Brazil Took on Musk and Won. Now Lula Is Sharing Notes With Europe
European governments reeling from Elon Musk’s political attacks are comparing notes with fellow targets all-too familiar with the X owner’s methods.
Brazil briefly took down X last year over hate speech and fake news, and is heading for a broader showdown with social media networks as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva mounts a crusade against disinformation that he says is so pervasive it’s undermining democracy.
It’s an approach that’s being closely watched in Europe: In recent days, Lula, as Brazil’s leader is known, has held calls with French President Emmanuel Macron and with Antonio Costa, the Portuguese president of the European Council, about ways to preserve countries’ sovereignty and the battle against disinformation, racism, misogyny and hate crimes spread on social media.
Macron and Lula have had “many” conversations on the topic and “Brazil is bringing its expertise in several areas,” said Tiennot Sciberras, press counselor of the French Embassy in Brazil. “In this area of fighting against disinformation it is Brazil that is pulling us along.”
Lula’s rallying call is resonating more widely as Musk amplifies fake news and conspiracy theories on X while taking on political leaders in the UK, Germany and the European Union. How the fightback plays out may result in a model for how to respond — or a lesson in the limits of government influence over big tech.

ok so in the span of like 5 hours:
- the south korean president declared martial law (the first time since s korea stopped being a military dictatorship in the 80s)
- claims his political opponents are insurgents working on behalf of north korea and communism
- declares that all political activity must cease (inc the national assembly/parliament), all media must be under the control of the military, and all protests/strikes are illegal
- the opposing political party immediately assembles at the national assembly in the middle of the night
- holds an emergency vote that goes thru 190-0 to declare the end to martial law (while barricading the entrances to prevent the military from entering and removing them)
- the president concedes an hour later
- civilian protesters in the streets are calling for the impeachment & arrest of the president
please feel free to add details/correct me

It is admittedly difficult to find footage of protests, but they are out there. Maybe not by marches or posters... but through boycotts, and chatter.
They are afraid for us.
Just sharing this here cause this is terrifying bro
I legit thought the whole rest of the world was leaning far apt right and in favour of trump and I almost had NO HOPE. I even told my partner this morning that I was so worried that there would be nobody on the outside who would step up for us. My partner who does research 24/7 didn’t see ANY news about international protests. Everything we learned was that everyone outside of the US was in agreement with this shit man (at least, international governments were in agreement)
If you’re non-american Please give me hope and tell me there are voices outside of the US speaking up for us and fighting where we literally cannot even see or access.

In an effort to strengthen diplomatic ties between the global superpowers’ most oafish representatives, sources confirmed Thursday that schlubs from the United States and China met in Australia this week for a series of lowest-level talks.
The noisy, poorly dressed delegations, which convened for multiple sessions of bilateral discussion at a Best Western motor inn just outside Brisbane, reportedly addressed a range of issues important to schlubs in both countries, including reducing tariffs on microwaveable mozzarella sticks, establishing worldwide manufacturing standards for foam beer koozie production, and generally fostering a spirit of goodwill and cooperation within the international slob community. By the way, even if you fully plan to vote for Biden in November (because Trump would be worse and has declared that if elected he would ban Palestinians from entering the US x, x, x, x)...
You can and I would argue should call or email Biden or whatever other Democrats represent you and just straight up lie about it. Tell them "I'm a constituent, and I've voted for you in x number of elections, and thanks to your support for the genocide of the Palestinian people, I will never, ever vote for you again."
Politicians, Democrats, and especially Biden need a fire lit under their asses, because the vast majority of them clearly aren't going to do shit without one. Or, worse, be like Biden and actively be the reason that Israel can continue its genocide on a political, monetary, and military level.
Tell Biden and other politicians that you will never vote for them again. It doesn't matter if it's true. It will help pressure US politicians to stop this genocide, and therefore it's the right thing to do.
Obviously this also applies to other countries where politicians are supporting Israel's genocide, especially countries that have cut funding to UNRWA (list here).

There was booing of the American national anthem recently at Canadian sporting events, which says it all.
I'm also starting to think that it might see a sea change with how the United States is seen. If we can isolate our closest ally (~3.5 hours from Seattle to Vancouver via car), why does anybody have a reason to trust us?
To be clear I don't want a trade war with Mexico (or even China)
but Trump breaking our relationship with Canada, Canada, our ever friendly, dependable, helpful brothers to the north, is particularly hurtful. It feels like an abusive step-father banning you from a favorite cousin's house because they want to isolate you to keep beating you. It's painful and heart breaking and your cousin keeps asking you to explain and you can't.
sorry Canada, I didn't vote for him, I campaigned against him hard, but a bunch of idiots voted to blow up everything and hurt everyone so do what you have to do, maybe if you inflict maximum pain some people will wake up.
and to Americans reading this, I can't over stress we have FOREVER damaged our relationship with our neighbor, biggest trading partner, military and strategic ally, we fought WWII with them guys, and they are NEVER gonna look at us the same way again. We might repair the relationship in future but it'll never be as full a friendship as it was last month.

As an American taking International Policy, I have never been more confused than I am watching the Tiktok -> Rednote pipeline
-> Millions of left wing Americans join a Chinese platform out of spite against racist, radical right Congress
-> Chinese users are very welcoming (they aren't left or right wing because there's a sole ruling party in China)
-> Chinese users and American users get along exceptionally well, and bond over cats and respectful questions
-> American users chose Rednote over Meta because of censorship
-> Rednote is even more censored than Meta, as seen in its terms and agreements, and Americans can't really discuss politics there
-> America will soon be run by a soon-to-be-dictator, and the Americans on Rednote hate him
-> China is controlled by a dictator with a fifteen-year streak, and we don't know how the Chinese people feel about him, because they don't have free speech or protest rights
-> Trump and Jinping get along
-> Jinping doesn't want Americans to give the Chinese people any ideas
-> Trump doesn't want China to give the American people any ideas
I don't---I don't know what to think? I don't think this has ever happened before?
Either this gives MAGA a huge advantage or we're about to see a joint Chinese-American people's revolution (half joking 😬)

"Tuesday’s [April 9, 2024] definition-shifting court ruling means nearly 50 governments must now contend with a new era of climate litigation.
Governments be warned: You must protect your citizens from climate change — it’s their human right.
The prescient message was laced throughout a dense ruling Tuesday from Europe’s top human rights court. The court’s conclusion? Humans have a right to safety from climate catastrophes that is rooted in their right to life, privacy and family.
The definition-shifting decision from the European Court of Human Rights means nearly 50 governments representing almost 700 million people will now have to contend with a new era of litigation from climate-stricken communities alleging inaction.
While the judgment itself doesn’t include any penalties — the case featured several women accusing Switzerland of failing to shield them from climate dangers — it does establish a potent precedent that people can use to sue governments in national courts.
The verdict will serve “as a blueprint for how to successfully sue your own government over climate failures,” said Ruth Delbaere, a legal specialist at Avaaz, a U.S.-based nonprofit that promotes climate activism...
Courting the courts on climate
The European Court of Human Rights was established in the decade following World War II but has grown in importance over the last generation. As the judicial arm of the Council of Europe, an international human rights organization, the court’s rulings are binding on the council’s 46 members, spanning all of Europe and numerous countries on its borders.
As a result, Tuesday’s [April 9, 2024] ruling will help elevate climate litigation from a country-by-country battle to one that stretches across continents.
Previously, climate activists had mostly found success in suing individual countries to force climate action.
A 2019 Dutch Supreme Court verdict forced the Netherlands to slash its greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent, while in 2021 a French court ruled the government was responsible for environmental damage after it failed to meet greenhouse gas reduction goals. That same year, Germany’s Constitutional Court issued a sweeping judgment that the country’s 2019 climate law was partly “unconstitutional” because it put too much of the emissions-cutting burden on future generations.
Even in the U.S., young environmental activists won a local case last year against state agencies after arguing that the continued use of fossil fuels violated their right to a "clean and healthful environment."
But 2024 is shaping up to be a turning point for climate litigation, redefining who has a right to sue over climate issues, what arguments they can use, and whom they can target.
To start, experts overwhelmingly expect that Tuesday’s ruling will reverberate across future lawsuits — both in Europe and globally. The judgment even includes specifics about what steps governments must take to comply with their new climate-related human rights obligations. The list includes things like a concrete deadline to reach climate neutrality, a pathway to getting there, and evidence the country is actually on that path...
Concretely, the verdict could also affect the outcomes of six other high-profile climate lawsuits pending before the human rights court, including a Greenpeace-backed suit questioning whether Norway's decision to grant new oil and gas licenses complies with its carbon-cutting strategy.
An emerging legal strategy
In the coming months, other international bodies are also expected to issue their own rulings on the same thorny legal issues, which could further solidify the evolving trend.
The International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights all have similar cases working through the system.
"All these cases together will clarify the legal obligations of states to protect rights in the context of climate change — and will set the stage for decades to come," said Chowdhury, from the environmental law center."

Media censorship is very real- even in a country where its first Amendment circulates around free speech. Other countries indeed do not support Trump. They've even put a red flag alert (GENOCIDE) on our country because of Trump.
TikTok has codewords to get around censorship: cute winter boots. Look that up, and you should be able to find more information on there. My blog also has a lot of what's been going on- reblogs, my own takes, resources, etc. You can also use a VPN, if you have the money to pay for one to reach outside this country, to access uncensored media. Canada does not work, but Australia does, as far as I know. I can't afford VPN memberships to be able to confirm this. But even "Trump rigged the election" is considered "banned content" on TikTok, and I've seen several sources say that REAL HISTORY about the HOLOCAUST has been flagged by TikTok as "misinformation." Which, considering The Diary of Anne Frank is on the list of banned books for 2025, I'm not too surprised.
I also have a link to a Discord server I'm in, and I can DM it to you. I don't want to post it here in case trolls flood it. @sunflowerseedinbloom

Denmark returns iconic indigenous cloak to Brazil
The National Museum of Denmark is handing over an iconic cloak belonging to an indigenous group in Brazil at a ceremony being attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Considered sacred by the indigenous Tupinambá people, the garment was taken from Brazil during the Portuguese colonial period and has been on display in Copenhagen since 1689.
The 1.8m-long cloak is made of 4,000 red feathers from the scarlet ibis bird.
Brazil’s government has been trying to recover artefacts taken during the colonial period from around the world.
