Eli, whose only role in 9-1-1 will be 'Good Guy, Gives Good Advice', doesn't commiserate or warn Chim against Tommy (or anyone else). He takes Chim on calls, and back at the station says:

Eli: It's not personal, you know. Look, in this job, friends die and funerals are held. They're not gonna just give you their friendship until you earn their respect. They're not just protecting you, they're protecting themselves. You don't name a puppy until you know it's gonna pull through.

My point is that while those comments can be read as racist/misogynistic and I'm not telling anyone not to, I'm unsure if that was the intention (or if regardless of intent, if it was the GA's takeaway from those scenes).

You know, because there's a chance it's not that deep and the writers totally missed the implications. They did parallel Mara's storyline to that call about a dog...

So do we think maybe Buck golfing with Gerrard is something along the lines of Tommy giving advice to Buck to get to know him and play nice to make his life easier (or some such - because Tommy never actually had any hated directed at him from Gerrard so never actually experienced first hand what he was like in the same way Chim and Hen did).

Which Buck will do and find out a few things about his situationships (it’s technically unlabelled as a relationship so I’m not calling them boyfriends!) past behaviours and dots will start connecting all those red flags that Tommy is waving?!!

After bringing the mummy into the station, they start having water contamination problem. Then one of the visiting kids dressed up as Tiana accidentally let loose her pet frog.

So when Buck wakes up with boils all over his face, he thinks he’s brought the plagues of Egypt onto the 118.

I don't know how much of this is true, but apparently a Tommy hater on X talked about shooting Tommy and um, y'all that's... I know we don't like Tommy (hence why we're Tommy haters) but let's please think about how you saying you'd kill a gay character is not the "haha, I'm funny" moment you think it is.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think wanting a gay character (who's problematic, I won't deny that) to die is funny when gay characters are only recently not being killed off in media and are given happy endings. Also queer people in general are being killed and just because we're talking a fictional character doesn't mean that some bigoted people will not equate talking about a fictional character like this as it being okay to talk about actual queer people like this.

Like we all understand that being racist to a fictional character is just as bad as being racist to real people because it can be used as an excuse to be racist to actual people, right? So that logic also applies to gay characters.

Since 7x04 was in Buck's POV, he probably thought that when Tommy kissed him, he was expressing his interest in him. But in actuality, that was probably Tommy's way of shutting him up because he was tired of hearing him ramble.
