NND Week 2024 - Ruby Kept Floating Array

Hey peeps!

Sorry about the radio silence on the NND front. Ngl, I’ve been really struggling when it comes to drawing literally anything recently, and that unfortunately bled over into Nuts & Dolts Week despite my best efforts

I was really only able to complete this piece for the week, since the sketch for it stuck with me and was simple enough to complete. However, I’m adding the concept sketches I made because idk I liked ‘em for the most part - I just ran out of time to do them

I have no idea how to fix this rut I’m in, but I’ll figure it out :)

Also, with this idea in mind, just how much of Tyrian's "Cackling madman" persona is legit, and how much is just him committing to the bit?

I'm genuinely upset by how little we had of Aaravos saying "Previously on The Dragon Prince"

Like seriously, he's the main antagonist AND has the best voice, and he only said it like 3 times- 😭

OH so Team Zym and Viren get to say it more than 6-7 times EACH but Aaravos gets 3-4!?

Yes I get that he's a “mystery” and hardly ever shows up in the second saga before season 7 but wHaT!?!?

I'm thinking about it again! Fic research, rewatching S4 of RttE. Got to Midnight Scrum. And Krogan's a bad dude, he's framed as a bad dude. But I still have sympathy for him.

He doesn't make sense being in that episode. I look at it like this. Yes, he was in there so we can see what he's capable of for when he makes more of an appearance in the 5th season. S3 was the sprinkling of signs of the RttE greenlight getting more seasons after S4.

His first appearance however, was Last Auction Standing. He was the "important guest" who would bestow a significant profit for the Grimborns. Further strengthening their reputation as dragon traders.

They were relying on his wealth, Drago's money. And Krogan, had gone under those orders to procure dragons for his army. They were establishing that by this point.

In coming back to Midnight Scrum, I think of the moment Krogan forces Hiccup in front of Ryker.

"Your eyes look familiar masked man. Do I know you?"

Now this begs the question: Why doesn't he want them knowing he's the same man from the auction? This same important guest?

Best answer my mind conjures, the bounty wasn't an order from his superior. The reward would have only been for his benefit.

Okay, look here. This is how Team STRQ dressed in the past, when they were teenagers.

Now, look here. this is how Team STRQ is dressed when they first appear in the series proper.

Nothing's changed much, has it?

Now, later on, after getting a severe wake-up call in V6, Qrow changes his outfit.

And, when we meet Summer Rose and learn more about her, she's dressed like this:

Is there some kind of correlation between character development and wardrobe?

Things that are wasted potential in RWBY? (Plus, let's talk about Sienna)

So, wasted potential...

I know that many hate the term, hate the concept. But precisely I want the people that hate the concept to tell me, what you consider wasted potential.

I'm not going to define what is wasted potential because I think that everyone knows what it is. Basically a missed opportunity. Something that could be great but end up being little used or not used to its maximum.

Sienna Khan is a clear example. Let's take this as an opportunity to take a look on her. 1.-Her importance and apparitions.

"Then, five years ago, our leader stepped down, and a new one took his place. A new leader, with a new way of thinking. Suddenly, our peaceful protests were being replaced with organized attacks. We were setting fire to shops that refused to serve us, hijacking cargo from companies that used Faunus labor. And the worst part was, it was working. We were being treated like equals. But not out of respect... out of fear."

In Black and White Blake makes the first mention of Sienna. Doesn't call her by the name, but we know who she is talking about. We then know that she is the one responsible for the radicalization of the White fang. And that she managed that the faunus were treated as equals. Out of fear, but anyway, it's a feat.

"And Hazel, I'm sending you to the leader of the White Fang. Adam Taurus has arranged the meeting. The boy continues to prove loyal. Ensure that Sienna Khan feels the same."

Salem wanted an alliance with Sienna Khan showing that Sienna is important for the White fang and the fulfillment of the operation. Adam only controls (Supposedly) the branch of Vale after all.

I could copy paste the conversation of Adam and Sienna but that it's too long so better not.

The point is that it is there where Sienna first appears and later dies. Adam shows the great support he possesses from the White fang and kills Sienna. Though there is something interesting:

"Give our former leader a proper burial. All who were here tonight will claim that Sienna was murdered by a human Huntsman. Sienna Khan will become a martyr for our cause, her final act as High Leader."

Adam doesn't want it to seem as he killed her. It shows that despite Adam's popularity, Sienna still have some of support from her followers.

"It's true that I do not fully condone many of her methods. What I do condone is what Sienna fights for: the idea that the Faunus and humans are, and should be, equal."

Ghira respects Sienna and condemns the murder of her. It is something important since Ghira doesn't agree with her methods. She was so honorable that he end up respecting her. Later we see her in the Adam's character short.

There she encourages Adam and support him. She takes the lead of the White fang and we see her fight in the front lines. She is a badass fighting and have a cool weapon.

2.-The opinions of the fandom.

The fandom have very different opinions about her. For example, some see her as the one responsible for the radicalization of Adam and ultimately the responsible for building up what end up becoming a full fledged terrorist organization. Some even criticize her for trying to put a stop to Adam's goals, saying that since she started it she should continue till the end.

Others see her as honorable. She was badass leader that fought for equality and died at the hands of a radical. Even some don't see her as a villain, considering that her violent methods her successful and could have achieved really the equality. In the situation where the faunus were, only violence could achieve their rights.

3.-Why she is wasted potential?

It's simple. She is important in RWBY universe but during the series, she was underused. She end up just being an element for Adam's character and also a plot device. She radicalizes Adam, she built the empire for Adam to claim it, she dies at Adam's hands. Even her death is also to show how evil Adam is.

She was important as the old leader of the White fang and yet, Adam was the face of the White fang. During the first volumes our heroes fought the White fang of Adam, during volume 4 the White fang agents are following Adam's orders, and during volume 5 he becomes High leader. What's more, the White fang members use the mask and that's something he started. Even Sienna's guards used the mask even before the coup.

4.-Is she what the fans wanted on Adam?

Yes and no. For one side, yes, the fans wanted an anti hero. Someone who really cares about the faunus but have moral limits and at the end of the day, is someone respectable. Type, Magneto.

For other side, Sienna was barely used. There is a reason why Adam have more fans than Sienna, and is that Sienna barely appears.

Other thing, the fans like the idea of Adam allying with Cinder and company, Sienna doesn't like to follow that route.

5.-Other uses for the character?

I was thinking about this.

For example, we could have saw her leading the White fang during volume 4. Or having mentions of the characters about her earlier. For example, during volume 2 Blake could say something like "I can't believe Sienna Khan is allowing all this to happen" and things of the such. We could saw an epic confrontation between her and Adam. For example, imagine if she was able to react to Adam's attack and dodge it and that generated the start of a battle. Adam would want to fight her alone so he would say to his followers to not intervene.

Or even better, not kill her. Imagine if during the coup some of her followers entered in the throne room to save her. We could have a White fang civil war. She could be the one to lead the new faunus movement instead of Ghira. After all, many in the fandom support her ideas instead the ones of Ghira.

6.-Conclusions

The thing is. While many don't like it, I consider that the wasted potential is a useful concept to define a lot of concepts, characters and ideas in the fiction, in this case, in RWBY.

So, for the people that don't like the "Wasted potential" term, what do you consider that was wasted potential?

I prefer to use the term missed opportunity personally.
