Mini-review:

Wow, I didn't think I would enjoy The Frog so much. I guess I was in the mood for a dark, propulsive thriller. I've seen some people say it's 'slow', but like... where? This kept me glued to the screen from the very first episode, and it got more and more intense throughout the next ones. It even ventures into psychological horror territory from time to time, which made it even more fun to me. The writing isn't perfect (some of the characters aren't as well developed as they should), but the directing and the acting more than make up for it. Go Min Si turns in a particularly strong performance, and it's clear she gave it her all. I'm not gonna say this is the best thriller k-drama I've seen, but it was definitely enjoyable as hell.

DELIGHTFULLY DECEITFUL

SUMMARY: Can an ultra-empathetic lawyer truly be friends with a genius con artist and still maintain any kind of legal ethics?

THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Childhood trauma, exploitive variety shows, manhwa store hackers, flirty probation officers, lazy co-workers, office action figures, bags of cash, phishing scams, gambling, hidden bathroom revolvers, red notebooks, arson, neck tattoos, revenge, independent journalism, and lifelong friendships.

HOT TAKE: On some sites I've see this show also listed as a Comedy, but for every laughable moment in this show there's at least a dozen moments of childhood trauma. That being said, it's so hilarious to see Kim Dong Wook and Yoon Park together again (previously 'You Are My Spring') as super well-dressed, shippable main characters.

Alchemy of Souls (Part 1 & 2)

This is definite another favorite of mine; right next to Scarlet Heart Ryeo. Alchemy of Souls & Alchemy of Soul: Light and Shadow tell the story a young group of mage who have to fight against the greed of soul shifters and the sorcerous that conjure the spell. The story has a perfect balance of humor, action, romance, and suspense in a beautifully threaded plot.

The story begins with Naksu, a powerful female assassin, who wants to avenge the murder of her father as she follows her master's orders. And Jang Ok trying to unlock the power within him in his quest to becoming the mage everyone is trying to prevent him to become because of the truth of his birth. These two meet when Jang Ok has left his last master and she has shifted to the body of a blind girl in order to escape death. But she is no longer the powerful mage she had been, now that she is trapped in this body and in order to regain her power, she accepts becoming Jang Ok's master disguised as servant.

These two lives are entwined in a tangle of intrigue, misunderstanding and friendships that are strengthened and forged as Naksu as Mu Deok and Jang Ok walk the challenging terrain to make Jang Ok reach the highest level of a mage.

I fell in love with the characters, their personalities, their struggles and feelings. The end of the first part broke my heart.

The second part starts 3 years after Mu Deok's death and Jang Ok's returning from the afterlife with the ice stone. Jang Ok who is surrounded by shadows, and the pain of losing the love of his life, has become the most powerful mage and carries the responsibility of destroying soul shifters. Meanwhile, the two souls that had co-existed in Mu Deok's body are now enclosed in Naksu's body. But this time, both souls have lost their memories and powers and are imprisoned in the Jinyowon household. It is through Jin Bu Yeon's interaction with Jang Ok and the others that she slowly regains her powers and memories. In this last part, the youth come together to defeat the greed and selfishness of the king, queen, and everyone who sought to gain power through the alchemy of souls and the ice stone.

This series was definitely worth the wait! I recommend it to everyone. I will be thinking about this story for a long time. I know I will be watching this one multiple times.

Bu dizi konusu ve kalitesi açısından diğer dizilerden sıyrılıp ön plana çıkmayı başarıyor. Öncelikle dizide mantıksızlıklar ya da yaptım olduculuk yoktu. Hotel Del Luna yazarlarından yine ortak bir çalışma olarak karşımıza çıkan bu dizide aynı mantık ile hikaye oluşturulmuş. Bir dünya yaratılmış, o dünyanın kuralları ve mekaniği belirlenmiş. Hikaye örgüsü bu mekaniğin üzerinde yürütülmüş. Bu nedenle de kendi mantığını kendi yaratıyor.

Dizi iki kısım olarak yayınlandı. İki kısmın birbirinden en büyük farkı ise başrol kadın oyuncu. Cesur bir karar verip dizinin yarısında başrol değiştirmek herkesin alabileceği bir risk değil. Çok net söyleyebilirim; altında da kalkılmış. Fantastik bir dünyada kurgusal bir ülkede geçen dizi bizi bekliyor. Farklı yeteneklere sahip ailelerin hakim olduğu, yuvarlak masa şövalyeleri gibi bir konsey tarafından yönetilen bir şehir ile diziye giriş yapıyoruz. Bu dünya da büyü ve ruhlar alemi sıradan bir şey. Herkesin geldiği aileye göre büyü yetenekleri, içinde uyanmış ya da uyanmayı bekleyen bir ruh taşı var.

Her güzel şey gibi bununda olumsuz bir tarafı var. Dizinin kötü adam kontenjanlarının amacı da bu ruh taşlarını kullanarak beden değiştirmek. Diziyi anlatmaya neden kötü adamdan başladığımı bilmiyorum. Ama bağlayacağım. Ruh değişiminin ağır bedeller ile geldiğini de söylemeliyim. Büyük bir büyücü olan babası, ruh değiştirme konusunda yaşadıkları sonrasında doğan oğlu Jang Uk(Lee Jae-Wook)’un bütün büyü gücünü bebekken mühürler. Ve ülkeden ayrılır. Zamanında kralın sağ kolu olan bu adam, hatırı sayılır nüfusunu kullanarak diğer bütün büyük büyücülerin ve ailelerinin de bu mührü kırmayacaklarından emin olur. Aradan uzun yıllar geçer. 4 ailenin çocukları birlikte büyürler. Jang Uk büyü gücü olmadığı için hep arka plandadır. Hiç kimse onun bu mührü kırmasına yardım etmeye cesaret edememiştir. Yıllarca büyü öğretmenleri tarafından eğitim verilmesi reddedilmiştir. Mührünü kırabilecek kadar güçlenmesine yardımcı olacak bir hoca aramaktadır.

Soğuk kanlı bir katil olan ruh değiştirici Naksu (Ko Yoon-Jung), büyük ailelerden biri olan Songrim’in lideri Park Jin(Yu Jun-Sang) ile girdiği dövüş sonrasında ölümcül bir yara alır. Naksu, inanılmaz bir güce sahip bütün ülkede korkulan bir isimdir. Ruh değiştirici olduğu bilinen bu tehlikeli kız aldığı yara sonrasısı kayıplara karışır. Tam ölmek üzereyken ruhunu başka bir vücuda aktarır. Aktardığı vücut kör bir köylü kızı olan Mu-Deok(Jung So-Min)’tur. Naksu bütün büyü gücünü kaybetmiş olarak Mu-Deok’un bedenine hapsolur.

Bir şekilde yolları kesişen Jang Uk ve Mu Deok garip bir ikili olurlar. Jang Uk, Mu-Deok’un öğretmeni olmasını ister. Mu-Deok ise Jang Uk’un nüfusunu kullanarak kılıcını geri almak ister. Jang Uk, onun Naksu olduğunu fark ettiği için, eğer gücünü geri kazanırsa mührünü kırabilecek güce sahip olduğunu bilmektedir. Yalnız kaldıklarında Mu-Deok usta, Jang Uk çıraktır. Etraflarında birileri varken ise, Jang Uk efendi, Mu-Deok hizmetçisidir.

Bu şekilde hikaye başlar. Dizide salya akıtacak kadar abartılı bir romantizm, süründürecek kadar dram yoktu. İzleyici olarak çok güzel bir lüks olduğunu söyleyebilirim. İzlediğiniz şeyden keyif alıyorsunuz ve akıp gidiyor. Ama sizi sömürmüyor. Jung So-Min tek kelime ile yıkmış geçmiş. Üç farklı karakteri, şiveyi pürüzsüzce bir araya getirmişti. Daha önce onu ilk kez “Because this is my first life” dizisinde izlemiştim. O dizide de dikkat çekiciydi ama akılda kalıcı olduğunu söyleyemem. Lee Jae-Wook ise bence bu dizi ile patlamasını yapmış olabilir. Onu ilk “Do do sol sol la la sol” gibi başarısız bir dizide izlediğim için ön yargılarım vardı. Bütün önyargılarımı yıktı geçti. Songrim ailesinin varisi Park Dang-Gu rolündeki Yoo In-Soo dizide en şaşırdığım isim oldu. All of us are dead dizisinde ölmek bilmeyen akıllı bir zombi vardı. Sinirden saçımızı başımızı yolmuştuk. Bitmek tükenmek bilmeyen enerjisi ile kendisinden nefret ettirmişti. Heh işte onu almışlar, şeker gibi, bal gibi bir karaktere koymuşlar. Birkaç bölüm sonra onun o olduğunu anladım. Benim için gerçekten şok ediciydi. Ve inanılmaz takdir ettim.

İkinci kısımda ise Jung So-Min dizide bu kadar tutmuş ve patlama yaratmışken yerine orijinal Naksu karakterini canlandıran Ko Yoon-Jung diziye giriyor. Bu konu açıklandığı zaman herkes gibi benim de tepkim olumsuzdu. Oyuncunun değiştirilmesi bana son derece gereksiz ve saçma geldi. Dizinin tam ortasında karakterlere bu kadar alışmışken hiç olacak şey değil diye düşündüm. Çok büyük yanılmışım. Hatta itiraf ediyorum, Jung So-Min’un Lee Jae-Wook’dan büyük olmasının beni rahatsız ettiğini fark ettim. Ko Yoon-Jung ile yaşı yaşına uygun bir partner olarak çok daha tatlı olmuşlardı. Yeni ikilinin kimyasını görünce bir önceki çift çok çabuk ikinci plana atıldı.  Onun yanı sıra Ko Yoon-Jung’un oyunculuğu takdir edilesiydi. Esas kız rolünü kaldırdı kucakladı götürdü maşallah. Aldığı sorumluluğun bilincindeydi.

Dizinin genel havası; ilk kısımda canlı renk paletleri, eğlenceli bir atmosfer ve küçük dertler varken ikinci kısmında karanlık bir atmosfer, depresif bir hava ve daha hayati mevzular dönmeye başladı. Oyuncular da bu değişimleri çok başarılı bir şekilde sırtlandılar. Birinci kısımda da ikinci kısımda da dizinin mizah yönünü sırtlanan isim prens Go Won rolü ile Shin Seung-Ho oldu. Dizinin joker elamanı gibiydi. Tatlı sert halleri, ciddi görünen şapşallıkları diziye süper eğlence katıyordu. Dizi genel olarak bütün beklentileri karşılıyordu. Ben ekran başından oldukça tatmin olarak ayrıldım. Bütün oyuncular son derece profesyoneldi. Çekimler pürüzsüzdü. Mekanlar şahaneydi. Enerjileri, konu dinamiği ile aldı yürüdüler.

Look, I'm not gonna lie. I started this drama for a very superficial reason: Kim Yoo Jung and Song Kang are one of the most gorgeous couples I've ever seen. And tbh, that's one of the things that kept me watching until the end. The first half was pretty fun, thanks to their will-they-won't-they dynamic and some really funny supporting characters and recurring gags. Unfortunately, it began to drag around the middle part, and then it got more and more boring with each passing episode. By the time the final episode came out, I no longer cared about the plot, the characters or anything else (although the ending itself was quite nice). With all that in mind, I can't help but think My Demon would have worked much better as a movie.

1. Choi Seungcheol as Lee Young-Joon in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim

The strong male character with childhood trauma who doesn’t know what to do with his feelings once he realises the love of his life, whom he had never confessed to, is leaving him screams Seungcheol to me. He’s awkward with his feelings, reacts poorly when hearing the news, is a true leader who silently burdens not only his trauma, but also his brother’s.

2. Yoon Jeonghan as Park Chang-ho in Big Mouth

I think, of all the people in the world who can deceive a prison full of inmates that they’re a criminal mastermind and you shouldn’t mess with them, no one else would compare to Jeonghan. The professional lawyer, who is framed and sent to prison, is a good person at heart, and helps other suppressed inmates and leads a revolution. Jeonghan is particularly quick to think on his feet, which matches the character’s energy.

3. Hong Joshua as Kang Tae- Moo in Business Proposal

A cold CEO who is super averse to dating and and is busy running his business meets and instantly falls in love with a girl who is posing as her friend on this blind date to get rid of him. He is devoted to his family, his passion for his company’s food products is only matched by our heroine. He’s a great cook and is also kind of nosy in his little brother’s love life.

4. Wen Junhui as An Min-Hyuk in Strong Girl Bong Soon

The cute, funny gaming company CEO who hires our Bong Soon as a bodyguard just screams Jun to me, both because of his passion for games and gaming development but also for his endearingly cute and shy demeanour and the sense of humour. Plus actor Jun deserves a fun, cool and handsome role like this, considering we might never get to see his c drama :((

5. Kwon Soonyoung as Jung Joon-hyung in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo

Ok so this is the latest drama I’ve watched and Joonhyung’s passion and commitment for swimming instantly reminded me of Hoshi and his passion for dance. A bonus factor is the fact that after seeing In the Soop S2, I can confirm his….ahem…abdominal area can easily pass for a swimmer’s.

6. Jeon Wonwoo as Cha Sung-hoon in Business Proposal

Yeah I don’t think I need to explain this.

7. Lee Jihoon as Wi Seung-Huen in Rookie Cops

I’m sorry but Woozi as a trainee cop along with an initial e2f2l storyline???? Sign me uppppppp… Plus, this character is like the ace trainee along with having daddy issues and a strong sense of morality that builds over time. Just writing this is making me crave a Woozi remake of this show.

8. Xu Minghao as Myul Mang in Doom at Your Service

Minghao, I think, is the best person in the world who can bring doom to the world while looking fucking stylish and having an angsty emo personality. Fuck the humans, what even do they have. Xu minghao is literally here to end us all. Plus the later developments in the show and the emotions this characters develops….I’ll cry watching if Minghao was Myul Mang. Also, I feel like Minghao is the most supernaturally member in Svt- you know the one who is into Tarot cards and palm readings.

9. Kim Mingyu as Ji U-Min in The Fabulous

Ngl, the Going Magazine episode was a big factor while giving Mingyu this character. This super talented fashion and street photographer, who sometimes struggles to find his aim and is stuck in the friend zone after breaking up with the female lead is such Gyu vibe honestly. This man is so supportive, encouraging…and might I say relentless?

10. Lee Seokmin as Baek Hee- Sung in Flower of Evil

The beauty of Dark! Seokmin is something to behold, a fantasy I will never give up on. A bright, perfect husband in every sense of the way on the surface with a dark past and even darker present….. is….so…..hot. And his wife is a police officer? Yup yup add it to the drama. Mars’ serial killer DK fic has arisen a fantasy in me that i don’t think is going away anytime soon. Plus I’m a sucker for complicated, grey characters whose layers are revealed slowly as the series progresses. He’s almost an anti- hero here.

11. Boo Seungkwan as Lee Seung-cheon in The Golden Spoon

Another grey character, probably the most complicated character on this list. I think, for me, our Boo is also the most emotionally complex and mature guy in seventeen so I think this character really suits him. Our lead guy, is born into poverty but changes his luck, along with his family’s, by switching lives with the richest guy in his school. Complications, along with consequences, haunt him.

12. Chwe Hansol as Goo Chang-seong in Hotel Del Luna

I’m sorry but Vernon as this character??? In great looking suits and constantly in service of ghosts to help them finish their last wishes and peacefully transition to afterlife along with having… probably the most emotional love story ever…..yeah I need a minute, or a week.

13. Lee Chan as Kim Do-ki in Taxi Driver

Taxi driver is probably my favourite kdrama till date. And Dino as the sexy vigilante who takes revenge for people who the system can’t help is such a sexy concept. Action hero Dino to the rescue! Plus the main character plays so many roles undercover and is so hilarious at times that Dino will fit perfectly in this character’s shoes.
