Hey maybe we can transform these empty buildings into something usable? Let the landlords foreclose on the properties, the cities repossess them, and now there’s suddenly a lot more housing and community spaces. Wouldn’t that be neat?
This is the thing that always makes me angry when people say there’s not enough housing available to combat the housing crisis. As if there aren’t hundreds of empty buildings or floors in all the downtown areas in the country. But god forbid we take those spaces from the gluttonous landlords who charge businesses ridiculous rents and would rather have the building stand empty for years than repurpose the space and/or offer reasonable rents.
There’s more than enough space. Just like there’s more than enough food, money, medicine, etc. The problem in this century has never been availability. It’s always been an issue of distribution. And for some reason we all grow up believing the wealthy deserve to get even wealthier while everyone else slowly starves to death in the streets.

There are now over 15 million empty homes in the US, and 650,000 homeless per the very bias official numbers, or 23 houses per person

The rest of the thread is somewhat uplifting as a sign of resilience in the most abject situation possible

All landlords, cops and billionaires must perpetuate evil in order to maintain their status as such in society, if they didn't help uphold the evils of this system, they won't remain any of these 3 for long

the liberal individualism of some "leftists" is off the charts. they'll really tell you that we should engage in individual acts of terrorism, like burning down houses, to get rid of landlords, instead of idk, actually building a movement to give workers control of society
the way to eliminate landlords is to eliminate the system of wage labour. landlords, like all the non productive elements of society, can only live off the surplus that's extracted from those who produce. with an economy that's owned by society as a whole and planned for the maximum public benefit, nobody's going to pay landlords to sit around owning stuff. the answer we're looking for is socialism, not terrorism

I’m gonna make this its own post bs it’s not nice to keep rambling a tangent on someone else’s post but like. It’s just fully blowing my mind that my shitty $480/month apt in Indianapolis in 2006 is going for like $1500 now.
I always trot that very low rent figure out as a “back in my day” anecdote (where I live now in Austin) bc a similar place would probably go for $2000 here in 2024. And it’s so cuckoo today to hear someone say “my half of the rent in my first apartment was $240.” Like is she 60? Nope she’s not even 40 yet! It’s gotten that bad that fast!!! Haha!
But I didn’t even know the half of it. I’d never done the work to know 1) what those very shitty apts rent for now (and they still exist?!) and 2) what the rent would have been in 2024 if it just kept pace with NORMAL INFLATION ($734) which is already bad in its self.
I mean come on! $1500 is what we’ve got vs $734 which is what one would expect if you could control for the ever escalating greed or corporate profits and the ultra wealthy making a literal killing off of the basic human right of shelter.
To say it’s enraging to think about is my understatement of the week.
