I wanted to do this a while ago, but felt like I hadn't read enough, until I checked my likes and got a shock to the face lol. I wanted to give some recommendations of some fics (and a series) that I quite enjoyed reading, plus leave a small review because I feel like it's very underrated to comment on what you like something (people, comment more, I swear it makes a writer feel so much better than a like). For a moment I thought it was some kind of two shot or something, but it only has this one part. Still, I felt the author captured the emotions very well. It felt so realistic that even I was worried when Y/N disappeared lol.

Aunt Yoon is essentially Aunt May in the Marvel story line.  Spiderkook, is more needed to read this fic? It was the first one I read about this au and I was WONDERED. God, you can't imagine how much I loved it. I thought it was so cute the way Jk approached reader being in his suit….

summary; one second, you’re sobbing at prom because the most popular guy in school dumps you due to your relationship being a little prank to break your heart. the next? you’re a creative editor at Ego, the hottest young adult fashion magazine. as you try to figure out what’s the deal with this sudden time skip into adulthood, you come across relationships and friendships that are made to be cherished and made to be broken. genre/warnings; fluff, crack, future enemies to lovers, teenage and adulthood angst, time skips from high school!au to late twenties!au, 13 going on 30!au, all your romantic movie tropes come to life! a really big mess honestly, various movie and music references, mentions of sex, use of alcohol, everyone give jin and jimin a big ol hug, language, a surprise guest from the queen of england. I love adaptations, especially ones that add their own touch, and the writer did it so well. She made me hate Jungkook, and then love him, and then hate him again, in the end I ended up resenting him, I wanted reader to stay with Jin lol, but I still loved it. Definitely my favorite part was having Jimin as a best friend, I loved watching him take on Jungkook in the car. We all need a friend like him.

JJK: You order a sex robot online after getting a coupon for half off. however, there’s something strange about yours. PJM: Fear is primal and causes one to make stupid decisions. KTH: Your parents have a gift for you, however, there’s been a mistake. JHS: As a product tester, you have one of the most sought after temporary positions in Hot Bot Inc. This is a series that has smut, I think the name gives it away. It's rather sad that the writer is on hiatus, but he left the gems of his works open to the public. The series is pretty good, I fell in love with Jungkook (and Yoongi kskjdsksjds). Highly recommended.

I was looking for an adaptation of this movie for so long that when I found this one I almost cried with emotion. I LOVED the movie and the concept it had, and I was so happy to read this fic that captures that very romcom essence that the movie has. I loved it.

Summary: You’d remember Jungkook with every life you lived. Only he’d never remember you, never recall how your fates were written in the stars since the beginning of time. Genre: Angst. Fluff. Light Smut. The anxiety and helplessness I felt reading this fic are on another level. This scarred me, I read it once and I was never the same person again. It was wonderful, I felt so many things and I was so nervous during the whole reading that I almost didn't even realize when it was over. It is a very enjoyable fic.

What if I love you too much? by @taleasnewastime

Summary: Jungkook. It’s only a name you learn after your son kicks his ball over the fence. Before that you only knew him as the hot new neighbour who mows his lawn topless. And though you have no intention of getting to know him anymore than that, inevitably you do. You don’t necessarily fall, it’s too slow for that, but you definitely develop feelings you don’t intend to feel. Because you know men like him, and you know that whatever you’re feeling, he’s probably not feeling the same. All the same, however hard you try, you can’t help yourself. Warnings: Single mum, small fights, explicit sexual content, oral (f receiving), safe penetrative sex, reader thinks Jungkook is cheating/playing the field, angst, but also fluff, child gets injured (though not seriously), talks of cuts and a small amount of blood. This fic left me feeling bad, it even made me question some future decisions regarding my relationship with my future partner and the necessary communication that must be had in a relationship from the beginning, especially if there is a child in the middle. It was something I really enjoyed reading, and even though I had my internal dilemmas with Jungkook, the drabbles in the story helped me a lot to let go of my grudge (I swear I have nothing personal with him sksjkajskajsj).

Last week absolutely got my brain spinning and vibrating so fast I couldn't stop to write my post...this week not so much lol. But as always you can find previous rec lists here. Prepare for an onslaught of some of my favourite codas, and spoilers for the season.

oh, save your life (because you've only got one) by rcdwings is an incredible 8x06 coda in which Eddie dances for joy, answers the door, and has some realisations whilst listening to Buck. Exquisitely written, and so very sensual - Eddie is fully present in his body, heart and mind. (ETA: this fic appears to be removed at the moment, hoping it's temporary *crosses fingers*)

death wish love by @eddiebabygirldiaz a 15k 8x06 coda with an achingly good bittersweet tone, in which Buck and Eddie fall together and Buck does his damnedest not to look too hard at where they might land. Such a compelling and a clever look at the complexities of realising you've been in love with your best friend all this time.

The Billy Boils Breakup Anthem by @sibylsleaves takes a look at 8x05 but reexamining the episode themes to ask what if it had been intended to take place AFTER the break up in the series structure. It works incredibly well, whilst remaining tongue in cheek and keeping the episode's absurdist tone, but giving Buck an opportunity to self reflect on his past relationships.

Clarity by @xylodemon "Sorry." Buck yanks at his belt. "I didn't know it was Tighty-Whities Night at Casa de Diaz until I got here." This is a short but sweet smutty 8x06 coda, with some truly excellent fine tuned banter and dialogue that had me grinning from ear to ear.

meanwhile the world goes on by @cranberrymoons is an 8x06 love letter to getting OUT, going on a run and 'giving each other space to exist and breathe and be.' I love how Eddie gives himself the opportunity to really consider his decisions from a place of embracing what feels good, allowing Buck and Eddie to talk, and to tackle the future together.

making love to someone else by @pairofraggedclaws for those who love mess, a sinfully delicious coda in which Father Brian helps Eddie process his newfound realisations by pulling a Kim and pretending to be Buck.

wanna be your endgame by @absolutelybifurious in which Buck spirals about being Eddie's first after he confessed his love to him, and Maddie has the patience of a saint. This was such a funny and yet emotional take on this conundrum, and Buck was so very Buck about it all.

I am DELIGHTED to be a source of fic recs, and I have JUST the fics for you.

First of all, I highly recommend checking out the various ao3 collections of past chengxian events, such as Chengxian Happy Ending Fest, or Chengxian Minibang 2023, Chengxian Week 2020, Chengxian Week 2021 , Our Meeting is Inevitable or The Chengxian+ Collection, which are a goldmine of wonderful fics. I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding something to your taste among them!

Now, on to my personal recommendations, under the read more because this got LONG.

Based on what you said you'd prefer, the fic all my dreams have come and gone a half a million times by iri_vail sounds like something you'd enjoy. It's a lovely post-canon shuangjie reconciliation fic, 10k words, with wonderful art. There's frogs too!

consider rivers by Lirazel, 9k, canon divergence fic with no war that rewrote my brain chemistry. Jiang Cheng wants Wei Wuxian to marry Jiang Yanli: lots of yunmeng trio feels, lots and lots and lots of pining.

after the sun sets by Artemis1000, 12k words, it's an amazing fic set during sunshot campaign, lots of hurt/comfort, lots of love and understanding and softness between our two favorite miscommunicators.

electricity between both of us by zyprexd is an absolutely incredible series of two fics that make me go feral. Past w4ngxian, tentative shuangjie reconciliation with long overdue communication, lots of feelings aknowledged and accepted, Wei Wuxian introspection.

Turn Back, Dull Earth by groundwiremantaray, 8k, canon divergence, a whole lot of fluff (with a delightful twist). Though not a oneshot, if you like to read happy times with chengxian, this is absolutely the fic for you.

this love that I most fear by Runespoor, 25k words divided in three chapters, in which a coreless Jiang Cheng has to aknowledge Wei Wuxian as his bastard brother in order for him to become sect leader, with all the relative implications. An angsty delight!

Little Sesame by Rurtle, which is an absolute must read. In which the summoning ritual goes wrong and Wei Wuxian reincarnates into a dog. Shenanigans ensue.

born of waters like blood by Artemis1000 (same Artemis as before) which is one of my absolute favorite fics of all time. Chengxian baby made of resentment and lake waters! Chengxian being dads! An unspecified number of eyes!!!! This fic is a bit shorter than the others I've recced, but absolutely worth reading.

letters from inside the storm by serein, in which everyone has a very bad time (not me though, I enjoyed this IMMENSELY), double whump with a very tentative reconciliation.

if tomorrow would ever come... by Midori_99, 17k, a reincarnation fic in which Wei Wuxian after his death reincarnates into a playful little fox and, despite his best efforts, finds himself once again in Lotus Pier, beside Jiang Cheng (and, really, there's no better place for him to be). The good, GOOD, cathartic angst right here, good food for the soul.

Do you have any advice on picking books for readers with limited time? I love to read, but in the past couple years I've been dissatisfied with almost everything I've read and I've purposely been trying to pick a variety: obscure, best-sellers, internet-recs, vintage, recents and I can't seem to pick well. I know the key to finding more good things is to read more quantity, but I've only got so much free time and can only read so fast.

Oh I feel you! There was a whole period of my life when I was desperately trying to find some alchemical formula to ensure that most of the books I read are good-to-great rather than okay-to-good. I had this scientific process where I tried to log a lot of details about the books I read and then look at the numbers year after year to find a common denominator. Is it a matter of reading more, or is it reading more older books vs. recent ones, male vs. female authors, books from my to-read list vs. impulsive reads, books recommended by friends vs. books I find myself? etc. etc. I made line graphs.

In the end the only factor that seemed to correlate with how many good books I read in a year was the number of unfinished reads, so the one piece of advice I have is to not hesitate to give up on a book you're not enjoying. I read multiple books at a time so it's easy to see if there's one that I keep neglecting in favour of the others; and I get most of my books for free or very cheap (from my local library, or OpenLibrary or Zlibrary, or secondhand bookshops where they're like 50cts apiece, or swapping books with friends), the ones I buy new are mostly books I've already read & enjoyed, so I don't have qualms about giving up 20 pages in if I'm not feeling it.

Other than that, I've kind of made my peace with the fact that finding a good book is a mysterious serendipitous process and most of the books I read will be just okay, plus a few bad ones and some great ones.

That said if most books you read end up being unsatisfying rather than at least okay, maybe you're not sure what you're looking for? It helps to identify what you want from a book at a particular time (fun escapism, learning more about a given topic, immersion in a specific atmosphere and if so, which one...) I tend to start a new read with a precise idea of what it would take for this book to be satisfying, e.g. "rn I feel like reading about someone's quiet daily life, maybe a diary or letters, set in a place or context I don't know much about, without turmoil or tragedy" or "a story set in the 17/1800s with flowery prose, interesting female characters, focused on intricate social shenanigans rather than romance or adventure" etc, so it allows me to narrow things down and eliminate potential reads where too many criteria are missing.

And I like to read a few 1-star goodreads reviews—some prefer to focus on 3-star reviews which are more balanced; personally I figure, if the people who hated this book the most cite reasons for disliking it that aren’t dealbreakers for me, that’s a good sign. And if the worst reviews cite stuff I'm actually looking for right now ("too long, too many digressions, long-winded prose, too quiet / not enough action", etc) then it’s a book that comes recommended both by 5-star and 1-star reviewers :)

For a while after their talk, Wren kept their distance from Trevor. But despite his request to be left alone, Wren found themselves watching him every chance they got. They weren’t entirely sure why.

As poor as it was, they’d already tried apologizing. Maybe they still felt guilty, like they owed him something. Or maybe they were still holding on to the hope that the two of them could find some common ground.

One thing they noticed in their observations was how paranoid Trevor seemed. His eyes were constantly scanning any room he was in, almost as if he was expecting someone to jump out and attack him. Occasionally his eyes would meet theirs and narrow in suspicion. After watching them for a moment, though, he’d move on, apparently satisfied with their non-action.

It also struck Wren as odd how cautiously he acted. Sometimes they’d see him reach out his hand to open a door or move a chair, then stop halfway. He’d retract his hand and try to move the obstacle some other way, or if there was no alternative, give up entirely. Wren couldn’t wrap their head around it.

Then one day, they got an idea as to why he acted that way. Wren watched from across the rec room as he tried to scribble something on a piece of paper. They weren’t allowed to use things like pencils or pens without supervision, so he wrote with a marker instead. It was closer to the size of a large sewing needle in his hand.

He was hunched over the table he sat at, all of his focus on the task at hand. His brows were knit in concentration. He held the paper down with his finger and his thumb and carefully pressed the marker to the page. His movements were painfully slow as he scrawled a few letters on the page.

All of a sudden, the casing of the marker cracked in his fingers. He looked at the broken marker with agitation, but not a hint of surprise.

No wonder he’s so afraid to touch things, Wren realized. Everything must seem so fragile to him.

They watched for a little while longer as he attempted to continue writing with the lower half of the marker. He didn’t seem to be making any progress. Making up their mind to lend him a hand, they snatched a marker from the bin and made their way over to the table in the corner where he sat alone.

He was too engrossed in the task at hand to notice them approaching. Wren cleared their throat to make their presence known. Trevor jolted slightly, then slapped his hand over the paper he’d been writing on. His hand covered it completely.

He gave them an irritated look. “I thought I told you to leave me alone,” he grumbled.

“I know, I know. I just thought you might want a little bit of help.” They wiggled the marker in their fingers.

“I can handle it just fine on my own, thanks,” he said coldly.

Wren looked pointedly at the broken marker in his hands, then back to him. “You sure?”

“That’s not—” he stuttered. “That was an accident. Besides, it still works. Kind of.”

“Does it though?”

Trevor rolled his eyes, then set the marker down. When he met their eyes again, his gaze was hard.

“What do you want from me?”

“Huh?” Wren replied, thrown by the sudden shift.

“You really think I haven’t noticed you staring at me all the time? I know there’s a reason for it. Spit it out already,” he demanded.

“I just—” Now it was Wren’s turn to lose the ability to speak coherently. Finally, they sighed in defeat and decided to speak honestly.

“Look, I was a real piece of shit to you the first time we met. It wasn’t fair that you got in trouble just because I had something to prove. I just want to make things right, and I thought this would be a good place to start.”

Trevor was silent. Wren couldn’t read the look he was giving them. When he didn’t say anything in response, they continued.

“I…I understand if you still want nothing to do with me. I’ll go.”

They turned to leave, but before they could, Trevor spoke up.

“Wait.”

They turned to face him again, curious.

“It’s not that I don’t want any help, it’s just,” he rubbed the back of his neck. “The letter I’m writing, it’s kind of personal.”

Wren shrugged. “I won’t ask any questions. Just tell me what to write.”

Trevor mulled it over for another moment. “Fine. Here.”

He raised his hand, revealing the letter he’d been writing. Wren pulled up a chair at the other end of the table, since Trevor pretty much occupied the other half by himself. They slid the paper over to themselves.

He’d only managed to write the words “Dear mamá” so far. There was also a large splotch of red ink after, probably from when the marker had broken.

Wren uncapped their own marker with their teeth. “What do you want to say?” they asked, putting their pen to paper.

“Um…” Trevor drummed his fingers on the table in thought. His fingers were also stained with ink.

“Let’s just start with ‘It’s been a while, hasn’t it?’”

Wren nodded and wrote that down.

“‘I’m sorry they wouldn’t let you see me these past few weeks,’” he continued. “‘The truth is, it’s not your fault, it’s mine.’”

He waited for Wren to finish copying down what he was saying before he went on. They were starting to realize that his voice wasn’t really what they’d expected. They’d expected someone his size to have a loud, booming voice, but he was actually fairly soft-spoken.

“‘I ended up getting into a fight on one of my first days here, so they,’ uh…” He paused, apparently lost in thought.

“I can’t think of the right phrase. What do you call it when they won’t let people see you in jail?” he asked.

“Visitation privileges?” Wren offered.

“That’s it,” he agreed. “‘so they took away my visitation privileges.’”

He kept talking even as Wren struggled to keep up. “‘I swear I wasn’t trying to, everything just happened so quickly, and I—’”

“Slow down,” Wren complained.

“Oh, sorry,” he said, then paused so they could catch up.

“Ok, keep going,” they said.

“Alright. So, ‘everything just happened so quickly, and I lost control of myself.

“‘Afterwards, I tried to stay out of trouble, but stuff like that kept happening.’”

Wren frowned. It sounded like they weren’t the only one who had gotten into a fight with him.

“‘It really wasn’t my fault,’” he continued. “‘but I probably could’ve handled things better.’”

He was quiet for a moment after that. Wren looked up to see him staring at his left hand, the one covered in red ink.

“Trevor?”

“Huh?” He looked back up at them. “Oh, sorry. Give me a minute to think of what to say next.”

“Right,” he said eventually. “‘So, about the last time we saw each other, on the day I was arrested.

“‘You didn’t really do anything wrong. I was just worried that I—’” He stopped. “Actually, don’t put that.”

“Oh, whoops,” Wren said, putting a line through that last sentence fragment.

“I really don’t want her to see that part. Can we just start over on a new piece of paper?”

“Hold on,” Wren said. They colored in the part they’d struck a line through, so it was impossible to tell what had been written there.

“There, see? Everything’s fine,” they assured him. Although they were incredibly curious about what he’d been about to say, they’d promised not to ask questions. Maybe if this went well, they’d get a chance to ask him some other time.

“Fine. Just put, ‘I’m not mad at you. You don’t need to worry about it anymore.’”

“Okay…” they wrote that down, then looked at him expectantly.

“This next part’s kind of sappy. Just, don’t say anything about it, please?”

“I won’t, I promise.”

“Alright.” Trevor took a deep breath.

“‘I just wanted to say that I’m so, so sorry. For everything. For getting into fights, for losing control of myself, all of it. I never wanted to disappoint you. I’m going to try and be better from now on. I promise you, I’m going to be the kind of son you can be proud of. Love, Trevor.’”

It was quiet for a moment after Wren finished writing that down. They felt the need to say something, even though they’d promised not to.

“It sounds like you care about her a lot,” they said.

“I do. She’s all I’ve got.”

Wren had to wonder what that was like. They hadn’t heard a word from their parents since they’d been arrested. They were closer to their sister, but she hadn’t come to see them at all. Probably for the same reason Trevor hadn’t seen his mom yet either.

“Do you think she’ll notice the handwriting isn’t mine?” Trevor asked

“Uh…here.”

Wren added a line at the end of the letter: PS Sorry if the handwriting looks weird. I had to get someone else to write this for me. The markers here are too small for me to use.

Then they passed the letter back to Trevor for him to look over. He took a minute to read it through. He breathed a laugh when he got to the end.

“Looks good to me,” he told them.

“Cool. I’ll try and find an envelope, then.” Wren stood up and began to walk away.

“Hey, Wren?”

They smiled to themselves. He’d actually remembered their name.

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for your help.”

They looked back, quickly hiding the smile on their face.

“Anytime,” they said coolly.

I was legitimately just pruning my bookmarks the other day!! thank you so much for asking.

I don't read too much fanfic these days, and I'm picky when I do--only about grammar/punctuation and immersion though. I ship a LOT of stuff (I guess The Youth would call me a proshipper) and although I never read darkfic, I don't shy away from weirder kinks and unhealthy relationship stuff.

categorizing by pairing, if applicable. some of them are smutty, and please note that the first 3 come from FFN which doesn't have a tagging system, but there is some SA CW I'll give in advance.

KAKASAKU | my first OTP! formative fics that totally reshaped my understanding of what fanfiction could be, and how well-written chemistry can make it or break it

HOUSE OF CROWS is the quintessential kakasaku fanfic. it was written during shippuden and so is canon divergent because of that, but also tells a comprehensive story of its own right that is intriguing and well planned. excellent characterization and world building. leaves me gutted in the best way on my yearly reread.

DUTY BEFORE HONOR is another silvershine classic. I don't reread is as often as House of Crows but they are just about equal in quality. again, the chemistry between them is off the charts, and the world feels so alive.

WILL OF FIRE for me is up there with House of Crows in being essential kakasaku reading. cynchick is a multisaku champion and a wonderful storyteller. the stakes in this one are stressful, the romance tense and believable, and we once again get lovely world building and great chemistry.

ITAKISA | a pairing near and dear to me, because men who do everything wrong are so deeply relatable. they both know they don't deserve anything good ever again but they found each other!!!! ARE YOU GUYS SEEING THIS--

A SHARK HIDDEN INN THE LEAVES doesn't have my favorite version of Kisame, but he's plenty close enough. it's a lengthy oneshot that got me into certain *ahem* kinks. it is a very fun and wild fic that is entirely self-aware of how absurd it's being, and manages to have nothing but sincerity at the same time (and I highly recommend the author's other stories as well)

AN ORCHESTRA PLAYING ON, INSANE is a modern AU (extremely rare in my bookmarks) that absolutely tore my heart out. god is it SO much to ask for these losers to be happy?! yes, it is, and I love every moment of it

MADAMITO | a rarepair I am SUCH a sucker for that has some of the most talented authors writing for it. lots of them have ot3 elements between them and hashirama, often angsty, but stuff like that is part of the appeal for me, lol

A HANDFUL OF SKY is an unfinished fic that I genuinely think about like once a week. if it ever updates then I will be over the moon. technically hashimadamito but it hadn't quite gotten there yet

LIKE ALTARS is just such a beautiful piece of writing, mostly on madara. it is everything, that is all

BLOOD AND RIVER WATER is more mito-centric but has one of my favorite madaras of all time

YOURS ARE RATTLED BONES is another short, mito-centric but gut-wrenching piece featuring the opposite type of madara from the last one

OTHER | character-centric stuff that isn't necessarily shippy but also doesn't have a very "gen" vibe either?

A SERPENT IN THE RICE is a little series about orochimaru that makes me feel so so so many things. highly recommended

HERETIC is such a love letter to kushina, and kurama too. cannot stress enough how much I adore this one

there's a few others that I probably won't link on tumblr, mostly unhealthy and/or "problematic" smut hhfhdj but maybe I'll make a public rec list on ao3 for these different categories and stuff like that.

but yeah that's pretty much it!!! I know it's not a huge list with a lot of variety but it's what I've enjoyed over the last 15+ years in the naruto fandom.
