Being in America is super fun because you get to see Trump going up against Biden in a presidential election with both of them being dogshit options, mass protests against what should very obviously be seen as an injustice that spits in the face of what you were told your country stands for, except the government disagrees, using the power of the militarized state to brutalize protestors, all the while people spread malicious lies regularly with millions believing their every word(a lot of it being thanks to some rich freak on Twitter). Also, the economy is doing pretty damn poor and you see media sources tell you to sacrifice your well-being all while the ultra rich get richer and richer.

And then after you're done with 2020, you get to do it again four years later

#living in america is so exhausting sometimes #i genuinely believe there is good in this country #the idea of a cultural melting pot founded on liberty and freedom is a very very good one #the issue comes in where half the country doesnt actually care about those values

after literal years i finally got around to downloading a pdf of the wipers times, an unsancitioned satitical british trench magazine circulated among the troops in france from 1916-1918 after the fortuitous discovery of a printing press. i have approximately five million other things i need to read so idk when i'll be able to devote much time to it, and i gotta pick up a proper copy bc it's missing at least salient no 4 vol 2. that said? i'm genuinely laughing at what i've skimmed so far

#this is like THE page everyone likes it seems but it's SO good #also the flammenwerfer one i found on wikipedia is gold. that's the only reason i know no 4 vol 2 is missing from the pdf after skimming #and 'DEAD COW FARM' CINEMA. is great #the wipers times is SO fascinating to me as a glimpse of life into the trenches without any signifigant censorship of the bitterness that's #couched in satire. it's hilarious satire but there's still bitterness there sometimes! and gallows humor! this was adored by the men on the #front but it's amazing it happened at all. It’s very humbling when you’re reading a book —part of a trilogy, very acclaimed— and the only thing you can think of is ‘the fanfic I read the other day was better’

#like #nothing against the book of course #but I figured out the plot twist about 20 pages in #the chemistry between the MC and the love interest just wasn’t being very chemistry-y #and the plot wasn’t even that great when I compared it to the absolute MASTERPIECE I found on ao3 the other day #yes it was a sterek fic #of course there are books that are very good. this just wasn’t one of them and I struggled understanding why it’s so popular #on reading #patolemus speaks #ao3 #fanfic
