This was not a simple altruism or generosity on my part.  It would look foolish any other way.  She hit the screen like a bomb. ~ Gregory Peck

[Kat] placed the salad on the table before she reached for [Brom's] arm. “Hello, husband.” Before Brom could do anything, she pressed a kiss to his lips, and he fought the urge to jump back—or gag.
“Hello… Sweethear-r-r-rt…” he tried, unable to make the word sound natural on his lips, much as he knew he needed to play a role.
Matty, please forgive me.
Kat had already rounded the table to take her place across from him, and her displeasure bore into him, eyes ablaze. What’s wrong with you?! she mouthed.
Brom simply shrugged in response—though in truth it was more of a shudder—before he flashed Elizabeth a genuine smile.
He just needed to get through dinner, and then….
Well, he didn’t know what, exactly, but at least he wouldn’t be here.

Kitty’s fingers spasmed around Mary. The older of the two found the bitterness she tried so terribly to fight back turn to rage in her heart. Her younger two sisters could be wild, could be far too friendly, but in a small village such as theirs it was not nearly as damaging. And despite what Lizzy seemed to think, they were good girls. They spoke easily with men and women alike, and Lydia could sometimes lean too far into flirtations, but she never wandered around without Kitty, and they never left each other alone. But it was clear her sister had never noticed.

🎵 + spooky?
me being unfunny: here's my spooky playlist!
send me 🎵 and a feeling/mood and I’ll make you a lil playlist
(actual answer under the cut 😂 ft. incoherent babbling about all the songs)
so I don't really have spooky music (like Halloween vibes kind of "spooky") but it made me think "ghosts" so this is my version of spooky 😅
GIVE UP THE GHOST by Rosi Golan & Johnny McDaid / I love this song so much, it was the first one I thought of when you said spooky <3
IVY by Taylor Swift / "Haunted" (later on the list) was the first Taylor Swift song I thought of because it's called "Haunted," but to me "Ivy" fits better in some ways. I think it's the imagery of "faith-forgotten land." "loml" was also a possibility because "dancing phantoms on the terrace."
DANCING WITH YOUR GHOST by Sasha Alex Sloan / I know it's another obvious one because of the use of "ghosts," but I think the sound of the song matches the lyrics and makes it feel a little spooky.
SUN-BLEACHED FLIES by Ethel Cain / Content-wise I know this has nothing to do with the prompt, but based on vibes/sound it felt like it fit.
WARM WHISPERS by Missy Higgins / This is not spooky at all, but it still came to mind for me! I remember feeling like this song surrounds you, which I think is what stuck with me about this prompt—it went spooky -> haunting.
ROCK YOUR SOUL by Elisa / The prompt keeps making me think of haunting and echoes, and the end of the song has that characteristic to me — the part that starts "together with the sun, we shine all the way." The way it builds.
HURRICANE by Fleurie / the picture I get in my mind (maybe from the music video) is a dark, sort of haunted house. I think of creaking and that ghostly element before the song builds (my favorite part is when it breaks, this song so beautifully mirrors the lyrics in how it builds)
THE HILL by Cristin Milioti / I think it's the minor key elements of this song that makes it feel sort of haunted/spooky. I love Cristin Milioti so much and I love this musical and the song and the lyrics and agh.
HAUNTED by Taylor Swift / it felt like cheating to put this but also like a crime not to put this... so here we are.

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. [insp]
