So, I saw this image on Facebook, and it was supposedly showing what Queen Nefertiti would have looked like in real life:
Tumblr media
Now, I thought this AI generated garbage was just truly terrible on a number of levels; first off, she looks wayyyyyy too modern - her makeup is very “Hollywood glamour”, she looks airbrushed and de-aged, and as far as I’m aware, Ancient Egyptians didn’t have mascara, glitter-based eyeshadows and lip gloss. Secondly, her features are exceptionally whitewashed in every sense - this is pretty standard for AI as racial bias is prevalent in feeding AI algorithms, but I genuinely thought a depiction of such a known individual would not exhibit such euro-centric features. Thirdly, the outfit was massively desaturated and didn’t take pigment loss into consideration, and while I *do* like the look of the neck attire, it's not at all accurate (plus, again, AI confusion on the detailing is evident).
So, this inspired me to alter the image on the left to be more accurate based off the sculpture’s features. I looked into Ancient Egyptian makeup and looked at references for kohl eyeliner and clay-based facial pigment (rouge was used on cheeks, charcoal-based powder/paste was used to darken and elongate eyebrows), and I looked at pre-existing images of Nefertiti, both her mummy and other reconstructions. While doing this, I found photos of a 3D scanned sculpture made by scientists at the University of Bristol and chose to collage the neck jewellery over the painting (and edited the lighting and shadows as best as I could).
Tumblr media
Something I see a lot of in facial recreations of mummies is maintaining the elongated and skinny facial features as seen on preserved bodies - however, fat, muscle and cartilage shrink/disappear post mortem, regardless of preservation quality; Queen Nefertiti had art created of her in life, and these pieces are invaluable to developing an accurate portrayal of her, whether stylistic or realistic in nature.
Tumblr media
And hey, while I don't think my adjustments are perfect (especially the neck area), I *do* believe it is a huge improvement to the original image I chose to work on top of.
I really liked working on this project for the last few days, and I think I may continue to work on it further to perfect it. But, until then, I hope you enjoy!

The Leper Saint

another art that I abandoned (June) and just finished up. the little face veil was supposed to be more opaque so that it would actually serve its purpose (lol) but I spent too much time on the face to just cover it up so much ❤️‍🩹

Late night sketch of Mozart from memory, because I love him. One would think I’d draw him more, as obsessed with him as I am. I used his own painted reference of the deformity in his left ear. Apparently he also had a little earring? It’s cute.
Mozart knew he was not particularly attractive so he made up for this by taking fastidious care of his appearance, being funny, and often placing his talent on display before himself.

A memory to cherish (Charles II of Spain fanart)
Tumblr media
Authors note: A story based on fact
In October 1700, Charles II's health continued to decline. By this time, he had lost most of his loved ones, and the court was in a state of panic regarding the issue of succession. The days of joy were behind him; he struggled to walk and could hardly travel. His problems with the country escalated, and his wife's attitude only added to his distress. All he could do now was attempt to address the crisis that Spain was facing. However, he felt overwhelmed, bearing the weight of his country's fate on his shoulders. He knew he needed peace of mind before making any decisions.
One afternoon, after his prayers, he walked around the palace, gazing out the windows and strolling down the hallways." I used to run and play here," he thought, reminiscing about the moments in his life that had brought him happiness. As he ventured downstairs to check the rooms, one room stood out. The room showcases a valuable item: the mini-carriage. He gently caresses it, reminiscing about his childhood.

Annette Drevon: cantinière, soldier
Tumblr media
"In 1880, visitors to the markets of Les Halles in Paris might have noticed an especially striking woman sitting at her vegetable stall. In her mid-fifties, with black hair and unwrinkled skin, she had an expression of ‘courage and energy’, which was perhaps unsurprising, given her past. Annette Drevon was a cantinière in the French army, a woman officially deputised to sell food and drink to the soldiers. At the Battle of Magenta in 1859, Annette was attached to the second regiment of Zouaves. During the battle two Austrian soldiers seized the regimental flag. Annette got it back: she killed the first soldier with a sabre and the second with two shots from her revolver. The regiment’s colonel pinned his own Cross of the Legion of Honour to her chest in honour of her actions.
Annette was still serving during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, where she shot another soldier, this time a German who either insulted her or attempted to steal her Cross; she was sentenced to death but pardoned by Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse, and returned to France. She later received a small pension from Marshal MacMahon, who had commanded the who had commanded the French troops at Magenta, which she used to set up her vegetable stall.
Annette Drevon’s story is a useful reminder that for well over 400 years the normal battlefield was full of ordinary women, who were not only essential to the conduct of war but also demonstrated bravery, physical strength and the ability to stand up to tough conditions – all the things military leaders of the late twentieth century fretted that women could not do."

she’s very disappointed with him (he purposely wrote queen of the night to have a large range of the scale to make fun of the opera singer who was singing it, as she had a tendency to keep her chin down for lower notes and in the air for high notes. this would cause her to “bob like a chicken” on stage)
he’s so silly i love both of them esp his sister maria anna 💞💞💞

I’m sorry I can’t be Claire from Outlander 😔
My first little comic lol (based on a meme but instead of leprosy it was about electricity) the idea was better in my head but I tried to depict it as best as I could

Fanart of Philip V of Spain
I illustrated him savoring his dinner after a long day. He took a bite of his steak but found it chewy and dry. He instructed a servant to remove the steak and chose to eat pastries and tarts instead.
Dedicated to my friend, @philippeducdanjou, @chateau-de-gamin and @felipe-v-fanblog
I hope you all liked it, Thank you
