Begrudgingly awarding Shawn Spencer the title of most believable amateur multilingual detective in fiction. Everyone wants their guy to know 8 languages without showing the long "sounding like a buffoon in front of strangers as you haphazardly construct an idea via partial knowledge, constant malapropisms, and desperate pantomime" phase before the sexy sexy fluency. Meanwhile the process of shameless-buffoonery-until-breakthrough IS the standard episode structure of Psych.

vaguely fascinated by osana sov's naming choices. she chose for her daughter a name that can mean "bitter (strength)" or "lady" in two ancient languages (hebrew and aramaic) and for her son a name that means "old friend" in another ancient language (old english)
like every other golden age character has a name that's pretty normal by our standards, which tbh includes mara, then osana just names her other kid uldwyn. then again, even osana's name is either a variant of the hebrew hosanna or after an obscure and possibly fictitious old english princess-saint whose name means something along the lines of "godly solitude", so i suppose mara might be considered the odd one out
#destiny 2#osana sov#ngl i lean towards the old english meaning for osana bc it's very fitting given she lives in the wilderness w uldren in the distributary#also want to acknowledge osana's name could be japanese (“childhood friend”) but given her kids have names from hebrew and old english#it seems pretty likely that her name has one or both of the same origins#either way osana was def a history nerd btwn this and her mentioning weregilds unprompted in the marasenna#though it's very interesting to me that most of what we *see* of osana in her in the context of her motherhood#even though she's also an extremely renowned negotiator and mara mentions osana also had premonitions (presumably of the collapse)#...there's a vague irony that osana and mara (and crow) had truthful visions but uldren's were purely a deceit by riven#also i have feelings abt the fact that mara and osana were the only ones to remain w their names unchanged amongst the original awoken#(to our knowledge at least) since mara whose namesake comes from the book of ruth where naomi changed her name to that out of grief#and mara changed basically every other person aboard that ship consciously or otherwise#but did she change her mother/let the transformation change her? idk it's been a lingering thought in my brain since forsaken#anyway this is inspired by me trying to figure out what the revenants' watchtower is guarding#i don't think it's the pre-existing one to the dreaming city bc the scorn are already there#notably all the lore calls it *the* watchtower but the livestream mentioned *a* watchtower so i think it must be a different one#my spinfoil hope is that it's guarding the entrance to the distributary but also interamnia (awoken capital) would be cool#edit: should prob mention i'm assuming uld- equals ald- (old) but like. fairly simple assumption given everything

Bucky being really involved with the youth at his synagogue. The kids always seem drawn to him and he finds himself roped into helping out with youth activities, but soon finds it’s something he enjoys. Teaching them to make challah the way his mother taught him. Helping the kids with their Hebrew studies. He’s a valuable resource of Jewish history. Sometimes he’ll talk to the teens about the war because they’re older and understand, but none of them ever press him to talk about his experiences. What the kids seem to be mainly interested in is how Jewish life has changed for kids since Bucky was a kid. They want to know how their shul compares to his, what games he played, and hear the stories he can pass on about living in a Jewish immigrant community. He often finds the kids ask the questions but the grown ups in the room are listening just as intently.

i want to properly hit people with the keykid dalia lore but unfortunately i’m a perfectionist and i believe text should be accompanied with pictures in order to have a stronger impact which means i gotta draw which means it’ll never happen
#i can provide the gist in text though#long story short there’s a kind of meta thing going on there#in reference to the fact that as opposed to everyone else’s keykids who actually existed when khux was online#and had their own personalities before the story was complete#whereas i came in late and made an oc for a story that was already long over#hence like i made her knowing she would die. doomed from the start#so the meta aspect there is that she’s kind of like aware that she’s in a story already over. she knows the future#whether that’s her own strange power or that she got a look at the book of prophecies somehow#but she’s too scared to try interfering with fate so she willingly plays along with the role that destiny has for her#she doesn’t want to risk messing stuff up#she hides the fact that she knows all this from pretty much everyone and it messes with her#for example she is already aware of strelitzia’s existence (strel isn’t that good at hiding lol. but dalia is also just observant)#she would love to say hi but she knows it shouldn’t happen#i imagine like fast forward to later people find out she knew about everything. and particularly lauriam finds out she knew strel’s fate#which has him furious bc why didn’t dalia do anything about it?#simple. because it was meant to be this way. as much as it breaks her heart#’dalia’ appaaaaarently. don’t quote me on this. is some pagan lithuanian goddess of fate/destiny#or something along those lines#it also means like ‘branch’ or ‘bough’ in hebrew/some similar language so that’s interesting ig#but i was going with the fate thing#just in general she’s a very shy and introspective girl. polite and reserved#loves cutesy wholesome things like gardening and reading#and like. Soul Crushing Knowledge#kingdom hearts#khux#oc: dalia

The more I learn about the history of the middle east in general, the more I realise that the "Israel-Palestine conflict" is actually just a group killing their own fellow shared ethnic group who are "too brown".
Hebrews and Arabs both originate from Phoenicians, aka "Abraham's descendents" according to their respective oral stories and passed on histories. They are from the same place and people. However, there is a narrative that twists this and claims that Arabs were "always an outside force that invaded", when the various groups within that ethnicity always had their share of cooperation and conflict in various stages of history. Just like, say, the various groups in France. They were of the same group and no particular ethnicity had no more of a "claim" to the land than the other, they just had their beef and eventually integrated.
So when I see "but the Arabs are colonisers" I can't help but ask; what is a colonisers to you? Seriously. If colonisation means "any conflict in the past between a shared group from the same place" every single group would be colonisers. There's no such thing as "an innocent conflict" where atrocities weren't committed by either side. So please get that out of your head if you want to say "but the Arabs did X, Y, Z to the Hebrews so it's colonisation and they don't belong in A, B or C areas". That's just not how colonisation works. It's like calling TERF or cis a slur when they're not. Conflict between the same people from the same area is, yeah, a conflict hit not colonisation. However, a people who are from a completely different place who want to erase an ethnic group and take over their culture, erase their history and get rid of their physical features? Yeah, that's what colonisation is. It's genocide with the aim to erase a specific group or culture and take it and the land over. For example, the British in the Middle East.
The problem with calling Arabs "colonisers" is not only is it completely historically wrong, they're from the same place and have the same origins as the Hebrews, but they (like Palestinian Jews) have been their since before the British came. Compared to European Jews who came later on after having lived in Europe (and became European as that is genuinely a part of their culture and ethnicity as well and shouldn't be erased or forgotten, that's also cultural erasure of Germanic, Polish, etc traditions passed on) and, sure, do have origins there *as well* but it needs to be understood that they, specifically Zionists, are a part of the British colonial project aimed at killing *both* Arabs and Jews. The point isn't to help Jews against a colonisers from the first few centuries (sorry to tell you everyone, but no, the Ottoman Empire, Baylon and the Pharaohs literally do not exist anymore, like how Italy isn't the Roman Empire by default because that's where Rome is), but a group of people who've just been living there for the past few centuries and generations who just want to live. The problem is, they haven't been allowed that and propaganda keeps being pushed that completely jumps around historical facts like, for example, Jews (ethnically speaking) were not always Jews but the Ancient Hebrews, aka, Phoenicians, aka where Arabs came from ethically. They are the same people, just who moved to different areas and developed different cultures and languages. Sort of like, you know, every other nation with specific dialects for specific regions and different cultures and folk stories depending on where you go.
The point is, so much of Jewish history is actively being erased to "protect the Jews" by...commuting cultural genocide of the Jews and Arabs. It ignores the actual impact of Nazism within Israel's formation and history, how much it influenced policy, how Jews who were "too visibly Phoenicians" aka appeared too Jewish or arabic or middle eastern in appearance were deemed as "weaker" and "lesser" for my surviving the holocaust and used as a reason to deny rights to both Jews and Arabs who were too visibly Semitic. It ignores how antisemetic Israel is towards Jewishness and how utterly antisemetic Islamophobia is because they are literally from the same origin and, yes, hatred and fear of one does carry into hatred and fear of the other. So much of the propaganda and denialism of history happening right now is a direct response to dear and hatred of "big noses", "brown skin" and people deemed as too middle eastern because they, just like in World War II, World War I and beforehand, antisemetism is the backbone of British imperialism and conquest of the middle east (yes, this also means a targeting of Arabs and Jews as people who look a specific way). And yes I'm annoyed and yes this is a ramble that's probably not very coherent, but damn I'm so sick and tired of misinformation and the twisting of everything to suit this narrative of "Arabs versus Jews" as if they aren't both just Semites who are being collectively oppressed, erased and reinvented by the west to suit western ends.

The phrase "knowledge is power" takes on a profound significance these days, as we observe an unsettling trend among students who, driven by the currents of popular opinion and social media, are engaging in "protests" fueled by misinformation and, disturbingly, anti-Semitism.
It is critical to step back and consider the true essence and responsibility that comes with this power.
Knowledge isn’t just a collection of facts, but a torch that illuminates the darkness, a tool for making informed decisions, and a bridge towards understanding diverse perspectives.
Unfortunately, these days, this powerful tool is abused and misused, leading not to enlightenment, but to hatered.
When students, who will shape the future of our society, protest based on twisted facts and propaganda, it raises a serious question about the foundations upon which they are building their beliefs and actions.
Your voice is indeed your power, but it must be fueled by genuine understanding and insight.
As people, there is both a right and a responsibility to seek out knowledge that goes beyond the superficial layers often presented by social media or specific narratives.
This means engaging directly with a range of sources, questioning popular opinions, and being prepared to adjust your views in light of new, reliable information.
True empowerment comes from the ability to think critically, to differentiate between opinion and fact, and to understand the historical and cultural contexts of the issues at hand.
It involves developing as a person by interacting with people from different cultures and backgrounds, not to confirm your preconceived notions, but to challenge them and grow from the experience.
Engaging with knowledge is about building a more informed, empathetic, and cohesive society. We owe it to ourselves and to each other to strive for a deeper understanding and to use our voices not just to speak, but to speak truth.
So, as you navigate through the noise, remember: your voice is your power, but it's your responsibility to ensure it’s powered by truth and understanding.

My favorite genre of book is the “list book,” where the contents are essentially one long, cut-and-dry list of information, organized in alphabetical order with no embellishments whatsoever, other than diagrammatic pictures which show the meaning of something. This includes dictionaries in English, foreign language-to-English dictionaries, encyclopedias on various subjects, toxic chemical transportation handbooks for truckers, etc.

Small thing but I think Nona hears Kevin's name as "Kevin" is because all the older kids know what their names mean, so that comes across to her. When she and Hot Sauce are together during naptime, it sounds like Nona says Born in the Morning's name in the wrong language.
Meanwhile Kevin has no clue, so the name just comes across as two random syllables

my favourite thing to lie about is sometimes i will just tell people i’m bilingual. like if you aren’t fluent but know a language that isn’t very commonly spoken, there’s a 90% chance that you will be the only person in the room with working knowledge of that language. make a grammar mistake? who’s gonna correct you? this never fails to work and makes me laugh every time

Jews are not the only Semites.
Although the term "anti-Semite" has been used since the 19th century to describe hatred towards people of the Jewish faith, it is not etymologically appropriate, as Semites also encompasses other groups.
The word "anti-Semitism" appeared in March 1879 in a pamphlet by author Wilhelm Marr, suggested as a replacement for "Judenhaß" meaning hatred of Jews.
The use of the term "anti-Judaism" would prove more appropriate to describe manifestations of discrimination against individuals of the Jewish faith.
