Hello my fine feathered (I am assuming possession of feathers if you are, indeed, capable of flight) @hogoflight! I'm always always happy to hear that people appreciate my frenzied rambling in the tags :D! I have a lot of articles and recommendations :D!! Ancient Greek notions of beauty and representations of it in their art and sculptures is a pretty well studied topic! There isn't any way for us now to know definitively what the beauty standard was (it varied widely from region to region and culture to culture after all) but here are a couple of my favourite reads about Aphrodite and what her representations tell us about idealised beauty!

Probably the most empirically extensive one I can list is Krönström's thesis which compares statues of Aphrodite and literary text referring to both the goddess and mortal women to determine physical ideals for women in five specific eras of Grecian antiquity. Including measurements of the statues there are many descriptions of Aphrodite as 'curvy' with a 'voluptuous figure' and with 'ample buttocks and bosom'.

"When the beauty traits are described in the texts, they are never extreme or anything that could not be found in normal people just that they are more beautiful in every aspect. Furthermore, the sculptures’ physical forms look healthy, they are tall and have distinct curves. Great examples of this are the Knida sculpture and de Milo (the Melian) sculpture."

Of course, these images are still idealised, and there was still a concept such as 'too fat' or 'too skinny' found in written records (and this thesis even includes analysis of pornographic writings and descriptions of the fashion and stylings of pubic hair of women from different regions!!) but from an interpretational standpoint? There is absolutely no reason why these can't refer to a fuller figure. Height was also a very important factor after all and over the course of many eras, it seems like being well proportioned in addition to the length and appearance of one's hair were the most important factors (and, like Apollo, greater beauty was given to those with curlier hair)

Mireille M. Lee's 'Other Ways of Seeing' essay which talks about the forgotten female viewers of Knidian Aphrodite which is also extremely illuminating on how Aphroditic sexuality and sensuality was perceived totally differently from the well documented male voyeuristic gaze (which was overly preoccupied with the statue's nakedness and therefore over-sensationalised the statue's physical appearance) vs women's perspective on the statue which is more centered on the beauty of simplicity in Aphrodite's garment and decoration and in her power and ability to captivate both in her finery and without it. I think it's especially useful in exploring the importance of finery, jewellry and adornment in representations of Aphroditic beauty.

"Some of the small-scale copies are heavily jeweled, especially those from the eastern Mediterranean, for example the Hellenistic gilded terracotta statuette in the Çanakkale Museum (Fig. 5) in which the goddess wears, in addition to the armband on her (right) arm, the following: a necklace with multiple pendants; cross-bands extending over both shoulders and hips, with a cascading pendant in the center; a coiled snake armband on the left arm and another snake on her left thigh, and a twisted anklet on her right leg. (The left leg has been restored, and might also have featured an anklet.)"

"Jewelry is especially associated with Aphrodite in Greek literature. As seen above, in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, the goddess adorns herself with gold jewelry, dress-pins, and earrings in the shape of flowers (162–3)..."

Finally, and to me, the most important one in the argument for an interpretation of Hyacinthus as fat, beautiful and fundamentally Aphroditic comes from Brilmayer's brilliant brilliant thesis done on Aphrodite's work and influence in Archaic Greek Poetry which does away with all of that masculine preoccupation with physical proportion, measurement and bodily ideals for a focus on a Sapphic Aphroditic ideal centered in clothing, ornamentation and, most importantly cunning as symbols of Aphrodite and ultimately a feminine idealised form of beauty. This paper also discusses Pandora and Helen in these terms and it is just kind of a wonderful read tbh.

"Combining Homeric and Hesiodic elements with her own ideas, she [Sappho] alters the way female beauty is viewed. For example, the Homeric war chariot – a symbol of male, military prowess - comes to symbolise the totality of Aphrodite’s power uniting in itself male and female qualities. Having addressed the concept of beauty directly, Sappho then concludes that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. With the help of Helen of Troy and her beloved Anaktoria, Sappho sets out to reinvent the concept of female beauty as a godlike, subjective quality that may be expressed in many ways, yet remains inspired by Aphrodite."

The conclusion to all of this of course is that Aphroditic ideal beauty is much more fluid compared to its stricter Apolline masculine standard. The nuances and understandings of both are of course, constantly being studied, analysed and scrutinised but really, if Dionysus who was both bearded and clean shorn, effeminate, birthed and rebirthed (and twice gestated!) and strongly associated with vegetation can be popularly portrayed as fat and handsome, why can't Hyacinthus?!

Damn, getting copies of legal certificates is fucking expensive.

#since my mom has gotten married then divorced then married again since she was enrolled #she needs to provide the tribe with BOTH of her marriage certificates to show a clear path of her name changes #and it cost $41 to order a copy of her previous marriage certificate. $41!!!#god damn #my enrollment form is more or less in limbo rn because i can't submit it until she gets her info changed #and after she gets it changed she'll still need to fill out a record release form for me #also the website we used for ordering her certificate was fucking creepy #because the security questions at the end were extremely specific things like 'what work licenses have you held'#and 'what car have you recently owned' with multiple choices and a correct answer from the list

Sakura gets a second point for being the first to complete the tree climbing at being better at chakra control, but at the same time it just feels like she was made good at it so no extra training segment time would have to be put into her getting good at it and it can be all about Sauce and Nart. Idk that feels too pessimistic but also could totally be true.

so I had the summer (in reality, like… almost three months) off from one of my volunteering roles and I’m 20 minutes into my first meeting back and I am already so irritated and angry. maybe this is Not A Good Sign.

#people! are! just! so! useless!#and I am being uncharitable to some people but god #this meeting is also going to go on fucking forever bc nobody can stay on track #and like everyone is very nice! but sometimes I do not care about people being nice I care about getting shit done and not being in #a meeting til 8pm #like maybe I need to #just. dip.#I am full of frustration #I managed to get my point said about us needing more people there to Get Shit Done in between everyone being very optimistic #and like they agree with me #but god #I thought I would have more patience after a few months off and. nope. less patience #it’s just herding cats on intense steroids #and not doing it for a couple months has uh. brought into sharp relief how dysfunctional and infuriating a system it is #one of the people I work with just talks all fluff #like a consultant who charges by the word is what my partner said #and it’s all like things we should do or things we should focus on and empty buzzwords #‘we need to ensure these people have a seat at the table’ ‘we need to expand our offering’ ‘we need a concrete x policy in place’#‘we need to provide a space for the most marginalised in our community’ ‘#like great ok but what are we doing and crucially who is doing it and how #bc you’re not doing it you’ve just said you’re at low capacity #and we are at best a team of five and currently a team of three if we’re optimistic #the buzzword bingo REALLY pisses me off idk if it’s the lesbian in me or the scientist in me or just the tired grumpy old man in me #I think I’ve complained enough #I may…….. have to reconsider what I’m doing here I don’t think getting this angry within a few minutes of a meeting is healthy #it’s a good org I think we do important work #buuut at what point is that not a good enough reason to stick around yknow #ok if you’ve read this far thank you for reading all my anger

once again i am being subjected to "educational courses on generative AI" (lengthy advertisements that the higher ups want us to watch so they can say that we are trained in AI)

HELLO???? YES??? i need 2 get back into painting fish

#said in the ‘gary i need’ voice #or painting in general . i want 2 get into plein air #and go to like . arizona or smth and paint the landforms . soo red and orange and rocky and dusty and ❤️🫶#the round brushstrokes on tht 1 would be so much fun~_~#its such a tiresome medium though.like all the set up and cleanup and stuff #i refuse to learn abt oil precautions so i just stick to acrylic but even then it dries so fast and its like.mindgame trying to decide what #to focus on in the little time u have . and god forbid u paint on a layer too soon and u lift it off the canvas #HELLLLLLL. but the end result is always so worth it . like holding a physical piece.its 3d .its REALL #fish r so much fun to paint bc 1 u get to pay attn to their morphology but 2 they jave the best textures #im not averse to painting fur but i lovee . the interplay btwn light and fish skin. its so epic and awesome #the only other artist ik of in my family is my uncle & he METALWORKS!!! FISH !!! #starlight personal #the good news is that I finally have another ketamine appt scheduled and it’s sooner than I thought they’d have an opening #the bad news is that the appointment is not tomorrow and we’re kinda at the end of my mental-emotional rope #now kids this is what we call: an inherent flaw in my treatment plan that cannot be removed #because pretty much in an ideal world I’d have ketamine appointments every 6 weeks but 1) expensive and probs can’t afford that #2) they don’t have enough availability for that to be realistic 3) can’t take off of work THAT frequently without consequences #4) I would probably start to doubt reality if I was tripping that frequently 5) I don’t think docs would allow it #treatment resistant depression and anxiety my beloathed if we could just chill that’d be great #treatment resistant PMDD my other beloathed someday I will do my damnedest to cut you out of my body #idk not to be too selfpitying on main but god it fucking sucks that I appear to be doomed to another cycle based mood thing #PMDD means I get two good weeks two bad weeks #ketamine being the only effective treatment for whatever my brain’s got going on means two good months followed by x bad months #until my next appointment #which like! two good months is better than no good months I am grateful that something helps #I just wish it was a more convenient help and it could be applied more consistently than my psych office provides #also wish I didn’t have to call them 3 times to get it scheduled but it is what it is #also also wish that I had fewer of the physical side effects of my anxiety and wouldn’t wake up puking the min things are rough #this is all to say: I want silly SW headcanons and droid headcanons and silly fic ideas and not Everyone is Always Suffering #but I’m also too lazy (I.e brain cannot make decisions rn) to search for new tags that may give me more silly #which means time to browse my bookmarks for good good comfort fics I have saved I suppose #(this is lowkey why i want to physically fight everyone i know who’s like ‘yeah meds would help but idk :/‘ like!!!!!!!!#bro it’s a privilege to have access to meds and it’s a privilege to have a body that doesn’t turn on you the min you take one!!!!#just try 10mg of zoloft I would kill for 10mg of zoloft to not make me entirely incapable of functioning!!!)#I don’t mean that - you have a right to take or not take medication and everyone’s reasons may be their own #I just had my body and have some rough feelings around treating my issues being so expensive and inconvenient #and then feeling guilty b/c I know I’m lucky that I can afford it and can take off of work for it when I need to #like I am pretty lucky to have something that works and to have a care team that helped me get here #so I don’t wanna be ungrateful or unappreciative of my own luck in this and the work that went into getting here #I’d just also like it if I could change the circumstances slightly #make treatment on the weekends an option - get my psych office to have more than 2 trip sitters so scheduling isn’t so bad

If I were in charge, first order of business is to taxe the super rich for a universal basic income.

Next, we're tying politicians wages to the average income of their riding. You can't represent people if you think yourself above people.

With that, we tie minimum wage to inflation and use it as a baseline to cap rent, utilities, insurances. Create a public record so nobody can rip you off.

End price gouging entirely. Enforce the retail/wholesale markup and investigate companies with suspicious profits. Tax businesses higher based on the CEO/Baseline staff pay gap - less than 30% are eligible for government grants, everything above gets taxed heavier with the highest gap.

No more super rich. Nobody needs that much money. Those people need to start investing in their companies and their people instead of making millions a day on the back of their workers.

Housing programs. Land allotments. You turn 25 years old, congratulations, here's a house and a plot of land. Do with it as you may, but you may not be allotted another plot for another 25 years if you squander it. Why's that?

You turn 50? Welcome to your retirement package? You want travel? You want crafts? You want a cottage in the woods? Ask and you get; you served your time, we've got you. Rest, enjoy the rest of your life. Spend your years doing what brings you peace. As long as you're not hurting anyone who doesn't want to be hurt, you good, boo.

so apparently I'm being asked to "choose a gender" for the property paperwork for my house because "non binary isn't an option" and I'm developing an eye twitch. do these people know they make laws for a reason
