SGISD PhD Student Explores LGBTQ+ Student Inclusion and Support in Two Recent Publications
LGBTQ+ students, particularly LGBTQ+ students who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color, often face unique challenges at school, including hostility, bullying, and safety concerns. Innovative school and campus support structures are critical for LGBTQ+ students’ safety and educational engagement.
SGISD PhD candidate Matthew McClellan recently published two works exploring LGBTQ+ student experiences with inclusion and support in K–12 and college education settings.
Matthew’s book chapter, Reimagining LGBTQ Student Inclusion and Support in Schools, examines collaborative support structures for K–12 LGBTQ+ students in schools. His chapter discusses how integrated support programs in schools can help empower and educate teachers and staff to provide more adequate and culturally competent support and resources to students, address school inequalities, and help establish more inclusive and supportive education environments.
Matthew also conducted a qualitative study with 14 LGBTQ+ college students to learn about their experiences attending college at a conservative university. His article, LGBTQ College Students’ Lived Experiences and Perceptions of Support on a Conservative Campus proposes strategies for increasing LGBTQ+ representation, facilitating campus education, and creating inclusive policies at the university level.
Matthew’s research interests include queer studies, immigrant and refugee rights, nonprofit leadership, social and cultural issues, equity, and inclusion. In 2020, Matthew also published a book review in the International Journal of Community Well-Being, which reviews the book “Development and Connection in the Time of COVID-19” by Cornelia C. Walther. has anybody else thought about how jk could easily manage sofia's parts of slow dance or is it just me?
Tumblr media
#jikook#bts#everybody is working to insert jk in who where i just don't see it (other than the seven parallels)#and not talking much about what i see as WAY more obvious nods most especially in rebirth#like jm sings about wanting to be worthy of someone - maybe someone who just became a huge SOLO global popstar?#and mentions 'real love' - what was the name of that chapter in the bangtan book again?#and the feminine pronouns not present it's just the nebulous 'you' that in jimin songs often stands in for 'army'#(and one very specific 'fan' who has said he is ALSO army)#it's the 'i wanna be with you'#the answer for jk's 'i am still' with its unspoken additional 'still with you' layer#and then we get slow dance and we're back to the nebulous 'you' - on an island he-#oh wait what was that about a pair that traveled to an island? and filmed some stuff there that we'll see soon? hm#the reason this set me off though is the lines about 'cancelling my plans' to live to 'the tempo of our favorite song'#the falling deep into lines etc etc#because we know what happens when those two get together - they lose track of time everything else fades away#it's why they haven't done lives. why 'you and me' are 'up all night' why jm knows that as soon as jk is around#his self-discipline will crack and he'll fall into the pattern he tried to head off by separating from jk while making face#and we *know* jimin wrote on this song#frankly if he *hadn't* gotten a female feature everybody would be JUMPING on this song as a jikook anthem#the inclusion of sofia works perfectly - like hammering the pin back in a grenade#but i was reading those lines and thinking how high she went and going who else could sing this ...?#huh. who do we know of who can sing *anything*? and who has a range that can hit and blend with jimin's perfectly?#so. i dunno. y'all do your delulu the way that works for you and i will do my delulu my way lol#personally i think the eyes in the mv look like a screenshot from the love wins all mv but that's only me#i think the parallels with seven work more#and speaking of parallels (there are so many) i think this album was built to ensure jm is on equal footing with a certain someone#it's the commerciality of it - as though jm was like we will be together in this as well#when he seems not to be super interested in global domination but still 'special' enough to be on the same level with his love

Twitter feels like an even split between pro-Palestine supporters and the most horrific kind of racists, Zionists and white supremacists. Tumblr is by comparison overwhelmingly in support of Palestine. And yet the level of dehumanization, isolation, Othering and casual racism on here is so much more unbearable and suffocating than Twitter could ever be.
Tumblr wants to be seen as the anti-racist good guys on the right side of history while reinforcing the racist white supremacist western-centric status quo. Black and brown people are given platform under strict conditions of what values can be challenged and how far white comfort can be pushed. It's on Twitter that we have our own communities, our own power of advocacy, and a collective drive to interrogate and dismantle structures of power.
It reinforces what I have known for a long time— Tumblr's hatred of Twitter and TikTok is based primarily on refusing to tolerate the reality of equal representation, leftist action and racial justice. A true diversity of power and perspectives is messy, chaotic, conflict-driven and upends the sense of stability and space that can only come with a homogeneity of racial demographic. The majority of disenfranchised people understands that power structures and bureaucracies are built on purpose to exclude them — the poor, the sex workers, the incarcerated, the ghettoised, the disabled, the colonized. We have to fight to be heard, and our reality and political investment cannot be separated from the minority trauma that informs them. True equality entails not having to funnel that trauma through behaviour and ethics that makes their expression more palatable or considering of others; it removes all respectability politics and allows us to behave with the same unpunished toxicity that is unleashed on us by white and western people. Conflict, cacophony and having to tolerate the untempered emotions and self-interest of all groups is the price of true diversity and honest dialogue. It also primarily empowers Black and brown people and disempowers whites. In contrast, the "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" on predominantly white-driven and Western-oriented spaces is a simply a neoliberal farce that requires us to perform our own humanity and ask validation from whiteness. This is why you see only the worst aspects and negative effects of Twitter and TikTok and use them to reject the the platforms wholesale while creating a narrative of moral superiority around Tumblr's relatively low levels of conflict and glossing over the receding presence of Black and brown people in its userbase.
Race is not a layer of oppression. It's the fundamental bisection that creates the underclass on which the colonial capitalist world order is built. It's the caste hierarchy of humanity; who gets to be labourer and profiteer, the exploiter and exploited, the worker and producer, the consumer and consumed, the masses and the individual. The living bodies and embodied lives. The experience of every other marginalization is shaped by its waters. White women and queers will neither understand nor share in the oppression of women and QPoC from both diasporas and the Global South. Even further, every marginalization becomes a weapon against BIPOC in the hands of its white demographic. Black and brown people of those marginalized communities will always only be a token and shield for their white counterparts, while being the workhorses behind their struggles.
It doesn't matter how many times you post "Free Palestine" when we know its only the product of your preoccupation with your own personal moral landscape. Politics based on egoism will always be eclipsed by threats to your material reality. This is why a userbase that spent its entire existence grandstanding against Nazis now cannot see Zionists as Nazis and begs people to participate in a political establishment that has revealed itself to be a genocidal white supremacist regime in the clearest possible terms. Fascism against its own enfranchised is the end stage of an empire that has begun to collapse under the weight of its war-mongering and now resorts to eating itself to survive. No amount of moral distance between yourselves and its machinery of death, no amount of scapegoating the lives crushed underneath it, will stop the roofs you sheltered under falling on top of you. This the truth that the colonized, enslaved and indentured people that built your house have lived all along.

Hannah Arendt’s political philosophy provides a rich framework to examine the interconnectivity and non-sustainability of colonialism, nationalism, imperialism, and capitalism. Through her analysis of power, totalitarianism, and the nature of human activities, Arendt offers critical insights into how these systems are intertwined and why they are ultimately unsustainable. well, i found something good about the slip arc. it’s the idea that homesickness in the future will be a physical illness that manifests in those especially who will never have the chance to return to earth. cause im gonna be real i wasnt paying attn because i didnt want to but the way i understand it people on new kinshasa weren’t affected by this, people in the upper echelons of sarasvahti (ie people who had money to spend and lives to lead by doing so) weren’t affected by it: only Brahma pests and those too poor for earth to ever be a dream in their hearts were ailing with a homesickness so potent and concrete that it led to physical symptoms.
and i fucking love that. i love that so much, i think theres this divide btwn ppl who would love to go to space and who love the idea of aliens and whatever and then you have those who get sick thinking about the idea that for years the planet has existed with a certain number of souls less than it’s supposed to have because theres always been people on the space station and i FIRMLY belong to that second category so like... this is SO good to me, it’s so fucking real
#penumb#again .... im gonna mention the sacred text this is getting embarrassing but idc its why i love that jet & rita are from earth in ambrosia#and i love the inclusion of second cit in there just on the basis of the fact that it melds so well and i love it#but also because i love how earth has grown and evolved and done so in a pretty insular way all things considered??#because its now considered backwards and old school and wht have you and obviously this isnt canon bc it wouldnt mesh with the homesickness#and also its not canon bc it just isnt but in ambrosia earth has sort of evolved beyond capitalism because theyve had to#bc they are living with the direct results of what human technologies have done in those ghost dinosaurs#and because at least how it comes across with the jet storyline it seems that earth has become a glorified parking lot#an in betweeny for dark matters to park their spaceship when looking for the unnatural disaster#i dont actually know if its canon that jet is from earth i feel like we've not heard jack about earth ever except for that illness#but like to me jet will always be from earth because it explains ... so much to me#this idea of natural disasters which im sure exist on other planets (i mean hello venus global warming) but they still all come back to#us and the way he's so self contained and self controlled seems to have something that for me resonates with earth too#idk. anyway idk if that author even knows what theyve done to my worldview with that fic its unreal

Weiss's alternate skin got posted and Im actually really fascinated by the fact that his hair is canonically lighter in Intergrade. Tho I guess it makes sense with a name like Weiss, it should be white and not gray. And while the added details make sense with the decade+ in improved graphics, its the different mako color that really fucks me up. They use a more teal color for mako in 7R rather than just neon blue??? I love how much more Im learning from this update!!!!

I feel bizarre making jokes about it myself, because it was basically the first horrible thing that happened in my life and I have extremely complicated feelings about it. BUT I'm grateful for everyone who does make jokes about it because it gives me perspective/keeps me from developing America brainrot
As someone around for 9-11 and the "NEVER FORGET NUMBER #1 GREATEST TRAGEDY EVER IN HISTURY" response to it I am in thrilled and invigorated by the fact that younger people just make amogus memes and TikTok nonsense about it. A huge chunk of America cared more about it than any entire genocide and thought you would cry learning about it. They hoped it'd make every generation patriotically angry forever and ever and want to join the military. Instead you Photoshop the towers into squidwards house and shit. Never stop lol

Case study: NDI for global event productions

Case study: NDI for global event productions
Tumblr media
In a recent Atomos and NDI case study, we learn how MMG Events harnessed NDI technology with a range of Atomos monitor-recorders to connect 26 countries for a global event. The team achieved seamless delivery through real-time communication and content sharing, effortlessly overcoming complex logistical challenges.
Tumblr media
MMG Events faced a challenge when they were tasked with the job of producing a four-day diversity and inclusion festival for the insurance industry. The event, spanning 26 countries and reaching over 60,000 participants, was built around NDI technology. But, MMG Events overcame the challenge exceeding all expectations.
“Ryan Majchrowski, CEO of MMG Events, faced an challenge: producing 150 hybrid and virtual sessions that spanned four days and ran around the clock,” said Atomos. “Each session needed to be live-streamed across six concurrent channels and made available on-demand within minutes. This involved coordinating AV teams across 26 countries, requiring extensive signal testing and onboarding to integrate hybrid and virtual elements seamlessly.”
“Live only happens once – redundancy is key. Guiding MMG Events’ approach to ensuring every layer of the production was secure, scalable, and adaptable to the demands of such a dynamic event.” Ryan Majchrowski
The Solution:
To tackle this event, MMG Events had a carefully crafted workflow including NDI technology and the Atomos Shogun & Ninjas.
“During the event, MMG deployed over 200 NDI signals across their network, providing exceptional flexibility and allowing signals to be redirected anywhere within the studio,” says Atomos. “Monitoring was centralized using NDI Studio Monitor, combined with Atomos Shogun screens to display extended desktops. BirdDog Flex with Atomos Ninjas were used as reference monitors, and proactive monitoring enabled the project manager to follow onboarding processes, watch streams go live, and address technical issues before they could disrupt the live event.”

UMass Boston INENAS Director Dr. Cedric Woods Speaks about Important Issues Impacting Indigenous Communities in Massachusetts
Have you thought about the origins of symbols like the Massachusetts state seal or flag? Have you considered the impact of and intention behind land acknowledgements? Are you aware of the negative impact of racist school mascots on Native students?
In this virtual discussion on WGBH Boston Public Radio, False Narratives: Understanding Contemporary Native Concerns, Including Harmful Images, and Why Change Matters, expert panelists share about false narratives, identity, symbols, anti-Native propaganda, and the impact of these issues on Indigenous and non-indigenous communities in Massachusetts.
Dr. Cedric Woods, Director of the Institute for New England Native American Studies (INENAS) at UMass Boston, joined Nichol Brewer-Lowry, MSc, Boston Site Director from Native American Lifelines and Melissa Ferretti, Chairwoman from Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe in this virtual discussion. Tara Mayes, Council Member of the Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band and GBH Associate Communications Director, facilitated this conversation.
Massachusetts must grapple with its history of violence against Native peoples and Indigenous communities. This history impacts people today in symbols like the Massachusetts state seal and flag as well as in racist mascots for various sports teams across the state.
As part of this discussion, Dr. Cedric Woods shared about the history and imagery in both versions of the Massachusetts state seal:
“Images are chosen to tell a particular story. And when we look at the first image [the old seal], what the alleged indigenous person is saying is ‘come over and help us.’ Embedded in that phrase is the use of the spreading of Christianity is a justification for colonization and conquest. And that’s really what this is about.”
Tumblr media
Two versions of the Massachusetts state seal. The version on the left is the current seal. The version on the right is the old state seal. This image comes from the GBH video episode, False Narratives: Understanding Contemporary Native Concerns, Including Harmful Images, and Why Change Matters.
These images perpetuate a false narrative that Native peoples needed help from the colonists, when in fact, as Cedric points out,
“These large robust native nations’ Indigenous peoples were thriving here before sustained contact, and it was indeed the English colonists who were in desperate need of assistance to be able to eat, to learn how to grow, plants, crops, and survive in a place that very much was foreign to them.”
The Massachusetts state seal has changed over time, but neither version was developed with input or feedback from Native people. Massachusetts is now in the process of changing the state seal and flag once again. Learn more about this process.
In addition to the state seal and flag, the panel discussed mascots, and how sports teams in Massachusetts portray Native peoples as caricatures to represent their teams.
Although it is certainly important to view these instances within a historical context and to see how these images and mascots have caused harm in the past, Cedric emphasizes how these mascots cause harm today, especially to students and young people who attend these schools.
“I think it is…critical to look at the harm that it causes to Native youth in K–12 educational settings… The research is clear and unequivocal that it helps to generate hostile climates for Native students: lower self-esteem, increased negative feelings, [and] an increased belief in negative stereotypes.”
There are two bills in Massachusetts—Senate Bill 245 and House Bill 477—about banning the use of these mascots in public schools. If you live in Massachusetts, you can reach out to your elected officials and urge them to co-sponsor and sign these bills.
What else can you do to take action and support Native people in Massachusetts? The panelists offer several suggestions:
Get to know local tribes and tribal members
Learn about the history and the current reality of being Indigenous in our society
Follow representatives from Native communities, tribes, and tribal serving organizations on social media
Join tribal events that are open to the public
Call and write to your state representatives about Senate Bill 245 and House Bill 477
Learn about the Land Back Movement led by Indigenous communities
Read books by Native authors about their experiences and experiences in their communities, such as The Mashpee Nine by Paula Peters; Firsting and Lasting: Writing Indians out of an Existence in New England by Jean M. O’Brien; and Historical Archeology and Indigenous Collaboration: Discovering Histories that Have Futures, coauthored by Dr. Rae Gould
Watch and listen to the full episode to learn more about homelessness, culturally relevant substance use programs, mental health, misrepresentation of Native peoples in K–12 education, and other important issues facing Massachusetts and Indigenous communities.

The Interconnected Roots of Philosophy: Reclaiming a Global Intellectual Tradition
Philosophy, at its best, is a collaborative and evolving enterprise. Yet, much of how philosophy has been taught and discussed in modern academia reflects a narrow and exclusionary narrative. The dominant story centers on Greece as the singular fountainhead of Western philosophy, conveniently ignoring the global and interconnected roots that shaped even the earliest Greek thinkers. This…

Not entirely sure how I'm expected to respond when I point out something is white as fuck and the person I'm criticizing goes "I'm literally PoC!!" Okay? Good for you? Get well soon??
I literally live in South Asia, a place still nursing the world's worst colonial hangover. That's like one billion brown people desperately in need of joining Bootlickers Anonymous. If I had to respect the rancid takes of every yahoo that lives here I'd have to drown myself in the sea.
Living in white countries does something odd to diaspora brains. If you call yourself BIPOC in your own head long enough you end up forgetting you're just a garden variety idiot mainlining white supremacy like everyone else.
#essay: why I hate the term BIPOC#1) it's North American as fuck#seriously the word has little meaning for Black and brown people in Europe. We're all just darkies over there bc the whites dgaf#also there's two systems of race over there. the global colour system that's a result of european colonization of the other continents#and the older system unique to the region where white Indo-Europeans hates the fuck out of everybody else#so you have to be very specific about the fact that you're coloured of skin#i mean black people in australia are aboriginals. 'black' even in the US used to be a political identity not only a racial one#2) i'm not fucking BIPOC in my own country. I just live here.#I am the default. it's whites that are alien and specified#considering we're literally the global majority‚ it would be very funny if we just called ourselves 'people' and only singled whites out#it's them that invented race after all. just so they could proclaim that white people were the master race#i know it wouldn't work bc then they'd all be like 'how DARE you call us white' like Zionists. but it would be funny#i just think that this whole BIPOC thing makes whites out to be default and makes us hyperaware of ourselves as political entities first#and fuels neoliberal identity politics that culminates in fighting over twitter hashtags and 'Diversity Equity Inclusion' bs#where they make Black and brown people mouthpieces and cops of white supremacy and imperialism#and calls it 'representation'#racism#white supremacy#colonialism#colonization#knee of huss
