The poisoned Skittle problem, from the perspective of a non poison Skittle
The metaphor of the bowl of Skittles, some percentage of which are poison, and how many of those Skittles you want to eat, has been used by feminists about men, and republicans about immigrants. I'm increasingly devoid of shits to give about what kind of vile things I'm going to be called, so what the heck, I'll use it too for this.
With class and housing in the US, there is a poisoned Skittle problem; the lower income you go, the higher the percentage of assaults George type people are in the mix. (Please note now that I am Not claiming that the elite are not prone to being assaults Georg, or that there's no assaults Georg in higher income brackets) For added fun, the poorer you are, the more you have to be in physical proximity to others who live in your area, while walking to the store or taking public transportation, increasing your vulnerability to being assaulted, etc. In the suburbs, a lot of the time, the guy who lives three houses down from yours and you have literally never seen each other, so it doesn't matter if he would immediately grab your crotch if he was in crotch-grabbing range, because the two of you have never been that close together. If you live in a more dense environment and travel by foot, your chances of being in crotch-grabbing range are much higher, so a crotch-grabber, etc. in your area is a more concerning problem for you.
Most people very reasonably prefer to live somewhere further away from assaults Georg. The thing is, other people also prefer to live further for assaults Georg, and if you were just living next to assaults Georg, you are a Skittle of indeterminate poison. So when a nice redlined Blue suburb with a great school district is considering if they're going to permit some affordable housing, they are going to look at the income bracket that will be living there and say, "There's too high a percentage of poison Skittles in that income bracket. We don't want to live in a community with assaults Georg, or invite assaults Georg Jr into our nice school, so we don't want affordable housing here."
So now you, as an innocent non poison Skittle are left trying to figure out how you are going to communicate your non poison status so you can get the heck away from the poison Skittles. The current way this information is conveyed is by convincing a higher paid job to hire you, making more money, and buying your way into a better neighborhood. This is a rather lossy way to sort, and shit like constantly disrupted sleep at the weekly hotel from all the shitty people who live there with you doesn't help with better job thing. There's plenty of non poisoned Skittles in that bowl, but how to extract them safely?
The obvious next question is why we as a society don't seem to have any solution to the problem of getting assaulted by assaults Georg other than to individually just try to scramble away from where such folks are statistically and to price the entire category of people who are statistically more likely to be assaults Georg out of certain areas. And now it's a criminal justice system problem and I'll leave that for another day, but overall, the criminal justice system seems a lot more interested in hassling people based on statistical similarities to assaults Georg than doing fuck all about stopping assaults Georg.

While we should 100% be subsidizing housing in dc for congressmen as part of a general package to radically increase their compensation levels, we should also be doing it because we could build one gigantic apartment complex with 535 units and have every member living under the same roof.
Because the HOA for that building sounds delightful. It should be filmed.

the more we see of harrenhal the funnier it is to me that house strong has produced three of the most normal and reasonable characters on this show, and the fourth is weird in ways that seemingly have nothing to do with having been raised in a haunted castle

Ime, the stairwells of those places spontaneously generate feces and that's the least objectionable thing you'll find in there.
Only good thing about that construction style is that at least it stops bullets. The bad part is that fact will probably be relevant to anyone who lives there.

Al coming back from his travels: Xing was great! I've learned so much about alkahestry, and I think we're really making progress and getting Jerso and Zampano's bodies back! It was really nice to see Mei, and Ling is doing a great job as emperor, and I even got to visit some of Xing's neighbors to the east! I feel like I'm learning more about alchemy and alkahestry every day

Homeless Care Package
Some things I'll be buying to make a care package for my local homeless person:
Socks, t- shirt, maybe underwear if it's not too weird, he probably needs it though
Dried foods; jerky, granola bars and dried fruit etc
Tasty sweet treat like a chocolate bar
Instant coffee
Thermos bottle
2 hot water bottles
Multivitamins
Bottled waters
Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
Bar of soap
Nail clipper
Small first aid kit
Gift card to a grocery store
Rain poncho
Sunscreen
Thermal blanket
Personal note letting him know that his situation is not his fault because the government and society is supposed to take care of people, but they don't because of greed and short sightedness
Feel free to take inspiration and make a care package for a homeless person in your city/town. You don't have to show your face, you can wear a face mask and sunglasses, and go with a friend if you're nervous.
It's a small gesture that can go a long way in giving a person hope. Even just cash or a grocery store gift card is a good thing to give. Life is unpredictable. It can take a turn for the worse and suddenly become very hard for anyone
We were never meant to go it alone.

Yesterday, I was talking with an old coworker, a guy who has worked hard his entire life, a guy at an age to be looking at retirement, a man who I know exactly how little money he makes and what a shithole he and his sick wife have to live in.
He and his wife have tried to get government assistance, but the social workers very explicitly don’t have anything for a White native born elderly couple. Or rather, there’s waiting lists longer than she is probably going to survive, but functionally that’s nothing. Meanwhile, refugees and people who aren’t White get ushered to the front of the line. It’s not subtle, it’s not secret, and it’s a very intentional thumb on the scale at the bottom of the labor market to subsidize the housing, healthcare, and food for different races/immigration status people differently. It’s a thing that nobody is supposed to talk about, very much so, and I fully expect to get pushback and denials and accusations from saying this, but every White person who has needed to seek government assistance I have ever encountered is quietly aware of this. Every social worker is aware of this (and frequently intentionally engages in this).
One team wants no welfare. The other team wants functionally no welfare for Whites. You can see how a lower class native born White American might see both sides as pretty similar.
Dems hand out jobs based on bloodlines too, and neither party’s favored bloodlines include me, so again, no difference from my perspective. The Dems seem functional to you? Really?
On some level, who gives a shit what kind of offensive nonsense a politician spews? Again, both sides’ politicians have very explicitly said they dislike certain groups. Trump is honest enough to say things like “shithole” and we pretend that “garbage” and “deplorable” are perfectly fine and polite terms. Does the name-calling actually do anything? Does it help me pay rent? If no, I have rent to pay, who cares what the news cycle is cycling today.
Chicken Little pearl clutching about how the Republicans said a naughty word is a big part of the Dem/left of center strategy these days, but as I already said, just claiming Trump is an existential threat and then trying to jam the nearest body that is owed a win down the voters throats doesn’t have a perfect record at this point.
I honestly think they didn’t want to win in 2020 and Biden was supposed to be a midterm throwaway candidate who was old enough and stupid enough to take the nomination itself as his victory lap because he wasn’t going to last to 2024 anyway.
Feeling generally demoralized and lowkey hopeless about the election; we’ve been doing this since 2016 and it’s starting to feel like Groundhog Day.
Donald Trump probably ran for president as a PR stunt. His whole thing feels like a joke that stopped being funny before the 2016 primaries were over.
The Democrats appear to have been phoning it in, flopping between halfhearted attempts to get the Obama energy back with a woman this time, and flinging whoever is closest at hand up and declaring that Trump is an existential threat so you gotta shut up and vote for whatever reheated leftovers they dragged out, and then the combination of both.
Both have coalitions of both perfectly cromulent normies and batfuck wannabe genocidaires who want to violently repress some portion of the population. Who knows how that’s gonna pan out; might be nothing, might be horrifying, I honestly don’t know if either coalition is more tilted towards horrifying in numbers or inclination.
Whether either ticket is capable of leading the world hegemon through a war or other major crisis is also unclear; Trump’s old and clearly not what he once was, and that’s assuming he was ever up to the task. He didn’t perform well during the Covid crisis imo, which leaves me doubtful that the Trump of 2025 will be able to navigate some new crisis well. Kamala is a social climber lawyer who has transparently gotten this far in large part because of her gender and ethnic heritage but at least she probably has a few good years left in her. Neither of them are stupid but neither of them really seem like the right person to lead the country through the crises that are inevitably coming up in the next four years.
The VPs both seem potentially more capable but also kinda wildcards, especially Vance who appears to have been revealed as a consummate suck-up, but his relationship with Thiel is promising to me rather than threatening and his mixed race marriage and children mean that he personally is bought in to a multiracial society. Walz seems fine and fairly competent, his background in education is nice. Neither are silver spoons, both have real life experience and some kind of military experience, which is good. I would actually be engaged and having to make a real decision if this was a legit Vance vs Walz race.
I don’t live in a swing state so my opinion is irrelevant though.

It always angers me when people say that men would not put in so much effort to enact their violence on women and children because they do exactly that.
I was only seven when I learnt about just how hard men try to deceive the world so they can have free reign over young girls. I went on a Brownie trip to an orphanage back when I lived in Nigeria. The orphanage was just for girls which isn't uncommon, and it was massive, with its own school, shops, clinic etc. The girls had no reason to leave. It was set up by a pastor- a Nigerian who'd moved back from abroad.
I remember while we were there, one of the girls had just had a baby. She had seemed so old to me but looking back, she must have been around sixteen or seventeen. I remember my mum seemed suspicious when we were told the girl had run away and returned pregnant. She seemed even more so when we met the owner.
A year or two later, there was news on the radio. The man who had set up the orphanage had raped and impregnated several girls, selling their babies to prospective parents. I didn't even understand what rape meant back then but I remember my mum being devastated. Looking back, I think she might have felt guilty, perhaps she'd seen the signs: the girls not being allowed to leave the compound; teenage girls ending up pregnant. It seemed so obvious.
But no one questioned a man who used all of his money to build and set up a home for vulnerable girls, he was a pastor, educated, well-travelled. He could never have done something so cruel. But he did.
When I was writing this post, I tried to find any articles but I couldn't. They were just so many identical cases, man sets up orphanage, rapes and abuses children in the orphanage. Different cases, different years, one as recent as 2023. What I learnt back then and know for sure is that men would do anything, no matter how difficult or expensive, anything to have access to people they can abuse.
