Smile So She Could See You
Okay so, uhhhh..... heheh..... This is a bit on the angsty side; more hurt/comfort than anything else. Ngl, this hit a little too close to home as I very much relate to this, but it is what it is. If you're a fan of angst/hurt/comfort, this is for you! Enjoy!
Summary: Jasper isn't having a good day as memories of his mother flood his mind; they're all good but they make him miss her. Luckily, Justin comes by the manor to help cheer him up, and to remind him that he isn't alone

⚠️Warning⚠️: a lot of angst, mentions of deceased parent
When you look at Jasper, you would think he looks like such a sweetheart who couldn't even hurt a fly; you would be right to believe that. The heir to House Pomefiore is a kind and selfless young man who helps out his people in every way he can. He's on good terms with the royal family and the other nobles in Ernestia, though he does have some trouble connecting with House Lanister. However, behind those soft orange eyes lies a broken and mournful soul.
When Jasper was only 10, his mother, Countess Dahlia, was plagued with an uncurable sickness by a spiteful mage. When she died, everything that was hers went to him, from her jewelry to her garden. Jasper's soul shattered, and his heart ached. His father, Count Immanuel, felt the same way. It took some time to overcome the sadness, and he was grateful to find solace and support from Princess Gladiola, for she, too, knows the agony of losing a mother. Many years have passed, and Jasper found the confidence to keep going and pushing forward; it's what his mother wanted. However, there are days when Jasper looks at a family picture and breaks down, crying his eyes out. At times, Jasper feels alone without his mother being around, but luckily, Jasper has a great friend to remind him that he is never alone.
It was a warm summer afternoon, and Justin Lorenz Laverre decided to visit Jasper unexpectedly. Justin was known to do this, and Count Immanuel always welcomed the young nobleman in his home, for he saw how close the two were.
"Ah, young Justin," Count Immanuel said, "Welcome!"
"Good to see you, M'Lord." Justin said with a slight bow.
The older man shook his head and lightly embraced the young nobleman, patting his back gently. Justin smiled and returned the gesture. The Count viewed the young nobleman as a son, and in turn, Justin viewed the Count as a father, and the feelings were mutual. When the two parted, the Count placed a hand on Justin's back and led him into the castle-like manor.
"Where's Jasper?" Justin asked.
"Ah, yes, he should be in his room," Count Immanuel said, "If not, he is in the garden."
Justin nodded and left the older man's side.
"Oh, Justin!" the Count called out.
The raven-haired man stopped and turned around.
"When you find him, do be courteous," Count Immanuel said, "His day so far has not been the brightest, so if you could-"
"Say no more, M'Lord," Justin said, "I will do what I can."
The Count smiled and nodded. After they exchanged bows, Justin went looking for his friend. When Justin reached Jasper's room, he knocked on the door and waited. When there was no reply, Justin knocked again; still nothing. Justin turned the knob and opened the door, only to be greeted by an empty room. His friend's bed was messy, and some papers were scattered across the nearby desk. As Justin approached the bed, he saw small wet stains on the pearl-colored pillow and tissues in the nearby trash bin.
"Oh, Jas..." Justin said sadly.
When he walked over to the desk, the papers scattered were poems. He recognized some of the poetry as being from Jasper's late mother.
"He must've been reading them." Justin muttered to himself.
After Jasper straightened out his friend's desk, he left the room, shutting the door behind him. After a few minutes of walking, Justin walked through the garden's white doors, taking in the scent of the flowers. As the young nobleman walked around, he heard soft sobbing. When he turned the corner, Justin's heart ached when he saw Jasper on his knees, crying on the side of the garden's fountain. Justin glanced up and saw that the fountain had a statue of his mother. Justin sighed before walking over. Jasper's head perked up when he heard someone approaching, and he quickly wiped away his tears. When he turned around, he smiled when he saw Justin.
"O-Oh, J-Justin," Jasper said, his voice shaking, "W-What are you doing here?"
"I came over to see you, Jas." Justin said, extending a hand.
Jasper smiled before taking his friend's hand and pulling himself up. The two sat on the fountain's edge in a peaceful yet awkward silence. When Justin looked at his friend, he saw Jasper blinking back tears.
"Oh, Jasper..." Justin said sadly.
Jasper let out a sob before crying in his hands. Justin frowned and pulled his friend into a side hug. Overcome with emotion, Jasper wrapped his arms around his friend and held onto him like a lifeline. Justin steadied himself to avoid falling into the fountain before embracing his friend tightly.
"It's okay, Jas; I'm right here. I'm here," Justin said softly, "Let it out; I'm right here."
Jasper's shoulders bounced as he sobbed into his friend's shoulder.
"I miss her so much..." Jasper sobbed.
"I know, buddy, I know..." Justin said, feeling tears sting his eyes.
Justin knows what it feels like to lose a parent; it's not easy. The heir to House Laverre tightened his embrace around his friend as he blinked back his tears. Minutes passed, Jasper's tense shoulders dropped, and his grip around Justin loosened. His crying stopped, but he still hiccupped a few breaths here and there. Justin rubbed his friend's back, feeling him calm down. The two held each other in peaceful silence before Jasper sighed and pulled away from Justin. He wiped away the lingering tears and sniffled.
"Are you okay?" Justin asked softly.
Jasper only nodded. Justin frowned and pulled his friend into a side hug. Jasper sighed and leaned his head on Justin's shoulder. A peaceful silence fell between them as the birds sang and the wind blew. Justin glanced down at his friend and saw that Jasper still looked sad.
"Aw, c'mon, Jas," Justin began, "Where's that smile?"
Jasper glanced up at Justin before glancing away with a frown. Justin scoffed with a sly smirk before resting his hand near the other's side. Jasper flinched a bit and moved closer to his friend's side. Justin couldn't help but chuckle and started poking around House Pomefiore's heir's side, causing Jasper to breathe out a small chuckle and swipe at the other's hand.
"What's wrong, Jas?" Justin asked, chuckling.
"N-Nothihihing." Jasper said, letting a giggle slip.
"What's so funny, huh?"
The brunette gasped when Justin started tweaking and pinching Jasper's side before giggling and squirming.
"Justihihihihihin! Quit ihihihit!" Jasper giggled as he tried to push away the other's hand.
Justin only chuckled before picking up Jasper and plopping him in his lap, resuming his tickling. The younger nobleman giggled as he tried to squirm away from the other's hands.
"Juhuhuhuhustihihihin, nohohoho!" Jasper giggled, "T-Thahahat tihihickles!"
"I'd sure hope so, Jas," Justin said, "I'd hate myself if I were hurting you."
Jasper tried to latch onto Justin's wrists, but the black-haired young man easily avoided his friend's grabby hands. Justin couldn't help but laugh along with his friend. Feeling cheeky, Justin latched onto his friend's legs and started tickling his thighs and knees while playfully bouncing him on his lap. Jasper lurched forward and let out a loud giggle, giggling more as his giggles sounded as Justin bounced him.
"You are ehehehehevil!" Jasper giggled, "Nahahaha! Justihihihihin!"
"Heh, yup, that's me," Justin said casually, "You'll get used to it."
Jasper covered his mouth and giggled into his hand while trying to squirm away from the tickle monster he called friend. Justin moved his hands back to Jasper's side and tickled him there.
"Justin, stohohohop tihihihickling meeeeheheheheee!" Jasper half-whined.
"Nuh-uh," Justin said, "I hate seeing you so sad, and I don't want you to be sad anymore."
Jasper threw his head back and laughed against his friend's shoulder. When Justin started clawing at the other's ribs, Jasper began to jerk every which way, letting out small cackle-like giggles.
"Nahahahaha! Not thehehehehere!" Jasper cried, "Justihihihihin, stahahahahap!"
"Aww, is the heir of House Pomefiore too ticklish?" Justin teased, "Huh, is he? Is he too ticklish?"
Justin let a Cheshire grin spread across his face when he saw Jasper's ears turn a deep scarlet. He then let his dull nails lightly scratch around the other's ribs, sending Jasper up the wall.
"S-Shuhuhut uhuhuhup!" Jasper giggled, "That makes it wohohohohohorse!"
"Haha, aww~! Does me teasing you make it worse?" Justin asked, "Does teasing you make it tickle, tickle, tickle even more~?"
Justin punctuated his words as he pinched the other's ribs, causing Jasper to almost melt into his touch.
"Hmm, y'know what?" Justin asked, "You're not smiling as much as I want you to. Guess we're just gonna have to pull out the big guns."
"W-Wahahahait, what do you mehehehean?" Jasper asked.
Justin chuckled evilly before shoving his hands under Jasper's arms. A tingle ran up his spine as Jasper instinctively pressed his arms to his sides and laughed.
"NAHAHAHAHA! JUSTIIHIHIHIHIN!" Jasper cried, "NAHAHAT THEHEHEHRE!"
"Haha, there we go," Justin said as he leaned near Jasper's ear, "There's that smile~"
Jasper squealed as he shook his head.
"DON'T DO THAHAHAHAT!" Jasper laughed.
"Don't do what? Whisper teases in your ear?" Justin asked, doing just that, "Reminding you how adorably ticklish you are~?"
Jasper let out a slight whine before dissolving into more boyish laughter. Justin looked at his friend and smiled, seeing how he looked a lot better. He had a bright smile and laughed without a care in the world.
"LEAVE ME EHEHEHEHEARS ALOHOHONE!" Jasper cried, "AND GET OHOHOHOUT FROM UNDER MY AHAHAHARMS!"
Justin couldn't help but laugh.
"Oh, my goodness, you are so freaking cute when you laugh like this!" Justin laughed.
"NO, I'M NOHOHOHOHOT!" Jasper laughed.
"Huh, I didn't know we were lying today."
Jasper let out a cackle as he tried to push his friend's hands from his armpits.
"JUSTIHIHIHIHIN, PLEHEHEHEASE!" Jasper cried, tears dotting the corners of his eyes, "I CAN'T TAHAHAHAKE IT ANYMOHOHOHOHOHORE!"
"Heh, to think you can hold your own in battle but can't handle a bit of tickling," Justin teased, "That's pretty funny when you-"
Justin's sentence was cut off when Jasper jerked backward. Then, the two boys fell into the fountain with a loud splash. When the boys wiped away the water from their faces and glanced at each other, they burst into laughter. As their laughter died down, a peaceful silence fell between them.
"Feeling better, Jas?" Justin asked.
"Haha, yeah," Jasper replied, "A lot better."
Justin smiled as he patted his friend's back.
"You know, my mother used to tickle me all the time when I was younger," Jasper said suddenly, "Whenever I was sad or frustrated, she'd tickle me to help me calm down... like you did."
Justin felt touched hearing his friend's words, happy that he could get Jasper to smile, and in a similar manner to his mother.
"Thank you, Justin," Jasper said with a chuckle, "I'd forgotten how ticklish I was, haha."
"Well, I hope I was able to help you remember how adorable and ticklish you are~" Justin said, tweaking the other side.
Justin snickered and twisted away.
"Enohohough!" Jasper laughed, "I'm too tickled out! Hahaha!"
Justin happily laughed along as he playfully splashed the other with water. Jasper giggled before returning the gesture. The boys soon stood up and started running around the fountain, splashing each other with water.
Losing someone you love is hard, and it could take some time to heal from that, but having friends who love you dearly will always be by your side to remind you that you're not alone.
