Picnic tomorrow - deets below!

Looking forward, our focus areas for 2025 seem to be:

1. Community Fridge Builds

2. Mid-South For Abolition Tabling

3. Mutual Aid Picnics

4. 901 Harm Reduction

1) Last year, we established a community fridge in Orange Mound, providing 24/7 access to free food, following the successful launch of our first fridge at the Memphis Church in Cordova in October 2023. We have plans in motion to expand to at least two more locations. We won’t stop until there’s a fridge on every street corner.

2) We’re also committed to educating our neighbors about abolition through collaboration with our sister organization, Mid-South For Abolition. We engage in purposeful conversations at our picnics and tabling events where we are grateful to have the privilege to be able to plant seeds.

3) To improve accessibility, we’ve adjusted our picnic schedule to the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of each month. Our picnics have become resource-rich events, distributing hygiene products, emergency contraception, and sleeping bags, reflecting the dire need for resources in our community. We continue our winter clothing drive, and we thank everyone for their support.

4) We welcome our new sister organization, @901HarmReduction, which is establishing Memphis's first official harm reduction group. This group addresses the disproportionate targeting of indigent communities by law enforcement, as well as the impact of mandatory sentencing laws and prosecutorial discretion that contribute to mass incarceration and the denial of dignity, respect, and autonomy for people who use drvgs.

🖤 Additionally, we place great emphasis on caring for one another, we aim to foster an environment where our band of misfits can feel some sense of solidarity and community in a industrial society that seeks to isolate us.

Despite the challenges posed by current political dynamics, we remain determined to living as if we are already free - want to see what that looks like?

Never Use Alone

We never know what each other are going through, but one thing is for certain - we are all struggling, in one way or another.

The suffering we each experience is what connects us the most.

Our society conditions us to isolate ourselves to the point where we don’t think anyone else could ever possibly understand the experiences we’ve had to endure. We are taught to believe that we must be some kind of moral failure for experiencing hardship in life. We end up internalizing fallacious and self-harming narratives such as “I must have been a bad person in a past life to deserve this.” But that’s just not reality. In truth, we are all struggling.

No one is certain why they are here, and anyone who tells you otherwise with confidence is not someone to be trusted because they are either lying to themselves or trying to sell you something; a product, an idea, or a lifestyle.

The truth is, our shared experiences of pain and resilience serve as a powerful reminder of our humanity. When we acknowledge our struggles, we create space for empathy and understanding, bridging the gaps that societal conditioning has built between us. It is in our vulnerability that we find a profound connection with others, allowing us to see that we are not alone in our suffering. This shared understanding can be a source of strength and solidarity, empowering us to lift one another up, rather than remain isolated in our pain.

Community care can take many different forms, but the number one takeaway from any and every single liberation movement on the planet should be: care for yourself so that you can care for others and check in often with those whom you love and care about in this life. Mutual aid emerges from this foundational principle, recognizing that we are stronger together. It emphasizes the importance of collective support and shared resources, fostering an environment where individuals can lean on one another in times of need.

In a world that promotes individualism and competition, mutual aid serves as a radical act of solidarity. It reminds us that we are interconnected and that our well-being is intrinsically tied to the well-being of those around us. When we engage in mutual aid, we break down the barriers of isolation and stigma, cultivating a sense of belonging and community. We learn to listen, to share, and to uplift one another, creating networks of support that can withstand the pressures of a challenging world.

Recognizing our shared suffering can inspire us to create communities that prioritize care, compassion, and connection. By leaning into our collective experiences, we can foster resilience not only within ourselves but also within our communities. It is through this dedication to mutual aid and community care that we can begin to heal the wounds of isolation and build a more just and equitable society for all.

A community member in Lepanto, Arkansas (50 minute drive from Memphis) has reached out to us wanting to host a community fridge/pantry. We will be helping with the build. We need a refrigerator. Anybody have a spare fridge they can donate? We can come to you and pick it up!

We will be out at our regular community picnic location, Court Square Park, from 1:30 pm till whenever the food runs out, usually about 2 hours.

We are accepting donations of winter clothing items throughout the winter - reach out for a porch drop off address or feel free to bring items to our next picnic.

We welcome folks to just feel free to show up to our picnics and feel free to bring along a friend/loved one!
