If I or another human being had reached out and grabbed the railing after falling nearly thirty feet, I might have lost my fingers or my arm. But Helen was built differently. She hung there, her arm a few feet longer than it should’ve been, a limp Gladys Shipman dangling from her other hand.
"she's built different" funniest possible way to phrase that. helen "built different" ibbot

yellowjackets characters and their names
Just for fun. It's orange because I like orange (also just to highlight the actual names). I started this months ago and just kept it in my drafts
(Bonus names are the unofficial middle names that the cast kind of pitched)
Characters with Full Names
Benjamin (son of the right hand/son of the south - lost his right leg) + Scott (from Scotland)
Charlotte (man/army/now synonymous to king or queen because of Charles the Great) + Matthews (Gift of Yahweh) + Bonus: Isobel (means pledged to God)
Jackie (if her name is just Jackie then she would have the same origin as Shauna's name which is in the same family tree as John meaning Yahweh is gracious; if her name is actually Jacqueline her name means holder of the heel, coming in second, second to die and always following Shauna) + Taylor (from tailor, means to cut, but tailors don't just cut they stitch together, and everything went downhill after Jackie died)
Javi (short for Javier/Xavier, means "the new house" - as in he found somewhere else to live) + Martinez (means son of Martin which came from Mars, the Roman war god. Mars really just means "male," apparently)
Misty (could not find the meaning of the name, which fits because she's always trying to find her place - or simply means cloud or mist, the one that obscured the rescue of the team by destroying the flight transmitter) + Quigley (means untidy, because honestly she is a messy bitch and we love her for it) + Bonus: Elaine (possibly coming from Helen, meaning torch. A famous Helen is Helen of Troy/Sparta whose kidnapping sparked the Trojan War)
Natalie (Christmas) + Scatorccio (according to the fandom wiki, Scatorccio doesn't have a real meaning but it could be derived from the Italian word 'catorcio' meaning wreck)
Shauna (yahweh is gracious, from the same family tree as the name John, closely related to the name Jackie but apparently it could also mean Yahweh is merciful) + Shipman (mariner, but probably named after Harold Shipman whose a serial killer) + Bonus: Marie (no one knows it's true meaning but speculated to be either "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness" or "wished for child")
Taissa (could mean bandage [Taissa -> Taisa -> Taisiya -> Thais]) + Turner (occupational, someone who turns a lathe / could originate from tournoieur someone in charge of or participates in tournaments / could originate from turnhare - a fast runner, or can outrun a hare; also if referring to fast runner, a synonym of which is swift [see: Vanessa] ) + Bonus: Audrey (means noble strength)
Travis (variant of Travers, meaning "to cross," only one of the males to actually cross the line and essentially be part of the Yellowjackets) + Martinez (son of Martin which came from Mars, the Roman war god. Mars really just means "male," apparently)
Vanessa (a made up name by Jonathan Swift, after his lover Esther Vanhomrigh) + Anne (means favor or grace) + Palmer (means pilgrim from palm tree because pilgrims to the Holy Land bring palm fronds)
Characters without Full Names
Akilah (arabic in origin, originates from Aqil which is intelligent/wise and she is)
Gen (if from Genevieve could mean family/clan/lineage + wife/woman)
Kristen (originating from Christian, means "a Christian" and honestly relating that to Jesus Christ and the fact that she literally fucking disappeared after being pushed off a cliff is insaane) + Crystal (means ice, like where she probably died if she is dead at the end of s2)
Laura (from laurel which was given to victors/winners) + Lee (can mean either woodland/clearing or shelter/protection/haven)
Mari (no one actually knows what Mari is short for which is fitting because whatever name it could be short for Marie/Maria/Miriam, no one knows it's true meaning but speculated to be either "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness" or "wished for child")
Melissa (bee, I think that's enough)
Rachel (ewe as in lamb as in the thing that always gets sacrificed in the bible) + Goldman (means gold + man; probably someone who traded gold)
Other Characters
Jeff (from Jeffrey/Geoffrey could mean foreigner/territory or peace +
Sadecki (Polish and could come from the word "sad" meaning "orchard" or "garden")
Callie (just Callie means beautiful regardless if it is short for anything, honestly could kind of reference how often Callie gets compared to Jackie)

THE LADY IN ERMINE
1922
Tumblr media
The Lady in Ermine is a musical in three acts with a book by Frederick Lonsdale and Cyrus Wood, music by Jean Gilbert and Alfred Goodman, and lyrics by Harry Graham and Cyrus Wood. It is based on the 1919 operetta Die Frau im Hermelin by Rudolph Schanzer and Ernest Welisch.
It was directed by Charles Sinclair, choreographed by Jack Mason and Allan K. Foster, and produced by J.J. Shubert, with scenic design by Watson Barratt, and costumes by Mme. Routon.
Tumblr media
The musical premiered in Atlantic City NJ at the Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk. However, this was no usual opening night. The leading lady did not show up and the understudy had to go on, unrehearsed, and muddle through the first performance.
Tumblr media
Later it was discovered that leading lady Eleanor Painter had creative differences with the production team, insisting that one of the three acts be totally re-written. She was guaranteed this would occur, but when opening night came and the act was still not re-written, she walked out, claiming that she had a nervous breakdown from the anxiety.
Tumblr media
She left Atlantic City and recuperated in Lakewood NJ while the show went on without her.
Tumblr media
There was rumor on the road that Painter would return to the cast. She was a Broadway veteran and had the distinction of having an operetta written for her by Victor Herbert (Princess Pat, 1915). But when the musical finally pulled in to the Great White Way on October 2, 1922, Painter was not among the cast.
Tumblr media
Her role was taken by Helen Shipman. But Painter wasn’t the only one to leave the “Lady” by the side of the road...
Tumblr media
After Atlantic City, the role of Marianna was recast with Asbury Park, New Jersey, singer Wilda Bennett for the show’s next stops in Newark and onto Broadway.
Tumblr media
Bennett and Walter Woolf in “The Lady in Ermine”.
Tumblr media
The producers had originally wanted the show to play their new Jolson’s 59th Street Theater, but it ended up berthing at the Ambassador Theatre instead.
Tumblr media
In January 1923, it moved to the Century Theatre for the last four months of its 238 performance run.
Tumblr media
It was then that scandal once again touched “Ermine” when ensemble member Arthur C. Budd was arrested in a raid on Greenwich Village nightclubs. It is said that Budd appeared in drag in “Ermine” and although not in drag at the time of his arrest, was known by the name Rosebud. Such raids on gay gathering spots were typical of the time period, but Budd was let go from the show just the same. He was back in the ensemble of another show by May 1923.
Tumblr media
The third tenant at the 59th Street Theatre ended up being another operetta, one with equal success, Blossom Time. Ironically, Blossom Time had transferred from the Ambassador, and after its stint at the 59th Street, like The Lady in Ermine, also moved to the Century.
Tumblr media
Simultaneously, the London version (titled The Lady of the Rose) continued its run.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The show produced one breakout hit which was recorded: “When Hearts Are Young” - a fox trot.
Tumblr media
After closing on Broadway, the show embarked on a tour.
Tumblr media
Hollywood first filmed the story in 1927, although the film is now considered lost.
Tumblr media
The story was remade as an early talkie musical in Technicolor, Bride of the Regiment (1930), also released by First National and also considered a lost film.
Tumblr media
It was remade again in 1948 by 20th Century-Fox as That Lady in Ermine, starring Betty Grable and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.
Tumblr media
Things came full circle when the film opened in Atlantic City in 1948!

Born To Kill COMPLETE SERIES 2005-2016
“Going back to the age-old Nature vs Nurture debate, a good way to think about it is that genetics provide an individual with a spectrum and the individual’s environment, developmental and otherwise, determines where you lie on it. A predisposition may lie dormant for eternity, but feed it a stressful environment and increased risk factors such as malnourishment and trauma, and it will manifest. Clinical facts must be tempered with ethical concerns when applying science to society.” Source

Marvel Star Tom Hiddleston is a well known Hollywood name, but few people know about his connection to Liverpool.
Loki actor Tom was born in Westminster, London, but he actually has historic Liverpool links, discovered by Find My Past researchers.
His connection to Liverpool began with this his 3x maternal great-grandparents, wealthy German cotton merchants who settled in Toxteth in the 1860s.
Tom’s 3x great grandfather, Friedrich Julius Jacob Hubert Servaes was born in Dusseldorf in June 1831. His wife, Johanne Helene Wilckens was born in Hamburg in 1838.
In the early 1850s, Freidrich, who preferred to go by Julius, travelled to Liverpool to work in the “merchants & bankers” firm, J. H. Schroder & Co.
Julius, the company’s chief clerk ran the Liverpool branch alongside Charles Pickering, a local man from the family of Pickering Brothers , who were well-known Liverpool corn merchants.
The pair proved to be incredibly successful and by the end of the decade, Schroder & Co was the fourth largest recipient of consignments of cotton in the city. As a result, Julius was made an associate partner in 1856.
Life in Liverpool
Census records reveal that by 1871, Julius and his wife, now going by Ellen, lived in a large house at Haymans Green in West Derby along with their four Liverpool born children, Ellen’s brother and five domestic servants. The full household included:
· Julius, then 39
· Ellen, 32 years old
· 10 year old son Francis
· 7 year old Julius Max (Tom’s X2 great grandfather)
· 5 year old Susan
· 2 year old Alfred,
· Ellen’s 23 year old brother Herman Wickens, a gem merchant
· The children’s German governess and nurse, 31 year old Margaret Spethman
· Scottish cook, 23 year old Catherine Johnston
· 28 year old Welsh servant, Mary Wade
· And two house maids from Cheshire, 24 year old Catherine Davies
· And 24 year old Annie Eaves
The grand houses in Haymans green were all home to accomplished wealthy individuals, with the Servaes’ neighbours including a surgeon, Sir Richard Glazebrook, from the well-known Liverpool Glazebrook family and Solicitor George Layton and his Australian Wife.
By 1881, the family were living at Holly Lea House on Aigburth Drive, Toxteth Park.
Three more children had been born to Julius and Ellen, eight-year-old Helen, five-year-old Tonie and three-year-old Julius Junior.
Eldest son Francis was studying medicine at the University of Liverpool and four live-in servants were also in the household.
This included the children’s nurse, Alice Clutterbuck from London, the family’s cook Caroline Williams, waitress Mary White, housemaid Lucy Akers and German sewing maid Pauline Mogler.
This appeared to be another affluent address with their neighbours including architects, merchants, solicitors and landowners.
As a well-respected figure in the community, Julius can be found frequently in local newspapers.
This includes marriage announcements for his children, reports on his involvement with the Liverpool Society of Friends of Foreigners in Distress, where he was appointed vice-chancellor in 1899, and even a brief mention of his death in 1902.
Julius and Ellen lived at Holly Lea until their deaths. Julius passed away in 1902 and Ellen in 1903, both dying at home. They can still be found at the address in 1901.
All of the children except for 25-year-old Tonie had left home and 70-year old-Julius was still working in international trade, with his occupation listed as “commission agent”.
The next generation
Tom’s X2 great grandfather, Julius Maximus Servaes (known as Max) was the second child of Julius and Ellen. He was born in Walton on the Hill in September 1863 and was baptised at St Saviour’s Church on September 17th.
Records reveal that like his father before him, he went on to become a successful merchant at the Liverpool Corn Exchange.
In April 1890 he married Constance Violet Coltart, the daughter of a rope manufacturer from Ruthin, Wales, in the parish of St Michael in the Hamlet, Toxteth.
The pair set up an elegant home at number 3 Parkfield Road, Toxteth Park complete with a live-in cook, nurse and housemaid.
The couple had at least five children;
· Nora, born in 1892
· Reginald Maxwell born in 1894 (Tom’s great grandfather)
· Phyllis, born in 1895
· Herbert, born in 1901
· Audrey Helena, born in 1904
Census records reveal that in 1901, the children were living with their aunt Susan Florence (Max’s younger sister) and her husband William Marshall (a wealthy chemical manufacturer) at Danehurst, Ullet Road, Toxteth Park.
By 1911 Max and Constance were still living at 3 Parkfield Road with 10-year-old Herbert and seven-year-old Audrey as well as the family cook, nursemaid and housekeeper.
By 1939, Max and Constance had moved to 22 Beechwood Road, Cressington before retiring to Contance’s hometown of Ruthin. Max died there in 1947 and Constance in 1952.
Reginald Maxwell Servaes (Tom’s great-grandfather) - born Toxteth park, July 25th 1893
Service records reveal Reginald joined the Royal Navy in 1906 and the 1911 census record shows him serving as a mid-shipman aboard HMS Indefatigable.
He became a sub-lieutenant in 1914 and steadily climbed through the ranks, serving in both world wars.
His naval records even provide insights into his character, describing him as: "A most efficient officer and lieutenant, an excellent leader with tact and good influence, pleasant personality.
‘Influential leader, good intelligence, much tact, powerful personality, physically fit, gentleman in the best sense of the word, very strongly seen as likely to do well in the highest ranks”.
Tumblr media
After the war he moved to Chelsea and married Hilda A E Jonhston in 1919 in Croyden.
He became commanding officer of the repair ship HMS Resource in 1937 and Director of Local Defence at the Admiralty in 1938.
He served in World War II as commanding officer of the cruiser HMS London from 1940 and saw action with the arctic convoys before becoming Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff in 1943.
After the War he became Rear Admiral commanding 2nd Cruiser Squadron in the British Pacific Fleet in 1945 and Flag Officer commanding the Reserve Fleet in 1947 before retiring in 1948.
He retired to Sussex and died in Cirencester in 1978, leaving behind an estate valued at £47,823, which is roughly £280,000 in today's money

Then [Helen] pulled at muscles in her face. A rictus grin, too-wide, until it looked like her mouth would tear open.
‘Melancholy’ and I approached the door.  Shipman was slow, carrying Helen.  She didn’t complain any further, though. “Good girl,” Helen purred.  “Keep going.” “I don’t need the encouragement,” Shipman said. “Pat on the head for you,” Helen said.
HELEN THE PERFECT GIRL THAT YOU ARE
It was a bad joke in stage plays, one child atop another’s shoulders, trying to be an adult. But Melancholy had a heavy black raincoat, and Helen was an actress. She already wore Melancholy’s scalp.
ohhh i remember hearing about this before reading. i thought they were just going to distend helen's body atrociously to make her taller but that works great too. helen really does steal the show every time she's onscreen....freak crocodile girl who just murdered someone cutely, scalped them, and is now going to be doing the two kids in a trenchcoat bit pretending to be them

Many of the Earl Carroll Girls featured in the film were authentic cast members from Carroll's stage show, which ran on Broadway from November 1933 to March 1934. These cast members were brought out to Hollywood from New York especially for this film, and many stayed to pursue film careers.  Earl Carrol Girls who appeared in the stage version of Murder at the Vanities, but not this film version, included Dudone Blumier, Eunice Coleman, Muriel Evans, Evalyn Knapp, Helene Madison, Lorna Rode and Marion Semle. Also in the cast was a Ruth Mann, who was probably Helen Mann.
Tumblr media
The film was based on a Broadway production of the same name, but completely rewritten for the screen and with all new musical numbers.

In “The Audition” (ILL S1;E6) aired on November 19, 1951 Lucy says to Ricky:  “I’ll bet if Ziegfeld or Earl Carroll had seen me, they’d sign me up like that!” She then puts a lampshade on her head and struts about the room in a moment recycled from the (then) unaired pilot.

This film contains a song and dance number called “Sweet Marijuana”. It got past the censors because at the time the film was made, the drug was not illegal. Today, many prints omit this production number all together.

The film also introduced the standard “Cocktails for Two” by Arthur Johnston and Sam Coslow.

Gimbels in New York did a promotion in connection with the film, selling Mojud Clari-phane stockings using images of some of the Earl Carroll Girls. Sadly, Lucille Ball is not among them!

The film was a box office disappointment for Paramount.

This gown, first designed for Olivia De Havilland to wear as Catherine Sloper in the 1949 film The Heiress is said in the film to be “Cherry Red.” However, it was very common for costumes in black and white films to not truly be the same color described, especially as red often appeared black on black and white film. It makes sense that the gown would have been made a different color, and when it appeared again in the 1958 film Vertigo , we can see that the gown is a light purple with gold accents.
The gown was used numerous times in Vertigo, both on people and in one of Hollywood’s most famous props - the painting at the center of the film. Several paintings were made for the production including an unused version with Vera Miles as Carlotta, where she is very clearly wearing the dress. The dress appeared in the final painting for the film, as well as the painting replica of Midge Wood, as played by Barbara Bel Geddes. The dress appears in person in the film as well, being worn by Joanne Genthon as a woman hired to be “Carlotta.”
After that, the gown went on to be used three times in Bonanza. It was used two times in 1961, first in the episode The Courtship, on Julie Adams as Helen Layton, and then in The Countess on Margaret Hayes as Lady Linda Chadwick. In 1962 it was worn by Nina Shipman as Trudy Coombs-Harker in the episode The Mountain Girl.

“We’re not done,” Shipman said.
“We’re done,” I said, my voice low.
Both in the sense that you need to leave and in the sense that they know about the boxes.
“Are you okay?” Lillian asked, cutting in.
“Not very, gunshot,” I said.  “They’re bad too.  They need help.  Three gases, from one of the assassins.  Glue, don’t touch them, something flesh-eating, definitely don’t touch them, and a third.  Might be poison.  Jamie’s coughing.”
“Because blood keeps dripping down the back of my throat from my nose,” Jamie said.
“They need help,” Lillian agreed.
Not long now til Lillian voices confusion about who saw to Sy’s gunshot wound earlier, I’m sure.
“Coach,” Gordon said.  “There was one-”
He stopped, craning his head.  “Come on!”
We moved as fast as we were able, but at least I was able to let the others look after Jamie and Helen, while I stumbled along on my lonesome.
Gordon was talking to a coach driver.  As we approached, the man opened the side door.
As a group, we climbed inside.
“Hospital it is,” the man said, before closing the door.  The latch clicked.
A hospital outside of Whitney? Because checking into a Whitney hospital seems like a great way to corner yourselves.
“How do we activate your project?” I asked.
“We’re not,” Shipman said.  “It’s too early.”
“You were supposed to be nearly done.”
Well, there goes the final hope of accomplishing that sabotage. Hurray!

about hero.
hero is very obviously tori shipman’s baby, she’s loud, she’s blonde and she said she’s a bisexual having a panic attack.
tori mostly raised hero alone, with help from her friends. she’s also very close to her grandma, grandpa and nana helen.
bit of a wild child though, has no idea what she’s gonna do with her life - also is determined to give her mom gray hairs.
isn’t sure what she’s majoring in yet but lmao, she’ll get there.
isn’t a cheerleading fan but big on parkour, very big - may have gotten into a few mishaps based on it but OH WELL.
