my top bit of advice going into the new year: compliment people. especially strangers. literally everyone you interact with if you can. when you buy coffee in the morning compliment the barista's tattoos. when you're chatting with a coworker tell them that by the way you like their outfit. always find something they've chosen to do on purpose. nail polish, jewellery, tattoos, hair colour/style, statement accessory, outfit, etc are all good bets. things people hope will be noticed. things that aren't too personal so it doesn't make them uncomfortable (eg probably not their physical features). i've gotten into the habit of scanning everyone i talk to for something about them that i think is cool so i can tell them. it's a great habit because it makes me notice people and realise just how many neat little details there are in people's presentation of themselves that might pass me by if i wasn't paying attention. and it brings out so much joy. you'd be surprised how much it disarms people to receive an unexpected compliment from someone they don't know. it is the most sincere smile you will see all day long. it feels nice to make people happy but it also means you win the social interaction. establish dominance by complimenting a stranger's earrings and disappearing into the fog

I Saw the TV Glow is such a uniquely, devastatingly queer story. Two queer kids trapped in suburbia. Both of them sensing something isn’t quite right with their lives. Both of them knowing that wrongness could kill them. One of them getting out, trying on new names, new places, new ways of being. Trying to claw her way to fully understanding herself, trying to grasp the true reality of her existence. Succeeding. Going back to help the other, to try so desperately to rescue an old friend, to show the path forward. Being called crazy. Because, to someone who hasn’t gotten out, even trying seems crazy. Feels crazy. Looks, on the surface, like dying.

And to have that other queer kid be so terrified of the internal revolution that is accepting himself that he inadvertently stays buried. Stays in a situation that will suffocate him. Choke the life out of him. Choke the joy out of him. Have him so terrified of possibly being crazy that he, instead, lives with a repression so extreme, it quite literally is killing him. And still, still, he apologizes for it. Apologizes over and over and over, to people who don’t see him. Who never have. Who never will. Because it’s better than being crazy. Because it’s safer than digging his way out. Killing the image everyone sees to rise again as something free and true and authentic. My god. My god, this movie. It shattered me.

I see that many people are sharing memories about the TV series and what it meant to them. I see that many have been helped during the dark and sad period of Covid. for me things were different. I too hated Covid, I hated it, I hated the climate of fear, pain and hatred that it generated. but as I said my experience was totally different. I live in a country stuck in the nineteenth century (unfortunately) where the upper middle class and the lower middle class are perpetually at war for money, prestige and fame (it's absurd but it's like that). I belong to the lower middle class and all my life I have had to satisfy the very high demands of my family, in the social and educational fields. well, in the dark period of covid I found a former classmate of mine who belonged to the working class, completely different from mine. we became best friends and with her and her sisters I experienced a free, happy and crazy period like I've never experienced (to the great desperation of my parents) in that period the first season came out and I connected it to that crazy and magical period . I've experienced both. I enjoyed both. then I got engaged to a cousin of these friends of mine and I created a scandal. at the beginning of filming the second season my love story and friendship unfortunately ended. I went through a very sad time and I clung to the cast of Shadow and Bones. I watched their stories every day and always waited for new news. they kept me company. then, waiting for the second season, my life settled down and improved. I recovered. I had good moments with other people. when I saw the second season, which was controversial for me, I was divided between melancholy for the time I experienced with the first season and adoration for the story of Kaz and the crows in Ketterdam (thanks for that crazy performance, you will always be my crows no matter what things happen ) I liked the rest of the plot a little less (here's Aleksander's story, it's a no. sorry). I loved the flashbacks of Kaz and Jordie even if they were small (I love you guys! Maybe with time we would have another Jordie and another Kazzie. But you are my Jordie and Kaz.) I was disappointed even if not surprised by Netflix's decision . At first I was more upset than I thought. I swear. Now I have some hope. Can the series be saved? it would be a great thing, we can fight I know bardugo said it can be real. it has been the case for other series so.. or over the years we could have another series with another cast (the books are loved I don't see why this couldn't be possible) but the memories guys.. no one can take those away from us! and then we can still watch what little we have, perhaps skipping Nikolai's coronation... just to pretend for a moment that the series ended like this due to a decision by the producers and not due to yet another bastard from Netflix that deprived us of a dream too if not perfect... I'm not going anywhere, I will always remain a fan of this world, of the TV series and the legendary books and why not? also of a possible future in that world.
