November 2023 Empties (& Mini Reviews).
Years ago on my old Tumblr, I did a side blog which did reviews & the likes of that sort of thing. One of these things I did was a monthly empties & mini reviews of these products. I've decided to have another try at this (I've also been inspired by various YT channels & IG pages which are based on panning products & also monthly empties). It would also possibly be helpful to me if I see something that I have used & remind me that I did like it considering my memory recently has been terrible.
Anyway, so far this is the empties for last month that I will also do mini reviews on. If I do another one next month & it has some of these products I won't include them. Anyway, I'll start with the first product:
Simple 10% Vitamin B3 Niacinamide Booster Serum:
I liked this serum! I've used various brands of niacinamide serums over the past few years & I really liked this one. It was nice to apply and it had an almost creamy feel to it. I also preferred it to The Ordinary's serum as that always had a sticky feel to it (though I did like that had the inclusion of zinc to it). I would definetly get this again.
Simple Age Resisting Day Cream with SPF 15:
This was just a simple (no pun intended) moisturiser & does what it says- keeps my skin moisturised. There is no scent to this. I would use this again but I do wish the SPF was higher.
Erbario Toscano Rose Shower Gel:
This smells absolutely gorgeous! I love rose scented things & the smell of this also reminds me of Turkish Delight (not the chocolate one).
It does feel like you need to get a good few squirts for it to foam though. It lasted a while (I got this in August). I would definetly get this again if I see it in TK Maxx.
The Body Shop Lime & Matcha Hair & Body Mist:
This smelt very limey! It's a super refreshing scent and is great scent for throughout the day when you need a pick me up. Sadly though this seems to have been discontinued. I picked this up in TK Maxx for about Ā£6 (I think the original price was either Ā£10 or Ā£12).
Nourish Body Scrub- Rosehip & Coffee:
I got this from (surprise, surprise) TK Maxx. I thought it would have a rose like scent but it didn't- it was a very strong coffee smell (which didn't bother me as I like the smell of coffee).
Its a dry scrub which I'm not used to- I'm used to using ones that lather up. It does an amazing job of exfoilating & left my skin feeling soft. However, I would not purchase this again. It's very harsh (I actually managed to scratch myself with it) & it's incredibly messy.
e.l.f Eye Primer:
This is really good & is also a reasonable price. I've used a Maxfactor or Revlon eye primer in the past & it was horrible; I've also used the Urban Decay one which is brilliant but pricey. Since I've been trying to practice using eyeshadow, I've been using the e.l.f eye primer & it does the job. It does such a good job, I'm on to my second tube.
Cogerie Hyaluronic Anti Age Serum:
I like this serum so so much! It does have a light floral scent so if you don't like scents in your skincare, bear that in mind. My skin always felt soft after using this & it kept my skin hydrated. I also like the design on the bottle, its really pretty.
I do have two problems with this though: the first one being that I always struggle getting the remainder of the serum in bottles that have a pipette in them. The second is I got this from TK Maxx so it's anyone's guess whether they'll have this in stock again. I would definetly get this again though.
Garnier Skinactive Micellar Cleansing Oil Infused Water:
This is the best thing I have ever used to remove my makeup- it gets my Barry M Genie Lipstick off effortlessly and it is great removing waterproof makeup. I get the blue one (the yellow one dries out my hands & makes them sting).
And there you have it- my monthly empties. Do you have any empties that you would get again? Is anything on this list you would try?
I'm also sorry for the appalling photos. Standard lighting and phone camera does not make great ones.

Skincare Routine for Hyperpigmentation
Hi! This is Ivy <3 I used to struggle. with breakouts, oil, and hyperpigmentation for about 3 years. Among other things, I tried some of The Ordinary and Good Molecules products in America, then Tretinoin (helped for a couple weeks) and biweekly facials when I moved to Shanghai. Nothing worked and my skin didn't significantly improve. I stripped my routine down to the essentials and started over again. I've seen MASSIVE improvements, so I thought I'd share with you all.
I started using Garnier Micellar Water to wipe my make up off.
I saw a tiktok saying that salicylic acid was good for darker skin tones. I went to Sephora and I bought the Inkylist Salycic Acid Cleanser. I swear by this now.
The first time I visited the pharmacy in Italy, I told the pharmacist what I was using on my skin (Avene) and she immediately redirected me to using the Effaclar Duo (+) as a moisturizer. This really helped prevent breakouts and slowly lightened my spots. It's really strong and I don't need it anymore. Now I use the normal La Roche Posay Moisturizing Lotion.
I switched my SPF out for some REAL mineral sunscreen. I loveee Bubbly Solar Mate SPF. Sunscreen helps even the skin tone and protects from further sun damage.
Clean off as much of your make up as possible before cleansing, keep your skin properly hydrated, and WEAR SPF.
I don't know what the science is or what magic cleared my skin, but my skin tone is so much more even, I rarely get any break outs, and I'm a lottt less oily.

to the hand washing anon: using makeup remover helps. I also get extra anxiety about the smell of my hands and heard it once (I think on tumblr years ago)
make up remover wipes, or using like a cleanser for your face has helped me too. iirc using something that helps break down oils was the point. I use a little bit of garnier micellar water and then wash with regular hand soap

HOW I PROPERLY WASH MY FACE TO ACHIEVE CLEAR SKIN
: ĢĢāAs someone who wears make up and spends my time to create a look, I also spend my time to clean and undo my face and skin. DOUBLE CLEANSING has been part and probably the reason why it helped me so much with achieving a clear skin and I rarely break out too nowadays. Here are my steps on how I properly wash my face to achieve that clear skin.
āSTEPS 1 and 2: Prep before cleansing āSTEPS 3, 4, 5, and 6: Meticulous process to remove make (eyes and especially lashes) āSTEPS 7, 8, and 9: Cleansing the face with cleansing balm āSTEPS 10, 11, and 12: Proper way of cleansing face with cleanser
ą¼*Ā·ĖProducts that I used: Cleansing balm: I either use the Banila Co Zero Cleansing Balm or the Heimish All Clean Balm Micellar Water: Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Cleanser & Makeup Remover Cleansing foam: Senka Perfect Whip Moist Cleansing Foam (my personal holy grail)
1.Before anything else, I always wash my hands first with a hand soap. The first thing that comes contact to your skin is your hands and finger tips so it's best to always wash your hands first before you do your cleansing routine. 2. I use a headband and tie my hair into a bun so it doesn't get in the way with washing my face. 3. Using my cleansing balm, I scoop out a fair amount and start warming it up with my fingers for it to melt. I apply the melted balm to my eyes first to remove the eye make up. ā°āā¤I always always prioritize my lashes and I use my ring finger to clean my lashes to clean off the mascara. I take my time to clean my lashes until the mascara is off or any of the make up residue. 4. Once I'm done, I use a cotton pad to gently wipe of the remaining balm and residue 5. I use a q tip and wet it with a micellar water to remove any of the oil residue from the lash I use the other side of the q tip (the dry side) to clean my tear duct. 6. Once I'm done with the other eye, I do the steps 3, 4, 5, and 6 to the other eye before I proceed with double cleansing my face. 7. I use the same cleansing balm and scoop another amount and warm it up until it's melted and start to apply it all over my face. ā°āā¤Cheeksā°āā¤Foreheadā°āā¤Chin These are the areas that my skin gets very congested when I apply make up so I always take my time and focus these areas by cleansing it off to get rid of dirt and any residue. 8. Before I wipe off my face, I let the balm stay for a minute before wiping it off with a clean and dry cotton pad AWAY FROM THE FACE (wiping it outwards the face)
9. Now this step, I wet my face before using a foam cleanser and squeezing enough amount unto my middle finger. 10. I emulsify my cleanser by adding a bit of water until it gets into a foamy like texture and applying to my wet face and gently washing my face. ā°āā¤Don't scrub and harshly wash it because it causes abrasions to your skin. ā°āā¤Wash your face for a minute 11. Rinse thoroughly and pat your face with a clean towel.
.ąØāÆ "After these meticulous steps I proceed with my next routines" āÆą§.
Let me know if you guys want to have another skin care routine of mine I could share! I am open for questions regarding these matters!ā į¢.Ė¬.į¢āĖąØą§

AM routine
Garnierās micellar water to cleanse (pink cap ā I think the blue and green leave a residue and I donāt like it)
Byomaās balancing face mist

Cosrx snail mucin essence (this is a winter step, just to make sure my skin stays nice and hydrated)
Byoma gel eye cream (the de-puffing one)

Cleanser (1) ā natriumās oil balm/makeup remover with a warm washcloth
Cleanser (2) ā I alternate every other day with youth to the peopleās superfood cleanser (I just got it and Iām obsessed) and panoxyl (10%). Iāve also used versedās jelly milky cleanser on non-panoxyl days, and I love that, too!
Byomaās balancing face mist toner OR beauty of joseonās ginseng toner (I alternate)
Natriumās hyaluronic acid serum (apply while face is still wet from toner ā otherwise it wonāt absorb properly!)

The only product from Dream's skincare routine I remember is that he had a specific watermelon shea sugar scrub (I think the brand is tree hut? don't quote me on that), and I really only remember it because I swear all of smiletwt was buying it in the week after he mentioned it to us
LMAO to be fair I bought it when he talked about it because I was so curious if it worked nicely and I use fruity scented body washes and stuff so I was READY to smell like a fruit salad post-shower š
He uses some charlotte tilbury blush and maybe some other stuff, and he had a dior lip oil at some point, and just some normal garnier micellar water. He had a makeup sponge so he probably had some sort of concealer or foundation as well but idk if the brand was ever shown.

Got a new fancy shmancy micellar water (from the brand I swear by and exclusively buy my face wash and moisturizer from) and the good news is that it works very well, much better than the garnier brand I'd been using. The bad news is that it works a little too well and it's bringing a lot of stuff to the surface (breaking me out) and I have a small burn near my mouth. Right before halloween:(

ā what to carry in your makeup bag - skincare edition ā
A good skincare routine should be simple, consistent, and tailored to their specific skin type and concerns. It's essential to prioritize gentle and hydrating products while avoiding harsh ingredients. Here's a basic daily skincare routine to follow:
Morning:
Cleansing - use a mild, gentle cleanser suited for your skin type. Look for one that removes dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Cerave's cleansers are a great option designed for different types of skins.
Toning - apply an alcohol-free toner to help balance the skin's pH levels and prepare it for the next steps of your routine. Toners can also provide light hydration and soothe the skin. Lush's toners are my favorite.
Vitamin C Serum - apply a Vitamin C serum to help brighten the skin, fade dark spots, and protect it from environmental damage. Allow the serum to absorb fully before moving to the next step.
Eye Cream - gently dab on an eye cream to address any under-eye puffiness or dark circles. Look for an eye cream with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or peptides. Mine is from L'oreal.
Moisturizing - choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer suitable for your skin type. Moisturizing is crucial for keeping the skin hydrated and maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
Sunscreen - apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, even on cloudy days. This protects the skin from harmful UV rays and helps prevent premature aging and sun damage. Isdin's sunscreen is all over Tiktok because of how great it is.
Everning:
Makeup Removal - before starting your evening routine, make sure to remove all makeup thoroughly using a gentle makeup remover or cleansing oil. I love using micellar water from Garnier, but there are so many options out there.
Double Cleansing - follow up with a double cleanse. First, use an oil-based cleanser to remove any remaining sunscreen and makeup. Then, use your regular cleanser to cleanse the skin thoroughly.
Toning - repeat the toning step from your morning routine to prep your skin for the next products.
Serum - if you have specific skin concerns like acne or hyperpigmentation, apply a targeted treatment product, such as benzoyl peroxide or retinol. Use these treatments as directed and be cautious not to overuse them. I love to use The Ordinary products, especially the retinol and niacinamide ones.
Eye Cream - apply your eye cream once again to provide extra moisture and nourishment to the delicate skin around the eyes.
Moisturizer - apply a slightly richer or more nourishing moisturizer in the evening to help your skin recover and replenish overnight.
Weekly Treatments
Exfoliation - exfoliate your skin using a mild exfoliant with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother complexion
Masking - use a face mask that addresses your skin's specific needs, such as hydrating, purifying, or calming masks.

no one asked but here's my skincare routine xx š (including pictures of all the products !)
i'm a teen with acne-prone slightly sensitive skin that gets oily by the end of the dayš§āāļø
(i'm 99% sure i'm allergic to salicylic acid bc it didn't help with my breakouts/caused them so i avoid it in my routineā)
as a makeup remover i use the elf holy hydration makeup melting balm šæ
& a makeup eraser cloth š§½
for stubborn waterproof eye makeup i use garnier skin active micellar cleaning water all-in-1 waterproof (aka the blue one) i have a huge bottle of it :)š§
(i want to start using reusable cotton rounds so pls lmk of any good brands !)
i just ran out but if i haven't worn makeup but my pores feel especially clogged i use the burt's bees oil cleanser š„„ (you do have to double cleanse with a water based cleanser afterwards !)
for a daily water-based facial cleanser i use two different ones
the cerave foaming facial cleanser š§¼ "oil control" on the bottle is no joke ! i don't get oily in the day anymore bc of the niacinamide in this :)
but it can be a little drying/strong so i mix it with the cetaphil gentle skin cleanser š
i use this really cheap & generic silicone face scrubber for my nostrils/chin/sideburn-hairline area š§½
once a week i use this scrub pixi peel and polish its a mask with physical and chemical exfoliants
it smells like lemon cucumber waterš„ and can also be used for body acne on the chest, back, & arms !!
once a week i use an AHA chemical exfoliant it's elf supertone toner š it has glycolic acid and is has a little bit of a lemony scent
what i use as a daily toner is thayer's rose-scented witch hazel spray š it calms down any redness i have instantly !
i used to use the cerave daily moisturizing lotion but it was a little oily and it was impossible to apply makeup on š§ so now i use it on my hands before doing my facial moisturizer
and for that i use a mix of elf holy hydration gel-yeah moisturizer and elf holy hydration face cream š¦ it's pretty self-explanatory but the former is a clear gel and the latter is a white cream, i adjust the proportions for my moisture needs :) ā²ļø
in the winter or if my face feels dry or in need of healing i use clinique moisture surge overnight face mask š¦Ŗ
"mask" is a little misleading as you just apply it with your moisturizer like any other lotion š§“ it's super hydrating, it's a little expensive but i got it as a gift and a little goes a long way ! :)
after a breakout has healed completely i use a little bio oil on top of my moisturizer to fade any dark spots/scars š
after i shower and exfoliate my lips i use this random lip mask from bath and body works that's watermelon scented š it's thick (a little goes a long way) and yummy
i also use smith's rosebud salve in this tin š¹ it's like a nice scented vaseline
i don't use it all the time bc it's expensive but i love the mario badescu caffeine eye creamšit's so good for my sunken dark circles ! but avoid getting it in your eye and keeping it in the bathroom bc it curdles if it gets too hot from shower steam
for active acne spots i use might patch pimple patches š©¹regular for whiteheads and micropoint ones for swollen spots under the skin
those are pretty expensive so for smaller spots i use mario badescu drying lotion overnight š«§
i'm pretty bad at remembering sunscreen in the morning but i just got the glow recipe dew balm with spf 45 and niacinamide šø i love the glow and the light fruity scent :)
i do want mention that my life-saver game-changer for stopping cystic acne (those painful lumps deep in the skin) and just acne in general has been hormonal birth control pills ! after i started BC for pcos/hormonal reason all of my breakouts decreased significantlyšŖ½
tysm for reading !! šļø xx
