Hello, and welcome!! Today is May 6th, the first day of the yearly PFP Art Contest, and also my 21st birthday!! To celebrate, I'm going to be hoisting an art contest with prizes to the winners!!

What is the PFP Art Contest?

The Profile Pic Art Contest, or the PFP Contest is an event where all you wonderful TMNT artists get the chance to draw me a new profile pic, and win prizes!! The winning art piece will be my new PFP for the full year until the next PFP Contest!

The PFP Contest will run from May 6th, through June 6th, and on June 7th, I'll announce the winner!!

How does this work, and how to participate?

A week ago, I had you all vote in a poll, deciding which turtle you'd all prefer. And this years winner is Donatello!!

From the start of the contest, to the end, you'll post your art, and tag me so I can reblog it, kind of like how a DTIYS works.

As this year's turtle is Donatello, that's who you'll all be drawing. The theme for this contest is reading, (as this blog is a fanfic blog) meaning, the turtle you choose to draw, from any of the three iterations (Rottmnt, TMNT 2012, & Mutant Mayhem/Tottmnt) MUST be reading!!!!

What are the rules?

You can only draw Donatello for this years contest. Doesn't matter the iteration (Rottmnt, TMNT 2012, or Mutant Mayhem/Tottmnt). And he must be drawn reading!! Doesn't matter what; a comic, a book, on the phone, but he HAS to be reading. This is a fanfic blog after all!!

2. Artwork MUST be square!! Otherwise I can't use it!! Size doesn't matter as much, as tumblr seems to let me use any image I'd like. But it has to be square.

3. Has to be a canon iteration turtle. No fan iterations. As much as I'd love that, lets keep it to only canon to keep it fair. Future turtles, and design headcanons are allowed though!!

4. You may submit up to three pieces!! One per iteration!

5. No NSFW, no suggestive art, and no T-cest!!

6. No AI art, EVER. That will get you banned from not just the contest, but from my blog. We love and respect hardworking artists here!! <3

Welcome to the signups for the Hatchetfield High Yearbook Project

Rules:

Individual Character artists will pick the name (or only last name) for their character if their character doesn’t have one, and writers will go along with it for their articles/interviews. (unless an actor or the Langs reveal the canon names of a previously unnamed character during the process of this project)

All art and writing must be original, not AI-generated or made by anyone else (commission, picrew, etc.) 

All art and writing must be digital, it just looks more uniform. (If you need help digitalizing a traditional sketch, I can help with that!) 

Each artist will draw the characters in their piece as they normally draw them, I will clarify which characters are which along with crediting each artist in captions below the photo) 

No infighting, be respectful and agree to disagree in the discord server if an argument arises over fandom stuff. It’s not that big of a deal </3 (Note - If enough trouble is caused, you may be removed from the project and your piece may be replaced)

For now, the due date for all art and writing is March 20th. (Note: This is subject to change. If you are unable to submit your piece at the deadline, contact me, or one of the moderators if I am unreachable, as soon as possible)

A little bit about the Project:

It will be free, both to participate in and consume!

We'll have a discord server for project organization, with other general and fandom related channels for fun in the meantime.

When it is finished, I will roll it out as both a flipbook AND a slideshow, as the slide show will be of a higher/clearer quality than the flipbook program I use.

it will be modeled similarly to the Ride the Cyclone yearbook project, but without all the little info per character, as Hatchetfield High is a much bigger school than St. Cassian. There will still, however, be senior quotes!

For signature pages, everyone who participates will sign a transparent image with their name and/or a little quote/doodle, just like you would sign an actual yearbook in high school. Individual character artists will also sign a separate transparent image as their character, unless their character is an alumni, and I will arrange them on their own pages just like the signature pages of the Ride the Cyclone yearbook project linked above.

You may apply to be both an artist and a writer, but please tell me which you would prefer to be in the forms.

Chapter 58 Welp Posting

Hello kind void. Short (for me) yap this time... it's mostly just pain this chapter, after all. So much pain.

Very rough TL of the editor's notes:

First page: 漆羽の命滅契約は一体…? [Uruha no meimetsu keiyaku ha ittai...?!, What in the world happened to Uruha's lifelong contract...!?] Last page: 信念のもと漆羽を殺めた座村を前に… [Shinen no moto Uruha wo ayameta Samura wo maeni..., Standing in front of Samura, who killed Uruha due to his conviction...] Google Translate or DeepL can probably do better than me on this one, so go ahead and copy/paste that text into one of those instead for a better idea. Just note that 漆羽 (Uruha) usually gets auto-translated to "Urushiba" and 座村 (Samura) to "Zamura".

Pregame Mini Meta Rant: If I hear a SINGLE complaint about how many panels were reused this chapter Imma get heated. Yeah, there's been a lot of copy-crop-paste stuff going on in the past two weeks. This chapter alone re-used Hakuri's exhausted seal pose four times. But the major scenes still hit hard as fuck and the new art is holding up. Let the author do what it takes to avoid burnout and health issues just as his series is getting the major promotion treatment, okay? Dude's had to do a lot of extra work recently with the cover and colour pages in addition to the usual volume redraws and accompanying filler sketches/doodles.

These chapters were probably being written and drawn about the same time as the extra materials. It's not like the author starts drawing on Monday and sends the chapter out by Friday so it can be published Sunday- they're finished weeks in advance before they're released. I recommend checking out a short manga called The Right Way to Make JUMP! by Takeshi Sakurai if the practical details of getting manga out to thousands of readers in both print & digital simultaneously every week seem interesting!

Uruha vs. Samura

I interrupt this ramble before it even begins to do a little celebratory dance. I got most of what I yapped about last chapter right for once! Yay! ヾ(⌐■_■)ノ♪ I won't have to recap the Samura motivation/mindset yap with the new information! (This will probably never happen again.)

Anyway...

Let's start with this because fuck it was so cool and sad.

I love how every character in this manga holds fast to their convictions, man. But I didn't expect Samura to be so cold about killing his former apprentice y'know?! Not even a hint of remorse from this guy. Between this and the subdued greeting Uruha gave him, the lack of warmth in their dialogue together... I wonder if they had a positive relationship. Uruha certainly respected Samura's skills but the contrast between how he thinks about Kunishige and the man who presumably taught him everything he knows about fighting is striking, isn't it? He was pretty unemotional about having to duel his master to the death despite being such an emotive guy. Yet now we'll probably never know... (sigh).

Here's something I missed on my first read: Samura didn't use Tobimune to face Uruha; he was just the quicker draw with a regular katana.

His sword is closer to being sheathed, while Uruha's sword is still farther out.

In case anyone still wants to believe that Uruha is alive or can come back somehow after this... more power to you. The Sojo copers can probably give you some tips if you need them. But there is one small smidgen of comfort to be had, if one wants to interpret it as such.

Not using Tobimune can be read as respecting Uruha's determination and facing him on equal footing. I know he unnecessarily double-tapped Uruha when he was laying on the ground- he didn't need to slash the guy again with Tobimune to make the kill. I get it, the Enchanted Blades are tools of death. Just let me have this. I need it.

Uruha deserved better. He deserve to live, dammit. I didn't get nearly enough of him. But what a way to go. Standing up for what you believe, your dead (boy)friend's last words telling you to live no matter what running through your head. Fighting for your life to honor his wish even though it's a completely lost cause... fuck what a tragic character. He was such a passionate guy despite the losses he suffered. Uruha, man... I really wanted to spend more time with him, but I guess all we'll get of him are flashbacks about him from other people or during scenes recounting what happened in the war.

The worst part of saying goodbye is that it felt like we had so much more to see and learn about him. His story's incomplete but it's over all the same. That's what hurts most when authors kill these characters- the sense of real loss because of all the loose ends. Anything we learn about him will be retroactive for context. No more growth, no more silly faces... damn you Samura...! Fuck this author makes good villains in a short span of time.

Whatever incident was covered up 18 years ago has to be incredibly awful to drive Samura to become an avenger for the truth. I'm talking "establishing a whole fucking international court system to process it for over a decade" levels of bad. Which it may well be, if this flashback from Sojo's PoV in chapter 8 remains unchanged when we revisit it for context:

Yeah I'm banking on that mystery kid being Magatsumi's current wielder. Whether he was a child soldier or picked up the sword by accident somehow, this might be the clue to The Incident that turned Samura against his allies. The point about how anyone can use the Enchanted Blades is made repeatedly during and after the Sojo arc- why not a child? Covering up a massacre like that would be in a lot of people's interests.

Unfounded spitball theories aside, now that Hakuri and Chihiro are both clued in that some real bad shit went down, we can expect to learn more about it. Hopefully sooner rather than later because I'll definitely be judging the shit outta Samura based on how awful it is. I'm very interested in his moral dilemma but I've got unreasonably high standards as to what kind of event could drive someone to do something so awful (in fiction, at least). IRL people are messy, but fiction demands justification. And the way this incident is being hyped up makes me believe it's different from the other horrors of war sinking in and slowly driving someone to resent everything they did for the cause. Whatever the Bearers and the Kamunabi covered up is going to cast them all -Kunishige included- in an extremely unflattering light.

Burnout

He just looks so cute being carried like that even though he's so exhausted and roughed up…

... Yeah. Poor Hakuri.

I won't take up as much space here as I want to yapping about him because most of it's just retreads of things I've been saying for weeks already. But man. Man.

This guy awoke to his powers, killed his dad and brothers, put an end to his family's cruelty, saved a bunch of lives at great risk to himself, passed out, and woke up to try and do this crazy mission with Chihiro all in just over 24 hours. He's so fried he fell asleep while being carried piggy-back and can't even move any more! But he's still kicking himself for not summoning Kumeyuri for Uruha when he had enough adrenaline to sort of stand up on his own. Never mind the brain haemorrhage- he's got lives to save. Ms. Makizumi's words about pushing himself too hard being dangerous just go in one ear and out the other. These people want him to care about himself for the mission and because he deserves it but he just refuses to take it to heart...

Then the person he promised to protect is killed in front of him right after he made it his life's mission to prevent exactly this sort of scenario.

Fuck.

Can't even turn this into a ship moment I'm so bent out of shape. Someone strip me of my fudanshi creds.

It looks like Hakuri did summon Chihiro in a panic after all- he couldn't even call out to Uruha so reaching for Chihiro instead was his first instinct. He just wasn't fast enough because his body and mind are on the brink of totally shutting down. If he's truly unable to use sorcery again after finally gaining his own strength at long last... oh, that will hurt so bad. I'm not ready for how hard Hakuri's going to be on himself when he eventually wakes up despite doing his very best.

Hakuri's gonna be out of commission for sure after this event.

I'm close to 100% positive he'll temporarily lose his powers now. If it comes to be, then Kagurabachi will have passed my bullshit "don't say they'll die if the consequences don't match up to the risk" test. Being paralyzed and powerless for a while is good enough to convince me that death really was a possible outcome. See, it's really that easy. Totally not unfair and arbitrary.

Regardless, there's a lot of suffering ahead for Chihiro and Hakuri. Not only did all of this shit go down the day right after the Rakuzaichi, but there's still whatever the blood test will reveal hanging out there... the political and practical price of this failure with the Kamunabi... processing the guilt of not being able to save a life... coming to terms with how much they don't know... so much has happened to them in a short 24-ish hours, huh? And neither of them have anything good to look forward to in the short-term.

I gotta wonder what Hakuri will do this arc if he's literally unable to move for a while. His PoV gave us the info that there was a specific incident that was covered up, but that doesn't mean he'll be involved in that plot line. But let's save that stress for another time- gotta see how badly he fucked himself up and how things shake out between Chihiro and Samura first.

Chihiro vs. Samura

(Ch. 50) A long-awaited reunion.

What will go down next week? I'm sure as hell not gonna try to guess. Could be anything from casual conversation to an actual skirmish. At least one thing will definitely not happen though.

Neither Chihiro nor Samura are dying here. Chihiro cannot die until the last fight in the series is finished, so that's out (boo joyless nerd take no fun booooooo). Samura's simply too strong to go down to an exhausted Chihiro and we still have to learn the history behind his motives. So he's gonna stick around for a bit longer to cause trouble. Wouldn't be surprised if he's the arc boss! Hiruhiko's got his own training arc ahead of him and all (and some arms to reattach), so he'll be more of a recurring villain than someone to defeat as a character growth moment for now. It's looking like Samura vs. Chihiro for the foreseeable future IMO.

If I can reveal a selfish hope, I want Samura facepalming Chihiro and feeling the scar to be the means of getting insight on how he feels about Chihiro's situation. Samura's probably the one who tipped off the Hishaku about Kunishige's location thanks to accidentally finding out when Momma Shiba took Chihiro to the local festival. Oh boy, if Chihiro learns that Samura was the one that sold him and his dad out... that would be some incredibly potent angst. His hero, a monster? Say it ain't so. Would have told you sooner if I could, Chihiro.

I feel confident in thinking that Samura is basically Bad End Chihiro now. He's been tormented by guilt for nearly two decades and has decided to do everything himself. He'll kill his former comrades and the Hishaku or go down swinging- and kill himself if he actually succeeds. He's on a doomed mission to scorch the earth and take out as much evil as he can. All scum go to hell! Including the guy who's so mired in grief that he does a lot of murder to cope. Those scars of his don't look like tear tracks in some shots for nothin'. (Wait, wasn't I talking about Chihiro for a bit there?)

Chihiro's well on his way to following Samura's path already... he's not the type to kill his comrades, but he's definitely got the "guilty sinning avenger" thing going on strong. So if Samura is Chihiro's "Bad End", what will he force Chihiro to realize? Every major foe reflects a part of Chihiro back at himself and forces him to answer difficult questions, after all. Sojo- forced him to accept that there are multiple ways to interpret and use his dad's legacy

Kyora- forced him to look at his own devotion to his dad's legacy and admit he doesn't know as much as he needs to

Hiruhiko (round 1)- forced him to admit that he thinks of himself as a monster for the lengths he's willing to go to

As for Samura, I think it'll be along the lines of "is it necessary or justifiable to sin and/or commit oneself hell for the sake of a cause?". Maybe "can I be redeemed at all?" (or if redemption is even necessary in the first place). Legitimately can't wait to see what goes down between them next week to get more clues! God I love this manga so much. I haven't been so consistently engaged week to week like this in ages.

...One last thought. This is probably looking too far ahead as an angst merchant and I was rightly rebuked for mentioning it. I should know better than to share the worthless depressing bullshit that goes on in my head. But these posts are supposed to just be some yaps into an ambivalent abyss so... sorry, kind internet void, but you get some of my depresso espresso.

With all the deliberate parallels drawn between Samura->Chihiro and Uruha->Hakuri, I wouldn't be surprised if our favourite protagonist/deuteragonist pair has the same exchange later down the line. Definitely not under similar circumstances! I can imagine scenarios where Chihiro is trying to kill Hakuri but they're so far removed from canon that they make absolutely zero sense.

But there could well be a time where Chihiro decides to leave because he really does need to bear this burden alone and Hakuri tries to call him out on the ridiculousness of that mindset. I think it would be a happier result for Chihiro and Hakuri compared to Samura and Uruha if only because Chihiro isn't as far gone as the blind traitor rat is. But yeah I'm just sticking that in my back pocket to see if it manifests in the future.

Time to write some hurt/comfort and hope canon eases up on the pain soon. It's either that or setting up a bingo sheet with all the angst scenarios I've got written down in my drafts and notes... I choose the one that I can create my own happy ending for. Until next time, dear void.

Silent Hill 2 commentary: Wood Side Apartments (5)

PREVIOUSLY ON: Eddie's introduction; a swimming pool full of lying figures and an apartment full of mannequins; "IF WE'RE DYING IT'S AT LEAST GONNA BE SOMEWHERE RESPECTABLE!"; canned juice.

Spoiler policy: Just about anything but That One Big Thing near the end of the game, particularly information about characters, their motives, and their dynamics. The game’s eight endings may also be discussed. Content notes are below the cut.

Content notes: For this post, we have discussions or mentions (not visual depictions) of terminal illness and infertility.

The cutscene near the end of the video shows implied sexual violence, and I discuss how this plays out in both the original game and the remake, with a link to the more graphic version. The scene itself is an homage to Blue Velvet, which has explicit sexual violence, but I only discuss that here in text, not the video, and without describing any of it.

2:26:30: A long journey back through the courtyard and to Apartment 107. We pick up the Woman coin on the way. 

Did not mention: Interestingly, she's blindfolded—usually I'd think of Justice, and we do see a blindfolded Justice statue in Toluca Prison. In the coin puzzle context, I wonder if this symbolizes her accidentally running into the snake—she didn't see it. 

2:29:45: Okay, lots to see in Apartment 107, mostly themed around the idea that James and Mary had wanted to have children (V2 31:20). Laura the Stepper of Hands, by the way, is an orphan who developed a close relationship with Mary in the hospital; she knows who James is, but she doesn't seem to expect that James would know her. Mary wanted to adopt Laura—did James not ever know any of this, or he did but the amnesia won't let him remember? That's the question with a lot of things. Given how estranged James and Mary were by the end of her illness, I have to think he wouldn't have known, and that maybe Mary's connection with Laura was genuine, of course, but also partly a replacement for the emotional support her husband wasn't giving her.

Sheet music for Schumann's "Einsame Blumen," and Ian has a lot to say about the historical background of the Schumanns as a couple. (Here's a performance, if you'd like to hear it.) The title means "Lonely Flowers," which convinced me that flowers are in fact a Mary motif. Mary's full letter at the end of the game indicates how lonely she was in the hospital, but also implies that she blamed herself for lashing out and pushing the people she loved away.

Records that we also saw at Groovy Music: "Locket" (a memento that can hold a photo, much the way James carries a picture of Mary around) and "FAKE" (the Silent Hill we're experiencing is not "real"). There are records broken into pieces as well—the one on the floor could stand for a family of three (James, Mary, and Laura), while the one that's broken into a half and then one smaller piece, the rest missing, could stand for James and Laura, who leave Silent Hill together in one of the endings.

107 was the location of the canned juice in the original game; I'd like to think that Bloober Team put all of this here so that OG fans who made a beeline here would have something interesting to see. 

2:37:30: "I feel for Laura... she's such a brat! I won't lie to you, she's such a little shit."

2:38:30: Here we are, at last: Three Bright Coins in the Five Holes Be. Again, the coin puzzle might be my favorite, and I like the clue writing best on Standard. You'll work through the sequence of "man approaches woman, woman flees, woman runs into snake, man stands before woman's grave," and then the puzzle will ask you: Who was responsible for her death ("for what fate had in store")? Any answer will work. But each one gives you points towards a different ending: Snake for "Leave," Man for "In Water," and Woman for "Maria." (Here's a source for that, as well as the other versions of the clues.)

People say you should really just go with your gut on a first playthrough and see what ending your natural behavior gets you; my personal answer to the question is the Man, which is also what I need to choose this time. I interpret the Man not as James, but as Mary's illness—talk about it later, etc.

2:44:00: Apartment 201, our final destination. I give some content warnings at this point, but let's move them a few paragraphs to the cutscene writeup a few minutes from now. In the meantime, you'll recall that I said that the "Valentine's Day" Strange Photo and matching bouquet connect Apartment 102 to this one. Here's the other half of that equation: I believe that this apartment is either partially or entirely James and Mary's home, manifested here by Silent Hill. And because James has this partial amnesia that set in right after Mary died, he doesn't recognize what he's looking at. But what I do walk him around and look at includes:

Mary's tiny sick room, which we see in an important cutscene in the "Leave" ending. I stay quiet so you can hear a gasp—Mary's last breath, which you'll hear at odd times throughout the game.

Flower-themed paintings and fabrics 

Again, the bouquet that matches the Strange Photo from 102

Two bird pictures in the bathroom, one a cardinal (the classic red cardinals you think of are the males) to give them a "his and hers" vibe; the other one is shaped very much like the bird in the "how to get Maria's ending" book, and Maria very much wants to take Mary's place. 

After I recorded the second and third videos, I realized that the room with the TV is the same room from the Strange Photo, and added it to the text post (V2 28:00).

In that room, a painting of a deer (innocence and vulnerability), and the same little lighthouse painting we saw in a Wood Side apartment, continuing the theme of Mary and guiding lights

An old-fashioned radio that we'll see again as a puzzle in Blue Creek, continuing the theme that "music brings you back"

A Mary's Time of Death clock (look closely at it if you don't remember the exact time)

THE flowered bedsheet I kept talking about, which is "currently in James' car" (we'll talk about it later)

Three paintings of a ship at sea, which I read as a sequence of James and Mary's marriage deteriorating, continuing the association of James with water

A handkerchief with orange blossoms on it—a flower associated with brides and weddings, so I'll go with various redditors' idea that it's a wedding handkerchief, sure. 

2:51:00: I had to talk around this a bit, but there's some violent sexual imagery in this next scene. It's not what it looks like; it's just Pyramid Head struggling to subdue a mannequin, but it's been framed and half-hidden in such a way that you're meant to sort of recoil and say, "Is he... what the hell am I looking at?" The original game's scene was more visible and more... fetishized in a way I can't quite put my finger on (I discuss this a bit more on the video). Remember the Takayoshi Sato quote I brought in a few posts ago? In this video, I read a lightly paraphrased version aloud after this scene, but here's the original again:

"Psychological horror has to shake human's heart deeply. Shaking people's heart deeply means uncover people's core emotion and their core motivation for life. Everybody is thinking and concerning about sex and death. Everything. If we want to scare, shake, or touch the users or spectators, then we have to think about sex and death deeply. To make like a death scene, somebody died or monsters died, we tried to mix erotic essence. This is kind of a visual and a core concept."

So what happens is, James is looking at this handkerchief he ought to remember, and suddenly Pyramid Head bursts in, struggling with two mannequins, and James has to hide in a closet with slatted double doors (the better to peer out in terror). At some point, Pyramid Head realizes James is there, and they stare each other down through the doors, insofar as an otherworldly being covered by a cast-iron helmet can stare at anything, until James finally breaks and starts shooting. Unsurprisingly, bullets do nothing. After a few moments of not reacting, Pyramid Head writhes in a very strange, jerky way, then grabs a dead mannequin and leaves.

Did not mention: James' actor Luke Roberts talks a little about doing the motion capture for this scene with a second actor playing Pyramid Head. Which, now that I think about it—I wonder who did the motion capture for the three basic monsters? 

Did not mention: This cutscene is inspired by two scenes involving a closet in David Lynch's Blue Velvet—

—which I did not immediately notice because I bailed on that movie twenty years ago after watching one (1) hour of it. Nothing terrible was even happening at the time, but I was watching it in the pitch dark sometime after midnight, and the tension was so nerve-wracking that I just couldn't handle it anymore. Point being, though, that movie is famous for how disturbing... well, everything is, but especially the sexual and/or assault scenes, so if you're wondering What the Hell Is Going On, and then you recognize that this is a Blue Velvet homage, you're going to bring that subtext to the table yourself without the game even having to go there.

Bonus fact: David Lynch passed away this past January; at the Oscars this month, Isabella Rossellini wore a blue velvet gown in his honor.

2:58:00: In terms of the game, Pyramid Head is here to serve as a kind of psychopomp (IMO), leading James into the Otherworld, because James has so little self-preservation that he thinks following Pyramid Head is a terrific idea. And that's what we're going to do now; James is going to open that incongruous red door in the kitchenette and step over, across a very slim alley two stories up, from Wood Side to Blue Creek. At that point, you get the achievement "Otherworldly."

Everything is fucked. Everything is nasty and rusty and decrepit. It's the physical embodiment of "the vibes are rancid." (General content warning: all Otherworld toilets are heinous, always.) The floor plan of this apartment somewhat mirrors the one James just left; the slatted doors of the closet have been slashed through by a VERY LARGE blade, so in some other dimension, Pyramid Head was extremely displeased by getting shot in the face.

So now, we're going to make our way through Blue Creek Apartments to a room with a clock puzzle, and we'll be able to save there (maybe) and stop for the day. We learn a new skill: breaking through "weak walls," cracked areas that are marked with White Cloth™ and are exactly James-shaped. In the combined 206 and 204 units, I do a pretty good job of shooting an exploding lying figure (yeah, this is new) from across the apartment, but I'm so ragged after recording for three hours that I absolutely get my ass kicked by a mannequin ("NO NO DON'T PUNCH ME IN THE FACE I'M SO TIRED"). 

I said I'd screenshot and search this painting—

—but nothing exact came up. Still looks Francis Bacon-ish to me, though. 

3:08:00: We pass the moth room that I mentioned back on (Thomas) Harris Street, and then, finally, we arrive at the clock puzzle, the organizing principle of the Blue Creek Apartments level. Now, if I asked you for a significant time, here in a Silent Hill 2 context, what would you come up with? If you've noticed that I relentlessly pointed out that every single clock has been set to Mary's time of death, you know the answer to this puzzle. However, you still have to search the building for the clock hands themselves, and that's what we'll spend the fourth video doing. 

Our final destination will be a rematch with Pyramid Head—I'll have to fight him for a 14th time, at minimum. And, by the way—I've since realized that shooting him in the head does no damage, just like we saw a few minutes ago (apparently I thought just hurting his feelings would be sufficient), and I have to revise my strategy.

This is an introduction post explaining this project and hopefully garnering some attention!

🥚 What's this about?

This is a fanzine by Shane fans, for Shane fans. It's a fan project to appreciate this character, his story, and his growth, and how much it means to a lot of us who have been through similar things.

🥚 How will this work?

Like most other zines! The project will begin on a certain date, and artists and writers will have several months to complete a piece of their choosing for the fanzine. We will use discord to communicate, schedule, and smooth out any issues.

🥚 When is the projected release?

I think aiming for spring 2024 would be nice! It'd be nice to release the zine around when Shane's birthday would be.

🥚Will this be a paid zine?

This is a charity zine to raise money for the mental health charity Samaritans! Samaritans is a charity that operates free and confidential phone lines for people to reach out and talk to someone whenever they're having a difficult time. They provide a listening service for those who may be suffering from suicidal thoughts or otherwise unpleasant feelings. Donations will be raised via ko-fi during a certain fundraising period and after that's over, the zine will go free to download.

🥚What format is this zine in?

The zine will be formatted to A4 paper size, HOWEVER this zine will only run digitally and will not have a print release as things stand. (Mod honestly can't afford a print release as cool as that would be...)

🥚Who can join?

Almost anyone can join! There is no requirement on skill, online following, previous zine experience etc. If this is your first zine, that's awesome! We welcome you with open arms. This is a zine for anyone who has ever struggled with their mental health, and has felt comforted by a certain stardew valley character. I do require that contributors be at least 13+. Not only would it be against discord terms of service to have under 13s on the platform, but mod here, as a fully grown adult, would also be uncomfortable with it - sorry!

🥚Are there any other rules right now?

There are a few! Let's list them, and please read carefully.

We have a zero-tolerance policy for racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia, and anything else that falls into similar categories. ZERO. This is non-negotiable. This is a safe space and anyone displaying any of the above will be kicked off the project.

That said, proship, comship, darkship etc are not welcome on this zine. This is a safe space for everyone, including minors, survivors, and everyone else.

This is a SFW zine. There will be no NSFW art or writing included.

Every artist and writer is free to depict Shane as they like. If they choose to depict him as trans, POC, mlm, or anything else for the sake of representation, that is their choice and you must respect it. See the first bullet point about zero tolerance.

Ableism also extends to bigotry toward those suffering with mental illness, and addicts. We are trying to promote empathy and acceptance. Ableist comments will be warned (e.g. complaining about Shane's room being messy).

QSMP Animatics - Movie night exists because of you guys!! Sometimes you all make me want to sob violently or laugh till I can't breathe. The differences in each video is so fun to see. The effort in each one is just beautiful too, animatics are NOT easy.

QSMP Editors - The fact that people can take a cube game and turn into epic/sad/cute edits with a few clips, transitions, and audios astounds me. You guys are so cool and I love seeing them. Also the fanart edits are so sick, finding the best ones to match.

QSMP Fan Video Creators - Stuff like the Federation Welcoming Workers Video, that one cucrucho cereal video, things like that. Quality is usually amazing and all the unique takes or camera work is epic. Idk what else fits in this genre but I just wanted to mention it.

QSMP RP Accounts - Seeing other people's takes on characters are so interesting and fun to see. RP is a skill I need to work on and it's done pretty well with these accounts. The amount of detail y'all can put is insane.

QSMP OC creators - Cringe culture is dead, I love seeing people make their little characters interact with eachother based on the QSMP. Keep it up and pls share it.

QSMP 3D Animators/Modelers - I never expirence more joy than when I see a 3D model of a qsmp rat spinning around. Also any 3D animators your dedication is insane. I tried learning 3D animation once and that was a STRUGGLE.

QSMP Vod savers/YT summaries -Actual lifesavers, there is no way I could've been apart of this community without them. Watching a few videos a day about what happened on the server makes it easier for me to actually do other things. Also that one person who made a QSMP2023 summary in UNDER 10 minutes, you are insane and did such a great job.

QSMP Accounts in Different Languages - QSMPBLR is heavily more English speaking than other languages, and when people main tag with post in different languages it makes me so happy. This was the point of the server, to let people post in whatever language they wanted. It's also fun for me to practice and try to translate it for myself.

If you'd like to, could you share with us Amie and/or Ori's thoughts on each of The Emailers? I imagine they have been Data Collecting pretty much instinctively on everybody, though I get the feeling the conclusions they draw from that data, or the data they prioritize/notice more differs quite a bit between them.

Absolutely sure. They both have seen every email sent by everyone since they both have access to modify things. (Amie LOVES to talk in tags when redirecting mails. Ori might have liked to do that long ago, but he doesn't really seek people out anymore)

Lobby - Amie LOVES Lobby. really looks at how they act very very closely. It's why he got upset when everyone wanted to mail ashley because LOBBY didn't want to. Also why he temporarily worried about if bringing Parry in was right. Lobby was the first one to agree to help him!

Ori is curious. That kind of kindness and optimism is often met with manipulation or underlying issues. He's not sure he believes they are Truly kind to this degree. Are they plotting? Are they truly kind? Do they want something? Is it fear?

Parry - AMIE LOVES PARRY! BEST FRIEND. First one to call him that! Gave him so much hope! People are good! People can be good. He'll do anything for them. He looks to them the MOST for his morals. Parry could tell him anything and it would automatically override what anyone else says.

Ori is so...so confused. There is a fearful kindness he wants to pick apart. What makes a human so afraid. What is this history. Who are you. What are you. WHY are you. Where is this blind trust in him? Haven't you been hurt so many times? Didn't you hear me when I said I did not regret a thing? I am Incapable of remorse. And yet....

Mushroom - FAMILY?! Amie thinks about that all the time. Someone who distrusted him, disregarded his intentions...and then turned to give him a new chance. To then call him family. Is this what it means to earn love? To understand eachother?

Ori has...not many thoughts on Mushroom yet. They are a curious thing to him, like all people are. The turn they did about Amie is interesting. People's opinions change so quickly, don't they...

Snail - Amie gets excited when seeing Snail. Second best friend! Silly snail! Parry's friend, his friend! Protect them at all costs. They are silly. would love to play games with them. Ori noted how much Snail likes Bo. People can care about a digital creature to this extent? How odd.

Like when he rejected one of their emails because he thought it would upset Parry more. Or when he told them to stay in their line (Protecting a threat from death? NOT GOOD. to him) You talk too much friend. He respects a lot of their words, but when it comes to Parry specifically? Oh he's ruffling and hissing at them. Ori is indifferent. to an extent. There's a lot of wise words in that mind. But said at times when it could be taken so wrong.

ART CONTEST!!! - Frieza and Frost’s Fashion Show!!

So, I’m very much burnt out from writing (at least from my big stories, I’ll probably still drop occasional oneshots) and am taking a small hiatus. But turns hiatus can be a bit boring. So how am I gonna change that?

By hosting a random art contest for fun!!

I thought this might be a fun little thing to drop. No idea how many participants they’ll actually be, but we’ll see 😁😁.

So, here’s how it’ll work. The theme will be my two fav bois, Frieza and Frost. Specifically, with the two of them wearing cute outfits that you guys come up with! There will be a time limit of one week (meaning March 26th, 2024 is the due date). And when that day comes, I’ll share everyone’s drawings in giant post - make it a little “fashion show” for everyone to see! And then the next day, I’ll set up votes so YOU guys can vote on the winner!

I’m gonna have votes set up for different categories too, such as “cutest outfits” or “most unique outfits” that people can also vote on. But the main winner at the end will get to request a drawing from me - on any character, fandom, or ship they want!

There are gonna be a few rules, but really it’s more like a guideline on the contest:

You don’t have to draw ship art of Frieza and Frost together - just a simple piece with these two wearing an outfit of your choice will suffice, or even two separate pics of each individual character will work (that said, ship art is welcome too).

They don’t have to wear matching outfits, have them wear whatever you come up with.

You are not limited just because both characters are male - you can dress them up in either male or female outfits, but they both only require ONE outfit each.

If you want to dress them up in outfits from a crossover show (for example, dress Frieza up as Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, etc) you can absolutely do that.

You can have Frieza and Frost be in any form you want - obviously most people recognize their final forms, but I’d be delighted to see them in their first forms, or Frieza in Golden Form.

Art can be digital or on paper, you’re free to choose.

You don’t have to follow me to participate - everyone is welcome!

Okay, now for the ACTUAL rules: please keep your outfits and drawings PG-13. I don’t know how many minors actually follow me, or look at my content, but I wanna make this available to everyone.

Leave some sort of signature on your art. I know most artists do anyway, but I don’t want anyone’s art to get stolen.

And finally, please show good sportsmanship. No matter what category someone wins, or who wins the contest at the end, the point of this is just to have fun and show the creativity of many artists! Shower Thoughts on AI Art

I think my aversion to AI art is not a secret and there's ton of posts that I agree with and I could not have put better. Still, I will try to collect a few thoughts of why it's so shitty and depressing for me. No, it's not even because I draw and write a little and I feel threatened by it and the art theft it entails (at my level I just don't). This is more of a consumer standpoint.

AI art for me is like watering down the same teabag 20 times, yeah, you got the ingredients correct and you got some result out of it. But is it still tea? Anyway, you don't care, you water it down the 21st time and the water doesn't even color, so what now? You figure out you just need to put some artificial colorant into hot water and you can call it a tea. Like they do it in the food adverts. Replacing actual food with delicious-looking chemicals. You can make so many cups of tea-looking liquid with just one tiny bit of colorant. You can skip the whole growing the plant, picking the leaves, drying them and whatnot, even something as minor as unpacking the teabag each time... and you get a nice looking cup of tea without all the effort! It's easier, quicker, cheaper. People will eventually get used to the new definition of tea. Except it's poison.

But before you even started slowly poisoning people with it, you devaluated what tea should be. You watered it down till all the taste disappeared and it became colored water that you could replace with... well, colored water.

You can pop these "works" out like microwave popcorn. You can post 20 of them online in an hour. You and everyone else. You are making trash out of a rare and precious good, to be sold at dumping price. In all human history, people who created masterpieces had honed their skills for months, years, and enjoyed the respect of people, sometimes good money (or at least some of them did; more deserved it). Even those who would create forgeries of their work had to train for years to be able to do that. You will just render that effort useless, stupid, laughable. So why should anyone bother and waste their time, train for years, and yet beggar themselves with a worthless trade? The pool of talent will get smaller and skills will deteriorate so I wonder what would the AI feed upon then? Upon itself? Or will it just rehash endlessly what was created before this cursed decade?

And so, we're quickly getting to the poison point. If something is not done to limit it, AI will stop making those dumb mistakes it does now. You will no longer be able to identify it, discern it from human-made art, from real photos, videos. You will be able to not only create flawless masterpieces; you will render your own reality. Manipulating the masses will become even easier than it is right now.

And this is happening to art, you know, the thing that always had our backs and souls in time of crisis. Like the one that is already here. Instead of helping with the crisis, helping us to better lives, AI targets one of the last pillars of hope. One that should inspire us to imagine a better world.

When I saw an amazing piece of art, I used to feel admiration and inspiration, imagining the mind, talent, skill, effort, training, time, energy, emotion that went to it. The artwork itself was just the tip of the iceberg. Now, I squint at it like, AI or not? I will never trust a newcomer artist again. Digital art makes many things easier already, that can't be denied. Combined with AI, it will just make creating great artwork laughably easy. Even if it IS an artist that has (and is willing to train and use) some skill, AI can make it so much easier for them. Soon, there will be no telling between a real artist and a total hack. I can look at the artwork and even like what I see, but guess I will never feel that genuine wonder, genuine emotion again. Maybe I'll only find those feelings in the galleries. I will only trust the artist of ye olde, before 2023, who I know could create those amazing things with their own skills. And same goes for writers, I assume. Luckily, there are tons of human-made writing I still haven't read, human-made art I haven't enjoyed. If I can't find something to entertain, I still can create something to entertain myself. I'll find and pick the herbs myself, dry them, make an infusion. But I know I won't have to resort to poison laced with theft.

tl;dr I'll never support something that ruins human motivation to create. Because that leaves us only the other human thing, which is the opposite.
