Fish and Chips’ Surprising Jewish History. Jamie Oliver confirmed it!
You may be surprised to learn that fish and chips, though wildly popular in England for what seems like eternity, was actually a specialty of the Portuguese Sephardic Jews who fled the Inquisition in the 16th century and found refuge in the British Isles. Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver referred to this recently in an article in the New York Times, adding that, “Dishes evolve, impacted by trade, war, famine and a hundred other forces.”
Among those “other forces” are dishes born of religious ritual. For observant Jews, fish is pareve, a neutral food in kosher terms, thus an easy way to avoid treyf (non-kosher food) and possibly include dairy in the same meal. It was especially important for Marranos, the so-called crypto-Jews, who pretended to be Christian during the Inquisition. They ate fish on Fridays, when meat was forbidden by the Church, and also saved some to eat cold the next day at lunch, to avoid cooking on Shabbat.
Frying was natural for Jewish home cooks — think of latkes and sufganyiot — and as the Jewish community began to flourish in England, it spurred a taste for its beloved fried, battered fish throughout the country. According to Claudia Roden’s The Book of Jewish Food, Thomas Jefferson tried some on a trip to London and noted that he ate “fish in the Jewish fashion” during his visit. Alexis Soyer, a French cook who became a celebrated chef in Victorian England included a recipe for “Fried Fish, Jewish Fashion” in the first edition of his cookbook A Shilling Cookery for the People (1845). Soyer’s recipe notes that the “Jewish manner” includes using oil rather than meat fat (presumably lard), which made the dish taste better, though also made it more expensive.
There’s some dispute about the where and when of “chips” (what we Americans call French fries and the French call pommes frites). Many historians say that deep-fried, cut-up potatoes were invented in Belgium and, in fact, substituted for the fish during hard times. The first time the word “chips” was used was in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities in 1859: “husky chips of potato, fried with some reluctant drops of oil.”
The official pairing of fish and chips didn’t happen until a few years later, though. Although there are some who dispute it, most authorities say that it is thanks to a Jewish cook, this time a young Ashkenazi immigrant named Joseph Malin, who opened the first British chippy, AKA fish and chip shop, in London in 1863. The shop was so successful it remained in business until the 1970s.
Who could foresee that fearful Jewish immigrants hiding their true religion and practicing in secret would be responsible for creating one of the most iconic dishes in the U.K.? The down-home dish that Winston Churchill claimed help the British defeat the Nazis, the comfort food that George Orwell said helped keep the masses happy and “averted revolution.” The dish, by the way, that was among the only foods never rationed during wartime because the British government believed that preserving access to it was a way of keeping up morale. A dish that continues to be a mainstay of the British diet.
Think about that the next time you find yourself feasting on this centuries-old — Jewish? British? — recipe.
These days, some restaurants are putting a new spin on fish and chips. Almond crusted. Baked instead of fried. Quinoa coated. Sweet potato fries instead of regular. And those are all fine; as Oliver says, “Dishes evolve.” But plain old fish and chips endures and probably always will. Good recipes usually do.

BBC PIECE REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE "ISRAEL" RESPONSIBLE FOR MURDER OF FOREIGN AID WORKERS
📹 Footage from a BBC piece covering the deaths of 7 foreign aid workers with the World Central Kitchen (WCK) in an Israeli airstrike refuses to mention "Israel" as the party responsible for the slaughter.
The piece dances around ever mentioning the party responsible for the airstrike, instead discussing the "deaths" of the 7 foreign aid workers in "an airstrike". Even though Palestinian resistance forces do not possess such capabilities.
The piece even mentions how WCK coordinated its movements with the "IDF" (Israeli occupation forces [IOF]) but fails to connect the coordination with the murderous airstrike itself, choosing to avoid any mention of Zionist responsibility for the murder of the aid workers, which included British, Australian and Polish nationals, along with a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen and one Palestinian.

Whenever Brits are like "tea is our national drink, our culture, our personality, our mental health" I think of our hill country blanketed in a patchwork quilt of human suffering and ongoing violent colonialism and want to smash all their tea cups. Your genocidal leaf juice is nothing to be proud of. The present day tea pluckers are the descendants of the Indians you enslaved and they still live in unthinkable poverty in the line houses you built to house them like cattle. The families whose farmlands you robbed have been starving for generations. Every sip of your leaf juice is soaked in blood and you drink it like vampires.
Tea will never belong to you. It's our legacy of grief, and your shame.
Drink your tea and shut the fuck up.

I am being infected with Edwardian slang by my old lit-reading boyfriend and the Letters Regarding Jeeves substack, and I can't help but apply it to TGAA to torture Barok with it.
He can stand Iris's Edwardian vocabulary (with her being a detective and a writer of serials, I feel like she'd easily pick it up in her businesses) and Albert's occasional "Barok, old bean" because it's his dear Iris and Albert after all, but Barok will not tolerate Herlock's "Tally ho!", "Pip pip!" and "Reapy, old horse!" and will refuse to speak to him until he returns to proper address and Standard English.

Oh! Islam, Palestine made me addicted to you !!!
When Prince Charles was asked about Islam he replied 👇 And when Tony Blair, Ex PM of British's sister-in-law, a reverted Muslim was asked how to behave in this situation of Palestine Holocaust she replied so wisely 👇
Below is the Al Jazeera's Press Reporter, Wael Al-Dahdouh, who lost every one of his family and relatives, lastly his own son who was a reporter too and this is what he said, “Nothing hurts more than the pain of losing someone you hold dearly close to your heart. This is our destiny, our choice in this land, and we must accept it, whatever it is, as we continue, we bid farewell to our loved ones but what can we say. For Hamza and all the martyrs we will honour the vow, we will continue on the same road, we watered the land with our blood, but we will not stop, we might feel pain, we might suffer & nothing is more painful than losing your oldest son the soul of your soul. We are saturated with humanity, and our enemy is saturated with death and grudge, what moves us is humanity, and what moves our enemies is hatred.” 👌 Alhamdulillah.
We are at a height of the hypocrisy, barbarism & a culture of fascism:

Britain and Mauritius Reach Sovereignty Agreement on Chagos Islands
Britain announced on Thursday a significant agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. This deal will enable individuals displaced decades ago to return home while allowing London to maintain operational control of the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia.
British Foreign Minister David Lammy stated that the agreement ensures the continued operation of Diego Garcia, a strategically important military base jointly managed with the United States. The deal also paves the way for Mauritius to resettle its population on the islands, which were evacuated years ago.
“This government inherited a situation where the long-term, secure operation of the Diego Garcia military base was under threat due to contested sovereignty and ongoing legal challenges,” Lammy said. “Today’s agreement secures this vital military base for the future and strengthens our role in safeguarding global security, while also shutting down any potential use of the Indian Ocean as a dangerous illegal migration route to the UK.”
Britain has maintained control over the region since 1814, having detached the Chagos Islands from Mauritius in 1965. This move was made to establish the British Indian Ocean Territory, and in the early 1970s, nearly 2,000 residents were forcibly relocated to Mauritius and the Seychelles to facilitate the construction of the airbase.
In 2019, the World Court ruled that Britain should relinquish control of the islands, condemning the forced removal of the population in the 1970s to accommodate the US airbase.
The recent political agreement between Britain and Mauritius has garnered support from both the United States and India.

You all need to play Sovereign Syndicate
It is a crime that the Sovereign Syndicate has such a small fandom. It's basically Disco Elysium in steampunk London, except:
Harry DuBois is an alcoholic minotaur magician
Klassje is a psychic sex worker
Kim Kitsuragi is a secretly sentient automaton
The Deserter is a monster-hunting dwarf with PTSD
Yes, it's smaller and shorter than other RPGS because the studio only had 20 people. But it's DAMN impressive for an indie game of its size, and well worth the price.
Also there's a side quest where you can supply machine gun blueprints to the Comanche Nation for use against the Texan invaders. Just saying.
#sovereign syndicate#disco elysium#also you really don't need to know anything about tarot#the tarot mechanic just adds extra character insight for people who do know the card meanings#indie games#anti-colonialism#this is a timeline where Britain did not become a global empire and got its ass kicked by every country it tried to colonize

Ambassador Zomlot on Palestine, Israel's occupation, global politics and the history of the creation of this situation, misrepresentation of the media, the hypocrisy and lack of accountability of the West at large, the poor international management of this situation
Please educate yourselves about the historical context of all of this
It is imperative we all know how it began, to understand what is happening, the lack of accountability of those in the global community who actually created this conflict, and their unwillingness to hold perpetrators accountable with the international law that was created for these exact purposes.
We must understand and acknowledge how this began, to properly understand how to stop and resolve this situation for good. To properly understand how to practically implement solutions for long term resolution.
Innocent civilians cannot pay the price for the hypocrisy and hesitancy of the global community any longer. They should never have had to.
Ambassador Zomlot spoke eloquently and incredibly effectively despite the condescending gotcha journalism approach of his interviewer.
He is concerned about actually stopping and resolving this issue.
British people never like being held accountable for their own role in international conflicts, invasions etc but it is crucial to acknowledge how this began, how this situation was created so it can be effectively resolved.
The big hesitancy block here, of course, is the international community taking responsibility for their actions and holding themselves accountable for what they created, acknowledging what it is that they created, and working to help resolve the situation properly, practically, immediately.

The conservative cause has been polluted by the ideology of big business, by the global ambitions of the multinational companies, and by the ascendancy of economics in the thinking of modern politicians.
- Sir Roger Scruton, How To Be a Conservative
I’ve always said that the word ‘conservative’ is the most abused word in the political dictionary. For those of us who have a conservative disposition towards arts, culture, and society but don’t automatically align ourselves with the actual political Conservative party, it is a continued cause for grief.
I believe Adam Smith and Edmund Burke - both badly misunderstood and misquoted thinkers - as well as the late Sir Roger Scruton would be turning in their graves at how the poor state of current British conservatism has morphed into some cultish free market libertarian wet dream.

A NUMBER OF CAUSTIES RESULTING FROM US AND BRITISH AIRSTRIKES ON YEMEN, ANSAR-ALLAH RESPONDS
📹 Scenes of the dead and wounded at a hospital in Hodeidah, Yemen, after American and British warplanes bombed the radio building in the city.
According to Al-Mayadeen, the United States and Britain targeted Sana'a and Hodeidah in Yemen with a total of 13 raids, resulting in the death of two people, and wounded several others.
US and British airstrikes on Thursday/Friday night targeted the capital of Sana'a, along with the port of Al-Salif, in the Hodeidah Governate, and Al-Hawk district, south of Hodeidah.
Three other raids targeted Al-Nahdain area, another the Sana'a international airport, while third struck the coastal area of Ghalifaqa, in the Al-Durayhimi district, south of the Hodeidah Governate.
Local residents reported that American and British bombing targeted the Radio Tower in in Al-Hawk district, on the coast of the Red Sea, in Yemen's west, killing two people and wounding a several others.
Also targeted was the communications network in the Haifan district, south of Taiz Governate, in the southwest of Yemen, while two other strikes bombed the Jarban area of the Sanhan district, south of Sana'a.
In response to the strikes, Al-Mayadeen says a member of Ansar-Allah movement's Politboro, Ali Al-Qahhoum, reminds that the attacks on Yemen by the United States and Britain are nothing new, and that the aggression by the two Western countries has been ongoing for years, and is not a result of the things going on at this moment.
He confirms that Yemen's ongoing operations, to blockade Israeli and Israeli-allied ships from the Red Sea, will continue until the siege and aggression against Gaza ends and "will not stop before that."
"If the Americans want the conflict not to expand, they must stop the aggression and siege on Gaza. Otherwise, the Yemeni strikes will continue and expand," Al-Qahhoum is quoted as saying.
“Yemen will undoubtedly respond to the aggression, and the Americans and the British will not be able to repel it, and it will certainly be a painful response."
Al-Qahhoum explains that the American and the British leadership must “realize the extent of the escalation of Yemen’s power, and that our ballistic missiles will reach their targets at sea and in our occupied land.”
He reiterated to Al-Mayadeen that Yemen "has an open hand for peace with neighboring countries, but in return it will not delay in responding to any source of aggression."
" Yemen will not yield, and the Americans and the British are opening the gates of hell upon themselves, and we advise nearby countries not to get involved again."
Al-Qahhoum concluded by saying, "The battle with the Americans and the British today is a battle of dignity and honour. Yemen has great capabilities for confrontation, and the aggressors must bear the response."
