on today's rewatch: S3E7 [Joining of hands]
I haven't done a good job in putting out original content for the past few months and I blame my new job entirely 😂 It's so intense, it turns my brain into mush most days.
I'm 68% functional right now so if my ramblings don't make sense, I apologise.
Today, I am thinking of Colin's retreating back after he discovered the Pen was LW.
(Colouring this gif is so hard. It's so dark 😭 I wish I was better at this.)
Tumblr media
I don't know why I'm locked in on Colin's back.
On him walking away.
On his coat billowing as it matches the force of his steps. I have a thing for people's footsteps or way of walking because I often think about how I walk and how it represents what I'm feeling at the moment. My many, many rewatches offered me the realisation that there isn't a lot of full body shots of Luke Newton for S1 and S2 nor are walking shots. If there are full body shots, he's with Nicola so your attention is split.
I read a meta somewhere that book!Colin canonically loves walking so much so that he would endure the rain to help clear his thoughts.
I always thought that this walk was more heartbroken than angry. He walked away because his heart was breaking into pieces. But I also think that he walked away because of his love for her.
I know that the last thing he says to Pen in this scene is that he will never forgive her but I also think that he was talking more to Lady Whistledown than to Pen because at this point, they are still separate in his mind.
Clearly, this walk is the hardest to understand and has been part of heated debates of what canonically would Colin really do (this being compared to the source material aka book!Colin). I don't want to broach that debate too much because I would've done the same as Colin (as someone who is an introverted demisexual empath who value the words that come out of my mouth and actions to take but often overthinks them). And these are mere ramblings of a Polin brainrotter.
Now, there are three significant full body walking shots of Colin in S3: Colin's entrance in E1 (the faux swagger), this retreating walk in the early part of E7 (the heartbreak), and the him trying to clear his thoughts in the latter part of the same episode (the drunk, angry yet pensive one).
This walk represents the war that Colin has fought so many times. When his emotions overtake him, he finds himself walking away. I say find because I don't think Colin was self-aware nor mature enough to understand why he walked away. It's why he traveled around, it's what happened to him with Marina, and what he almost did to Penelope. In my head, this very distinctly represents Colin's trauma about his dad's death. His emotions always get the better of him.
This is another thing that I appreciate about Colin and Penelope's relationship-- they helped each other grow. If Penelope didn't have the courage or honestly, the love, to confront Colin when he was about to walk away in the modiste scene, we wouldn't have known the root of Colin's emotional trauma. Of him feeling inadequate and abandoned/betrayed by the people he loves.
On a different side of this debate, this is what separates this relationship to all other relationships that Colin has in his life-- the depth of love and understanding that him and Pen have shared gave them the the power to get out of this situation much, much stronger.
(on a side note, writing this is making me so excited for s4 even though I want to tamper my expectations)
In conclusion, I didn't appreciate the words that came out of Colin's mouth. But on the other hand, I appreciated that he walked away and he didn't do what book!Colin did. While this scene was devastating to watch, I really really appreciate how Colin spent time understanding his emotions about the whole LW situation. I know we all wanted to tear his hair out by the end but love doesn't put a timeline on forgiveness. Nor does it paint a pretty picture.
But time does help in growing yourself better.

gonna throw my 2 cents in on this current Fandom Topic;
You cannot give in to resentful isolation. I'm serious.
Even if your last attempts went badly you have to keep trying. You have to make mistakes to learn from them. You have to find out who's worth your time and who you click with somehow, and you can only do that by Doing It Scared.
I fall into those mindsets, a lot. They suck. They're powerful and overwhelming and painful. I have to fight with myself and repeat over and over, No, you know your friends care about you. They've SAID that.
And I have to do this all the time. In minor and major ways.
Do It Scared. Try. If you feel like you've failed? Try again. There are ways to build self confidence but you have got to start with letting yourself feel confident any little way possible.
Don't give in to resentful isolation, that will only hurt you.
We all have bad brain days, weeks, or months.
Fandom will be waiting for you.
If you've started to treat fandom like a vending machine where lore/fanfic/art/screenshots go in and compliments come out, you should take a break.

In Defense of the FNAF Movie…
I was thinking about the FNAF Movie again today and I wanted to go on a little tangent if that's alright with y'all lol.
I know most fans enjoyed the movie, which is great! But I did see some fans, especially some OG fans, who did not like the movie at all, saying it didn't take itself seriously enough, it was too campy, it wasn't scary enough, and it didn’t follow the lore. I can understand those criticisms to an extent. But as an OG fan myself, I think the movie captured the tone of FNAF perfectly.
FNAF at its core, is silly. The concept of kid-friendly animatronic characters that are mascots for a Chuck E Cheese type restaurant being possessed is a ridiculous concept. Granted, how they became possessed is where the horror of the franchise comes into play. FNAF was never all campy or all horror, it was always a mix of both, even in the first few games, just based on the concept alone.
I think too many people expected it to be really scary, but I believe that was the wrong perspective. There were jumpscares in the games, yeah, but I think the most prominent emotion from the early games would elicit dread, not horror. I went into the movie knowing it would be campy and goofy, but I also knew there would be some horror aspects. BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT FNAF IS!
I think if the movie took itself too seriously, no one else would, because fans know it’s not an overall serious franchise. This is the same franchise that brought in Exotic Butters and MPreg in one of their books! That’s not to say that there aren’t serious subjects in the game; a serial killer, multiple child murders, grusome deaths, loss of family members; the game is not all sunshine and rainbows.
But what I think FNAF does as a whole is mix those horror aspects with its campiness really well. You can’t have one without the other in this series. And that’s what I think the movie did a great job with. I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much if it was too serious or if it relied on humor alone. Don’t get me wrong, this was not a perfect movie, there were definitely things that needed improvements. But I don’t think the tone was one of them.
At first I was a little disappointed that the movie wouldn’t be rated R, but now I can appreciate why they stuck to PG-13 instead. FNAF has never been bloody or gory, any deaths that would occur in the franchise would be off-screen or portrayed in the 8-bit mini games. I think the only time we see blood is during the springlock failure in FNAF 3, and again, it was 8-bit blood. Most of the horror is left up to the imagination of the viewer, which in my opinion, is a lot scarier than just outright showing you what happened. Fear of the unknown is extremely powerful.
The last point I wanna bring up is the fact some people do not like the deviation from the game’s lore. Need I remind you, this is not the first time the franchise has done this. The books have their own separate lore! Some of it lines up with the games, a lot of it doesn’t. But what all of these continuities have are animatronics who are possessed by children who were murdered by William Afton; that is the core story of FNAF no matter if you’re playing the games, reading the books, or watching the movie. They each take their own liberties in telling different versions of the story, but they all revolve around the same main focus. In my opinion, I think it would have been a little boring to see the movie play out one for one like the games, especially considering how confusing and convoluted the game lore is!I’m curious as to where they will go in future movies!
I can see why general audiences and critics would not like this movie, because they wouldn’t understand the tone that it was going for. They wouldn’t get the references or the story beats that the fans would. But it wasn’t really made for them, which is fine! I think the movie we got was really great, not a masterpiece, but just a really good adaption of what FNAF is: a campy horror game. And I’m looking forward to see where they take it next!
Also, if I hear one more person complain about the “Building a Fort” scene in the movie, I will gnaw your arm off. I’m happy we actually got to see the ghost children ACTING LIKE GOD DAMN CHILDREN!

Be honest: what do you think of coquette girls?
um what? im gonna assume this is cause my post about coquette users misusing the ethel cain tag? i kinda put my thoughts in the tag of that post.
Tumblr media
the aesthetic is kinda based in this tragic victim persona that is not really healthy. i mean these are some of the first posts when looking up the tag.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
not only that but there is also an issue of racism and a promotion of disordered eating with most every pic being a skinny pale white woman and that being propped up as the ideal hyper feminine woman. excluding many women from what is deemed beautiful. not making a comment about any specific woman, i'm just saying thin being equal to cool/beautiful in any aesthetic is dangerous and white women being seen as the ideal for beauty is awful for the obvious reason that it alienates and dehumanizes woc.
finally i take issue with the way the aesthetic treats the book lolita and the character delores. tags such as this are disgusting in my opinion especially when on posts with close up photos of chests, lips and thighs. the view of delores as a cunning seductress sex symbol is both disgusting and dangerous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it took me like five minuets to find all these screenshots. these are at the forefront of the aesthetic. like i don't really think that every woman or girl who associates with the coquette aesthetic is this evil villain or whatever but i think it is important to understand what this aesthetic represents before identifying with it.

People don't seem to realise that sexual and other social things are also social constructs, its not just romance thats a social construct. So much of existence IS a social construct by design because literally a lot of things are really the ideas we've built around things, that doesn't make it less real but if you call romance a construct, for fucks sake, don't assume that things like sexual stuff and friendship and family, etc. are somehow not also social constructs or are somehow "biologically" present !! Just because you feel like your involvement in sex and other nonromantic things is "biological" doesn't make that the truth, and its bioessentialist to pretend otherwise.
Just because you feel people can't "convincingly" define romance in a way that's sufficiently distinct from other things to your liking, doesn't make it the ONLY interpersonal emotion and action that is socially constructed !! Im allosexual, arospec, and atertiary, and trust me, literally all forms of social emotions and relationships etc. are socially constructed. Its not just romance (which, yes, can count as social because surprise! it involves interaction or perception of other people !!) , and not everyone actually has a social drive or a sex drive, for example, so its not like those things are "universal" or a "biological reality of being human" to begin with.
Also, there are biological components to literally ALL emotions and relationship types because how the brain and body works IS biology. I just mean to say that these are categorised and named and expounded upon as social constructs but obviously, will have biological components merely because how the brain and body processes emotions and interactions IS technically part of biology - and varies for different people. If you think only sex actually involves bodies think again, because there is sometimes still touch involved in other relationship types (and sexual actions don't always involve touch to begin with) and beyond that, literally every emotion causes effects in the body because thats just how brains work.

Saw someone say that Klapollo is poor man's Narumitsu and I have A Lot Of Things to say about that. First off, Klapollo's dynamic is in no way comparable to Narumitsu, each ship has their own unique value and merit to them. You have these two guys who used to be childhood best friends until the other got adopted by his father's murder and had to leave for Germany and when Phoenix saw his face again, he learned that he had become a prosecutor, when he wanted to be a defense attorney like his father. His demeanor had also changed, gone was the Edgeworth who stood up for him in the class trial, he seemingly became a man who would do anything to win a case. And so Phoenix dropped everything he had planned for his life to become a defense attorney JUST SO HE CAN TALK TO THE MAN AGAIN. Now let me remind you that Edgeworth spended most of his life thinking that he had killed his father in that elevator, here comes Phoenix when Edgeworth got framed for murder. He reveals the truth to Edgeworth, that he hadn't killed his father, the real murderer was the one who had taught him everything he knew, who took him under his wing and acted as a guardian for him (a terrible one for sure though). He is able to take off this guilt that Edgeworth has been letting cosume him for all these years. He is able to deliver closure to Edgeworth's trauma.
It's also worth noting that Edgeworth has a customized chessboard that has the pieces look like him and Phoenix. Also we musn't forget "You've saddled me with... unnecessary feelings".
Now Klapollo? Sure they share some similarities to Narumitsu but the appeal is different. For you see, here is this lawyer who was a prodigy in school and he's also a world-renowned rockstar, here's this Guy who is a fan of Phoenix Wright and got into law as he was inspired by him. Klavier sees this average-looking man and goes "I've never felt this way with a man before~", Phoenix and Edgeworth would never be able to have done that, nah man everything these motherfuckers do together has to be dramatic as shit (sure you've got comedic moments here and there but these two are so angsty istg). The thing with Klapollo is that unlike Narumitsu, they are actually able to maintain a friendly relationship before the big climax of the games. Klavier is able to act professional (sorry Edgeworth but um... yeah) towards Apollo and doesn't go out of his way to antagonize him. You see, one of the main appeals for this ship is that Klavier twirls his hair and daydreams about this Some Guy who is the most Some Guy to ever live and probably takes pride in that (of course he has a shounen anime protagonist backstory but we'll get to that in a bit). And now we reach the part where we learn more about Apollo, and how you can draw parallels to Klavier's situation. Apollo just like Klavier has an estranged relationship with his brother, of course Apollo's brother had to be separated him due to Ga'ran's reign of terror and Nahyuta was forced to send defense attorneys to their deaths to keep his little sister safe, unlike Kristoph who did everything on purpose to achieve glory. Klapollo are not in any way comparable to Narumitsu, because Klapollo offers a healthy relationship with a solid foundation, a fun dynamic and some depth to it while Narumitsu is... I mean it's not unhealthy it's just that they're a fucking mess like they added way more extra steps in friends to enemies to lovers

I never wanted to get involved in fandom politics but I’ve seen so many posts blaming different characters and putting others on a pedestal that I feel the need to say something.
If you think that jc or wwx or any other characters are better than the rest, undeserving of what happened to them, and that they did no wrong and everyone else is to blame, then you’ve misunderstood the fundamental point of the entire story.
We all know that mdzs is a story about class, but there’s more to that than just Jin Guangyao and Mianmian. It doesn’t just stop at them, it applies to ever character in the entire novel, and applies to every situation they find themselves in. Mdzs is a novel about how situations shape people and affect their decisions, and by saying that one character is released from that blame while others are not is wrong.
As a reader, we know information that other characters do not, and since the novel is focused around wwx pov, then we know more information about his situation than the other characters do. We know he was tossed into the burial mounds, we know that he wanted to protect his family, we know that he loved Jiang Yanli as a sister and would never hurt her. But above all, we know everything Wen Qing and Wen Ning did to help him.
Except, the other characters don’t.
(And before I say the next bit, I would like to say I am not glorifying wwx’s actions or Jiang Cheng’s. They both did horrible things to each other)
In the novel, Jiang Cheng was pretty much unconscious for the entire time after he was rescued by Wen Qing and Wen Ning. The only time he did wake up was for mere seconds before he saw the Wen uniforms and was so afraid he was literally screaming before Wen Qing stabbed him with her needle and put him to sleep. By the time wwx woke him up, they were already travelling on a boat away from Yiling, and the Wen were nowhere in sight. In addition, Jiang Cheng didn’t know they brought back his cultivation. Jiang Cheng was unconscious, and could not remember much of what happened to him. All he remembers is waking up in a Wen stronghold, and then waking up outside of it. What reason did he have to believe that the Wen Qing and Wen Ning helped him at all?
On the contrary, wwx could not tell him any of this, because that would mean admitting to the golden core transfer. Wwx did not accept help, did not ask for help, but he was at a point in his life where he went to hell and back and was being blamed for it. To tell people he lost his core would 1) alert Jiang Cheng of the transfer and 2) would actually make him more of a target of the cultivation world. Unorthodox methods x2?? Absolutely not.
Lan Xichen did not see Jin Guangyao for what he was because he wanted to see someone better. That, and he was mourning one sworn brother and he did not want to mourn the other, or to even blame him for his death. Sure, he didn’t see any of the clues, but he didn’t want to see them, and that doesn’t make him a bad person.
I could go on and on about every single aspect of each characters situations and how that affected their actions (and I might in a reblog) but this post is getting long.
The point is this: Do not rise your favourite characters to pedestals and do not incessantly blame others for their mistakes. Each character has their own motivations, fear, and was each stuck in a situation that forced them to make bad decisions.
EDIT: It has come to my attention that Jiang Cheng was, in fact, aware of what Wen Qing and Wen Ning did for him prior to wwx’s death. So, I was incorrect in that regard.
However, Jiang Cheng was under great scrutiny by the cultivation sects, had just rebuilt Lotus Pier and its reputation, and then suffered the blow of wwx leaving. I do believe that his actions were a result of all that pressure being put on him.

one thing i love about elizabeth zott's character development is that even as she grows into herself as a woman and a mother, her grief stays with her. even as she builds herself a life and family, and once her home is full of love and happiness, her grief is still there - the show even leans into the ghost of calvin following her through the years. she will never forget him, she will never stop loving him, and that's okay!! the story tells you it's alright to never let go!! as long as you let the memory of the ones you've loved push you forwards instead of holding you down, what's the issue with keeping them alive inside your heart??
in an age where we're constantly getting told to move on, that the only way to grow is to resolve every single conflict you may have inside you, a story where "negative" feelings are an essential part of a character's journey feels... nice

This would ruin me.
I've said this before but I'm saying it again. Turning them human, just for them to live like 30 years together and die is the "bury your gays" trope.
If you don't know - it's very common in queer representation for one or both characters to die. Think brokeback mountain. This link explains it better (although I just skimmed it).
In this specific case, in my opinion, turning these supernatural beings who have been in love since the universe was created but never allowed to BE in love openly, and not letting them love each other FOREVER - plummeting towards old age and death - is killing them, effectively.
I want to live the rest of MY life with the thought that aziraphale and crowley are "out there" (in fiction) happy and in love. I want to imagine them living through and avoiding every major historical event we experience in the future.
I want their love to live on. If other queer characters die, they live.
not to be dramatic but if good omens finishes with aziraphale and crowley together but human I’ll be genuinely devastated
They’ve spent the entity of human history (and sometime before!) not being able to act on or articulate their feelings, they’re immortal beings and the idea of their love and retirement getting to be a footnote of that story would make me so sad. Just a couple of years at the cottage isn’t enough I’m sorry

Alright, I've been around here and in and out of fandom for quite a while now, I've been a lurker most of my online life and never engaged much but this morning I woke up with opinions and I'm not even sure that anyone will read this but i had to put it out there for the world to (maybe) see. So, let's get to it and talk about the importance of safe sex in fanfiction.
I used to not think much about the absence of some kind of protection in the majority of fics dealing with sex but as I get older that's becoming more and more of an issue for me when reading and now it can take me right out of a story.
The weird thing is that I'm sure we'd all agree on the importance of safe sex if asked about it so why isn't it more common in fics?
I can already hear people arguing that it's not sexy or that it kills the mood. You know what does kill the mood? STDs. I don't care that your characters are desperate for each other, being safe is more important than getting your dick wet. And I promise that making your characters ask for a condom won't make them spontaneously combust. So unless your characters live in a universe where STDs don't exist, the matter should be brought up. Unless your characters are in a steady relationship and got tested before ditching protection, the matter should be brought up. And if you're making your characters behave dangerously on purpose it should be said explicitly, don't let people believe that protection is not important. It's not shameful to want to be safe! Sure it can be a bit embarrassing to talk about it but it'll take a minute. And it can't be more embarrassing than having your private bits out and being vulnerable in front of someone else, even more so if it's someone you barely know!
And since I digress let me add that it also applies to oral sex. You don't have to put your dick and/or your mouth on anything to actually have sex AND to have a good time. People have hands, they're right there for us to use! And you really want to put something in a hole? You have something great that's on you all the time - fingers.
Alright, back to the point.
Why am I making such a big deal out of this? Because I can hear other people arguing - it's fiction, people know it's not real. I wish it were as simple as that but some people will read what you wrote and think that's actually how sex works. You think that's stupid? Right, how many people think porn is a real depiction of sex and takes it as an example? You know the answer is way too much! We all are influenced by what we see in medias. You expect me to believe that we didn't all think that what we saw in movies was how love and sex worked? Please. And do you know how many movies with sex scenes mention safe sex? Not a lot. And that's to not say none. And in a world where sex ed is more and more threatened everyday the representation of a healthy and safe sexuality in fiction is even more important, because at this rate fiction will soon be the only source of information on sex accessible to people. But i digress again.
So yes, I'd go as far as to say that writers, (but this applies to everyone really) have some kind of responsibility here because there will always be some scared queer teenager somewhere that will stumble upon your work and take it at face value and they won't have any other examples available to think critically about it.
You think I'm exaggerating, right? Okay, let's be honest here, I started reading fics when I was fifteen - yes, you read that right, fifteen. I was that lonely and scared queer teenager who stumbled upon some smut by accident with no clue as to what a healthy and safe sex life looked like except for what I'd seen on tv.
Also yes, I totally agree with you that minors should not read your smut just as they should not have access to porn, but they do because teenagers have always found ways to get access to things that were forbidden to them, and they always will. So the only thing we can do is to make sure that we give them good examples.

Scary Sunset.
I'm concepting things way outta order in this story, but I'm sure you can piece things together. Context is for a storybeat where, after defeating and capturing Adagio (thus having all three sirens in her possession), Sunset enacts her revenge plot to release the sirens on Canterlot as Thea discovers she's been manipulated. In a confrontation, the two scuffle and fight over the siren orbs while Sunset struggles with her conflicting wants and emotions.

New chapter of a fanfic up on my screen and ready to read
Leaves the room to get a snack
Realises I just skimmed the first paragraph because I was so distracted by the food i was shoveling into my mouth
Thinking damn I fucking love trifle
Four or so lines ignored and my eye just falls on a line of dialogue.
Knowing it's Optimus Prime from the way it's phrased.
I missed the part where it said Optimus approached and then went to a new line because a line of dialogue was being written.
KNOWING IT'S OPTIMUS PRIME FROM THE WAY IT IS PHRASED.
I don't know how other people quantify "good writing" aside from plot ideas and feelings evoked, but being able to write a character so well that coming out of a tasty food daze and knowing exactly who is speaking just from the word choice!!!!!!!

//You know how the pokemon world doesn't have animals (anymore), but still calls pokemon things like "the fox pokemon" or "the owl pokemon"? My headcanon for that is that those names are specific genuses the pokemon fall into, not actually just a specific animal. Like, how owls are called Strigiformes, but everyone just says owl instead. So in the world, people would look at pokemon like hoothoot and say, "Oh, it's an owl!" but referring to its genus, not so much its species. You understand?

i think its possible for most mythical creatures to have existed at some point, like the idea of a unicorn is soo crazy but deer and cattle exist. and like the kraken could have been a giant squid ya know. it may be a lame answer but i think many things existed just not to scale like word of mouth story telling made them closer to story than reality.
