So I said I was going to explain so hear me out. I was looking at this twitter thread and realized something, guys, this is a queer ending.

Do you all remember Korrasami? This is that ending! Korrasami wasn't explicitly canon til the end, and even then, that scene had to still be confirmed romantic afterward. Yes, looking lovingly at another while entering another realm is romantic, but it's not a kiss, it's not a confession, and while so many saw it without confirmation, it could so easily be shoved aside as platonic.

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how this seemingly generic ending made Bones handle the anime adaptation differently. We can think about alternative endings, about phrasing but maybe it just has to do with that final scene. Horikoshi didn't need to have Katsuki reaching out his hand the parell at the end was towards Izuku receiving his power. Didn't need to emphasize Katsuki's involvement with the project, but he did. He did all this. And Bones knew they couldn't shy away from what even the Japanese fanbase has deemed a marriage proposal. They knew they had to emphasize Katsuki's importance, and haven't you noticed how much more they have done so. Korrasami's cannon moments aren't filled with blushes but the closeness of their relationship. Queer ships, especially before them, had their moments in the in-between in looking at the analysis we make. Call it cope, call it whatever, but I refuse to believe these moments don't mean something. He could have so easily ended the series with All Might giving him the suit. Katsuki didn't have to reach out in the end. If he wanted an opening ending he could have had the whole of 1A there reaching out for him or even just skip to the ending scene with everyone. He could have had Ochako, but no, he emphasized Katsuki. You realize that if Ochako had reached out and told him to go with her, there would be no denying the implication there. There are a couple of things I wished from the ending, but we ultimately won. If Korrasami was never confirmed that ending scene would still be pretty romantic. If all a ship needs to be canon and make sense within the story is the author's approval, I think that ship is at least heavily implied.

So I know we talk about how disappointing the treatment Chi-Chi got in the series was… but can I say another that gets me every time? VIDEL.

I mean she was this cool girl who would fight crime and who wasn’t enamored by the mystery of The Great Saiyaman, she wanted him unmasked while also handling this new kid who was super suspicious to her. She loved martial arts, and she was clearly proud to be a fighter. Heck, she was even the first (normal) human girl to learn to fly! She had so much potential, and then she… ends up relegated to the back more than Chi-Chi herself, and she’s barely even involved with the Great Saiyaman stuff. She just has Pan and is Gohan’s wife.

What I reeeeeally wished they’d done? I wished they’d gone for an inverse of Goku and Chi-Chi. Videl’s love of fighting translates into her taking over the World Champion title from her dad, while Gohan is more down to earth and invests his time in his scholarly pursuits. Both support each other, while also actively pursuing their passions.

Just sucks that Videl, cool and extremely badass Videl, didn’t really get to shine when the show continued past the Buu Saga.

I guess the tldrs are supposed to go at the top so I'll put it before the essay ksljldkja

TLDR I feel like there are some pretty legitimate narrative reasons you could point out for her story choices, but due to the repetitive nature of the issue I can't even pretend it's not primarily just casual misogyny. That said, I do love that she and Gohan are both teachers, and I would love to see in future stories that she and Gohan still train together and watch her hold her own, even if it's against someone closer to early-series villain power levels.

and now here's the longer version:

I'm of two minds about Videl -- while I do hate the casual misogyny of Toriyama's 90s writing re: Badass Girl Meets Boy & Settles Down, I do feel like he tried to make up for it in Super's manga bringing in more female fighters and clarifying that 18 still kicks ass, and I love that Videl teaches martial arts now. She's not around much in the manga (but neither is Gohan), I'm grateful for what little we got to learn about her in DBS: Super Hero, and I do not think they did her as dirty as they did Chi-Chi, because they straight up vilify her at every turn for No Reason -- but I definitely agree that she got benched and it sucks.

I am not quiet about how much I dislike pretty much everyone's characterization in DBS' anime, but they really seemed to tone her down a lot, as if BotG was the only resource they had (even though tbh that whole movie she's at a party trying not to reveal to anyone that she's pregnant and it makes sense that she's quiet and trying to stay out of the fight imho). Her joining in on the Saiyaman schtick was never a thing in the manga/Toriyamaverse, and it does make sense to me that she wouldn't pursue fighting in the way her father does -- both because she doesn't want to embarrass him and she also does not seem to like the attention or celebrity culture at all, even in the original series.

It never bothered me that she didn't go after the world champion title. Videl never seemed to want the title as much as she wanted to test her grit against other professional martial artists without her dad being able to intervene. She always felt to me like the titles and trophies were meaningless and embarrassing, because she sees how her dad operates. After a certain point, it's just politics and theater, and she just isn't about that life. I think part of the reason she's into Gohan is because he's earthy and grounded and doesn't have any of the flash and glamour and posturing she's used to seeing tough guys flaunt. He's just pure strength, heart body and soul, and so is she.

I genuinely and truly love that both she and Gohan both became teachers, and that Gohan's interests veered more quiet academic and hers stayed where her heart is in martial arts. And while I'm VERY glad she's never had to train with Roshi, it does bum me out a lot that she probably has kept up her training with Gohan and we never get to see it. 1) That's adorable ship content and 2) She's one of the very few human fighters who started learning about ki control, and I think it sucks that everyone else got to keep training and getting stronger and she didn't (onscreen, at least).

That said, I do think that it's fair she doesn't fight along the Z-Fighters, like I've heard a lot of critiques say she should -- she's only been doing ki training with Gohan between his studies and her pregnancy for maybe three years by the time we get to Super. She is human, and the other human fighters who'd been at Roshi Bootcamp for multiple years couldn't hold a candle to Raditz. In terms of power, she'd be a massive liability, just due to the fact that she's still relatively new to this. Hercule is a wildly powerful human man who beats the fuck out of two armed mercenaries on screen with Zero problems, but he's an absolute joke compared to the Z-fighters.

Unfortunately, even though Videl is much stronger than her father, there's still an insanely wide gap between her and the weakest among the Z-Fighters. And unlike them, she's not a scrappy rogue. She's not in a position to drop off the face of the earth for months or years to focus solely on martial arts the way they are.

So while for Videl, specifically, I can easily make a case for why she wouldn't be involved, I do think it's less a character choice and more a symptom of the larger problem of benching female fighters. Because all of this being true, we COULD still see her doing vigilanteism like she was doing before, even if she's not tracking police scanners anymore. It would be nice to see her stopping a crime just because she happens to be in the right place at the right time, just to show us as the audience that yes ma'am she can and will still beat your ass in public if you act up.

Beerus happens to be one of my favorite Dragonball characters and I fully ignore ANY of the dumb decisions the Super Anime made with his character at times.

New headcannon

(no idea whatsoever of whether this has been done or not, let me know)

I present to you VEGETARIAN RANG

We've seen him eating meat on the show, and he is a fox so it kinda doesn't make sense, BUT HEAR ME OUT.

Yeon abandons Rang on the mountain and Shin Joo leaves too, to search for Yeon. Our poor little fox is all alone, with no one to take care of him. He is a kid, who is dependent on others; his brother and his brother's friend. Now that they are gone he has no one to turn to for help. But, we've seen how close to nature Rang was. We've seen his love for his dog and all living creatures (no humans included, of course). Also, we must remember that nature doesn't forget, she avenges herself when it's needed and takes care of those who treat her with respect.

The animals of the mountain remembered how Rang treated them, how he protected them and played with them as a child. That's why, when Yeon is gone, all of them start to protect him back. They sleep around him, to keep him warm, when it is too cold outside. They show him what herbs and fruits he can eat so he doesn't starve to death.

They become even more protective of him after the fire that took his precious dog away from them. Rang helped them get away from the flames and they want to pay him back in some way. Wherever Rang goes, they follow. They play with him and console him whenever he is sad.

Rang grows up eating all kinds of fruits, herbs, flowers and vegetables. Gone are the days when he used to eat meat too. He hasn't learnt to eat it, but also, he can't bring himself to even consider ever eating it. He would feel like a cannibal, of he ever ate any kind of meat again. All these different animals raised him, they may have been different from the ones that are usually on most families table, but they are still animals. They are his family; they cared for him when no one else would, they protected him, they fed him and played with him.

So no, Rang doesn't eat meat. He grows up to be vegetarian and respectful of every animal he meets. They are all his family, after all
