FNAF Theory: William Afton’s True Motivations

Since today is Five Nights At Freddy’s 10th Anniversary, I will engage with something that a lot of the fans have already done a lot over the years, but that I still haven’t tried yet: theorizing about the franchise’s ever-so-confusing lore. 

Yep. That’s my first ever FNAF theory, and it’s all about William Afton.

Since the Purple Guy stopped being a nameless serial killer and became an actual character in the series, there’s been a lot of speculation about William’s true motivations. 

Regardless of game, book, or film universe, this man already has: 

Killed five children and stuffed them inside animatronic suits; 

Killed his business partner’s daughter and left her body rotting in an alleyway; 

Built gigantic animatronics designed to lure, trap, and kill children;

Built an underground bunker with dozens of animatronic monsters;

Created small disks that emit frequencies that cause hallucinations;

Created a hallucination gas with the same effects as the Fear gas from the Batman mythos;

Created a special room in his underground bunker designed to give horrific nightmares to children;

And we still don’t know why he did all these things, in any universe, be it game, book, or film.

One of the biggest mysteries of this franchise is why William Afton kills children. Over the years, there have been a lot of theories trying to explain his murder tendencies:

He kills children to exact revenge on Fazbear Entertainment;

He wants revenge against Henry Emily, his business partner;

He wants to revive his dead son, so he’s experimenting on children trying to discover the secrets of the soul and the afterlife;

This is a huge mystery, and it affects a lot of how people think about this franchise, this story, and these characters. It even affects how people see the main timeline of events.

But I think I have an answer: 

William Afton kills children because he seeks the secrets of immortality.

Please don’t laugh, but I believe Five Nights at Freddy’s at its core is a story about a mad scientist trying to transfer souls to robots and gain immortality. 

I know it’s crazy. It sounds ridiculous since the setting originally started to be just a haunted Chuck E. Cheese. 

I don’t even think Scott Cawthon started with this in mind. But I think over time, the franchise shifted into a weird mix between soft sci-fi and horror, and the main killer evolved to match this shift in genre.

Notice how over time FNAF gained: underground bunkers, sentient computer viruses, killer robots, robots with an AI so advanced they are as sentient as humans, and finally, robots so advanced that they are almost indistinguishable from humans.

This is all what FNAF is about. This same pattern is everywhere. First, it infested the games, then it spread through the books. I wouldn’t be surprised if the movies were affected soon. 

FNAF is sci-fi horror now, and you can see how this genre shift influenced how William Afton was depicted. 

Through FNAF 1 to FNAF 4, the killer was just that, a killer. A random serial killer who sought his victims from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. That was the reason why he was just the Purple Guy. 

Sister Location was the game where the franchise started shifting its gears to sci-fi. It was the installment that introduced William Afton into the games, and he was introduced as an engineer type that secretly produced animatronics to lure and capture children. This is the installment that gave us the underground bunker, and several pieces of evidence that weird testings happened there in the past. 

Then the books continued flowing, and they continued with this sci-fi shift.

William Afton was first introduced as a character in the Silver Eyes trilogy, and throughout this book trilogy, you can see Afton distancing himself from the serial killer, and becoming more of an evil scientist. 

In the last book, William Afton is half-robot and able to create murderous robots and discs that give him illusion powers. He even expressively says that he’s after Remnant, the liquid metal that is a fusion between the Animatronics’ metal and the children’s souls. He’s told to be after immortality. 

Then we get Fazbear Frights, FNAF’s Goosebumps, an anthology of short horror stories set in the FNAF universe. In this universe, we get more and more stories about the nature of souls, and remnant, and we get mad scientists who are looking after them. 

We are introduced to Phineas Taggart, a scientist who is studying the secret of human emotions and how they are the key to understanding supernatural events. In the books he creates a robotic creature, the Stitchwraith, using the leftovers of haunted animatronics and dolls from Fazbear Entertainment. 

I believe he was created exactly to reflect on both William and Henry and to show us how the FNAF universe works. It’s no coincidence that the Stitchwraith looks so much like Ennard, and Eleanor, another of this series' original characters, looks so much like Baby. Cursed robotic beings created by humans messing around with supernatural energy. This is what this franchise is all about. 

Then in the games, we get Pizzeria Simulator, and we are briefly presented with the concept of Remnant again, as well as animatronics present looking for the spirits of children. Baby even remarks she will do what she was created to do. Afton created her to collect remnant, to catch children’s souls and fuse them to the machines. 

And Afton is right there with the Animatronic creatures, now reduced to his Springtrap, or better, Scraptrap persona. There’s a reason why his catchphrase became “I always come back” because that’s his true motivation. He was a sociopath who did horrific experiments on children, all trying to find the secrets of immortality. 

And no. Contrary to popular belief, he did not start killing after losing his son or seeing the animatronics come to life. I believe that he always knew about remnant and that every time that he killed or kidnapped someone, was with the sole goal of trying to understand how he could make his mind and soul endure after death. 

Heck, I bet even creating Freddy's was part of his plan.

The Fazbear restaurants were always his way to lure and experiment on children from the very beginning.

Why do you think that of all people to be the main murderer, Scott chose the co-founder of the restaurants? 

Because Freddie’s, as well as Circus Baby Pizza World, were always meant as nothing more than killing grounds, places where Afton could lure and capture children to experiment on them. 

That’s why no matter what happens, Fazbear Entertainment will always try to cover up the crimes. Not just because they are greedy, but because for years William was in charge and the whole thing was created just to kill children and steal their souls. They always knew. 

And when Henry realized what he was being accomplice to, it was too late. William ran away, eventually becoming Springtrap, and what was left of his experiments was sold by what was left of his company as children’s entertainment. 

And pieces of his experiments with the souls of murdered children continue infecting the equipment that Fazbear Entertainment uses, creating more murderous animatronics, and more monstrous copies of his soul.

And by this point in the series, I don’t think even fire is enough to destroy what Afton created. He will always come back as more and more fucked up creatures while the spirits of the dead children will never get released. 

That’s the tragedy of FNAF

TOKYO GHOUL in DBD concepts:

So I did one of these for the upcoming FNAF chapter, however there’s a huge rumour/leak that Tokyo Ghoul is the March License, which is interesting to me because I’m a HUGE Tokyo Ghoul fan. Like the only mangas/anime’s that I’ve ever liked and considered myself a fan of was Tokyo Ghoul and all the Junji Ito stuff. I’ve seen some people argue Tokyo Ghoul doesn’t belong but considering we had Dungeons and Dragons, Lara Croft and Castlevania… anyway…

The Killer - The Ghoul

So the leaker who’s claiming the chapter will be Tokyo Ghoul, also implied the killer will be Kaneki. I saw some people, mostly TG fans, saying this doesn’t work because Kaneki is the protagonist. I’d argue against this though. Like yeah he’s the “good guy” but he did still murder plenty of people and was a bad guy for a good while. He’s not innocent but he’s also not an evil monster, which I agree with BUT a lot of the DBD killers also aren’t evil monsters. Like Spirit was a completely normal girl until she was killed, same with Artist. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kaneki’s lore was that he was taken by the Entity straight after killing Jason, since he just went crazy and an omnipresent Entity grabbing him and telling him he could eat whoever he wanted would probably work on him honestly. Even if he didn’t want to murder people, it’s not like he could really defy the Entity anyways. My actual “concept” for him would be that his ability is related to his Kagune or his tendrils. Perhaps as his weapon. Maybe he could leap or move quickly like Wesker or the Demogorgon. Idk, I’m not good at gameplay mechanics I’m more of a lore guy.

Rize Kamishiro - Legendary Skin

So the fun thing about Tokyo Ghoul, and it being a killer-only chapter is that most of Tokyo Ghoul’s biggest characters are… Ghouls… This obviously means that most if not all of them would fit as potential killers in the game. Now it’s not a guarantee that Kaneki will even get skins if he’s added, but I’ve noticed a recent trend with the new licenses getting added. A lot of them are getting added with a LOT of stuff, like voice lines, tomes and loads of cosmetics. Old licenses hardly got anything and now we’re getting entire TOMES. What I’m trying to say is that if Tokyo Ghoul gets added, there’s a good chance it will come with voice lines and cosmetics. Not just cosmetics but LEGENDARY cosmetics. Especially to make up for the lack of a map of survivor. Now the good thing about Rize, is that she has the same Kagune as Kaneki because they were originally hers. This means you wouldn’t even need to change her weapon or powers, because it’s already hers. Obviously she’d need female animations over Kaneki’s male ones, but considering James is a legendary for Cheryl and he got changed animations, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Touka Kirishima - Visceral Skin

What MIGHT be an issue would be adding characters like Touka. As cool as Touka would be to add, her kagune is completely different to Kaneki’s. Hers looks more like butterfly wings than anything, and don’t function the same as tendrils. Now this doesn’t mean she can’t be a skin, however she’s need a whole different set of animations. Making her a new character would be useless but making her a visceral skin… We haven’t had a single visceral skin since Naughty Bear, but using all the changes that NB has from Trapper, it’s clear that Touka could work. Her animations would need to be overhauled so that her kagune could function still as a weapon, but not the tendril-type Kaneki has. This would also mean a new mori, unique to Touka.

As much as I’d love to add Eto as well, she’s kinda… unique. Her kagune is so different to the other ghouls that not only would it be a bitch to animate, but it wouldn’t work functionally because her anatomy is completely different.

We already know there’s no survivor or map coming. I also unfortunately can’t think of many survivor skins to add, legendary or otherwise. Probably because the humans are so basic and wouldn’t fit a survivor.

Hey Guys, It’s Any! Today I wanted to talk about my wasted potential. If you know me which you probably don’t since this happens to be my first official blog I love writing. I’m also pretty interested in the “Five Nights At Freddy’s” lore so quite naturally I found myself trying to rewrite the Fnaf storyline to be more enjoyable for me and others alike! I got insanely bad writers block around five sentences in but rereading it a month later I really badly want to continue writing because having my own fnaf au is a dream come true for me. could you imagine that? being able to tweak and rewrite a story you love to mold it into something even more personal, sentimental, and likeable. I will confess I need to research a bit more into Fnaf’s lore because I personally grew up learning it so some of my knowledge may be a bit outdated or even incorrect. I know some fans get rowdy about that kind of thing but honestly I don’t really care unless you’re making a informal statement because the entire game series and lore is so fucking inconsistent that it doesn’t matter if someone’s fan fiction doesn’t add up because it probably still makes more sense than the official lore. My au takes place in a time like our own where Fnaf is just a game series and maybe even a scary story that parents tell their children to deter them from running off with some predator for a handful of skittles. My protagonist (unnamed) is one day out thrifting for some furniture and such for her new apartment. She comes across a metal office desk that looks a bit worn down but it was only twenty five bucks! She purchases it after awhile of pacing around the store checking if there were anything else. to be truthful she didn’t want the damn thing but she couldn’t find anything better and she was an artist who desperately needed a desk for cheap. It wasn’t getting better than this. With no help whatsoever she got it up the stairs of her apartment and began to clean it off. the cloths she used were stained a dark black color by the time she finished wiping it down and the desk itself appeared to be a sparkling silvery metal color which was a huge difference from the dusty grey desk she had brought home. In the drawers she found a stack of blank sheets of paper, a box of ballpoint pens and a tape. Okay that’s all I had to blog today guys I hope you enjoyed!! Ride the Cyclone Kids Playing FNaF: Help Wanted

bit of an odd topic for headcanons, i know, but after i finished writing today’s fic, instead of, you know, working on those prompts people sent me, i decided to pick up my brother’s VR headset and play some Help Wanted. and while shitting my pants over a video game about robot animals, i thought to myself: how would the Cyclone kids do playing this game?

and so, this post was born.

i don’t care what ANYONE says, Help Wanted is the scariest game in the WHOLE FNaF franchise. you won’t understand until you actually play it with a VR headset. any other version of the game and watching a let’s play just doesn’t hit the same. those animatronics are GIANT.

also this is a slight homage to my FNaF days on this blog, which i will probably return to eventually, just not anytime soon!

without further ado, let’s see how these choir kids hold up ;)

The VR headset belongs to Ricky, but they’re playing at Mischa’s house because there’s more room in his basement

And god knows they’ll need a lot of room

The game is projected onto the TV for everyone else to see

Ocean is literally shitting herself right off the bat, she is SO SCARED

The VR headset already intimidates her, and she doesn’t like that she isn’t able to see what’s going on around her outside of it

(She’s also afraid that she looks stupid with it on)

(She does, but everyone looks stupid wearing a VR headset)

The MOMENT the game loads, and she’s in that title screen area where Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica are looking down at the player, she INSTANTLY SCREAMS

Because again

THEY’RE HUGE

You can’t really tell if you’re watching a video of the game or if you’re playing the non-VR version of it, but those guys are TOWERING OVER YOU

And Ocean is already really short, so like

She’s at an ant’s POV

She turns around, sees Foxy, and screams again

Also you can hear footsteps in the title screen, and when she hears them, she yells, “HELLO?!?!”

The others are cackling because she’s already terrified, and she hasn’t even started the actual game yet

And then she finally DOES start, and her terror turns into something far beyond human levels of fear

Girl is scared for her LIFE

She plays the FNaF 1 mini games because Ricky said those would be the easiest for her

She begs to differ

When Phone Guy calls, she picks up the phone and holds it to her ear like it’s real

She keeps responding to what Phone Guy is saying like they’re having an actual conversation

She does good for about one (1) minute, and then everything goes downhill

She looks to the left, and Bonnie is standing there in the doorway, and poor girl lets out the most genuine, EAR-PIERCING SCREAM

She can’t even close the door because she fell to the ground and attempted to scuttle away 😭

It doesn’t work because, well, the headset is still on

She insists that she can keep playing, and she’s fine, though

Even though she’s trembling so bad you can see her character’s hands shaking in the game 😭

She manages to beat night one, and she gets the Toy Bonnie plush as a prize. She proceeds to hold the virtual stuffed animal to her chest while sobbing

One time Noel poked her from behind to try and get a little spook out of her. It did more than spook her. She thought her life was about to END. Her heart literally STOPPED BEATING.

To sum it up, THIS is basically how she is while playing. Screaming. Constantly.

Noel is also scared, but he’s acting like he isn’t to one-up Ocean, who’s still traumatized from her turn

In the first game mode, Mischa convinces him to look out of the office and into the hallway

For all my FNaF fans out there, y’all know what’s up

It’s the oldest trick in the book

Foxy comes sprinting down the hall at him, and his life flashes before his eyes

He decides to stop playing for a minute and take a moment to contain himself

When he’s ready to try again, he decides to play the FNaF 4 mini game first

He won’t stop commenting about how weird-looking the room is

Every time an animatronic appears on the bed, he stares at it for a second, and then finally reacts by screaming

“So I’m listening for foot…AAAAHEGA”

He just starts making an assortment of incomprehensible noises as he gets scared

“CLOSE TH— CLOSE THE DOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHHGGGG”

Mischa is the reason why wrist straps exist on controllers

He would have thrown the controllers as a defense mechanism the first time he’s jumpscared

He’s having so much fun, though

Whenever he gets scared, he starts shouting and cussing in Ukrainian

Tries to square up with the animatronics Several Times

Whenever he gets jumpscared, he just starts SWINGING

Ricky knows the ins and outs of this game, so he’s mainly just watching his friends get scared

He still plays, though!

My man is a GOD at it, compared to the others

Penny is out here having the time of her life

THIS IS SO FUN

She gets scared, yes, but she always ends up laughing after she screams

In the room where you select the game you want to play, she gets DOWN ON THE GROUND and starts making her character eat the candy off the floor, all while making chewing noises and talking about how good it tastes

And the others are just watching her do this from the couch 😭

She also keeps throwing shit at Glitchtrap because she thinks it’s funny

Anything that she can grab in the games, she’s throwing

Every single time she beats a game, she eats the prize she gets

Mischa, while Penny’s playing the vent repair with Ennard: Ricky says you can eat the gears

Penny: OH HELL YEAH

And then she eats the gears

Constance is terrified, but GOD, she’s having so much fun

She’s not quite on the level of fear Ocean was at, but she won’t try to act brave

This game is scary!

She decides to try to repair Bonnie, and the MOMENT the game mode loads in, her heart drops into her stomach

Because this dude is MASSIVE

She starts talking to the game to try and quell her fear

The Horror Genius of Five Nights At Freddy’s

I’ve been playing FNAF: Help Wanted VR on my Oculus Quest lately (a birthday present to myself -- I know I’m late to that party!) and it’s reignited in me my old love of this series. I know Scott Cawthon’s politics aren’t great, but I don’t think there’s any malice in his heart beyond usual Christian conservative nonsense -- and I think he stepped down as graciously and magnanimously as possible when confronted about it. Time will judge Scott Cawthon’s politics, and that’s not what I’m here to talk about. I want to talk about what makes these games so damn special, from a horror, design, and marketing perspective. I think there’s really SO MUCH to be learned from studying these games and the wider influence they’ve had as intellectual property. 

What Is FNAF? 

In case you’ve somehow been living under a rock for the last seven years, Five Nights At Freddy’s (hereafter, FNAF) is a horror franchise spanning 17 games (10 main games + some spinoffs and troll games, we’ll get to that), 27 books, a movie deal, and a couple live-action attractions. 

But before it exploded into that kind of tremendous IP, it started out as a single indie pont-and-click game created entirely by one dude, Scott Cawthon. Cawthon had developed other games in the past without much fame or success, including some Christian children’s entertainment. He was working as a cashier at Dollar General and making games in his spare time -- and most of those games got panned. 

So he tried making something different. 

After being criticized that the characters in one of his children’s games looked like soulless, creepy animatronics, Cawthon had his lightbulb moment and created a horror game centered on....creepy animatronics! 

The rest, as they say, is history. 

The Genius of FNAF’s Horror Elements

In the first FNAF game, you play as a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a sort of ersatz Chuck-E-Cheese establishment. The animatronics are on free-roaming mode at night, but you don’t want to let them find you in your security room so you have to watch them move through the building on security camera monitors. If they get too close, you can slam your security room doors closed. But be careful, because this restaurant operates on a shoestring budget, and the power will go off if you keep the doors closed too long or flicker the lights too often. And once the lights go out, you’re helpless against the animatronics in the dark. 

Guiding you through your gameplay is a fellow employee, Phone Guy, who calls you each night with some helpful advice. Phone Guy is voiced by Cawthon himself, and listening to his tapes gives you some hints of the game’s underlying story as well as telling you how to play. A few newspaper clippings and other bits of scrap material help to fill in more details of the story. 

Over the next set of games, the story would be further developed, with each new game introducing new mechanics and variations on the theme -- in one, you don a mask to slip past the notice of animatronics; in another, you have to play sound cues to lure an animatronic away from you. By the fourth game, the setup was changed completely, now featuring a child with a flashlight hiding from the monsters outside his door -- nightmarish versions of the beloved child-friendly mascots. The mechanics change just enough between variations to keep things fresh while maintaining a consistent brand. 

There are so many things these games do well from a storytelling and horror perspective: 

Jump Scares: It’s easy to shrug these games off for relying heavily on jump scares, and they absolutely do have a lot of them. But they’re used strategically. In most games, the jump scares are a punishment (a controlled shock, if you will) -- if you play the game perfectly, you’ll never be jump-scared. This is an important design choice that a lot of other horror games don’t follow. 

Atmospheric Dread: These games absolutely deliver horror and tension through every element of design -- some more than others, admittedly. But a combination of sound cues, the overall texture and aesthetic of the world, the “things move when you’re not looking at them” mechanic, all of it works together to create a feeling of unease and paranoia. 

Paranoia: As in most survival horror games, you’re at a disadvantage. You can’t move or defend yourself, really -- all you can do is watch. And so watch you do. Except it’s a false sense of security, because flicking lights and checking cameras uses up precious resources, putting you at greater risk. So you have to balance your compulsive need to check, double-check, and make sure...with methodical resource conservation. The best way to survive these games is to remain calm and focused. It’s a brilliant design choice. 

Visceral Horror: The monster design of the animatronics is absolutely delightful, and there’s a whole range of them to choose from. The sheer size and weight of the creatures, the way they move and position themselves, their grunginess, the deadness of their eyes, the quantity and prominence of their teeth. They are simultaneously adorable and horrifying. 

Implicit Horror: One of the greatest strengths to FNAF as a franchise is that it never wears its story on its sleeve. Instead of outright telling you what’s going on, the story is delivered in bits and pieces that you have to put together yourself -- creating a puzzle for an engaged player to think about and theorize over and consider long after the game is done. But more than that, the nature of the horror itself is such that it becomes increasingly upsetting the more you think on it. The implications of what’s going on in the game world -- that there are decaying bodies tucked away inside mascots that continue to perform for children, that a man dressed in a costume is luring kids away into a private room to kill them, and so forth -- are the epitome of fridge horror. 

The FNAF lore does admittedly start to become fairly ridiculous and convoluted as the franchise wears on. But even ret-conned material manages to be pretty interesting in its own right (and there is nothing in the world keeping you from playing the first four games, or even the first six, and pretending none of the rest exist). 

Another thing I really appreciate about the FNAF franchise is that it’s quite funny, in a way that complements and underscores the horror rather than detracting from it. It’s something a lot of other properties utterly fail to do. 

The Genius of Scott Cawthon’s Marketing 

OK, so FNAF utilizes a multi-prong attack for creating horror and implements it well -- big deal. Why did it explode into a massive IP sensation when other indie horror games that are just as well-made barely made a blip on the radar? 

Well! That’s where the real genius comes in. This game was built and marketed in a way to maximize its franchisability. 

First, the story utilizes instantly identifiable, simple but effective character designs, and then generates more and more instantly identifiable unique characters with each iteration. Having a wealth of characters and clever, unique designs basically paves the way for merchandise and fan-works. (That they’re anthropomorphic animal designs also probably helped -- because that taps into the furry fandom as well without completely alienating non-furries). 

Speaking of fan-work, Scott Cawthon has always been very supportive of fandom, only taking action when people would try to profit off knock-off games and that sort of thing -- basically bad-faith copies. But as far as I know he’s always been super chill with fan-created content, even going so far as to engage directly with the fandom. Which brings me to....

These games were practically designed for streaming, and he took care to deliver them into the hands of influential streamers. Because the games are heavy on jump-scares and scale in difficulty (even including extra-challenging modes after the core game is beaten) they are extremely fun to watch people play. They’re short enough to be easily finished over the duration of a long stream, and they’re episodic -- lending themselves perfectly to a YouTube Lets Play format. One Night = One Video, and now the streamer has weeks of content from your game (but viewers can jump in at any time without really missing much). 

The games are kid-friendly but also genuinely frightening. Because the most disturbing parts of the game’s lore are hinted at rather than made explicit, younger players can easily engage with the game on a more basic surface level, and others can go as deep into the lore as they feel comfortable. There is no blood and gore and violence or even any explicitly stated death in the main game; all of the murder and death is portrayed obliquely by way of 8-bit mini games and tangential references. Making this game terrifying but accessible to youngsters, and then marketing it directly to younger viewers through popular streamers (and later, merchandising deals) is genius -- because it creates a very broad potential audience, and kids tend to spend 100% of their money (birthdays, allowances, etc.) and are most likely to tell their friends about this super scary game, etc. etc.

By creating a puzzle box of lore, and then interacting directly with the fandom -- dropping hints, trolling, essentially creating an ARG of his own lore through his website, in-game easter eggs, and tie-in materials -- Cawthon created a mystery for fandom to solve. And fans LOVE endlessly speculating over convoluted theories. 

Cawthon released these games FAST. He dropped FNAF 2 within months of the first game’s release, and kept up a pace of 1-2 games a year ever since. This steady output ensured the games never dropped out of public consciousness -- and introducing new puzzle pieces for the lore-hungry fans to pore over helped keep the discussion going. 

I think MatPat and The Game Theorists owe a tremendous amount of their own huge success to this game. I think Markiplier does, too, and other big streamers and YouTubers. It’s been fascinating watching the symbiotic relationship between these games and the people who make content about these games. Obviously that’s true for a lot of fandom -- but FNAF feels so special because it really did start so small. It’s a true rags-to-riches sleeper hit and luck absolutely played a role in its growth, but skill is a big part too. 

Take-Aways For Creatives 

I want to be very clear here: I do not think that every piece of media needs to be “IP,” franchisable, an extended universe, or a multimedia sensation. I think there is plenty to be said for creating art of all types, and sometimes that means a standalone story with a small audience. 

But if you do want a chance at real break-out, run-away success and forging a media empire of your own, I think there are some take-aways to be learned from the success of FNAF: 

Persistence. Scott Cawthon studied animation and game-design in the 1990s and released his first game in 2002. He released a bunch of stuff afterward. None of it stuck. It took 12 years to hit on the winning formula, and then another several years of incredibly hard work to push out more titles and stoke the fires before it really became a sensation. Wherever you’re at on your creative journey, don’t give up. You never know when your next thing will be The Thing that breaks you out. 

If you want to sell a lot of something, you have to make it widely appealing to a bunch of people. This means keeping your concept simple to understand (”security guard wards off creepy killer animatronics at a pizza parlor”) and appealing to as wide a segment of the market as you can (ie, a horror story that appeals to both kids and adults). The more hyper-specific your audience, the harder it’s gonna be to find them and the fewer copies of your thing you’ll be selling. 

Know your shit and put your best work out there. I think there’s an impulse to feel like “well, nobody reads this anyway, so why does it matter if it’s no good” (I certainly have fallen into that on multiple occasions) but that’s the wrong way to think about it. You never know when and where your break will come. Put your best work out there and keep on polishing your craft with better and better stuff because eventually one of those things you chuck out there is going to be The Thing. 

Figure out where your target audience hangs out, and who influences them, and then get your thing in the hands of those influencers. Streaming and YouTube were the secret to FNAF’s success. Maybe yours will be BookTube, or Instagram, or a secret cabal of free librarians. I don’t know. But you should try your best to figure out who would like the thing that you’re making, and then figure out how to reach those people, and put all of your energy into that instead of shotgun-blasting your marketing all willy nilly. 

You don’t have to put the whole story on the page. Audiences love puzzles. Fans love mysteries. You can actually leave a lot more unanswered than you think. There’s some value in keeping secrets and leaving things for others to fill in. Remember -- your art is only partly yours. The sandbox belongs to others to play in, too, and you have to let them do that. 

If in doubt, appealing to furries never hurts. 

Do I take all of this advice myself? Not by a long shot. But it’s definitely a lot to think about.

Update

I know I haven’t updated in forever, aside news/memes. I hope you guys don’t mind. I’m working on a few personal projects (2 original games, an RPG and a VN) and doing some spring cleaning of other collection (selling stuff--not FNAF).

I haven’t ordered the Fredbear/Bonnie Hex Plushes yet, but I am going to! Just needed a bit longer to save since delays really messed up my schedule. I’ve got two Aerith figures on preorder (FFVIIR), I have to pay in advance for Tatsuya (Persona 2) because Goodsmile sucks donkey butt and made him exclusive, and there are several games I’m trying to get before their sequels make prices increase... and they’re already expensive.

I played a lot of Final Fantasy X (one of my fav games) and got burned out, so I’ve been playing Legend of Mana Remastered. Another one of my favorite titles. I’ve got some personal family stuff going on (my mother needs surgery and another distant relative passed away) and it was really hectic; not to mention the increasing horrible state of the world.

One reason I haven’t been very active for FNAF, I feel, is that news is so slow. Security Breach just left everyone with questions and I was hoping it was more of a soft reboot than anything... I’m very disheartened on the series. The only continuing discussions I see are fans claiming to have completely, factually solved the bigger mysteries (MM, the Shadows, who was killed first, ect.) and it’s very bland and it feels the fandom has moved from theories to claiming opinions. I just need a break from it all. I still love William and Henry as much as ever, but my inspiration is low. I think I’ve said that before, but...

I will continue to post art (when I get back to them), FNAF news for the film and merchandise relating to the two (if you were wondering why I haven’t shown off, say, the original set of hex plushes or the funko plush or the Youtooz).

I don’t know what else to say except thanks for supporting this blog. I plan to be more active again depending how the Fazbear Frights series goes. I don’t know how much it will relate to the topic at hand, but it is fun to draw parallels even if they are biased ones and I think you guys enjoyed reading them. Just know they are for fun and mostly not meant to be taken seriously. If only June/July would get here! (Also, expect a huge delay on the books... I have to order them so I don’t get them until a week after release... then takes a day to read one... and leaks usually happen a MONTH in advance so I avoid them)

For the past few days due to this drama I’ve been in tears, my depression has been dogshit and I’ve had thoughts of self harm. FNAF is a comfort franchise for me and something I hold dear to my heart, but all of this controversy especially here on tumblr is breaking my heart. The worst part is that I don’t hate nor love Scott anymore, I’m indifferent about the whole situation. I can’t handle negativity about something that I love. I’ve had to deal with negativity in my own home for years and years and I’ve tried so hard to ignore it. I’m not deleting my account, I’m just going to be taking a huge break in case I regret deleting everything I’ve built up on this account. I can’t take it anymore. I’m sick of being in tears everytime I come on here. I also feel deeply hurt by everything that’s happened and I’m deeply conflicted too, but even that will get me hate. I try to see the good in everyone even when they do something atrocious in terms of politics. I can’t change the past, nor can I change people’s minds and I don’t plan to. I’m just terrified of expressing myself anymore, it feels like Deviantart all over again and I’m tired of it. Yes, I was deeply hurt to learn the information as a POC, left wing, asexual, autistic girl but I’m even more hurt that us fans don’t feel safe expressing ourselves through FNAF anymore. I love fnaf regardless of the creator, it has helped me through so much in my life. But now everytime I think about it, I cry. I just want to let my followers know that the reason I’m not posting anymore is because of my mental health. I’m sorry for everything, I’m sorry about all of this. I wish everyone well and that maybe with time I can heal from this, I can find some closure. I don't know, but that's not the point. I'm trying to stay focused. Now, I'm a huge Fnaf fan. It's one of my all time favorite video games, and my favorite Fnaf character is Funtime Foxy. (We're like the same person/animatronic.) Anyways, the voice actor for FF, Mr. Hippo, and Rockstar Foxy, (All three are up there on favorite characters list actually), is Joe Gaudet. He's a super awesome dude, but he recently posted on the Fnaf subreddit that his brother is fighting a deadly brain cancer.
