"[Owen] Davis’s play was well-received, running at Broadway’s Ambassador Theater (now home of Chicago) for 112 performances over three months in 1926, then spent eight months on the road. To put that Broadway run in perspective: There were 262 productions on Broadway that season. Ticket prices for the play ranged from one dollar all the way up to $3.20."
The Great Gatsby: The 1926 Broadway Script
Since the publication of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel of the Jazz Age – on April 10, 1925, 99 years ago today —  “The Great Gatsby” has been turned into an opera, a ballet,  several movies, and a musical that will open on Broadway later this month, with a completely different musical adaptation of the novel also aiming for Broadway. Stop yearning so desperately for the next best thing that you forget to appreciate the present. Sitting in a brand new BMW wishing it was a Bentley, chasing some elusive end point, and losing the magic of today. You do not have to keep pursuing, acquiring, moving. There can be satisfaction in contentment. There can be satisfaction in the now.

Arts Gatsby and the reason their interpretation of Gatsby as non-white and his father as explicitly Indigenous American is important and so embedded in the text, as taken from my dissertation <3

and this (which I specifically more about minority vs social mobility but stills stands as relevant to the conversation)

Don’t mind me I’m just thinking abt the scripture verse on Gatsby’s grave that Nick chose for him in the 1949 movie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like the fact that out of everything he could’ve had on his grave THATS what Nick chose and it so symbolic of the how Jay lived his life. He was so set on chasing Daisy and the American Dream that he rationalized his unhealthy desire for her and it and completely reshaped his life for that. That was his chosen path and Nick choosing that verse shows how aware he was of Jay’s choices regardless of how much he disapproved of it. And also how those choices led him to his untimely death and not to what he was seeking.

ROUND 2; classic lit adaptation bracket
Tumblr media Tumblr media
GATSBY GAME:
based on: the great gatsby, f scott fitzgerald
medium: video game
propaganda: you play as nick and you throw your hat at enemies and collect margaritas for points. there is a level that takes place on a train. it slays tbh.
DUODECIMAL:
based on: twelfth night, william shakespeare
medium: short story
propaganda: 'It’s so fucking good! It has symbolism! It delves deep into the Malvolio Plot—which is often brushed aside due to its messiness, but Goosebooks dives fully into that messiness and emerges from the other side with a heartbreaking, hopeful, and humorous story about mental illness, neurodivergence, and gender. It has OCD neurodivergent queer Malvolio what more do you WANT from me guys. Go read Duodecimal I am sending you psychic waves to go read Duodecimal.'

the urge to learn filmography and raise a budget and get a proper team of writers just to do your favorite piece(s) of literature famous
It CANNOT be that hard to adapt a piece of media. Really, it can't. It's my number one question when reading comics or books - how the hell can someone mess this up? I can understand tweaking minor things in the context of the story, eg: setting or time or whatever (again, as long as it doesn't affect the story). BUT SIBLINGS?! As so many users have written on here already, it is just a disgrace to Oscar Wilde and so many other authors when their piece of media is put to shame in such a way. SIBLINGS?!?!?!?!!? This not only disregards the content, but the context! I am hoping so hard that this is like some massive prank and Netflix is doing this to get people to rage-watch the show, and then it turns out theyre not siblings and actually gay. I am hoping so damn hard that that's the truth. Anyways, I want to prove that its not that hard to make an adaptation of a piece of media, so artist, animators, and more of tumblr, UNITE! Feel free to reblog this post with comics or animations or anything that can count as a plausible adaptation, or with examples of good adaptations of a piece of media! Also feel free to add tags of other pieces of media that you feel were treated unfairly.

gatsby bway has a Lot. of characteristic flaws
but i Will give them that i like how they start/end with roaring on, and have the transition of nick's enamoration with the life of the party to his distaste once he's seen what's behind it and everyone else just has. no development. theyre as ugly as they ever were in their choices but nick has learned better
