An interstellar love story between omega!Lin Han and alpha!He Yunting, filled with romance, fights against aliens, and conspiracies. As the summary explained, Lin Han is capable of reading people’s minds, including that of the socially awkward general He Yunting’s mind. He met He Yunting during a dinner, where he witnessed an assassination attempt made towards the general. Subsequently, multiple assassination attempts were made towards He Yunting, all involving omegas with their glands removed. 

Eventually, Lin Han found himself embroiled amidst the conspiracies surrounding He Yunting: cases of abnormally strong omegas with their glands removed, a planet of betas becoming zombie-like and aggressive, aliens that appeared out of nowhere to attack the Empire, and the royalty’s potential involvement in these cases. 

A few highlights:

I love their pet Gu Lulu that they got from another planet. It is so cute and cuddly, plus the way it would cry whenever it thought that Lin Han abandoned it. 

Ji Meng’s death was very sudden. But because of it, it is also one of the more impressionable deaths I had come across in quite awhile. 

The overall plot is decent - all the overarching storylines do come together eventually, even if they were predictable. But apparently this is the author’s first serious novel, so it’s pretty decent!

There’s quite a few nice smutty scenes in there~ Mecha and sex? C’mon, it’s kinky~

The story manages to scratch some of my a/b/o itch. I was looking for a/b/o stories that don’t involve school-type fluff-only romance, so it’s nice to see some conspiracy and politics involved in an a/b/o story. 

Some of the not-so-enjoyable parts:

MC could have so much more potential. I like that Lin Han wanted to use his mind reading ability to help He Yunting at the start (e.g. by sussing out who is trying to target the general). But beyond a few inconsequential times that he used the ability for plot purposes, it is generally only mentioned in the context of Lin Han knowing He Yunting’s adoration for him. 

The last part about Lin Han’s mother and her romance with the prince, plus Lin Han’s true identity as a prince, is very, very forced. Felt like it didn’t play a prominent role in the novel and was just added on to give Lin Han this cool identity (maybe so that he can be the general’s equal?). Also, for the longest time the story teases at Lin Han being special because of his spiritual and mind-reading ability, so that there is high stakes since he would be targeted for gland-removal. But it turns out that the villain didn’t even really consider him when Yunting intervened. Overall, the final reveal is rather anticlimatic. 

Also, He Yunting’s attraction to Lin Han is not really logical…? Apparently he willingly loses his memories so that Lin Han can’t read it and learn about his mother’s past. But there wasn’t really anything worth being upset about, so it ended up reading like a forced romance plot point.

I know this because, and this is not an exaggeration, the vast majority of my manga revisits are to enjoy his expressions of anger, disdain, and malcontent. i shit you not, several of my bsd meta posts wholly unrelated to fyodor were written because I happened to notice something else while flipping through to imbibe fedya's hissy fits. I don't reread the manga when I do this, just those scenes, unless something else catches my attention.

re: jianghu as a queer space in mlc

there are many definitions of jianghu, but this is specifically based on the framing of jianghu as the space people retreat to, away from the mainstream sphere governed by the imperial court. in that is a sense of rejection and defiance against the patriarchal, heteronormative values and norms, which had been enforced through a fixation on upkeeping order in the society. as such i guess it's not too much of a stretch to interpret jianghu as a queer space in a way that's characterised by a spirit of nonconformity to the norms. consequently, it makes sense for stories set in jianghu be used to illustrate and navigate queer identities/experiences/feelings - which I came to believe mlc had made really good use of.

there's always kind of a dichotomy between 江湖 jianghu and 庙堂 miaotang (ie. imperial court). like in mlc, there are two separate, distinct law enforcement bodies from the respective spheres - and jianghu strives to keep imperial court from interfering in their affairs. like how li xiangyi firmly stands against getting imperial court involved in jianghu matters. like how fang duobing is actively running away from the grip of the royal court on his life choices. the rejection of the mainstream (very conveniently and broadly put, confucian) norms in mlc also manifests in many of its key relationships being non-familial (in the sense of blood/marriage-based kinship) and there being little emphasis on the main characters' biological familial ties. (anyway this is for a whole different meta on its own... edit: it's here)

it's then actually a sort of irony that the imperial court's institution of law and order is what sigu sect/baichuan court had been formed to be a de facto counterpart to. so when li xiangyi becomes li lianhua, it triggered the process of deconstructing the meaning of installing such an institution and the need to maintain order to a fundamentally nonconforming space such as jianghu. mama fang's seemingly throwaway line of criticising li xiangyi and his mission is in fact the thesis statement in this particular reading of mlc's story: jianghu makes its own rules. nobody should dare to do it in its place.

now deprived of all means to fight like he used to, li xiangyi's new life as li lianhua is essentially a refresh of how he views jianghu. the death of li xiangyi the leader of sigu sect and top of wulin, meant taking apart the idea that jianghu is a lawless arena where the fittest fight to the top for power and control over wulin. and li lianhua then putting together lotus tower, living a life focusing on a domestic lifestyle this time for real far from the reach of the governance both from the imperial court and sigu sect/baichuan court, is him living the jianghu that's defined as a space away from any form of conformity.

with that, there's also a sense of queerness to this particular way of living as li lianhua, if you consider the chinese conceptualisation of gender being more social than biological. if femininity and masculinity were respectively characterised by inner/domestic sphere and external/any space outside of that, dare I say...it actually makes li lianhua's moving house mindblowingly smart as a metaphor for gender fluidity. lonely wanderers are common in wuxia but housed lonely wanderers? he carved for himself a domestic (ie. feminine) space in the wilderness - among a jianghu space that's still dominated by masculine values of aggression and competition. and being freely mobile makes this feminine space more fluid and less tied down than the more rigid, inert domestic, feminine spaces in traditional mainstream society. when you combine it with how his character has been fem-coded - even as li xiangyi (eg. yin-coded powers/energy) (also a whole other meta on its own... edit: it's here now), it speaks to a part of him that has always found appeal in qualities conventionally associated with femininity of stability, gentleness and non-aggression. and a rejection of expectations to fight and destroy. he is defining who he is in his own terms, in the true spirit of jianghu.

why. this is the first instance of mark being designated as the one in charge when a higher-up (fred, in this case) isn't present. but why. they were only trapped in the slipspace fuckeryzone for a few days relative to normal space-time and i don't think anything drastic happens (with these guys) in glasslands? at least according to the wiki it doesn't. why did being integrated into blue team suddenly disrupt team saber's former command structure?

did they plan to kill mark off at the very start of this? was this all a long game to give mark enough of a foothold as an Important Character to make his death have more impact? does troy denning just like him more? how much weight did his personal preferences even play in this? why do the gammas suddenly start bantering when they're in danger and alone with a woman they just met? why do mark and ash seem to switch personalities every other chapter? why is this worse than i remember it being when i first read it a few months ago?

im largely an outsider so take my opinions with a grain of salt but one thing thats been disappointing me in the few omegaverse stories ive read, despite how much the genre intrigues me in theory, is the like.. biological monogamy? with the biting stuff? i dunno i dont care for soulmate and soulmate adjacent stuff in general and tbh im not super invested in the horny aspect (although i do respect and appreciate it. guards impregnate that man etc etc) as much as i am in the speculative fiction biology+exploration of human sociopolitical landscapes through an anthropomorphized lens so this is a me problem but i do just know too much about too many animals so the claiming bite stuff being anything more than just bedroom play completely breaks my suspension of disbelief. all this to say i do keep telling my irl loved ones that i need to make the white throated sparrow based omegaverse i see in my minds eye. i see it so clearly. i see it so clearly.

SO. there are. two ways to assign the prime defenders powers etc. the first way is just, like, categorize their existing powersets within the prt framework, & the second is to give them entirely new abilities based on the way worm works. delightfully, all the powers they Do have work really well for the most part, so even that doesn't require a ton of shuffling.

categorizing their pre-existing powers:

wiwi-- breaker w/ a shaker subclass. neither of them rated very high, but that's already a rare and versatile enough combination!!

dakota-- brute babeeeey!!! brute/mover its so straightforward. hell yeah babey. i don't know what he'll end up looking like post-heart removal & stuff but my guess is that'll end up looking more like a mover/striker.

vyncent-- now THIS one gave me trouble. i... hm. to say this without talking about stuff that i don't think has come up much already, (hey!! you're at that clockblocker pov! directly related to what flechette says!) i'd call him a grab-bag cape, irt the greats at least. post-greats-- again, i don't know what his powerset will look like after this arc! but if he's going all in w/ the fire magic, that would for sure be some striker shit! :]]]

wiwi still breaker for sure, maybe breaker-master, maybe master-stranger. yknow. powers are fluid, the prt categories are pretty rigid. i... don't know. enough about his situation yet to be clearer than that vague idea yet-- i really like the idea of him just. ditching his body & using a noncorporeal form but he still has to keep an eye on his body i think that's great. the noncorporeal form would b able to change its visibility but still b limited by proximity to the body. & fluctuating energy shit powered by fluctuating amounts of recent-death in the area, maybe probably also limited in that it's only accessible in his breaker form.... also i think u will appreciate this style note from the [UNNAMED PARAHUMANS TTRPG] i'm referencing a lot here.

dakota--in this situation he probably would not. have that mechanical heart and shit. he' would still be a mover/thinker-- thinker rating is for faster mental processing + senses imminent pain for the people in his immediate vicinity. not danger, just pain; it immediately registers ambiently & can be generally traced back to whoever it is. no he can't turn it off ever, it manifests as feeling a similar level of pain, yes it works on himself. + mover-- he can fucking fly. no super strength, just very fast flight & the general "won't splat himself flying into something" capabilities, which meshes well w/ the faster processing & reflexes. i'm split on how exactly this would work mechanically but i will NOT go into that now. i am also not going into the 15k discussion in my brain on why dakota 'notoriously bad at thinking about things' cole would be a thinker but u gotta trust the process ok??

vyncent-- trump!!!! somehow this is the only straightforward one to me? he can copy powers at the full strength or ability level of the original for an unspecified amount of time that's usually 1-30 minutes by touching the cape. crucially, he doesn't have any edge on how to use these powers + can easily misuse or become extremely overwhelmed by them. he's easily the most powerful out of the three of them <33

HOWEVER now my thinking has changed AGAIN and I think the powers ARE related to specific trigger events but it's not as straightforward as "oh something scary happened to you with bugs so now you have bug powers" I think it's gonna be more complicated than that. WHICH. THE WAY THIS RELATES. BACK ON TOPIC NOW. to DAKOTA . assuming his trigger event is still he and katori falling off the building I think it's AWESOME that his powers would manifest as FLIGHT for one. and the fucking. pain sense thing. fuck me up. dakota extreme hero complex cole would be so fucked up by a power where he ambiently senses pain from the people around him at all times and cannot turn it off. AAAASHE ASHE ASHE IM SOOO SO GLAD YOU INCLUDED ASHE IN THIS I miss him.so much every day. from what I know so far master involves having/making/controlling some sort of minion (cannot think of a better word than that rn) AND I THINK THATS REALLYYYY perfect for ashe. i assume he would actually work pretty closely to canon in that his limitation would be the book? or if he doesn't have the book maybe his limitation would be a) having only a few different types of things he could summon (the big hand, the water fairy, duck etc) and/or b) only being able to control them.for a short amount of time after they're summoned so he has to be quick about dismissing them. can't keep the demon hand around for too long or it might start picking things up and throwing them at random. putting teammates in danger bc he can't control it anymore etc etc. alsooooooo in clockblocker pov they VERY briefly mentioned the possibility of having secondary trigger events (?!!!!?!?!) and you know I locked onto that SO FUCKING HARD. ashe being born with powers and then his secondary trigger event being his mom's death <3 im.NOT even going to attempt to talk about how the trickster would work in worm world/if it would even exist in this setting bc i don't know enough about the types of powers and things yet..but just know. "...That was reckless." He finally said, putting away the cloth in exchange of some gauze.

"D-Don't 'Oh Blue' me, mister! You and I both know that was reckless, you have to be more careful next time!" He scolded with anger in his voice, being more forceful than necessary to cut the gauze.

"I did it for Dream... Hun, I'm already infected, there's... There was no real danger."

Swap huffed, "Bullshit! T-The magnificent Sans saw how deep these marks are, and... and what if you hadn't have been infected!?"

Lust gave him a soft, but surprised expression. Before morphing into a small grin. "...I suppose I wouldn't have been wearing a muzzle, huh?"

"...That's—That was a t-terrible time... f-for joking..." He started to sniffle.

"Ah, I didn't mean to upset you!" Lust quickly tried to sit up, going to comfort him.

"Don't do that again!" He said suddenly, dropping hid supplies and diving in for a hug, despite that being forbidden.

"I-..." Lust paused, so Blue filled the silence.

"You matter to us, your actions were brave, b-but we both know you could've just pulled him back... or used your spear for him to bite—O-Or maybe you couldn't, and this was the only way... I still wish you took your safety more seriously..." He said softly, resting Lust's chin in his shoulders.

The one in purple, hesitated, but slowly wrapped his own arms around Blue. "I'm sorry I scared you, sweetie..."

"....I'm sorry I yelled, you don't need that right now." He replied, slowly pulling back.

"But, we can't replace you, okay? Just like we could never replace Sci, or Dream, or Ink."

The comparison to, well, uninfected, made Lust's metaphorical heart beat just a bit faster.

"Okay?" Blue asked, just to be sure. Lust nodded, and he smiled. Putting his arms on hid back, the skeleton in Blue gently helped Lust lay down again.

"Could you possibly stomach something to eat?" Blue asked as he tucked Lust in.

hi hollyyyy im just dropping in to provide some additional info regarding kingdom hearts/FF to the non FF/KH players 🏃‍♀️

sora (the lil guy u posted) is actually a brunette 14-16 (depending on game) years old kid

the reason why some might confuse cloud w him/KH is bc cloud (and other well known FF characters such as tidus(x), selphie(viii), aerith(vii), squall(viii),etcetc) also appear in the KH games as characters :) FF/KH have the same publisher and designer (most ff games) and its not a disney game but rather a collab. sorry for rambling, youn out 🏃‍♀️

(lmao i actually know who sora is and that he’s brunette despite having not much interest in kingdom hearts, i think i watched some content for it when i was younger, i was just trying to pass him as dirty blond for the joke jsjsh /silly; i was not informed on his age though, so i partially retract my twink statement)

i didn’t know that they had the same designer since they never really felt similar to me, but now that you mention it i do vaguely recall seeing sora and cloud next to one another some time

(but honestly i might have passed it off as being from smash bros since i think both of them are in there? or at least cloud and shulk are, i think, idk i didn’t keep up with who they added lol)

anyway, don’t worry about rambling, i really don’t mind <3
