The Best Parts of The Blossoming Love/Qian Duo Tao Hua Yi Shi Kai webnovel (with links!):

The story is pretty similar, right down to lots of quotes, though they've moved some things around and added some side plots. They also drastically improved the Jade Parents (Fu family) and Gao Qiumin, who was a Jealous Crazy Girl in the novel.

XXC and MXL make out in the mutual Cage of Greed (after she's poisoned)

The peach blossom scene happens, but better, because XXC takes off ALL of MXL's clothes to count the peach blossoms... with his mouth. There are more than 40. He does still stop and for the same reasons.

The very first scene where MXL kisses XXC for pill swallowing reasons is paralleled when XXC puts the lotus seed in his mouth and then kisses MXL until she swallows it (she doesn't know why she needs it and would have spit it out)

Once MXL is detoxified, she is like, "I can see now, so finish what you were doing." And they do! With a sound barrier and everything

The Jade Himbo (Fu Lansheng) is a pretty similar character except that it's outright said that he's a manwhore (this is only hinted at in the drama) and people think that A'Bao is his illegitimate daughter. But importantly, he rolls his eyes at XXC & MXL putting up a sound barrier because it's so obvious. He is still an excellent babysitter.

XXC is helping MXL cultivate power... so they can have sex for longer.

Novel explanation of Yao/Half Yao: Yao are animal/tree spirits, they can cultivate Yao power and have a true form and a human form. Half Yao only have one form, they are stuck. If born to a human mother, they look human with Yao traits (Sang Qi has wolf ears), if born to a Yao mother, they are in animal form. A'Bao cannot take human form at first, she is only a treasure mouse. MXL teaches her the Jade technique so A'Bao can switch. Half Yao also cannot have children and cannot cultivate spiritual power, only demonic power (without the Jade thing). The demons that live in the underworld have no heartbeats and are different from the Yao. They can't be killed and just reincarnate whenever destroyed.

XXC & MXL's happy ending is that she's basically married to two people in one body (XXC and Demon Lord Dude) and has kinky sex with both personalities forever

I'm re-reading the Discworld series for reasons, and honestly the most relatable part of reading these as an adult is how many of the protagonists start out being tired, used to their little routine and vaguely disgruntled by the interruption of the Plot. Sam Vimes wants to lie drunk in a gutter and absolutely doesn't want to be arresting dragons. Rincewind is yanked into every situation he's ever encountered, though he'd much rather be lying in a gutter too. (Minus the alcohol. Plus regretting everything he's ever done said witnessed or even heard about fourth-hand in his whole life.) Granny Weatherwax is deeply suspicious of foreign parts and that includes the next town over; Nanny has leaned into the armor of "nothing ever happens to jolly grannies who terrorize their daughters-in-law and make Saucy Jokes"

Only the young people don't seem to have picked up on this---and that's fortunate, because someone has to run around making things happen, if only so Vimes and Granny and Rincewind have a reason to get up (complaining bitterly the whole time) and put it all to rights. Without Carrot, Margrat, Eric, etc. these characters don't have that reason; they're likely to stay in the metaphorical gutter and keep wondering where it all went wrong or why anything has to change.

............well, that's not quite true. You get the sense that Vetinari knows how much certain people hate the Plot. And as the person sitting behind the metaphorical lighting board of Ankh-Morpork, he takes no small pleasure in forcing the Plot-haters specifically to stand up, and say some lines.

purity culture ruins people’s ability to engage with works that deal with serious issues and it’s disheartening to see people entirely miss the point of a work because they are guided by a knee jerk reaction towards disgust and I need to ramble

so, I’m reading a book called Jawbone by Monica Ojeda and it’s a very interesting horror novel that centers around puberty and teen girls and their relationships to their mothers. One of the bigger themes in the book is the idea of shame revolving around sexual development. One of the main characters is a young lesbian who is developing feelings for her best friend and has a mother who is incredibly homophobic and disapproving and in part of the book there’s a scene where this character talks about her mother catching her masturbating and the way that she is disgusted by her daughter and kind of this horror around being viewed as having lost your innocence from experiencing something that is common and should be mundane. sexual development is seen as a horrific and sinful action and that causes this character trauma through the rest of the book surrounding the way that her mother looks at her and how her mother is going to react when she finds out that she’s gay it’s a book that deals with a lot of topics around sexual shame. For example, another character is so terrified of the sin of masturbation that she keeps herself from masturbating by imagining being raped by men in her family who she cares about because it disgusts her and keeps her from achieving sexual arousal. the book itself shows that the action of the character masturbating when she’s six years old is an innocent action. It’s one that comes from curiousity and just what happens when you have a body. The book is very clear that the act is being sexualized by the adults around her and their reactions feel violating.

So it is infuriating to then go from reading this book to trying to read reviews of this book and finding that the first review on Goodreads is a one star review that just says “in this book a six-year-old masturbates 🤮” participating in the same disgust with the natural sexual development of young girls that the book itself tries to depict as a horrifying and violating way to view children and puberty

So while I'm unlikely to have enough time to get another whole comic out before the new year, I recently got hit by the urge to just draw some random facts about Ember that I'm not sure will ever end up showing up in a comic.

I tend to forget that all of her comic appearances so far have given a pretty shallow idea of what she's really like, so I figured this might be a fun way to flesh her out a bit more.

No idea how many of these I'll end up doing. I have a bunch in mind but I doubt I'll actually get through all of them.

If anyone has anything specific they'd like to know about her, let me know! I can't promise I'll be able to do a piece of art to answer it, but who knows.
